the camper for a bit, looked at the parts, then came to the window and said, ‘Where’s the rest of it?’” Krieg left the parts with his father to tinker with and, by 1982, Frederick was finally driving around in his own custom 1925 Model T. “My daughter Chelsea loved that car,” said Krieg. “She loved that there were no doors and no seatbelts.” Tom’s father passed away in 2004, but his Model T is now on display at The Farmer’s Museum, part of “The Pickup Truck: America’s Driving Force,” which opened Saturday, May 25, and features American-made farm and delivery trucks from 1907 to 1977. Frederick’s Model T was returned to Krieg in 1987, and when he was no longer able to tinker around with cars, he returned to an early love of building model cars, several of which are also on display. “He made all the little furniture in the back of
this one,” said Krieg, pointing to a miniature moving truck made to represent the family moving business lost in The Depression. “The wheels actually turn; he made all of these out of brass and copper. He was very clever. He enjoyed working with his hands.” Another familiar truck is on display in the show; Sharon and Don Oberriter’s 1922 Model T. “Harlo Beals owned it before we did,” said Don. “He sold it to us when we owned the Cooperstown Bat Company – I think he wanted to keep it in the area.” The car is believed to have been a local ride throughout its history, most likely purchased in Richfield Springs, according to Don. The Oberriters not only kept the car local, they made sure it was seen often, riding in parades and throughout Hall of Fame weekend, including the 50th anniversary Hall of Fame Game in 1989.

Hungry” program, which encourages gardeners to plant an extra row of produce and donate the bounty to local food pantries. “Off season, I write gardening articles online,” said Winters. “Someone turned me onto the GWA and I learned about this amazing program.” Asbury Gardens will give out free seeds to people who agree to plant a row. “We’ve got beans, greens, peppers and peas,” she said. “Later in the season, we’ll be offering tomato plants to food bank clients to take home and grow themselves.” St. Mary’s Food Bank, the Lord’s Table and the Salvation Army will all benefit from the gardeners’ efforts. “We’re serving 60 or more people a night,” said Joyce Mason, Lord’s Table director/feeding ministries. “We’ve got 35 families using the food bank.” The Lord’s Table hosts a dinner five nights a week, and Mason anticipates the fresh produce will enliven salads and vegetable side dishes. “We’re happy with anything,” she said. “We can use corn, potatoes, peas, tomatoes – and if we have an overabundance, we’ll spread the wealth and
plant rows, and others have expressed interest in bringing in zucchini, tomatoes and squash that overwhelm many Upstate plots. “A lot of people are relieved they have a place to bring those baseball-bat sized zucchini.” One gardener, said Winters, plans to bring in all her extra mint, along with a recipe for a spring salad. The organizer also hopes to get locals, businesses and civic organizations involved. “But it doesn’t necessarily mean planting tomatoes in front of your store,” she said. Asbury Gardens set aside a plot of land exclusively for the harvest, where Winters will grow tomatoes, peppers, eggplant and, for snacks, popcorn. The garden will also be the site of free gardening workshops on Saturdays throughout the summer. “It brings the community together,” she said. “It’s a great way to meet other gardeners.” She hopes to inspire other communities to rally gardeners to fight hunger. “I’d be more than willing to help someone start PAR in their town,” she said. “Gardeners are a generous group.”

Legal notice NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING ON INCLUSION OF LAND INTO CERTIFIED AGRICULTURAL DISTRICTS NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that a public hearing has been scheduled by the Board of Representatives of Otsego County, State of New York, in the Representatives’ Chambers at the County Office Building in the Village of Cooperstown, New York, on Wednesday, June 5, 2013 at 9:55 a.m. for consideration of several requests to include 10 parcels of viable agricultural land into certified agricultural districts located within the County of Otsego and the recommendations of the Agricultural and Farmland Protection Board. These requests have been filed with the County legislature, pursuant to Section 303-b of the Agriculture and Markets Law.
Six landowners have requested that their agricultural land, located in the Towns of Richfield, Cherry Valley and Otego be included in certified agricultural districts within Otsego County. She and Walter were instrumental in founding the Pancake Tent at the Walton Fair, where Ruth made thousands of donuts. She also served on the resident council, and participated in many activities at Chestnut Park. She is survived by her daughters, Phyllis (Gerald) Butts, Davenport, and Carol (Jim) Barrett, Andes; stepdaughter, Mary (Robert) Riddell, Oneonta; stepdaughter-in-law, Arlene Odell, Oneonta. Affectionately called “Grammie O,” she had 16 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and 21 great-great-grandchildren; also many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by
her husband, Walter; a son, William Odell; stepson, Warren Odell; granddaughter, Marjorie Butts; siblings, Frank Bedford, Dorothy Ogborn and Theresa Shaw. The family will receive visitors from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 29 at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 30 at Treadwell UM Church, with the Rev. Bert More, officiating. Burial will follow in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Activities Department, Chestnut Park Nursing Home, 300 Chestnut St., Oneonta, or Treadwell UM Church. Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Helen Arlene Swift, 74; Nurse’s Aide Loved Listening to Elvis ONEONTA – Helen Arlene Swift, 74, a former nurse’s aide at Fox Hospital, passed away on Thursday, May 23, 2013, at Bassett in Cooperstown. She was born in Summit, the daughter of Leslie Swift and Bessie (Cain) Swift. Helen was a nurse’s aide at Fox Hospital and also worked in home health care as a private-duty aide in the Oneonta area for many years. Helen was a member of the Moose Lodge in Oneonta and she enjoyed listening to music, especially Elvis. She is survived by her
son, Edward Swift; her brothers, Harry (Rose) Swift and Gary (Sandy) Swift; brother-in-law, Bruce Norton; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her twin sisters, Frances Norton and Susie Oliver; her brothers, Leslie Swift, DeForest Swift; and brotherin-law, Dale Norton. A graveside service will be held at noon on Sunday, June 2, in the Hillington Cemetery in Morris with the Rev. Nancy Stanley officiating. American Brockway Academy of Optometry, New York State Optometric Association Inc., the Cherry Valley Emergency Squad, the NY State School Board of Education, Omega Epsilon Phi., Grand Lodge Free and Accepted Masons and American Legion Post 0579, Cooperstown. He also enjoyed playing the organ and sometimes substituted in the Presbyterian and United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Mohawk Organ Theatre, the American Theatre Organ Society (ATOS), and served as the organ player during noontime concerts. He enjoyed gardening and was an antique enthusiast. Survivors include his
wife of 24 years, Aida A Brockway, daughter Janet Brockway Fuhrman and her husband Craig, and grandchild Hannah E Fuhrman. He was predeceased by his daughter Kris Brockway and grandchild Robert James. Graveside funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 1 in the Cherry Valley Cemetery with Rev Ron Fralick officiating. Burial will follow. Ronald A. Messenger, 70; Played Banjo With Fly Creek Philharmonic COOPERSTOWN – Ronald A. Messenger, 70, a long-active member of the Fly Creek Philharmonic, died Sunday, May 19, 2013, at his home on Railroad Avenue. Born Sept. 11, 1942, in Woodhaven, Queens. Ron, the son of Albert and Ethel (Anderson) Messenger, spent his youth in Queens and on Long Island. He attended Kings College, where he met and married his sweetheart, Pauline “Polly” Lowe on Oct. 26, 1968. He taught science at the Flemington-Raritan school district in Flemington, N.J until 1997. In 2008, Ron and Polly moved to Cooperstown. He played banjo with
the Corner Band of the Fly Creek Philharmonic and guitar at the Community Bible Chapel in Toddsville Ron is survived by his wife, Polly; and his daughter, Tara L. Messenger, Brooklyn, his sister, Elaine Lull, Morris; and numerous nieces, grandnieces and grandnephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Kenneth Messenger in 1968. The funeral was held Friday, May 24 at the Community Bible Chapel with Pastor Jack Klosheim officiating. Burial was in the Hillington Cemetery in Morris.
