Set back in the woods near that big house associated with the Butternut Barn gift shop was a state historical marker, rusty yellow lettering on faded blue: “Butternut Road. Indian Trail from Fort Plain to Unadilla, on Map by British officer, 1757, during French and Indian War.” “It took me quite a while,” she said the

Mackenzie, an Otsego County Historical Association director-at-large, has gone farther than anyone in figuring out the list of historical markers that appears on the State Museum website. “Many are not correct,” she said. “Many are not on the list.” The results of her research may be found on the just-published “Historical Markers of Otsego County and Their Locations,” available from any OCHA board member. fter he drills his last filling on Friday at the offices of Aaronson & Thompson on Chestnut Street, Dr. Mark Lavine, DDS, hangs up his white coat and puts on his headphones. He’s ready to rock. “I’ve always loved and collected music, and I’ve always wanted to do a radio show,”

he said. “I got this call from 91.3 FM in Roxbury, asking if I would host, so of course, I said yes.” In August, he started his show “Strange Brew,” every Friday night from 10 p.m. to midnight. “It’s an adult dose of rock and roll,” he said. “I want to play what people haven’t heard before.” But what sets his show aside from any other rock station is that he plays live concerts from classic rock stars – some Please See ROCKIN’, B3

Pomeroy Foundation Funding Sought For Additional Local Historical Markers MARKERS/From B1 heading out from her Hartwick home into the highways and byways of Otsego County. The earliest markers, she had discovered, were erected by the State of New York after 1923 in preparing for the 150th anniversary of the American Revolution. That effort petered out in the 1930s, although the state Education Department continued the effort. In more recent decades, the DAR took on the task. Local associations weighed in. The Pittsfield Historical Society erected two – the Gratz Tract and Hoboken, home of Borden’s largest condensery – in 2002. In 2005, the Goodyear Lake Association funded the Colliersville Dam marker. Some markers are independent of the state system: “Indian Grave” at

zie’s brother – had located 42. “I do believe I have them all,” she said. Another 10 that once existed are gone. There were five along the original Route 20 – the Cherry Valley Turnpike, which wended down into the village, then west past where CV-S Central School is today – but they were removed when the new highway was built, she said. Others – one identifying Monticello, that Town of Richfield hamlet, and another in front of the Schuyler Lake’s Old Stone Church – fell victim to snowplows, Mackenzie believes. And, looking at the list, there are gaps: “There’s nothing about the D&H.” In fact, there is no state Historical Marker in Greater Oneonta. And that leads to the next phase: The OCHA booklet isn’t the end, but a beginning.

501(c)3 organizations in the state. Last year, the Village of Gilbertsville’s marker was the first funded by the Pomeroy. The foundation insists on “primary research,” to avoid errors that have slipped into existing markers. For instance, Gilbertsville Historian Leigh Eckmair disputes the marker which says the Butternut Valley was named for “three butternut trees growing from one stump.” The phrase was appeared in a survey long after the name was in common use, Eckmair says. Leigh also questions the reference to a Massachusetts regiment being at Hyde Bay in 1799 on a marker at Route 20 and Continental Road. “That was during the

Revolution,” she said. The Pomeroy accepts grant applications in October, with awards to follow as soon as January. That has fueled a renewed interest in markers; the $3,000-4,000 price tag, Mackenzie said, was simply more than most societies could afford. In Schuyler Lake, for instance, Bruce Andrews, who is organizing this year’s 175th anniversary of the Old Stone Church, hopes to have that marker replaced. There is also interest in marking the Herkimer Cemetery, which bears the remains of Gen. Nicholas Herkimer’s brother’s family. In Hartwick, Caryn Kelsey and Gloria Waro have been documenting the Robinson Cemetery, the town’s oldest, and plan to seek a Pomeroy marker. Another prospect is David “Natty Bumppo” Shipman’s grave near Toddsville, which ancestor Bruce Shipman of Richfield Springs and Fly Creek Historical Society president Sherilee Rathbone are pursuing. Sandy Bollinger is leading a historic survey in Laurens, and Mackenzie said she may have some applications as well. For her part, Mackenzie is interested in commemorating Cato Freedom, a former slave who earned his freedom by fighting in the American Revolution and bought a tract in the Town of Burlington.

In Off Hours, Dentist Shares Love Of Rock, Roll Via Radio Show ROCKIN’/From B1 modern, such as Phil Lesh & Friends at the Capitol Theater in Port Chester last April, and some nearly lost classics. “I have The Who playing ‘Tommy’ in full at Tanglewood in July 1970,” he said. “It’s so perfectly re-mastered, it sounds like it was recorded yesterday.” Lavine, a Syracuse native and a graduate of the Columbia Dental School, moved to Cooperstown from New York City in 2003 to practice with Dr. Gerald Bers. “I needed a change of scenery,” he said. “I came up here, learned to play golf, learned to play soccer. I don’t like to be bored.” And when he first arrived, he found himself on the road to Yoko Ono’s farm in Franklin, where a friend was playing at a party for the house’s caretakers. “They would give out directions and the thought was that if you could find it, you were meant to be there,” he said. “She and Sean Lennon weren’t there, but it was still a fun party.” But after Bers death in 2004, he began working at Aaronson & Thompson at 53 Chestnut Street in Oneonta, where he still practices. In 2005, he DJ’d for the Relay For Life after much of the other entertainment backed out because of cold, rainy temperatures. “I was there from 6 at night until 10 in the morning,” he said. “But what really surprised me was that a bunch of high school kids came up and asked if I had any Beatles songs – of course, I did, so I played them. I also had my daughter Jennifer’s Will Smith CD with me, so when someone asked if I could play ‘Miami,’ I could play that song.” It showed him that, despite modern acts like One Direction and Katy Perry, kids today still revere the classics. “It doesn’t matter if it’s old or new, only if it sounds good,” he said. “No one says Cole Porter or Mozart are old. Young people today are very openminded.” Many of the concerts Lavine attends sell a recording of the show on bands’ websites afterwards, and he always picks it up. “I got a copy of Furthur’s show when they came to Cooperstown,” he said. “That was a really great show, and the second set was even better than the first.” Currently, the show can only be picked up on the radio in Roxbury or streaming online at www.wioxradio. org, but he archives all of his shows in a passwordprotected digital dropbox and keeps a mailing list for people who want to hear it, but aren’t the nightfly he is. “I got an email request for the dropbox password from someone in Ohio!” he said. “I joked with him that I wasn’t going to send it, because I lived in Ohio for a time and didn’t like it - but

I also saw Bob Marley play there once, so I told him that was enough to make me send the password to him.” This week, he’ll play Neil Young’s version of “Like an Inca” of 1982’s “Trans,” followed by Gov’t Mule’s cover of Young’s “Cortez the Killer.” “It’s 21 minutes long,” he said. “They explore every nook and cranny of that song!” And at midnight, he switches the station over to NPR and turns out the lights. “I don’t know if OTSEGO.seniority anyone is listening,” he said. IN MEMORIAM Jim Baldo, 67; Saw Opportunities In Radio, Real Estate, Restaurants ONEONTA – Jim Baldo, 67, well known in Oneonta for his business ventures in radio, real estate and restaurants, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 24, 2015 at home, surrounded by his family. James A. Baldo was born on Nov. 16, 1947, in Oneonta, the son of “Pat” Pasquo and Ida (DaDario) Baldo. A graduate of Oneonta High School, Jim received his bachelor’s in political science from SUNY Oneonta in 1971. He moved to Boston as a sales associate for Raleigh Bicycle, beginning a 25-year corporate career in sales and marketing that took him around the world. Jim returned to Oneonta in 1998 where his business interests included Banjo Radio Group, The Clinton Plaza and various restaurants, including Fiesta and the Italian Kitchen. He was a believer in Oneonta and its economic base and worked tirelessly

to promote his businesses and the people they served. Jim is survived by his wife Jacki Hunt of James Oneonta; his Baldo four children, Jessica Baldo Riggio of Miami and her husband Rocco, and their sons Rocco Jr. and Massimo; Joshua Baldo of Oneonta and his son Jonah; Steva Jeremias of Boston, and Jordan Jeremias of Oneonta; and Therese Heckman, mother of Jessica and Joshua. Jim is also survived by his sister Marguerite Baldo Johnson of Oneonta, nephew James Johnson of Cooperstown and his wife Amy, and niece Rebecca Johnson Carrington and husband Wayne of Oneonta; and their families. A funeral mass was planned at 10:15 a.m.

Carolyn P. Battista, 70; Worked 39 Years At Mental Health Clinic

ONEONTA – Carolyn P. Battista (nee) Percuoco, 70, secretary/receptionist at the Otsego County Mental Health Clinic for nearly four decades, died Thursday April 23, 2015, at her home. She was born on Sept. 25, 1944, to the late Patrick and Alice Percuoco, and grew up in Troy, graduating from Troy High School in 1962. She graduated from SUNY Cobleskill, then worked as a teacher/counselor. She began a bachelor’s degree, met and married Angelo Battista in September 1972. He predeceased her. On April 3, 1972, she joined the county Mental Health Clinic in Oneonta, where she spent 39 years, retiring on April 30, 2011. She called her time there “inspiring, frustrating, enriching, discouraging, positive, heart breaking, uplifting, challenging, humbling, satisfying and extremely rewarding.” In 2012 Carolyn was diagnosed with breast cancer, un-

derwent chemotherapy and radiation and was declared in remission as of September 2014. Carolyn is survived by one brother, Ronald Percuoco of Burbank, Calif., an aunt and cousins. Carolyn leaves behind James Carolyn Ferenbach of Battista New Lisbon, her significant other of 24 years; and Emily Phillips-Knapp, her “sister from another mother” and a 38-year friend. She was active in St. Mary’s Bible study classes, worked at their food bank and assisted the Holy Sews. Calling hours will be 5-7 p.m. Friday, May 1, at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home. Items from Carolyn’s extensive collections will be available for visitors to take in her memory.

Donald W. Berne, 93; Served Under Patton During WWII RICHFIELD SPRINGS – Donald Wesley Berrie, 93, who fought in Gen. George Patton’s Third Army during World War II, passed away on Wednesday, April 22, 2015, at home. He was born on Aug. 31, 1921 in Gloversville, son of the late Alexander and Mabel Weaver Berrie. He was raised and educated in West Winfield, and was working in a leather tannery when he answered the call to join the Army. He served as a medium crew man with the 748th Rhino Tank Division under Patton. He fought in the Ardennes, Central Europe, Northern France, Belgium, Czechoslovakia, Luxemburg, Austria and the Rhineland. He received the EAME Service Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. Don’s proudest possession from the war was the letter he received from General Patton himself, thanking him

and his fellow soldiers for their efforts, achievements and valor during the war. He was honorably discharged on Dec. 3, 1945, with the rank of T-5. On April 20, 1946, he was united in marriage to the former Ida Snyder in the Richfield Springs Presbyterian Church. They shared a loving and devoted union of 67 years until her passing on May 5, 2013. For 21 years, he was as a color chemist for Duofold in Mohawk, retiring in 1984. Donald was an active member of Richfield Springs American Legion Post # 616, and also a member of the Richfield Springs Veterans of Foreign Wars. Surviving him are one son, Michael Berrie and his wife Marge of Mohawk; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. At Mr. Berries’ request, funeral service and interment are private.
