CinemAlliance Every Monday @ 6pm, Free Entry All films in English or with English subtitles This month’s Cinemalliance programme will screen a selection of films that mark the 50th anniversary of the student and workers uprising in Paris that shaped a generation. The revolt against the antiquated French educational system turned into a general youth rebellion, joined by workers, disillusioned with the leadership of an ageing General de Gaulle in an oppressively hierarchical society. May 68 had an impact on French society that resounded for decades afterward. It is considered to this day as a cultural, social and moral turning point in the history of the country. ON PALESTINE IN NAIROBI presented by the British Institute of East Africa 7 May | Film-discussion | 1h40 Short experimental films, ‘Sci-Fi trilogy’, by Larissa Sansour, Palestinian multimedia artist, and ‘Home Movies Gaza’ by Basma Alsharif. Under the common themes of loss, belonging, heritage and national identity, the films explore different aspects of the political turmoil in the Middle East. The screening coincides with a photographic exhibition ‘On Palestine’ by Dr. Annie Pfingst at the British Institute in East Africa.

Things aren’t too good in the rest of the country either but that’s the least of Milou’s concerns. His mother has just died and the vultures have gathered to divide the spoils even before they have put the old lady in her coffin. ‘Tous au Larzac’ (Leadersheep) by C. Rouaud 21 May | 2010 | Documentary | 2h00 The film is a portrait of the birth of a political movement. It is about a non-violent, civil disobedience action by French farmers in the region of Larzac against the expansion of an army base that would have gobbled up their farmland. ‘Mourir à trente ANS’ (Half a life) by Romain Goupil 28 May | 1982 | Documentary | 1h35 Winner of Caméra d’Or at the 1982 Cannes Film Festival and César Award for Best First Feature Film.

The director recounts his youth as a teenage militant Trotskyite in the years leading up to May 1968, and the decade following it, climaxing with the suicide of his boyhood friend, the charismatic student leader Michel Recanati. It is a personal tale, as well as an in-depth look, at the political scene in France during that period.

SWAHILI ALLY Swahili Ally is a singer and kora player from Tanga, Tanzania. Born in a family of Digo musicians, Swahili Ally was coached by his grandparents and elders. He started performing with the Dar es Salaam based group of singers, dancers, musician, Lumumba Theatre Group, before joining the Dhow Music Academy in Zanzibar where he learnt to play the Kora, the iconic West African harp. He has since mastered this string instrument and fluently blends traditional Digo music with the unique sounds of the kora.

KENYAN AND ETHIOPIAN ATHLETICS Towards an alternative scientific approach

Launch of the book ‘Kenyan and Ethiopian Athletics - towards an alternative scientific approach’ by Benôit Gaudin (Assistant Professor in the Dept. of Sport Science of the Université de Versailles St. Quentin, France and currently on secondment at the Dept. of Sport Science of the University of Addis Abeba), and Bezabih Wolde (Assistant Professor in the Dept. of Sport Science at the University of Addis Abeba and Board Member of the Ethiopian Athletics Federation).

The launch will be preceded by screening of the Nat Geo documentary ‘Breaking 2’ which chronicles the journey of three world-class runners (Lelisa Desisa – Ethiopia, Eliud Kipchoge – Kenya and Zersenay Tadese – Eritrea) and their teams as they try to accomplish the unthinkable. Will the ‘secret’ of East African runners be revealed? Despite decades of research, no study has provided any sort of evidence that portrays biological otherness among populations in Kenya and Ethiopia which produces the best athletes in middle and long distance runners.

The 27th edition of the European Film Festival, coordinated by the EU Delegation, will run from 4th to 27th May. 20 Europeans countries are participating with 44 films. In addition, around 10 acclaimed Kenyan films will be shown, as well as a selection of films from the annual Smartphone Film Competition. This year’s Festival will be held across several venues around Nairobi thus enabling a large number of Nairobi residents to catch the films.

En outre, une dizaine de films kényans seront présentés, ainsi qu’une sélection de films du concours annuel Kenyan Smartphone Film Competition. France will be showing the film ‘Corporate’ by Nicolas Silhol. An ambitious HR Manager finds herself in the firing line when one of the employee’s commits suicide. The film is a brutal portrayal of the consequences of ruthless HR practices in an increasingly competitive corporate world.

A fusion of Maasai culture, futurism and sci-fi Digital artist, Jacque Njeri, supported by interior & set designer, Christine Adeka, present a visual art installation of Jacque’s art project ‘MaaSci’, a digital collage and photo manipulation series that explores the Maasai in Sci-Fi environments.

L’artiste numérique Jacque Njeri, soutenu par la designer Christine Adeka, présente son installation d’art visuel ‘MaaSci’, une série de collages numériques et de manipulation de photos qui explore les Massaï dans un environnement de science-fiction.

Jacque was inspired by scenes from Tatooine city, a fictional sparsely inhabited desert planet from the movie series ‘Star Wars’ and incorporates the Maasai to provide the rich cultural aesthetic through tech, science and fantasy themes.

Jacque recrée la ville de Tatooine, une planète déserte fictive de la série de films ‘’Star Wars’’ et incorpore les Massaï pour fournir cette riche esthétique culturelle à travers les thèmes de la technologie, de la science et de la fantaisie.

The Science Café will discuss social issues raised by the spread of digital technologies in the Global South, focusing especially upon East Africa, South Asia and their inter-regional links. Expert panelists will discuss and illustrate collectively the issue of digital change in an intercontinental perspective with a focus on two important sites of consumption as well as production of digital technologies: India and Kenya.

The panelists include Marine Al Dahdah, research scientist from CNRS, Monish Ketrymayum Singh, research scientist from Center for Internet and Society (India), Bitange Ndemo, research scientist from Nairobi University and Nanjala Nyabola, author of Digital Democracy, Analogue Politics (Zed Books, 2018).

Le Science Café abordera les questions sociales soulevées par la diffusion des technologies numériques dans les pays du Sud, en se concentrant particulièrement sur l’Afrique de l’Est, l’Asie du Sud et leurs liens interrégionaux. IBAAKU ALIEN CARTOON

After a successful European tour, the Senegalese multidisciplinary artist, Ibaaku, concludes his ‘Alien Cartoon’ tour with performances on the African continent. Ibaaku is a producer, radio host, multiinstrumentalist and creative connector, who regularly collaborates with artists from the world of fashion, visual and video arts.

Après une tournée européenne réussie, l’artiste multidisciplinaire sénégalais Ibaaku vient conclure sa tournée ‘Alien Cartoon’ avec des performances sur le continent africain. Ibaaku est un producteur, animateur radio, multi-instrumentiste et connecteur créatif, qui collabore régulièrement avec des artistes du monde de la mode, des arts visuels et vidéo.

‘Alien Cartoon’ is a kaleidoscopic concoction of hiphop and experimental electro music, blended with Senegalese sounds, creating a hell of an audio ride. Presented as a sound, light and video show, Ibaaku will take you into the Afro-futuristic universe of a new African age, assisted by the VJ, Benjamin Richard, and Kevin Aubin on lights.

Gravitti is one of Kenya’s premier live reggae units established in 2014. Gravitti has been influenced and inspired by different reggae legends, as illustrated in its punchline ‘to follow in the footsteps of the greatest’. The band comprises of Jack on keyboards, Ian’o and Ms. Okinda, vocalists and songwriters, Mathematix, drummer and band leader, and Charles Otieno, bass player. The band has recorded over 30 songs since its inception and performed in festivals across Europe, Africa, North America, China and Australia.

reflections

‘Reflections’ is an exhibition of 2 dimensional artworks, neat analog collages on stretched canvas, and 3 dimensional found object heads, inspired by the notorious Dandora dumpsite. It is a reflection of the landscape around the dumpsite that is at once an economic lifeline and a toxic environment for many inhabitants in the surrounding area.

‘Reflections’ est une exposition d’œuvres d’art en deux dimensions, de collages soignés sur toile tendue et d’objets trouvés, inspirés par la fameuse décharge de Dandora. C’est un reflet du paysage autour de la décharge qui est à la fois une bouée de sauvetage économique et un environnement toxique pour les nombreux habitants des environs.

Wallace Juma completed Art and Design studies at the Buruburu Institute of Fine Arts and has participated in several art shows in Kenya and in Europe. He has lived in the neighborhood of the Dandora dumpsite for many years and uses recycled material from the dumpsite to create his artworks that reflect back to the society the environmental and social injustices suffered by people.

Wallace Juma a terminé ses études d’art et de design à l’Institut des Beaux-Arts de Buruburu et a participé à plusieurs expositions d’art au Kenya et en Europe. Il vit dans le quartier de la décharge de Dandora depuis de nombreuses années et utilise des matériaux recyclés provenant de la décharge pour créer ses œuvres qui sont un reflet de la société et des injustices environnementales et sociales subies par la population.

BCUC Bantu Continua Uhuru Consciousness

Headlining this year’s World Music Day, BCUC is an energetic seven-piece band from South Africa whose music is rich in tradition. Drawing inspiration from indigenous music that is not exposed in the mainstream, the group comes complete with the voices of their ancestors, mixed with funk, punk-rock vibrations, hiphop and Fela-inflections... BCUC sees its music as a hedonistic trance, but also as a weapon of political and spiritual liberation. “Africangungungu” is the name they have given to their “afropsychedelic” music. Nguni rhythms mix with Tsonga rhythms, the whistles of Bhaca and Shona miners meet the traditional Imbomu horn, while ancestral war songs and Ngoma busuku (night song) choruses mingle with the soul music of singer Kgomotso and the raging rap of the vocalists, Jovi and Luja.

MUSIC AND DANCE IN EASTERN AFRICA Current research in humanities and social sciences

The French Institute for Research in Africa (IFRA Nairobi) and Twaweza Communications present their latest publication ‘Music and dance Research in East Africa’. It is a collection of articles, edited by Kahithe Kiiru and Maina wa Mutonya, that cut across the Eastern African region, with authors interrogating varying themes in different historical periods that speak not only to the practice of music and dance but also to the performances that characterize these practices. The book provides a template for discussing various socio-political and cultural issues including urban and gender identities, the colonial imagination, local politics and national identities, as well as the representation of music in literary works. The launch will feature live benga music.

The Alliance Française is a language and cultural relations organization. It was created in 1883 in Paris by renowned humanists, including Louis Pasteur and Jules Verne, with the principal objective of promoting and teaching the French language around the world.
