SITI & THE BAND The International Women’s Day activities continue with a performance by the Zanzibari music group ‘Siti & the Band’ led by vocalist and oud player, Siti Amina Omar. Amina overcame family and societal pressures to study traditional taarab music at the Dhow Countries Music Academy. Together with her cousin Rahma Ameir (violinist) and Gora Mohammed (qanun player), she founded ‘Siti & the Band’, following in the footsteps of legendary female musicians from Zanzibar: Siti Bint Saad and Bi Kidude The trio’s music is a swinging mix of traditional Zanzibari rhythms with contemporary musical styles.
Les activités de la Journée Internationale de la Femme se poursuivront avec une performance du groupe de musique de Zanzibar ‘Siti & the Band’ dirigé par la chanteuse et joueuse d’oud, Siti Amina Omar. Amina a surmonté les pressions de la famille et de la société pour étudier la musique traditionnelle du taarab à l’Académie de musique de Dhow Countries. Avec sa cousine Rahma Ameir (violoniste) et Gora Mohammed (joueuse de qanun), elle a fondé ‘Siti & the Band’, sur les traces des musiciennes légendaires de Zanzibar: Siti Bint Saad et Bi Kidude. La musique du trio est un mélange de rythmes Zanzibaris traditionnels et de styles musicaux contemporains.

MYSTERIOUS CETACEAN ‘Mysterious Cetacean’ is an interactive exhibition that will take you on a journey into the fascinating world of the little known humpback whales of the Southern Indian Ocean.
‘Cétacé mystérieux’ est une exposition interactive, destinée à tous les publics, qui offre un voyage à travers l’univers peu connu de la baleine à bosse dans le sud de l’océan indien.
The exhibition will reveal interesting secrets about these spectacular sea mammals: history, anatomy, migration, feeding habits, legends... It aims to raise awareness on this migratory species that knows no borders and is a symbol of the health of our oceans.
L’exposition lève le voile sur de nombreux secrets de la baleine: .histoire, anatomie, migration, alimentation, légendes… Elle vise à valoriser une espèce migratrice qui ne connaît pas les frontières et qui est symbole de la santé des océans.
The exhibition has been produced by the ‘Biodiversity’ programme of the Indian Ocean Commission.

On the occasion of the Francophone Fortnight festivities, the Embassy of Switzerland in Kenya will be presenting the Swiss singer, Marc Aymon with his new CD songbook project ‘Ô bel été! Chansons éternelles’.
In this original, intergenerational and popular project, Marc offers 14 timeless Swiss songs from the years before 1930 that he has reworked and recorded in a contemporary and respectful style. Accompanied by his guitarist Frédéric Jaillard, Marc will treat the public to some of the treasures of Swiss heritage.
Dans le cadre de la quinzaine de la francophonie, l’Ambassade de Suisse au Kenya présentera le chanteur suisse Marc Aymon avec son nouveau projet livre-CD, carnet de chant: ‘Ô bel été ! Chansons éternelles’. Marc Aymon est un chanteur passionné de rencontres, de voyages et d’art. Dans ce projet original, intergénérationnel et populaire, Marc propose 14 chansons éternelles suisse d’avant 1930 qu’il a retravaillées dans un habillage à la fois contemporain et respectueux. Accompagné de son guitariste, Frédéric Jaillard, Marc nous fera découvrir les trésors du patrimoine suisse.

MICHEL FOUCAULT, AUJOURD’HUI? Presented by Hervé Nicolle - a graduate of the ‘Ecole Normale Supérieur’ - these philosophy workshops, open to all, will examine our world today by presenting some key readings from the French philosopher, Michel Foucault’s book, ‘Surveiller et Punir’ (Discipline and Punish, 1975). They will question the knowledge and power configurations that exist in our modern society.
Animé par Hervé Nicolle, ancien élève de l’Ecole Normale Supérieure, les ateliers de philosophie, ouverts à tous, interrogeront l’actualité en présentant quelques clés de lecture de l’oeuvre de Foucault (philosophe français, 1926-1984),‘Surveiller et Punir’, puis en questionnant les configurations de savoir/ pouvoir propres aux sociétés modernes.
The philosopher’s analysis remains very pertinent today, at a time when Big Data has progressively replaced Big Brother in our fantasies and in our reality - making us consenting agents of our own surveillance, being generally watched and controlled.

QUINZAINE DE LA Francophonie
The French Language and Francophone Week continues to be celebrated globally every year around 20th March. It is an occasion that unites about 275 million French speaking people around the world, bringing together a diversity of cultures that continue to enrich the French language.
Comme chaque année autour du 20 mars, le monde entier célèbre la fête de la francophonie. Cette manifestation planétaire rassemble 275 millions de francophones. Célébration où chacun apporte sa diversité culturelle qui contribue à enrichir la langue française, une langue en partage.
Kenyan schools will once again be invited to participate in an out-of-class learning experience in French, from 13 to 15 March.
Des écoles kenyanes seront encore une fois invitées à participer à des ateliers d’activités autour de la francophonie du 13 au 15 mars.
A West African dance class will be offered by Kahithe Kiiru on Sat. 24 March from 4 to 6pm.
Un cours de danse d’Afrique de l’Ouest sera offert par Kahithe Kiiru le jeudi 16 mars.

ENDANGERED SPECIES: finding the right bALAnce
To coincide with the exhibition ‘Mysterious Cetacean’, a ciné-conference will take place on the general subject of ‘Endangered Species: Finding the Right Balance’. The documentary ‘Vanishing Vultures’, produced with the support of the Aga Khan Graduate School of Media and Communication, for its ‘Giving Nature a Voice’ project will be screened on this occasion.
Pour coïncider avec l’exposition ‘Cétacé mystérieux’, une conférence-ciné aura lieu sur le thème général ‘Espèces en danger : trouver le bon équilibre’. Le documentaire ‘Vanishing Vultures’, réalisé avec le soutien de l’Aga Khan Graduate School of Media and Communication pour son projet ‘Donner une voix à la nature’, sera projeté à cette occasion.
Expert panelists drawn from both the conservation and media fields will discuss efforts being undertaken to find that elusive balance, which results in win-win solutions for people, wildlife and ecosystems in an effort to preserve the planet’s biodiversity.

French cuisine was declared a “world intangible heritage’ by UNESCO in 2010. The UNESCO experts singled out France’s multi-course gastronomic meal, with its rites and its presentation as a “social custom aimed at celebrating the most important moments in the lives of individuals and groups”.
In 2015, the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs initiated the event Gôut de France’ (Good France) that takes place annually in March and bring together over 3000 restaurants around the world to share and connect around French cuisine. La Belle Epoque restaurant at the Alliance Française will be offering culinary delights from South West France, a region producing not only some of the world’s best wine but also gourmet delicacies.
La gastronomie française est l’un des piliers de l’attractivité de la France et participe activement à son rayonnement culturel. En 2010, l’UNESCO a inscrit le ‘repas gastronomique Français’ sur la liste représentative du patrimoine culutrel immatériel de l’humanité afin de reconnaître cette pratique sociale coutumière destinée à célébrer les moments les plus importants de la vie.
Depuis 2015, l’événement annuel Goût de France mobilise plus de 3000 restaurants du monde entier pour proposer des menus ‘à la française’. Le restaurant ‘La Belle Epoque’ à l’Alliance Française offrira des spécialités du sud-ouest de la France, une région connue non seulment pour ses vins, mais aussi pour sa cuisine riche et chaleureuse.

MOSES NYAWANDA Moses holds a Diploma in Fine Arts from the Creative Art Centre. His medium of choice is oil and he has developed a style of painting where he uses a palette knife to produce layers and layers of paint so the work ends up looking like it was done with pastels. The storylines in his semi-figurative paintings are informed by current events or personal experiences, investigating sexuality, generational divides, divergent opinions, politics, corruption, love and fear. Moses has held multiple exhibitions in Kenya and the East Africa region, in addition to winning several art prizes.

Moses est diplômé des beaux-arts du Creative Arts Centre. Son outil de prédilection est l’huile et il a développé un style de peinture où il utilise un couteau à palette pour produire des couches et des couches de peinture afin que l’œuvre finisse par ressembler à du pastel. Les scénarios de ses peintures semi-figuratives sont tirés d’événements actuels ou d’expériences personnelles, et touchent à la sexualité, aux divisions générationnelles, aux opinions divergentes, à la politique, la corruption, l’amour et la peur. Moses a organisé plusieurs expositions au Kenya et en Afrique de l’Est, en plus d’avoir gagné plusieurs prix artistiques.

Intellectual Property (IP) - creations of the mind: inventions; literary and artistic works; and symbols, names and images used in commerce - could either be industrial property or copyright. Kenya is signatory to a number of intellectual property conventions. However IP awareness and protection remains a challenge. This Science Café will shed light on IP rights and create networking opportunities for researchers and entrepreneurs in order to enhance knowledge transfer and development.

CONTES CHINOIS Cheng Jiang Hong is a Chinese painter and illustrator, based in Paris, who completed his postgraduate education at the prestigious China Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. His works have been exhibited worldwide. For some of his illustrations, he uses the traditional technique of Chinese ink on rice paper, resulting in splendid albums in subtle shades that are an invitation to journey or simply daydream. He has also illustrated traditional stories from different countries and published several children’s books,, notably ‘Mao et Moi’ (2008) in which he describes his youth in China during the cultural revolution with much solemnity and emotion.

Peintre et illustrateur d’origine chinoise, Chen Jiang Hong a été formé aux Beaux-Arts de Pékin. Il vit et travaille à Paris depuis 1987. Son œuvre est exposée en France et à l’étranger. Pour certaines de ses illustrations, il utilise une technique traditionnelle à l’encre de Chine, sur papier de riz. Il en résulte de somptueux albums d’un grand raffinement, aux teintes subtiles, une véritable invitation au voyage ou à la rêverie, tout simplement. Il a illustré plusieurs recueils de contes traditionnels de différents pays et publiés de nombreux albums pour la jeunesse, notamment «Mao et Moi» (2008) dans lequel il évoque, avec beaucoup de sobriété et d’émotion, sa jeunesse en Chine, durant la révolution culturelle.

Showcase WEDNESDAY L’initiative ‘Showcase Wednesday’ offre un cadre intime de diffusion aux chanteurs et musiciens. Cette plateforme a pour l’objectif de permettre aux artistes d’improviser et d’expérimenter et de développer des performances scéniques.
Lulu Singer Said Abdalla alias Lulu is a professional percussionist, rhythmic guitarist and lead singer. Born in Mombasa, Lulu’s interest in music was sparked by the sounds of East African taarab orchestras and chakacha bands as his mother performed with one of Mombasa’s leading taarab band. Lulu’s music is a diverse fusion of different African and Caribbean musical styles. Lulu performed as an actor/singer in the popular Kenyan musical ‘Luanda Magere’. He has performed in Canada, Norway, Switzerland, Taiwan and Malawi and spent a whole year performing in China in 2015.

The Alliance Française is a language and cultural relations organization. It was created in 1883 in Paris by renowned humanists, including Louis Pasteur and Jules Verne, with the principal objective of promoting and teaching the French language around the world. Since then, it has developed into a global network of the Alliance Française institutions operating in 135 countries around the world, with the common aim of fostering friendship between peoples, through the promotion of the French language and cultural diversity. The Alliance Française de Nairobi was founded in 1949. It has grown into one of the largest in Africa offering French language courses to thousands of students annually. It is the only accredited institution in Kenya for international and professional French language certification. It is also the only officially recognized institution in Kenya for certified translations. The institution offers a rich programme of annual activities showcasing local and international Arts and encouraging creativity. It supports the production and presentation of artistic works, across all disciplines, that reflect the diversity, aspirations and contradictions of our contemporary society and open up space for dialogue.
