ew year, new robots, new challenge. Ten new members and 10 Otsego County 4-H FIRST Robotics Team veterans gathered at the Masonic Temple Saturday, Jan. 5, and – via simulcast – joined teams
from around the world for the unveiling of this year’s challenge. In April 2012, the local team competed at the FIRST National Robotics Competition in St. Louis, Mo., with its basket-shooting robot, Robokronos. This year’s challenge, Ultimate Ascent, challenges teams to build a Frisbee-throwing, pyramid-climbing robot. “The Frisbees are either red, white or blue,” said team founder Paul Agogolia. “The red or blue
is based on your alliance – two alliances, three teams each – but any team can go for the white Frisbees.” The red or blue Frisbees must be thrown at targets of various point values on top of the pyramid, while the white discs have to be thrown to a goal at the end of the playing field. Three of the students and two mentors took part in a larger kickoff event at RPI, where they got a chance to view a mocked-up playing field and bring home their official kit, containing motors, batteries, a control system, a PC and components – but no instructions. The team has six weeks to design a robot to meet the tasks before the regional event Thursday-Saturday, Feb. 28-March 2, at the RIT Field House. The team met twice over the weekend to begin brain-
storming. “What they’re trying to do is come up with two or three ways to do all three tasks,” Agoglia said. “They’ll build a prototype to prove that it will do what they want it to do, and then “bench test” each part to see if it works.” If the prototype can accomplish the task at hand, they’ll figure out a way to fit it into the robot and work with the other parts present. One of the biggest challenges, Agoglia said, was figuring out the drive system. “We need to figure out if we’re going to use four wheels or six,” he said.

Otsego Land Trust Protected 1,950 Acres In 2012 COOPERSTOWN

or the Otsego Land Trust, 2012 was its most productive year to date: It brought a record 1,950 acres under conservation easements, bringing the total protect to nearly 9,000 acres. The easements, closed in the last three business days of the year, were from: • Barbara McEwan Pope, Town of
Otsego, for “Round Top,” which offers views of rolling hills and forests down to Oaks Creek Valley and Fly Creek Valley. • Lewis Hall, for Morris Manor, near Gilbertsville, owned for over 200 years by the Hall family, heirs to Jacob Morris. It includes 4,500 feet of frontage along Butternut Creek and a habitat for freshwater clams. • David and Millie McCoy, for McCoy Farm, Summit, Schoharie
County. Of the 434 acres, 300 acres are managed forest and several acres of ecologically diverse wetlands. “We are grateful to them for their gifts to the entire community,” noted Harry Levine, Springfield Center, who chairs the Land Trust board. The program is also underway in ONC BOCES’ center in Grand Gorge, instructed by Paige Harris, Oneonta, (who in her other life is TV spokesman for Empire Toyota.) BOCES has been in transition, trying to position itself for the future. This has led to the dropping of some programs – dairy management, for instance, a controversial step – and the development of news ones. The catchword – or catch-acronym – has been STEM, for science, technology, engineering and math, considered the entry point to the jobs of the future. This curriculum had been two years in the development. “We want our students to have the same opportunities as everyone else,” said Booan. But this pre-engineering class is more than that: “It’s brand new. It’s never been done in our experience,” he said. In a standard high school, it’s unlikely the 10 pre-engineering students would have been exposed to what engineering is. Certainly, they wouldn’t have designed real-life stuff, then seen them become reality. One of the students in the class that day, Ethan Drugatz of Cherry ValleySpringfield, showed off a pair of glass-less sunglasses, which protect the eyes with a fine plastic mesh. 3D prototyping allows him to adjust the stems so the glasses would fit comfortably on a human head, and to refine the mesh to the optimum. The students learn how practical engineering can be. When the classroom vacuum cleaner failed to get into the required nooks and crannies, student Ben Gebl, also of CV-S, prototyped an attachment that, affixed to the hose, does the job.

Ethan’s also been tinkering around with a Klein bottle, a Möbius-striplike flash. This hands-on creativity “has given me more of an idea of what I’m interested in,” he said. There’s a technical end to the training, but also a “soft skills” component, said Booan – problem solving, working as a team. Morell has also led his class on field trips, to Chobani, GE/Unison, which manufactures power-generation and control systems in Norwich, to Raymond Corp., which is applying robotics to making forklifts and the like in Greene. There’s also an academic benefit, with the pre-engineering students gaining significant college credits through Syracuse University and SUNY Oneonta. And students are looking to RPI, Union, SUNY Delhi, Hudson Valley Community College and other options post-graduation. In addition to CV-S, the Occupational Center here serves Cooperstown, Edmeston, Laurens, Milford, Morris, Schenevus and Worcester central schools, and Oneonta City Schools.

David W. ‘Fatboy’ Wright, 41; Portlandville Friends Praise Him PORTLANDVILLE – David M. Wright, 41, known as “Fatboy” to his friends, died unexpectedly Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012. He was born Feb. 7, 1971, the son of Mae Edwards (Marshall). Most of his career he was a self-employed carpenter, but never turned down a profitable venture. He never turned down a friend, either. His life was spent carefree and surrounded by friends. He finally settled in Portlandville, where he opened his home to all. Friends referred to his house as the “half-way house.” His door was always open. You knew long before actually seeing him that he
was present. He is survived by his mother, Mae Edwards, son Michael (Slim) Wright, sister Karen Schaffer (Wright), brother Donald Wright, sister Kelly Tolley (Wright), many nieces and nephews, canine companions Shadow and Mollie, step-siblings, and many, many friends. A memorial service will be held from 5 - 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12 at the Moose Lodge in Oneonta. In lieu of flowers, a motorcycle run is being planned in his honor, with the charity to be determined. Gerard, 80, a Broadway musician who repaired instruments in his retirement, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013, at Otsego Manor. John, called Jack by friends and family, was born in New Rochelle to James C. and Anna C. (Magrino) Gerard, on Sept. 20, 1933, the youngest of eight children. Jack graduated from Archbishop Stepinac High School in White Plains before enlisting in the Navy during the Korean War. After his military duty, he

He taught instrumental music at several schools throughout Westchester County, and served as acting music chairman, a teacher trainer, dean of boys and assistant principal at several public schools in New York City. He was also the assistant conductor of the All-Boro Band in The Bronx and a music education instructor at Manhattanville College. He performed professionally as well, performing
PORTLANDVILLE – David M. Wright, 41, known as “Fatboy” to his friends, died unexpectedly Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012. He was born Feb. 7, 1971, the son of Mae Edwards (Marshall). Most of his career he was a self-employed carpenter, but never turned down a profitable venture. He never turned down a friend, either. His life was spent carefree and surrounded by friends. He finally settled in Portlandville, where he opened his home to all. Friends referred to his house as the “half-way house.” His door was always open. You knew long before actually seeing him that he was present. If you didn’t have to yell, the music wasn’t loud enough. He had a way of brightening your day with his hug or handshake. He was the life of the
party, to say the least, and he was proud of that. He was passionate about his family, as well. His mother was the most important woman in the world to him; she always won first place. He is survived by his mother, Mae Edwards, son Michael (Slim) Wright, sister Karen Schaffer (Wright), brother Donald Wright, sister Kelly Tolley (Wright), many nieces and nephews, canine companions Shadow and Mollie, step-siblings, and many, many friends. A memorial service will be held from 5-8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12 at the Moose Lodge in Oneonta. In lieu of flowers, a motorcycle run is being planned in his honor, with the charity to be determined. Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Donna (Swartz) Gerard and their daughter Holly Gerard, both of Cooperstown, along with three sons and their families: Gregory and wife Amy Gerard of Rifton; Jeffrey and wife Cris Gerard of New Paltz, and David and wife Maria Gerard of Durham, N.H. Also, two grandchildren and many nephews, nieces, and sistersand brothers-in-law. He was predeceased by two brothers and three sisters. A memorial mass will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan.
19, at St. Mary’s co-officiated by Father John P. Rosson, pastor, and Father Andrew Cryansm. There will be no calling hours. Interment at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Index, will be at a later date. Donations may be made to the Susquehanna SPCA, 4841 State Highway 28, Cooperstown, NY, 13326. The family also requests that friends plant a tree or flower their yard in his memory. Arrangements are entrusted to Tillapaugh Funeral Service.
Colin C. Heckman, 17; RSCS Student-Athlete RICHFIELD SPRINGS – Colin C. Heckman, 17, a Richfield Springs Central School junior, died unexpectedly on Monday, Dec. 31, 2012. Born July 20, 1995, in Cooperstown, Colin was the son of Dirk and Lisa (Young) Heckmann, Town of Exeter. In addition to being a good student at RSCS, Colin was a member of the varsity track and soccer teams. He enjoyed all types of music, shopping at the malls, current fashions, and took pride in his collection of hats and jewelry. Colin worked a number of summer jobs, most recently at the Cooperstown Country Club. In addition to his parents, survivors include his brother Derek and sister Monique; grandmothers Margit Wagner of Germany and Dee Young of Lapeer, Mich.;
uncles Casten Zemlak of Germany, and Tony and Nick Young of Belgrade, Mont.; aunts Andrea Young of Heckman Lapeer, Mich. and Danni Hylton of Germany; many cousins, and by his two best friends, Jerald Gardner and Joe Barra. His grandfathers predeceased him. A celebration of Colin’s life was Sunday, Jan. 6, in the RSCS gym. A reception followed in the cafeteria. Theresa Vertucci Oakes, 82; Organized ‘Christmas in the Park’ RICHFIELD SPRINGS – Theresa Vertucci Oakes, 82, who owned and operated Theresa’s Beauty Shop here for 50 years, passed away Friday, Dec. 28, 2012, at her home. She was born on May 5, 1930, in Richfield Springs, daughter of the late Antonio C. and Elizabeth A. Famulare Vertucci. A lifelong Richfield Springs resident, she graduated from Richfield Springs High School and the Utica School of Beauty, where she became a licensed
beautician. On July 1, 2000, she married Clifford Smith Oakes in Saint Joseph The Worker Church, where she remained a parishioner. She was often soloist for Sunday Masses and funerals, and a member of the church’s Rosary Society. She was a member of TOPS and the Wednesday Morning Bird Club, and took courses in flower arranging. She served on the Board of Elections. She was responsible for organizing the annual
“Christmas in the Park.” She organized the Red Hat “Lady Bugs” chapter of Richfield Springs and was Queen of the group. In addition to her husband, survivors include two brothers and their wives, Frederick and Joy Vertucci of Richfield Springs, James and Barbara Vertucci of Stoneridge, nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by two brothers, Joseph and Anthony Vertucci; six sisters, Mary Brown, Elizabeth Lyon, Grace Avery, Rose
Edick, Anna Edick and Margaret Lasher. Calling hours will be 5-8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 11, in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home. A funeral Mass will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, at St. Joseph, with the Rev. Matthew Wetsel, pastor, officiating. Memorial donations may be made to Catskill Area Hospice or Saint Joseph.
