WELCOME

Goodbye 2025 and HELLO 2026!

What a year it was… Adelaide… Perth… Sydney... Melbourne.

I have absolutely loved hopping around the country and there is no plan to slow down this year either!

Connections with friends, peers and colleagues – old and new – some of these treasured moments are reflected on in this edition, fanning the fire of my why.

Thank you.

This community is special. It’s organic and genuine and oh so supportive!

This year the GALA is back and it just feels different… I am dedicated to ensuring this celebration is amazing and deserving, in every way, of you – the allied health community across the country.

Get onto your nominations, get reflecting and get involved.

Let’s look forward together,

YOU’RE CLOSER THAN YOU THINK

Nomination Tips for the 2026 Gala

Most people who deserve to be nominated do not think they are ready.

They assume their work is not big enough, polished enough, or different enough. Impact is downplayed, progress is overlooked, and meaningful outcomes are dismissed as simply doing the job.

From our perspective, those are often the nominations with the greatest substance.

A strong nomination does not begin with perfection. It begins with reflection. With pausing long enough to recognise what changed, who it helped, and why it mattered. A nomination is not about embellishing the work, but about giving it the space to be clearly seen.

Judges are not reading for polished language. They are reading to understand context, intent, and impact. They want to see what problem existed, what action was taken, and what changed as a result. When those elements are clear, the story carries its own weight.

Where nominations often fall short is in assuming shared understanding. What feels routine to you may be unfamiliar to someone reading it for the first time. Without detail, even strong outcomes can lose their meaning. Evidence provides depth and helps us see the full picture.

Preparation makes a difference. Starting early creates space to gather evidence, revisit outcomes, and respond with clarity rather than urgency. The strongest nominations are honest, considered, and grounded in real practice. They do not try to impress. They simply show the work as it is.

WHAT STRENGTHENS A NOMINATION

After reviewing thousands of submissions, these qualities consistently stand out:

• Clear alignment with the selection criteria

• Specific examples that demonstrate impact

• Evidence that adds meaning rather than volume

• Clarity around individual or team contribution

• Insight into challenges, decisions, and learning

• A nomination that feels considered and reflective, not rushed

Many of the strongest nominations are written by peers or teams who have witnessed the impact firsthand. Others come from individuals who take the time to thoughtfully reflect on their own journey. All are equally valued.

If you have seen excellence in action, in yourself, in someone you work alongside, or within your team, we encourage you to put it forward. You are closer than you think.

YOUR 2026 GALA QUESTIONS ANSWERED

We’ve seen a lot of questions coming through, so here’s a quick, straight-up guide to what you can expect for the 2026 Allied Health Awards.

When do nominations close?

Nominations are now open and are expected to close in Q2 2026. We always recommend submitting early so you have time to reflect, gather evidence, and complete your application without rushing.

What categories are available?

There is a wide range of individual, team, and organisational categories for 2026, covering clinical excellence, leadership, innovation, community impact, and more.

Check the categories here

Each category runs based on entry volume. If a category does not receive enough nominations, it may be closed for the year. This helps ensure a fair and meaningful judging process across all awards.

Can I nominate myself?

Yes. Absolutely. Self-nominations are welcome and encouraged. Many of our strongest nominations come from people who take the time to thoughtfully reflect on their own work.

Can I nominate more than one person or category?

Yes. You can submit multiple nominations, including across different categories, as long as each submission meets the criteria.

What happens if I’m named a finalist?

Finalists receive national recognition, media exposure, and an invitation to celebrate at the Gala alongside peers from across Australia. It’s also an opportunity to connect with the wider allied health community and reflect on the impact of your work.

Where is the 2026 Gala being held?

The 2026 Allied Health Awards Gala will be held at Adelaide Oval. After taking a break last year, we’re returning in 2026 with renewed energy and plans for our biggest celebration yet.

What’s the dress code?

The Gala is a formal evening event. Guests are encouraged to dress in formal or black-tie attire that feels comfortable, confident, and celebratory.

When will tickets go on sale?

We’ll be releasing early bird tickets first for those who like to organise ahead and secure their spot early. General ticket sales will follow once early bird tickets are exhausted.

Can I attend with my team or organisation?

Yes. Team attendance is a big part of the 2026 Gala. Tables of 10 will be available for organisations and teams who want to attend together and celebrate collectively.

We’ll also be introducing new table experiences designed to make group attendance more engaging and memorable. More details to come.

What if I’m attending on my own?

Many attendees come solo and find the Gala to be welcoming and inclusive. Whether you attend alone or with colleagues, the night is designed to foster connection and celebration across the profession.

VOICES FROM ACROSS AUSTRALIA

Allied health is built on people. Their stories, their commitment, and the quiet impact they make every day in communities across the country.

Voices from Across Australia was created to capture those moments in between. The conversations. The shared experiences. The reminders that no matter where we practise or which discipline we come from, we are stronger when we come together.

In 2025, our Networking Series travelled across multiple states, bringing allied health professionals together in South Australia, Western Australia, New South Wales, and Victoria. In each city, we heard powerful reflections on connection, collaboration, and what it truly means to feel supported within the profession. This feature brings those voices together. Unfiltered, honest, and grounded in real experience.

As we continue this journey, we look ahead to resuming the Networking Series on February 13 in Brisbane, as we keep creating spaces where the allied health community can connect, share, and feel seen.

Because what we do has always been about more than awards or events. It is about connection, recognition, and celebrating the allied health community across Australia.

HOW CAN WE CONNECT WITH YOU?

hello@restorativereferrals.com.au

WAS THERE A CONVERSATION, CONNECTION, OR MOMENT DURING THE EVENT THAT REALLY STUCK WITH YOU? TELL US ABOUT IT.

As the saying goes, if you’re the smartest person in the room, you are in the wrong room. At the Perth networking event I was definitely in the right onelearning so much from brilliant OT’s, physiotherapists, EP’s and speechies. We spoke about ourselves, but as most allied health, mainly about how much we love our patients and their stories.

In between the tapas and the wine, I said to myself how special to be in a room full of helpers. Every single one. The world is hard right now. Look for the helpers.

WHAT IS ONE KEY INSIGHT, IDEA, OR TAKEAWAY YOU WALKED AWAY WITH AFTER ATTENDING THE NETWORKING SERIES?

Connecting with other allied health professionals with practices that are like Restorative with locations across Australia enabled creating a masterclass of a treating team for our patients.

IF YOU COULD DESCRIBE YOUR EXPERIENCE AT THE NETWORKING SERIES IN THREE WORDS, WHAT WOULD THEY BE AND WHY?

Gratitude, joy and pride – for the incredible multidisciplinary clinicians and how lucky their patients are to have them.

It was just great to be in a room of “my people”. The Allied Health Community is just one big family. Having been a guest on The Allied Health Podcast earlier in the year, it was great to meet Claire and Danielle in person.

As a specialist Allied Health Photographer, I am looking to build relationships and connections with potential Allied Health referral partners. It was a great way to get to know each other and learn how we can support each other’s businesses.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO JOIN THE AHA NETWORKING SERIES IN YOUR CITY, AND WHAT WERE YOU HOPING TO GAIN FROM IT?

Just meeting new people. For some people networking is not an easy thing. So it is making yourself a bit uncomfortable and getting out there and meeting new people.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO JOIN THE AHA NETWORKING SERIES IN YOUR CITY, AND WHAT WERE YOU HOPING TO GAIN FROM IT?

I saw a linkedin post about the event and thought ‘if I feel uncomfortable about attending’ (because of the fear of not knowing anyone), ‘that’s EXACTLY why I should attend!! Nothing exciting or new comes from remaining in your comfort zone. I was hoping to meet new people and hear from other health professionals about their journeys and experiences. WAS THERE A CONVERSATION, CONNECTION, OR MOMENT DURING THE EVENT THAT REALLY STUCK WITH YOU? TELL US ABOUT IT.

What stayed with me afterward the event was the way Sarena and Julie welcomed me to the event and ensured I was introduced to new faces. Everyone was very open to chatting and the conversations flowed easily.

HOW DID THE ATMOSPHERE OR ENERGY OF THE EVENT MAKE YOU FEEL AS AN ALLIED HEALTH PROFESSIONAL?

I loved the energy - Sarena has a positive and fun energy that is contagious. I really appreciated this and I could see that others who attended also did.

Yes for sure.

WHAT IS ONE KEY INSIGHT, IDEA, OR TAKEAWAY YOU WALKED AWAY WITH AFTER ATTENDING THE NETWORKING SERIES?

THE ROAD TO ADELAIDE

Why the 2026 Gala is unmissable

The Allied Health Awards paused in 2025 to create space for both. Space to listen, reflect, and rethink what the Gala should feel like for a profession that has grown in confidence, capability, and national presence.

What returns in 2026 is not a restart. It is a statement.

On 10 October 2026, the Allied Health Awards take over Adelaide Oval for a night designed to feel intentional from the moment you arrive. Bigger, yes. But more importantly, deeper. More considered. More memorable.

Adelaide Oval was chosen because it carries weight. It is a venue reserved for moments that matter. Walking into it feels different. It signals that this is not just another awards night, but a milestone for a profession that deserves to be celebrated on a national stage.

The 2026 Gala will feel immersive rather than formal. Expect an atmosphere that draws you in, table experiences that bring teams together, and moments that feel shared rather than staged. This is a night built for conversation, connection, and collective pride.

And if you are wondering whether it is worth travelling for, the answer is simple.

This Gala is no longer about where you are based. It is about stepping out of the everyday and into a moment that brings the allied health community together in one place. A chance to celebrate work that often happens quietly, but has lasting impact.

After a year of reflection, the return feels deliberate. Energised. Ready.

The 2026 Allied Health Awards Gala is shaping up to be our biggest yet, not because of numbers alone, but because of what it represents. And yes, it is the kind of night that makes booking the flight feel like the obvious next step.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO JOIN THE AHA NETWORKING SERIES IN YOUR CITY, AND WHAT WERE YOU HOPING TO GAIN FROM IT?

I have been part of the Awards since Sarena first founded this inspiring program, and have supported this epic personal and professional journey. I prioritised attending three of the network’s events this year because they are a major source of referrals and professional connection for me. I was able to make each trip possible by combining them with other commitments or personal travel – attending the OTA Conference in Adelaide, taking a short break in Sydney with a quick visit to Tasmania on the way home, and presenting an in-person education session while I was in Melbourne.

WAS THERE A CONVERSATION, CONNECTION, OR MOMENT DURING THE EVENT THAT REALLY STUCK WITH YOU? TELL US ABOUT IT.

Adelaide was a blast – reconnecting with Chris Pearce (first met at the 2024 Gold Coast Gala) and celebrating the progress his team has made since our supervision and education work together. I also loved meeting the smart and savvy Lauren Hart, and diving into all things Schema Therapy with Dr Oz Yalcin, a personal highlight.

Sydney brought more great reconnections, including Paris Martin from Healthii People (after meeting at the 2023 Darwin Gala) and the fabulous Jordan Casey, where we explored recruitment and support needs across allied health. Chats with Aaron Ishac, then Justin Boulos uncovered shared passions in oysters, music and travel. Meeting Natalie Tanner-Black and then Chris Antaris in person was a treat — more conversations on supervision, recruitment and retention, followed by a blast on Rebel Radio! Warm hugs with Dave Jereb, a long-awaited reunion with Amy Vincent, a city tour from Laura Simmons, and meeting Raquel Baptista. Reconnecting and having time with Alyce Svenskher insights on supervision and mentoring OTs was such a welcome conversation and connection.

Melbourne wrapped up the series beautifully with an overdue in-person catch-up with Nathan Butler from AHC (another Darwin Gala connection). Working with him this year on OT service development and leadership training has been a privilege. I also loved meeting dedicated local OTs, and connecting with Fiona Sexton and Danielle Weedon.

And above all, my absolute favourite moments were those spent with Sarena – so proud of this incredible woman.

HOW DID THE ATMOSPHERE OR ENERGY OF THE EVENT MAKE YOU FEEL AS AN ALLIED HEALTH PROFESSIONAL?

Each event carried its own unique vibe, yet all shared a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Attendees were met with genuine, positive conversations and surrounded by inspiring individuals and teams. This sense of connection and encouragement was especially meaningful after an incredibly challenging year for the allied health community.

DID YOU MEET SOMEONE NEW WHO EXPANDED YOUR PERSPECTIVE OR OPENED UP AN OPPORTUNITY FOR YOU?

Yes, Alyce Svensk has been so generous in directing OTs ready for more in-depth supervision and leadership development, and both Healthii People and Rebel Recruitment offered workforce insights.

WHAT IS ONE KEY INSIGHT, IDEA, OR TAKEAWAY YOU WALKED AWAY WITH AFTER ATTENDING THE NETWORKING SERIES?

Meeting people in real life over drinks, food and a shared purpose is still essential, even with remote connection opportunities – nothing beats a chat, hug and genuine conversation in person.

HOW DOES COMING TOGETHER WITH OTHER ALLIED HEALTH PROFESSIONALS ACROSS AUSTRALIA IMPACT YOUR SENSE OF COMMUNITY OR PURPOSE?

The Awards and the Network Series constitute a pivotal suite of events that directly bolster the allied health workforce, enhance and maintain professional networks, and provide critical value – especially in periods of heightened stress or difficulty.

IF YOU COULD DESCRIBE YOUR EXPERIENCE AT THE NETWORKING SERIES IN THREE WORDS, WHAT WOULD THEY BE AND WHY?

Reinvigorating, genuine, positive.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO FOR THE 2026 ALLIED HEALTH AWARDS GALA IN ADELAIDE?

More of the above! Genuine conversations with like-minded individuals and teams, reconnecting with awesome humans doing great stuff in their area, and being open to new opportunities, but most of all, supporting the founder and my friend, Mrs Jones!

WHAT MESSAGE WOULD YOU LOVE TO SHARE WITH OTHER ALLIED HEALTH PROFESSIONALS WHO ARE CONSIDERING ATTENDING FUTURE AHA EVENTS?

Do it! Book the tickets, make it a holiday, try it out, be open to new ideas and connections.

Reinvigorating, genuine, positive.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO JOIN THE AHA NETWORKING SERIES IN YOUR CITY, AND WHAT WERE YOU HOPING TO GAIN FROM IT?

After attending the Allied Health Awards previously, I knew the calibre of people drawn to this space, values- driven, passionate, and all working toward better outcomes in care. With many colleagues based interstate, it was also a rare opportunity to reconnect in person, share ideas in a relaxed setting, and strengthen the kind of relationships that go beyond business cards. I came hoping to connect, and I left with new conversations already leading to referrals and collaborations.

WAS THERE A CONVERSATION, CONNECTION, OR MOMENT DURING THE EVENT THAT REALLY STUCK WITH YOU? TELL US ABOUT IT.

One highlight was sitting down with Julie Carlile, after so many online conversations, it was great to finally connect in person. Even more valuable was the group discussion that formed around us, diving into mental health, OT, and shared care experiences. That kind of natural, cross-disciplinary exchange is exactly what builds stronger outcomes for the people with invisible illnesses we support.

HOW DID THE ATMOSPHERE OR ENERGY OF THE EVENT MAKE YOU FEEL AS AN ALLIED HEALTH PROFESSIONAL?

It felt incredibly motivating. The room was full of people genuinely passionate about what they do, and more importantly, why they do it. There was a shared drive for personal and professional growth, not just to improve individual practice, but to lift the standard of care across the board. It reinforced the feeling that we’re part of a bigger collective movement.

DID YOU MEET SOMEONE NEW WHO EXPANDED YOUR PERSPECTIVE OR OPENED UP AN OPPORTUNITY FOR YOU?

Definitely. Conversations with osteopath Louise Bibby and psychologist Dr. Oz Yalcin stood out, both offered fresh insights into areas adjacent to my own, and challenged me to think more broadly about how we collaborate across disciplines. Those connections have already started shaping ideas and opportunities beyond the event.

WHAT IS ONE KEY INSIGHT, IDEA, OR TAKEAWAY YOU WALKED AWAY WITH AFTER ATTENDING THE NETWORKING SERIES?

That we’re not doing this alone. As business owners and clinicians, it’s easy to stay focused internally, constantly refining, improving. But this reminded me that others are doing the same, and we’re stronger when we share the journey. Collaboration isn’t just helpful, it’s essential. It’s how we speed up progress and drive meaningful change.

HOW DOES COMING TOGETHER WITH OTHER ALLIED HEALTH PROFESSIONALS ACROSS AUSTRALIA IMPACT YOUR SENSE OF COMMUNITY OR PURPOSE?

Especially working in invisible illness, where clients are often dismissed or misunderstood, this kind of community matters. Sharing stories and insights helps us collectively become more equipped to recognise, validate, and support those people who so often slip through the cracks. It’s about being seen, being heard, and helping others be seen too.

IF YOU COULD DESCRIBE YOUR EXPERIENCE AT THE NETWORKING SERIES IN THREE WORDS, WHAT WOULD THEY BE AND WHY?

Connected. Validated. Energised. Connected – to peers who genuinely care. Validated – that we’re on the right path. Energised – by the ideas and collaborations sparked.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO FOR THE 2026 ALLIED HEALTH AWARDS GALA IN ADELAIDE?

The celebration itself, reconnecting with peers, meeting new nominees, and hearing the stories behind the work. Having been a past winner, it’s powerful to be part of a room that recognises the real impact happening across the sector. It’s not just a night out, it’s a reflection of the incredible momentum in Allied Health right now.

WHAT MESSAGE WOULD YOU LOVE TO SHARE WITH OTHER ALLIED HEALTH PROFESSIONALS WHO ARE CONSIDERING ATTENDING FUTURE AHA EVENTS?

You’re not different and you’re not alone. There are others out there just like you, doing the work and looking for connection. These events aren’t just networking opportunities, they’re about aligning with something bigger. The more we show up and collaborate, the more influence and authority we have as a sector. We rise together.

HOW CAN WE CONNECT WITH YOU?

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO JOIN THE AHA NETWORKING SERIES IN YOUR CITY, AND WHAT WERE YOU HOPING TO GAIN FROM IT?

I was keen to connect with other allied health professionals in my city, especially as I didn’t have many opportunities to travel myself for work this year. I was hoping to meet new people from different disciplines to my own, and discuss potential opportunities for collaboration in the coming year.

WAS THERE A CONVERSATION, CONNECTION, OR MOMENT DURING THE EVENT THAT REALLY STUCK WITH YOU? TELL US ABOUT IT.

Yes! I met someone new who I had so much in common with both personally and professionally, and we are now making plans to work together on a project in the new year. So exciting!

HOW DID THE ATMOSPHERE OR ENERGY OF THE EVENT MAKE YOU FEEL AS AN ALLIED HEALTH PROFESSIONAL?

It made me feel like a valued health professionals after a difficult year, and helped me feel excited about my work again.

DID YOU MEET SOMEONE NEW WHO EXPANDED YOUR PERSPECTIVE OR OPENED UP AN OPPORTUNITY FOR YOU?

Yes! I met someone new who had a great idea about online marketing, and who is willing to support myself and others.

WHAT IS ONE KEY INSIGHT, IDEA, OR TAKEAWAY YOU WALKED AWAY WITH AFTER ATTENDING THE NETWORKING SERIES?

My takeaway is to not be afraid to talk to new people. Allied health professionals are such a supportive group who will help and support you if they just know your needs.

HOW DOES COMING TOGETHER WITH OTHER ALLIED HEALTH PROFESSIONALS ACROSS AUSTRALIA IMPACT YOUR SENSE OF COMMUNITY OR PURPOSE?

As someone who works alone as a sole trader, coming together in person as part of the Australian allied health community really creates a sense that I actually HAVE a community, and my work is valued. This leads to an improved sense of purpose and professional identity for me.

IF YOU COULD DESCRIBE YOUR EXPERIENCE AT THE NETWORKING SERIES IN THREE WORDS, WHAT WOULD THEY BE AND WHY?

Connection, fun and support.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO FOR THE 2026 ALLIED HEALTH AWARDS GALA IN ADELAIDE?

Connecting in person with old and new allied health friends, and celebrating each other and our work.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO JOIN THE AHA NETWORKING SERIES IN YOUR CITY, AND WHAT WERE YOU HOPING TO GAIN FROM IT?

I attended the Perth allied health networking event to build meaningful connections, share neurodiversity-affirming practice, and learn from colleagues across disciplines. Networking strengthens collaboration, improves referral pathways, and ultimately supports more ethical, inclusive, and effective outcomes for the clients and communities we serve.

I was hoping to gain meaningful professional connections, opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration, shared learning from other allied health practitioners, and stronger referral pathways. I also wanted to exchange ideas about neurodiversity-affirming practice and stay connected to the evolving allied health landscape in Perth.

WAS THERE A CONVERSATION, CONNECTION, OR MOMENT DURING THE EVENT THAT REALLY STUCK WITH YOU? TELL US ABOUT IT.

It was especially meaningful to connect in person with Nicole Pates from Western Kids Hub after previously only meeting virtually, like many attendees. Being face-to-face allowed space to genuinely connect, share experiences, and validate shared concerns within our industry, particularly the uncertainty surrounding Thriving Kids. We also acknowledged the unique position of building a business after establishing a strong social media presence. As an OT-only practice, these connections with other allied health professionals are essential to true collaboration and the multidisciplinary support our clients need.

HOW DID THE ATMOSPHERE OR ENERGY OF THE EVENT MAKE YOU FEEL AS AN ALLIED HEALTH PROFESSIONAL?

The atmosphere and energy of the event created a strong sense of unity and shared purpose. It was grounding and affirming to be surrounded by allied health professionals who are collectively committed to supporting our communities, reminding me that our work extends beyond individual practices to a broader, values-driven impact.

DID YOU MEET SOMEONE NEW WHO EXPANDED YOUR PERSPECTIVE OR OPENED UP AN OPPORTUNITY FOR YOU?

The connections I made resulted in increased opportunities for referrals and to provide external training on neurodiversity to other practices.

WHAT IS ONE KEY INSIGHT, IDEA, OR TAKEAWAY YOU WALKED AWAY WITH AFTER ATTENDING THE NETWORKING SERIES?

My fears and anxieties mirror those of many other allied health business owners and that we are most capable when we are united in our fight and can raise each other up.

HOW DOES COMING TOGETHER WITH OTHER ALLIED HEALTH PROFESSIONALS ACROSS AUSTRALIA IMPACT YOUR SENSE OF COMMUNITY OR PURPOSE?

This positively impacted my sense of connection and purpose as we all share the same values of client- centred, evidence-based and neurodiversityaffirming care.

IF YOU COULD DESCRIBE YOUR EXPERIENCE AT THE NETWORKING SERIES IN THREE WORDS, WHAT WOULD THEY BE AND WHY?

Celebratory, connection and fun!

WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO FOR THE 2026 ALLIED HEALTH AWARDS GALA IN ADELAIDE?

Coming together with all of the leaders of our industry to collaborate, connect and celebrate each other.

WHAT MESSAGE WOULD YOU LOVE TO SHARE WITH OTHER ALLIED HEALTH PROFESSIONALS WHO ARE CONSIDERING ATTENDING FUTURE AHA EVENTS?

Do it!

Celebratory,

connection and fun!

A LIFE OF MEANINGFUL IMPACT: REMEMBERING CHRIS MACKEY

Dr Chris Mackey was a psychologist in the truest sense of the word. Thoughtful, generous, deeply human, and unwavering in his belief that people are capable of growth, meaning, and renewal.

With more than four decades devoted to psychology and psychotherapy, Chris’s contribution to allied health extended far beyond the consulting room. His work spanned public hospitals, private practice, research, education, media, and authorship, all underpinned by a genuine desire to make mental health more accessible, hopeful, and grounded in everyday life.

Based in Geelong, Chris spent nearly 30 years leading Chris Mackey and Associates, mentoring clinicians and supporting clients through some of life’s most complex moments. He was known not only for his clinical insight, but for the warmth and calm he brought into every interaction. Qualities that earned him deep respect from peers and clients alike.

In 2019, Chris was recognised by the Allied Health Awards as Psychologist of the Year, acknowledging the breadth of his impact across the profession. That same year, he continued to share his thinking widely through his writing, media appearances, and his book The Positive Psychology of Synchronicity, exploring how meaning, optimism, and resilience can shape wellbeing.

Chris was also a familiar and trusted voice to the broader community, appearing regularly on television, radio, in print, and through his podcast Psych Spiels and Silver Linings. He had a rare ability to speak about mental health with clarity and compassion, making complex ideas feel relatable and hopeful.

Above all, Chris will be remembered for the care he gave so freely. He showed up with generosity, curiosity, and quiet strength, leaving people better than he found them. As a profession, and as a community, we are better because of his work.

The Allied Health Awards is proud to have recognised him, and even prouder to honour his memory. Chris Mackey’s legacy is not only measured in achievements, but in lives changed, conversations opened, and hope restored. He will be deeply missed, and always remembered.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO JOIN THE AHA NETWORKING SERIES IN YOUR CITY, AND WHAT WERE YOU HOPING TO GAIN FROM IT?

Well, I actually went to all but one (Sydney)! I love Sarena’s vision to create a community for all allied health professionals to come together and utilise each other’s strengths to support our patients and the community. A deeper connection with colleagues around Australia is what I was hoping to get from them, and they sure delivered.

WAS THERE A CONVERSATION, CONNECTION, OR MOMENT DURING THE EVENT THAT REALLY STUCK WITH YOU? TELL US ABOUT IT.

I had several. It is always inspiring to hear about people’s personal journeys and the how and why behind what they do. Many had humble beginnings, and all were passionate about making the lives of the people we support better in any way they could. That is what I love about this community. Shared values, beliefs and goals.

DID YOU MEET SOMEONE NEW WHO EXPANDED YOUR PERSPECTIVE OR OPENED UP AN OPPORTUNITY FOR YOU?

These events are a fantastic opportunity to foster collaboration across disciplines. I can’t say anything specific, but I spoke with many who shared ideas about the different types of challenges we experience, particularly fellow clinic owners. It’s nice to feel less alone and to be able to share not only the challenges, but also the successes and joys of running a group practice.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO FOR THE 2026 ALLIED HEALTH AWARDS GALA IN ADELAIDE?

Well to winning psychologist of the year again, of course! (haha joking). I am looking forward to another special night with some amazing people. The last event was incredible.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO JOIN THE AHA NETWORKING SERIES IN YOUR CITY, AND WHAT WERE YOU HOPING TO GAIN FROM IT?

I attended with my Podcast co-hosts Sarah and Nikki – so a great opportunity for us to get together in real life and to meet with other passionate Allied Health Professionals.

WAS THERE A CONVERSATION, CONNECTION, OR MOMENT DURING THE EVENT THAT REALLY STUCK WITH YOU? TELL US ABOUT IT.

I enjoyed all of the conversations during the night. I love being around allied health professionals who love what they do. So hearing about what their roles, businesses and passions was fantastic!

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO JOIN THE AHA NETWORKING SERIES IN YOUR CITY, AND WHAT WERE YOU HOPING TO GAIN FROM IT?

I joined the AHA Networking Event because we can feel incredibly connected in the work we do, but surprisingly siloed in how we do it. I wanted to step out of the day-to-day, meet others who I had connected with on Linked In, but not met in person and be in a room with people who genuinely “get it”, the clinical complexity, the emotional load, the admin, and the privilege of helping someone rebuild their life. I was hoping to gain fresh perspective, real-world ideas I could take back to my team, and a few new relationships that last beyond one event.

WAS THERE A CONVERSATION, CONNECTION, OR MOMENT DURING THE EVENT THAT REALLY STUCK WITH YOU? TELL US ABOUT IT.

Yes, discussion re legislative and government changes we have very little control over as individuals, yet we’re often the ones expected to absorb the impact at the coalface. What struck me was the shared sense that we can’t navigate that in isolation. It reinforced how important it is for allied health to come together as a unified group, speak with one voice, and advocate for practical, evidence-based changes that protect both clinicians and the people we support.

HOW DID THE ATMOSPHERE OR ENERGY OF THE EVENT MAKE YOU FEEL AS AN ALLIED HEALTH PROFESSIONAL?

It felt energising and grounding at the same time, in a very relaxed and comfortable atmosphere.

DID YOU MEET SOMEONE NEW WHO EXPANDED YOUR PERSPECTIVE OR OPENED UP AN OPPORTUNITY FOR YOU?

Yes, I met a few people who genuinely added value straight away. One clinician shared practical, grounded ideas for driving organisational change and pointed me toward a couple of targeted courses I’m already looking into. I also met an excellent OT who offered clear support and advice around wheelchair “prescription” – which I’ve already tapped into – and I came away with a couple of helpful staffing contacts as well.

WHAT IS ONE KEY INSIGHT, IDEA, OR TAKEAWAY YOU WALKED AWAY WITH AFTER ATTENDING THE NETWORKING SERIES?

My biggest takeaway was how hungry allied health professionals are for practical connection, not just inspiration. People want real conversations about what works, what doesn’t, and how to protect quality care while staying sustainable.

HOW DOES COMING TOGETHER WITH OTHER ALLIED HEALTH PROFESSIONALS ACROSS AUSTRALIA IMPACT YOUR SENSE OF COMMUNITY OR PURPOSE?

It reconnects me to why I started. When you’re in the trenches, it’s easy to focus on the next report, the next call, the next barrier. Coming together creates a wider view, this is a national community of skilled people doing deeply human work. It reminds me that purpose isn’t just individual; it’s collective.

IF YOU COULD DESCRIBE YOUR EXPERIENCE AT THE NETWORKING SERIES IN THREE WORDS, WHAT WOULD THEY BE AND WHY? Connected. Recharged. Hopeful.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO FOR THE 2026 ALLIED HEALTH AWARDS GALA IN ADELAIDE?

Celebrating the people who quietly go above and beyond – often without recognition. Awards nights matter because they remind us that progress is happening, innovation is real, and the work is seen. I’m also looking forward to the conversations in the room.

WHAT MESSAGE WOULD YOU LOVE TO SHARE WITH OTHER ALLIED HEALTH PROFESSIONALS WHO ARE CONSIDERING ATTENDING FUTURE AHA EVENTS?

Go, especially if you’re feeling tired or isolated. You don’t have to network like a “networker. ” Just show up as yourself, have a few real conversations, and let the community do what it does best, support, challenge, and inspire. You’ll leave with at least one idea, one connection, and one reminder that you’re part of something bigger than your workload.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO JOIN THE AHA NETWORKING SERIES IN YOUR CITY, AND WHAT WERE YOU HOPING TO GAIN FROM IT?

I live in Brisbane but was in Melbourne for a course and was very excited to network as the dates lined up! I will be at the Brisbane one too!!

WAS THERE A CONVERSATION, CONNECTION, OR MOMENT DURING THE EVENT THAT REALLY STUCK WITH YOU? TELL US ABOUT IT.

Reuniting with Sarena was amazing. She seems more like a real person to me now! Rather than a Gala Glamazon.

HOW DID THE ATMOSPHERE OR ENERGY OF THE EVENT MAKE YOU FEEL AS AN ALLIED HEALTH PROFESSIONAL?

It felt great to talk to so many others in a positive environment. It was great to see unexpected friends and introduce the friends who came to others I had met at the Gala in 2024.

DID YOU MEET SOMEONE NEW WHO EXPANDED YOUR PERSPECTIVE OR OPENED UP AN OPPORTUNITY FOR YOU?

I enjoyed discussing the different perspective of running allied health business – masculine energy vs feminine energy can be quite different - but I love hearing ideas from everyone.

WHAT IS ONE KEY INSIGHT, IDEA, OR TAKEAWAY YOU WALKED AWAY WITH AFTER ATTENDING THE NETWORKING SERIES?

Someone I met at the 2024 Gala, and in Melbourneis now doing some supervision for me and hopefully coming onboard with my team at Not Just Bendy in the future.

HOW DOES COMING TOGETHER WITH OTHER ALLIED HEALTH PROFESSIONALS ACROSS AUSTRALIA IMPACT YOUR SENSE OF COMMUNITY OR PURPOSE?

I certainly feel like I know more people out there than I did a couple of years ago. Also it seems like the more you share yourself with others - the more you get back in time and in ways you did not expect because of it.

IF YOU COULD DESCRIBE YOUR EXPERIENCE AT THE NETWORKING SERIES IN THREE WORDS, WHAT WOULD THEY BE AND WHY?

Positive. Lively. Affirming.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO FOR THE 2026 ALLIED HEALTH AWARDS GALA IN ADELAIDE?

Dressing up, chatting and dancing.

WHAT MESSAGE WOULD YOU LOVE TO SHARE WITH OTHER ALLIED HEALTH PROFESSIONALS WHO ARE CONSIDERING ATTENDING FUTURE AHA EVENTS?

Do it! It’s a real thing! Be brave and throw your name in the ring for one of the awards. You might surprise yourself.

Positive. Lively. Affirming.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO JOIN THE AHA NETWORKING SERIES IN YOUR CITY, AND WHAT WERE YOU HOPING TO GAIN FROM IT?

I wanted to meet other Allied Health Professionals and to enjoy some conversations beyond the clinical/ work contexts where we usually engage. Connecting with other professionals in my state/ city is also a great way to learn from each other and get inspiration for my own work, as well as support during what is a tumultuous time for allied health professionals (with the many new legislations and programs being updated by the government e.g. NDIS).

WAS THERE A CONVERSATION, CONNECTION, OR MOMENT DURING THE EVENT THAT REALLY STUCK WITH YOU? TELL US ABOUT IT.

I was impressed when Sarena recognised my name and my team. We had never met in person before but she knew that North Shore Speech Therapy have been finalists in the awards for a number of years! It was great to connect in person.

HOW DID THE ATMOSPHERE OR ENERGY OF THE EVENT MAKE YOU FEEL AS AN ALLIED HEALTH PROFESSIONAL?

Allied Health Professionals are a fun bunch! I was also inspired by the entrepreneurial skills of many who had such great ideas and the passion and energy to bring them to fruition!

DID YOU MEET SOMEONE NEW WHO EXPANDED YOUR PERSPECTIVE OR OPENED UP AN OPPORTUNITY FOR YOU?

I couldn’t narrow this to just one person.... It was fabulous to catch up with Sarena in person (she is so busy at the awards nights), I enjoyed meeting Sarah Collison who is doing great things in the NDIS advocacy space, and catching up with many OTs (there were no other speechies at the event ) to hear about what they are doing in developing AI tools (like Perci), or apps like Theratrak, or in building their businesses in mentoring and supporting other AHPs.

WHAT IS ONE KEY INSIGHT, IDEA, OR TAKEAWAY YOU WALKED AWAY WITH AFTER ATTENDING THE NETWORKING SERIES?

There are so many motivated and passionate AHPs out there! Our professions all do great things!

HOW DOES COMING TOGETHER WITH OTHER ALLIED HEALTH PROFESSIONALS ACROSS AUSTRALIA IMPACT YOUR SENSE OF COMMUNITY OR PURPOSE?

It reenergises me and encourages me to think outside the box. So many AHPs have met the challenges of their work head on and come up with innovative solutions that they are then generously sharing with others. We do amazing things and I love that we are also here to build each other up –within our own professions and across the breadth of allied health professions.

IF YOU COULD DESCRIBE YOUR EXPERIENCE AT THE NETWORKING SERIES IN THREE WORDS, WHAT WOULD THEY BE AND WHY?

Fun!!! Inspiring. Fulfilling (through hearing about everyone’s experiences and journeys, and the constant full - filling of my champagne glass :)!

WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO FOR THE 2026 ALLIED HEALTH AWARDS GALA IN ADELAIDE?

Reconnecting with the people that I met at the networking event, meeting even more AHPs and celebrating the amazing work that we all do every day!

WHAT MESSAGE WOULD YOU LOVE TO SHARE WITH OTHER ALLIED HEALTH PROFESSIONALS WHO ARE CONSIDERING ATTENDING FUTURE AHA EVENTS?

Take the opportunity to step away from the desk or the clinic and enjoy some ‘downtime’ with your tribe. There are many challenges in the work that we do (and of course lots of joy too) and it is inspiring to energising to share this with others.
