HADITHI HADITHI! HADITHI NJOO!
Gloria Muthoka is a self-taught artist, based at the GoDown Arts Centre, who engages in both traditional and digital art. In this exhibition, she presents a series of colouful paintings based on African folktales. The paintings recollect stories that have been passed down generations, carrying with them valuable lessons and morals. Storytelling is a ritual in many traditions, often employing the call and response style. In the East African region, when one tells a story, the storyteller announces that a story is about to be told: ‘Hadithi! Hadithi!’ (Story! Story!) and the audience responds in
Gloria Muthoka est une artiste autodidacte, basée au GoDown Arts Centre, qui se consacre à la fois à l’art traditionnel et à l’art numérique. Dans cette exposition, elle présente une série de peintures basées sur des contes africains. Les peintures rappellent des histoires transmises de génération en génération. En Afrique de l’Est, quand on raconte une histoire, le conteur annonce qu’une histoire est sur le point d’être racontée: «Hadithi! Hadithi! » (Histoire! Histoire!) Et le public répond en chœur: « Hadithi Njoo! » (Que l’histoire vienne).

H_ART THE BAND H_Art the Band is composed of former Slam Africa Poetry Kings, Mordecai Mwini and Wachira Gatama, joined by the self-taught guitarist Kenneth Muya, aka Kenchez. The trio have been nurtured at the Sauti Academy’s Music programme and have developed a unique performance style that they have labeled ‘AfroPoetry’. Their conspicuous fashion sense and engaging stage presence continue to earn them audiences across different generations and cultures. Winners of several Kenyan awards for their single ‘Uliza Kiatu’, the trio were also nominated at the 2015 All Africa Music Awards in the ‘Revelation of the African Continent’ and ‘Most Promising Artiste in Africa’ for their second single ‘Nikikutazama’.

MACHINEs A LIRE
For the 2018 Lire en Fête activities targeting students of French, we present the exhibition ‘Machines à Lire’, put together by Insitut Français, the French agency for international cultural cooperation.
Through a series of digital applications, the exhibition aims to show how French authors, editors, producers and creatives are using new technologies to transform our experiences of storytelling, reading and writing. IBAAKU EDDIE GREY & THE ENSEMBLE Eddie Grey has been defined as a forerunner in the Jazz and fusion scene in East and Central Africa. A self-taught musician, Eddie playfully crosses over from one genre to the next, though he is heavily influenced by jazz harmony, classical arrangement, African rhythm and electronic grooves. Eddie has released 2 albums to date ‘No trains to Kibera’ and ‘Stories by the Lake’. Always seeking to broaden his influences and expression, Eddie Grey has embraced modern electronic music creation by adding on to his arsenal electronic samplers and synths for a psychedelic mix of jazz, afro beat, R&B, hip hop and electronica, leading to his 3rd album ‘World to Come’, to be released later this year. In the Ensemble, Eddie Grey is joined by Sedar Malaki on bass, Amani Baya on drums, and a couple of guest artistes on vocals and saxophone.

ELAIZA
Elaiza is a German trio made up of Elzbieta Steinmetz, lead singer and pianist, Natalie Plöger, double bassist and Laura Zimmerman, multi-instrumentalist. The Berlin based performers describe their music as modern folk. Elsbieta and Natalie represented Germany at the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest with the song ‘Is it right’. Their songs are influenced by the mixed Polish, Ukranian and German background of the singer/songwriter, Elzbieta, who has been writing songs since the age of 16. To date, the trio have released two albums ‘Gallery’ and ‘Restless’. The group has been invited to Kenya by the Embassy of Germany on the occasion of the German Unity Day.

KENYA ARTS DIARY
Since 2010, the Kenya Arts Diary team led by Nani Croze of Kitengela Glass, has been putting together an annual diary comprising of around 60 different artists every year. The diary is a colourful catalogue of the contemporary art scene in Kenya and it serves to bring art closer to the people. The diaries have become valuable collectibles as they are an annual record profiling artists and showing evolving trends and transitions. This exhibition will feature works that have been selected for the 2019 Kenya Arts Dairy giving the public an early preview of the treasures contained in the upcoming diary.

MAIA AND THE BIG SKY Fresh from Woodford Folk Festival, Perth International Festival (Australia), Sauti Za Busara Festival (Zanzibar), Kenyan songstress Maia & The Big Sky are currently making waves across international stages. Maia’s lyrics take you on a journey of power, love, politics and the strength of women. She blends the sounds of Kenyan coastal rhythms with soul, folk and Jazz creating a familiarity and warmth that transcends continents. She has earned herself two African Academy Awards for her song Uko Wapi and has just released her new self titled album Maia & the Big Sky on vinyl, one of the first Kenyan artists to do so since the 1970s.

Magic becomes the tool that questions us on our rapport with the real. The spectators’ telephones are the medium for the magical effects.

The public will be distributed across tables like in an open co-working hub and the magician will move from table to table.

The Alliance Française is a language and cultural relations organization. It was created in 1883 in Paris by renowned humanists, including Louis Pasteur and Jules Verne, with the principal objective of promoting and teaching the French language around the world. Since then, it has developed into a global network of the Alliance Française institutions operating in 135 countries around the world, with the common aim of fostering friendship between peoples, through the promotion of the French language and cultural diversity. The Alliance Française de Nairobi was founded in 1949. It has grown into one of the largest in Africa offering French language courses to thousands of students annually. It is the only accredited institution in Kenya for international and professional French language certification. It is also the only officially recognized institution in Kenya for certified translations. The institution offers a rich programme of annual activities showcasing local and international Arts and encouraging creativity. It supports the production and presentation of artistic works, across all disciplines, that reflect the diversity, aspirations and contradictions of our contemporary society and open up space for dialogue.
