SHOWCASE WEDNESDAY / Electro FLEE is a cultural engineering platform dedicated to the documentation and enhancement of hybrid cultures and operates as a publishing house, music label and performers’ collective. It was founded by the music producers Alan Marzo, Olivier Duport and Carl Ahnebrink. Flee celebrates and promotes emerging forms of East-African music where traditional music encounters avant-gardist electronic music. In 2017, it released its first project entitled ‘Benga Music – A Signature Genre from Kenya’ comprising of a vinyl compilation and a printed journal. Following a two-week music residency, this concert will feature collaborations between the French techno producer Tite, the Kenyan producer Joseph Kamaru, aka KMRU, known for creating emotive ambient music at the intersection of sonic landscapes, electronica and techno, the Italian electronic music composer, Pier Alfeo and the Flee founders.

NINA OGOT BAND

Kenyan songbird and guitarist, Nina Ogot, launches her third album ‘Dala’ which she recorded in Germany backed by a 15-piece band comprising of a full horn section. Nina will be joined on stage by these musicians from Germany. The album blends Kenyan musical traditions with upbeat African and Western sounds offering a rich and colourful musical palette. Nina started her musical career on her return from France where she studied Media and Mass Communication at the Université de Nancy II. She released her debut album ‘Ninairobi’ in 2009. In 2017, together with the Kenyan benga musician, Winyo, they released ‘Yote Yote’.

Nina Ogot, chanteuse et guitariste kenyane, lance son troisième album ’Dala’ qu’elle a enregistré en Allemagne en compagnie d’un groupe de 15 musiciens. Nina sera accompagnée sur scène par une section de cuivres et ses musiciens allemands. L’album mélange les traditions musicales kenyanes avec des sonorités africaines et occidentales offrant une palette musicale riche et colorée. Nina a commencé sa carrière musicale à son retour de France où elle a étudié les médias et la communication à l’Université de Nancy II. Elle a sorti son premier album ’Ninairobi’ en 2009 suivi de ‘Yote Yoté’ en 2017 avec le musicien kenyan Winyo.

KENYA ART PANORAMA

The Alliance Française, and prior to that the French Cultural Centre, galleries have been a springboard for so many Kenyan visual artists since the mid 1970s. These historic galleries have hosted the works of hundreds of artists over the decades.

La galerie de l’Alliance Française, et auparavant du Centre Culturel Français, a été un tremplin pour de nombreux artistes kenyans depuis le milieu des années 70. Cet espace historique a accueilli les œuvres d’une centaine d’artistes au fil des décennies.

To mark its 70th anniversary, the Alliance Française has invited several of these artists, for a panoramic exhibition representing the different generations of artists to celebrate the Kenyan arts landscape.

A l’occasion de son 70ème anniversaire, l’Alliance Française invite plusieurs de ces artistes à une exposition panoramique représentant les différentes générations pour célébrer le paysage artistique kenyan.

The Alliance Française is proud to have been part of this vibrant scene that has evolved consistently to reflect the changing narratives and trends but more importantly offering a space where heterogeneous voices and aesthetics can flourish.

Uhuru Republic is an interdisciplinary artistic collective born between Torino, Genova, Dar Es Salaam, Zanzibar and Nairobi. The artists give a new interpretation to traditional African music and dance and merge them with old and new Italian/ European trends. This concert in Nairobi will feature the Italian vocalist Giulia Passera, the Italian Producer, DJ and sound explorer Filoq, and Kenyaâ€™s very own Makadem on nyatiti and other guest artists.

LES METANUITS

Les Métanuits is an adaptation for saxophone and piano of ‘Les Métamorphoses Nocturnes’, the string quartet by the Hungarian composer, György Ligeti. It is a wonderful work of improvisation, reinventing the original score yet remaining true to the powerful rhythmic textures, by the pianist and composer, Roberto Negro and the saxophonist and jazz composer, Emile Parisien. Roberto was trained at the Conservatoire de Chambéry, He was awarded the prestigious Victoires du Jazz 2018. Emile joined the Jazz College of Marciac and then went on to study classical and contemporary music at the Conservatoire of Toulouse. He won the Victoires du Jazz in 2009 and 2014. Roberto’s versatility and Emile’s virtuosity will offer a thrilling evening of jazz.

THIBAULT CAUVIN

Thibault Cauvin is one of the most talented, charismatic and sought-after guitarists. He has performed as a soloist in 120 countries and on the most prestigious stages: Carnegie Hall in New York, Shanghai Concert Hall, Tchaikovsky Hall in Moscow, Wigmore Hall in London, the Théâtre des Champs Elysées in Paris, Gasteig in Munich,...

He started learning to play the guitar at the age of five and went on to graduate with honours from the Conservatoires of Bordeaux and Paris. He holds the world record for having won 36 prizes in major international guitar competitions. Unanimously recognized by the music critics as ‘the Ambassador of the new classical guitar’, a rare opportunity to catch this technically perfect, musically limitless classical guitarist in concert in Nairobi.

VIEUX FARKA TOURE

Often referred to as “The Hendrix of the Sahara”, Vieux Farka Touré is the son of legendary Grammy award winning Malian guitar player Ali Farka Touré. Vieux stepped onto his own world stage in 2010 when he performed at the opening ceremony of the FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

Souvent surnommé ‘L’Hendrix du Sahara’, Vieux Farka Touré est le fils du légendaire guitariste malien Ali Farka Touré, lauréat de Grammy Awards. En 2010, il s’est retrouvé sur la scène internationale lors de son concert à l’occasion de la cérémonie d’ouverture de la Coupe du Monde.

Inspired by the Malian griot traditions, Vieux Farka Touré has carved his own musical identity blending rock, funk, latin music and other African influences, yet remaining true to the roots of his father’s music.

Inspiré par les traditions griots maliennes, Vieux Farka Touré s’est forgé sa propre identité musicale, mêlant rock, funk, musique latine et autres influences africaines, tout en restant fidèle aux racines de la musique de son père.

Known and admired for his percussive dance rhythms, his live performances are highly energized, captivating crowds with his speed and dexterity on the guitar and his magnificent vocal performances.

SPOTLIGHT ON KENYAN MUSIC

A throwback to the Spotlight on Kenyan Music series that culminated in 6 compilations of contemporary Kenyan music rooted in the country’s diverse musical traditions. For 10 years, the project explored musical traditions as a resource for innovation and creativity. The Spotlight programme reached over 1000 musicians across the country with almost a 100 artists featured on the 6 albums.

This 70th anniversary celebratory concert will feature performances by the trio of Kenyan women of Somali origin from Garissa, Gargar; the taarab music group Lelele Africa from Mombasa; Juma Tutu with swahili jazz and Makadem with his signature benga beats.

Le projet Spotlight on Kenyan Music a vu la production de 6 compilations de musiques kenyanes contemporaines enracinées dans les diverses traditions musicales du pays. Pendant 10 ans, le projet a exploré les traditions musicales comme une ressource pour l’innovation et la créativité. Le programme Spotlight a touché plus de 1000 musiciens à travers le pays avec près de 100 artistes sur les 6 albums. Ce concert à l’occasion des 70 ans de l’Alliance Française mettra en vedette le trio de femmes kenyanes d’origine somalienne de Garissa, Gargar ; le groupe de musique taarab Lelele Africa de Mombasa ; Juma Tutu et son jazz swahili et Makadem, avec ses rythmes benga.

MUMALA

Mumala Maloba is a singer, songwriter, who grew up listening to the sounds of legends like Yvonne Chaka Chaka. She started her musical journey at a very young age performing in musicals and composing songs. She is an alumni of the Sauti Academy music programme run by Natalie Lukkenear. Mumala released her first single ‘Where did the love go?’ in 2013, followed by her second single ‘Paper chasing” ft Octopizzo and ‘Ride Along’ in 2014. A lawyer by profession, Mumala recently launched her debut experimental EP ‘Equilibrium’ produced by Atwal Music.

Les Misérables is a riveting portrayal of racial division and unrest int he banlieues of Paris. The setting is the tough Montfermeil district in the east of Paris where three members of an anti-crime brigade confront tensions between rival gangs. The film was selected for the 2019 Cannes Film Festival official competition and recently won Best Picture at the Durban International Film Festival.

DISAPPEARING AFRICA

Photography is one of the many mediums that Teddy Mitchener uses to express his creativity. A graduate of The Duke Ellington School of the Arts, Teddy credits the institution for having instilled in him the love of other art forms such as plaster and stone sculpting, woodwork, pencil drawing and painting.

‘Disappearing Africa’ has been inspired by a photoshoot of an ethnographic collection of African masks in Tanzania. Teddy merges the various mediums to recreate African masks on faces of models that are a statement of the need to preserve the cultural identity of the African people and to fight cultural erosion, in an increasingly homogeneous world.

La photographie est l’un des nombreux médiums que Teddy Mitchener utilise pour exprimer sa créativité. Diplômé de la Duke Ellington School of the Arts, Teddy attribue à l’institution le mérite de lui avoir inculqué l’amour d’autres formes d’art comme la sculpture sur plâtre et sur pierre, le travail du bois, le dessin au crayon et la peinture. Disappearing Africa’ a été inspiré par une séance photo d’une collection ethnographique de masques africains en Tanzanie. Teddy fusionne les différents médiums pour recréer des masques africains sur des visages de modèles qui témoignent de la nécessité de préserver l’identité culturelle des peuples africains, de lutter contre l’érosion culturelle, dans un monde de plus en plus homogène.

STRAIGHT LINE CONNECTION Straight Line Connection is a rock / metal band based in Kenya. Formed around 2017, the band comprises of Gun (Vocals, Guitar), Reuben (Bass, Guitar) and Param (Percussion). The band recently launched its debut album ‘Spaceless’ in Nairobi. Heavy and the Beast, the all Kenyan rock music website describe the album as a beautifully crafted masterpiece. ‘From start to finish Straight Line Connection manage to blend the ingredients of rhythmic drumming, guttural as well as clean vocals, and both slow and speed-oriented guitars, this is one of the rock / metal albums of all time, simply a must own for any rock/metal fan.’

SPOKEN WORD battle

UNCHAINED VOICES II An epic batlle between two of Kenya’s leading spoken word artists, Mufasa (Ken Kibet) and Teardrops (Mark Joshua Ouma). Unchained Voices II will demonstrate the transformative power of words in an artform that is immensely popular with the Kenyan youth.

Teardrops is a ‘sheng’ poet. His mastery of sheng and powerful wordplay have earned him the label of ‘Shengspeare’ which is also the title of his 2nd album. A critic of an errant world, Teardrops describes himself as a rebel with a-cous-tic.

Mufasa is a versatile performing poet who uses spoken word poetry to tell stories inspired by day-to-day life on the African continent. His words dance with vulnerability and honesty, a sublime communication provoking change and reflection. He recently launched his first poetry book ‘Raising a Sun’.

An unflinching look at the #FeesMustFall student movement in South Africa in 2015 which started as a protest over the cost of education and morphed into the most militant national revolt since the country’s first democratic elections in 1994.

Maid in Hell offers a glimpse into the commonplace reality of harassment, abuse, rape and 18-hour work days which migrant domestic workers across the Middle East face. It gives unprecedented access to this frightening and brutal form of modern slavery.

Mon. 21 & Tue. 22 Oct. 6pm|FREE ENTRY ‘SLAVERY ROUTES’ - Documentary screenings and discussions ‘Slavery Routes’ is a documentary in four parts, co-directed by Daniel Cattier, Juan Gélas and Fanny Glissant, with historical advisor Catherine CoqueryVidrovitch, Professor Emeritus at the University of Paris-Diderot. This is the story of a world whose territories and own frontiers were built by the slave trade. A world where violence, subjugation and profit imposed their routes. The series traces the history of slave trade from the 5th to the 19th century, using various historical and scientific resources. The narrative is supported by scientific points of view with the filmmakers using compelling visuals to shed light on the different eras. It also looks at the consequences of this history on contemporary societies.
