HOLLYWOOD’S BIG, WEIRD YEAR HONOURED
With the exception of the Super Bowl (this year’s game, despite being a total snooze, was the second most-watched in history), live networktelevision event programming has been a case of diminishing returns. This has certainly been true of the Oscars. While the 2000 Academy Awards drew an audience of nearly 47 million, the 2021 gala hit an all-time low of less than 10 million (although last year’s event rebounded to just under 20 million). Still, recent news that the broadcast would be moving from ABC to YouTube in 2029 is indicative of how streaming has come to dominate the television landscape, while traditional networks continue their slow but seemingly inevitable slide toward extinction.
Meanwhile, this year’s Oscar nominations demonstrate Hollywood in flux — a truly weird time in which more films debut on steaming services than in cinemas, while a recent spate of mergers look to place all mass media within the control of a handful of mega-corporations.
The Oscars
SUNDAY, 4 P.M., CTV & ABC; 8:02 P.M., ABC
Amidst all this change, director Ryan Coogler’s stylish vampire thriller Sinners, boasting a predominantly Black cast, leads the pack with a record-breaking 16 noms — more, by the way, than Titanic. It also speaks volumes that the other nine Best Picture nominees are an eclectic lot, ranging from the unabashedly quirky (Marty Supreme, One Battle After Another and Bugonia) to the slick, sleek, big-budget F1, which, when compared to the other contenders, seems like a relic from a bygone era. Conan O’Brien returns for his second consecutive year as Oscars host, and in a recent interview the former late-night icon admitted that being emcee of Hollywood’s biggest award show has certainly kept his pride in check. “When you do something like the Oscars, what you have to keep in mind is they’re not there to see me,” he said. “You need to put your ego not just in the backseat, but in the trunk.”

Sarah Ferguson is back in the headlines now that her chummy email exchanges with Jeffrey Epstei have been exposed — yet this four-part series dramatizes an earlier scandal that, while not directly related to the erstwhile Duchess of York, involved someone quite close to her. The Lady weaves the true story of Jane Andrews (Mia McKenna-Bruce, recently seen in Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials), a working-class woman who became the dresser to Duchess Sarah (Game of Thrones’ Natalie Dormer) before being convicted of murder. “Moving amongst the highest social circles in Britain, Jane managed to secure a place in the upper classes, only to lose her job with the Duchess after nine years of service,” reads the synopsis. “Still reeling from her fall from grace, Jane went on to meet charismatic businessman Thomas Cressman [You’s Ed Speleers] and fell deeply in love. Soon cracks began to develop in the romance Jane had pinned all her hopes on, with disastrous consequences.”
Secrets Declassifie With David Duchovny

Former X-Files truth-seeker David Duchovny returns to host season two of this docuseries, poring over government file that were once top-secret but have now been declassified detailing clandestine shenanigans countries across the world have gotten up to in the name of national security. Expect everything from “black ops and bizarre experiments to deadly cover-ups and nefarious gadgets.”

Returning with season 17, this reality romp continues to bring viewers inside the lives of Trent and Amber Johnston, and their five kids: Liz, Jonah, Anna, Alex and Emma, all of whom have dwarfism As viewers will recall, last season centred on Anna’s feud with her mom, which looks to poised to drag on in this new instalment.

DANE’S DENOUEMENT
Last year, Netflix debuted this provocative series in whic famous folks share their thoughts in an interview that won’t be unveiled until after their deaths. The first episode feature a posthumous chat with primatologist Jane Goodall. In this second one, actor Eric Dane — known for his roles in Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria — joined producer Brad Falchuk for what he knew would be his final interview (he passed awa from ALS in February 2026). “Eric and I were the same age when we discussed his life and legacy, so the conversation felt uniquely moving and personal,” says Falchuk. “There was no self-pity in Eric. He refused to complain. He was brave, soulful, charming, joyful, grateful and hilarious . . . His final words a the end of the episode are truly beautiful.”

Ball Run: JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure
This dazzling anime series is set in the U.S., circa 1890, as the Steel Ball Run — a continent-spanning horse race — is about to begin. Encompassing 4,000 miles, the race offers US$50 million to the winne. When former superstar jockey Johnny Joestar, now paralyzed and despondent, discovers a way to compete, he must form an uneasy alliance with another jockey — mysterious outlaw Gyro Zeppeli — as the two men make a mad dash for the finish lin.

Season three of producer/director Tim Burton’s kooky Addams Family follow-up began production in February, debuting sometime in 2027. For that third season, Burton recruited one of his O.G. creepy luminaries, Winona Ryder — who launched her career as outcast teen Lydia Deetz back in 1988’s Beetlejuice, before reprising in 2024’s Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice. (The latter film co-starred ednesday Addams herself, Jenna Ortega.) Ryder’s role in Wednesday is under wraps, but we do know that another Burton fave, Dark Shadows and Dumbo alum Eva Green, has been cast as Ophelia — wild-card sister of Wednesday’s mom, Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones).
X Gonna Give It to Ya?
Are they doing any more X-Files? There were a few new seasons awhile ago, but it’s been long while . . .

After a groundbreaking run on Fox from 1993-2002, films in 1998 and 2008, and revival series in 2016 and 2018, the paranormal conspiracy thriller starring David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson as mismatched FBI agents digging into otherworldly cases will return for a whole new incarnation. And it’s set to be helmed by a most intriguing filmmaer.
Stepping in for original X-Files creator Chris Carter is Black Panther and Sinners Oscar nominee Ryan Coogler, who will write and direct the pilot of a new version, premiering on Hulu/Disney+ in 2027. Carter returns as executive producer, but neither Duchovny nor Anderson are involved (at least, not yet!)
Danielle Deadwyler, a rising star who’s recently distinguished herself in flics like Till, 40 Acres and The Piano Lesson, has landed one of the leads in a series that will, per its synopsis, kick off as “two highly decorated but vastly different FBI agents form an unlikely bond when they are assigned to a long-shuttered division devoted to cases involving unexplained phenomena.”
While Coogler helms the pilot and will remain on as a producer, the show will be run by Jennifer Yale, late of spy thriller The Copenhagen Test

I remember Pierre Berton ’s CBC show, which stirred up a lot of controversy in its day. I was too young to understand the issues, but it seems much of what he did would stand up in today’s world . . .

The Pierre Berton Show aired on CBC from 1962 to 1973, and was full of surprises. Hosted by the longtime journalist, author and broadcaster, he was adored by TV fans — but it’s true, the man was never afraid to ruffl feathers, especially if it meant calling out injustice.
Born in Whitehorse, Berton began his journalism career in the Boy Scouts of Canada, writing for The Seagull Patrol of St. Mary’s Troop while he was earning badges. By the time he was 12 and living in Victoria in the grips of the Great Depression, circumstances were already molding him into the genius who would one day host his namesake TV show, while becoming a household name as a longtime panellist on CBC’s
MGM+ (available in Canada only via bundling through Prime Video) has just greenlit a remake of iconic 1960 flick The Magnificent Seven

Berton furthermore took stands against such things as antisemitism, and did one of the earliest interviews with The Rolling Stones, despite the public outcry that these ne’er-do-well rockers were corrupting our youth.

by Yul Brynner in the original. Per Deadline, his character Chris Adams is “stoic, steady under pressure and with an unflinching gaze that does most of the talking for him . . . Chris has no patience for hypocrisy or cruelty, and holds fast to a quiet moral code rooted in fairness and restraint.”
Production begins in Calgary circa June 2026. Look for a debut in 2027.

Imperfect Women

The Handmaid’s Tale’s Elisabeth Moss, Scandal’s Kerry Washington and House of Cards’ Kate Mara play Mary, Eleanor and Nancy — a trio of best pals in Southern California whose lives change forever when Nancy is murdered. It’s based on Araminta Hall’s 2020 novel, the synopsis for which teases: “Nancy was gorgeous, wealthy and cherished by those who knew her. From the outside, her life was perfect. But as the investigation into her death floundes and her friends Eleanor and Mary wrestle with their grief, dark details surface that reveal how little they knew their friend, each other and maybe even themselves.”
Speaking at an Apple press day (via The Hollywood Reporter),
Moss, who is also a producer here, mused: “I fell in love with the idea of an accurate, truthful, raw and vulnerable representation of real female friendship. What really drew me to it was the idea of being able to talk about female friendship in a way that maybe isn’t often done. And to talk about the harder parts of it, the beauty of it, the wonderful things about it, the things that are irreplaceable, but also the things that are also a little darker and the secrets that develop, especially over a friendship that lasts 20-something years.” For All Mankind’s Joel Kinnaman and Billions’ Corey Stoll play the imperfect men in these imperfect women’s lives. The fist two of eight episodes debut on Wednesday.

Southwest tribal cops Leaphorn and Chee’s perilous foray into the L.A. underworld continues, as Chee goes undercover, while Leaphorn and Manuelito lend their expertise to an FBI investigation in exchange for a lead on their own case. Meanwhile, Billie, the runaway teen at the heart of that case, “makes a lifechanging discovery.”

Artificial ove
The Svenssons take on two more cases of familial discord that have escalated to the point of needing a judge to sort it all out. This week, both those cases involve artificial intelligenc, as Abby reps a woman who wants to delete an “AI replica” her ex made of their late daughter; meanwhile, Daniel must prove that his client is in a legit, committed relationship with an “AI doll”.

HOME ON THE RANGE
Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan expands his alreadyexpansive TV empire with a new show that’s sort of a Yellowstone spinoff, but branches far afield from the power ranching Dutton clan. As with all of Sheridan’s projects these days, the cowboy scribe has roped in an A-list cast.
Led by three-time Oscar nominee Michelle Pfeiffer and the equally iconic Kurt Russell, The Madison opens on the Clyburn family, who move from New York to Montana’s Madison River after a devastating tragedy. It’s described by Paramount as “a heartfelt study of grief and human connection.” Furthermore, the show is teased as “Sheridan’s most intimate work to date, unfolding across two distinct worlds — the beautiful landscape of Montana and the vibrant energy of Manhattan — as it examines the ties that bind families together.”
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Russell praised both his writer and his co-star. “Taylor’s excellent, and Michelle’s great . . . and she’s really great in this show. Talking about awards — I think they’re going to be looking Michelle’s way.”
The actor continued: “I think that it’s a very different show for Taylor, in that it’s a very female-gaze-oriented show.”
Rounding out the ensemble, we have Firefly ane’s Beau Garrett, Sheridan’s old 1923 star Danielle Vasinova, and a slew of Canadians in Will Arnett (Is This Thing On?), Kevin Zegers (Fear the Walking Dead) and Patrick J. Adams (Suits).
Sporting a most peculiar rollout, the six-part first season will debut three episodes this Saturday and three next Saturday. Rumour has it, a second chapter is already in the works.

Having scored an Oscar for Oppenheimer during his time away, Cillian Murphy returns as Tommy Shelby — whom we last saw in the mid-1930s, his criminal empire and his personal life having crumbled before his eyes. Literally riding off into the sunset, the man left what remained of his kin to do as they wished with what was left of the illicit family business.
Now, the year is 1940. Tommy is a haunted man, still in self-imposed exile from Birmingham. “He’s just medicating and living in this purgatory that he’s

created for himself in this big old house,” Murphy said in a chat with Tudum. “He’s in this liminal space, not really living, he’s not really dead. He’s ignoring the world, he’s ignoring his family.”
But before he was a mobster, Tommy was a soldier. And with the Second World War ramping up, he’s drawn back to Birmingham on a mission to thwart a rising fascist organization, led by the insidious Beckett (Tim Roth). Alas, this puppet master has his hooks in the new head of the Peaky Blinders syndicate — Tommy’s volatile son Duke (now played by The Banshees of Inisherin Oscar nominee Barry Keoghan).
Silo’s Rebecca Ferguson also joins the cast as a mystery woman with intimate ties to our antihero.
The Irradiated City
Fans of HBO’s Chernobyl can brace themselves for another taut, fact-based miniseries about unsung heroes racing to contain a nuclear catastrophe. In this five-parte, the setting is Goiânia, Brazil, circa 1987. Scavengers raiding an abandoned hospital pick apart a radiotherapy device and accidentally unleash Cesium-137 — a deadly isotope which, as the thieves try to sell their scraps, contaminates hundreds of people across the city.

In Questionable Company
As the TV landscape has expanded over the past two decades with the advent of cable and streaming, viewers have been privy to ever more avant-garde series. But few in recent memory have pushed boundaries so thrillingly, hilariously as Jury Duty.
Debuting back in 2023, season one followed a man named Ronald Gladden, who was called to serve on the jury of a civil case in his native Southern California. Ron was told that this particular trial would be shadowed by a documentary crew. In reality, everyone except for him was an actor — tasked with creating Offi -style mockumentary cringe comedy at every turn, while keeping young Ron from suspecting anything was amiss.
One of those “jurors” was James Marsden (of X-Men and Westworld), playing himself as a vapid, self-obsessed Hollywood actor whose pathetic bid to be excused for reasons of fame wound up getting the whole panel sequestered for the duration of the trial. At the end of it all, the ruse was revealed and Ronald, ever the good sport, was given a pile of cash for his troubles. Now, at last, we get a new instalment that takes the antics
Jury Duty Presents: Company Retreat FRIDAY, PRIME VIDEO
outside the courtroom, with a whole new group of improv performers recruited to dupe another unsuspecting mark. This time, that’s Anthony, who thinks he’s been hired as a temp at a family-owned hot sauce company about to embark on their annual corporate retreat. Alas, tensions are running high, as the founder is about to step down — and control of the business is up for grabs. No onscreen appearance for Mr. Marsden in season two, but he does remain onboard as an exec producer.

BRAWL IN THE FAMILY
Graphic novelist Robert Kirkman is no doubt best known as creator of the books that inspired AMC’s record-breakingly popular Walking Dead franchise.
But another of the man’s comics has been raking in viewers the past five years: Prime Vide’s Invincible. The dark, bloody, quirky superhero satire follows Mark Grayson (voiced by Kirkman’s erstwhile Walking Dead star Steven Yeun), an awkward teen who grew up in the shadow of his Supermanesque father, Omni-Man (Oscar winner J.K. Simmons). Season one saw Mark’s late-blooming powers finally arrive — just as he learned Dad was not the benevolent defender of Earth that Mark and the rest of humanity had always thought, but a murderous undercover alien sent to enslave us all.
The seasons since then have seen Mark (superhero name: Invincible) grapple with that profound trauma here and there, while facing off against various other colourful villains. ut now, in season four, he’ll have to deal with his daddy issues head-on, as the heroic son and his antiheroic father must join forces with a slew of other crusaders to save Earth from an invasion by the Viltrumites — the very species that sent Omni-Man to subjugate us.
The eight-part season debuts with three new episodes on Wednesday.
FOUL PLAY?
Disgraced Broadway phenom Richard Bean (Kevin Kline) continues his quest to restore his family’s small-town theatre to past glory. Alas, the first round of auditions for Our Town reveal the local talent pool in Millersburg has dwindled in his decades-long absence. Meanwhile, tensions with his former girlfriend/current sister-in-law Kristen (Laura Linney) intensify . . . and Boyle (Billy Carter) makes a most unexpected demand.
American Classic

Oh My Pod!
Season two of CBC’s absurdist, refreshingly honest menopause comedy wraps as Julie has her hopes for the future dashed by bad news from the boss. Later, when her podcasting partner Kris suffers a mental health crisis and disappears, Julie tracks her down and makes an offer — which leads to a surprising counter.
Small Achievable Goals

Chop, Kick, Cluck!
Japanese manga comics and the anime series they inspire tend to be inherently outlandish — in the best possible way. But even for those readers/viewers well-versed in their larger-than-life oeuvre, Rooster Fighter is a bird of a different feather.
Created by Shu – Sakuratani in 2020, the deliciously eccentric graphic novels follow Keiji, a steely-eyed rooster who makes his way through the world — samurai-style — defending humanity from demonic forces with his unparalleled martial arts skills. As the press release teases: “When strange creatures suddenly appear and start attacking, he confronts them head-on while scoffing: ou make my crown curl!’ His opponents may be 10 storeys tall, but nothing is bigger than his stout heart and his fearsome battle cry — Kokekokko!”
Driving Keiji’s crusade? An unrelenting thirst
for vengeance over the death of his sister, who was felled by a “White Demon” that our hero is determined to seek, peck and destroy.
The novels have been adapted for the screen by Hiroshi Seko, who described the appeal of this karate-choppin’ chicken in a talk with Anime Trending: “Keiji reminds me of those Hollywood heroes from the ’80s and ’90s that I grew up with when I was a kid. Those guys are all about justice. They’re very stubborn, they’re nice to ladies and they keep their friends close. I think you don’t see that kind of straightforward hero as much these days . . . there’s a sense of nostalgia with Keiji.”
Added Sakuratani: “What I want to tell fans is to actually watch it more than once. Every time you watch it, you’ll find something dierent. It’s almost like an infinitely flavourful piece of gum. You keep chewing it, and you just get more and more flvour.”

You can’t leave a situation and go play video games in your room. You can’t talk to your family. You learn how to communicate really well, and how to lean on some people and support people in certain situations, in ways that you wouldn’t really care to do at home.
EMMY: And also, having the uncomfortable conversations. In the real world, maybe I would just block you or maybe I would talk to you a week from now because I need time to cool down. We know we’re gonna be with these people in the morning and tonight and at supper. It’s better to just talk about it and get it gone with — because we just wanna have fun.
Q Were you gobsmacked when it was revealed that Snooki would be your recurring den mother? Did you have any clue a Jersey Shore cameo like that was in the works?

EMMETT: I was still so gobsmacked by the idea of being on the show, I couldn’t even think ahead enough to be like, “There’s gonna be someone from Jersey Shore.” It was a hundred times more shocking that it was Snooki. I was like, “Oh my gosh, am I actually talking to you right now?”

QDid you ever have a moment of, “Ohhh, I’m not so sure I want my people back home to see the antics that just got filmed?
EMMETT: I don’t think I felt that at all, actually. My family knows me pretty well. They know what to expect when I get goin’. I was more so just thinking, “I can’t wait to watch that one back!”
EMMY: I wasn’t worried about people seeing it, per se. I was more worried about [laughs] . . . you forget you’re on camera pretty easy and pretty quickly. So, I was just worried because sometimes I’ll talk out loud [without thinking] or say something that might be completely dumb, and I’m like, “Oh gosh. That’s on air now?”
Q Let’s talk about the show’s setting. How did life in Kelowna treat you this season?
AEMMY: I didn’t realize it was that hot there! I think for the fist few days we were all adjusting to the heat. But it is such a beautiful summer place to be — the boats and the lake and the wineries and just everything is beautiful.
Q Do you think U.S. viewers will be surprised that us “nice, polite” Canadians can do the Jersey Shore thing?

This Woman’s Place Is in the House, filmmaer Jeff Lieberman examines the political career of Bella Abzug, who challenged the male-dominated status quo in Washington, D.C., via her 1970 election to the House of Representatives. With her signature wide-brimmed hats and Bronx swagger, she came at D.C. swingin’ — fighting hard for women to gain the right to have their own credit cards and battling for equality for the LGBTQ+ community, all while paving the way for future generations of women to take their own seats in Congress. shattered when fieman Bobby Nash (Peter Krause), who’d been with the show since day one, perished heroically in the line of duty near the end of season eight. “I’ve heard that many fans are upset by this loss and they have a right to be. It is a loss,” Krause said in a statement to Variety at the time. “That said, it was more than a bold creative choice on a bold show. Bobby Nash was written in sacrifie and he was built for this. First responders risk their lives on the job so that others can see another day. His story arc honours them.”
On the Horizon
The silver lining for fans of the actor, however, is that he’s got another major role in the works, which could bring him back to television on a weekly basis. According to a report from Deadline, Krause has been cast as the lead in a new NBC pilot, Protection — the fist star to be announced in what’s expected to be a large ensemble.
The show hails from creator Josh Safran, the man behind ABC’s Quantico. Safran will produce alongside Today co-host Jenna Bush Hager, via her Thousand Voices production company. According to the
logline: “When a U.S. Marshal falls in the line of duty, a seemingly cut-and-dried case turns into a deadly conspiracy as a family of law enforcement agents becomes the target of a mysterious assassin. Bridging personal differences and crossing professional boundaries, the Thornhill family must use the expertise from a lifetime of protecting civilians and politicians to protect one another and bring the killer to justice — even if it means betraying their sworn code.”
Krause will play Mike Thornhill, a former Secret Service agent now manning a post as assistant director of intelligence. Coming from a blue-collar background, he’s in no hurry for his job to come to an end, and has “been the life of the party forever and that attitude has come at a cost.”
If NBC decides to order Protection to series, Krause would return to the network where he spent six seasons on the critically adored Parenthood. The actor’s other TV credits have included Sports Night, Dirty Sexy Money and Six Feet Under, the latter of which scored him three Emmy nominations.

GAME OF SPIES
While NBC has been going all-in on reviving the concept of old-school pilot season, the process has played out somewhat differently over at Fox. Rather than taking the traditional path of commissioning various pilots and moving forward with the best, the network has instead chosen to focus on a select few shows, with an eye to giving them a straight-to-series order — no pilot required!
The first such show to be ordered this year is The Interrogator, which will hit Fox sometime during the 2026-’27 season. This one is a thriller set within the world of espionage — starring, written and executive produced by British actor-comedian Stephen Fry. The Interrogator centres on former MI6 agent Conrad Henry (Fry), who leads an elite team of super-spies who take on assignments that have stymied traditional intelligence agencies.
“When conventional methods have failed,” states the logline, “Henry’s quirky charm,
superior intellect and mind-bending behavioural manoeuvres make him the only man able to lockpick the minds of the world’s most dangerous criminals.”
Twelve episodes have been ordered so far. Writer-producers Dan Dworkin and Jay Beattie (who helmed Da Vinci Code prequel series The Lost Symbol) have signed on as executive producers and showrunners.
Fry has a long association with Fox. Not only did he guest star on House (opposite former comedy partner Hugh Laurie, with whom he worked on Blackadder and their own British sketch series, A Bit of Fry & Laurie), he also held the recurring role of forensic psychologist-turned-chef Dr. Gordon Wyatt on Bones. Recent projects for the in-demand actor include Netflix comedy Too Much and BBC’s The Celebrity Traitors. Fry will also soon reprise his film role as King James III in Red, White & Royal Wedding, the follow-up to Prime Video romance Red, White & Royal Blue.
It’s been a minute since This Is Us ended, but Milo Ventimiglia has at last honed in on his next project. He’s been tapped by HBO Max to star in American Blue, the pilot for a new cop drama from Supernatural showrunner Jeremy Carver that is said to evoke classic police procedurals such as NYPD Blue
Ventimiglia will play Brian “Milk” Milkovich, a natural-born leader looking for a second chance in the place he left behind, according to the officia description. Returning to his hometown of Joliet, Illinois, he sets out to rescue the beleaguered local police force while seeking out redemption of his own.
“American Blue will take audiences inside a gritty and authentic police drama, reflecting the myriad challenges i
policing today,” said Sarah Aubrey, HBO Max’s head of originals, in a statement. “As with The Pitt, our goal of longer seasons will allow viewers to sink deeply into this world across multiple episodes and to return to it on an annual basis. We can’t wait for Jeremy Carver’s vision for American Blue to come to life with Milo Ventimiglia in the lead role and David Ayer [End of Watch] directing our pilot.”
“We are thrilled to have Milo and David join American Blue,” added Clancy Collins White of Warner Bros. “Milo’s dynamic presence onscreen and David’s keen eye are a perfect match for the complex, character-driven drama that Jeremy created. GODZILLA IS JOINED BY KING KONG IN AN EXPLOSIVE SECOND SEASON OF MONARCH
ODZILLAS AND KONGS AND RUSSELLS, OH MY! Monarch: Legacy of Monsters returns for season two, and while the first outing hd plenty of gargantuan creatures on the loose, a world already shaken by their mere existence should now start worrying about a new threat: Titan X.
TITANS
Set in Legendary Pictures’ big-screen “MonsterVerse,” season one of the Apple TV series played out across two timelines. The contemporary events took place in 2015, one day after G-Day, as seen in the 2014 blockbuster Godzilla, with long-lost half-siblings Cate (Anna Sawai) and Kentaro (Ren Watabe) fist discovering each other, then looking into their missing dad’s connection to a secretive monster-hunting organization called Monarch. The flashbcks, set between 1952 and 1959, focused on Cate and Ken’s grandparents Keiko Miura (Mari Yamamoto) and Bill Randa (Anders Holm), who — along with U.S. military liaison Lee Shaw (Wyatt Russell) — ended up founding Monarch.

Between the two timelines is Axis Mundi, a netherworld where time virtually stands still. At the end of season one, Cate and her hacker pal May (Kiersey Clemons) rescued the presumed-dead Keiko from this purgatory. The twist: because of the temporal distortion, grandma Keiko was the same age as when she disappeared decades ago. What’s more, while Cate and May spent just hours in this demented realm, two years had passed back home. Amidst their daring escape, they had to leave present-day Lee (played by Wyatt’s iconic dad, Kurt Russell) behind. Early in the season-two premiere, Cate made a risky play that saved Lee . . . but unleashed a whole new Titan catastrophe. Helping elemental balancer of the scales Godzilla handle that threat this year is his old frenemy King Kong, who charges onto the scene with a vengeance, after cameoing at the end of season one.
Yet as season two begins, the beasties take a temporary backseat to some human drama. “For Keiko, it’s absolute devastation amidst some kind of hope,” says Yamamoto. “Amidst Kong’s appearance, we didn’t really get to process her coming back after 59 years, so I think there’s a lot to be discovered. It hasn’t fully sunk in that she’s lost almost everybody she’s ever known and loved. I like to call season two the reckoning of all that’s happened in season one.”

Kong: Skull Island. But fans need not say goodbye to Bill Randa quite yet, as the new season takes us back to 1957 South America, before Keiko’s descent into Axis Mundi. “We’re in a Chilean fishing villge based on clues we’ve uncovered, to find moe clues to discover more monsters, and that really kind of tees up what’s happening in the modern timeline,” teases Holm. “For Billy, [the excursion shows] his passion for the truth and discovering what’s really out there, and his passion for curiosity trumping his relationship with Keiko. I need to go chase the truth, but Lee’s mission is to protect us, and I think that’s a little bit more appealing for Keiko.” Adds Yamamoto: “The individual relationships between Keiko, Lee and Billy, it’s more granular this season. You see why it works and what the issues are.”
As the one cast member who gets to work with both father and son, Yamamoto raves about the Russells’ ability to inhabit the same man. “They’re both incredible actors on their own, but when they’re working together to build this character, they work so hard on sounding alike,” she says. “Sometimes I do a double-take because they sound exactly the same. I don’t know if they’ve decided on it, but some words come out with the

exact tone and inflection, and I am like, ‘I don’t know who I’m talking to anymore.’ It’s amazing because the Lee Shaw character is so guarded, but at the same time, you see everything in their eyes. It’s beautiful witnessing that, filteed through two different humans who are related.”
Holm, on the other hand, did not borrow cues from Goodman’s performance in Skull Island or the occasional cameo on this show. “John Goodman’s a legend who we’ve all grown up watching, so I did take a moment to be like, ‘Maybe I’ll watch it and steal some moves,’” says Holm. “But then I thought, ‘Am I going to be handcuffed to doing this move?’

And are people going to be like, ‘Are you doing moves?’ I just didn’t want to have that. The writers helped me tremendously; teeing up dialoguewise, story-wise who this guy is before he gets to where John’s character of Bill was in Skull Island.”
Indeed, more so than the action, it’s the character arcs that rope actors and fans alike into Monarch. “I think it’s what separates it from other shows that have these big, spectacular citydecimating creatures,” says Holm. “Godzilla is iconic and Godzilla is definitely in the mix. But ou’ve got these intricate human stories woven throughout that amplify everything that’s happening. We’re not just seeing people run from monsters tearing down a city. We’re really keying into who these people are, why they’re there, what’s happening in their lives, what happened generationally in their lives that they don’t even know about, that are affecting the decisions they make today as they run from or towards a monster.”
All these sci-fi onceits also afford the actors some rare opportunities. “For me, personally, it’s an incredible character to play because you have this historic context of post-war Japan and then getting to do monster-hunting, and also getting to time travel to modern day and suddenly become a grandma,” says Yamamoto. “How does she deal with that? There’s so
many elements that I get to play — so for me, it’s such a blast.”
The wily vet of the bunch, Russell Sr. agrees the show raises many compelling questions — which he very much enjoys. “What’s great about science fiction i two words: ‘What if?’ And I love that we go into the, ‘What if this actually happened? How would you deal with it? How can you learn about it? How are you going to survive?’ I think the underlying story here, that’s always a part of the monster world, is not turning into a monster yourself as you’re trying to deal with these monsters. Every one of us has to face that.”
What’s great about science fiction is two words: ‘What if?’ And I love that we go into the, ‘What if this actually happened? How would you deal with it? How can you learn about it?
Challenging Kong and Godzilla for king of the monsters this year is the mysterious aquatic behemoth known as Titan X.

THE BITTER EXIT of Kevin Costner from Yellowstone may have slammed the brakes on one of television’s most successful dramas, but creator Taylor Sheridan has proven to have multiple cards up his sleeve to keep the franchise alive. These include previous prequels 1883 and 1923, and upcoming spinoffs The Dutton Ranch (focused on original star Kelly Reilly’s Beth Dutton and Cole Hauser’s Rip Wheeler), The Madison (about a New York City family relocating to Montana, with a cast headed by Michelle Pfeiffer), 6666 (a still-in-development series focused on Jefferson White’s Yellowstone character, Jimmy Hurdstrom) and 1944, a third prequel set during the Second World War.

Showrunner Spencer Hudnut views Marshals as “a non-traditional procedural . . . a heavily character-driven show” intended to appeal to fans of the original series while also following the case-ofthe-week format that has served CBS so well over the years. “My hope is that we have enough Yellowstone for the Yellowstone viewers and enough sort of kinetic action and drama to please the CBS viewers, as well,” he says.

Before all those, however, we have Marshals — which, unlike all the other shows, airs on CBS, not Paramount+.
This time, the focus is on youngest Dutton scion Kayce, played once again by Luke Grimes. “With the Yellowstone Ranch behind him, Dutton joins an elite unit of U.S. Marshals, combining his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana,” states the network’s logline. “Kayce and his teammates — Pete Calvin (Logan Marshall-Green), Belle Skinner (Arielle Kebbel), Andrea Cruz (Ash Santos) and Miles Kittle (Tatanka Means) — must balance the high psychological cost of serving as the last line of defence in the region’s war on violence with their duty to their families, which for Kayce includes his son Tate (Brecken Merrill) and his confidants

For Grimes, who’d previously played Kayce in all fie seasons of Yellowstone, Marshals places the character in unfamiliar terrain. In the pilot, viewers discover he’s a recent widower mourning the loss of Monica (Kelsey Asbille). “Where we meet him, he’s kind of just at the end of his emotional road,” says Grimes. “Obviously in the original series, so many really hard things have happened to this guy with his family, with his past, suffering PTSD from things that happened to him at war. And then, right when you meet him here, you pretty much find out tht his wife has passed away.”
That twist, Grimes explains, emerged from his conversations with Sheridan.

from the beginning . . . that was sort of Romeo and Juliet. They were like twin flames, thy belonged together. And so, he loses his soulmate,” Grimes reflects. “You know, there’s really nothing darker than that. I remember even thinking, ‘How is this going to work? Maybe that’s too sad. Maybe that’s too much drama to just watch this guy be in so much pain.’ But the really great device of our show is that Kayce finds a purpose and a reason to get up in the morning, and that comes from his old SEAL buddy who comes and finds him and says, ‘Hey, I figued out a way to turn my life around and deal with my demons — and it’s becoming useful to other people in using our skill set to help out others.’ Through that, Kayce slowly but surely starts to find his ay, starts to find a eason and a purpose. Interestingly, when Grimes filmed his final senes for Yellowstone, he firmly belived that was the last time he’d ever play the character. “I thought Yellowstone was over,” he says. “I didn’t see any chance of it continuing, especially because Kayce’s arc ended so sort of perfectly, and I thought anything past that is just going to be boring to watch. You know, he’s happy, so that’s no fun; there’s no drama there. And when they started bringing up the fact that they were

considering doing this, I just couldn’t wrap my head around it, until I met Spencer. He and I had a Zoom, and I just really liked him and I really liked his ideas. Up until that point, I didn’t think that this was going to happen. It was meeting him and hearing the idea and thinking, ‘There really is something there to explore. And Kayce can do some things in this show that people kind of wished he could’ve done in Yellowstone.’ That was exciting for me.”
As Hudnut noted, Marshals may follow the template of a procedural, but the emphasis will always be on the characters themselves. “We use the cases of the week or the missions, per se, as a way to reveal something about our characters,” he explains. “This is not a hardcore procedural where by the end of the fist act we’ve been through seven red herrings and are putting clues together. It’s really a character-forward show. And so, I think in talking with Luke, when we started to put this show together, character is what excites us. We will always lean into character more than the procedure.”
Where we meet him, he’s kind of just at the end of his emotional road . . . I think we find a really lost, lost man.

WHEN VIRGIN RIVER’S KANDYSE McCLURE gets approached by fans expressing the joy this heartwarming show brings to their lives, what she would like them to know is . . . she gets it.
“It was really an answered prayer, career-wise,” says the South African-Canadian actress, who joined the fictional orthern California town in its fifth season, after making a name or herself on Battlestar Galactica, Hemlock Grove and other darker projects.
“I had spent so much time in this world of genre and thriller and horror and devastation,” says McClure. “I mean, Battlestar was an excellent show, but not a happy one. I’ve been killed on camera so

Kaia Bryant, chief of the Virgin River Fire Department, is not uncomplicated — but there’s little chance she’s going to be mauled to death by a fellow character. “I love the messy, ‘Can-do, we’ll try . . . Oops, I did it again’ quality of who she is,” McClure muses. “She’s a little all over the place.”

The last season of this B.C.-lensed series ended with her declaring to boyfriend John “Preacher” Middleton (Colin Lawrence) that she may not be cut out for marriage. “It’s the story of, ‘It’s me. I’m not good at relationships. I wouldn’t want to do that to you.’ That’s where Kaia is,” the actress explains. “‘What if I break your heart? What if I say something that I didn’t mean and now I’ve hurt you? I don’t want that for you. Maybe stay away from me, but love me.’ Of course, Preacher is just so steady and so amused.”

Breckenridge) wedding, these two start the new season on stable ground. “We’re in a really steady, loving, together place,” says McClure. “I feel like they’ve proven themselves to each other. Kaia was with him through the court case, and the devastating possibility of losing him really solidified or her that this is a love that deserves a care that is maybe uncomfortable for her, but that she’s willing to explore. But I mean, it’s TV, so . . .” she laughs. On that note, when an old acquaintance of Preacher’s returns to town, Kaia suddenly and surprisingly starts to doubt herself. “It’s that insecurity of, ‘All this time, I was questioning whether this place and you met my needs, but do I meet yours?’ Once that doubt creeps in and starts rolling around in your head, you have to resolve it.”
Preach and Kaia are not the only couple in Virgin River having to overcome a few unexpected obstacles in season seven. Nurse practitioner Mel Monroe — now MonroeSheridan — and barkeep Jack Sheridan should be in the throes of passion as newlyweds, but the sudden possibility of becoming parents dredges all kinds of emotions to the surface. “It’s that thing when you love someone or something so much of, ‘Am I going to be disappointed again? I don’t know if I can take that kind of disappointment,’ ” says McClure. “Mel has really just gone through it, not only emotionally and psychologically, but physically.”
Meanwhile, Lizzie (Sarah Dugdale) is right on the cusp of motherhood, which is about to shake up her world. “I love how uncompromising Lizzie becomes when she’s pregnant,” McClure says. “She’s sweet, almost Pollyanna-ish, and all of a sudden meets the reality of life and responsibility in a way that I don’t think she thought about before.” Alas, once Lizzie does give birth, she must grapple with the effects of postpartum. “The writers on the show have a real gift for dealing with some very challenging subject matters and making it approachable, in a way that people can relate to and discuss it at a slight remove,” McClure explains.
Mel (Alexandra Breckenridge) and Jack (Martin Henderson) finally tied the knot last season. Now, could a kid or two be in the couple’s future?
Of course, it wouldn’t be Virgin River if the town didn’t rally in support of their own. Whether it’s Mel and her fears about losing out on parenthood, Lizzie and her doubts about rising to the occasion, or Kaia and her feelings of relationship inadequacy, the other women of the community are always there for them. “They don’t seek to solve anything, but that presence is the greatest thing. The currency is listening and being there,” says McClure, who this year is included in the vaunted “sewing circle.” “First of all, they’re so funny,” she beams about the older generation of Virgin River’s female residents. “I said to [showrunner Patrick Sean Smith], ‘How does Kaia get in with the sewing circle? Can we do something about that? I want to know this sense of lives lived — with those actresses as well as the characters that they play.”
Meanwhile, behind the scenes is a supportive yet serious group of collaborators. “It’s not a challenging set at all. It’s a lovely work environment,” McClure reflects. “I lve the ease of communication we have with the writers, and that there’s always somebody there. If you have a question, they’re really open to it. But you’ve got to be on your stuff. You’ve got to come prepared. You’ve got to come with ideas. You’ve got to come with problem-solving, because that’s the standard, and I love that we’re all on that page.” That being said, the Virgin River-ness of it all can’t help but seep in, even off-screen. “This is a feel-good show. This is about care and connection, so there is that element of it that runs through set. There needs to be ease and calm that goes on behind the scenes,” says McClure. “I think [Smith] has been such a great leader, because he is so chill, so smart, so on top of it. But there’s also no skating through things, and I love and appreciate that.”

Q You began season 11 out here with us British Columbians — specifically in Osoyoos. Its amazing how much a person can not know about their own backyard. The only desert in Canada, the first Indigenous-founded winery in North America . . .
A It was awesome to be there, and I’m glad the episode turned out well. And it is true — I mean, I could say the same thing. In Newfoundland, I grew up maybe an hour drive and a 10-minute ferry ride from Bell Island, or Fogo Island [towns previously covered on Still Standing] . . . There are places right next door that you just don’t know a lot about. And this show makes us dig in and learn a bit of the history and get some of the cooler stories. It’s wild what you can learn about your immediate surroundings that you had no idea about.
Q After over a decade profiling these small towns across the country, talking to so many people, what’s the weirdest story or tidbit of history that’s rattling around inside your head?
Jonny Harris
A There are so many obscure, weird things that you find out. I mean, I just mentioned Bell Island. When we did that episode, I went scuba diving with a guy who does these adventure tours there; you can dive these two wrecks of these two freighters. Bell Island had a massive iron ore mine. Of course, during the Second World War, it was very important for the Allies, and there are two ore freighters that were torpedoed by Nazi U-boats.
The guy I went diving with, he’s at this adventure tourism expo in England somewhere, and a guy approaches him and says, “You dived these two wrecks, right? Those were sunk by a U-boat that was captained by my father-inlaw.” And Rick Stanley, the guy who runs the tour operation in Newfoundland [Ocean Quest Adventures], he said, “Well, you guys have to come and visit.” That guy went and spoke to his

well. Rick Mercer, I remember hearing him say in an interview, “I’m the least funny guy in my family.” And on the school bus in Pouch Cove, I was the least funny kid on that bus . . . Like I say, sometimes it’s the people who are just not trying at all who come across as the funniest.
QDo you think people underestimate just how much work and meticulous preparation goes into professional comedy? Do they view it as, “Oh, this guy just goofs around for a living?”
wife, and she said, “No, we’re not gonna go to Bell Island.” She’d only found out after [her father] died and she was going through his things . . . she found these Nazi Iron Cross medals he’d earned for sinking these boats. She’s like, “There are people there, they would despise us.” But eventually, he talks her into it. They came, and she brought these two medals that her U-boat captain father had and gave them to the museum there in Bell Island. It’s wild, the stories that you’ll discover.

Q Conan O’Brien has said that when he went to film a special in Ireland, he was struck that people on the street — like his cab driver — were funnier than him. I wonder if you’ve had that experience in your travels, where average folks are wittier than the pros?
A I found the same thing in Newfoundland. The amount of people that you encounter who are hilarious and so sharply witted, it’s incredible. I sometimes joke, I would take the school bus about an hour to and from school in the morning and the afternoon — and I was probably the least funny kid on that school bus. But the difference was, none of these other kids were really trying to be funny. People say to me, “Why are there a lot of comedians who come from Newfoundland?” And I think the easiest way to answer it is, like, a cultural sauciness. It’s the way people are in their everyday. It’s the way you communicate with other human beings. It’s just always there.
But I couldn’t agree more; I think, for Newfoundland, it’s very much the case with Conan’s experience in Ireland. I know that feeling
A In a way, I hope they don’t appreciate the amount of work and the honing that goes into it — because it should look easy. It’s the same as pro athletes. The magic of it is to be good enough that you make it look easy. But behind the scenes . . . I remember as a kid watching comedians on TV or having cassettes of Eddie Murphy, and thinking, “Do they just get up on stage and tell these funny stories?” And I was sort of on the doorstep of the industry before I realized how much work and rehearsal and time goes into it.
[On Still Standing,] we have a team. We’ve got story producers who are talking to people in the communities before we ever get on a plane, and they pick four or fie or six people that we’re gonna talk to, to get a good cross-section of the community and a good angle at the story we’re going to try to tell . . . And there is a lot of work that goes into the comedy itself. You see on any given episode maybe 13-14 minutes of me on

stage — when I’m actually doing probably over 40 minutes of material specifically about the twn. But in order to be fun, I think it should come across as I just kinda show up and chat with a few people and whip out a few funny observations. But there’s a ton of work that goes into it, for sure.
Q What’s your approach for interviewing these folks you meet? This is a comedy series, but you’re often discussing dark, painful times. It seems you’ve become very good at knowing when to chime in and when to just keep quiet and let them tell their stories . . .
A Well, you nailed it — because in the fist season, I don’t know if I was as good at that. I felt like I had to be funny in the interviews, because I’m watching 22 Minutes, and Mark Critch or Mary Walsh go up to a politician in the airport and they’ve got all these insanely funny, sharp oneliners. I thought, “Jeez, that’s what I’ve got to do.” But, you know, the show is trying to take a somewhat compassionate angle on these communities’ struggles. And I think somewhere in the fist couple seasons, it dawned on me — this format of the show where I interview these people and then do a standup set, I don’t need to be funny now. I need to talk to this person. I need to get the information. And if I’m trying to think about
MEMORABLE ROLES
Miraculous as it may seem to have a show air for 11 seasons on Canadian television, Still Standing is actually a side gig for Mr. Harris — and his main claim to fame has been running for nearly twice as long. The native of Pouch Cove, Newfoundland, has spent 19 seasons and counting on late1800s, early-1900s crime drama Murdoch Mysteries. He plays silly-yet-stalwart copper George Crabtree — comic foil to the Sherlock-esque Inspector William Murdoch (Yannick Bisson) as he patrols the streets of old-timey Toronto. You’ve furthermore seen Harris guest on The Listener, Republic of Doyle and Frankie Drake Mysteries. And of course, he remains an in-demand standup, having appeared at such prestigious fests as Just for Laughs.

So, the beauty of the format is that it allows me to have an honest conversation with somebody and I can just let them tell their piece. Which is great for me because I’m not like the gang on 22 Minutes. It’s just not what I’m good at. Like, we can all relate to an argument that you’ve had with somebody, and it’s two days later in the shower that you think of the perfect thing you should have said. Or in a social setting where you thought, “Oh, it would have been really funny if I said that!” With this particular format for this particular show, I get to kind of do that. It can be two days later where I think of something sharp to say and I jot that down. I’ve also got three other funny people [on the series’ staff ] that I can bounce it off, and we can discuss it and then try to hone it for the live show at the end of the week. But it took me longer than it should have to figue that out.
QHow does prepping a standup set that is so laser-focused on one town compare to a normal set at a club, where you can climb on stage and talk about literally anything?
AFor Still Standing, it’s like a cross between doing a set at a comedy club and giving a wedding speech. Everybody knows the reason why they’re there. Everybody knows why you’re getting up to say something — and that really is half the battle. I’m not gonna just get up and fie minutes later someone goes, “You suck!” We have the benefit of the act that we’re there to celebrate that community. I feel like people are on my side at the get-go, which makes all the difference as far as just how laser-sharp your material is.
And then, having those specific thins to dig into . . . Nazi U-boats or whatever it is, if what you’re there to talk about is fascinating, it doesn’t have to be, you know, a belly laugh. If it’s interesting, that carries itself. It’s already entertainment, and then it’s just that much easier to try to make it funny.
