Comment écrit-on sur l’Afrique aujourd’hui quand on est un jeune écrivain français de la génération postcoloniale?
ELECTRONIC MUSIC
BLINKY BILL & DOUCHKA They first met at the Red Bull Music Academy in Tokyo in 2014, a platform that celebrates music and the transformative minds behind it. Blinky Bill from Kenya whose music is a mix of electronic music, futuristic African beats, funk and hip hop, and Douchka from France, who experiments with diverse musical traditions.
Both are adventurous in their music and have become points of reference on the electronic music scene in their countries. Both are represented by French labels; Douchka by Nowadays Records and Blinky Bill by Lusafrica Productions. The two have got together again 5 years later, working away independently in Blinky Bill’s studio in Nairobi. Get ready for a live DJ set under the Kenyan skies with these two remarkable artists who are pushing the boundaries of electronic music.
Ils se sont rencontrés pour la première fois à la Red Bull music Academy de Tokyo en 2014, une plate-forme qui célèbre la musique et les musiciens à l’esprit novateur. Blinky Bill est un DJ originaire du Kenya, sa musique électronique qui s’exporte à l’international est le fruit d’un mélange de rythmes africains, de funk et de hip hop. Douchka est un dj français créatif à souhait qui mixe à la fois de la pop, du hip hop, du rock comme de la musique classique, l’ancien étudiant de l’école des beaux-arts de Rennes est une valeur montante de la scène électro française. Aventureux et créatifs ces deux dj’s sont devenus des références de la scène électronique, tous deux signés sur des labels français, ils se retrouvent pour la première fois à Nairobi pour vous offrir sur la grande scène de l’AF un dj set endiablé qui promet d’être savoureux.

Les ateliers philos avec Hervé Nicolle, ancien élève de l’école normale supérieure, sont ouverts à tous, sans formation philosophique préalablement requise. Des extraits des Essais, des comparaisons avec d’autres œuvres philosophiques, littéraires ou poétiques, mais aussi des projections d’œuvres picturales ou cinématographiques, nourriront la discussion entre les participants.
Pour trancher ces questions, discuter des contradictions, nous nous confronterons - ensemble - aux difficultés apparentes du texte des Essais dans l’intimité de la Médiathèque.

BEATING HEART PRESENTS SARONDE FT. LABDI & IDD AZIZ The Beating Heart label is at the forefront of African-electronic sounds, revising forgotten folk recordings for the global dancefloor with the help of some of the world’s most innovative electronic artists. Since launching in spring 2016, on the shores of Lake Malawi, Beating Heart has released over 60 tracks splicing Afro flavours with house, techno, soulful beats and bass music. The label founders, Ollie Wood and Chris Pedley’s hugely hyped DJ sets have also been smashing dancefloors across the globe, from Rocking the Daisies in South Africa to the Kilifi New Year’s Festival in Kenya, from WOMAD and Glastonbury in the UK to South by Southwest in the US.

THE FOURTH WIFE
The month of March marks two international days: La Journée de la Francophonie and International Women’s Day. This year, we present Francophone women creatives and celebrate their achievements in a joint exhibition/installation.
Maliza Kiasuwa is a visual artist of European/African ancestry. In her wall hangings installation, Maliza pays tribute to Mother Nature and womanhood; to the shared cycle of life and death, using natural objects like the loofah, wool and porcupine quills. The woman is the source and the centre of these powers. Once again, Maliza philosophically transforms natural objects into contemporary artworks.

Cette année pour la journée internationale de la Francophonie et la Journée internationale de la femme, l’AFN mettra à l’honneur des créatrices francophones. Maliza Kiasuwa est une artiste d’origine européenne et africaine. Dans ces oeuvres, Maliza rend hommage à la Nature et à la féminité; au cycle de la vie à la mort, en utilisant des objets naturels comme la loufha, la laine, le rafia et les défenses de porc épic. La femme est la source et le centre de ces pouvoirs. Encore une fois, Maliza recrée l’objet en le transformant de manière philosophique en œuvre d’art contemporain.

L’EQUIPÉE
L’Équipée is a Nairobi-based studio founded by Lilo Chaumont together with her daughter Gus. In close collaboration with 19 Kenyan artisans, they produce furniture for both the African and European markets.
L’Équipée tries to find a balance between the calibrated, rigorous European design, and the bold ingenuity of the local craftsmen. Each piece is the result of dialogue between the artisans and the designers, each design is one of a kind.
Fondé par Lilo Chaumont et sa fille Justine en 2015, L’Équipée est un studio de design basé à Nairobi. Le studio dessine une gamme de mobilier inédit, produite en étroite collaboration avec 19 artisans Kenyans, exposée et vendue de part et d’autre de l’Équateur. Loin des plans techniques et des 3D, chaque pièce du studio est le fruit de dialogues entre les artisans et les designers. Le résultat: des pièces légères et vivantes, éloignés des clichés folkloriques, qui valorisent la spontanéité et l’ingéniosité des artisans Kenyans.

Two acclaimed African musicians, Alhousseini Anivolla-Anewal, Tuareg guitarist and singer from Niger, and the Ethiopian jazz guitarist, Girum Mezmur, use the language of music to bridge cultures.
Deux musiciens africains renommés, Alhousseini Anivolla-Anewal, guitariste touareg et chanteur du Niger, et Girum Mezmur, guitariste de jazz éthiopien, utilisent le langage de la musique pour créer un pont entre les cultures.
Inspired by the pentatonic scale, the two musicians will be joined by traditional Ethiopian instrumentalists playing the masinko and the krar, in a meeting of Sahara blues and Ethiopian jazz.

IMARHAN
Imarhan is a five-piece Algerian Tuareg desert rock band from Tamanrasset, a Tuareg/Berber oasis city in southern Algeria, in the Ahaggar Mountains, close to the borders of Mali and Niger.
Imarhan est un groupe de rock touareg algérien, originaire de Tamanrasset, une ville oasis touareg / berbère située dans le sud de l’Algérie, près des frontières du Mali et du Niger.
Imarhan means ‘the ones I care about’ in the Tamashek language. Imarhan’s sound is a symbiosis of the ancient and the modern: dry guitar riffs, pop melodies and panafrican rhythms which draw upon traditional Tuareg music, African ballads and modern pop and rock.
Imarhan signifie «ceux qui me tiennent à cœur» en langue tamashek. Le son d’Imarhan est une symbiose de l’ancien et du moderne: riffs de guitares sèches, mélodies pop et rythmes panafricains inspirés de la musique traditionnelle touareg, ballades africaines pop et rock moderne.
These Nomadic travelers have performed widely in Europe, the US and China and this will be their first concert in East Africa.
Ces voyageurs nomades ont beaucoup joué en Europe, aux États-Unis et en Chine et ce sera leur premier concert en Afrique de l’Est.

LES GRANDS
Pour ce mois de la francophonie, nous invitons l’écrivain Sylvain Prudhomme, auteur de plusieurs romans publiés dans la prestigieuse maison d’édition française, Gallimard. Sylvain Prudhomme a également traduit l’essai ‘Décoloniser l’esprit’ de l’écrivain kenyan Ngugi wa Thiong’o. ‘Les Grands’ est son roman publié en 2014 qui se déroule à Bissau, capitale du petit état lusophone d’Afrique de l’ouest la Guiné-Bissau. Dans son roman, l’auteur rend hommage au peuple bissauguinéen en célébrant sa grande chanteuse Dulce Neves et les musiciens du Super Mama Djombo, groupe emblématique des compagnons d’Almicar Cabral, l’opposant à la domination coloniale portugaise.

For the month of the French language and La Francophonie, we have invited the French writer, Sylvain Prudhomme, author of several novels published by Gallimard, a leading publishing house. Sylvain has also translated into French the collection of essays ‘Decolonizing the Mind’ by Ngugi wa Thiong’o.

Comment assumer une parole sur l’Afrique et ses habitants, tout en étant particulièrement conscient du lourd héritage qui est le sien, en tant qu’écrivain français ‘racontant l’Afrique’?

KAWANGWARE DEFENCE FORCE
This is another ART+ installation by Osborne Macharia and Kevo Abbra featuring 4 boys from the Kawangware Defence Force. School kids by day, neighbourhood watch police by night, the 4 boys masquerade as members of their school’s home-science club. The boys designed and built their own all-in-one surveillance and communication head units using old Boda Boda (motorcycle taxi) helmets and salvaged electronic parts capable of sending untraceable calls to the area Police.
During school nights, the boys take turns patrolling the dimly lit neighbourhoods and alerting Police of imminent danger. Their real identity is still unknown. Little is known about them till now....
Nouvelle installation ART +, une installation artistique multidisciplinaire signée des artistes kenyans de renommée internationale: Osborne Macharia et Kevo Abbra, avec 4 garçons de la Force de Défense de Kawangware. Écoliers le jour, policiers de quartier la nuit, les 4 garçons se font passer pour des membres du club de science de leur école… Les garçons ont conçu et construit leur propre système de surveillance et de communication en utilisant de vieux casques de Boda Boda et du recyclage de composants électroniques. La nuit, les garçons patrouillent à tour de rôle dans les quartiers mal éclairés et alertent la police des dangers imminents. Leur véritable identité est encore inconnue…

Kristel, a young pop rock band from Madagascar is fast becoming the voice of a young generation ready for change and opportunity. Kristel is a family affair: led by the electrying female singer and bass player Christelle Ratri, her brother Ben Kheli on guitar and her husband Andry Sylvano on drums.
Ils sont jeunes, ils ont de l’énergie à revendre et ils arborent un style hybride qui mélange la tradition malgache à des sonorités afro, pop et rock : Kristel est un trio né en 2013 à Madagascar sous l’impulsion de l’auteure-compositrice, bassiste et chanteuse à la voix poignante, Christelle Ratri alias Kristel.
Singing in Malagasy, the trio released their first EP ‘TNM’ in January 2018 and their first album ‘Irony’ in August 2018, which won the recognition of RFI Talent, which supports and promotes talented musicians from all horizons.

Filmmaker and human rights lawyer Shameela Seedat tracks Thuli Madonsela, South Africa’s first female Public Protector, as she builds her second case against the country’s President, Jacob Zuma. Against allegations of spying, humiliation in parliament and death threats, Madonsela has already forced Zuma to return public money unlawfully spent on the construction of his private home. Now, in her final year in office, she attempts to prove that the President is allowing his son’s business partners, to systematically take over government for massive financial gain.
