The Nacogdoches City Council voted Tuesday night to hire a firm to design and build a brand-new playground at Lake Nacogdoches West Park, using funding from the city’s 2023 bond program. The fall semester at SFA is just around the corner! Move-in day at the residence halls is on August 20, and fall classes will begin on August 24. We look forward to welcoming all of our SFA students back to Nacogdoches!

Convention & Visitor’s Bureau This week Visit Nacogdoches wrapped up SFA Orientation after six sessions! Staff enjoyed meeting new students and their families while providing bus tours and information at the resource fairs about all there is to do in Nacogdoches. Nac Summer Sips continues this Friday with Swirl & Swig Drink Truck on the square from Noon-5pm. The CVB Board of Directors will meet next Thursday, August 13th at 9am in the Visitor Center Downstairs Basement (200 E. Main St.)

Nacogdoches Main Street Save the date - Wine Swirl 2027! Mark your calendars! Wine Swirl 2027 returns to Downtown Nacogdoches on Saturday, April 10, 2027. Planning is already underway for another evening of great wine, delicious food, live music, and shopping in the heart of downtown. Stay tuned for theme announcements, ticket information, and more details in the coming months. Congratulations to our Wine Swirl Photo Contest Winner Congratulations to Celia, the winner of the 2026 Wine Swirl Photo Contest! Her photo captured the spirit of Wine Swirl, earning her two Wine & Appetizer Tickets to Wine Swirl 2027. Thank you to everyone who shared their favorite Wine Swirl memories. We look forward to creating even more unforgettable moments on April 10, 2027. Brick Street Burger Batte The Brick Street Burger Battle returns this fall, bringing another season of one-of-akind burgers and friendly competition to Downtown Nacogdoches. From September 11 through October 25, participating restaurants will serve specialty burgers created just for the challenge. Friday Update Nacogdoches Historic Sites Battle of Nacogdoches Commemoration This past Sunday, the Sterne-Hoya House hosted the 194th Anniversary Commemoration of the Battle of Nacogdoches. We were grateful to welcome a wonderful turnout of community members, elected officials, local leaders, and descendants of those who participated in the battle. Their presence made the commemoration especially meaningful and highlighted the lasting legacy of this important moment in Nacogdoches history. The event was made possible through the partnership of the Stone Fort Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas and the Adolphus Sterne Chapter of the Sons of the Republic of Texas, along with the support of volunteers, reenactors, musicians, speakers, City staff, and our Sterne-Hoya House neighbors. We appreciate everyone who helped make this year's commemoration a success!
Dallas Baptist University visits Zion Hill This week, Dallas Baptist University visited Zion Hill Baptist Church Historic Site to film a music video as part of their ‘Chapel Sessions’ series. We were excited to welcome their team and have Zion Hill serve as the setting for this special project. It was a wonderful opportunity to showcase the historic sanctuary in a new way while supporting DBU’s creative and musical programming. The library’s end of summer event will be held August 8th from 1-3pm. A total of 229 of people registered to track their reading and program attendance. The library held 28 programs this summer. We are very proud of our readers! The Humane Society of Nacogdoches County’s Remarkable Creatures series was a huge success. The last featured animal was Tater, the Mini Pig. The library continues to make improvements throughout the library. Changes include fresh paint, signage, a storytree, furniture and new Playaways.

Friday Update Public Works Public Works crews are currently clearing the leaf route in Zone 4 and the brush route in Zone 5. Citizens can still haul their brush and bagged lawn debris for unlimited free dumps to the City Landfill located at 4602 N.W. Stallings Dr., with their City of Nacogdoches issued water bill and ID/DL showing proof of residence. Brush & Yard Waste Pickup • Tree limbs and brush shall be stacked on street right-of-ways, or within 3 to 6 feet of the curb or street. o Stacks shall not exceed 6'L X 4'W X 4'H and be limited to three piles. o The maximum diameter of the largest limb shall not exceed 12 inches in diameter. o Brush must be stacked in front of the residence that generated the brush. o Brush placed on vacant lots or in the streets will not be picked up. o Limbs should not extend into the roadway. Bagged yard waste o Bagged yard waste collection is "ONLY" available for residential addresses. o Bagged yard waste shall be placed within ten feet of the edge of the roadway for collection. Yard waste must be properly bagged. o The city will only collect 20 bags per residence per week. o Bagged Yard Waste may also be disposed of at the City landfill, for no charge, provided that the: -Resident provide current copy of water bill & drivers license as proof of residence.

Upcoming Street Work - Pecan Street by Fredonia Bridge/Cox Street underneath South Street Bridge Beginning on Tuesday, August 11 and continuing through Wednesday, August 12, the Street Department will be working on Pecan Street between Pilar Street and Festival Park, as well as a separate work project on Cox Street which runs underneath the South Street bridge. Work will take place during the day and both streets will be closed to through traffic during these times. Motorists should plan alternate routes through the area while work is underway. Residents with questions may direct them to oppermanc@nactx.us.

Nacogdoches County and the City of Nacogdoches are updating the Nacogdoches County and City of Nacogdoches Hazard Mitigation Action Plan (HMAP). As part of this process, the County and City's Office of Emergency Management are holding public meetings to gather community input for developing the HMAP. The next such meeting is scheduled for Thursday, August 20 at 5:30 p.m. at the Garrison City Hall in Garrison, Texas (330 South B Avenue). All residents are invited to attend and participate in the discussion.
