DAVID ATTENBOROUGH RELIVES LIFE ON EARTH
Back in 1976, David Attenborough set off on a mission to produce a television documentary like no other, an endeavour that sent him and his camera crew on a three-year odyssey that spanned the globe as they travelled to 40 countries to film mo e than 600 different animal species in order to tell “the greatest story in all the world” by detailing how life evolved on Planet Earth.
The result was 1979’s Life on Earth: A Natural History, an innovative and unprecedented series that raised the bar for what a nature documentary could achieve while leaving viewers absolutely spellbound.
Fifty years after production began, and in celebration of Sir David’s 100th birthday, this special looks back on the making of Life on Earth, revealing a fascinating story that’s just as compelling as the docuseries that resulted. Attenborough and his original crew share their memories of their extraordinary journey, recounting some of the many challenges they encountered along the way — which included a coup in the Comoros, narrowly avoiding gunfie in Rwanda and being threatened by Saddam Hussein’s army in Iraq.
The special also delves into the innovations developed by Attenborough and his crew, combining cutting-edge camera technologies that were just emerging at the time. This included the utilization of time-lapse, microphotography and filming speeds of up to 1,000 frames per second, allowing the movement of animals to be captured in ways that had never before been seen.

Based on Gilbert Shelton’s underground comic book The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers, this animated comedy returns for a third season to continue the whacked-out exploits of hippie trio Freewheelin’ Franklin Freek (voiced by Woody Harrelson), Phineas T. Phreakears (Pete Davidson) and Fat Freddy Freekowtski (John Goodman) — and let’s not forget Fat Freddy’s sardonic cat, Kitty (Tiffan Haddish). As the logline for the new season indicates, the weed-loving weirdos will be embarking on a series of unexpected escapades: “Now that Franklin, Phineas Freddy and Kitty are small business owners running their own pot shop, they’re proving that you can’t spell CEO without THC . . . OK, maybe that’s not quite right. The point is, their hairy, harebrained misadventures take them from Colombia, where they get mixed up with the cartel, to 1980s Hollywood, and all the way into a futuristic dystopian hellscape — it’s a far-out trip, man.”

Are they planning to cancel any more of the NCIS shows, like they did with New Orleans and L.A.?

As already reported, the Paramount+-exclusive NCIS: Tony & Ziva has been axed. But every iteration of the naval cop franchise that aired on CBS this season will return. That includes Origins, Sydney and the proverbial flagshi, NCIS What’s more, there will be a new series in the fleet this fall: NCIS: New York, led by LL Cool J’s Sam Hanna — who starred in the now-defunct NCIS: Los Angeles. Per Deadline, the show sees Hanna return to his hometown of NYC, where he partners with a roguish agent played by Hawaii Five-0 alum Scott Caan. It was created by The Pitt’s R. Scott Gemmill, who previously captained NCIS: L.A. for a number of seasons.
An Irreplaceable Loss
I’ve been checking out Dan Levy’s Netflix show Big Mistakes], and it just made me all nostalgic for Schitt’s Creek. Any chance of a reboot?

Ever since the internationally beloved Canadian sitcom’s farewell in 2020, creator/star Levy has kept the door open for a Rose family reunion.
Alas, after the sudden passing of matriarch Catherine O’Hara, he’s put a definitiv kibosh on the idea.
The actor/writer recently made his first return-visit t Goodwood, Ontario, where Schitt’s Creek filmed its si seasons, for a special interview with CBS’s Sunday Morning
Touring the town proved to be a tearful affai, as Levy, voice occasionally breaking, admitted to host Anthony Mason: “It’s tough being back . . . It’s a lot of memories, with Catherine.”
Asked directly if he could envision doing a follow-up that reunited him with onscreen sister Annie Murphy and onscreen/real-life father Eugene Levy now that onscreen mom O’Hara has passed, Dan said, simply enough: “No, not now. You can’t.”
Appearing on the Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend podcast, Levy furthermore eulogized: “. . . she’s impossible not to love and it’s impossible not to laugh with her in anything she does. It is an unimaginable loss. She was just an irreplaceable talent and an irreplaceable person.”
LL Cool J and Scott Caan have signed up to lead NCIS: New York, coming to CBS Tuesday nights this fall.

As ever, NBC stalwart Law & Order: Special Victims Unit is safe, having recently been greenlit for a 28th season — continuing its streak as the longest-running primetime drama ever.

Jaws was portrayed by actor Richard Kiel, who stood seven-foot-one, and was among the very few villains to appear in two Bond films. fter The Spy Who Loved Me (1977), he was brought back for Moonraker (1979), starring opposite Roger Moore as Bond both times. The character, known for his metal teeth, actually appeared in another movie prior to the 007 films using the same steely-mouthed gimmick, as a gold-toothed villain named Rease who is on the hunt for Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder in the 1976 action-thriller Silver Streak.
Kiel appeared in many films and TV series, and also wrote three books. In one, an autobiography, he stated that he was often confused with actor Ted

But the fate of most recent spinoff Organized Crime has been sealed. The drama, which saw former SVU star Christopher Meloni return as Detective Elliot Stabler to head up a mob-busting unit for the NYPD, isn’t getting a sixth season.
In a video posted to his personal Instagram page, Meloni, tears in his eyes, reflected: “I just saw tha they announced Organized Crime won’t be coming back.

Digging into his CV, Kiel played three different characters over tw seasons of the original Star Trek and appeared as Bigfoot in an episode of The Six Million Dollar Man. He also played the lead alien in a classic 1963 episode of The Twilight Zone called “To Serve Man.”
That said, what could have been his most memorable role was actually one he decided to turn down — that of Chewbacca in the Star Wars flics. He didn’t like the furry costume and felt wearing a mask would hinder his performance; so, he chose to duke it out with James Bond instead.
I wanted to take this moment to say thank you to the fans who not only helped give the character of Elliot Stabler life and longevity, but for sticking with him and welcoming him back. It was a good ride . . . I had a great time playing him. It was a great ride. Thank you. You helped give me a career that I never dreamed of, nearly 17 odd years.”
He got a little moral support from longtime pal Mariska Hargitay, who was partnered up with Stabler on SVU in its 1999 debut and continued to be so until Meloni’s departure
from the series in 2011. In the comments section of Meloni’s aforementioned Instagram, she posted “P4L” [Partners for Life], alongside a heart emoji.
Indeed, Meloni and Hargitay have remained good buds — which has given fans reason to hope that, just because Organized Crime is over, doesn’t mean Stabler will turn in his badge and gun. The fan-fave character has guested on SVU multiple times in recent years, and could perhaps be coaxed into doing so again by his TV work wife!

The Demons in My Head
It’s among the most critically acclaimed horror series of TV’s modern golden age. But rather than mere jump-scares, The Terror has been an exercise in existential thrills and chills.
Debuting on AMC in 2018, season one was inspired by Dan Simmons’ fact-based novel of the same name, about a doomed 19th-century voyage to the Arctic. In 2019, season two tackled another historical calamity, set at one of the internment camps the American government erected during the Second World War to imprison U.S. citizens of Japanese heritage.
You’d be forgiven for assuming the show was over and done with, given the lengthy hiatus. Yet now, it’s back with another nuanced psychological thriller, premiering this Thursday — not on AMC, but the cable network’s sister streamers AMC+ and Shudder.

Per the synopsis, “he must contend with patients working against him, doctors harbouring grim secrets and perhaps even the Devil himself. As Pepper navigates a hellscape where nothing is as it seems, he finds tht the only path to freedom is to face the entity which thrives on the suffering within New Hyde’s walls — but doing so may prove that the worst demons of all live inside him.”

Following CBS’s announcement that they will not return for season three, Dr. Watson and his team tackle one last case, as a murder outside their very own clinic pits them against a man from Watson and Holmes’ past. Specifically: assassin Sebastian Moran, a character plucked from the stories of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and played by the great Eddie Izzard.

Having previously explored the complex aftermath of the world’s largest-ever heist across two seasons of The Gold, journalist turned TV creator Neil Forsyth weaves another British true crime yarn.
We open in the early 1990s, as U.K. authorities look to turn the tide in their war on drug smuggling with a risky plan to embed undercover agents with some of the nation’s top crime syndicates. But the people they recruit are anything but James Bond and George Smiley. Rather, they’re average folks with no prior training who leave their mundane lives behind to become “Legends.”
As Forsyth teased to Tudum: “A lot of them are from workingclass backgrounds without any kind of financial suppor underpinning their decisions. So they’re trapped, and that’s very important — they’re trapped. They think they could have probably done more in life than this. They can see how the next 30 years are going to play out for them, and they don’t really fancy it, but they’re not in a position to go down a differen route. And suddenly, they have this opportunity to do something completely different that satisfies a lot of their unique person motivations and hopes and dreams, but with it comes an enormous danger, and they can’t resist plunging into that.”

A I mean, they’re both very ambitious. They have pride. I think the difference is Harold has had a very protective upbringing— an upbringing full of privilege, and he’s always expected to be at the top of of society. Whereas William has had a life of being chased and being hunted. They’ve been trying to kill him because he was a danger to the ruling class, and then he fihts his way to the top. He’s a soldier. He doesn’t really trust anyone except his wife — which is also one of the differences. I think the partnership between Matilda [Clémence Poésy] and William is very equal. They complement each other. She has skills that he doesn’t, and he has skills that she doesn’t, and they help each other. Whereas Harold and Edith [Emily Beecham], they love each other, for sure. They’re very close, but he doesn’t utilize her the same way that William utilizes Matilda.
Q Were you struck by just how different the human experience was 10 centuries ago?
A I don’t think we’ve evolved that much in 1,000
years. They didn’t live as long as we do, life was hard . . . but then again, I’ve just been travelling doing a docuseries and the truth is, in many parts of the world, life is as hard as it was in Europe back then. But I think that the core of what it means to be human — wanting love and all these things — they’re kind of the same.
What’s interesting is that sometimes we think that our world is much smaller than it was back then, because we have modern technology and modern transport. But what you realize when you do the research, in Europe [during this time] everybody was moving everywhere all the time. You had Scandinavians in England, in Dublin, in Ireland, in France, all the way down to the Middle East. The Vikings were everywhere. All these small groups of people were moving all over the place because there was no real national identity. They were more like, “This is our gang and this is your gang. Let’s go!”
The funny thing about doing a show like this is, there’s no written history from that far back. We only know the major events. We connect the dots. And this is obviously a drama written in ’24-’25 — so it reflects [the 11th entury], but also obviously reflects ho we are today. This show would be very different if made 30 years ago, and also if it’s made 30 years in the future.

In recent years, Hallmark has expanded its TV movie romances into the wide world of athletics with the NFL-sponsored Holiday Touchdown franchise. Now, they’re joining forces/ viewerships with another iconic sporting event.
That would be the world’s most-watched horse race — the Kentucky Derby.
Shot at the actual Churchill Downs track, Kentucky Roses casts House alum Odette Annable as Sadie, a florist ho dreams of crafting the annual flwer arrangement presented to the winner of the Derby, like her great-grandmother did decades ago through grit, gumption and sheering audacity.
As the big race nears its
starting line, Sadie finds her professional life getting all mixed up with her personal one after she meets-cute with Ash (Three Wise Men and a Baby favourite Andrew Walker), who’s been dispatched to repair the track’s iconic Twin Spires. He also happens to be the son of Churchill Downs CEO Frank Reed (Gregg Henry).

This modern twist on Pride and Prejudice is based on Italian author Felicia Kingsley’s bestselling romance novel about a sleepy little village in Chianti where the life of a young winemaker named Elisa (Matilde Gioli) is upended by the return of childhood friend Michele (Cristiano Caccamo), who may just hold the local vineyard’s fate — and Elisa’s heart — in his hands.
Per the press release, we open on “a Tuscan town where everyone is either coupled up or searching for their soulmate — everyone except Elisa, a single mother raising her teenage daughter and running the Le Giuggiole estate with her sister Giada and mother Mariana. A Yeah, we live in the space between that edgy, satirical, world-building thing and the traditional CBS sitcom. It sets up a fun and unique dynamic. And thank God CBS decided to try something new. I think they wanted a show that was going to live on network TV, but would also have a life streaming. Hopefully we achieved that.
Q Your ghost, Trevor, is a stockbroker who died sans pants. Was there a moment when you realized, “Oh, I’m going to have to spend the show’s entire run in my undies?”
A The pants-less thing for me, weirdly, was a bit of a comfort in the beginning. I had never done a comedy before. And so, in the back of my head, I was like, “If I don’t hit that joke, if I fall flt on my face, they can just pull to a wide shot and get the joke that way.” It felt like a safety net. Now there are days where I really crave a covering of some kind, especially in the later months of our season as it gets a little chillier.
Q Does the fact that the ghost characters can’t leave this B&B create unique comedic opportunities?
A Absolutely. A limitation is an opportunity. The problem, the obstruction . . . that’s your
opportunity to find something new. To be in a situation where you have your hands tied with what’s happening in this house — you can’t touch anything, you can’t leave the property — what emerges is that very small things become very big things. We get a lot of story out of this, where one person said something and you can’t let it go, and now you’re just obsessed with it.
We had a whole episode about us turning the house into rival frats. These characters have nothing to do but deal with each other. And so, the relationships become the fuel of the show. Who’s mad at who? Who’s aligned themselves with who? It’s like middle school on crack, you know?
QFive seasons on, is it safe to say that Trevor is no longer the same obnoxious 1990s Wall Street bro we met back in the pilot?
A Yeah, I think so. You know, that second episode [of season one], he tells Sam, “Why don’t you kill yourself? Become a ghost to get with me.” And now he’s at a point where Sam is looking at him to be the final sy on whether or not we’re going to tell my daughter that there are ghosts in the property, which is breaking the No. 1 rule of the show. But I think the joy is watching Trevor have a discovery and snap right back to who he is. With all of us, that’s the joy . . . But more than that, the relationships have changed. The relationships have deepened.

A You have to kind of act like it’s The Truman Show, where you don’t think about the cameras, you don’t know they’re there and you just live your life. If you can’t do that, TV’s probably not for you.
It is way harder to handle than a lot of people maybe think. But for me, I’ve always lived my life very openly and I talk about everything. So, it was just a natural thing. Why not get paid to live my life instead of living my life openly and not getting paid? There are some people that will always be the same and they’re not gonna change no matter if there are cameras or not. I think I’m one of those people.
Q On the opposite end of the spectrum, there are plenty of folks you see on reality shows who are not being their authentic selves. They’re trying to play a “character” . . .
A The audience can usually detect if someone is doing that. Like, “Is that who you really are?” I think the audience, at fist, when they were getting to know me in season one, they were like, “Wow, this guy’s intense, he’s being performative.” Sometimes, it can maybe come off a ertain way, but once you’ve had more seasons, then it’s like, “Oh wait, no, that’s actually who that person is.” Or they change and you realize, “Oh wait, that was
just a façade. They were doing that for cameras.”
Q Was it trippy the first tim you watched a season of The Valley and saw your day-today self from the outside?
A I don’t think it ever becomes un-trippy! But at least you become used to it. They always say, “It’s their truth, your truth and the actual truth.” When you watch a show back, you see something you lived through, you catch a lot of other things, and you get different perspectives on it. And it is a very unique experience, a very trippy experience. But it’s one that I’m actually privileged to have, because I can look back on stuff and be like, “Wow, I didn’t like my behaviour in that.” And I’m one of those people that will actually try to work on myself.
Q Do you have a sense of how The Valley stands out on the vast and sprawling reality television landscape?
A I think it gives this unique perspective into where millennials are now . . . It’s unique because it hasn’t been shown before. It’s either the Real Housewives, so you have this really established, lavish lifestyle, or you’re broke in an apartment and partying and you’re a kid. And there are no in-between shows. There hasn’t really been that. So, I think we filled a ap that nobody realized was there, but everybody wanted to see.

ALTHOUGH SHE’S SPENT the bulk of her career in film, Meryl Streep has been gravitating toward TV roles in recent years, appearing in series such as Big Little Lies and Only Murders in the Building. The three-time Oscar winner is returning to TV for her next project, a Netflix limited series based o Jonathan Franzen’s 2001 novel
The Corrections.
The story focuses on Enid (played by Streep), her husband Alfred and their three grown children, Gary, Chip and Denise, as the family gathers for a particularly tense holiday celebration.

Truth be told, Enid’s kids are not doing great. Gary thinks he might be clinically depressed. Chip has lost his job and is floundering pofessionally. Denise is potentially caught up in an affair. Meanwhile, Alfred’s struggling with dementia. Amid all that pain and many forks in the road, Enid is determined to deliver the best –– and potentially final — amily Christmas.
“The Corrections is a sharply comic portrait of a Midwestern family whose three unmoored adult siblings desperately resist their mother’s wish for one last Christmas together — each
undone by the delusional ambitions that were supposed to save them from becoming their parents,” reads the series logline. Described as “spellbinding” by People and “brilliant” by The New York Observer, the novel was honoured with a National Book Award in 2001.
“A book made of equal parts fury and humour, one that takes a dry-eyed look at our culture, at our pains and insecurities, while offering hope that, occasionally at least, we can reach some kind of understanding,” Publishers Weekly wrote of Franzen’s book. “This is, simply, a masterpiece.”
The series will be directed by Cord Jefferson (American Fiction, Watchmen), and written and adapted by Franzen. In addition to starring, Streep will also serve as executive producer, alongside Jefferson, Franzen, Mark Roybal (Task, No Country for Old Men), Paul Lee (The Summer I Turned Pretty, Dickinson), and Nicole Clemens (Sexy Beast, Shantaram).
The series landed at Netflix after what Deadline described as an “aggressive” bidding war. Casting for the other roles is currently underway.

WILL FIREFLY FLY AGAIN?
A sci-fi cult hit that aired for just a single season, Firefl remains beloved by fans. While the saga concluded on the big screen with the feature Serenity, it’s looking like the space western could be gearing up for another revival.
During an appearance at Awesome Con in Washington, D.C., star Nathan Fillion (who played Captain Malcolm “Mal” Reynolds) was joined onstage by Firefl co-stars Alan Tudyk, Gina Torres, Jewel Staite, Morena Baccarin, Sean Maher and Summer Glau. During the session, Fillion revealed that an animated reboot is in development, with Fillion’s production company, Collision33, teaming up with 20th Television Animation (which controls the rights to the franchise). Husband-and-wife writer-producers Marc Guggenheim (Arrow, The Flash) and Tara Butters (Agent Carter, Dollhouse) are onboard as showrunners, which will mark the spouses’ first professional collaboration together. A pilot script has been written, while early concept art has

been developed in collaboration with Oscar- and Emmy-winning animation studio ShadowMachine. The project is expected to be shopped around to potential buyers soon.
The series would be set in the timeline between the original, 11-episode TV run in 2002 and the 2005 feature film. Fillion confirmed tha he has the blessing of the series’ creator, Joss Whedon, who won’t have any involvement. If the project does move forward, Fillion and the original cast will reprise their roles.
“The dedication of Firefl fans has kept this 25-year-old show relevant,” Fillion told Deadline, referencing the show’s enduring popularity. “Clearly, the return of Firefly is something th fans want. More importantly, it’s something they deserve.”
Should an animated Firefl reboot make it to television, it would add to Fillion’s already busy schedule, as star and producer of The Rookie, and producer of upcoming spinoff The Rookie: North.
CBS has officially pied up Eternally Yours, a single-camera comedy focused on a family of vampires. Created by Ghosts showrunners Joe Port and Joe Wiseman, the series stars Ed Weeks (The Mindy Project) and Allegra Edwards (Upload) as “a vampire couple whose once-passionate romance has devolved into a pulseless marriage after 500 years together,” according to the show’s description. “Living in presentday Seattle with their oddball coven, they’ve settled into an eternal rut — until their daughter’s (Helen J. Shen) earnest human boyfriend (Jaren Lewison) unexpectedly enters their lives and forces them to confront whether their love can survive forever . . . or if forever is a life sentence.”
Daughter Emma is described as “cynical and sardonic . . . a bright and caring veterinarian who, thanks to her parents’ fraught relationship, is a commitment-phobe who is always waiting for the other shoe to drop in relationships.” Parker Young plays Jesse, described as “a lovable goofball and a under-thinker in a house of over-thinkers.”
Part of Charles and Liz’s vampire coven since the mid-1800s, Jesse’s trick to avoiding getting tied down for eternity is to only marry humans. However, because lifespans are now longer than they used to be, he’s in the fourth decade of a loving marriage with a woman who could easily pass for his mother.

The pieces that comprise Margo’s Got Money Troubles sound eclectic, to say the least, but there is method to this madness. “If I looked at them, I would say, ‘You got to be kidding me that these things would ever go together,’” says Offerman. “But what I love about a great novel and great writing is that it has all of these unexpected colours, moments and shapes. When you put them all together, it’s the stuff of lie
From the fist time he read Rufi Thorpe’s novel, it was clear to David E. Kelley — producer of TV classics like The Practice, Ally McBeal and Big Little Lies — what made these strange pieces fit toether. “For me, the characters are always the fist jumping off point in trying to caft a series. Are the characters fertile? Are they dimensional? Do they make me laugh? Do they make me feel? Do they challenge my own way of thinking? And all these characters did that in the book,” he says. “I really felt their centre and their heart, and I thought, man, if we could bring this series to life in a way that the viewers could feel these characters in a way that I did as a reader, I knew we would’ve succeeded.”

landscape. “I feel like so much stuff on V is about people with a lot of money, and this is a story of somebody with limited resources and a baby and a rickety family structure just doing what they’ve got to do to make it in America today,” she says. “Margo is a creative, resilient heroine because she does so much with the hand that she’s dealt.” It was Margo’s determination, and how it impacts those around her, that Bad Sisters actress Graham says stayed with her when she read the scripts. “There is something in Margo that Susie really sees as being unapologetic about what they’re doing: ‘I’m not asking your permission. I’m not asking for whether or not you think this is right,’” says the Irish actress. “There’s a courage to that.”
There is, of course, no Margo without Fanning. “I wish I had something scandalous to say about Elle, but unfortunately she’s heroic,” says Offerman. “I admire the hell out of her. She is so talented. She literally glows. She’s unflappabl. She’s such a pro. She’s 28 years old, but she’s the captain of our show. Without her charisma, her chops

We’re quite similar in age, and I just look at her and think, ‘You’re a tangible example of what you can do even at a young age.’”

While the role offered Offerman an opportunity to delve into the unfamiliar in terms of Jinx’s professional life, it was clear from the get-go that there was far more complexity to the character than what he presents in the ring. “He’s made bad choices up until this point, and life finally orces him to show up,” says the Parks and Recreation alum. “Through some of his failings, he has to say, ‘Okay, I kind of have no other option, but I’m here. I’m all in now. Maybe not because it was my fist choice. It’s not particularly noble, but you got me.’ He’s this influene who has a lot of affection, a lot of positivity and I think positive parenting influene, but he also has a lot of

As the show is already garnering a slew of positive reviews, Kelley hopes that what spoke to him and television critics will also speak to viewers of the show. “I think it’s a family show at its centre and an affirming onet that, where the love that they have for each other and the way that they cling to that love is very gratifying,” he says. “We live in a time, or a world, where people are increasingly becoming disconnected and the connectivity of these characters I found very refreshing, very affirmin and very hopeful. It sounds morally sentimental, but by the end of the eighth episode, I do think people will believe in that adage that the road can be extremely rocky, but if love has the tenacity that we hope it should, then it’s going to find its ay.”

HE TERM “CONSPIRACY theory” tends to be associated with the deluded rantings of some disturbed loner sporting headgear fashioned from aluminum foil, yet when you boil it down, theories about conspiracies — something undertaken covertly by a group of people, particularly when they’re unlawful and harmful — aren’t always wrong. Take the Epstein files. While thee’s much to be discovered as to what exactly Jeffry Epstein was up to, it’s become clear he had a powerful group of politicians, prosecutors and assorted billionaires in his pocket to cover up his crimes — quite literally the definition of a onspiracy. As The
X-Files used to proclaim, the truth is out there, and few people know that better than the guy who played FBI agent Fox Mulder on the conspiracydriven TV hit.
David Duchovny dips back into that world for Secrets Declassified With David Duchovny, a History Channel series that “pulls the curtain back on the covert government experiments, missions, gadgets and more that have been buried deep in the shadows until now. From black ops and extreme experiments to bizarre weapons and top-secret sites, world governments and those who work for them have done questionable things in the name of national interest,” per the logline.
As Duchovny points out, The X-Files “is a work of fiction, or science fiction, hatever you want to call it . . . this is more like documentary, more like nonfiction reporting than it is fictionaliztion.”
In Secrets Declassifie , Duchovny guides viewers through recently declassified files tt remained top-secret for decades, revealing the hidden truth behind real-life government shenanigans that were kept well under wraps at the time. Sometimes these revelations are ridiculous — such as an episode revealing a hilarious military attempt at outfitting bts with tiny weaponry — but they can also be chilling. “And it’s hard to, like, figue

I don’t know. It’s tough, and it’s interesting that way.”
Beyond playing a conspiracyobsessed FBI agent for all those years, the actor has long had an innate curiosity about the exposure of these long-hidden secrets. “The

series, it was really something that was brought to my attention as, you know, the bare fact that files do become declassified after a ertain amount of time has always been kind of interesting to me, in the sense of the truth will eventually come out,” he says. “And to me, that’s a very interesting field of inquiry . . . these are not fictional events, these are real events that have been classified or a long time, 50 years, so a fascinating bit of history to me.”
Delving into the world of real-life cover-ups has given him a different perspective than he had when dramatizing fictionalized one on The X-Files, particularly when approached by fans seeking his take. “I can have a very different reaction now, because I used to just say, and still do, you know, that we made all that s*** up,” says Duchovny. “You know, The X-Files is fiction, and this is quite th opposite. None of this is made up. These are declassified documents, so it’s much easier for me to have a fan interaction now, because they never used to believe me when I say it was made up.”
That said, some of what he’s learned through the course of hosting Secrets Declassifie has actually bolstered some of those fictional X-Files storylines, such as “all the governmental and CIA investigations, like MKUltra, into mind control and drug use and things like that. That’s very interesting to me, going back to, you know, the late ’60s to the present day, you know, mind expansion, mind altering, mind control, things
like that. I find tht fascinating,” he says. “It’s almost like somebody wrote these stories, and yet they have the advantage of being real.” After becoming immersed in declassified overnment documents and long-buried secrets, what has he taken away from Secrets Declassifie ? “You know, just the fact that we haven’t blown ourselves up. That’s pretty hopeful when you realize how many times we’ve gotten close to it,” he observes. “I don’t know about AI, you know, that’s like the next big weapon, I suppose. But I’m hopeful that we’re able to approach our growing technological abilities with a sense of humility and morality.”

The saga of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudi
WHEN HIS DARK Materials screenwriter Sarah Quintrell fist read Janice Hadlow’s The Other Bennet Sister, a continuation of Jane Austen’s classic Pride and Prejudice that follows Elizabeth’s sister Mary Bennet, she felt a hearkening back to her teenage years. “It felt like when I fist read Austen, in that the character felt so specific and et so universal that you felt like you could reach back and hold her hand,” she says. “I absolutely understood who Mary was. I connected to her experience of life. It felt like it would be a beautiful story to tell: How do you come of age when you’re the odd one out? When you’ve been made to feel like you don’t live up to the right standards. When you live in a world where, as a woman, if you’re not beautiful and married, you somehow failed?”

To Quintrell, Mary Bennet was the perfect heroine for 2026 — despite being conceived in 1813. “Women like Mary never sit at the heart of any drama, let alone a period drama. But as Janice says, ‘Most of us like to think we’re Lizzie, but we’re not.’ We’ve all got Mary in us,” she says. “She’s a pedant. She says the wrong thing. She’s clumsy. She only hand flxes to get the toast crumbs off. And she’s always eating in the show. I wanted her to feel as human as possible.” But to find someone ho could portray the surprisingly contemporary heroine in a 19th-century setting,
was a tall order. “You write something and you just hope that the actor that comes along will get you,” says Quintrell. “You feel so close to the character that it’s hard to let go.”

When Quintrell saw the audition from Ella Bruccoleri, best known for her role as Sister Frances in Call the Midwife, she knew they had struck gold. “Ella made me laugh so much. She could go ricochet between the really emotional moments and the funny moments and back again in seconds with absolute truth,” she says. “It’s an unusually brilliant performance.” Ironically, Bruccoleri had never read Austen before getting her hands on Quintrell’s scripts. “I obviously knew of Pride and Prejudice because it would be insane if I didn’t, but I hadn’t read it. I had never seen any of the adaptations. I got Sarah’s scripts and I didn’t overthink too much how fanatical people are about that world,” she says. What she encountered in the scripts gave her a visceral reaction. “I felt quite seen by that character,” says Bruccoleri. “I was like, ‘I don’t know why I keep

crying.’ It was just something in Mary and the way that she viewed herself that I was relating to on quite a deep level — the way that she struggles with interacting with the world and knowing her place within it.”
The fist two episodes of the 10-episode series take place at Longbourne estate, detailing the events of Austen’s book from the viewpoint of middle sister Mary, who according to all descriptions is neither beautiful nor witty, like her sisters. But as she travels to London to stay with her uncle Mr. Gardiner (Richard Coyle) and his wife (Indira Varma) she embarks on a journey that opens her up to new opportunities — maybe even romance. “She comes across several men in the story, and each one of them offers Mary something in her life,” teases Quintrell. “Mr. Sparrow (Aaron Gill) offers her kindness right at the beginning. Mr. Collins (Ryan Sampson) makes her question whether love is important or not. You’ve got Mr. Ryder (Laurie Davidson), who’s

so funny and kind of says to her, ‘This is the sex, drugs, and rock ’n’ roll of the 1800s. We can do away with the tired expectations of society and we can be free.’ And then you’ve got Mr. Hayward (Dónal Finn), who’s quite bookish, like her. But what I wanted to do was walk a really careful line where the heart of the story is about Mary Bennet learning to love herself.”
A Hollywood coming-of-age story would involve a glow-up, but in the case of Mary Bennet the transformation is purely emotional. To portray Mary’s incremental journey to self-acceptance — out of order, none the less — Bruccoleri relied heavily on visual cues. “Mary’s journey isn’t linear, because she takes two steps forward and three steps back and then she slowly finds her ooting again. So, I did a lot of colour coding and worked out the colour chart of Mary’s journey,” describes Bruccoleri. But when it was time to shoot her scenes the actress would continually be surprised what her co-stars

would bring out of Mary. “You can have done all this prep, but if you get there, and that’s not how it plays out — which is so often the case when you’re doing it with the other person — you have to just throw all that stuff out of the window and just be alive and be present,” she says.
The series is full of familiar characters, including all of Mary’s sisters and their spouses. But avid Austen fans ought to be particularly intrigued by this version of the Bennet matriarch, played by Ruth Jones. “This is Mary’s mother, not Lizzie’s mother. Siblings can have very different experiences of a parent,” says Quintrell. “Mrs. Bennet is brilliantly funny, but she’s brutal. And Ruth Jones was so brave in embracing that. I think she’s magnifient. She makes me laugh so much, but she’s also so mean.” In taking on the Bennet family from a new perspective, Quintrell set aside any pressure to live up the expectations of millions of Austen worshippers around the world. “I just thought, what a privilege to go and play in this world,” she says. “I didn’t let any of that in until we launched over here. And then I kind of went, ‘Oh my goodness, what did we do?’ We went into Jane

Austen’s world. But people have been great about it. And I think it’s so important that we’re bringing her characters to the next generation. I can’t think of a better guide through life for anyone, but particularly for a young woman than Jane Austen.”

The latest from actor/director Andy Serkis is this animated adaptation of George Orwell’s classic allegory about the Russian Revolution. Adam Scott (Severance) stars as novelist Ohm Bauman, who checks in to a remote country inn in Ireland, where he plans to scatter the ashes of his deceased parents. His stay turns horrifying when he becomes consumed by tales of a witch who’s haunting the inn’s honeymoon suite. When a shocking disappearance occurs, he’s plagued with increasingly disturbing visions that force him to confront the darkest corners of his past.

A LAST WORD THE
Q Vanessa dies midway through this season, in what is very much a showcase episode for you. To what degree did Dario Scardapane and the other producers loop you in on plans for her sendoff ?
A It was quite in the beginning of season two. Dario made a point of calling me and explaining his point of view on why he’s doing it and where he’s gonna take it. They made sure that I felt good about it, and that I understood why — and I truly did. Because, in some ways, this had to do with really pushing Wilson [Vincent D’Onofrio] to a place of complete madness. And that’s a price that they needed to create for the rest of the show.
I won’t lie — immediately we had a call, me and Vincent, and [he said], “I’m trying to persuade him to put her in a coma for a long, long, long, long time.” [Laughs] But that was not working the same way.
And then later on, we discussed the way she’s going to go down, why she’s doing what she’s doing, and really giving her a nice goodbye — to understand where she’s coming from and tie it all together, in a way.
Q Her death really does shake Wilson. It leads to that wonderful line from Vincent about how he’d accepted that love was a prison, but never thought he’d be trapped in it alone . . .

A It is devastating, because on one hand the “bad guys” always must pay the price. We have to be optimistic in that way. But also, the thing that always worked for them in really creating some interest was the fact that they have such an amazing love — and loyalty, which is something we value as human beings beyond a lot of other virtues. For them to lose that love, it’s really heartbreaking for the audience, I hope.

Daredevil: Born Again
A It was set up from the fist season of the fist show on Netflix. I think tht’s the way it was written by Steven DeKnight [who developed the original series]. I could already tell, then and there, that it was so unique in that sense. And then I believe it was the second season where there were questions about virtue and God. There were a lot of themes that were really digging deep into humanity. What is it, beyond the action? I know people love the action, and the action is superb, but it wouldn’t hold as much [appeal] without the investigation of what is human . . .

Q Ultimately, what traits did Vanessa and Wilson bring out in each other that would have stayed hidden had they never met?
A It’s funny . . . There was a beautiful scene where Fisk is coming back at the beginning of season one of Born Again. Vincent was sitting in front of me, he was doing this monologue, and he was playing around and he was being very emotional. As my character, I was listening to him, thinking where this will go. And I couldn’t pull away from this image of him being like a donut with a hole in it, and me being the inside of that hole. Since then, I’ve been always laughing that he’s the donut and I’m the inside. I need his protection as the whole. I need his mass, his energy, his . . . whatever he is . . . to protect me, to not be so exposed. And he needs her to fill hi up. But somehow, maybe, it’s not enough — and he’s gonna pay a price for that.
SEASON FINALE
The characters are not just superheroes with abilities beyond, they’re really human in some crucial way. For me, Vanessa is really intriguing. I could talk about her forever, and the connection to Fisk . . . the way she is completely in love and willing to go to the dark side because of that, with complete determination to be his support — and even protector, in a way.
I believe that she had come to the boxing match [where she was fatally wounded] to — it might sound crazy — but in a way she comes to protect him. Because she knows it’s inevitable [the repercussions from his actions]. So she thinks, “OK, if it’s inevitable, then I’d rather pay the price. I’d rather go down for him.” That’s a remarkable quality in a human being and a character. At the same time, the juxtaposition is that they’re villains.

Much as it may have been disappointing to say goodbye to Vanessa, is there a certain satisfaction in completing a character’s arc, as opposed to leaving it open-ended?
A
Yeah, there’s a conclusion. A beginning, middle and end. She has a really beautiful arc — from meeting him in the gallery and selling that white painting, into questioning if she wants to even dive into this relationship, then diving in and questioning being alone in a relationship where she’s left outside. And then the deal [that Fisk and Vanessa made in their relationship], which is “loyalty for truth.”
CURRENT GIG
One of Marvel’s most lauded superhero sagas, Daredevil streamed for three seasons on Netflix (2015-2018), before it was Born Again on Disney+ in 2025. Season two of the revival has seen blind lawyer by day, vigilante by night Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) fight to save New ork City from the police-state tyranny of crime boss turned mayor Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio). Flanking Fisk at every turn has been his chic, cerebral, Machiavellian wife Vanessa (Ayelet Zurer), who, alas, met her tragic end in a recent episode.
Then, we jump forward a bunch of years, we are now in Born Again, and Vanessa is a boss and she’s dealing with the empire, she has her own take on how things should run and she has somewhat control over him — but she’s not using it. She’s just, like, balancing it with love and acceptance. And there is a really beautiful balance between them; then slowly she realizes, “Wait a minute, that ‘deal’ will never really be fulfilled” Because nothing is enough for him. She’s even not enough for him. Once she realizes that, there’s a collapse in the way she handles things, and maybe there’s guilt and questioning of the future — the feeling of dread, of something bad is gonna happen and not being able to deal with it. Codependency comes in, too . . . all that good stuff !
And then the beautiful end, which ties it back into the beginning [via Vanessa reflecting on their journy while fihting for her life in the hospital]. I’m pleased with the way it came out.
QYou’ve done an array of TV shows and film over the years. Is it a markedly differen experience doing a film — where you know th beginning, middle and end right from the start — vs. doing a series — where writers, directors and actors

In her native Israel, Ayelet Zurer broke out in the early 2000s — winning an Israeli Academy Award for comingof-age dramedy Nina’s Tragedies in 2003, followed by a Best Actress trophy from the Israeli Academy of Television in 2005 for therapy drama BeTipul (later remade by HBO as In Treatment).
Those accolades led to calls from Hollywood, where Zurer appeared in Steven Spielberg’s Munich, before sharing the screen with Tom Hanks as scientist Dr. Vittoria Vetra in Angels & Demons, and playing Superman’s doomed mother in Man of Steel. On the small screen, she’s popped up in season three of Netflixs You, playing a couples therapist who really had her work cut out for her, and as the title character in Apple TV thriller Losing Alice.
are, to some degree, flying by the seat o their pants from episode to episode?
A Yes, I think so. First of all, I noticed that there’s a serious relationship between our show and the audience. They voice themselves very clearly, and I think that is listened to. We do listen in some ways. The fans are really what made the show come back, and now are really igniting some fie underneath it. So, thank you! But also, the difference between TV and film is the auteu. Even though both of them are teamwork, on TV it’s even more so because you don’t have one director. You jump from one personality to another personality, from one artistic taste to another artistic taste. And maybe someone doesn’t quite understand the things you’ve done before, so now you have to communicate that — and there are a lot of discussions. It’s not one man running the show.
Q Dario has talked about how the narrative in season one and two — with a populist leader empowering law enforcement to drag people off the streets — reflec real-world events, but it was unintentional. Was it strange to see some of the show’s stories suddenly mirrored in reality?
A Oh, it was never part of the discussion at all, because we were filming it ay ahead of time. I think he was surprised and we all kind of feel weird, because it’s really not about that But, you know, it’s funny how art imitates life and life imitates art . . .

Well, Daredevil’s “Anti-Vigilante Task Force” is a storyline that was plucked straight from the comic books, and it originated decades ago . . .
A Decades. [As opposed to tapping into modern events,] I think it’s the method of violence, it’s the method of power — what happens when power is achieved in ways that are uncontrolled.

What are mitochondria, and how do we spark them?
They are like very tiny powerplants that produce energy in every living cell of our bodies. On average, every cell has 1,500 mitochondria. Can you imagine that for their extremely small size, it’s been said that they produce, gram for gram, 10,000–50,000 times more energy than the sun?
To say that mitochondria are important to human health is grossly understating their role in our
survival. We literally would not be alive without them. They convert our food into energy, so that every other function of our body can occur as it needs to.
