While the prospect of watching a drama set within the world of American politics may seem grim at the moment, that’s not the case with The Diplomat, a show that arrived stunningly good and has only gotten better as the third season arrives this week.
For the uninitiated, Keri Russell stars as Kate Wyler, an American career diplomat whose husband, Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell), is an older, more-experienced and betterconnected career diplomat. The series began with an attack on a British aircraft carrier in the Persian Gulf, killing 41 crew members. To defuse tensions between the two governments over the incident, Kate was appointed U.S. ambassador to the U.K. “Season three flips the chessboard,” showrunner Debora Cahn tells Tudum “In season three, Kate lives the particular nightmare that is getting what you want.” Season two ended with a momentous game-changer when President William Rayburn (Michael McKean) kicked the bucket, bumping veep Grace Penn (Allison Janney) up to POTUS. As viewers already know, however, it was Grace who masterminded the false-flag attack on the
British vessel, in coordination with powerful U.K. politician Meg Roylin (Celia Imrie) — a shady secret known to both Kate and Hal, and unlikely to stay under wraps. “Hal knows and Kate knows that that tidal wave is about to hit Grace, all of our characters and the entire world,” Cahn says.
Meanwhile, this season also promises to be a nostalgic gift for West Wing fans, with Janney’s former co-star Bradley Whitford joining the cast as First Husband Todd Penn.
“Brad was the fantasy version of Todd — for all of us,” Cahn says, while exec producer Janice Williams enthuses that: “Bradley was the perfect addition to what is already a dream cast.”

The fact-based series starring Oscar winner Chastain as a woman who infiltrates and monitors hate groups online was set to hit Apple TV+
on Friday, September 26. But in the wake of political commentator Charlie Kirk’s assassination, Apple decided to delay the premiere indefinitely.
Taking to social media, Chastain noted that while she still values her partnership with Apple, she disagrees with their decision here. Citing the rash of high-profile political attacks over the past five years aimed at both the left and the right, the actress opined: “These incidents, though far from encompassing the full range of violence witnessed in the United States, illustrate a broader mindset that crosses the political spectrum and must be confronted. I’ve never shied away from difficult subjects, and while I wish this show wasn’t so relevant, unfortunately it is. The Savant is about the heroes who work every day to stop violence before it happens, and honouring their courage feels more urgent than ever. While I respect Apple’s decision to pause the release for now, I remain hopeful the show will reach audiences soon.”

Every time I watch the new Matlock series with Kathy Bates, I am reminded of CHiPs from the ’70s, because of the actor who plays her husband. He was in CHiPs, right? He was Jon and Ponch’s boss?
B.L., Burnaby
Yours is a common mistake when it comes to actor Robert Pine, who played Sgt. Joseph Getraer from 1977 to 1983 on the motorcycle cop show set in Southern California. Ever since the new Matlock began last fall, Pine is, reportedly, often mistaken for Sam Anderson — the actor who actually plays Matty’s devoted husband Edwin on the reboot. That said, Mr. Pine has remained a steadily working character actor over the years, popping up on series like Parks and Recreation. And perhaps most famously, he’s the father of movie star Chris Pine. As for CHiPs, the action drama which starred Erik Estrada as Officer Frank Poncherello and Larry Wilcox as Officer Jon Baker, it has enjoyed a new life in reruns. Plenty of fans still exist, and many ask if Jon and Ponch were close pals, as they seemed so tight on the show. Things started out that way, but over time the actors drifted apart, and for no apparent reason, reported animosity brewed which had Estrada decline to invite Wilcox to his wedding. Wilcox returned the favour months later when he married for the third time and did not invite Estrada. Luckily, over the years, they seemed to mend fences. One of the interesting tidbits about the show is that no gun was ever drawn by the two officers, out of respect for the many children who tuned in for Ponch and Jon’s escapades.

For four generations, the Murdaughs were an esteemed, highly affluent pillar of South Carolina’s Lowcountry. That legacy was shattered in 2021 when their latest scion, attorney Alex Murdaugh, was convicted of murdering his wife Maggie and their son Paul. The case swiftly became an international obsession, as an investigation revealed the history of violence, debauchery, corruption and cover-ups that led to this shocking moment.
The life and crimes of the Murdaugh clan have already inspired a docuseries and a Lifetime movie. Now
comes this eight-episode dramatization starring Oscar winner Patricia Arquette as doomed matriarch Maggie and Jason Clarke as murderous patriarch Alex.
This take on the tragedy is based on the Murdaugh Murders Podcast by Mandy Matney, who is played in the series by Brittany Snow (late of The Hunting Wives). Succession’s J. SmithCameron also stars.
Behind the scenes, the was show was co-created by filmmaker Erin Lee Carr, known for her deep dives into true crime via such acclaimed docs as I Love You, Now Die and Mommy Dead and Dearest.

That said, he now owes his dear Watson some answers.

Loosely based on a true story, this new Argentine flick follows Martha (Marilú Marini), a wealthy lady whose increasingly eccentric ways lead her daughters to ship dear old mom off to a psychiatric facility, where a doctor (Daniel Hendler) must decide whether she’s losing her mind or just living life to the fullest.
Making her debut in a seasontwo episode of Fire Country, Sheriff Mickey Fox (Morena Baccarin) now leads this spinoff, also set in the Northern California town of Edgewater — where wildfires apparently aren’t the only things raging out of control.
As we pick back up with Mickey in tonight’s premiere, she catches a disturbing case of child abuse that leads to “a high-stakes rescue and a cliffside standoff that could cost lives.”
But Edgewater’s criminal underworld isn’t the only source of intrigue in our heroine’s life. Her teen daughter Skye (Degrassi alum Amanda Arcuri) is newly sober, and struggling to stay that way; but her relationship with a troubled young man could send her spiralling. And alas, Mickey’s father Wes (Deadwood’s W. Earl Brown) is a drug dealer. “They’ve surrounded this woman that is fiercely black-and-white about what’s right and wrong with these characters who are very grey,” Baccarin told TV Insider. “Skye is struggling with drug addiction, and

Showrunner Matt Lopez added that the show is “very much a salute to small towns,” before musing: “What is it like to police a community in which you know everyone and everyone knows you? In part, that’s Mickey’s superpower. But we’ll also see that it can be a little bit of a blind spot for her.”
Rounding out the cast are Friday Night Lights alum Matt Lauria as Mickey’s partner Boone, who’s more of a “shoot first” type; Sabrina the Teenage Witch’s Caroline Rhea as Gina, her quirky assistant; and Covert Affairs’ Christopher Gorham as Travis, her ex-husband/current lawyer. And tonight, Fire Country’s Max Thieriot (a.k.a. Bode) guest-stars in the pilot.
Among the most iconic and influential children’s authors who’s ever laid a pen to paper, Roald Dahl offers readers a rare combination of darkness and sweetness. Now, one of Dahl’s lesser known (but no less worthy) texts is adapted for the screen in allnew animated flick The Twits. But when the Twits rise to power in their town, two brave orphans and a family of magical animals are forced to become as tricky as the Twits in order to save the city. our times about the never-ending battle between cruelty and empathy.”
The first-rate voice cast includes Natalie Portman, Emilia Clarke, Margo Martindale, Alan Tudyk and Nicole Byer. Meanwhile, Talking Heads frontman David Byrne crafted three original songs for the film.
Writing and directing the animated shenanigans is Oscar nominee Phil Johnston, of Ralph Breaks the Internet fame. Speaking with Tudum, Johnston mused: “I’ve always been attracted to reprehensible characters. I don’t know what this says about me, and I really don’t want to look into it. I love the Twits and their terrible tricks. I love that they lack self-awareness and personal hygiene and any inkling of human decency. And I love this movie because it reminds us that twits like the Twits, whose default emotions are anger and vengeance, can’t be allowed to win in our world.”

or nine seasons, The Office was a workplace comedy that mined chuckles from the soul-crushing banality of its workplace. Now, DMV doubles (perhaps even triples) down on that approach, taking us inside East Hollywood’s Department of Motor Vehicles, where “quirky and lovable characters are making minimum wage, doing a thankless job where customers are annoyed before they even walk in the door.” Those characters include: “Colette (Harriet Dyer), a driving examiner with a big heart and bad boundaries; Gregg (Tim Meadows), a misanthropic former English teacher; Vic (Tony Cavalero), a former bouncer who loves
putting difficult drivers in their places; Barbara (Molly Kearney), a newly promoted manager who tries hard but often misses the mark; Noa (Alex Tarrant), a charming surfer who seems destined for much greater things; and Ceci (Gigi Zumbado), a scrappy photographer who isn’t afraid to speak her mind.”

Reno guru Kristen Coutts talks saving money without skimping on quality
QWhat are some misconceptions about renovating on your own?
APeople think it’s a lot more complicated than it actually is. I think there is a fear around power tools. I think there is this stigma that things are always gonna go wrong and then cost a fortune. I think there is also a myth that things have to cost a fortune. Those barriers stop people from even trying . . . When you break things down step by step, each individual step is not that difficult. But when you go, “Oh my gosh, I have to remodel an entire kitchen,” it becomes too daunting.
QWhat makes your series stand out in this very crowded genre?
AIt’s showing people that you can have a beautiful, functional space with very minimal amounts of money. What I find really different about this show is the very tangible steps and tools and tricks. People can watch an episode and then that same day go and do it in their own home. That attainability and that affordability just makes it so much more tangible.

Do you have a philosophy for evaluating a space?

QLooking back on your early social media videos, when you yourself were still learning, is it surreal to see just how far you’ve come?
AI mean, before I started, I’d never hung a painting before. I didn’t know how to use a stud finder. It’s almost like these projects build upon themselves. You start with something like painting a single wall, and it’s always scary before you do it. Then you go, “Oh, that wasn’t so bad. Let me try the next thing.” It’s really interesting to watch the progression over time of not knowing how to use a stud finder to demo-ing walls and building something new.

Two of reality TV’s most iconic (and most controversial) franchises join forces for this special limited series.
Looking at the title, you may assume the show involves various Housewives trading one man/mansion for another. But no, it’s much juicier than that. Rather, across four hourlong episodes, four ladies from the sprawling Housewives empire will trade places with an average woman who lives anything but a life of luxury.
“Through unexpected conflicts, eye-opening moments and emotional breakthroughs, the journey challenges everything they thought they knew about themselves and the world
around them,” teases the press release. “Through this process, the Real Housewives will question if they can appreciate the lives they left behind and conversely, the real wives will question whether the aspirational lives showcased on reality TV are truly as glamorous as they appear.”
The Housewives in question include Emily Simpson (Orange County), Dr. Wendy Osefo (Potomac), Melissa Gorga (New Jersey) and Angie Katsanevas (Salt Lake City). Tonight’s premiere is all about Angie, as the Type-A fashionista swaps with off-the-grid homesteader Lindsay Flake, and must adjust to a family that lives with neither electricity nor running water.

Osbourne and his family speak candidly about how the late-night fall he suffered in February 2019 changed everything, forcing him to cancel his two-and-a-half-year farewell tour and sending him into a deep depression. “He was in hospital for weeks,” says daughter Aimee Osbourne. “To fall like that and not be able to bounce back like he had in the past, and then having to cancel the tour — that was his biggest heartbreak.” The film goes on to detail the numerous
corrective surgeries Ozzy underwent, revealing how his escalating health issues, the progressive effects of his Parkinson’s diagnosis and ongoing chronic pain impacted his mental health and informed the music he made during this period. It was “Take What You Want,” the Andrew Watt-produced collaboration with Post Malone that lifted him up, propelling the rock icon to produce his final two albums: the acclaimed Ordinary Man and Patient Number 9, representing some of the most reflective work of his career. “I do think that Ordinary Man is less an Ozzy Osbourne album and more a John Osbourne album,” says son Jack Osbourne. “There’s a lot of themes in it [where he is] processing his own life and mortality and what he’s facing.”

TV Stations regularly promote their shows on their channel, and will refer to show times in their specific time zone. For example, a station that is located in the east may only promote their program in eastern time. Also, sometimes U.S. Stations will promote programs on their affiliate stations that are not available in Canada. These types of promo ads may conflict with the listings in TV Week because we list programs in our Pacific Time Zone on stations available only in our market area. Therefore, please follow the listings in TV Week for correct listings information.

I Think You Should Leave mastermind Tim Robinson returns with another uniquely unhinged comedy, this one about a troubled man who thinks he’s uncovered a dark conspiracy at the heart of . . . an office furniture supplier
Few comedians emerging over the past decade have proven so fresh or confoundingly delightful as Tim Robinson. After cutting his teeth during a less-thansuccessful stint on Saturday Night Live (as a performer for one season in 2012-’13, then bumped to the writers’ room for three more), the Michigan native went on to find his groove with cultishly adored sitcom Detroiters in 2017. That was followed by his true career-launcher, Netflix’s cringey sketch sensation I Think You Should Leave, from 2019-2023.
As Detroiters co-star Sam Richardson said of Robinson in a 2023 New York Times profile: “His cadence is so specifically his own. You can’t teach it. It’s incredibly human. It’s human beyond human.”
And indeed, even though his career got off to a bumpy start, those early struggles only proved that Robinson is at his best when given free rein over his own material — as opposed to adapting his singular voice for the pre-existing mold of something like SNL.
Which brings us to The Chair Company — which viewers can slide into starting this weekend on HBO. Reuniting behind the scenes with his I Think You Should Leave cohort Zach Kanin, the series casts Robinson as William Ronald Trosper (“Ron” to his friends), a perfectly stable husband and father living a perfectly normal life. In the trailer, his boss (Lou Diamond Phillips) enthusiastically gives Ron a big promotion during a work event; Ron’s wife, Barb (Lake Bell of Childrens Hospital ), toasts his accomplishments over a celebratory family dinner; and his
home life with kids Natalie (Sophia Lillis, IT ) and Seth (Will Price, Goosebumps) seems nothing if not pleasant-enough.
But after a sudden, embarrassing incident at the office, things change. We see the beginnings of a tailspin as Ron calls the hotline of National Business Solutions, the company that supplies his office furniture, after detecting a problem with their product — “a big problem,” he assures the customer service rep. From there, it’s not long before he’s tumbling down the rabbit hole, coming to believe he’s in the middle of a vast criminal conspiracy operating under the mere guise of an office furniture supplier. (Indeed, he soon upgrades his assessment from “big problem” to “massive problem that could cause mass casualties.”)
“There’s a darkness to you, Ron,” a well-meaning co-worker tells him. Meanwhile, Barb starts to question the odd hours he keeps — and whether the man she married is hiding something from her, as this new investigative hobby sends him on late-night trespassing missions
“His cadence is so specifically his own. You can’t teach it. It’s incredibly human. It’s human beyond human.”
accompanied by fellow conspiracy theorist Mike Santini (Joseph Tudisco, A Brooklyn Love Story).
As in his other endeavours, Robinson spins life’s mundanities into explosively awkward encounters — rooted, this time, in the isolation and loneliness of obsession — all the while crafting an oddball character that’s oddly empathetic.
Robinson has said very little about the show publicly, but did offer a little tease to Collider at the Toronto International Film Fest in 2024: “When we started working on it, we realized how far it could go and how big it could become,” he said, before elaborating: “You don’t think of the idea and say, ‘OK, this could be one season, this could be two seasons or this could be three seasons.’ It’s just, as you work on it, then it builds into whatever it’s gonna be.” If that creative journey sounds similar to Ron’s conspiratorial spiral . . . well, it’s probably not a coincidence. ■
Ethan Hawke teams with Reservation Dogs creator Sterlin Harjo for this neo-noir dramedy about one hard-charging “truthstorian” who stumbles on a murder mystery connected to a powerful Oklahoma family
Tuesday, 6 p.m., 7 p.m. & 9 p.m., FX Canada; Wednesday, Disney+
From the man who created a show that defied genre in its equal parts hilarious and profound depiction of Indigenous teenagers in Oklahoma, it makes sense that Sterlin Harjo’s follow-up to Reservation Dogs would also defy expectations of a traditional noir. In The Lowdown, Ethan Hawke (who guest-starred on Reservation Dogs) leads an impressive ensemble as Tulsa “truthstorian” Lee Raybon, whose obsession with a possible murder mystery lands him in deep trouble. “Tulsa felt like the right place to set a noir,” says Harjo. “In noir, we’ve explored Los Angeles, New York City, even New Orleans. But there’s so much political and cultural activity happening in the middle of the country and Tulsa has the right amount of grit, the right amount of history, the right amount of secrets, to set this story in.”
Hawke, whose relationship with Harjo started a few years prior to Reservation Dogs, was eager to return to Oklahoma for the next phase of their collaboration, this time as a citizen journalist who follows his conviction despite its inability to make ends meet. “I’m always drawn to people who really want to follow their dreams,” the actor explains. “It’s easy to say to kids, but when you get into adult life, with all the responsibilities that you’re met with, a lot of people compromise those things. Lee doesn’t, but there’s a price to be paid, and that largely shows up in his relationship with his family and his daughter.”
Indeed, from a personal standpoint, Hawke was very much able to relate to his character. “As somebody who has been chasing his dreams his whole life, it’s a fine
balance to be the parent you want to be and the human being you want to be,” he says. “Sometimes they don’t seem to line up.” He also loved the moral complexity that came with Lee’s hunt for truth. “I love the expression ‘truthstorian,’ first of all, because it’s not really a word,” says Hawke. “It expresses a true thing for Lee, which is that the intersection of truth and history is so needed. Without understanding where we come from, we don’t understand where we are. But it’s also sloppy and a trainwreck of an expression. It’s hard to say [out loud], and it seemed very perfect for Lee.”
The series co-stars Twin Peaks’ Kyle MacLachlan and Big Love’s Jeanne Tripplehorn as gubernatorial candidate Donnie Washberg and his sister-in-law Betty Jo, whose family member’s suicide sets Lee’s Spidey Sense a-tinglin’. Tripplehorn, a Tulsa native, enjoyed playing a character that toes the line between loss and hidden motives. “Betty Jo’s a survivor. She comes from a very small town in Oklahoma. She may
or may not have been a stripper, but she was definitely a rodeo queen and she’s kind of a hellcat,” says Tripplehorn. “The bottom line is, she’s going to survive at any cost.”
In the series, Betty Jo is suspiciously close to brother-inlaw Donnie, who may have had something to do with his brother Dale’s (Tim Blake Nelson) death. As MacLachlan muses: “The expectation is he’s ‘The Heavy’ [a character that provides the most
conflict in a story], because he’s got so much to lose, and because of Ethan’s questioning and his digging into my family. But one of the beauties of the script is that, as we go along, we feel more and more that here’s a guy who’s just doing what he needs to do, and that he’s struggling against his family being exposed. That turns him into a real fighter.”
After working with Harjo, MacLachlan compares the writerdirector to late director (and Twin Peaks creator) David Lynch, with whom the actor collaborated frequently for over three decades. “David’s worlds are singular and specific, and I felt like the world of The Lowdown is singular and specific,” he says. “There was an
“The Lowdown is full of wit and humour and silliness, and it’s got an undercurrent of a really honest conversation about who we are and how we can intersect with each other and hold multiple truths at the same time.”
atmosphere of joy, fun and creativity working with David Lynch, that I also felt working with Sterlin. And there was always room for growth and improvement. Working with David, the script would change, situations would change, lines would change, things would be transposed. Working with Sterlin, it’s the same way. There were many more similarities than differences between the two.”
Hawke, meanwhile, praises Harjo’s commitment to community, be it the people of Tulsa or his own film crew. “They all know each other. There’s a safety net underneath everybody. Everybody’s been through struggles and survived them, and you feel that when you walk on set — and that gives me a lot of confidence,” he says of Harjo’s crew. “I sensed it was a place where we might be able to do something original.” The distinct universe that the Oklahoman creator has built also struck a chord with the actor. “The Lowdown is full of wit and humour and silliness, and it’s got an undercurrent of a really honest conversation about who we are and how we can intersect with each other and hold multiple truths at the same time,” says Hawke. “The role of journalism, the ways that we tell our community stories and the way we create a narrative of our lives and of our community, it just couldn’t be more important.” ■
Judge Mijune Pak chews the fat with TV Week about a forthcoming 12th season of Top Chef Canada she believes to be the most competitive yet
Tuesday, 7 p.m. & 10 p.m., Flavour Network
Top Chef Canada judge Mijune Pak is about to pop. No, not from overdoing it on delicacies created by contestants on season 12 of this hit reality show. Pak is going
to give birth to her first child at any moment, possibly even during our call. While the vast variety of culinary offerings keeps the gig fresh for the celebrity foodie year after year, this season was truly unique. “I was only six weeks pregnant [when we started pre-production], and I was like, ‘I’m going to have to tell them,’ ” says Pak.
“Luckily, I had no nausea. I was a little bit nervous because I want to try everything — otherwise it’s not going to be fair — but I continued eating everything, and it was fine.”
With Baby Pak’s gastronomical preferences thankfully matching mom’s, the focus was then firmly on the kitchen battle itself. “We’ve had really strong competitors throughout the years, but this year is next-level,” she says. “Casting did a phenomenal job. I’m really, really impressed with the calibre of chefs that we have.”
On that note, we spoke to Pak about what to expect from this levelled-up season.
I can’t help but ask, how did pregnancy affect your sense of taste?
I had no real cravings or food aversions. The first trimester, I honestly don’t know how I would’ve done it. There’s no chance. I would’ve just barfed everything up because I was so nauseous. The second trimester, I was totally fine. And I was so happy about that, because I would feel so guilty if I couldn’t do the job well. There’s so much on the line: people’s lives, $100,000, plus future opportunities for all these chefs. I can’t be so selfish as to do this and not do it justice. So, I was really happy that everything was fine.
Other than your personal circumstances, what feels fresh about this season?
We’re super-excited for this year. There were contestants I would think would probably rather be a judge. I was kind of thinking, “I am not sure what the chances are we’d be able to get these kinds of people.” But the cast, oh my gosh, wait until you see it. It’s so impressive. I was so happy. I’m lucky that I get to dine not just in Vancouver, so I was familiar
with quite a few of those faces, but it’s like, “Oh my God, you got this person, you got that person!”
So, it’s almost like a celebrity edition of Top Chef Canada?
For me, I think so. They might be more famous locally, but I think this is going to be an amazing platform to really skyrocket their careers to the next level.
For contestants who are already established in the culinary world, what do you think is the appeal of going on this show?
I think it’s for the Canadian food scene to be really recognized. “Canadian food scene” sounds very vague, but I find that everybody has their unique interpretation of it. There is Indigenous food, local cuisine, but also so much personality, so much heritage, so much culture, and everybody has a different story. I feel like people are ready to present their version of what Canadian cuisine is and
represent the country — beyond just your restaurant — on a national platform and stage.
Have you seen the talent of the contestants rise every year?
Yes, but I definitely think that there’s something special about this year. This year, there was no clear winner [from the outset]. Sometimes you have some front runners and then you start seeing them winning every episode. But this year was just so fierce. It’s crazy.
Your fellow judge, Mark McEwan, says he picks a winner in the first episode of every year. Do you think he did?
He does say that. I can’t say if he was right or wrong this year, but I can say that you’re as good as your last dish. So really, if you have a bad day, you can be voted out for that and then it’ll be anyone’s game. It doesn’t really matter if you have a favourite, they have to be good every single episode.
How have the challenges ramped up?
I feel like our creative team that designs the challenges, they really try to stay relevant to what’s going on in the culinary scene and what the current trends are. They try to really feed into that to keep this show fresh, relevant and hot.
What are the trends right now in Canadian gastronomy?
There’s a lot of diversity there, celebrating the heritage you come from rather than trying to all cook French food, more or less. A lot of the chefs are trained from that background, but trying to showcase other ingredients and other techniques from other cultures is continuously on the rise now that people are looking for something they haven’t seen or tasted before. Bringing in the diverse cultures of Canada, I think, has become something that’s here to stay.
How have you evolved during the eight years you’ve been on this show?
Oh my gosh, I almost feel like I grew up on that show. It’s like my family now, the producers and my co-judges. In terms of the structure of the show, I’ve always been comfortable, but I do think I feel a sense of responsibility and a duty to expand my knowledge, education and palate, even more, seeing how diverse the chefs are getting. There are certain dishes or ethnic backgrounds that I’m less familiar with, and there’s always more to learn. So, I feel like I better start reading the books, going to more of those restaurants, so that I can better interpret their food and their story and find those connections rather than just eating it and being like, “Does it taste good?”
How do you go about equally judging such a vast range of cooking?
I think that’s really tricky. We’ve had previous years, too, where someone’s cooking “homestyle” kind of food. We had one season where we had a chef, Monika, and
“I can say that you’re as good as your last dish. So really, if you have a bad day, you can be voted out for that and then it’ll be anyone’s game. It doesn’t really matter if you have a favourite, they have to be good every single episode.”
her style was so different because it was her mother’s recipes, her grandmother’s recipes, these Egyptian street food dishes — next to people that were from this fine dining background, used to tasting menus. That was really hard for us to put into context. And in the end, we have to approach it from, “Does it taste good?” while being considerate to the cultural background it’s coming from. And then we’ll have to dive into presentation. We’ll have to dive into creativity, personality, the chef. We’ll have to dive into technique, because sometimes you can’t cheat technique. And this year, the calibre is so high, we were literally splitting hairs.
Do you think the series has expanded the palate of the average audience member?
I certainly hope so. I think that’s definitely one of our goals. I wish the show could be three hours long, because then we could really get into the context of the dishes and how to prepare it. Top Chef in France, I think, is three hours long. And I think that ever since we’ve included different types of cuisines, people have become more curious to try these restaurants. So, I definitely hope it continues to spark the interest for food — and having the general public champion these people who work so hard in their kitchens every day. ■
With season nine just underway, star Oliver Stark digs into the absurdities and profundities of 9-1-1 ’s very particular brand of procedural drama — while also unpacking the loss of fearless fiefihter leader Bobby Nash (Peter Krause) last year
9-1-1
Thursday, 8 p.m., Global & ABC
It’s among the most delightfully unpredictable dramas on TV. From killer bees to pirates on cruise ships to the show itself suddenly moving from Fox to ABC, viewers never quite know
what to expect from the cops, paramedics and firefighters of 9-1-1. And certainly, nothing could have prepared us for the loss of Bobby Nash (Peter Krause) late in the show’s eighth season, when the LAFD Station 118 captain was fatally infected amidst a biolab explosion. As one of the show’s original
cast members, his death is nothing less than seismic — and still being felt in season nine. Among the characters feeling it the deepest is Bobby’s longtime mentee, Evan “Buck” Buckley (Oliver Stark) — a reckless kid whom Nash molded into a stalwart fireman. “I think it can go in one of two directions,”
Stark tells TV Week of how Bobby’s death will affect Buck. “We can go in the direction of him wanting to almost step into the shoes of Bobby, take those lessons that Bobby has taught him over the years and really double down. Or, the other route is that it can completely unsettle him. Bobby has been such a source of stability and was his rock within the 118, so removing that important pillar may send him spiralling in the wrong direction as well.”
Of course, as Buck was losing Bobby, Stark was losing Krause. “We are still friends,” the London-born actor continues. “But when you are making a TV show, you see those people more than you see anybody else in your life. They do become your family. So, the truth is that we’ll see
him and speak to him less than the past eight years. And that’s really sad, because Peter’s been an important figure in my life. But he’s been really great about reminding myself and the rest of the cast that, ‘Hey guys, I’m fine in real life! We can continue to be friends.’ He’s very much as Bobby is for the 118. He’s been a great leader and a great calming force in all of our lives throughout this loss.”
One of 9-1-1’s hallmarks during its run has been delivering not only those dramatic, tear-jerking moments, but utter absurdity to boot. “A real gift that 9-1-1 offers as an actor is that you are playing the same character, but you get to play all these different genres. There are really funny episodes and then there are these really dramatic episodes and then
there are these really stunt-heavy action episodes. So, I’ve gotten to try my hand at all these different styles of acting,” Stark muses. “To be honest, not even just episode to episode — sometimes scene to scene. You can be laughing at the beginning of the episode and think, ‘This is ridiculous!’ and then you can be crying by the end of the episode. It really does do all that, sometimes within one 42-minute episode.”
That wondrous surreality stems, at least in part, from the emergenciesof-the-week . . . which are actually less outlandish than you might think. “This show is a constant reminder that life is stranger than fiction,” the actor marvels. “I think the strength of the show in some sense is that we do lean as far as we can into those almost-ludicrous scenarios — but often the wildest ones are the ones that are based in reality.”
Yet beyond just pounding the pulse, 9-1-1 has also offered a platform for representation, having a profound impact on fans — and, in turn, on Stark. “One of the things that sticks with me the most is, Buck went through an arc in season seven, and obviously continuing now, where he discovered his bisexuality. Having people come up to me and speak very specifically about seeing themselves represented in that story of finding their sexuality later in life — not as a teenager, not in their early 20s, but in their 30s and onwards — and feeling like they hadn’t seen too much of that specific representation [on TV] . . . that’s really meant a lot to me over the years.” ■

QWas it interesting to play a priest, and try to find the humanity beneath a person who is, literally, holier than thou?
AYeah, they’re kind of these figureheads . . . It’s like the actors of the Hollywood Golden Age, where you watch them and you feel like you know them. But once they’re off-screen — because no social media back then — you have no idea who they really were. And that’s kind of like a priest, because it is a performance; they do their sermons and then once they disappear off into their rectory, who actually are they? How do you play that — someone who, in front of people, is very buttoned-up, but actually he’s a human being, and comes with all the same flaws a human being comes with.
QThe author of the novel, Richard Coles, has an interesting background — a pop star who became a priest . . .
ARichard’s just a fascinating person. He’s lived many lives. If you get a chance to read his autobiography, Fathomless Riches, it’s lots of sex, drugs and pop music the very antithesis of what you imagine a man of the cloth would be engaged in. And then he found God in the early 2000s, but still keeps so much of that irreverence about him . . . Richard himself will say one of the reasons why he became a reverend is that he’s always been addicted to being famous, and people hanging onto his every word.
Q Why is it that priests make for such effective and appealing crime-solvers in so many books and TV series?
No doubt, Matthew Lewis enjoyed a truly magical start to his career, co-starring in the Harry Potter flicks as lovable loser turned unexpected hero Neville Longbottom. It was an eight-film adventure that took him all the way from the age of 11 into adulthood. Since then, Lewis has appeared in hit rom-coms like Me Before You and Baby Done, as well as guesting on TV series like All Creatures Great and Small
AI’ve tried to answer this question myself. I mean, the detective [Amit Shah] sees me as kind of a useful tool in the beginning, because I’m someone who knows everyone, knows their intimate secrets — which obviously are under the sanctity of confession, but still he’s aware of them and is someone who gets people to relax their defenses, perhaps? Someone who can catch people in a lie by mistake because of his earnestness.
But also, I was thinking about how priests and clergy, they’re inherently locked up with death and the Beyond and the spirituality of it all. I think that also plays its part in why authors and screenwriters seem to think of them when they think of murder.
QYou got started in acting very young, but when did you actually decide it was going to be your occupation, not just a fun thing you did as a kid?
AI went back and forth. I mean, all throughout Harry Potter, obviously
The native of Leeds headlines this six-part mystery about young priest Daniel Clement, whose sleepy English village is rocked by a shocking death. And as we all know from series like Grantchester, the local holy man can be uniquely situated to unravel a small-town mystery.
you’re in this big movie, but it’s a big machine and you can quite easily at times — not always, but just at times — get lost in that machine. There are weeks and months on end where I was just set dressing; I was in the background. And you’re sitting there going, “I could be at school, so this is great, but I’m actually kind of bored.” I was like, “Is this really what I want to do?” And I toyed around with all kinds of things; I thought I might want to be a pilot. I want to be a doctor. I want to be a police officer.
But [acting] is a bit like golf, actually, in that you will say, “I’m not enjoying it,” because you played rubbish on the course. And then you have a scene when it’s all about you — or you hit a great shot — and you go, “This is the best feeling ever!” You’re always chasing that a little bit. So, coming out of Harry Potter, it was, “OK, well, I’ve had a taste of that with Neville in the last movie doing big, big moments and working with Ralph Fiennes and blowing up bridges. I would like more of that.”
Food, at its core, is beautifully simple. Good quality, whole ingredients can be transformed into something wild and magical when flavours collide. It awakens the senses, transports us through space and time, and turns the ordinary into the extraordinary. It taps into our deepest emotions and reminds us of who we are and how we love.
Choosing whole foods doesn’t mean going without. It means leaning in and getting curious. It means trading the processed and predictable for naturally delicious and playful. A chance to explore colour, texture, and flavour at their peak, alive with the taste of season and story.
A cut of meat you’ve never tried, a fruit rind you thought was trash, or a homemade sauce so good, it becomes your new signature. Cooking this way invites play and discovery, and it keeps your mind wildly aware and your connection to the natural world beautifully intact.

They are like very tiny powerplants that produce energy in every living cell of our bodies. On average, every cell has 1,500 mitochondria. Can you imagine that for their extremely small size, it’s been said that they produce, gram for gram, 10,000–50,000 times more energy than the sun?
To say that mitochondria are important to human health is grossly understating their role in our
survival. We literally would not be alive without them. They convert our food into energy, so that every other function of our body can occur as it needs to. As we age, our ability to create healthy mitochondria to support our energy demands diminishes. And because about 90% of our cellular energy is produced by mitochondria, this decline can cause significant health issues
