TIME FOR A FRESH START

One minute you’re enjoying leftover pavlova for breakfast, the next you’re convincing yourself you’re about to become the kind of person who drinks green juice at sunrise and meditates before checking emails. The New Year often brings a strong urge to set ambitious health goals.

There’s one healthy habit that quietly influences almost every part of our wellbeing, and that’s sleep. Deep, consistent, restorative sleep acts as daily healthcare. When you sleep well, everything works better. Your mood, metabolism, skin, hormones, focus and even your appetite cues all benefit. When sleep becomes inconsistent or disrupted, the body has a way of sending subtle, and not so subtle, reminders that it’s time to pay attention.

THE CORTISOL CONNECTION

Cortisol is your body’s main stress hormone, and it thrives on routine. It naturally rises in the morning to wake you up and gradually decreases throughout the day. When sleep is disrupted, cortisol can fall out of rhythm.

You might notice:

• Waking up tired even after a full night’s sleep

• Feeling wired at night and sluggish during the day

• Increased irritability or a shorter fuse

Managing Director

Poor sleep can elevate cortisol levels and make it even harder to rest, creating a frustrating cycle that many people slip into without realising it. Breaking that cycle may be as simple as setting a consistent bedtime, creating a wind-down routine, supporting your body with the right nutrients, or speaking with a health professional if sleep issues persist. Consistency is key.

An evening wind-down routine might include:

• Light stretching, warm tea, soft lighting and slow breathing

• Putting your phone away earlier and reading a chapter of a book

• A warm shower, calming music and gentle skincare before settling into quiet

Healthy sleep is one of the most powerful and underestimated tools you have. It’s your daily reset button. Make it a priority this year and notice how much easier the rest of your wellbeing goals become.

If you need further help or advice about sleep options or medications, speak with your Alive Pharmacy Prescribing Pharmacist.

Fun Fact

Animals dream too. Dogs, cats and other mammals experience REM sleep patterns similar to humans. Studies suggest dogs may dream about play, chasing or interacting with their owners.

THE WEIGHT LOSS RHYTHM

Working with your body as it changes

Weight loss can feel unpredictable, but understanding your body helps make sense of the process. For women, hormonal changes throughout the month influence energy levels, appetite and water retention. Learning to work with these patterns rather than against them can make weight management more sustainable.

Early in the cycle During the follicular phase, energy is often higher, cravings are lighter and workouts feel easier. This can be a great time for structured exercise and strength training.

Around ovulation Many women feel motivated and capable of tackling more challenging activities.

Later in the cycle During the luteal phase, progesterone rises and metabolism increases slightly. The body naturally craves more fuel, and bloating, fatigue and temporary weight gain are common. These changes are biological, not personal setbacks. This is a good time to slow down, practise yoga or enjoy gentle movement like walking with friends.

Recognising your body’s natural rhythm makes weight management more achievable over time. As we age, weight loss shifts from restriction to support. Metabolism can slow, muscle mass declines, and hormonal changes influence energy, appetite and fat storage.

A nutrient-focused approach becomes especially important:

• prioritise protein to maintain muscle and metabolism

• include healthy fats to support hormone balance

• ensure adequate calcium, vitamin D and magnesium for bone health

• consider B vitamins or iron if energy levels are low

Fragrance is one of the easiest gifts to get right. It feels personal without being complicated, and when you know someone well, you usually know the kind of scent that suits them. Fresh and clean. Warm and comforting. A touch of romance without trying too hard.

That instant connection is no accident. Fragrance is closely linked to memory and emotion, with scent connecting directly to the brain’s emotional centre. That’s why the right fragrance can feel familiar straight away and leave a lasting impression.

This Valentine’s Day, make gifting easy. Explore our fragrance favourites and find something that feels thoughtful, wearable and quietly romantic from the first spray.
