C'è gente e gente
L'anno scorso ci ha lasciati il nostro amato direttore, Franco. Di tanto in tanto me ne ricordo, eppure mi sembra ancora che da un momento all'altro mi arrivi una mail con un bel cazziatone per non aver fatto questo o quell'altro... magari una mail a cui non non avevo dato seguito oppure un articolo mai scritto che gli avevo promesso. Già... promesse. Quelle che poco prima della sua dipartita alcuni di noi gli fecero. Gli promettemmo che avremmo fatto di tutto per continuare l'opera che a lui stava più a cuore e di assicurare che le persone a cui lui voleva bene avessero un minimo di dignità. Franco diceva di non aver mai avuto fortuna con alcuni di cui pensava di potersi fidare. Prima o poi gli avrebbero mancato di rispetto. Ecco probabilmente il motivo per cui vivesse una vita solitaria. Noi, ovviamente, finora crediamo di non avergli mancato di rispetto. Anzi, il suo sogno di un bisettimanale che potesse competere come qualità e servizio sembra essere divenuto una realtà. I lettori crescono, le associazioni ci sono grati per il servizio che diamo e malgrado il nostro piccolo ci facciamo notare. Perfino chi per oltre un decennio ci ha ostacolato e disprezzato ora sembra aver compreso l'importanza di tenersi caro un mezzo d'informazione che riscuote un seguito non indifferente nella nostra comunità e nelle istituzioni, tanto italiane quanto quelle australiane. Ci sono poi altri a cui Franco teneva particolarmente e a cui ha voluto bene. Persone per le quali Franco si arrabbiava, si preoccupava, si esponeva. E forse proprio per questo oggi mi domando quanto di ciò che avevamo promesso a Franco stiamo davvero facendo. Perché le promesse, quando vengono fatte davanti a una persona che sta per andarsene, sembrano facili. Poi la vita riprende il suo corso e le priorità cambiano. Le persone cambiano. E, qualche volta, per taluni, cambiano anche le promesse che non si erano mai fatte veramente, ma solo per secondi fini. Chissà, magari un giorno arriverà davvero quella mail. Poche parole, una delle sue solite tirate d'orecchi e, alla fine, quel modo tutto suo di farci capire che aveva ragione. Spero soltanto che, quando arriverà, avremo qualcosa di cui rendergli conto senza dover abbassare gli occhi.

Precious works stolen in Messina
A major art theft has struck Messina’s Regional Museum during the night between August 15 and 16, as thieves stole four works attributed to Renaissance master Antonello da Messina. The break-in occurred during Ferragosto, when the city was focused on celebrations surrounding the traditional Vara procession, potentially helping the criminals avoid attention. Investigators described the operation as “surgical”, with the thieves reportedly bypassing the museum’s security and alarm systems. Efforts are underway to trace the missing masterpieces
NSW Premier Chris Minns, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and the Consul General of Italy in Sydney, Dr Gianluca Rubagotti, whose presence underlined the significance of Ferragosto to Sydney’s Italian-Australian community. A major feature of this year’s event was the collaboration between the festival organisers and Five Dock’s established Italian businesses. Rather than operating as a stand-alone street celebration, Ferragosto increasingly embraced the local Italian commercial precinct, bringing existing restaurants, retailers and businesses into the festival and adding a new dimension to the experience. At the western end of the festival, DJ Pasquale delivered a spectacular Italian electro set from beside the Milan Club merchandise stand. His infectious beats quickly turned the street into an impromptu dance floor, drawing crowds into a lively celebration that continued throughout the afternoon. At the opposite end, the main stage maintained the energy, while street performers and artists filled the laneways and spaces between the major attractions. The centrepiece was FerraVarietà, the festival’s main entertainment stage, featuring live music, cultural performances and variety acts, including several performers who travelled from interstate. Among them was Italian-Australian comedy legend James Liotta, who summed up his experience simply as “fun”. The Continues on page 7
