f the William Cooper story is of enduring interest, well, so is Shakespeare. “I consider it a tragedy – he was a tragic hero,” said Alan Taylor, who 20 years ago published “William Cooper’s Town: Power and Persuasion on the Frontier of the Early American Republic.” In 1996, it won him his first Pulitzer Prize. There are innumerable books about Cooperstown – from Christ Church rector Ralph Birdsall’s 1917 “The Story of Cooperstown” to Elaine Dorian’s 1962 novel “The Sex Cure.” But 427 deeply researched and tightly written pages, plus another 122 page of appendices, footnotes and index, was something else. It became an immediate standard, essential to anyone who pretended to speak about Cooperstown’s history. “William Cooper was a very ambitious man,” Taylor continued, sitting on the back deck of the Oneonta home of his friends Peter and Shelley Wallace, the Hartwick College historian and the retired archivist. He was back in Otsego

20 Years After Publication, Alan Taylor’s History Revered Here County to deliver a lecture on his latest Pultizer winner, “The Internal Enemy,” on Tuesday, May 5, in the college’s Shineman Chapel. “He had enormous energy. It went to his head. He overplayed his hand,” Taylor said. Not only was Cooper ruined, but “Jeffersonianism triumphed with enduring consequences.” In the end, Cooper’s children, thinking they were wealthy, discovered on their father’s death in 1809 that they were broke – “the whole thing came crashing down,” Taylor said – with unintended benefits for American Literature. Penury led James Fenimore Cooper to write the first American bestsellers, “The Spy” (1821), and “The Pioneers” (1823), where he introduced Natty Bumppo. Driver Abandons Milk Truck, But Later Turns Himself Into Authorities CHIEF/From B1 to halt it. “Both witnesses said the vehicle struck the officer without slackening its speed,” according to a contemporary newspaper report in The Otsego Farmer, sister publication of The Freeman’s Journal. “Hannahs’ badly broken body was found 100 feet from the scene of the impact, at Main and Center streets.” In a resolution passed by the Village Board the next day, Hannahs was praised for his “unfailing courtesy and tact … Whatever may have been his faults and foibles, so common to us all, he was ever a loyal citizen whose constant concern was the welfare of Richfield Springs. “He labored quietly and efficiently to this end and the people of this community should always bear this great service in mind.” Chief Hannahs, who had run for county sheriff
in 1935, was put to rest in Lakeview Cemetery on Federal Hill, with no memorial to bear witness to his sacrifice. That is, until 4 p.m. Friday, May 15 – National Peace Officers Memorial Day – when a marble marker bearing his image will be unveiled at the gravesite. Standing vigil will be state troopers, Otsego County Sheriff’s deputies, a representative of the Cooperstown Police Department, and other officers. The local veterans’ post will provide an honor guard. Neale’s brother, Robert Burditt of Richfield Springs; and sisters Dean Ann Koyanagi of Corning, Betty Shultz of Hartwick and Vivian Button of Elmira will be among the mourners. The ceremony will also commemorate the only other officer in the Richfield Springs Barracks killed in the line of duty: Trooper
Robert Semrov, who was shot six times on Jan. 27, 1973, after a routine traffic stop near Schuyler Lake. After Hannahs’ death, his daughter Ann Elizabeth married and had several children, including Sue Neale, who, on her mother’s knee and growing up, often heard stories about her grandfather and his untimely end. “For years and years I’ve been going to the cemetery and there’s never been anything there to acknowledge what happened to him,” Neale said. And that bothered her. Her late husband, Sgt. Thomas J. Neale, was a state trooper assigned to the Richfield Springs barracks. On a visit to a friend of her husband’s, Investigator Ron Westbrook, at the barracks, she related her grandfather’s story to the officers there. “And they’re all going – oh, my gosh!” she recalled.

They agreed that Chief Hannahs deserved a proper memorial, and Investigator Westbrook appeared before the Village Board in February 2014 to request support. The trustees allocated $400 toward a memorial, and Cherry Valley Memorials took on the commission. While the monument was completed in late May, Hannahs’ granddaughter felt
it should be dedicated on Police Officers Memorial Day, and so it shall be. The story didn’t end with Hannahs’ death. The truck, veering out of control, struck a telephone pole, then the driver accelerated westward. Connizzo and a William Connelly jumped into a pickup truck and gave chase, overtaking the truck in a mile and a half
and forcing it off the road. The driver got out of the cab, said he was unaware he had struck anything, and agreed to return to the village. But he never showed up. When a search party returned to the scene, “they found the truck ditched and the driver missing. Keys to the machine were found on the floor of the cab,” the newspaper reported. “An examination of the vehicle revealed bloodstains on the bumper, front license plate and spare tire beneath the tank. The left headlight was badly damaged.” A time sheet in the cab identified the driver as John Lee, 37, of Schenectady and Hudson. A search was quickly organized, but Lee turned himself in. His explanation: He had consumed “ten whiskies and two beers” after leaving Buskirk Truck Corp. in Rensselaer County at 6 p.m. the evening before.

Taylor’s ‘William Cooper’s Town’ Still Hailed 20 Years Later TAYLOR/From B1 and, attending Colby College in Waterville, was encouraged by his history professor, Henry Raymond, to pursue what became his career. “I loved to do the research and I would work hard at it,” Taylor explained. He earned a Ph.D. at Brandeis, and his thesis became his first book,
“Liberty Men and Great Proprietors: the Revolutionary Settlement on the Maine Frontier,” (1990), and went on to teach at Boston University, then the University of California at Davis. At one point, Taylor, in a course on historical fiction, read James Fenimore Cooper’s “The Pioneers,” based on Cooperstown’s early
days. But William Cooper’s papers were still closely held by the family, under the control of Paul Fenimore Cooper, Jr., known as Nicky, the founding father’s greatgreat-great-grandson. Nicky and his late father, an author, had each intended to write the definitive biography but, when the son drowned off the coast of Australia during a 1988 trip, the papers passed into Hartwick College’s archives, finally becoming publicly available. Taylor
remembers seeing the 15 boxes of William Cooper artifacts for the first time. “It was a great thrill,” he said. He found Cooper to be “a great compelling character,” someone with “not much education but a great drive to succeed.” And gregarious. “It was a lot of fun to flesh out his personality from reading those papers,” Taylor said. As in “Liberty Men” and in “The Internal Enemy: Slavery and War in Virginia,” published in 2014,

which won Taylor, now Thomas Jefferson Memorial Foundation professor of history at the University of Virginia, his second Pulitzer, “I’m always trying to connect the local to the much larger scale.” When “William Cooper’s Town” was published, and then won the Pulitzer and the Bancroft and Beveridge prizes, Taylor was hailed locally. He remembers speaking at a sizeable gathering in Cooper Park, organized by then-mayor Wendell Tripp, long-time editor of NYSHA’s New York History journal. He was awarded NYSHA’s top award, the Dixon Ryan Fox Prize. Taylor was successful in overturning what Tripp called local “myths.” For instance, it was believed here that Cooper died from injuries received in a fight in Albany; actually, he died at Otsego Hall, his
Cooperstown manor house, surrounded by his family, after a lingering illness. Where Birdsall’s history weighed Hoosic Falls’ and Cooperstown’s competing claims of being home to “the real” Natty Bumppo, Taylor convincingly showed David Shipman, whose cabin was at the end of Otsego Manor Road, as The Leatherstocking. (Bruce Shipman of Richfield Springs, patriarch of this generation, is seeking a historical marker for David Shipman’s gravesite near Toddsville.) Village Historian Hugh MacDougall said he had “no fixed image” of William Cooper before reading Taylor’s book. “And yet, I did not feel astounded by any means.” Taylor’s portrait was simply convincing. “It’s a marvelous book,” said MacDougall. “It deserved every prize it won.”

IN MEMORIAM Local Funeral Services of Maria Lesar, 95; Immigrated from Yugoslavia After WWII ONEONTA – Word has arrived that, Maria Lesar, 95, formerly of Otego, who immigrated from Yugoslavia, passed away on Nov. 24, 2014, at Abington Hospital in Abington, Pa. Maria was born Aug. 13, 1919, in Gottschee, Yugoslavia, to Josef and Johanna Weiss. She married the love of her life, Rudolf, in 1940, and had 58 happy years with him until his death in 1998. In 1950, she and her husband and two children immigrated to Queens. In 1974, she and Rudy relocated to Otego, where she pursued her love of gardening and daily walks. After her husband’s death, Maria moved to The Plains in Oneonta, where she made many new friends. She was
a warm, energetic and outgoing person who loved her family and many friends. She was also a Marie Lesar member of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Oneonta. She is survived by her son, Werner Lesar and his wife, Kathleen of La Mesa, Calid.; her daughter, Margarete Normann and her husband, Richard of Dresher, Pa.; her sister, Emma Mantel of Leduc, Alberta, Canada. “Oma” is also survived by her grandchildren, Mike, Pam, Jen, Kim and Mark; and nine great-grandchil-
Ina P. Utter, 87; Seamstress Also Helped Son On Farm ONEONTA – Ina P. Utter, 87, a seamstress for the Oneonta Dress Factory, passed away Monday, May 4, 2015, at the Fox Nursing Home. She was born Oct. 28, 1927 in Liberty, Ky., the daughter of the late Albert and Della (Holcomb) Pitman. Ina graduated from Marathon Central School, Class of 1946. Upon moving to the Otego area, Ina began working at the dress factory; it later became SANYO. Ina was always there helping her son on his farm. If something needed doing, she would see that it got done. She was always doing for others but in the back ground never in the limelight. She was a wonderful cook and baker and always looked forward to Sunday dinners with her family. She also enjoyed going on family vacations, and attending the Otsego County Fair, SANYO retirees’ luncheons and the Wells Bridge Senior Citizens monthly get-togethers. Ina was a member of the Otego Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and attended
the Otego United Methodist Church. Ina is survived by her children, Donna and Donald Haney of Otego, David and Kathy Utter of Morris and Patti and Ronald Miller of New Berlin; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Joyce Barrows and Ruth White, both of Marathon; two brothers, Ralph and Sally Pitman of Lapeer, and Lloyd and Bettyann Pitman of Preble; brother-in-law, Ernest Spencer of Marathon; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. She was predeceased by her son, Richard “Dickie” Utter and three sisters and three brothers. Funeral services were Thursday, May 7, at the Bookhout Funeral home with the Rev. Sylvia Barrett officiating. Burial will be in the Otego Evergreen Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care, Inc., 1 Birchwood Drive, Oneonta, New York 13820. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the Bookhout Funeral Home, Otego.

Special IRS Agent Brian J. McArdle, 54; Fought Long Battle With Cystic Fibrosis COOPERSTOWN – Brian “Brooksie” Joseph McArdle, 54, a Cooperstown native living in San Diego, Calif., died Thursday, April 23, 2015. Brian fought a battle with Cystic Fibrosis all of his life. His optimism, strength of character, patience and perseverance made him an inspiration to all he touched. Born June 26, 1960, and raised in Cooperstown, Brian was passionate about
baseball, the Orioles, and especially Brooks Robinson. He graduated from Hofstra University, which fueled passion for the Big Apple. Brian moved to San Diego for the sunshine and enjoyed a 24-year career as a special IRS agent. His family came first to him always. He was a dedicated loving father and husband and will be missed.
