Friday Update Convention & Visitor’s Bureau The CVB Board will meet for its regularly scheduled Board Meeting next Wednesday, January 8th at 4:00pm in the Visitor Center Basement. Visit Nac staff is busy planning for the upcoming year and gearing up for the redesign of visitnacogdoches.org! Stay tuned for updates. Staff is currently working on a calendar of major events for the year, we expect to release it in the next week or so once dates are finalized. Friday Update Nacogdoches Historic Sites TICKETS ON SALE NOW for the Nacogdoches Beefsteak Dinner! The Nacogdoches County Historical Foundation, in partnership with Nacogdoches Historic Sites, is hosting the eighth annual Nacogdoches Beefsteak Dinner on Friday, January 24th at Mast Hall. This event is reminiscent of beefsteak dinners of the early 1900’s, when friends of politicians would throw dinners full of meat, beer, and bread, in an effort to raise money for their friends' campaigns. The dinners were rowdy and unsophisticated with no plates, cutlery, or napkins. The Nacogdoches Beefsteak Dinner is a fun event that directly benefits the continued care of the Historic Zion Hill Baptist Church. Tickets are $50 each or $400 for a table of 8 and can be purchased at the Nacogdoches CVB, Zion Hill Baptist Church Historic Site, C.L. Simon Recreation Center, from a member of the Nacogdoches County Historical Foundation, or online at eventbrite.com. We would love for you to attend. See you there! Friday Update Nacogdoches Public Library The library staff is offering Tech Heroes on Monday, January 6th from 12-2pm. Library staff will help customers learn to use their new (or not new) devices. The session is first-come, first-serve. Customers will also learn about the free digital products available through the library. This program is funded (in part) by grants from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services and Texas State Library and Archives Commission (Grant # LS-253655-OLS23).* (2024) Fiber Arts Club returns to the library on a new schedule. The group will meet the first Monday of each month from 5:00-6:30pm. Anyone interested in crocheting, knitting, sewing, or embroidery is welcome to gather with fellow fiber crafters once a month to enjoy the cozy comradery of a craft group, be inspired with new project ideas, and get help with learning new skills and fixing mistakes. The group is for ages 19+ years and no registration is required. A FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) Workshop will be held on January 8th at 5:30pm for anyone who will be enrolled in college or vocational school in the 2025-2026 school year. Library staff will provide instruction in completing the application and offering tips for first-year college students. The session is free, but registration through eventbrite.com is requested. The library is offering a free introductory lesson to the ukulele on Saturday, January 11th from 2:00-3:00pm. Participants will learn basic chords and get a chance to practice with an instructor. The event is for ages 12+ years. Registration through eventbrite.com is requested. Students should bring their own ukulele.

Friday Update Public Works Public Works crews are currently clearing the leaf route in zone 15 and brush in zone 12. Citizens can still haul their brush and bagged lawn debris for unlimited free dumps to the City Landfill located at 4602 N.W. Stallings Dr., with their City of Nacogdoches issued water bill and ID/DL showing proof of residence. Brush & Yard Waste Pickup • Tree limbs and brush shall be stacked on street right-of-ways, or within 3 to 6 feet of the curb or street. o Stacks shall not exceed 6'L X 4'W X 4'H and be limited to three piles. o The maximum diameter of the largest limb shall not exceed 12 inches in diameter. o Brush must be stacked in front of the residence that generated the brush. o Brush placed on vacant lots or in the streets will not be picked up. o Limbs should not extend into the roadway. Bagged yard waste o Bagged yard waste collection is "ONLY" available for residential addresses. o Bagged yard waste shall be placed within ten feet of the edge of the roadway for collection. Yard waste must be properly bagged. o The city will only collect 20 bags per residence per week. o Bagged Yard Waste may also be disposed of at the City landfill, for no charge, provided that the: -Resident provide current copy of water bill & drivers license as proof of residence.

Citizen’s Police Academy The Nacogdoches Police Department is set to host a Citizens’ Police Academy. Feb 3May 12. This 14-week program aims to provide citizens with a comprehensive understanding of the Nacogdoches Police Department and the field of law enforcement.
WE ARE ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR THE NEXT TEST DATE WHICH IS JANUARY 28TH 2025! WE ARE HIRING The Nacogdoches Police Department is accepting applications for certified and non-certified officers.
Sgt. Brett Ayres, the program coordinator, stated, “The initiative offers a thorough examination of law enforcement, focusing specifically on the policies and procedures of the Nacogdoches Police Department. It seeks to inform citizens about the rationale behind our decisions and the methods we employ in various situations.”

The program will commence on February 3rd, with the graduation ceremony planned for May 12th. Classes will take place at the police department every Monday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Attendance is free of charge, but enrollment is limited to 24 participants.

The Parks and Recreation Advisory board reviewed and approved the designs for the Maroney Park Playground rebuild. The contractor, Cox Jones, is working on the construction documents and the project should commence in early 2025.
Winter break mini-camps began on Thursday. Winter break mini-camp will also be offered Monday and Tuesday. Coming up this month, the Annual Kid Fish event will be held on January 25th 9am to noon at Lakeside Park. Kids ages 1-16 can participate in the tournament by weighing fish they caught during this time. Prizes will be offered to the winners. Winter/ Spring activity guides are available online by clicking here. Activity guides will be solely online, but feature in depth information and clickability to registration.

Friday Update Animal Services HSNC will reopen on Monday, January 6, 2025. They have done some restructuring in order to best serve our community while maintaining best practices to ensure continued funds for their programs. Changes to their emergency aid program as well as their TNR and spay/neuter assistance programs have been made. Applications are available on their website but will not be processed until their reopening after the first of the year. The shelter will be closing at 4:30pm on January 7, 2025 in order to allow staff to attend the commendation presentation of one of our employees. We will reopen on January 8th for normal business hours.
