CAN A DATING SHOW OVERCOME AGE GAP?
As it’s often said, age is just a number. But is it really? And, more importantly, is one’s age a factor when sparking romance? That’s the provocative question posed by Age of Attraction, Netflixs new “social experiment” dating show that brings people of various vintages together to determine if their respective number of birthdays will be a factor in forming a love connection.
“Age is thrown out the window when singles search for their soulmates, but will the years come between them?” asks the press release. “In this new dating series, hosted by Nick Viall and Natalie Joy , a group of daters will discover whether love is truly ageless.”
Real-life spouses Viall and Joy are the ideal choices to host this particular show, given that the 45-year-old former Bachelor star is 18 years older than his 26-year-old spouse. “Here, age is just a number,” Joy tells the assembled daters. “You’ll be dating without ever knowing how old your partner is.”
Age of Attraction

While the couple’s age gap hasn’t been an issue in their marriage (at least not yet), it’s questionable whether all the show’s contestants feel the same. “I don’t know if these guys are my age, my dad’s age, my grandpa’s age,” one of the younger female love-seekers admits in the trailer. “I’m getting nervous.” Meanwhile, some of the elders voice similar reservations (contestants don’t reveal their ages until after they’ve gone on a date and hit it off ). “I am petrified tht he’s too young,” a woman says after dinner with a hunky guy. “My oldest [child] is 29. I think he’s in his 30s.” In fact, that guy may be even younger than she fears. “Everybody thinks I’m significantly older than I am” he declares in a confessional. “I think I’m gonna shock her.”
On the flip sid, there are also those appearing in Age of Attraction who remain hopeful that true love will conquer all, even a vast generational divide. “The truth is, when love is there and love is real, age won’t matter,” adds one optimistic dater.

Canada’s own Ryan Gosling returns to Studio 8H for his fourth time as Saturday Night Live host, joined by musical guest Gorillaz. As PBS holds its latest pledge week — even more necessary than usual thanks to the Trump administration pulling federal funding for public television — the offerings includ this concert film, which documents a very special event the 2002 concert at London’s Royal Albert Hall, in which a who’s who of rock royalty honoured the late George Harrison, who died the previous year. Among the many musicians who hit the stage to perform Harrison’s songs are Jeff ynne, Eric Clapton, Billy Preston and Tom Petty Also on hand: the surviving members of Monty Python, plus Harrison’s fellow Beatles Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney, with the latter handling lead vocals on “Something” and “All Things Must Pass.”
Drops of God
The second season wraps up as unlikely siblings Camille (Fleur Geffrie ) and Issei (Tomohisa Yamashita) reach the end of their quest to find the greatest wine in the world — an epi journey that has brought them from Japan to Europe, along with a brief interlude in the Caucasus. No word yet on whether they will return for a third season, so fans of this unique series may want to savour this episode as the final si, just in case.

READY TO ROCKFORD?
After taking a break for the first time in nearly three decades, TV mainstay David Boreanaz is back in the pilot season mix, having landed the title role on NBC’s new Rockford Files
Strange not seeing David Boreanaz on TV anymore. Like you said [in a previous issue], he had quite the run going! What’s he doing now?

Mr. Boreanaz did, indeed, have a 27-year TV iron man streak — starting in 1997 with three seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, continuing straight on into its spinoff Angel for fiv, then Bones for 12 and SEAL Team for seven. When SEAL Team ended in October 2024, so did the streak. But the actor is keen to start a new one this fall, as he’s just been tapped for NBC’s remake of The Rockford Files. Based on the 1974-1980 James Garner vehicle, the breezy crime drama would, if the pilot is ordered to series, see Boreanaz play L.A. ex-con turned private eye Jim Rockford, who “uses his charm and wit” to crack cases.
Farewell Performance?
So sad to hear Eric Dane died. He’s been one of my faves since the McSteamy days! Does he have any shows still to come out?

The San Francisco-born matinee idol known for star turns in Grey’s Anatomy, The Last Ship, Euphoria and Countdown passed away on February 19 at age 53 — less than a year after being diagnosed with ALS. Dane was, indeed, able to complete filming his character Cal’s scenes for season three of Euphoria, which hits HBO on Sunday, April 12. He’ll also star in an indie flick called Family Secrets about a man targeted by a mysterious enemy who takes aim at him through his son and daughter. A release date for that one is still TBD. But the actor’s most meaningful swan song actually debuted on Netflix just after his death. Filmed in November, the streamer’s latest Famous Last Words special found Dane sitting down with Emmy-winning producer Brad Falchuk for a chat about his life, career and legacy. Filmed with the understanding it would only be released postmortem, the piece ends with its star locking eyes with the camera to address his teen daughters, Billie and Georgia — imparting one final, emotional bit of fatherly advice.
A GoFundMe page launched to support Dane’s family has already grossed over US$300,000 — including a US$27,000 donation by his Euphoria creator Sam Levinson

Best known for his roles as secret agent Illya Kuryakin in The Man From U.N.C.L.E. (1964-1968) and medical examiner Donald “Ducky” Mallard on NCIS (2003 until his death in 2023), Scottish thesp David McCallum got in on the vanishing act in 1975 — but it wasn’t a feature film. ather, this one was an NBC TV movie, which doubled as the pilot for a series. McCallum plays Daniel Westin, a scientist who, while working on a teleportation device, stumbles upon the technology to make
encountered scheduling conflicts with film projec like Cold War potboiler Billion Dollar Spy opposite Russell Crowe, and the title role in Mr Burton, a biopic of screen legend Richard Burton. Though Industry is still something of a hidden gem for HBO, the show has been a boon for its cast, with co-stars like Marisa Abela (a.k.a. Yasmin) also scoring both a star-studded spy drama (Black Bag) and a buzzy biopic (playing Amy Winehouse in Back to Black).
Lawtey furthermore is not the first cast member to
anything — or anyone — invisible. After learning that his company plans to hand that power over to the military, Westin sneaks into his lab one night to destroy all traces of the experiment, using the process one last time — on himself — to make his escape. Alas, he ends up permanently see-through, setting the stage for the series to come. As misfortune would have it, the show itself disappeared after 12 low-rated episodes. (Oddly enough, NBC greenlit another Invisible Man reboot called Gemini Man the very next season. That one lasted only five episodes.)

Could Lawtey’s Rob return after these “scheduling conflict” clear up? Perhaps, but not likely. Season three ended with Rob leaving the personal and professional morass of London behind for a less toxic life working at a startup in California. Per the creative team, that’s a fitting conclusion to his story.
As co-creator Mickey Down told TV Insider: “Very boldly, there is a redemption
arc for some of the characters. Characters do change in this show. Robert evolved out of the show because he had somewhat of a redemptive last episode of season three. The show operates in a world where people haven’t quite come to terms with their trauma yet, or haven’t been healed of it. And when they do, or they are healed of it, they kind of leave the show . . . I’m not going to say that’s going to be the same for every single season, but it is currently the sort of operating system of the show.”

Crimes Gone By
Among the most iconic movie stars of the past three decades, Nicole Kidman has, in recent years, found her largest successes on the small screen with such hits as Big Little Lies, The Undoing and Expats.
Now comes another foray into TV. Based on the novels of Patricia Cornwell, Scarpetta casts the Oscar winner as its complicated hero, Dr. Kay Scarpetta — a hotshot forensic pathologist who uses cuttingedge techniques to serve as voice for victims.
The story plays out over dual timelines, interweaving Kay’s journey in the ’90s as an up-andcoming medical examiner with the present day, as she returns to her hometown of Richmond, Virginia, to take up that post once more — just as the serial killer case that made her career decades ago is called into question by a fresh, very similar slew of murders.

In the past, playing those same roles, we have Blue Jean alum Rosy McEwen as Kay; Cannavale’s real-life son Jake as the younger version of Det. Marino; Weeds’ Hunter Parrish as Agent Wesley; and Amanda Righetti (who previously starred with Baker on The Mentalist) as young Dorothy. All told, the collision of these two eras will force Kay to “confront long-held professional and personal grudges, and face secrets that threaten to unravel everything she’s built.”

Slated to debut in December, this French thriller was shelved amidst accusations of plagiarism. Now, with those issues apparently resolved, we can all have our pulses pounded by the tale of weekend warriors who go on a hunting trip, only to land in the sights of some malevolent fellow hunters. After a two-part premiere March 4, episode three-ofsix arrives this Wednesday.

Netflixs beloved small-town romance is back for season seven, following the long-awaited nuptials between local midwife Mel Monroe (Alexandra Breckenridge) and soldierturned-barkeep Jack Sheridan (Martin Henderson).
Per showrunner Patrick Sean Smith, there’s still plenty of relationship drama to come for the couple . . . but fans need not worry about our two lovebirds flying solo again. As he told Tudum: “I can’t imagine creating a scenario where you think Mel and Jack are going to break up. It forces you to dig a little bit deeper into, ‘Well, what other issues can they have in their relationship?’ Especially when you want to keep it through the romance lens. I think Alex and Martin play all of those [moments so well]. It’s just resting on emotional stakes as opposed to will they, won’t they.”
Smith is also keen to probe deeper into the bond between Mayor Hope (Annette O’Toole) and Doc Mullins (Tim Matheson). “Getting to tell love stories between two people at that age is something that television never does,” he mused.
Meanwhile, there are a few new arrivals in the River. That includes rough-and-tumble rodeo cowboy Clay (Riverdale’s Cody Kearsley), a former foster kid whose hard-knock life has been spent searching for his sister. There’s also Victoria (The Vampire Diaries’ Sara Canning), a medical board investigator assigned to look into Doc; however, while she’s in town, sparks fly with an “old friend” And finall, One Tree Hill’s Austin Nichols pops up as a “figure from Mels past.”
The B.C.-shot series has already been renewed for season eight.

Q What’s the unique appeal of a character study set in the world of spies? What does that give writers and actors that they wouldn’t get in another genre?

A ARTJOM: I feel like the twists and turns of an espionage story make good character work, because you get to explore a huge range [of circumstances] without stepping off-path for the character. The sandbox is really, really big . . .
PETRO: This particular show Ponies is very interesting because it’s not necessarily about being very skilful, amazing, incredible, sneaky spies. Most of them essentially are just [regular] people who are learning how to spy. My character, he’s some kind of a double agent, but he deals with technology and that’s it . . . then, he has to climb down fie storeys to escape from one of the heads of KGB, and sneak in and drop some things to transfer information. So, they grow and they learn how to do it. This is what is interesting. The spies are learning.
Q This show takes place in a very heightened reality, but does it explore something universally relatable?
A PETRO: It’s a story about human beings and human connections, and what happens to a human being when the circumstances of their lives change completely and extremely. What do you do after somebody you live your life with dies suddenly? How does that change you?
Q Would you say this series is pulling off a bit of a tonal magic trick, given that it’s dealing with some very dark, tense stuff — but also maintains a certain playfulness?
A PETRO: The incredible chemistry the actors had is something that actually brings so much ease and life to it. And that attributes to us spending lots of time together on set and off set in Budapest. We had to spend six months there, so we had time to bond and connect, and just get to know each other better.
ARTJOM: I would also attribute it to the cocreators Susanna [Fogel] and David [Iserson] and the writing team . . . but combine that with the actresses they cast — Emilia [Clarke] and Haley [Lu Richardson] — their dynamic, and the nuances they would find and the lvity they would find. Tht’s the magic combination. You need to have somebody who has the ability to lift it up — to have levity in this really, really gloomy story.

Don’t Write Me Off Yet
As if he weren’t busy enough with Shrinking, the just-returned Scrubs and the soonto-return Ted Lasso, Bill Lawrence has another star-studded, heartfelt dramedy on the go — one that brings the prolifi creator to HBO for the very fist time.
Continuing his knack for attracting A-listers, Lawrence and co-creator Matt Tarses have booked Steve Carell as their leading man this time.
He plays Greg Russo, bestselling author of beach reads, who reluctantly drops by to do a book-reading at the college where his daughter Katie (Charly Clive) is a professor. The endlessly selfconscious Greg feels out of place in academia — but Katie has just been rocked by a campus scandal,
after her husband left her for a student. And dear old dad wants to check in. (The husband, by the way, is played by Lawrence’s old Ted Lasso star Phil Dunster.)
Alas, when Katie flames ou (quite literally), Greg must strike a deal with the college president to save her job by becoming their “writer-in-residence.” (That president? Lawrence’s old Scrubs star John C. McGinley.)
Chatting with The Hollywood Reporter, Lawrence teased: “The
show itself is at least loosely based on the fact that Matt, Steve and I all have very tight relationships with our daughters who are young adults. That relationship’s complicated because you want to protect them, when the truth is that you’re just kind of protecting yourself. We wanted to imagine what it would be like to drop a man-of-the-people author into his daughter’s claustrophobic life at a small liberal arts college in the East.”

ALIENS AMONG US!
It’s been an unexpected journey, both on screen and off, for this cartoon sci-fi romp from the maers of Rick and Morty.
In the narrative itself, aliens Korvo (voiced by co-creator Justin Roiland), Terry (Silicon Valley’s Thomas Middleditch) and their replicant offspring found themselves stranded on ou kooky little planet after a colonizing mission gone awry.
Behind the scenes, after Roiland was accused of inappropriate behaviour in the workplace and beyond, he was dismissed from both Rick and Morty and Solar Opposites — with Downton Abbey alum Dan Stevens taking over the vocals for crusty family patriarch Korvo starting in season four.
Now, season six marks the end of this long, surreal saga. Having already streamed on Hulu in the U.S. back in October, all 10 episodes hit Canada this Wednesday via Disney+.
Per the press release: “Once their alien diamond-making machine gets destroyed, the Solar Opposites must face their greatest challenge yet: living their expensive lives on a budget! When their consumerist habits and expensive hobbies are gone, only their true selves will remain . . . but will they like who they find?” Meanwhil, the Game of Thrones-esque saga that’s been brewing amongst Yumyulack’s terrarium full of shrunken humans reaches its epic, absurd conclusion.

Q What unique opportunities does a mockumentary offer that other sorts o sitcoms don’t?
A Well, I think back to the preponderance of reality shows that we have, and all the shows about different occupations where people do look at the camera and talk to you. I think [audiences] are used to seeing that now. It’s an interesting device to tell a story about a workplace.
Now, do I find it odd to onstantly spike [i.e. speak to] the camera? Yes. And I have to be reminded to do it. Because if you really think about it, my character of Joyce, the administrator, she’s the one that called these [documentarians] in. She’s the one that set this up, probably as a tool to get more funding. So, when she’s being embarrassed on camera — she clashes with a patient or a co-worker — it feels weird for me to then spike the camera like, “Whhaaattt?” I feel my character would be embarrassed and maybe say something like, “You don’t have my consent right now.” They’ve edited that out when I’ve done that . . .
Q Do you think that, different though they may be, Joyce and Alex [Allison Tolman] actually kind of need each other?

A I think both types of shows have their place on television. Sometimes you want to watch something really grisly, and celebrate that part of the hero’s journey — which, listen, all healthcare workers are f***ing heroes. With our show, we are celebrating a lot more of the work family. Of course we want to show the world how much we love and adore healthcare professionals. But, there’s something about a work family that people really resonate with — because you spend more time with your work family than you do with your real family sometimes.

Chapter two of this Revival opens on a bittersweet note, as the Louisiana duck-huntin’ empire lost its emperor between seasons. Family patriarch and Duck Commander founder Phil Robertson passed away last May at age 79, after a battle with Alzheimer’s and various other maladies.
That said, tonight’s premiere finds the est of the Robertson clan in a celebratory mood. They devote an entire day to all the activities that made dear old dad “happy, happy, happy.” That includes “a duck-plucking game, a burger-making contest and a race in Phil’s favourite chair . . . the recliner.”

AS CREATOR, WRITER, director and star of the zeitgeistcapturing 2020 series I May Destroy You, Michaela Coel made history as the fist Black woman to win an Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. Coel is now immersed in bringing viewers a new series, with an all-star cast.
A 10-part drama co-produced by HBO and BBC, in association with A24, First Day on Earth will once again feature Coel in the leading role, while she’ll also be active behind the camera, co-directing the show with Sam Miller (with whom she previously partnered on I May Destroy You).
Coel’s Comeback
“British-Ghanaian novelist Henri [Coel] is on the run — from herself, her life, her partner and that weird guy at her book talk,” states the official synopsis “When she ends up in Ghana, her ancestral homeland, she finds heself submerged in an altogether different world. Amidst new friends, fresh joy, and many different and nuanced relationships, Henri also finds secrets, lies, difficuy and denial, leading her to question everything about herself, her
heritage and her family.”
In addition to Coel, the cast includes Emmy winner Thandiwe Newton (Westworld) as Anya; Maxine Peake (Say Nothing) as Helen; Danny Sapani (Halo) as Ernest; and former Doctor Who star Ncuti Gatwa as Darren. (At the time of writing, only the characters’ names had been revealed.)
First Day on Earth has been in the works for some time; it was back in August 2024 that HBO and BBC originally ordered the series. According to BBC director of drama Lindsay Salt, I May Destroy You was “one of the reasons I wanted to join the BBC.” As for this new venture, Salt added: “In First Day on Earth, Michaela has created another unmissable series — truly original, heartfelt, hilarious, poetic storytelling and told in a way that only Michaela can. I can’t wait for everyone to see it.”
As Coel stated, “The process of creating First Day on Earth thus far has been a beautifully intimate experience, and I am excited to embark on the next phase to eventually offer this as another televisual gift for anyone willing to accompany Henri on what will be a wild odyssey.”

More than 20 years since Everybody Loves Raymond ended its run, star Ray Romano continues to be busy as ever. He’ll soon be seen in the second season of Net flix comedy Running Point, playing “basketball savant-turned-social recluse” Norm Stinson, who’ll partner with Los Angeles Waves president Isla Gordon (Kate Hudson) “to rediscover his love for the game and life.”
In addition, Romano has signed on to star in an upcoming pilot for HBO Max, How to Survive Without Me, from writers and executive producers Greg Berlanti and Bash Doran. “In the wake of matriarch Beverly’s passing, the De Angelis family have begun to drift, unsure how to manage their complicated, evolving lives without her guidance, but in true Beverly fashion, she found a way to keep running the show from the beyond,” reads the official logline. “Should they wish to experience Beverly’s final work, the family must find the time — and make the effort — to remain

connected, and be there for each other through all of life’s challenges yet to come.”
Romano will play newly widowed Leo, who’s mourning the loss of his wife while navigating his new role as single parent to fi ve complicated adult children. As everyone adjusts to life without Beverly, “Leo is forced to find his own voice as a parent, moving out of his wife’s shadow to become the family’s new, diffrently effctive centre.”
“Ray is a beloved icon who has an incredible gift for bringing both depth and levity to every character he portrays,” Clancy Collins White, president of creative affairs for Warner Bros. Television, said in a statement. “We’re thrilled to welcome him to How to Survive Without Me as Leo, the patriarch woven into this deeply moving family story. We know his performance will bring nuance and heart to Greg and Bash’s vision, and form a powerful emotional connection with viewers.”
First there was Bosch, followed by Bosch: Legacy, and then the spinoff series Ballard. The next entry in this ever-expanding franchise based on Michael Connelly’s novels will be a prequel, which is currently right in the midst of finalizing its cast.
When Bosch: Start of Watch was greenlit last fall, Cameron Monaghan (Shameless) was confirmed as the series’ lead, playing Harry Bosch in his rookie days with the LAPD circa 1991 Los Angeles, with Omari Hardwick (Power) cast as veteran officer Eli Bridge
A recent addition to the ensemble is CSI: Vegas alum Ariana Guerra, who’ll portray Rosa, a rookie LAPD office who “brings street smarts to the job.” The character description continues
by noting that “during her probationary year, a budding romance with Bosch threatens her credibility, forcing Rosa to prove she can finish what she starts”
JD Pardo, who played biker boss Ezekiel “EZ” Reyes on Mayans M.C., has also been cast; he’ll play Cory, described as a brilliant professional thief “whose calm precision was forged in the foster system, where he learned early how to read people, anticipate danger and stay in control. Confident, calculating and methodical, he acts as provider and protector — every job is a step toward mastering the chaos that shaped him, and earning a way out of Los Angeles.”

The journey of Claire & Jamie heads for the fiish line as the finl season of Outlander begins
It has been nearly 12 years since Outlander fist premiered and Second World War military nurse Claire Randall (Caitríona Balfe) travelled through the stones at Craigh na Dun to 1743, where she met Scottish Highlander Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan). Over the course of seven seasons, the two cemented their love for each other, as they traversed the globe and overcame seemingly insurmountable obstacles — attempting to thwart the Jacobites in Paris; returning home to endure bloody battle in Scotland; Claire journeying back to the future to raise her and Jamie’s child, Brianna

(Sophie Skelton), with interimhusband Frank (Tobias Menzies); reuniting in the 18th century to search for Jamie’s nephew Young Ian (John Bell) in the West Indies; then ultimately making a new home for themselves in North Carolina as the American Revolution loomed.
“We’ve done it all, haven’t we?” marvels Heughan, on a Scottish set visit attended by TV Week, during production of the final season. “e’ve learned that it’s impossible to change the course of history, but at least now they’re trying to navigate it.”
Indeed, there will be lots to navigate in this swan song, as the penultimate season ended on a few shockers. Having discovered that he is Jamie’s biological son, William Ransom (Charles Vandervaart) continues to struggle with the knowledge that his father is not Lord John Grey (David Berry).

He’s the one who raised him. But there’s going to be tension, and I think this massive secret will obviously cause some ripples in that relationship,” says Vandervaart, whose character struggles equally with Jamie. “There’s a lot of tension between them. Even just for the fact that William knows that he’s on the other side of the war. But I’m hoping that one day they can reconcile that, and actually develop a nice father-son bond.”
Claire and Jamie were also surprised by the revelation that their stillborn daughter Faith may not, in fact, have died at birth; the season-seven finale intoduced the possibility that Faith’s daughter — their granddaughter — may be in their midst. It was a bold departure from Diana Gabaldon’s books, but deviating from the source material is something showrunner Matthew B. Roberts and exec producer Maril Davis have had to embrace — more so than ever since announcing the end

of the series. “Obviously it’s hard to be doing the last season of the TV show when Diana still has a book left [to publish],” says Davis. “We don’t know where she’s taking the characters, so we have to figue out a way to conclude it in a way that’s satisfying everyone.” Roberts compares the novels and the series to a parent and child. “They have the same DNA obviously, and parents contribute a lot to their children,” he says. “But the children’s life has its own span and story to tell. So, that’s us.”
What viewers need not worry about is whether Claire and Jamie make it

through these tribulations as a united front. “We don’t play the ‘if’ game with Claire and Jamie. No. 1: there’s 10 books. So, Google it. It’s not Game of Thrones,” says Roberts. “We dig into the love story of it all and enduring love. For me, a great example is I Love Lucy. You never once thought, ‘Oh, they’re going to get divorced.’ Well, that’s Jamie and Claire. They can go through hell and high water, but you never think that they’ll let go. It’s, ‘How do they survive? How do they get through it? How do they get back together?’ We’re a ‘how’ show.”
Portraying these lovers through the decades — or, in Claire’s case, centuries — has been a privilege for the two actors. “We met this couple who got married before they even knew each other. And it was all very fier, but it was a real power struggle within the relationship because they were trying to find their ooting. That took a long time,” says Balfe. “I mean, I don’t think either of them have lost their stubbornness or feistiness necessarily, but there has been a softening, and I think that it’s been lovely finding those ays of, ‘Well, what has softened about them? Where do they still challenge each other? Where have they learned about each other better, to better support each other?’” For Heughan, it’s the squabbles that have been telling about where they stand as a couple. “There have been scenes that are, on paper,

slightly antagonistic, but we’re trying to show that a married couple isn’t bickering and arguing every day, or if they are, there’s an underlying love and trust,” he says. “Their sparring is obviously great, but they have each other’s back and they’ve committed to each other, and I think that’s beautiful about this relationship.”
The idea of saying goodbye had, at the time of the interviews, not hit them yet. “It goes in peaks and valleys,” says Balfe. “When we had our fist readthrough, we got very emotional because you get hit with these waves of realization. And then you get into the everyday work and you can kind of put it away for a little bit and then, all of a sudden, something else will happen and you get hit with it again.” For Balfe, one of the final-season hihlights includes directing an episode. “We’ve played these characters now for over 10 years and it’s been incredible to look at the show from a different perspective,” she says. “As an actor, you’re so focused just on your character, so to be able to have this broader view, in terms of the storytelling, has been really exciting.”
What she and Heughan won’t miss is the relentless schedule. “Maybe in fie years I’ll be able to look back and go, ‘Oh, that’s what that 10 years was all about.’ It’s been so intense,” she says. Her co-star agrees. “It’s just been such an incredible journey. It’ll be interesting to see what fills tht space, that void,” Heughan muses. “But, I have to say, I sat down with Jamie Roy from [Outlander prequel] Blood of My Blood, and to see them beginning their journey, there are so many similarities. It was cool to see them go on their journey. I’m going to be tuning in from the comfort of my sofa!”

SARAH CHALKE could not be more thrilled to clock back in at Sacred Heart Hospital. A decade-and-a-half after saying goodbye to Scrubs, Elliot (Chalke), J.D. (Zach Braff) and Turk (Donald Faison) are once again reunited as colleagues, with series creator Bill Lawrence back at the helm. “Oh, we’re so happy,” says the B.C.-raised Chalke. “We’re so excited. It’s been really, really, really, truly even funner than I had anticipated.”

Before viewers get too excited about the resurrection of “Eagle!” or the recurring abuse of J.D. by Dr. Cox (John C. McGinley), there are some things that have evolved in the 15 years that have passed. “The difference now is that, obviously, [back then] they were brand-new and that was part of the fun. They were fish out of ater. They were trying everything for the fist time. They were insecure about their knowledge, their skills, all of those things,” says Chalke. “In this iteration, [they’re] coming back and being teachers and leaders. For Elliot, I think she really cares and wants to teach these new interns.”
Then there are the off-the-clock changes. Remember that Elliot-J.D. wedding we heard about in season nine? The marriage, unfortunately, didn’t last. Chalke isn’t losing sleep over it — in fact. she thinks it’s for the best. “I loved where Bill and the team landed, because I feel like if J.D. and Elliot were happily married now, there’s not a lot of drama and comedy if everybody is fin,” the actress muses. “I feel like having them divorced as an entry point gives so much room for them to figue out in this new version —
who they’re going to be to each other, how they’re going to co-parent, and how they’re actually going to end up working together again and finding a way back to a friendship.”
But in some ways, the more things change, the more they stay the same. Just like Lawrence and his writers incorporated aspects of the actors into the original series, some real-life “Chalkey” quickly slipped into the

reboot. “The original idea of Elliot, she was kind of a b**** and that quickly shifted. They were like, ‘OK, Sarah — total klutz — let’s write that in.’ You would think that part would be different in this iteration 25 years later, but actually it’s not,” Chalke chuckles. “Two days before shooting, we had a rehearsal and met all of the new young interns, and Zach said, ‘You guys, Chalkey’s gonna break something every day.’ And the next
day, I was hiking with the dogs and I fell and broke my finer. So, not a lot has changed.”
While Chalke and her old castmates slipped right back into the groove, the challenge for the writers was finding the riht tone. “I think we really wanted to get back to the fist season of Scrubs that was much more grounded,” says Chalke. “[In the interest of] grounding it, we would try it a bunch of different ways and do different takes and kind of find those levels.” Luckily, mixing laughter with tragedy also happens to be what the Ted Lasso and Shrinking creator excels at. “It was absolutely my favourite part about Scrubs — that ‘Bill Lawrence Special’ of having comedy and pathos, when you’re laughing one minute and then it’s a gut-punch the next,” says Chalke. “What set Scrubs, and the tone of it, really early on was the third episode we did called ‘My Old Lady’ where it says, ‘One out of every three patients admitted here will die here,’ and all three [doctors] wonder the whole time in the split-screen, is it going to be J.D., Elliot or Turk who lose their patient — and then it’s all three. That combination of comedy and the drama, it’s my favourite kind of television to watch, but also to act in, because no day was ever boring, no two days were ever the same.”

The decade-and-a-half time jump, says Chalke, allowed for creative freedom in terms of where life had taken these doctors. “Everybody as human beings have had so much more life experience, and I think for Donald, Zach and I to be playing the teachers this round has been really fun.” The actress also praises Lawrence’s ability to inject optimism in all his projects.
“When Bill writes his shows — and I think it’s why Ted Lasso worked so well during the pandemic and what
I also feel about Shrinking — is they all have an element of hope,” she says. “It’s what I loved in the original Scrubs. They’re always hopeful — and I think that is another thing we really wanted to capture in this round.”
Lest this start to sound like an obituary for their executive producer,
Lawrence is very much alive and prolific he just remained in Los Angeles, while the rest of the crew decamped to Vancouver, where the revival was shot. “We had Bill there every day on the original one and now we don’t,” Chalke laments. “We shot at this old, abandoned hospital in the Valley in Los Angeles, and the writers’ room was in one of the wings, so they would just radio down and [Bill] would run up for rehearsal and he’d be like, ‘Oh, try this line instead. Here’s an alt joke.’ I learned everything about comedy and timing and how to tell a joke on the job, from Bill.”
That said, the Vancouver native can’t help but feel like she manifested this dream gig. “I had said, two years prior, ‘I just want to do a comedy like Scrubs, that felt like Scrubs, shooting in Vancouver.’ And then that’s what ended up happening!” she marvels. “It was neat that it was in my hometown and that I got to have everyone come to my city. It was really cool. And to share it with my kids . . . when I did Firefly Lan there, it was COVID and they couldn’t really come visit. To get to share that with them and with my nieces and nephew, it was a really, really special part of it.”

16 OF AMERICA’S MOST CELEBRATED CHEFS compete for a million-dollar prize in Padma Lakshmi’s high-stakes culinary competition

NCE UPON A TIME, cooking was something that took place in kitchens, behind closed doors, with a singular purpose of creating a meal. Thanks to televised competitions like Iron Chef, Top Chef, Chopped and their ilk, the act of creating food has now become an Olympic-style event that plays out in TV studios, rife with drama, upsets and surprise twists — and viewers can’t get enough.
The ante has been upped significantly with new CBS series America’s Culinary Cup, in which 16 of the most decorated chefs in the U.S. compete in this “highstakes culinary competition series.”
As the CBS press release explains, these chefs are the crème de la crème, including six with Michelin stars (an honour held by less than one per cent of restaurants worldwide), two Bocuse d’Or medalists, two James Beard Award winners and 14 James Beard Award nominees.
Each episode sees these elite chefs doing battle, “bringing their unique flair and signture dishes to the table.” With a US$1-million prize awaiting the winner at the finish lin, “chefs must rise to the challenge or crumble under the heat.”
A familiar face to foodie fans serves as host: Padma Lakshmi, emcee of Top Chef from 2006 until her exit in 2023. She’s joined by acclaimed chefs Michael Cimarusti and Wylie Dufresne, who lend their ample expertise as judges, with the competition focusing on 10 “culinary commandments” — meat, vegetables, sauces, dessert, innovation, flvours, sustainability, world cuisine, consistency, and culinary science and technology. “Lakshmi, Cimarusti and Dufresne will evaluate taste, creativity, presentation and technique to decide who advances, who is eliminated and who ultimately masters the commandments to claim America’s Culinary Cup,” the release adds.
When it came to casting the show, Lakshmi — who is also an executive producer — was adamant about only recruiting the best of the best from the U.S. fin-dining scene. “I think we really wanted the most lauded, top, elite chefs across the country,” she says. “So I was just looking to find the best and brightest chefs. Giving away a million dollars makes a lot of chefs

come out of the woodwork who would never consider competing on television. And so we were very lucky in the pool we got, but they’re not just chefs who have high calibre of expertise and accolades. They also have really interesting stories. We have Keith [Corbin], who spent a decade behind bars and in prison and now hires formerly incarcerated people in his kitchen. We have a guy named Michael [Diaz de Leon], who used to be part of a cult with his family. We have one of our chefs who was pregnant. We have another chef who was supposed to get married and postponed her wedding. So, while they’re all very talented, they all are also super-interesting, diverse people.”
Given her nearly two decades of experience with Top Chef, Lakshmi feels this new show “is obviously the biggest swing I’ve taken on television . . . I thought that the genre was ready for a shakeup, for a refresh and for something new and different. And I wanted to be the one who did it.”
As for the show’s “culinary commandments,” Lakshmi explains that they were “designed to be something that tests the mettle of our chefs in

every aspect of their career, but it also is designed to be something that’s very approachable and understandable by anyone who’s ever cooked for their family . . . it’s like meat, dessert, vegetables. It’s not anything that’s so unapproachable for someone who’s not a chef or doesn’t work in food.”
Understandably, judging the quality of one dish vs. another can be somewhat subjective, even to those with the most sophisticated of palates. That’s why, when devising the judging criteria, “I wanted a numerical system because I wanted it to be quantifiabl,” Lakshmi says. “I wanted it to be apparent for the audience at home. I wanted it to be empirical and for them to be able to follow along with stats along the way. I mean, we only have the real estate we have with airtime, so a lot of that we don’t actually delve into. But it’s there for our benefit, or the chefs’ benefit, and also or the audience’s benefit”
According to Cimarusti — who owns two Michelin-starred restaurants in Los Angeles (Providence and Connie and Ted’s), that evaluation system places contestants on a level playing field. “By rating people numerically, I think it takes all the bias out of it,” he explains. “Because while I know what I’m scoring a dish, I have no idea what Wylie might think. I mean, there’s a little bit that goes on during the debate; you get an idea. But I have no idea what he’s scoring a dish or the way Padma might be scoring a dish. Honestly, I think it makes it much more fair, you know? It’s less about opinions and debate and more about how I actually scored a dish or how Padma actually scored a dish or how Wylie did.”
“And there’s a lot of really great, fun, interesting twists along the way that are around the scoring,” adds fellow judge Dufresne, a familiar face to Top Chef viewers for his frequent appearances as guest judge. “I think that that’s going to be exciting for people to see and follow
along and root for and cheer for at home.”
Meanwhile, Lakshmi promises the cook-off tht viewers witness on America’s Culinary Cup will be very different from what they may be expecting. “When all the other shows are zigging, I wanted to zag,” she says. “I want to do a show that just tests the mettle of every great chef in every way possible. There are no tricks. I’m not going to be putting obstacles in their way. This is a very pure show that aspires to be the Olympics of cooking, the Wimbledon of cooking.”

In her second feature as director, Maggie Gyllenhaal reimagines horror classic The Bride of Frankenstein. Having survived into the 1930s, Dr. Frankenstein’s monster (played by Christian Bale) has had it up to here with all those angry villagers and their torches and pitchforks. Forced into a life of isolation, the creature — calling himself Frank — travels to Chicago to seek out groundbreaking scientist Dr. Euphronius (Annette Bening) and asks her to create a companion for him. The two revive a murdered young woman and the Bride (Jessie Buckley) is born. “What ensues is beyond what either of them imagined: Murder! Possession! A wild and radical cultural movement! And outlaw lovers in a wild and combustible romance!” reads the synopsis of this bonkers take on a genre classic that finds these two undea lovebirds embarking on a Bonnie & Clyde-style crime spree that places them in the crosshairs of a police detective (Gyllenhaal’s real-life husband, Peter Sarsgaard).
Youngblood
STARRING Ashton James, Blair Underwood, Shawn Doyle, Alexandra McDonald
In Disney’s latest animated feature, scientists discover how to “hop” consciousness into lifelike robotic critters, allowing humans to communicate with animals as animals. When Mabel “hops” her mind into a robotic beaver, she quickly learns that the forest operates by its own rules, and she must navigate a strict food chain and a complex social hierarchy, where one wrong move could mean exile — or worse.
Raised by his father Blane (Blair Underwood) to be tough and unforgiving, Detroit hockey prodigy Dean Youngblood (Ashton James) is invited to Canada to play with the Hamilton Mustangs. As cocky as he is skilled, the teen’s arrogance alienates his teammates and rankles his coach (Shawn Doyle). An altercation with a goonish rival leads Dean to a crossroads that will force him to choose what kind of a man he wants to be — both on and off the ic.

The big development to start this fourth season was Daniel being promoted to equity partner by Harry [Victor Garber]. How does that affect the sibling workplace rivalry between Daniel and Abby?
A
JEWEL: I mean, I think Abby has a sense of, “Oh God, just let him have it.” It’s when things develop even further though, she starts to get really nervous. All Abby’s really wanted is a voice — and we do get a fantastic nemesis this season who comes in and rocks the boat and takes away her voice even more. So, the dynamic gets pretty sticky, a little bit precarious . . . until shocking things happen, of course, and change everything all over again.
ZACH: Daniel’s definitely xcited about it, to start off. I’d say “gung-ho.” But, as Jewel said, there are things that happen. The ring of power, he looks a little too closely at it, and Daniel gets to make some decisions about that as well. It’s a fun journey for him.
Q There’s that scene early on where Daniel expects Harry to make a speech announcing his

partnership, and it ends up falling short. Are both Daniel and Abby, on some level, still caught in that fool’s errand of craving fatherly validation from a man who simply can’t give it?
A
ZACH: It’s the heart of the show. For all the characters, not even just family. Cecil [Brett Kelly], Winston [Ryan Lino], Jerri [Bobbi Charlton] — Harry is such a centre of gravity for everybody. But especially, as his children, he really is the thing that we want to move the most and get approval out of.
JEWEL: And it’s never gonna happen. Especially with Daniel and Harry, it’s so sad because Daniel is constantly trying to get his dad’s approval. He’s constantly wanting to be a legitimate partner with his father in his firm. And I think Aby has seen a lot of that, felt really bad for Daniel and
All these characters are essentially flawed humans. We’re all ruled by ego. We’re all trying to let go of the ego and figure out how to be — and how to be happy, honestly. It’s a rollercoaster of emotions, as life is.
has seen the way that their dad treats him as much lesser than equal. It can be really tough to constantly have to go after this approval from somebody who’s just never gonna give it to you.
ZACH: Yeah, and Abby doesn’t really care. At least, that’s the front. She’s good at not showing that she cares. But obviously there’s the heart of it [for her] too — the dad love. We always talk about that during filmin. That’s, I think, the really beautiful part of our show and for us to play, is there’s just that constant need for love in a familial way. It kind of brings all these characters together despite their work dynamic, despite who’s in charge or whose case it is.
Q And for Harry, it’s not like he’s withholding approval out of cruelty or as a motivational tactic. He just seems oblivious to what his kids need.
A JEWEL: He is oblivious to it. I mean, he thinks of it as a bonus that they’re fihting for his approval, right? He thinks that keeps them on their toes, but that’s not his motivation. He’s just completely oblivious to the fact that his children need to feel love at all. He’s like, “Aren’t I doing that by giving you a job? Quit your whining!”
ZACH: But his aloofness [in his personal life] is also the reason we’re all in this situation — the beginning of our family dynamic. It’s just so true to his character.

They say that people who visit family for the holidays almost revert to who they were when they were kids. Is that the

same for the Svenssons, after they were all suddenly thrown together in the same fir?
A
JEWEL: Oh, very much so. There’s something so fun as an actor to play this. They just become so infantile when they’re around each other, you know? They’re in this professional workspace and they really do turn into petulant, arguing children. It’s really fun to play these professionals who are great at their jobs, but very easily slip back into that brothersister dynamic of, “No, stop it! It’s my turn!”
We’ve talked about trying to find the moments of them being true siblings in the scene . . .
ZACH: . . . yeah, as opposed to just being competitors.
Q And Jewel, you mentioned when last we spoke that Abby was still in denial about her issues with alcohol. Is she closer to acceptance this year?
A JEWEL: I think this is the season where she has not only accepted that she has an addiction, but that it will always be a part of her life. This will always be a battle for her and it’s something that she’s always going to have to pay attention to. She’s accepted that as fact, which is kind of refreshing, right? Because she can kind of move on to these other issues that she has with her parents; she’s not as afraid anymore to dive a little deeper. And I also love that there are some really beautiful scenes in season four where she talks about her addiction in almost a matter-of-

fact tone. She says to someone, “Oh, I can’t drink that. I’m an alcoholic.” Before, she couldn’t even say that word out loud. It’s been nice to see her journey into acceptance, because obviously that’s what she had to do to change.
QI’m also struck by the juxtaposition of Abby’s fraught relationship with her mother and her fraught relationship with her daughter. Have those two bonds come to mirror each other?
A JEWEL: Well, these are tough pills to swallow, right? You really get to know yourself when you become a parent. I know that from personal experience. You’re like, “Oh wow, that’s a trigger for me.” Her relationship with Sofi [Eden Summer Gilmore], especially with Sofia beoming a teenager, it’s been tough. Sofi’s just been giving her the gears and has been so unaccepting of all these battles that her mother is facing. And now, Sofi’s turned a corner too, and she and her mother have grown a lot closer. She’s come to the realization that her mother’s had it really tough. And I think looking inward at her relationship with Joanne [Lauren Holly], her mother, it’s been a little hard because she idolizes her mom. She was raised to believe that

Prior to landing the part of endlessly ambitious, type-A lawyer Daniel Svensson, Regina’s own Zach Smadu was best known for his three-season run as Det. Ash Kular on CTV’s Cardinal, offering some comic relief to the ice-cold crime thriller. He’s also guested on fellow Canadian-made hits like Letterkenny, Hudson & Rex and Transplant. Meanwhile, before the gifted-yet-reckless Abby came her way, pride of White Rock Jewel Staite had a long and accomplished career dating back to childhood, co-leading Disney Channel phenom Flash Forward with Ben Foster Later, she soared to fame as brilliant, bubbly engineer Kaylee Frye on Firefl and its big-screen followup Serenity. Further adding to her sci-fi cred, taite played Dr. Jennifer Keller on the latter seasons of B.C.-shot Stargate: Atlantis.
her mom did nothing wrong, and her dad was the enemy. He’s the one that left us. [But] all of these new things have come to light where she’s starting to realize that there are two sides to every story. And maybe her mother isn’t so perfect. That’s been a hard thing for her to face.
Q Do you feel it’s a tough balance to strike, dealing with heavy issues, but also keeping things buoyant and funny?
A JEWEL: The goal is to make you laugh and make you cry in every episode — and mostly to make you think. There is no black-andwhite in this show. There’s always been a grey area, and that’s the area that we celebrate and dive into the most. Do you think this person is right or do you think they’re wrong? And everybody has a different opinion.
All these characters are essentially flwed humans. We’re all ruled by ego. We’re all trying to let go of the ego and figue out how to be — and how to be happy, honestly. It’s a rollercoaster of emotions, as life is. That’s my favourite part about working on this show, is that we get it all.
Q The cases that you all tackle each week are seemingly quite outlandish . . . but more grounded in reality than we might think.
A ZACH: Credit to our showrunner [Susin Nielsen] and the whole writing team — they very much have their ears to the ground on what is really happening. I feel that’s one of the strong qualities of the show, that it’s just so prescient with current issues. I read something in the news recently and I was like, “We did that!”
JEWEL: And they’re wild, right? We’re reading [the scripts] and going, “There’s no way someone has done this.” And our writers are like, “No, no. This is a real thing.” That’s where they get a lot of their inspiration from — these funny little things they find in the nws.
ZACH: As the old saying goes: “Truth is stranger than fiction” That’s what our show definitel highlights.

They are like very tiny powerplants that produce energy in every living cell of our bodies. On average, every cell has 1,500 mitochondria. Can you imagine that for their extremely small size, it’s been said that they produce, gram for gram, 10,000–50,000 times more energy than the sun?
To say that mitochondria are important to human health is grossly understating their role in our
survival. We literally would not be alive without them. They convert our food into energy, so that every other function of our body can occur as it needs to. As we age, our ability to create healthy mitochondria to support our energy demands diminishes. And because about 90% of our cellular energy is produced by mitochondria, this decline can cause significant health issues
