Kenya has been a popular location for film production with its abundant wildlife, scenic landscapes and cultural diversity. The first film shot in Africa, ‘Trader Horn’ (1931), was filmed entirely in Kenya and the country became the destination of choice for feature films shot in Africa, especially during the late 40s, 50s and 60s.
Le Kenya est un endroit populaire pour la production de films avec sa faune abondante, ses paysages pittoresques et sa diversité culturelle. Trader Horn (1931), le premier film de cinéma tourné en Afrique, a été entièrement tourné au Kenya. Movie stars including Clarke Gable, Ava Gardner, Frank Sinatra, Gregory Peck, Grace Kelly and Sean Connery have all been on location in Kenya for big budget Hollywood films.

He returns with his unique “Benga Flava” style which fuses Kenyan and other African music, as well as some international genres, into his native Benga Beats, giving it a fresh and broadly contemporary feel.

This Ciné-Concert traverses genre and time with the Spanish film ‘Chico y Rita’, directed by Tono Errando, Fernando Trueba and Javier Mariscal. The screening will be followed by live music with MacKinlay Mutsembi, whose sounds are influenced by his love for Afro-Cuban, Jazz and African music.
The Academy Award nominated animation, ‘Chico y Rita’, will take the audiences to the Havana of 1940s, bringing to life a rich and resonant moment in musical history. The film depicts the lifelong romance between two Havana musicians, Chico, a piano player and Rita, a vocalist. What better place to soak in the Afro-Cuban musical atmosphere than the Alliance Française garden terrace.

JAZZ ET VIN DE PALME
Cap Congo is a dance group from Brazzaville made up of 5 dancers who came together for a workshop conducted by the Dutch dancer/choreographer, Herman Diephuis, at the Institut Français de Congo.
Cap Congo est une compagnie composée de cinq danseurs qui se sont retrouvés pour un atelier de danse animé par le chorégraphe néerlandais, Herman Diephuis, à l’Institut Français du Congo.
The choreography is based on a collection of short stories by the Congolese writer, Emmanuel Dongala, entitled ‘Jazz and Palm Wine’. These young artists, who have lived through their country’s social and political turmoil, find solace through dance with their daily struggles evaporating on stage.
La chorégraphie est librement adaptée du recueil de l’écrivain congolais Emmanuel Dongala, ‘Jazz et vin de palme’. Ces jeunes artistes traversés par l’histoire de leur pays, ses crises, ses convulsions, luttent constamment pour continuer à exercer leur art salvateur. Sur scène, les difficultés de la vie quotidienne s’évaporent. C’est de cela dont parle ce spectacle pluridisciplinaire : du Congo, ses vices et ses rêves, de ces jeunes artistes qui, face aux dures réalités, se construisent une vie avec humour et dignité.
This interdisciplinary performance is about the Congo with all its vices as well as its aspirations, about the dancers who confront the harsh realities of life with humour and dignity.

L’HERMINE
For the 28th European Film Festival, France will be showing the award-winning film ‘L’Hermine’ (Courted) by Christian Vincent. The film stars Fabrice Luchini (Winner Best Actor at the 72nd Venice International Film Festival) and Sidse Babett Knudsen (Winner 2016 César for Best Supporting Actress).
In the criminal court of Saint-Omer, Michel Racine is the presiding judge, a feared yet fair man. He comes face to face with an old lover, a member of the jury, who will judge the case of a man accused of kicking his seven-month-year-old daughter to death. She maybe the only woman he has ever loved, but the judge and the juror are bound by their roles to discretion.

HISTORY OF CINEMA IN KENYA
To coincide with the 2019 European Film Festival and in addition to the poster exhibition on films shot in Kenya, this Ciné-Café will trace the history of cinema in Kenya.
The documentary, ‘History of Film in Kenya: 1909 – 2009’ produced by Twaweza Communications will be screened. Directed by Simiyu Barasa, the documentary uses re-enactments, archival footage and incisive interviews with industry players to chronicle the 100 years from the first film to be shot in colonial Kenya to our digital age. The screening will be followed by a discussion with Kenyan academics and film directors that will be moderated by Dr. Rachel Diang’a, Assistant Professor of Film and the Chair of Cinematic Arts Department at USIU.
Pour coïncider avec le Festival du film européen 2019 et en plus de l’exposition d’affiches, ce Ciné-Café abordera cent ans d’histoire du cinéma au Kenya. La projection du documentaire ‘Histoire du film au Kenya: 1909 - 2009’ réalisé par Simuyu Barasa et produit par Twaweza Communications, précédera les discussions. CHRISTINE KAMAU Christine Kamau is a Kenyan trumpeter, composer, band leader and performing artist. Her music is a fusion of Benga, Rumba, Chakacha with jazz influences and improvisation. Christine credits her musical influences to Hugh Masekela, Maroon Commandos, Miles Davis among others. In 2012, Çhristine Kamau released an 8-track instrumental afro-jazz album titled ‘This is for You’. a live recording of instrumental Afro-jazz compositions produced by Cameroon’s Romeo K. Classically trained Christine has been studying music since the age of 11. A keen collaborator and campaigner for music as a tool for propagating unity, Chrisine has participated in various Festivals across Africa.

TRASH TO TREASURE
We mark the 2019 World Environment Day with the Warembo Wasanii Art Studio. This community based organization, situated in Kariobangi North, was founded by the artist Joan Otieno. Joan, whose art is influenced by her surroundings, and incorporates found objects, mentors a younger generation of women artists, teaching them the art of recycling and promoting environmental awareness.
Cette année, nous célébrons la Journée Mondiale de l’Environnement 2019 avec le Warembo Wasanii Art Studio. Cette organisation communautaire, située à Kariobangi North, a été fondée par l’artiste Joan Otieno. Joan, dont l’art est influencé par son environnement en intégrant les objets trouvés, encadre une jeune génération d’artistes femmes et leur enseigne l’art du recyclage, la sensibilisation à l’environnement.
These young women collect waste materials from garbage dumps and upcycle them to fashionable dresses and accessories as well as functional and ornamental art.
Ces jeunes femmes ramassent les déchets dans les décharges et les recyclent pour en faire des robes et des accessoires à la mode, ainsi que des œuvres d’art décoratives et fonctionnelles.

DAGOZ GANG The Dagoz Gang is an amalgamation of Nairobi based musicians that come together through jam sessions at the Dagoz Bar – Artists venue. The group comprises of the founder members Dave Otieno (guitar, bass & vox), Stevo Kiwinda (vox & percussions), Charlie Muthemba (guitar, bass & vox),and Fariji Napa (guitar, bass & vox). They are joined from time to time by the Senegalese Drummer /Percussionist, Thierry De Oliveira and other accomplished musicians. This combination enables a colourful versatility of expressions with interchanging instruments, musical languages and genres. Their nfluences range from RnB and soul to Benga, Lingala, Jazz, Blues, Rock and Reggae. Expect the unexpected with the Dagoz Gang.

GATO PRETO The 2019 Fête de la Musique (World Music Day) will be headlined by the afrofuturistic live act Gato Preto (“Black Cat” in Portuguese). Gato Preto is made up of the Femcee Gata Misteriosa who grew up in Lisbon with roots in Mozambique, the DJ/Producer Lee Bass, rooted in Ghana and Germany, accompanied by the Senegalese djembé master, Moussa Diallo. Gato Preto promise a carnival atmosphere with their high energy live performances combining electronic beats with powerful live percussions – a mix of world music with todays club attitude.

Simply Blacque band led by the singer DyaLi Ogoti with a blend of Afrocentric influences from East, West and South Africa, MamaKaffe, French/Ivorian singer mixing Jamaican dancehall and hip hop, the Bomas of Kenya musicians and dancers, and DJ Coco em, Labdi, & Ndululu, in a special performance blending afro-electronic music with live instruments.

JEAN-DAVID NKOT
Cameroonian artist, Jean-David Nkot, is a graduate of the Institute of Fine Arts of Foumban in Western Cameroon. A multi-media artist, he has won prizes for his sculptures, paintings and installations.
ABDUL KIPRUTO
Abdul Kipruto is a member of the Brush Tu Art Studio in Nairobi. He ventured into practicing art after graduating with a BA in Sociology and Religion.
His art examines the human condition. The place of violence and its normality in our age where capital matters more than social issues. The subject of immigration, of bodies and territories. He strives to raise awareness on dehumanizing practices, encouraging people to break free of them.
Abdul will be showing his series of woodcut prints, ‘Things between us’, that are inspired by the movement of people and its effects on society. It explores the fortunes, but more often the misfortunes of migrant workers be it from one country to another or from the village to the city, where individuals become just another statistic.
The Alliance Française de Nairobi has invited JeanDavid Nkot for this dual exhibition featuring a Francophone and an Anglophone artist. Jean-David will also be working with Kenyan artists at the Dust Depot.
The two artists, using different techniques, converge on one of the preoccupying phenomena of this century, referred to by many as the ‘century of migration’.

WALTER KOGA Walter Koga has been playing the Nyatiti since the age of 15, influenced by his grandfather, a renowned nyatiti player. He also plays the saxophone. He is one of the Spotlight on Kenyan Music finalists from 2007 and his song ‘Min Afrika’ features on Vol. 3 of the Spotlight on Kenyan Music compilations.
