Overview Unraveling some kind of galactic wilderness, J. Tillman’s sixth album lyrically borders on the mystic, proffering a transcendent union and a sense of effortlessness. Strange and honest, this song cycle inhabits its own idea-scape, seemingly obsessed with wrestling death. Tillman started recording in April, tracking most of the instruments himself. Hammered dulcimer, banjo, recorder, cymbals of varying size, and wheezing air organs all feature heavily. The string arrangements, performed by Jenna Conrad and transposed from Tillman’s sung direction, were intended to rest on chords almost counter-intuitively, bringing to bloom complex, decontextualized tones. YITK sounds liberated, and is far and away Tillman’s most joyful work. Created with little input or context, it is seemingly disinterested in communicating much else than a meditation for the few who allow themselves to listen with an open heart.

Overview From the first dramatic moments, Thea Gilmore’s new album exerts a strong emotional and musical pull, featuring all of the best songs that Gilmore has written and performed during her career. The 28-yearold British singer-songwriter, whose riveting voice at times recalls the elegance of Annie Lennox, has been making intensely personal, socially aware music to considerable acclaim in her homeland since she was a teenager. Overview Back in May 2006, we baptized the emergence of Montreal’s energetic party machine Think About Life with the release of their self-titled debut. Three years later, their sophomore effort is as off-the-hook as ever, but since they dropped their debut they have polished their sound without losing their edge. Three years is a long wait, but multiinstrumentalist Graham Van Pelt has been busy with his other band, Polaris prize nominees Miracle Fortress. Upon a base of hearty synths and sweaty drums, these tunes bubble with ’80s pop guitar licks and are bedazzled with meta-marshmallows of electronic drones and glitchy samples. Overview Haunting, beautiful, and intense are several words that can describe Life Cried’s sophomore album, the follow-up to the band’s critically acclaimed 2006 release Drawn & Quartered. Bandleader Chris Reject continues to push the boundaries of personal expression with his unique mix of introspective lyrics fused with dark electro and classical gothic influences. Overview Abstract Expression is the second album from San Francisco-based avant-pop producer Dominique Leone, and his first for vanguard American experimental music label Important Records. Leone, a classically trained artist and composer originally from Texas, is one of a growing number of college-educated musical auteurs writing songs for joyous, infatuated (or over saturated) people. All of his music could be considered “pop” of a sort, though with dashes of prog, classical music, electronica, and even noise it’s catchy but ambitious; crafted but not sterile; interesting but not pretentious. Overview Friendly Pants is the first American release by legendary Japanese saxophonist Akira Sakata in more than 20 years. It pairs the 65-yearold traveler alongside international bombast drummer Chris Corsano and grooving acoustic bassist Darin Gray in a session produced by Jim O’Rourke. The music within is as thrilling as the line-up suggests. Since the late 1960s, Sakata has been a constant voice in the Japanese jazz and creative music scenes as an ever-evolving and adventurous multi-instrumentalist and singer. He is a member of renowned Japanese groups such as Yamashita Yosuke Trio and Wha-ha-ha, as well as his own trios and groupings. Over the years, he has recorded with Bill Laswell, Chris Cosey, Peter Brötzmann, Last Exit, DJ Krush, and many others. Since 2005 Sakata has recorded and toured with Chikamorachi—the rhythm section of Corsano and Gray that lays a foundation equally informed by underground American rock, noise, and free jazz—and delivered ferocious and highly lyrical approaches to the post-bop format. While the three smear the edges at times, Sakata’s massive tone and melodic sense reins in the troops, at times recalling later-period John Coltrane or Pharaoh Sanders during the early 1970s.
