15 years of selling drugs and bouncing between prison and rehab was celebrated at the Crossroads Inn, a sober-living community on Route 7 west of Oneonta. “I use those wasted years as my college,” Dylan said. “The stuff I learned there has helped me build a career doing good here.” It was part of his parole this past summer that he came up with the movement. “I was doing my community service at the Turning Point and we were talking about the show ‘Orange is the New Please See 2 YEARS, B3

But about 15-20 years ago, they started building nests up north, and now, we see some coming down from New England to hunt here.” January is an ideal time to scout, Mason says, because the leaves are off the trees and the eagles are actively hunting for food. He gave out radios to each car and instructed riders to call in if they spotted an eagle. And off they went. “There used to be a nest here,” said Mason via radio, about five miles outside of Delhi. “But it got too big, and the branches broke. They can get as big as 10 feet.” For the first hour, no one saw anything. Community Determined To Keep Dangers At Bay 2 YEARS/From B1 Black’,” he said. “And I just said, ‘Clean is The New Dirty!’ It stuck.” He had T-shirts printed for friends, and his therapist suggested he start a Facebook group; soon, it had over 500 members, many of them recovering addicts. “People will post that they want to go to a meeting, but they live outside of town, and almost immediately, other members will volunteer to give them rides. It’s very positive.” And sometimes, Dylan sees messages from members whose sobriety is in jeopardy. “I’ve seen posts where people are saying they want to use, that they’re having a rough time,” he said. “But below that, there’ll be 57 posts from other members with messages of support, help and inspiration, and they turned around, they didn’t use.” The movement quickly spread, and now, there are chapters as far away as Florida and Arizona. “It’s such a beautiful thing,” he said. “These are geographically based recovery groups, so people can coordinate rides and meet for coffee, do the things that make that actual difference in sobriety.” And membership isn’t
limited to those in recovery. “Anyone can be a member,” said Julie Dostal, executive director of LEAF. “I wear my Clean Is The New Dirty hoodie proudly. If you support healthy communities, you’re a member.” And now, Clark is taking the movement to the next level – helping addicts get off the streets and into recovery. “This community has a responsibility to provide medical help to addicts,” he said. “These are our children, our parents, our friends and our loved ones.” At the annual meeting of LEAF’s Opiate Task Force on Friday, Jan. 23, Dylan pitched a “Shot to Shot” program, to help users from their last dose of heroin onto a Suboxone-taper regimen, into detox and then to Vivitrol shots. It was an ambitious plan, and he’s refined it since. “We’re talking with some doctors who might get certified to do an ambulatory Suboxone treatment, and if we can get them up to the hospital in Walton, it can be one-stop shopping,” he said. “That’s very important for the addict. And LEAF has given him space to build the new website, which will feature an online store for Tshirts and information on how to be an activist in the community. “We see addiction everywhere,� he said. “Ambulances, needles in the parking lots, but we don’t see too much recovery or awareness. We want to hit the streets like a storm!� And he’s trying to rally a group together to attend Advocacy Days in Albany on Tuesday, Feb. 10, and speak with legislators in hopes of getting the word out about the movement. “I think it might be just what we need to get the shot-to-shot program started,� he said. But most important to him is making recovery, prevention and sobriety attractive to kids. “They shouldn’t feel ashamed for saying no,� he said. “With this movement, with this shirt, we provide them with a tool that makes hem feel good about sobriety.� He’s working on getting the shirts into schools, and already, he’s making a fashion statement. “One woman I know, her son wears his to class,� he said. “Pretty soon, his friends wanted ones, then the kids on the basketball team wanted them. If kids can see, ‘wow, this star athlete promotes this lifestyle,’ they’ll want to do it too.� “Sobriety is in,� he said. “Drug abuse is out.�

IN MEMORIAM Paul D. Marino, 93, World War II Veteran Also Lost A Brother, Ralph, In That War ONEONTA – Paul D. Marino, 93, a World War II veteran who also lost a brother in that war, passed away Thursday, Jan. 29, 2015 at Focus Rehabilitation & Nursing Center, the former Otsego Manor. He was born Feb. 17, 1921, in Oneonta, the son of Frank and Jennie (Rosetta) Marino. He married Alice Caulkins on Feb. 29, 1948. She predeceased him on Dec. 8, 2006. He served in the Army during World War. In 1981, he retired from the D&H Railroad after 40 years of service. He was a member of St. Mary’s Church, the Oneonta American Legion Post #259, the Oneonta VFW Post #1206, the Oneonta Moose Lodge #465, the Oneonta Elks BPOE #1312, and the Sixth Ward Athletic Club. In his younger years, he played softball and participated in other sports, including bowling, where he bowled on a team with his four brothers, which was called the Marino Five. In his later years, he loved playing cards at the
Sixth Ward. During his last year, he enjoyed playing Solitaire as well as watching “The Price is Right” and Paul D. his Al Jolson Marino movies. He is survived by three children in Oneonta, Paula Marino and her fiancé, Darryl Zdenek, Denise Marino, and Robert Marino and his wife, Lisa; three grandchildren, Meaghan Marino of North Miami, Fla., and in Oneonta, Daniel Marino (Krissy Wells), and Bella Sophia Marino; a brother and two sisters, Albert (Peggy) Marino of Oneonta, and, in Cooperstown, Dolores (Enio) Colone and Veronica Marino; an aunt, Marge Matthews of Oneonta; three sisters-in-law, Janice Marino, Loretta Hitchcock, and Esther Caulkins; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers and sisters, Ralph (killed in World War II), Anne, Karl, and Frank Marino, Rosalie (Dolly)
Roger J. White, 64, Pastor In WNY ONEONTA – The Rev. Roger James White, 64, of Machias, in western New York, died Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2015, in West Pennsylvania Hospital, Pittsburgh, Pa. He was born on June 27, 1950, in Oneonta, a son of the late Floyd and Nina Spafard White. On July 17, 1971, in Dennison Corners, he married Mary Ann McCoy, who survives. Roger pastored in several churches, beginning with two in Maine with the American Mission for Opening Closed Churches. In 1983, he moved to Rushford, also in western New York, and pastored at the Rushford Baptist Church until 1993, when he became director of the Odosagih Bible Conference in Machias. Roger’s first love was Jesus, to whom he was a lifelong witness, his wife,
his girls, sons-in-law and his grandchildren. In addition to his wife, survivors include their daughters, Esther (Michael) Clark of Houghton, Rachael (Dale) Sampson of Elizabethtown, Pa., and Sarah Herr of Marcellus; a son-in-law, Raymond Herr of Washington, D.C.; 11 grandchildren; a brother, Joseph (Betty) White of Ontario; three sisters, Sherryl (Steve) Banias of Otego, Nancy White of Oneonta and Esther Worden of West Oneonta; several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Paul White. The funeral was Saturday, Jan. 29, at the Central Baptist Church, Yorkshire, where Pastors Mark Chamberlain and Ben Phillips co-officiated.

Patricia B. Dornburgh, 82; Native Daughter
COOPERSTOWN – Patricia Butler Dornburgh, a Native Daughter of Cooperstown, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2015, at Home & Hospice Care of Rhode Island’s Philip Hulitar Inpatient Center in Providence. Born on Aug. 21, 1932, she was the daughter of Harold and Patricia (Bracelyn) Butler. A 1949 summa cum laude graduate of Cooperstown Central School, she earned a B.A. in French in 1953 from Albany State College (now University at Albany), where she was president of Beta Zeta sorority, and a master’s in library science from Caldwell College in New Jersey. After college, she taught English and social studies in Carmel for one year. In June 1954, she married William Dornburgh at St. Mary’s “Our Lady of the Lake” Roman Catholic Church. They raised their five children in Glen Ridge, N.J., where she was a high school librarian for 19 years, combining her love of students and of books.
In 1973, Patricia and Bill bought property in Middlefield and built a vacation retreat, which they expanded to their retirement home in 1995. They moved into Cooperstown 10 years later. Patricia volunteered at the Cooperstown Food Bank and was a eucharistic minister at Bassett Hospital, as well as a volunteer. For 12 years, Patricia and Bill spent their winters in Pinehurst, N.C. In 2014, they moved to Greenville, R.I., to be closer to their children. In addition to her husband, Patricia is survived by five children, daughter Kathleen Stuart and her husband, Tom, son Leigh and his wife, Paula, daughter Ann Davis and her husband, Kevin, daughter Barbara Santurri and her husband, John, and son Edmund and his wife, Elizabeth. Also eight grandchildren and one great-grandson. Calling hours are 2-5 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 7, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home. A Vigil Remembrance will be offered by Father John P. Rosson, her parish priest, at 3 p.m. at
Henry Walker, 87; GE Engineer, Colonel FLY CREEK – Henry Edward Walker, a retired General Electric engineer and Army Reserve colonel, died peacefully Sunday evening, Feb. 1, 2015, surrounded by family at the Fly Creek home of his daughter and son-in-law, Jacqueline and Jim Brophy. He was 87. Born Jan. 13, 1928, in Astoria, Queens, Hank was the son of Peter and Veronica (Bugajska) Walkiewicz. Graduating from high school, he attended Clarkson University earned a bachelor’s in electrical engineering. He then joined G.E. as a test engineer. On Nov. 16, 1948, he entered the Army. He continued with electrical engineering in the service, and was honorably discharged on Aug. 31, 1953, with rank of first lieutenant. He continued in the Army Reserves until 1981, participating in the Army War College at the Pentagon and attaining the rank of colonel.
While in the Reserves, Hank enjoyed a long career with G.E., eventually retiring from Square D (now Schneider Electric) in Secaucus, N.J., as an electrical engineer. In retirement, he became a licensed casino games dealer and worked for casinos in Atlantic City until age 75. Hank is survived by his wife, Dorothy M. Walker, of River Edge, N.J.; three daughters and sons-in-law, the Brophys in Fly Creek (where Hank lived since January 2013), Catherine and Vincent Bruno of Effort, Pa., and Denise and David Prahl of Edgewater, Fl.; one granddaughter, Alexandra Pugliese and her husband, Michael; and one great granddaughter, Briella Mary Pugliese.
