For the first time, this film pieces together and properly considers her life and contribution to the struggle to bring down Apartheid from the inside, with intimate insight from those who were closest to her and with testimony from the enemies who sought to extinguish her radical capacity to shake up the order of things. ‘SUR LES CHEMINS DE LA RUMBA’ by David-Pierre Fila 30 July | 2015 | Documentary | 1h38 The documentary retraces the different influences that have given the rumba music and dance genre its spirit and soul. From the African coast and the Congo Basin to Cuba and Ecuador and back to Côte d’Ivoire, the musical journey is soaked in familiar notes.

INTERNATIONAL BALLET GALA
Seven professional ballet dancers from Europe and South America join hands to support the ‘Ballet in Kibera’ programme being run by the arts charities, Anno’s Africa and One Fine Day.
Led by Nick Jones and Julia Bergua, from the renowned Ballet de l’Opéra National du Rhin, the dancers will perform a series of pieces from some of the popular ballets of all times. The charities provide arts workshops to hundreds of children from disadvantaged communities. Apart from ballet, the children can choose music, drama, creative writing and film.

A series of photographs by the Swedish and Ugandan photographers, Fredrik Lerneryd and Sarah Waiswa, in support of the Ballet in Kibera programme.
Fredrik is committed to documenting sections of societies and communities in ways that afford them more respect. His picture stories have been published in leading international media. His Slum Ballet photographs are currently being shown at the Royal Abbey of Epau in Le Mans, France, as part of the sixth photographic season under the theme ‘Citizenship and Living Together’. Sarah Waiswa is a documentary and portrait photographer. She won the 2016 Rencontres Photographiques d’Arles Discovery Award for a series exploring albino persecution in sub-Saharan Africa. Through her photography, Sarah explores a new African identity, creating visual poetry that will help change the narrative on Africa.
Les photographes suédois et ougandais, Fredrik Lerneryd et Sarah Waiswa, présentent une série de photographies en soutien au programme ‘Ballet à Kibera. ‘ Fredrik s’engage à documenter des sections de sociétés de manière à leur donner plus de respect. Ses images ont été publiées dans les principaux médias internationaux. Ses photographies de Slum Ballet sont actuellement présentées à l’Abbaye Royale d’Epau en France, dans le cadre de la sixième saison photographique. Sarah Waiswa a remporté le Prix Découverte des Rencontres photographiques d’Arles 2016 pour une série consacrée à la persécution des albinos en Afrique subsaharienne. A travers ses photographies, Sarah explore une nouvelle identité africaine et contribue au développement d’un nouveau récit sur l’Afrique.

Ces deux derniers Ateliers de Philosophie dans l’oeuvre de Michel Foucault seront consacrés à la question de l’aveu et de la vérité.
Peu avant sa mort, Michel Foucault avait expressément indiqué qu’il ne souhaitait ‘pas de posthumes’. Depuis sa mort, près d’une vingtaine d’ouvrages ont été publiés. Cette extraordinaire productivité trouve un aboutissement avec les Aveux de la Chair, dernier tome de l’Histoire de la Sexualité, paru en mars 2018. L’enjeu principal de l’ouvrage est de montrer comment - paradoxalement - le pouvoir ne vise pas à réprimer nos désirs ou à faire de notre sexualité un secret honteux, mais à les faire parler. Les échos de ce texte visionnaire se retrouve dans les débats d’aujourd’hui entre militants du #metoo et partisans de la ‘liberté d’importuner’.

L’atelier du 18 juillet sera consacré à une forme de direvrai où se nouent subjectivité et pouvoir, celle de la parrhèsia : le courage de la vérité. Comme évoqué dans le premier Atelier autour de l’oeuvre de Michel Foucault, le parrhèsiaste est ‘celui qui prend le risque de dire la vérité’ face au détenteur du pouvoir, qui pourrait fort bien ne pas aimer l’entendre, et qui dans l’acte du direvrai risque donc sa propre personne tout en menaçant l’équilibre de l’ordre social. Foucault résume l’urgence, la nécessité et la beauté d’un tel courage: ‘Le dire-vrai du parrhèsiaste prend les risques de l’hostilité, de la guerre, de la haine et de la mort. Et s’il est vrai que [sa] vérité – quand elle est reçue […] – peut à ce moment-là unir et réconcilier, ce n’est qu’après avoir ouvert un moment essentiel, fondamental, structurellement nécessaire : la possibilité de la haine et du déchirement.’

IBAAKU
KOMBO & the afrosimba band AFRO SIMBA was founded by Kombo Chokwe, guitarist and singer/songwriter, and a group of coastal instrumentalists with the idea of exploring modern Mijikenda Music, Mijikenda chants, Swahili melodies and Bantu rhythms. The group has developed a sound it calls Mijikenda Fusion. Kombo has also performed and toured regularly with popular Kenyan artists including Sauti Sol, Eric Wainaina, Makadem, Suzanna Owiyo.... AfroSimba was one of the Kenyan groups invited to the prestigious Smithsonian Folk Festival in Washington in 2014. In 2016, the band released its debut album ‘Pandizo’, a Mijikenda word refering to people climbing up coconut trees to harvest coconuts, a metaphor to describe the band’s struggle against all odds to reach its peak.

SLUM FILM FESTIVAL 2018 A selection of 2018 Kenyan entries 27 August | 1h40 The Slum Film Festival is an independent organization that aims to promote and share slum stories from across the world made by and about slum communities through the annual Slum Film Festival. The screening will include three shorts: ‘Msista’ by Jospeh Mathenge (a drama on radicalisation), ‘Mimi Nani’ by Shery Abraham (a docu-film about a woman who can’t explain who she is) and ‘Not Now’ by Sammy Wanjala (a documentary on contraception). and the feature film ‘Trail of Misery’ by Gitonga Mwangi which follows the trials of a young woman torn between avenging her brother’s death or upholding her religion by keeping peace.

AFRO-RENAISSANCE
Afro-Renaissance is an Art movement started by a collective of Nairobi based artists. It aims to spark a new fire in the youth through the Arts by exploring African spirituality, astronomy, geometry, afro-futurism, metaphysics and self-awareness. Two of the artists, Marvin Macharia aka Native, and Steven Ogallo aka Sogalla, will be exhibiting poems and artworks from their recently penned book entitled ‘AfroRennaissance Vol. 1’. The book will be launched on Friday, 10th August. The artworks are a journey into the artists’ own minds reflecting their personal interpretation of the evolution of African art and narrative.

LEO MKANYiA Leo and the Swahili Blues band bridge the gap between old and new. Their songs tell stories of history and culture, politics, migration, inequality and love. They are throwbacks to the 70s and 80s with classic Tanzanian ‘zilipendwa dansi’ sounds mixed with contemporary twist, blues and afrobeat. All are original representations of Tanzanian traditional blues, a genre which Leo is adamant to preserve. Leo, who learnt his craft from his father, an AfroJazz guitarist, is fortunate to have his father in the band too as guitarist and background vocalist.

The Alliance Française is a language and cultural relations organization. It was created in 1883 in Paris by renowned humanists, including Louis Pasteur and Jules Verne, with the principal objective of promoting and teaching the French language around the world.
