Des extraits des Essais, des parallèles avec d’autres œuvres philosophiques, littéraires ou poétiques, mais aussi des projections d’œuvres picturales ou cinématographiques, nourriront la discussion entre les participants. • Mercredi 16 janvier : L’amitié Montaigne consacre un chapitre des Essais à l’amitié pour souligner la singularité et la réciprocité du lien amical surtout à l’heure des réseaux sociaux.

EXHIBITION
A COLOURFUL CONNECTION
The exhibition documents and shows the results of a month-long immersive arts collaboration between French street artists and musicians from Nantes and a selection of Kenyan artists and musicians.
L’exposition documente et montre les résultats d’une collaboration artistique immersive d’un mois entre des artistes de rue français et des musiciens nantais et une sélection d’artistes et de musiciens kényans.
This cross-cultural exchange was organized by SwitchA-Roo, a Kenyan start-up enterprise, founded by social entrepreneur Hephzibah Kisia.
Cet échange interculturel a été organisé par Switch-ARoo, une start-up kényane fondée par l’entrepreneur social Hephzibah Kisia.
Three artists from the French collective ‘Street Arts Sans Frontière’ worked with Kenyan artists, Naitemu and Mr. Nayed, painting in public spaces and streets, involving the public and showing that art is accessible to everyone and not limited to museums and galleries.
Trois artistes du collectif français Street Arts Sans Frontière ont travaillé avec les artistes kényans Naitemu et Mr. Nayed, peignant dans les espaces publics et les rues, impliquant le public et montrant que l’art est accessible à tous et ne se limite pas aux musées et aux galeries.

D’BASS GANUN Mbwana Mtulia, also known as D’bass Ganun, is a talented Tanzanian singer, songwriter, bassist and Qanun (Ganun) player. The Ganun is a 10th Century ancient Egyptian string instrument. D’bass picked up an interest in the instrument from his late father, a Qanun maestro, who tutored him. D’bass’s Ndengeleko tribe (from the island town of Rufiji) incorporated the instrument into their vibrant traditional music to create a unique contemporary sound that delivers a memorable listening experience. D’Bass is a graduate of the Dhow Countries Music Academy. He has also played with renowned musicians from across Africa including Maher Sisocko, Sousou Sisocko and Sadio Sisocko (Senegal/Gambia), Oliver Mtukudz (Zimbambwe) and Eric Wainaina (Kenya). The ‘Night of Ideas’ is an annual event, initiated by the Institut Français, the French Agency for international cultural cooperation, to share ideas and knowledge.
In partership with the Elephant, an online platform engaging citizens to reflect, re-member and re-envision their society, this year’s event will discuss the impact of social media on our society today.

En partenariat avec l’Elephant, une plateforme en ligne incitant les citoyens à réfléchir et à réenvisager leur société, l’événement de cette année traitera de l’impact des réseaux sociaux sur notre société actuelle.
Facing the present being this year’s general theme, media experts and practitioners will discuss the positives and negatives of social media that has become a fixture of our lives and changed our world.
Faire face au présent étant le thème général de cette année, des experts et professionnels des médias discuteront des aspects positifs et négatifs des médias sociaux, qui sont devenus un élément essentiel de nos vies et ont changé notre monde.
The discussion will be followed by a DJ set with the Beating Heart project presenting sounds from the forefront of Africa’s most exciting new styles.

ETHIO JAZZ FUNK
TRIO KAZANCHIS +2 It was in December 2008 that band leader Jeroen Visser (Switzerland) found himself jamming with Mesele Asmamaw (Ethiopia) and Fabien Duscombs (France) in various venues in the Ethiopian music Mecca, the Kazanchis district. The inescapable electricity that owed whilst jamming led them to form Trio Kazanchis, an ode to the district that has brought and continues to bring together many talented musicians and dancers. With Fabien holding down beats from a vast directory of lively grooves, multi-instrumentalist Jeroen adding a spirit of experimentation and punk rebellion, blended with Mesele’s mastery and innovation on the traditional krar, the result was a psychedelic tinged jazz funk.
Later they were joined by Endris Hassen, one of the best masenqo (a single-stringed bowed lute) players in Ethiopia and Trio Kazanchis was extended as Trio Kazanchis +1. The band will be in Nairobi for a one-off performance en route to the Sauti za Busara Festival in Zanzibar and will be joined by bass player Cyril Moulas, thus Trio Kazanchis +2. With improvisation at the core, the group’s live show will have you dancing and grooving hypnotically. A must for anyone who loves to travel through many worlds in one moment.

A GIRL LIKE ME
Anne Gichuku is a self-taught digital artist who with the help of friends and good old youtube continues to grow her art. She won in the ‘Digital Art’ category at the inaugural Sondeka Awards 2018 organized by Creatives Garage. Anne describes her style as funky and eclectic. She likes bold colours and bold themes and keeps her influences culturally relevant. She dedicates her first exhibition to girls like her.
‘I have always thought being a girl was a little bit of a fight - everyone seems entitled to an opinion about who you should be - what you wear, what you think, what you say, how much you weigh - It’s exhausting. Within my work, my ‘femmes’ do whatever the heck they want. They can be goofy, they can be naked, they can be vulnerable, they can like weird things, they can be green, or blue, they can be loud... they can be girls.’ Follow her on instagram: bissu_art

ASILI DUB Asili Dub is Kenya’s Pioneer Reggae-Dub band, which started as a collabo between Kombo Chokwe (AfroSimba band), Jahm (Filipino world-reggae musician) and DJ/ Producer Dread Steppa. The band’s heavily fused Live Reggae Dub sound is highly influenced by Taarab, Rockers, Dubstep and East African sounds and inspired by acts like Dub Dynasty, Black Uhuru, King Alpha, Bob Marley & The Wailers, Jah Shaka, & Salmonella Dub to name a few.
In early 2017, the band teamed up with Walter Mwangombe on keys, Morris Kivisi on drums, and Ras Lyon Hart on lead vocals to work on the band’s first ever release. The band’s upcoming self-titled debut album is a conscious blend between uplifting & bluesy lyrics, melodic African, Taarab and Indian inspired guitar riffs, heavy steppin bass lines, Rockers meets Dubstep beats, & a touch of Pink Floyd inspired psychedelic exploration.

SOFAZ The group Sofaz is a reflection of the Indian Ocean Island of Réunion. A melting pot of cultures and knowledge where song, music, dance and poetry express common dreams and realities, hopes and frustrations. On stage, the sax echoes the Kayamb, which itself responds to the djembe and the electro beats. The very special bond that ties this merry band together is matched only by their curiosity and vivacity. With their deep raw energy, Sofaz could be compared to a bubbling hot tub, a young erupting volcano, a trampoline to the trance!
