They graduated in December. “In Stone� is available online, but they wanted to give the story a fuller treatment. As they got into pre-production, Doren got an e-mail from Henry Little, Dr. Little’s greatgreat-great-great grandson, who had happened upon the shorter version on the Internet. “It was an uncanny

coincidence,â€? said Doren. They flew him to the East Coast so they could interview him on film. Also featured is Susan MurrayMiller, the Cherry Valley town historian. They also raised $5,500 towards the production of 23-minute “Once in a Good Many‌â€? from an IndieGoGo crowd-funding campaign. “It’s cool to see people come together to back something you want to make,â€? the filmmaker said. Alternating between interviews and dramatic interpretation, the film tells of Dr. Little being summoned to the home of a Colonel Young, whose daughter, identified as Mary, is unwell. (Since the film was completed, Doren has discovered a discrepancy in her gravestone, and is uncertain about the identification.) After rebuffing the physician three times, Mary finally allows Dr. Little to examine her, and he tells the father his daughter is pregnant. But when Mary does not give birth, the colonel sets about to ruining Dr. Little’s reputation, driving him into poverty. Little was determined to solve the mystery of the case, and when Mary died of yellow fever in 1816, he

dug up her body and discovered a calcified fetus of the unborn baby. “Lithopedion� babies are a rare phenomenon; the film’s title is a quote about the rarity from one of Little’s letters. They occur when a fetus dies during pregnancy, but is too large to be reabsorbed by the body; it calcifies to shield the mother’s body from the dead tissue of the fetus and preventing infection. While rare, they happen even today: In 2013, for instance, ABC News carried a report from Colombia: An 82-year-old woman complained of stomach pains, and when she was examined a stone fetus from a failed pregnancy 40 years before
was discovered. Little’s case was the basis for the 1944 novel, “Canal Town,� by Samuel Hopkins Adams. The fetus itself still exists, part of the NYSHA collection. “It was given to us in 1951 from Albany Medical College,� said Christina Milliman, a NYSHA registrar. “The thought is that it was once on display in the doctor’s office in The Farmers’ Museum.� Now living in New York City, Doran hopes to submit the film to festivals and is using it to help get his production company, Empire Films, off the ground. “I can understand why no one brought this up,� he said. “But I wanted to tell this story.�

Eva Petronio, 93; Operated Sew & Save Fabrics Store ONEONTA – Eva Petronio, 93, who operated Sew & Save Fabrics locally with her husband, passed away on Monday, May 04, 2015, at Fox Nursing Home. She was born Dec. 24, 1921, in Manhattan, the daughter of Vincent and Josephine (Maietta) Marretti. She married Salvatore Petronio on June 24, 1948. He predeceased her on July 29, 1977. Growing up in Brooklyn, Eva graduated from high school in 1939. She then began working for American News Company in New York City as a payroll clerk. In early 1951, she and her husband moved to Oneonta and opened the fabric store. For almost 40 years, even after her husband’s passing, Eva operated Sew & Save until retiring in 1989. She was a member of St. Mary’s Church and the Italian American Club, and volunteered for over 20 years with Catskill Area Hospice. Eva is survived by her daughter, Grace P. Lucas of Albany; two grandchildren, Rachel Lucas (Corey
Toushin) of Henderson, Nev., and Mark Lucas (Joline) of Clifton Park; two greatgrandchildren, Preston Eva Noble Lucas Petronio & Eva Grace Lucas; and several nieces & nephews. She was also predeceased by a daughter, Josephine Petronio; a son Vincent Petronio; and all her siblings, Mary Paino (Peter), Ralph Marretti (Stella), Elia Marretti (Dora), Angela Petronio (Marco), Anthony Marretti (Jenny) and Louise Guarisco (Michael). MARYLAND – Terry L. Graves, 60, of Crumhorn Mountain, who retired from the D&H after 30 years, passed away while surrounded by his family on Tuesday, April 28, 2015, after a five-year battle with cancer. He was born on Aug. 14,
1954, in Oneonta, a son of Lawrence M. and Beverly J. (Wilson) Graves. On Aug. 5, 1989, Terry married Lori A. Isbell in West Oneonta. As a child, Terry’s family owned a camp on Crumhorn Mountain, and some of his fondest memories were of times spent there. The camp

Charles Weiss, 32; Nurse RICHFIELD SPRINGS – Charles (“Charlie,” “Chuck”) George Weiss, RN, 32, died suddenly on April 28, 2015. He was born on Dec. 26, 1982, the first son of George Wesley Weiss and the late Mary Louise Kohler Weiss. Mary refused to have a “Christmas Baby” and waited until the next day to have him. He was instantly welcomed into this world by his doting big sister, Elyse, who proclaimed him “her baby!” and who never stopped looking out for him. Mary and George were then blessed with two more sons, Robert and Michael, who grew up the best of friends with their big brother. Charlie graduated from Richfield Springs Central School in 2000. After several years of experimenting with different college and career options, he found his calling as a registered nurse and graduated from Saint Elizabeth’s School of Nursing in 2010. He began his nursing career in the Emergency Room at Saint Elizabeth’s Hospital, and later as a traveling nurse at Oswego and SUNY Upstate Hos-
pitals. His most recent achievement was earning his bachelor’s in nursing from SUNY IT in Dec. 2014. Charles He leaves Weiss behind his father, George Weiss, of Richfield Springs; sister and brotherin-law, Elyse and Matthew Kane of Ilion; brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Andrea Weis, of Massachusetts; brother and sister-inlaw, Michael and Meaghan Weiss of Richfield Springs; three adoring nieces and one nephew, Katelyn and Abigail Kane, and Isabelle and Adam Weiss; his grandmother, Bernice Folts Weiss of Richfield Springs; along with Amanda and Lucas Tanoury, several aunts, uncles, cousins, and many dear friends. Rugged Hills Make Local Mountain Bikers Competitive BIKES/From B1 The team got started when Al Sosa, retired SUNY wrestling coach, started a college club and community rides, as well as maintaining the extensive trail system around Oneonta. “He’s the founding father of Oneonta mountain biking,” said Maben. “He wanted to see a high school team start, so I volunteered to be the first coach.” OHS senior Sam Baskin was among the first students to sign up three years ago, and has been #1 in the state since. “It’s all about lungs and legs and technical balance,” he said. “You have to have confidence enough to know that
if you go too slow, you’ll crash.” The team grew to seven riders, including two girls and four middle schoolers. And it’s not just Oneonta students – kids from Worcester, Laurens, Cooperstown and New Hartford come out to ride. “We don’t have formal practices,” said Maben. “The kids do their own rides, and then once a week, we do a group ride.” They also join Sosa’s weekly community ride, at 9 a.m. Sunday mornings. Ed Lorenz of Otsego Bicycles is the team’s sponsor, letting the kids come in and use his shop to fix their bikes.
“The way these guys ride, those bikes need constant repair,” he said. And sometimes, the riders get a little banged-up too. “We were filming and I went over a jump, and I thought I would do a trick where I took my hands off the handlebars,” said Noah. “I took them off, but I forgot to put them back on again!” He was wearing a helmet and gloves and he got some bumps and bruises, but he was soon back on his bike. “It helps these kids find their inner drive,” said Lorenz. “Everyone is there to have a good time.”
