EDWARDSVILLE A WEEKEND OF SONGS AND STORIES City Park and the historic Wildey Theatre will both be home to a weekend of musical celebrations of the Mother Road. The Wildey will have live music along with an evening of poetry. Dueling Pianos, a blues band and the Edwardsville Municipal Band will take the stage at City Park. HAMEL ROUTE 66 CAR & BIKE SHOW Vintage and antique cars and motorcycles rev their engines during this Mother Road celebration. Cars, snacks, crafts and more on hand. Horseshoe Lake State Park, Collinsville
At more than 2,960 acres in size, this park perched along a horseshoe bend of the Mississippi River between Collinsville and Granite City, offers hunting, boating, fishing and hiking. It’s a great place for a fall picnic too.

Located just outside Carlinville, the park is 750 acres of oak/hickory woodlands full of hiking, fishing and boating opportunities.

U Pick Apple Farms Apples fill the trees at Broom Orchard in rural Carlinville. From mid-September through October pick your own. The orchard hosts a late September Apple Festival and in mid-October look for the annual Pumpkin Festival. Plus, they make their own apple cider from midSeptember through Nov. 1. When the air turns crisp, the apples at Eckert’s Country Store & Farms in Grafton are ready to be picked. Enjoy a hay wagon ride to the orchards to pick your own. Or shop in the country store for fresh produce, apple cider, apple butter, jams and jellies and so much more. Fall fun at Eckert’s includes carnival rides, pony and camel rides, a petting farm and miniature golf. Gala. McIntosh. Jonathan. Honeycrisp. Fuji. Candycrisp. Pink Lady. Granny Smith. Those are just a few of the varieties of apples available for U Pick at Liberty Apple Orchard in Edwardsville. From mid-August through late October, the orchard is an apple pickers paradise. Be sure to pick up Amish made apple butter and applesauce (made from Liberty’s apples) at the store. Finger-licking good apple cider donuts are available on Saturdays. And don’t forget the honey made from hives on site! U Pick apple delights are available at Mills Apple Farm in Marine. The best apples are available after the first frost but there are still local made-fromscratch baked goods and preserves on hand. After Labor Day enjoy weekend wagon and tractor rides and meet the farm animals. Pumpkins are also available to pick in October.

Pumpkin Patches On the hunt for a giant pumpkin? Look no further than Greene Fields Farm in rural Greenfield. This authentic working farm has over 160 varieties of pumpkins available for U Pick on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays in September and October. If pumpkins aren’t on your menu, browse the gourds and squash in the 8-acre patch. And there’s more! Discover massive mums, apples and cut flower bouquets. There’s also fresh kettle corn, apple cider slushes, apple cider donuts and full grill specialties available for sale. Fall means it’s pumpkin chuckin’ time at Relleke Pumpkin Farm in Granite City. Visit this farm and hunt for the perfect plump pumpkin. Then let the kids enjoy the fun including a pyramid slide, pumpkin chucking, pumpkin painting and more. The farm is open from late September through Halloween and has a fall celebration every weekend. Pre-picked pumpkins, fall produce and more are also available for sale at the Relleke farm stand. Plump pumpkins and colorful flowers are some of the highlights of a visit to St. Jacob’s DeMange Corn Maze and Pumpkin Patch in the fall. GREAT GODFREY CORN MAZE
KEEPING IT OLD SCHOOL
This classic maze opens in early September and runs through early November and includes a haunted maze after dark in October. This year’s theme is “Inside Out”.
Pack the car with the kids or a bunch of friends and enjoy a movie night at Litchfield’s Rt 66 Skyview Drive-In. It’s one of the last operational drive in theaters on Route 66.
MARKET DAYS Vintage market season comes to an end in October. The final Litchfield Pickers Market is Sunday, Oct. 11. The last Riverside Flea Market in Grafton is Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 24 & 25.

BRIDGE VIEWS Take a walk across the milelong Chain of Rocks Bridge. This pedestrian only bridge rises high above the Mississippi River linking Illinois to Missouri providing great views of the river and fall foliage.
THE GREAT OUTDOORS CAHOKIA MOUNDS STATE HISTORIC SITE Step back to prehistoric times at this UNESCO World Heritage Center. Climb Monk’s Mound by way of a 154-step staircase for panoramic fall views of the region. The indoor center features artifacts, a gift shop and replicas of Native American life at this once vibrant settlement.
Pitch a tent or pull the camper in to a local campground for a last outdoor hurrah this fall. Reserve a spot at Pere Marquette State Park in Grafton or Lake Lou Yaeger Campground in Litchfield and roast some marshmallows over the open fire.
KEEP IT WILD Take a walk through the Bremer Wildlife Sanctuary in Hillsboro. This 200-acre site features hiking trails throughout the restored prairie landscape. Bring the binoculars for bird and wildlife watching.

A new, limited release beer honoring the Mother Road, aptly named Kicks, has been developed through a collaboration between Old Herald Brewery & Distillery and Mississippi Culture. Every fall the ghosts of Alton come out to play. From a looming, historic haunted mansion filled with over a dozen named spirits, to haunted walking and trolley tours of downtown Alton, the city is brimming with haunted tales sure to delight even the staunchest non-believer. Explore the historically haunted side of Alton with a spine-tingling, ghostly visit to the most haunted sites in this Mississippi River community known as “One of the Most Haunted Small Towns in America”.

Be part of the ghostly adventure with an Alton Odyssey tour this fall. Alton Odyssey has been hosting haunted tours since 1992. Book a spot on the popular Haunted Craft Beer Walk or immerse yourself in the city’s past with a Behind the Bricks Tour which includes a quick Ghosts 101 and demo of ghost hunting equipment before embarking on an interactive ghost hunt.

Supernatural historian and mystery buff Troy Taylor has done a deep dive on hauntings in Alton over the last 25 years and offers a series of tours focused on the history and hauntings of the city. They include Haunted History Walking Tours, Downtown Alton Haunted Pub Crawl, Ghosts of the River Road Dinner Tours, Haunted History Bus Tours and Great River Hauntings Tours.

Experience the paranormal for yourself on a tour of this once spectacular mansion that includes a dark room session in the basement wine cellar. There are tours and events every weekend from Sept. 25 through Oct. 24.
Explore the strange, haunted, supernatural and sideshow relics that have found a home at Troy Taylor’s American Oddities Museum, 301 Piasa St., Alton. Exhibits include artifacts from local haunted buildings including the Enos Apartments and McPike Mansion as well as a Victorian Vampire Killing kit, a taxidermized ‘mermaid’ and hundreds of equally bizarre items. The museum is also home to American Hauntings Ink bookstore. Open Thursday – Sunday from Noon to 5 p.m. Admission is $7 per person.

Pack your suitcase and your bicycle for a weekend of fresh air adventures along the worldclass biking trails crisscrossing southwest Illinois. Start in Edwardsville with a day exploring the MCT Trails which are dotted with whimsical art critters and stunning scenery. These Class I bikeways (meaning they are separated from the road) travel more than 130 miles on over 10 named trails. The trails feature 48 bridges, 22 tunnels and a few at-grace crossings. Use the MCT Loop system to ensure you don’t see the same scenery twice in one trip. Be sure to stop at the Col. Benjamin Stephenson House, one of the first brick homes in Edwardsville and open for historic tours. If the kids are along for the ride, the Edwardsville Children’s Museum is the perfect place to take a break. Many of the MCT Trails link to downtown Edwardsville and Glen Carbon, both home to a wide variety of lunch and dinner options including the classic Cleveland Heath, Ed’s Delicatessen, and Taqueria Z. Snider is a visionary multimedia artist celebrated for his imaginative works that blend surrealism with cultural storytelling. Large scale installations dominating the space, the artwork integrates cultural icons and vintage pieces into statement art. “Kooliverse is your own Universe of all Kool things” Snider says.

HOLIDAYS ON ICE Lace up your ice skates at The Loading Dock Ice Rink this holiday season. The indoor rink, housed in the historic Boat Works Building along the banks of the Mississippi River, offers ice skating and post-skate fire pit fun every weekend from Nov. 21 through Feb. 28. There is also a special Balloon Drop New Year’s Eve Party on Dec. 31.
Pack up the family and head to Alton’s Christmas Wonderland for a drive through light show that is second to none. More than 4 million lights guide the way through Rock Spring Park lighting up a variety of nostalgic and contemporary holiday displays. Stop by Santa’s Village to meet Jolly Ol’ St. Nick and get photos with the kids. Christmas Wonderland is open every evening from Nov. 27 through Dec. 27. Admission is $10 per vehicle.
Light up the holidays in Collinsville at the annual Christmas at the D.D. Collins House and Light Up Parade on Dec. 5. The parade steps off in Uptown Collinsville before ending at the historic D.D. Collins House. Evening events include the annual tree lighting ceremony, visits with Santa and Mrs. Claus and more. Miners Theater in Uptown Collinsville welcomes the third annual Sinatra Christmas Big Band Tribute on Saturday, Dec. 19. Tickets start at $25.
Calling all Santas! The City of Grafton is once again hosting a Santa-themed pub crawl, affectionately called Santa Con, on Saturday, Dec. 12. Dress up in your best Santa Claus garb and join in the fun. Added bonus – a photo with all the Santa attendees will be taken at the end of the crawl at The Loading Dock. That’s not all Grafton has on tap for the holidays. Take part in the Holiday Treats Trail on Dec. 5, the Lighted Holiday Parade on Dec. 19 and the annual New Year’s Eve Fireworks on Dec. 31. The holidays are bright in Edwardsville. The community tree lighting and Holiday Concert at City Park starts the holiday fun on Dec. 5. Visit the Edwardsville Children’s Museum on Saturday, Nov. 28 when Santa himself arrives at the Nickel Plate Depot. Staunton celebrates the holidays with a weeklong event that includes a tree lighting, snack with Santa, holiday market and more. Visit Litchfield in November for an early kick off to the holidays. The annual Festival of Trees will be held Nov. 13-14 and the Lighted Christmas Parade is planned for Nov. 14.

As icy winds and cold temps settle over southwest Illinois, the rugged limestone bluffs, quiet river valleys, and icy waters of the Mississippi River transform into one of North America’s most remarkable wildlife destinations.
It’s winter and that means Eagle Season is here. Hundreds of American Bald Eagles travel to the relatively warmer climate of the area and dine out on the abundant fish found in the Mississippi, Illinois and Missouri rivers. Their journey from the frigid northern states captures the attention of bird watchers, photographers and nature lovers along with visitors who keep their eyes on the skies for a glimpse of these magnificent birds.
Kick off the start of Eagle Season with the annual Alton Eagle Ice Festival on Saturday, Jan. 9. Head to FLOCK Food Truck Park for a free Eagle Meet and Greet, kids activities and more. Events will also take place on Broadway Street in Alton along with other locations in the region including the National Great Rivers Museum and Melvin Price Locks and Dam, The Audubon Center at Riverlands and the Byway Discovery Center at Great Rivers Park.

On Saturdays in January, enjoy a free eagle meet and greet session in two different locations in Grafton and at the Alton Visitor Center in downtown Alton. These four-hour sessions are a fun mix eagle watching tips coupled with educational discussions with an eagle expert with World Bird Sanctuary. This is a great opportunity to see an American Bald Eagle up close and learn more about the national bird.

Eagle Viewing Where are the best spots to view wintering bald eagles in southwest Illinois? Look to the trees! American Bald Eagles like to perch in trees lining the rivers and bluffs of the region. River ice floes are another popular spots for eagles who watch for fish as they float down the river.

Both Pere Marquette State Park in Grafton and the Audubon Center at Riverlands are prime eagle viewing locations. The Audubon Center hosts a variety of eagle and birds of winter events in January and February each year. Flock to the center and enjoy eagle viewing from indoor spotting scopes. Or grab your binoculars and take a walk on the outdoor trails to see eagles, trumpeter swans and other birds of winter in the wild. Pere Marquette State Park, with its 8,000 acres of woodlands along the Illinois River is another eagle watching hotspot. Free guided tours are offered annually. Free eagle watching tours are planned for Jan. 20, Feb. 2, 3, 4, 5, 26, March 5 & 12. Contact the park to reserve your spot.

Eagle Watching Shuttle Tours Take a guided eagle watching shuttle tour and find out where American Bald Eagles like to hang out when they are in southwest Illinois. The two-hour tours prowl through the Alton region showcasing some of the best eagle watching spots. The tours also stop near a resident eagle nest for great photo opportunities. Tours are held on Saturdays Jan. 9, 16, 23, 30, Feb. 6, 13 & 20.

Pere Marquette Lodge & Conference Center hosts its annual Bald Eagle Festival on Jan. 31. This free, family-friendly festival includes a meet and greet with a live American Bald Eagle, local vendors, food and drinks. Bald Eagle Days will be held Feb. 6 at the Audubon Center at Riverlands. This festival includes live bald eagle programs, eagle viewing and more. Bring the kids to the National Great Rivers Museum’s annual Ice Jam at the Dam which will be held alongside Alton Eagle Ice Fest Saturday, Jan. 9. This festival features kid-friendly fun and water safety activities.

A LEGACY OF COURAGE Near the banks of the Mississippi River in Grafton, a group of life-sized bronze U.S. Army Rangers attempt to scale the soaring limestone bluffs in a visually moving memorial to World War II’s D-Day invasion of France. The National Memorial of Military Ascent is a soaring tribute to U.S. soldiers and its location on the bluffs near the Grafton Visitor Center draws the attention of veterans and travelers alike. The memorial is the first step of a plan to create a first-class Veteran’s Memorial Complex in Grafton which will include a museum. The centerpiece of this complex is the reproduction of the U.S. Army Rangers climbing the Pointe Du Hoc cliffs on Omaha Beach as part of the initial D-Day landings. Visit this inspiring memorial during a visit to Grafton.
