Showcase Wednesday
Showcase Wednesday provides a small intimate setting for singers, musicians, music and poetry collaborations to get exposure and build audiences. Daraja Band performs music that fuses the sounds of Africa with that of others parts of the world. The group’s music provides a bridge to connect with people from all backgrounds. Many colors, one sound. The band comprises of Kirit Pattni on the Indian flute, Rapasa Otieno on Nyatiti and Adung’, Steve Kimani on guitar, Prasad Velankar on the tablas, Kamaich Kamau on percussion.
DARAJA
Vocalists include Señor Cjays who brings a blend of Swahili, English and Spanish rap, Daniel Osanya who carries a Jazz sound and Fezile Mauncho who ties it in with rhythm and sounds from Southern Africa.

EAST AFRICA ART BIENNALE The East Africa Art Biennale association (EASTAFAB) was founded in 2003 with the aim of promoting visual arts in East Africa. Based in Tanzania, the association has been organizing East Africa Art Biennales in Dar es Salaam. This is the first time that artworks from the 8th edition of the Biennale, that was launched in November 2017 in Dar es Salaam, will travel in the East African region, under the Moving Art Across East African Borders project. After Nairobi, the Art Safari will continue to Kampala, Kigali and Bujumbura.

L’association EASTAFAB (East Africa Art Biennale) a été fondée en 2003 dans le but de promouvoir les arts visuels en Afrique de l’Est. Basée en Tanzanie, l’association organise les Biennales d’Art d’Afrique de l’Est à Dar es Salaam. C’est la première fois que des œuvres de la 8e édition de la Biennale voyageront en Afrique de l’Est en commençant par des expositions au Kenya et en progressant vers l’Ouganda, le Rwanda et le Burundi.
IDEAS MATTER
POWER OF IMAGINATION The ‘Night of Ideas’ is an initiative of the Institut Français, the French Agency for international cultural cooperation. It is marked every year in January to celebrate and share ideas across cultures, generations and fields. For this year’s event, the Alliance Française has invited the Godown Arts Centre, the FlipFlopi project, Black Rhino VR, Digital Matatus and the Bus to share with the public how their power of imagination has fuelled an innovation revolution. Covering projects in the fields of architecture/design/ creativity, environment/oceans, virtual reality and information/mobile technology, this will be a night of new futures.
La ‘Nuit des Idées’ est une initiative de l’Institut Français. Elle se déroule chaque année en janvier pour célébrer et partager des idées à travers les cultures, les générations et les disciplines. SIMBIN PROJECT Simbin Project is an initiative of the Swiss multiinstrumentalist and producer Fred Hirschy. This one and only concert in Nairobi follows on from the group’s performance at the Sauti za Busara Festival in Zanzibar. The strength of the Simbin project consists in bringing together the kora virtuoso, Noumoucounda, with experimental musicians, creating a unique mix between traditional music and ultra-modernity. Musicians: Noumoucunda (kora, lead vocals), Fred Hirschy (bass), Axel Lussiez (drums, sampler), Jean Ferrarini (sample, keyboards), Antoine Favennec (tenor sav), Zacharie Ksyk (trumpet).

Le projet Simbin est une initiative du multiinstrumentiste et producteur suisse Fred Hirschy. Ce concert unique à Nairobi fait suite à la performance du groupe au Festival Sauti za Busara à Zanzibar. La force du projet Simbin consiste à réunir le virtuose de la kora, Noumoucounda, avec des musiciens expérimentaux, créant un mélange unique entre musique traditionnelle et ultra-modernité. BENGATRONICS
BENGATRONICS ft wakuu Benga is undoubtedly Kenyan’s original dance music. Bengatronics, coined by sound producer/ DJ Gregg Tendwa, can be a sound, a vibe or a movement. It is essentially a cocktail of folk, dance, electronic and experimental fusion from East Africa. Borrowing heavily from authentic benga styles, it introduces digital influences such as realtime remixing, sampling, and improvisation of arrangements in a live performance setting. After performances at the Kilifi New Year Festival, the Bengatronics collective showcase some of the heavyweights of Kenyan music scene (the Wakuu) with Makadem, the nyatiti wielding ohanglaman and Kasiva Mutua, the globe-trotting percussionist. Don’t miss this evening of Benga Groove laced with sprinkles of jazz, rhumba, soukus and anything in between!

The Alliance Française is a language and cultural relations organization. It was created in 1883 in Paris by renowned humanists, including Louis Pasteur and Jules Verne, with the principal objective of promoting and teaching the French language around the world. Since then, it has developed into a global network of the Alliance Française institutions operating in 135 countries around the world, with the common aim of fostering friendship between peoples, through the promotion of the French language and cultural diversity. The Alliance Française de Nairobi was founded in 1949. It has grown into one of the largest in Africa offering French language courses to thousands of students annually. It is the only accredited institution in Kenya for international and professional French language certification. It is also the only officially recognized institution in Kenya for certified translations. The institution offers a rich programme of annual activities showcasing local and international Arts and encouraging creativity. It supports the production and presentation of artistic works, across all disciplines, that reflect the diversity, aspirations and contradictions of our contemporary society and open up space for dialogue.
