Convention & Visitor’s Bureau Early numbers show this year’s Old Town Rig Down was the biggest yet for the event. A full event report will be shared in next week’s Friday update. Looking ahead to next week, Nac Snack Friday returns on September 25th from 11 am to 2 pm. Enjoy delicious food from local food trucks along the historic brick streets of Downtown Nacogdoches. SFA Family Weekend is also happening next weekend. Visit Nacogdoches has partnered with SFA to provide bus transportation for students and family members to Downtown Nacogdoches on September 26th from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm. Animal Services Today we hosted our Adventure Buddies at Nacogdoches Animal Services event! Volunteers had the chance to come by and take some of our eligible shelter dogs out for an adventure! It was a great event and we were able to get many of our dogs out of the shelter for an adventure for a day! Thanks to everyone who participated as well as our volunteers that helped us with set up and registration!

Nacogdoches Main Street Brick Street Burger Batte Brick Street Burger Battle is Back! The 2026 Brick Street Burger Battle kicks off Friday, September 11th and runs through October 25th! Participating restaurants are serving up specialty burgers created just for the competition, and customers get to help decide who takes home this year’s title. Try a burger, submit your rating, and you’ll be entered for a chance to win gift cards to participating restaurants! Friday Update Nacogdoches Historic Sites Texas Folklife Concert A wonderful time was had at the Texas Folklife concert last Friday. Guests learned how culture and history shaped each artist’s musical style before enjoying beautiful vocals, skillful guitar playing, rhythmic dancing, and audience participation. Thank you to Texas Folklife and the SFA School of Music for bringing this special event to Zion Hill. Maintenance at the Durst Taylor House The Durst Taylor House was closed this week while the entrance ramp was reconstructed. Although the ramp is not original to the historic house, it is essential for providing access to visitors of all abilities. Projects like this are an important part of the behind-the-scenes work required to maintain our historic sites and keep them safe, accessible, and welcoming to the public. New Brochures at Oak Grove Cemetery New Oak Grove Cemetery brochures are now available just inside the cemetery’s main entrance. The brochure shares the cemetery’s history and introduces several people buried there who influenced Nacogdoches and Texas history. With its historic gravesites, interpretive signs, and beautiful trees, Oak Grove Cemetery is a wonderful place to experience local history. Mark your calendar for a special fall Living History Tour on Saturday, November 14, presented by Friends of Historic Nacogdoches, Inc. During the tours, historic figures will come to life to share their stories.

The library offers free computer lessons. Interested persons may book a one-on-one session(s) with library staff. Lessons are available in English or Spanish. Please call 936-559-2970 to make an appointment. The library welcomes Danielle Sells from DETCOG. Ms. Sells will present Medicare 101 & Open Enrollment. She’ll explain the different Medicare plans in time for open enrollment. This program is ideal for those approaching Medicare age or adult children. Scrapbooking Friends is a group of people who love scrapbooking and want to meet fellow enthusiasts. The group meets the third Saturday of each month from 11am to 2:30pm. Basic tools are provided. The library concluded its activities for the Dollar General Literacy Foundation grant. The library added Playaways, Wonderbooks, Wazoodles, workbooks and Tonie Boxes to the collection to encourage reading!

Friday Update Public Works Public Works crews are currently clearing the brush in Zones 2 & 5. Citizens can still haul their brush and bagged lawn debris for unlimited free dumps to the City Landfill located at 4602 N.W. Stallings Dr., with their City of Nacogdoches issued water bill and ID/DL showing proof of residence. Brush & Yard Waste Pickup • Tree limbs and brush shall be stacked on street right-of-ways, or within 3 to 6 feet of the curb or street. o Stacks shall not exceed 6'L X 4'W X 4'H and be limited to three piles. o The maximum diameter of the largest limb shall not exceed 12 inches in diameter. o Brush must be stacked in front of the residence that generated the brush. o Brush placed on vacant lots or in the streets will not be picked up. o Limbs should not extend into the roadway. Bagged yard waste o Bagged yard waste collection is "ONLY" available for residential addresses. o Bagged yard waste shall be placed within ten feet of the edge of the roadway for collection. Yard waste must be properly bagged. o The city will only collect 20 bags per residence per week. o Bagged Yard Waste may also be disposed of at the City landfill, for no charge, provided that the: -Resident provide current copy of water bill & drivers license as proof of residence.

TxDOT Update
Public Works crews will be closing a section of Old Tyler Road in the 3300 block to thru traffic on Tuesday, September 22nd & Wednesday, September 23rd in order to conduct street repairs. The closure will be active from 8:30 a.m to 3:00 p.m. on both days but the road will be reopened for normal traffic inbetween these windows. Motorists are advised to seek alternate routes during this time.
TxDOT Update - Sept. 21-25 Nacogdoches County construction projects US 59, intersection improvements at SL 224. Bridge work between US 59 and SH 7 will continue. The contractor will pour concrete pavement as well. BU 59, SH/BS 7, SH/BS 21 and FM 2259 striping Manhole, curb and road repair may require nighttime lane closures. FM 2259, widening and improvement Right-of-way preparation will require daily lane closures. SH 7/CR 724, bridge replacements Daily lane closures are expected while the contractor continues work on driveways and seeding. US 59, turn-lane extensions Daily lane closures are expected as old striping is removed.

Youth Volleyball practices started this week. Games will begin October 3rd. Winter Youth Basketball league registration has begun. Players ages 5-14 can register for this recreation league. Last day of regular registration is October 11th. Volunteer coaches are needed. Click here to register.
