Food, at its core, is beautifully simple. Good quality, whole ingredients can be transformed into something wild and magical when flavours collide. It awakens the senses, transports us through space and time, and turns the ordinary into the extraordinary. It taps into our deepest emotions and reminds us of who we are and how we love.
Choosing whole foods doesn’t mean going without. It means leaning in and getting curious. It means trading the processed and predictable for naturally delicious and playful. A chance to explore colour, texture, and flavour at their peak, alive with the taste of season and story.
A cut of meat you’ve never tried, a fruit rind you thought was trash, or a homemade sauce so good, it becomes your new signature. Cooking this way invites play and discovery, and it keeps your mind wildly aware and your connection to the natural world beautifully intact.

Beyond his work as a comedy actor, Ben Stiller has also distinguished himself as a director and producer, going behind the camera for such films as Zoolander and Tropic Thunder, along with acclaimed TV projects Escape at Dannemora and Severance
It’s fair to say that Stiller’s latest project is his most personal: a heartfelt documentary about his parents, Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara, who, as Stiller & Meara, became one of the most successful comedy duos of the 1960s and ’70s. While they broke up the act, they remained spouses, with each going on to significant individual accolades — Meara as a frequent TV guest star, and Stiller as Seinfeld’s Frank Costanza, followed by a nine-season stint on King of Queens
In Stiller & Meara: Nothing Is Lost, their son shines the spotlight on this husband-andwife comedy team, focusing on both their showbiz success and their family life.
According to the doc’s synopsis, Stiller explores the impact his parents had on him and his siblings, in addition to their wider influence on pop culture — two seemingly disparate elements which, the film points out, often blurred together. “In the process, Stiller
turns the camera on himself and his family to examine Jerry and Anne’s enormous influence on their lives, and the generational lessons that we can all learn from those we love.”
“I feel very fortunate to be partnering once again with the incredible team at Apple TV+, this time on a project that is very personal to me and my family,” said Stiller.
“It’s exciting to finally get to share it with audiences; and a great honour to celebrate my parents, both as I knew them growing up, and as I’ve come to know them in new ways through the making of this film.”

What’s up with that Golden Girls remake from last year?
E.H., West Vancouver While not a direct “remake” of The Golden Girls, Disney+’s Mid-Century Modern — starring Nathan Lane, Matt Bomer and Nathan Lee Graham as three single gay men of a certain age who decide to move in together — was certainly reminiscent of Dorothy and the gals, with creators Ryan Murphy, Max Mutchnick and David Kohan even namechecking the classic sitcom as an inspiration. Alas, despite positive reviews, the throwback multi-cam sitcom struggled to attract an audience. “Ten great episodes . . . Not enough,” Mutchnick eulogized on social media. “We’re gonna miss our very special show.”

Just watched Cillian Murphy’s new Netflix movie, and it got me wondering if there’s more Peaky Blinders to come? Weren’t they talking about doing that?

Despite the fact that he’s fresh off an Oscar for historical blockbuster Oppenheimer, and the recent acclaimed Netflix drama Steve, Irish thespian Cillian Murphy hasn’t forgotten his roots. Not only is he primed for a return to
the 28 Days Later franchise next year, he’s also set to don the razor-blade-lined cap of 1920s Birmingham gangster Tommy Shelby in a feature film follow-up to Peaky Blinders that will hit Netflix sometime in 2026.
The show ended its wildly popular six-season run back in 2022. The new movie is titled The Immortal Man, and will jump ahead several years to the midst of the Second World War, as Tommy — ever balancing between criminal and soldier — returns to Birmingham and becomes entangled in espionage
The

Supporting cast will include Silo’s Rebecca Ferguson and The Banshees of Inisherin’s Barry Keoghan Meanwhile, creator Steven Knight has also signed on to produce a two-season sequel series; Murphy will not appear, but has been tapped as a producer. The official synopsis is as follows: “After being heavily bombed in WWII, Birmingham is building a better future out of concrete and steel. In a new era of Steven Knight’s Peaky Blinders, the race to own Birmingham’s massive reconstruction project becomes a brutal contest of mythical dimensions. This is a city of unprecedented opportunity and danger . . . with the Shelby family right at its blood-soaked heart.”
I’ve been liking this second season of Doc, but I just
wonder if we’re ever going to see Scott Wolf again?
J.J., Victoria
The Party of Five alum exited this Fox medical drama in dramatic fashion during the season-one finale, when his character, Dr. Richard Miller, was stripped of his title as chief of internal medicine at Westside Hospital after his misdeeds in making a fatal error and then attempting to cover it up were exposed by ormer mentor Amy Larsen (Molly Parker). While he’s been absent thus far from the sophomore season, Miller will be back — and in a way you likely won’t expect. As showrunners Barbie Kligman and Hank Steinberg summed up in a statement: “We always knew when Richard got fired that would never be the last of him. But no one expected him to come back to Westside like this — least of all Amy.”
An exact air date has yet to be announced for Wolf’s arrival, but keep in mind that while season one was only 10 episodes long, season two will run for 22.

I am still a big fan of the “atomic age” sci-fi movies of the 1950s, and am sure, when watching a classic about giant ants called Them!, that I actually saw a young Mr. Spock from Star Trek . . .
I.R., Vancouver
Cutting right to the chase, you are right. Leonard Nimoy, a decade before becoming Mr. Spock on the original Star Trek, had an uncredited, non-speaking part in this story of giant ants that mutated in the New Mexico desert because of atomic testing. Movies such as this were a common starting point for many untried actors who became famous in later years, including Nimoy, who also played an alien in the 1952 serial Zombies of the Stratosphere. Indeed, Them! (1954) was one of many now-iconic sci-fi films that captured the imaginations of moviegoers during the late 1950s and very early 1960s, including such indelible titles as The Thing From Another World, Earth vs. the Flying Saucers and Invasion of the Body Snatchers James Arness also had a small role in Them!, which followed his portrayal of an alien creature in The Thing From Another World. Those appearances ultimately led to his starring role as Marshal Matt Dillon in the TV series Gunsmoke. It is said that Walt Disney himself paid particular attention to Them! because he wanted Arness for the signature role of Davy Crockett in a new miniseries; however, Fess Parker, who also had a small role in the giant-ant flick, captured Disney’s attention in a stronger fashion than did Arness, and it was Parker who became “king of the wild frontier.”

Starting her career off with pulpy genre fare like Near Dark and the incomparable Point Break, filmmaker Kathryn Bigelow has, in the last two decades, become a specialist in the field of politically charged thrillers like The Hurt Locker, Zero Dark Thirty and, most recently, Detroit. Indeed, it’s a career pivot that made her the first female director ever to win an Academy Award.
For her first narrative feature in eight years, Bigelow delves into similarly topical territory with A House of Dynamite, now hitting Netflix after a well-received run on the festival circuit.
When a single nuclear missile is launched at the United States by sources unknown, a group of government shot-callers (including Silo’s Rebecca Ferguson as the White House official in charge of the war room and The Wire’s Idris Elba as the president himself) scramble to figure out what in the name of God is happening and how to respond — as tempers flare and paranoia spirals.
In a director’s statement given to the Venice Film Festival this past summer, Bigelow explained: “I grew up in an era when hiding under your school desk was considered the go-to protocol for surviving an atomic bomb. It seems absurd now — and it was — but at the time, the threat felt so immediate that such measures were taken seriously. Today, the danger has only escalated. Multiple nations possess enough nuclear weapons to end civilization within minutes. And yet, there’s a kind of collective numbness — a quiet normalization of the unthinkable. How can we call this ‘defense’ when the inevitable outcome is total destruction?”
The Oscar winner continued: “I wanted to make a film that confronts this paradox — to explore the madness of a world that lives under the constant shadow of annihilation, yet rarely speaks of it.”

Across its 37 seasons (with at least two more to come), Matt Groening’s irreverent animated sitcom has ebbed and flowed in terms of quality. But amidst that creative tumult, the annual Halloween special has remained reliably amusing, if only for the fact that it completely dispenses with the show’s already tenuous hold on reality and unleashes a dark, bloody, silly trio of misadventures where anything and everything goes.
In this year’s “Treehouse of Horror” three-pack, “the town is menaced by a mysterious murdering monster from out of the sewers, Krusty has a demonic special guest on his live Halloween special and we go a thousand years into Springfield’s poseable plastic post-apocalyptic future.” Guest voices include Oscar winner Viola Davis (Fences), OG Batman himself Michael Keaton, The Studio Emmy nominee Ike Barinholtz and the aforementioned Idris Elba. Much as “Treehouse of Horror” is a calendar-circling event for us viewers, it’s also the half-hour that the show’s

writers have in their creative sights time and again. As producer Brian Kelley told Animation Scoop in 2023: “It’s the most important [episode]. We look forward to it every year. It’s so fun to write. I know fans really love it. You get to be non-canonical and do whatever you want. The freedom is great. It’s tough to come up with new stuff at this point. I’m not gonna lie. We’ve parodied just about every horror and science fiction movie that anyone’s seen. But the challenge is really fun. We love it. We spend a lot of time on it. It’s a real labour of love.”
Alas, per Kelley, there’s one aspect of this tradition no one in the crew enjoys: coming up with spooky twists on their own names for the opening credits: “It’s really cool that we get to do this. But when you try to do your 20th . . . it’s hard to do puns off ‘Brian Kelley.’ But we’ll keep doing it as long as people keep watching!”

he menopausal reawakening of working-class homemaker Linda wraps for season two. Her efforts to reconnect with her youth in the Forest of Dean and forge a new path have not come without controversy, as the season began with our heroine being put on trial, Salem-style, for daring to defy the norm. “I wanted to explore witchcraft themes in the series for a few reasons,” creator/star Bridget Christie told Beyond the Joke. “Firstly, because even though we don’t put women on trial for witchcraft any longer, society is still judgmental, and fearful of, women who don’t easily fit into stereotypes. Women who challenge the status quo, and reject
authority, who don’t fit, speak out, don’t have or want husbands or children, old women, are precisely the types of women who would have been put on trial and executed. It was an abhorrent and tragic miscarriage of justice, and one that I feel has not been appropriately acknowledged or apologized for. I also wanted to explore ideas around women’s intuition, our power and mystery, and how, instead of the word ‘witch’ being a derogatory term, it is, in fact, a compliment.”
In tonight’s finale, Joy, the angry leader of the male mob, faces a revolt from his own followers. As a result the town’s women put an end to their “strike,” and the future has a little hope again.

Keith Urban knows well what it’s like to be a novice act opening at a big concert — which is why he was so game to be the frontman on The Road. With fellow country music icon Blake Shelton and Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan also onboard as exec producers, the show makes 12 aspiring artists the opening acts for Urban at his concerts, with the on-site audiences determining who will continue with him during the tour. The winner receives $250,000, a recording contract and a showcase performance spot at next year’s Stagecoach Country Music Festival in Indio, California.
“Redneck Woman” singer Gretchen Wilson serves as Tour Manager, helping to give behind-the-scenes views of the contestants while they’re at or between concert venues. With four Grammys, 15 ACM awards and 13 CMAs, Urban is certainly a titan in his field, but he still remembers those essential, hardscrabble early days that The Road seeks to capture. “We’ve all been in that position of opening for somebody,” he reflects, “walking out and facing a crowd that not only doesn’t know who we are, but doesn’t care who we are. And we’ve got to try and grab them in that minimal amount of time we’re given. That’s what makes this show so unique; this is the real world, this is what really happens.” Adds Wilson, on the “tour bus” side of things: “Sometimes, you get to know a little more about each other than you really ever wanted to. The way it’s filmed, the way it feels, I almost started crying just remembering every little moment that we had out there with all of these musicians. The behind-the-scenes, the real rawness of it, is different from anything else that I’ve ever seen [in a music competition].”

With production still in progress, the series wasn’t supposed to debut for some time. However, when Goodall died in late September at age 91, Netflix execs decided to release her episode ahead of schedule as a way of honouring her extraordinary life and legacy.
“In the place where I am now, I look back over my life. I look back at the world I’ve left behind. What message do I want to leave? I want to make sure that you all understand that each and every one of you has a role to play,” said Goodall in the interview, while sipping from a glass of whiskey that she said was good for her voice. “You may not know it, you may not find it, but your life matters, and you are here for a reason. And I just hope that reason will become apparent as you live through your life. I want you to know that, whether or not you find that role that you’re supposed to play, your life does matter, and that every single day you live, you make a difference in the world. Gender-swapping

Back in 2019, a bloody, silly and, alas, timely superhero satire called The Boys unexpectedly became one of Prime Video’s brand-defining series.
Based on the graphic novels by Garth Ennis, the series took a fresh, fiendishly clever approach to Avengers-esque comic book narratives by painting its “heroes” as demented monsters whose absolute superpowers corrupted absolutely, outmatched only by the all-too-human corruption of Vought, the corporation that made them.
As viewership and Emmy nominations rolled in, Amazon began expanding their cinematic
universe with spinoffs. One of those was Gen V, set at Godolkin University — a college founded to train the next generation of “Supes.”
The show wraps its eight-episode second semester today, as the scrappy students of “God U” fight back against an institution that seeks to harness and warp their potential for corporate gain.
No doubt, Gen V tackles many of the same themes as its mothership series — but distinguishes itself by honing in on the volatile years of adolescence. “The Boys is different. That’s more about power and corruption and celebrity,” muses Hamish Linklater, who joined the cast this year as the inscrutable Dean Cipher. “This is really about human development. The metaphor of these powers, which are a kid’s weakness

— these feelings of self-harm and mental illness and just menstruation — but that’s their superpower. The thing that makes you feel the most vulnerable might actually be the thing that makes you the most powerful. I think that’s a really rich, rich message.”
A perfect embodiment of that is Emma (a.k.a. Little Cricket), whose powers of shrinking and growing her body are tied to her self-esteem and the resulting eating disorder. “I think that’s what’s so great about Gen V and the whole [Boys] universe,” says actress Lizze Broadway. “The creative team is absolutely fearless. They’re gonna have an opinion and say it. And I think that’s why people get behind the show, because it has an original voice. It’s not trying to appease everyone.”
Part of that fearlessness involves reflecting real-world issues like the rise of fascism, as the God U campus descends into Supe supremacy, with “heroes” harrassing any humans in their orbit. Sean Patrick Thomas, who plays aging hero Polarity, feels the show is uniquely positioned to comment on such things: “If you’re trying to sit somebody down and explain fascism to them or racial supremacy, they might not get it when you try to explain it in realworld terms. But when you tell those stories and illuminate those things in a superhero show, I think it’s a phenomenal teaching tool. They can see it in these characters, in these situations on the show, and it can make it more tangible to them. Then maybe, hopefully, they can take those lessons into their real lives and see how these dangerous, toxic things that are happening in the world of Gen V are also happening
in real life. And [then ask] is that OK with you? Do you wanna push back against that?”
On the topic of timeliness, Linklater adds: “Certainly, the university setting . . . suddenly reading a book might be the most dangerous thing that an American can do.” But, he quips: “I think that was an unintended parallel. Probably [the writers] were like, ‘Let’s just make a sexy, bloody Harry Potter.’ Instead, they’re holding the mirror up to the headlines.”
The show, of course, deals in life-and-death stakes, but cast and crew were forced to brave a reallife tragedy when co-star Chance Perdomo, who played master of magnetism Andre, died in a motorcycle crash between seasons. Yet co-creator Eric Kripke et al. found a way to not just honour the character and the actor, but make his heroism the driving force of season two. “I would say Andre is the heart of this season.” says Broadway. “Chance

is the most amazing human you’ll ever meet and I’m so grateful for the creative team to carry on his essence. Chance himself brought everything you love about Andre: the charisma, the heart, the warmth . . . Emma wears something of Andre’s in the final episode that I don’t think people realize. Because, me personally, I was like, ‘Andre’s gonna be a part of the show.’ He’s with us, always.” ■

ver since NCIS audiences discovered that Special Agent Ziva David (Cote de Pablo) had faked her death in the season 13 finale, they started holding out hope that she and her daughter would one day be reunited with NCIS Senior Field Agent Tony DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly). This fall, fans finally received what they’d been asking for. In a 10-episode romp through Europe, viewers caught up with the couple they just want to see settle down.
Just like the NCIS super-fans, former co-stars de Pablo and Weatherly were curious about the fate of Tony and Ziva. But to take a seemingly satisfying conclusion to a complicated love story and start unravelling it, the actors had some
requirements. “We wanted to explore the relationship between Tony and Ziva and be able to give them obstacles so that through these very severe circumstances, they get to really come together and work together for the protection of this child that they have,” says de Pablo. “Now that they’re parents, let’s see what that does to the dynamic, what that does to the relationship and how they navigate that.”
What this meant was shattering the fantasy viewers had of Tony and Ziva having already achieved their happily ever after off-screen.
“I think if you gave people that from the beginning, there’s nowhere to go other than a potential breakup,” says de Pablo.
“It was a lot more interesting to have the characters start the show, having gone through something that is a part of the season-one arc — we flash back

a lot to what has happened these past couple of years between these two people — and let the viewers actually get to see it.”
Being able to move away from the procedural format to serialized storytelling meant that Tony and Ziva’s relationship would finally get its due. It also meant an ability to explore what drew these two characters to each other in the first place. “They’re mirrors of each other, and I think that’s what makes the relationship solid and interesting, fun and dynamic, and at times, ‘Whoa, what’s going on?’ because it becomes too scary,” says de Pablo. “Confronting that fear is a part of acknowledging the relationship itself. I think it’s a terrifying thing for a human being to be acknowledged by another fully, to be able to go into something and be really

vulnerable. Being seen is a terrifying thing for a lot of people, and I think for them, it really is.”
But with age comes growth, and these two are now able to put in some of the meaningful, hard work to make this very special relationship functional. “There are real breakdowns that happen, and there are windows into extreme vulnerabilities that are exposed. We have beautiful explorations of these characters, and they reveal that to each other,” de Pablo explains. “This really beautiful vulnerability is something that was not really explored on the mothership. Now we have the luxury of time and I think fans will like it.”
While moving to a streaming platform meant more creative freedom than de Pablo and Weatherly had previously had on NCIS, it was still important that the spinoff series shared some of the qualities of the original. As Weatherly muses: “I remember somebody asking, ‘Why do you think NCIS is resonating around the world?’ and it’s because of the family structure that is inside the show. You have Mark Harmon as this stern, stoic

father figure with a tragic backstory and the rest of us trying to get his approval. So, when you’re revisiting these characters, you have to have that feeling that you gave people from the original story. How are we going to do that? Well, we had the gift of a new family dynamic, this triangle between Tony and Ziva and [their daughter] Tali (Isla Gie). And that takes maybe a minute for the audience to plug into, but it’s another family dynamic with recognizable roles that you can see yourself in.”
Should the fanbase be hungry for even more romance and danger, Weatherly and de Pablo
are certainly not saying no to a second round of adventures for Tony and Ziva. “For me, when I get to the end of The Spy Who Loved Me, and Barbara Bach and Roger Moore are in the little floating bubble, yeah, you’re done with that version of James Bond, but you damn well want some more James Bond coming in Moonraker,” jokes Weatherly. “This 10-episode arc will be a very satisfying 10-course meal, but you’ll be hungry again soon enough.” Picking up on her co-star’s metaphor, de Pablo adds: “We’d love to cook that meal for you.” ■
When the first season of Scottish crime series Karen Pirie was met with rave reviews, creator Emer Kenny and her lead actress Lauren Lyle experienced the full gamut of emotions. “There was relief, because we put so much of ourselves into it,” says Kenny. “Lauren and I, we absolutely love this show, and we really work ourselves to the bone

Detective Inspector Karen Pirie (Lauren Lyle) takes on an unpredictable missing person case in season two, while juggling the added complication of being the boss.

With a big promotion, a headline-grabbing case and an office romance, the titular Scottish copper is in the thick of it this season, personally and professionally. Star Lauren Lyle and creator Emer Kenny break down the drama.
trying to make it excellent, so you are just hoping that it’s going to have a positive response.” For Lyle, up till then best known for her supporting role on Outlander, it was confirmation of a vibe she already felt on set. “This was both of our first time leading something as actor and writer, and we had this strange feeling where I was like, ‘I think this is going to be really good,’” she says. “For it to pay off was quite magical.”
Yet, ironically, that made returning to work all the harder. “It was daunting,” says Kenny. “As Lauren said, we had a sense of magic from the first one and I was nervous — could I capture that again? I also put a lot of how I felt about the world into the first series, about being a young woman, about what it’s like to be in a male-dominated environment, what I was struggling with in myself, in terms of confidence and speaking up, and I was like, ‘Oh, I’ve said all that, so what do I have left to say?’ It ended up being about [Karen’s] move up to being a boss and having more power and authority, which is also what I was feeling going into the second season.”

After winning the BAFTA Scotland award for Best Actress in Television, Lyle was also feeling the pinch. “You kind of go, ‘Oh my God, I now have to live up to being what everyone is telling me that I am or is expecting me to be.’ That is definitely nerve-racking,” she says. That stress was something Kenny channelled into our protagonist, who gets promoted to Detective Inspector and is tasked with solving one of the biggest missing person cases in U.K. history, a kidnapped oil heiress referred to as the John Paul Getty III of Scotland, and her infant son. “The stakes really go up for Karen,” says Kenny. “She has a lot more power and authority, but then she’s given this big case as well, so expectations have also risen. She gets the big office, loads of personnel to boss around, and she’s just thinking, ‘Gulp, can I do this again?’”
We also find Karen fumbling to navigate a secret relationship with her colleague, DS Phil Parhatka, played by Zach Wyatt. “It’s not just a fun thing anymore, they want to be together, and they could be together, but they’re going to have to navigate not being allowed to talk about it. How do we do that in this stage of life?”
Lyle muses. “I often feel like your late 20s, early 30s, is such a pivotal time in life to start making big decisions.” Indeed, these are the conundrums Kenny enjoys exploring the most in her writing. “If it was up to me, I would just write endless scenes about their relationship, but unfortunately I’m writing a crime show,” she quips. “I get notes that she needs to solve some crime now!”
The show is based on the works of Scottish author Val McDermid, and season two hews to the order of the novels. Yet even if that weren’t the case, Kenny would have picked A Dark Domain as her follow-up to the first season. “Probably not by coincidence — I just had a baby when I started writing it — I just found the kidnapping with a young child really, really terrifying and interesting, in terms of how that would feel,” says Kenny. “I think wherever you can feel that emotion, it’s going to make a great scene and it’s going to make a great show. But this book also has some huge twists, so whoever you think is the villain, it flips and then it flips again, and whoever you think is alive is dead and whoever you think is dead is alive. Even though I probably could have moved to a different book, this one really sang as something that would be a step up from season one and take Karen to the next level.”

“‘The stakes really go up for Karen. She has a lot more power and authority, but then she’s given this big case as well, so expectations have also risen. She gets the big office, loads of personnel to boss around, and she’s just thinking, ‘Gulp, can I do this again?’”
Between Outlander and Karen Pirie, Lyle has now starred in two series that put Scotland on the map for its outstanding TV and film production. Still, the actress doesn’t want to lean too hard into the regional specificity. “Something with Karen that I’ve always loved is that it is set in Scotland and it’s about a Scottish girl, but it doesn’t feel like a Scottish story,” she says. “It feels quite universal in its themes and just happens to be set in Scotland. I have a bit of an aversion to the ‘tartan noir’ thing . . . like,
‘Little Scotland.’ I think it really shows Scotland in quite a sexy way. We’re making something that is Scottish and cool, and the rest of the world have completely jumped onboard with that.” ■

It’s that time of year. Leaves are crisp and colourful, wardrobes are stuffed with chunky knits, and hearty meals-for-two are set at the dining table. And what better way to spend your cozy nights-in with a special someone than to press play on a defining rom-com of our times. Nobody Wants This is back for its second date, dropping 10 swoonworthy new episodes on Thursday.
Kristen Bell and Adam Brody return as the unlikely couple in love: relationship podcaster Joanne Williams and sexy rabbi Noah Roklov. The first season saw them stumble through getting to know each other, weighing their very different backgrounds against their undeniable chemistry, hitting every
speedbump imaginable on that winding road to commitment.
Joanne, an agnostic lifestyle podcaster, unexpectedly fell for Noah, a faithful rabbi whose dedication to the synagogue and its congregants led to a crisis of the heart and the soul. With the

culture clash between Noah’s Jewish family and community, and Joanne’s social circle of unbelievers being the main hurdle in the lovebirds’ fragile relationship, another pitfall popped up via their respective careers.
The podcast that Joanne co-hosts with her sister, Morgan (Justine Lupe), which centres around the two oversharing about their love lives, became a controversial subject at the meeting-his-parents stage for the way the siblings candidly discuss the harsh realities of dating.
Together with her embarrassing lack of knowledge about Jewish culture, Joanne failed to make a positive impression with Noah’s family. A few knee-jerk overcorrections didn’t land her much closer to the Roklovs’ good side, either.
At the same time, Morgan had grown frustrated with Joanne over her lack of commitment to their show and single-minded focus on Noah just as the podcast started to gain traction. A sort of balance was struck in the first season’s finale when the sisters buried the hatchet and Joanne admitted she was not ready to convert to Judaism. Alas, that choice could prove problematic for Noah’s own career goal of becoming his synagogue’s head rabbi . . . a promotion which may not be approved if he’s dating someone outside the faith.

A trailer for the upcoming chapter sees Joanne’s rivalry with Noah’s mother, Bina (Tovah Feldshuh), deepen, the pair staring daggers at each other from opposite ends of the stands at Noah’s Matzah Ballers basketball game. While Joanne

keeps one eye on Bina, more relationship challenges start forming in every other direction. Now that Joanne and Noah have established themselves as an official couple, it is time for everyone in their lives to
“I would say that season one was:
‘Will they, won’t they?’ And season two was: ‘How will they?’”
start asking them what’s next. Marriage, babies and faith compromises are all on the table as Joanne and Noah merge their respective lives over dinner parties and family events. Never one to mince words, Morgan warns Joanne that “the relationship isn’t solid until you’re out of the honeymoon phase.” Indeed, it’s all fun and
games until you’re wondering what your partner is really thinking at a friend’s baby shower. On that note, guesting this season is Gossip Girl star Leighton Meester. Brody’s real-life spouse. She portrays Abby, a childhood nemesis of Joanne’s who has made a name for herself as a mommy influencer. Meanwhile, Arian Moayed reunites with his old Succession co-star Lupe, playing Morgan’s therapist/lover, Dr. Andy. Seth Rogen, who recently took home four Emmys for his work on the debut season of Apple comedy The Studio, also drops by.
Finally, a few Girls alums have signed on for season two. Alex Karpovsky, who played curmudgeon Ray in all six seasons of the HBO hit, guest stars as a rival rabbi. Plus, Girls showrunners Jenni Konner and Bruce Eric Kaplan have taken the day-to-day showrunning reins from creator Erin Foster. Nobody Wants This is, of course, based on Foster’s own interfaith relationship, and the executive producer shared with Deadline in June some insights as to what the writers’ room was ruminating on when crafting this new season. “I learned so much season one, seeing what people grabbed onto. I watched all the TikToks, I saw [the trending phrase] ‘Healthy Love.’ OK, that’s something people really are yearning for — a show about healthy love and meeting someone later in life. That’s something people really grabbed onto. So those were the themes that I made sure we paid attention to, and gave energy to.”
Furthermore, Foster summed up: “I would say that season one was: ‘Will they, won’t they?’ And season two was: ‘How will they?’” ■

Alow-level angel named Gabriel (Keanu Reeves) has been tasked with preventing L.A. motorists from texting while driving. Wishing to teach Arj a lesson of the grass-isn’t-alwaysgreener variety, Gabriel switches Arj’s life with that of wealthy tech investor Jeff (Seth Rogen) so he’ll realize money doesn’t equate with happiness. But there’s a twist: Arj vastly prefers Jeff’s life to his own, and refuses to switch back. Further complications ensue when Gabriel is fired as an angel and made mortal so he can experience what it means to be human — while still trying to sort out the big ol’ mess he created with Arj and Jeff.

QAs dark as life gets for Robbie, he’s also a remarkably upbeat character. Is that an interesting duality to play?
AI think Robbie’s very positive. In a sense, in and of himself, he’s a very light character. I just think he’s in very dark circumstances. Obviously with Robbie, he’s someone who’s coming from a place of loss and now existing in a place of survival in a lot of ways — back up against the wall, I have people I need to take care of and I’m gonna do what I need to do to get that done . . . Can I [as Tom] understand that? I can, and then you’re just trying to bring the truth of that in yourself into the character. I guess that’s our job in a nutshell, is just to bring enough truth from yourself that you can make it come to life. And I felt like I understood Robbie pretty well.
Q Robbie’s story is also splayed across his body, with his tattoos. Can you talk about that aspect of character-building?
A
My favourite was the one that I put on my neck. That’s an exact replica of an Allen Iverson tattoo. Allen Iverson’s a famous basketball player in Philadelphia, and I loved Allen Iverson. I wanted Allen Iverson to be part of Robbie somehow. So I studied all of his tattoos, and I was trying to think of what I could get away with, what would work for both of us. He had that great Chinese symbol on his neck — and it stands for loyalty. So I put that same tattoo in that same spot for Robbie.
Q
The show’s creator, Brad Ingelsby, is widely beloved for Mare of Easttown. What exactly stands out about his writing?
Tom Pelphrey got his start via an Emmy-winning run on soap opera Guiding Light, playing volatile bad boy Jonathan Randall. He’s since gone on to feature prominently in Banshee as reformed neo-Nazi turned deputy Kurt Bunker; in Ozark as Wendy’s wild-card brother Ben; and true-crime miniseries Love & Death as eccentrically brilliant Texas defense attorney Don Crowder

AI just got to hear Brad talk about that yesterday. He was saying that he’ll start with the character, always — and that’s very different than how most writers operate, as far as I understand. Brad’s just daydreaming characters he wants to spend time with and then reverse-engineering a plot to put them in where he can extract the value that drew him to the character in the first place . . . He never sacrifices the characters for the plot, ever — and that happens more often than you’d like [in other shows].
QWe all obviously want success as soon as possible in life. But is there something to be said for getting the opportunity you’re getting now, at this age — having lived the life and had the career that you’ve had?
AYes, I am very grateful to be able to be in this position now and not sooner. You know, I think that especially with what we do as actors, there’s part of your growth
In his most high-profile role to date, the New Jersey native plays Robbie, a blue-collar Pennsylvania family man who moonlights as the leader of a heist crew ripping off drug dealers. After his latest job goes south, Robbie finds himself on the run from both a vicious biker gang and a task force led by a troubled FBI agent (Mark Ruffalo).
in your work that is tied to your growth as a human being. And I feel like I had a lot of learning and growing to do. There are parts of the job now that I feel I understand in a way that I didn’t even 10 years ago, and there are ways in which I can show up now and be present that maybe I couldn’t have done when I was younger.
I would’ve loved the opportunity at 19. My 19-year-old self would be sitting next to me saying, “What are you talking about? We would’ve been great!” [Laughs] And maybe, in the right situation, it would’ve been. But there’s something about going through ups and downs and appreciating things and understanding the things that you can control — and I certainly take those seriously and work very hard — but there are other things you can’t control. So to come to this now, I come with a real sense of appreciation, a real sense of gratitude — understanding what this is and enjoying it.

They are like very tiny powerplants that produce energy in every living cell of our bodies. On average, every cell has 1,500 mitochondria. Can you imagine that for their extremely small size, it’s been said that they produce, gram for gram, 10,000–50,000 times more energy than the sun?
To say that mitochondria are important to human health is grossly understating their role in our

survival. We literally would not be alive without them. They convert our food into energy, so that every other function of our body can occur as it needs to. As we age, our ability to create healthy mitochondria to support our energy demands diminishes. And because about 90% of our cellular energy is produced by mitochondria, this decline can cause significant health issues
