He embodies a blend of these various places that has resulted in him becoming one of the pioneers of East Africa’s most popular fusion of traditional music and Hip Hop Bongo Flava. ----- ‘ THE CULTURE TRIP His career took off when he released his first music video “Jitolee” in 2009. This led to a number of regional tours within East Africa and Europe. In 2010 he was selected as one of the judges for the Tanzanian equivalent of X-Factor. Mzungu Kichaa won best upcoming artist at the release of his debut album in 2009 at the African Achievement Awards, and has been nominated for two Danish Music Awards in the “world” category.

LEST WE F Devised and directed 11 November 2018 marks the centenary of the end of the First World War, a war that took place largely in Europe but gradually sucked in other forces. So it spread to the African continent, to involve imperial possessions like Kenya and Tanganyika. ‘Lest We Forget’ is devised and directed by Davina Leonard, and performed by Davina and John SibiOkumu. It will serve to recall this gruesome historical episode through poetry and prose addressing the pity and futility of war, in general. The audience will hear the words of Rudyard Kipling, Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon within a wide-ranging compilation which will also evoke the impact of ‘the Great War’ in East Africa.

Il s’est donc étendu au continent africain et impliqua des possessions impériales comme le Kenya et le Tanganyika. ‘Le spectacle ‘Lest We Forget’ servira à rappeler ce terrible épisode historique à travers la poésie et la prose abordant la misère et l’inutilité de la guerre en général. L’auditoire entendra les paroles de Rudyard Kipling, Wilfred Owen et Siegfried Sassoon dans une vaste compilation qui évoquera également l’impact de la «Grande Guerre» en Afrique de l’Est.

ROCKY
IBAAKU Rocky is the story of three friends from Lille, the multiinstrumentalists, Olivier Bruggeman, Tom Devo and Laurent Paingault, who meet the centrepiece, the singer Inès Kokou of Togolese ancestry. Inès’s powerful voice is reminiscent of Dionne Warwick. The band is a real groove machine, offering a mix of soul, rock and disco. Rocky evokes the soul divas and the glorious years of 90s dance music at its best: powerful and utterly jubilant. The group’s first album ‘Soft Machine’ is a feast of flavour. “We make positive music to dance to. If that might sometimes seem easy, it’s because it’s well-made and you can’t see the stiches” remark Rocky.

IBAAKU WANJA WOHORO Wanja is a soulful singer-songwriter and guitarist. She began songwriting seriously at the age of 17; teaching herself the guitar and the piano and practicing accompaniment and composition. Her influences include the mellow sultry sounds of Amy Winehouse, Lianne La Havas, Nai Palm, Ella Fitzgerald and Corinne Bailey-Rae alongside an extensive exposure to Indie/Folk and jazz music. In 2014 she released her first EP ‘High Tide’ which includes 5 songs of varying genres, all exploring the different sides of her unique musicianship, cultural influences and vocals. In February 2015 she released a new tropical summer single ‘Counting’ and an accompanying music video. She recently completed a Music major at The University of Sydney, gigging and composing in Sydney throughout her degree. She is currently composing and recording her debut album ‘Matriarch‘: a creative endeavor telling the story of contemporary womanhood through a personal lens.

IS DEVOLUTION WORKING? Devolution was set in motion in Kenya in 2010 with the promulgation of a new constitution that introduced two tiers of government, the national and county level, and devolved certain functions to the counties. The 2013 elections led to the establishment of 47 county governments from the previous 8 provinces. This Science Café will take the pulse of devolution five years down the line based on research conducted by Kenya and French researchers in 5 counties (Meru, Marsabit, Mombasa, Migori and Nandi). The results of the research are contained in the documentary ‘Portraying Devolution in Kenya’, produced by the French Institute for Research in Africa, under the direction of Laurent Gaillardon, which will be launched on this occasion, followed by a public debate in the presence of the researchers on the gains and challenges of the devolved system of governance.

The Alliance Française, in partnership with Amnesty International Kenya, will celebrate the gift of the Universal Declaration through exhibitions and performances by a selection of artists who through their artistic practice invite reflection and action on the ways that each of us can help defend and protect these rights.

In her installation and performative piece entitled ‘Double Consciousness’, Syowia dissects and brings into question issues of race, perception, gender and memory, examining how our contemporary human experience is influenced by constructed history, past and present violence, colonialism, family and sexuality. Using mirrors and garments, the artist will perform and narrate multiple moments of power and domination, tension, breakage and rebuilding; symbolic of societies’ ebbs and flows, connecting to historical conditioning and society’s class and economical structures.

PEDAGOGY OF THE OPPRESSED
SAUTI UNTAMED II
Nikomambo argues that religion, politics and economic systems are some of the most oppressive social structures in the society, regardless of their importance. The ability to weigh down the people’s minds makes oppression mainstream and even accepted. It seems today that the only change that occurs is when the oppressed become the oppressor after learning this art.
Featuring the 5 piece high energy reggae band, Cheif and the Marshalls, who will be joined by the spoken word rap poet Story za Kapedo (Jospeh Maina) and the poet flossy flowy aka Nyokabi, as well as the dancers Alacoque and Esther, this musical will call for greater freedom, stronger respect and more compassion in view of enhancing the human rights space in Kenya, through the call to action #StandUp4Something.
Kisumu based artist, Nicholas ‘Nikomambo’ Odhiambo metaphorically examines oppression through a series of thought provoking pencil artworks.
Wibo Culture, a collective of artists and activists, will present a musical production ‘Sauti Untamed II’, directed by the John Udelele, musician.

Sanjally Jobarteh (Sandiali Diabaté) is descended from one of the most respected and influential Gambian griot families and son of the iconic kora player Amadu Bansang Jobarteh (Amadou Bansan Diabaté).
Originaire de la Gambie, l’auteur-compositeur, arrangeur, joueur de kora et interprète, Sanjally Jobarteh (Sandiali Diabaté), est le fils d’un des korafolas les plus respectés et les plus influents de son pays.
Author-composer, arranger, singer and kora player, Sanjally excels in the classical Manding repertoire as well as jazz, blues, electro, house and techno music and afro-fusion.

STORY STORY, COME COME Initiated by Positively African, a Nairobi based PanAfrican network of artists, activists and academics, the Festival draws on age-old African traditions of storytelling in order to revive the art, re-imagine African folktales and nurture a reading culture. This 2nd edition will present performances by tellers from Kenya, South Africa, Sierra Leone, Morocco and Australia on two stages, in addition to a reading nook, a listening booth and book stalls. An illustrated anthology of 12 re-imagined folktales by authors from across Africa and the Diaspora entitled ‘Story Story, Come Come’, including an audio book version to original music, will also be launched. The Festival will premiere the production ‘The Door of (No) Return’, an adaptation of some of the stories, in partnership with ZamaleoAct.
Initié par Positively African, une organisation regroupant un réseau panafricain d’artistes, de militants et d’universitaires, le Festival s’appuie sur d’anciennes traditions africaines de narration afin de faire revivre l’art, de ré-imaginer les contes africains et de nourrir une culture de la lecture. It was created in 1883 in Paris by renowned humanists, including Louis Pasteur and Jules Verne, with the principal objective of promoting and teaching the French language around the world. Since then, it has developed into a global network of the Alliance Française institutions operating in 135 countries around the world, with the common aim of fostering friendship between peoples, through the promotion of the French language and cultural diversity. The Alliance Française de Nairobi was founded in 1949. It has grown into one of the largest in Africa offering French language courses to thousands of students annually. It is the only accredited institution in Kenya for international and professional French language certification. It is also the only officially recognized institution in Kenya for certified translations. The institution offers a rich programme of annual activities showcasing local and international Arts and encouraging creativity. It supports the production and presentation of artistic works, across all disciplines, that reflect the diversity, aspirations and contradictions of our contemporary society and open up space for dialogue.
