EDITOR’S NOTE

HIGH-SPEED HOME RENOVATIONS

Fans of HGTV may recall that the network has experienced great success with its Crashers franchise, which included the series Room Crashers, Kitchen Crashers, Yard Crashers and Bath Crashers. Apparently, the time is ripe for more crashing, and this week brings the debut of Crashers. Tapped as host is New Kids on the Block’s Jonathan Knight, who’s already racked up HGTV cred with Farmhouse Fixer and Rock the Block. In those earlier series, unsuspecting homeowners received a free-of-charge renovation of a space of their choosing, which took place within a breakneck 72 hours. This 13-episode revival will follow a similar format, following Knight “as he ambushes folks anywhere from furniture boutiques to the hardware store or even the local paint shop to offer them a fast-paced reno with a catch,” per HGTV’s official synopsis. “Before the work begins, the homeowners must agree to three rules: the renovation starts immediately; they have no say in the design; and they must vacate their home for the full three days. Throughout the season, Jon will complete jaw-dropping whirlwind transformations, from beautiful backyards to dazzling kitchens, with the help of his team of skilled designers.”

MONDAY, 8 P.M., HGTV

Seventy-two hours is not a lot of time, and Knight is well aware that he’s got his work cut out for him.

“Everyone has that one space that really needs work,” he says. “But they have no time, no money and no idea where to start — and that’s where I come in. I love a challenge and especially one that’s going to change someone’s life in 72 hours.”

In the series opener, Knight accosts a California homeowner in a hardware store to offer a free kitchen upgrade. “With the help of his team, Jon will swiftly demo the space down to the studs and dream up a new layout to better serve the large family’s needs,” reads the episode’s description. “In just three days, he’ll deliver a completely renovated kitchen with optimized storage, brand-new appliances, functional banquette seating and a custom beverage station.”

THE WATCH LIST

FIT FOR A QUEEN

Canadian businesswoman Ann Kaplan Mulholland is back for a second season of this reality show chronicling the ambitious quest to transform a historic medieval castle in England into a swanky luxury hotel. “Following an inaugural season filled with sweeping renovations, lavish weddings, and the debut of the castle’s bar and bistro, Ann’s vision only grows more ambitious as she sets her sights on expanding her queendom,” declares the synopsis for season two, which features her hosting events ranging from opulent wellness retreats to high-fashion spectacles. “But ruling a castle is no small feat,” the synopsis continues. “Behind the grandeur lies a court of dedicated staff navigating tight timelines, shifting priorities and Ann’s ever-expanding decree of ideas. With her husband Dr. Stephen Mulholland — a world-renowned plastic surgeon — by her side, the pair continue their quest to breathe new life into the storied estate, proving that even centuries-old walls can bend to a bold, modern vision.”

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

TikTok restaurant reviewer Keith Lee, whose social media following exceeds 20 million, is the focus of this reality show that follows him as he travels the country with his family, going behind the scenes of his viral review process to discover standout local restaurants. This all leads to a life-changing decision about which few will earn a coveted spot at his Familee Day festival in New Orleans.

COP SWAP?

Known for Dr. Death and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Luke Kirby has been tapped as the new top cop on Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent, following original star Aden Young’s departure. Kirby and Young previously co-starred together on Rectify

I saw your report that Law & Order: Organized Crime got canned. But what’s going on with the absolute best show in the franchise, L&O Toronto?

—C.B., North Vancouver

Citytv’s Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent wrapped season three in mid-May, and we’re happy to report it’s been renewed for a fourth. That said, there will be a new cop on the beat when the show returns in 2027. Per the Toronto Sun, leading man Aden Young, who’s played DS Henry Graff since episode on, has chosen to depart. Replacing him will be fellow Canadian Luke Kirby as DS John Darcy, who is transferred in from the “Gangs & Guns” unit to be DS Frankie Bateman’s (Kathleen Munroe) new partner. Said creator Tassie Cameron in a release: “From the moment we began imagining this next chapter, Luke stood out as the ideal choice. He brings a sharp intelligence and emotional depth that perfectly aligns with the kind of storytelling Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent is known for.”

A Hardy Farewell?

Just checking in to see what’s going on with MobLand? Hoping it’s not cancelled, since it was one of last year’s finest

—J.M., Kamloops

Paramount+’s hit U.K. crime thriller — which broke records when it premiered on the streamer in 2025 — will return for a second season sometime in late 2026. What’s more, while not officially greenlit, third season is reportedly in development. Alas, word has just come out that if and when season three does debut, No. 1 on the callsheet Tom Hardy will not be a part of it. For season one and the forthcoming season two, Hardy has led the ensemble as Harry Da Souza, an underworld fier who must keep the lid on a gang war between his hotheaded bosses the Harrigans (Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan) and various rival factions on both sides of the law. Variety reports that Hardy was “not asked to return to the series following on-set issues with executive producer Jez Butterworth, 101 Studios and others.” Meanwhile, the Daily Mail gossips that Hardy rubbed his co-workers the wrong way with his “arrogant” demeanour, frequent lateness and unsolicited script notes. While those reports are unconfirmed, its not the firs time Hardy has clashed with his set-mates. Most notoriously, he and Charlize Theron reportedly butted heads during filming on 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road

Follow-up Far, Far Away . . .?

We just caught The Mandalorian and Grogu at the theatres. Now I’m wondering what’s going on with the TV show version . . . and also that Ahsoka show? It’s been a lonnnggg time . . . —O.F., Vancouver Island

The small-screen future of Mando (Pedro Pascal) and Grogu (a.k.a. Baby Yoda) is uncertain. Season three of The Mandalorian streamed

Being of Asian heritage, I remember the movie Flower Drum Song as being the first film populat with people who looked like me. I loved its star, Nancy Kwan. Did she make other musicals?
–D.M., Vancouver

Flower Drum Song hit theatres in 1961, having been inspired by a 1959 Broadway romp from Rodgers & Hammerstein. It was the first .S.produced movie that starred a largely Asian-American cast, with 22-year-old Kwan (who was born in Hong Kong) leading the way.

The story opens on Mei Li (Miyoshi Umeki), an illegal immigrant from China whose father brought her to America and promised her hand in an arranged marriage to Sammy Fong (Jack Soo, who later became Lt. Yemana on Barney Miller). Sammy owns a nightclub and is already involved with its head showgirl Linda Low (Nancy Kwan). Despite Sammy’s attempts at dissolving the marriage contract, things become far

on Disney+ in spring 2023. Creators Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni had reportedly done a significant amount of development and writing on a potential fourth season before they were directed by Disney to bring the fan-fave characters to the multiplex for a feature film instead. With The Mandalorian and Grogu still in the midst of its box-office run, only tim will tell whether the Mouse House plans to bring the duo back to the small screen, or keep them on the big one.

Speaking of Star Wars TV shows, most of the

more complicated than expected, and soon enough several family members are challenged by the differences between Asian tradition and true love. The film was nominated for five Oscars two Golden Globes and one Grammy.

Nancy Kwan did not make another musical after Flower Drum Song. In fact, she didn’t even do her own singing in the picture, her songs having been dubbed by B.J. Baker — best known as the singing voice of Wilma on The Flintstones

Groundbreaking though Flower Drum Song was, it would be more than 30 years before another American movie with a contemporary narrative and an Asian cast became a reality — The Joy Luck Club in 1993.

live-action ones have either ended or been cancelled, including Andor, Skeleton Crew, Obi-Wan Kenobi and The Acolyte. One that thankfully hasn’t is Ahsoka — though, as you noted, it’s been on an extended hiatus, having last streamed, like Mandalorian, in 2023. But we now have word it’s set for a return to Disney+ sometime in 2027.

The series, starring Rosario Dawson as a former Jedi making her way in a fractured galaxy, ended with the daunting arrival of General Thrawn (Lars

Mikkelsen) — a prominent character from fan-fave animated series The Clone Wars, who is looking to restore the toppled Empire to its former glory/infamy.

Very few details on season two of Ahsoka have yet been revealed. But we do know that Canadian Hayden Christensen will return as Ahsoka’s former mentor Anakin Skywalker (a.k.a. Darth Vader) in an expanded role. What’s more, Game of Thrones alum Rory McCann will replace the late Ray Stevenson as fallen Jedi knight Baylan Skoll.

This Is the Rhythm of the Night!

Is it season three of Interview With the Vampire? Is it season one of The Vampire Lestat? Ah, let’s call it both! Either way, after sitting out most of Interview’s second season, sultry bloodsucker Lestat (Sam Reid) is back.

With the narrative now fully in modern day, our centuriesspanning ghoul is lead singer in a rock band (an ideal outlet for his self-absorption). And when it comes to the age-old wisdom, “Live fast, die young and leave a good-looking corpse,” well . . . Lestat has ticked all boxes.

Per AMC’s release, in this “rock-and-roll-centric season, the Vampire Lestat goes on an electric multi-city tour while being haunted by ‘muses’ from his wild and rebellious past. As his band’s popularity and star power rises, so does Lestat’s influene over vampires and humans alike, leaving others to contend with Lestat’s power in the face of the Great Conversion, an unnatural surge in the vampire population.”

Lest you lament that the show’s title change might leave other beloved fiends off the set list Jacob Anderson also returns as Lestat’s death-long frenemy Louis — and the two of them definitely have some issues to sort out with their rivalry/codependency. Also back is Eric Bogosian as interviewer of vampires turned vampire himself Daniel Molloy. And indeed, the publication of Molloy’s tell-all book creates threats for the vamps of the world that are tougher to handle than torches and pitchforks.

We’ll also delve deeper into Lestat’s twisted origins, via the introduction of his human mother/ fist person he ever made into a vampire, Gabriella (Pride and Prejudice’s Jennifer Ehle).

WEDNESDAY, APPLE TV

Following a well-received run on the festival circuit, this pulsepounding flick from up-and-coming director Izabel Pakzad hits streaming via both AMC+ and its horror-centric sister Shudder. It follows five young L.A. gals Bella Thorne, Helena Howard, Zión Moreno, Chloe Cherry, Sophia Ali) who look to cut loose with a trip to Joshua Tree. But when they stop in a remote desert town, they run afoul of the locals — igniting a fight for survival with not just the townsfolk but each other, as long-buried tensions are dredged to the surface. In a statement, Pakzad said she aimed to make a film that was “ra, unapologetic and bold,” challenging the role women typically play in genre films. What’s more, she based this story on a real incident that rocked her own life while on vacay with friends. As Pakzad told Variety: “The Airbnb was on a dead end, of course. So you pull out of the driveway, and there’s this green Mustang that’s waiting outside on the street. He puts his brights on, turns his car and blocks me into the dead end. Immediately, I knew something was weird . . . this feels premeditated, something is wrong. On instinct, I just took the car and drove around him — right on the neighbour’s lawn — and just started speeding. But then it turned into a 100 mph car chase on the Joshua Tree freeway, where he was trying to swerve into my car, swerve me off the road. e were trying to call the police, but we had no service. Eventually, we saw a car in the distance and I just started calling for help and honking, and then he ended up turning around. But it was the most terrifying seven minutes of my life.”

The last remaining spinoff of Starz’ smash hit crime saga Power unleashes its fifth an final season. The ’90s-set pequel about the ignominious rise of Queens kingpin Kanan Stark (Mekai Curtis) will wrap with eight total episodes. Season four ended with a showdown between Kanan and his mother/drug game mentor Raq Thomas (Patina Miller) — which left the latter’s fate up in the air. But it won’t surprise longtime fans to learn Raq lived to fiht another day. And now that things have soured between mother and son, there’s an epic Power struggle on the horizon, one which will complete Kanan’s transformation from conflicted by to the ruthless man we met in the original series (as played by 50 Cent).

Every Year After

WEDNESDAY, PRIME VIDEO

Per Starz’ press release: “Kanan solidifies his place in the Queens drug game alongside Breeze [Shameik Moore], the Southside legend, and their alliance sets the stage for a reckoning that will ripple through every player in this dangerous business. Many sacrifies will be made, whether it’s the Thomas family facing the collapse of their reign, Unique [Joey Bada$$] fihting to preserve his legacy or the Mafia manoeuvring behind the scenes. However, nothing will stand in the way of Kanan’s pursuit of power. After all, this isn’t the end for Kanan Stark. It’s just the beginning.”

On that note, despite this rapidly approaching ending, fans of the brand can rest easy: there are two fresh spinoffs in the works for 2026 and 2027.

The Time of Their Loves

Based on Carley Fortune’s bestseller Every Summer After, this eight-part series is a “romantic, nostalgic story of first loves, and the people and choi es that mark us forever.” It’s told over the course of six years and one week in the lake town of Barry’s Bay, centring on young couple Percy (Sadie Soverall) and Sam (Matt Cornett) as they grapple with the complexities of living and loving. Helming it all is Amy B. Harris, a former writer on Sex and the City and creator of its teen spinoff The Carrie Diaries

COMEDIES Hot

Age Is Just a Blunder

So-called “May-December romances” are tricky at the best of times. And in Disney+’s Alice and Steve, these are not the best of times. Indeed, the six-part U.K. dramedy poses the question: what if your best friend started dating your daughter.

Unforgotten alum Nicola Walker plays Alice, who is flabbegasted and devastated to learn her longtime pal Steve (Flight of the Conchords’ Jemaine Clement) has begun courting her 26-year-old daughter Izzy (House of David’s Yali Topol Margalith).

On the verge of losing both her best friend and her daughter, Alice sets out to sabotage this bad romance, at any cost. But, knowing Alice as well as he does,

Steve is prepared to fend off he assault.

Described as an “anti-romantic comedy,” Alice and Steve is billed by Disney as a “hilarious, messy and complicated exploration of friendship, family and love . . . that asks the question, ‘How far would you go for love — or revenge?’”

The series sprang from the mind of Sophie Goodhart, who previously waxed comedic on matters of the heart as a writer on Netflixs Sex Education

Speaking with Collider, she illuminated an approach to penning the show’s scripts that gave equal consideration and credence to each of the main characters. “I’m totally characterdriven,” Goodhart explained. “When I write the drafts, I’ll write a draft from each character’s point of view. So, I’ll do the Alice pass and then the Steve pass and then the Izzy pass . . . I really like the idea of us discovering that we’re rooting for a different character, and not always being within one person’s head.”

GREENER PASTURES

He was nothing less than a game-changer on the entertainment scene of the 1990s and early 2000s with his Ottawa publicaccess series turned MTV juggernaut The Tom Green Show taking shock comedy to new highs (or lows, depending on your disposition).

After some time away from the spotlight, Tom Green returned in 2025 with Prime Video reality series Tom Green Country, about the funnyman’s decision to leave Hollywood and start over at a farm he bought in his old clomping grounds of rural Ontario. That particular show did not get a second season, but now Green has another one — on the same farm, but on a new platform: Crave.

Debuting May 29, with two new episodes per week dropping on the Crave streamer (Fridays) and Crave1 cable channel (Wednesdays), The Tom Green Farm is a talk show that sees its titular star inviting celebs like Dan Aykroyd, Jay Baruchel, Paul “Biz Nasty” Bissonnette, Michael Cera and Tony Hawk to sit a spell and have a chat — all the while grappling with the befuddling realities of running a farm and major life milestones like gettin’ hitched.

The animated outer-space absurdity continues with an episode that’s summarized, in the show’s usual playfully opaque fashion, as: “You haven’t lived till you’ve chested up at Trader Joe’s, broh.” Meanwhile, the episode’s title is “Rick Fu Hustle,” a reference to Hong Kong auteur Stephen Chow’s 2004 comedic martial arts masterpiece Kung Fu Hustle.

WEDNESDAY, APPLE TV

Paula (Tatiana Maslany) continues tumbling down the rabbit hole, as her illadvised online tryst with a murdered “cam boy” spirals further and further out of control.

This week, putting her skillset as a fact-checker to good use, Paula closes in on some key figues in the dearly departed Trevor’s (Brandon Flynn) blackmail scheme. Of course, the criminal conspiracy of it all is only one small part of Paula’s waking nightmare. Her custody battle is also ratcheting up, which puts her in the pride-swallowing position of having to find some ellow moms to speak to the strength of her character. Meanwhile, her ex-husband’s new wife Mallory (Jessy Hodges),

WEDNESDAY,

more determined than ever to replace Paula as young Hazel’s (Nola Wallace) one and only mama bear, dusts herself off after last eek’s attack and shows how ruthless she herself can be.

All told, thus far the series has proven itself to be a deliciously unpredictable mix of genres, tones and plot twists — all capably held together by Emmy-winning Canadian leading lady Maslany. As creator David J. Rosen put it in a chat with Gold Derby: “There’s comedy, there’s thriller, there’s heartbreak and Tatiana really is amazing at being able to pivot between emotions and to make you feel and root for her. She exudes this vulnerability that could turn into a rage . . . I just knew that the character of Paula was someone who was going to do bad things and you’d want to have to follow her wherever she was going anyway . . . ”

Courting Disaster?

The saga of overlooked Pride and Prejudice sibling Mary Bennet (Ella Bruccoleri) continues with an episode that finds our unassuming yet secretly remarkabl heroine getting intimate with the charmingly nerdy Mr. Hayward (Dónal Finn) in the Lake District. But when the dashing Mr. Ryder (Laurie Davidson) shows up unexpectedly, their “growing connection” begins to recede. Will this courtship conundrum scuttle Mary’s quest for “love, independence and the self-worth she’s long been denied?”

Living Clean

Canadian home reno guru

Kortney Wilson on how cleaning up your living space can clean up your

life

Q You came to the world of reno in a very roundabout way. You started out wanting to be a singer.

A Oh my goodness. That’s the understatement of the year. I feel like everybody could say some version of that for themselves and their careers . . . I’ve always been not afraid to take a step forward and try new things. But for sure, when I moved to Nashville 27 years ago, I never thought that this is where I would be — ever. For better or worse, I went there to be an artist and I had my eye on the prize. But dreams, they break and they fall apart and they come true, and they do all the things that they’re supposed to do to teach us all of life’s lessons.

Q

Looking at this latest show, is it safe to say you’ve had to pivot more than once amidst the “messiness” of life?

A This is not really just a home renovation show. This is about redefining “hom.” This is about renovating somebody’s trailer as much as it is their little mega-mansion. Not everybody owns their house, but we all deserve to go home and feel at peace to grieve or to dream or to hope. And I was grateful and lucky enough in my divorce and the years that followed — that were probably the roughest of my life — to have a place to go home to that felt like home. Now, I really wanna bring that in a relatable way to people. My divorce was definitel that moment of feeling like I was picking up the

pieces. There have been a couple other moments where I’ve literally fallen to my knees and I just didn’t know who I was and what I wanted. I’m on the other side of that, and I feel like this is the right timing for me to be a part of something like Life Is Messy . . . ’cause, damn, life is messy.

QWhat makes this series stand out from other reno shows? Beyond just sprucing things up, there’s a therapy aspect at play here.

AWell, you don’t have to have $100,000 to do a renovation. I wanna tell people’s stories. I want to grieve with them, and I want to help them understand that it just takes a step forward. And sometimes that’s a step out of the messy house or the messy pantry . . . If you can’t see the floor in your own house, I don’t know how you function out of something like that. I watch friends who are living an episode of Hoarders. They’re good friends of mine, and they’re talented and smart, but they can’t seem to take a step forward out of it . . .

You know, I’m a certified acial therapist, but I’m not a doctor. I wanna be your support system with a bunch of tools in my bucket to help take that step forward — because people did that for me. I had girlfriends show up at my house and say, “OK, let’s go. Enough is enough.” I had a date. I hadn’t gone on a date in 18 months, and my girlfriends were there to say, “You’re ready. You can do this.” I went on a date and [now] I’m married to the guy!

YOUR WEEKLY SCOOP ON NEW TV PROJECTS IN THE WORKS

HAVING BEEN A REGULAR

on Curb Your Enthusiasm since 2007 — and soon to be seen in Larry David’s upcoming HBO series, Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness — J.B. Smoove has just entered into a deal with Fox Entertainment Studios.

Smoove Move

Under the partnership, Smoove will serve as “executive producer and creative collaborator on an unscripted slate of programming that will span a range of formats and genres.” Smoove’s production company, Alternate Side Productions, will executive produce all projects generated under the deal, with Smoove, Rick Dorfman and Miles Grose serving as executive producers, with all projects to emerge from this partnership to fall under Fox Entertainment Studios banner.

“The agreement marks a new collaboration between Smoove and Fox Entertainment Studios, further expanding the studio’s commitment to creatordriven, talent-led unscripted programming,” declares the press release.

“J.B. brings an unmistakable comedic voice and a fearless, spontaneous energy that makes him a natural fit or the

unscripted genre,” says Allison Wallach, Fox Entertainment Studio’s head of unscripted programming. “Together with Rick, Miles and the team at Alternate Side Productions, J.B. has a sharp eye for original concepts and an ability to connect with audiences in a way that feels fresh, energizing and highly entertaining. We’re excited to build a slate that fully taps into that original perspective.”

As a comedian, actor and writer (he spent several seasons writing on Saturday Night Live), creating unscripted reality programming might seem to be outside of his wheelhouse, but Smoove insists he’s the right guy for the job. “Let me tell you something . . . unscripted is where the magic really happens,” he says. “You can’t plan it, you can’t fake it, you just gotta jump in and let it fl. That’s my lane! Partnering with Allison and the Fox Entertainment Studios crew gives us the space to get wild with ideas, find the funy in real life, and bring some shows to the screen that people didn’t even know they needed yet. We’re going to have a lot of fun with this.”

Curb Your Enthusiasm funnyman J.B. Smoove has just signed a new deal to create unscripted series for Fox Entertainment Studios.

LAUNCHING SKYWARD

Tomorrow Studios, producers of Netflix hit One Piece, have honed in on their next project: a television adaptation of Skyward, the first book in bestselling author Brandon Sanderson‘s Cytoverse franchise. Sanderson is attached to write the pilot script, alongside writer/producers Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen (whose credits include Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.).

In the sci-fi book series, humanity is trapped on a harsh planet and constantly under attack by mysterious alien forces. The story follows Spensa Nightshade, a determined pilot who dreams of joining the fighter corps to defend humanity and redeem her disgraced father’s legacy. “Blending high-stakes aerial combat, advanced technology and themes of courage, identity and discovery, the series explores both the secrets of the galaxy and Spensa’s growth from an outsider into a key figure in humanity’s fight for survival” notes the logline.

“Brandon has created a thrilling universe where courage, curiosity and determination to challenge

LONE STAR ANATOMY

what we think can change the fate of entire worlds,” said Tomorrow Studios’ CEO/partner Marty Adelstein and president/partner Becky Clements in a joint statement. “The vision that he, Jed and Maurissa have for a television adaptation is ‘defiant to the end’”

Sanderson, who works primarily in the fantasy and sci-fi genres, has sold more than 50 million books. His upcoming Cosmere novel, The Fires of December, is scheduled for release later this year.

For the author, the opportunity to adapt the first book in his series for the screen has bee a long time coming. “I’ve been working on the Skyward series for nearly a decade, and to have a partner like Tomorrow Studios to help bring this story to television is a dream come true,” Sanderson says.

In addition to One Piece, which is headed into its third season on Netflix, omorrow Studios has also produced The Better Sister for Amazon’s Prime Video and Physical for Apple TV.

As Grey’s Anatomy keeps on chugging, with its 23rd season arriving this fall, ABC has just greenlit a new spinoff co-created by Shonda Rhimes and Meg Marinis, with the latter serving as showrunner. According to the logline for the as-yet-untitled series, the “edgy drama” will focus on a team of doctors working at a medical centre in rural West Texas, described as “the last chance for care before miles of nowhere.”

This marks the third series to spin off from Grey’s Anatomy, following Private Practice and Station 19.

“I am incredibly excited to expand the Grey’s Anatomy universe,” says Marinis. “This opportunity will bring new characters and stories to life that will embody the same heart, emotion

and connection audiences have loved from Grey’s for more than two decades — all set in my home state of Texas. I am so grateful to Shonda Rhimes for creating this dynamic world and feel so fortunate that I get to be a part of it.”

The spinoff will liely arrive at some point in 2027. No word yet on whether any Grey’s characters — either currently in the show, or from the past — will be featured in the new series, although rumour has it that the spinoff will liely connect to the world of Grey’s Anatomy via one or more characters, possibly Debbie Allen’s Catherine Fox.

Shondaland and 20th Television will produce, with Rhimes and Maranis as executive producers, alongside Betsy Beers and Grey’s star Ellen Pompeo

For All Mankind spinoff Star City showcases the Cold War Space Race from the Soviet perspective

S FOR ALL MANKIND ANNOUNCES

ITS FINAL

SEASON

, which takes the alt-history series into the present, series creators Matt Wolpert and Ben Nedivi turn back the clock and return to where it all began. The difference is that this time we get to go behind enemy lines in the Space Race. “As we were working on For All Mankind, we couldn’t help but learn about the Soviet space program,” says Wolpert. “What was fascinating was just how secretive and controlled it was.

The program was the crown jewel of the Soviet Empire, at that time, because it was used as a way to show the superiority of their system. And in that battle for the hearts and minds, there was no greater weapon they had than the inspiration that was caused by all the achievements they made.”

While the alternate history shows the Soviets reaching the moon fist, the rest of the actions onscreen feel remarkably accurate to what even the most casual viewer understands to be true about the Cold War era. “I think we feel a responsibility to be even more accurate to the time because it’s alternate history,” says Nedivi. “In a day and age where we don’t know what’s real and fake anymore in our current society, I think we feel this responsibility to make sure this does feel real. And just like For All Mankind, the authenticity and the research that’s put into everything we put on screen is even more so on Star City. The difference is when we started this process, we didn’t know a lot about the history.”

While the Apollo program is well documented, what we know about the Soviet Space Race is far more limited. “This is much more secretive, there’s hardly any [documentation],” says Nedivi. “Most people weren’t even

City

aware of this city hidden in the woods outside of Moscow. The opportunity here was to tell a story that, while true, most people don’t know about.” And, unlike For All Mankind, which highlighted fictional emale potential within the space program, Star City demonstrates what equality looked like in the real-life USSR. “There was a tradition, from the revolution on, of women picking up weapons alongside men. There were female pilots called the Night Witches in World War II that terrorized Germany. Beyond

Alice Englert portrays Anastasia Belikova, an untested female cosmonaut in the Soviet space program who is destined to make history.

that, there were more female doctors, lawyers and teachers, but, of course, we still wanted to be accurate to a level of misogyny, even there,” says Wolpert. “It’s that duality that I think makes it a really interesting tableau to tell these stories in.”

The series stars Rhys Ifans as Chief Designer, the head of the space program, based on real-life Soviet engineer Sergei Korolev. While a fan of the mothership, the spinoff eels like a different entity to the Welsh actor. “I love the velocity at which the story is told,” he said. “Not a scene goes by without a huge turn of events. There’s a clock ticking in Star City and it ticks at a different rate to the clock that ticks in For All Mankind. There’s an urgency, and there’s a historical urgency as well because of course the state of the world in the USSR was coming to an end. We know that now. So, there was an urgency to get things done

and get them done quickly.”

Expectations for the space program follow the same course as many other matters in the USSR. “Chief Designer’s a genius and he wants to take humans to space, to the moon and to other planets and be a pioneer and an adventurer. That’s his drive beyond his attachment to any nation, but he’s unable to do that, of course, without state support,” explains

Anna Maxwell Martin plays Lyudmilla Raskova, a cutthroat and ambitious KGB surveillance offic.

Ifans. “But he’s working with a state that makes impossible demands on him, a state that asks him to celebrate a day on the calendar, assuming he can just [launch missions] at the drop of a hat, and that happened. People were sent into space without space suits sometimes. It was a renegade operation, which of course made it thrilling and exciting, but very, very dangerous.”

At the top of the call sheet, Ifans is joined by Anna Maxwell Martin (The Bletchley Circle) as Lyudmilla Raskova, the chilling head of the KGB surveillance department in Star City. “The thing that Matt, Ben and I all agreed on is that really we keep the powder very dry on Lyudmilla until very late in the season,” says the actress. “I didn’t want to reveal anything about her. I wanted her to seem like the monster that she is, so that when the reveal comes of what drives her or her vulnerability, that means a lot and is an event in the show. Then, if and when she loses her cool, it really means a lot. In a character like that, you have to maintain really high status for a long period of time and show nothing until you’re forced into doing otherwise.”

Unlike the format of their other show, Nedivi and Wolpert do not intend to jump a decade ahead each season, should they be able to continue telling this story. “I think we’d want to stay within the ’70s,” says Nedivi. “That speaks to the larger goal here of not making a show that just feels like it’s mirroring the For All Mankind timeline and what happens there with each decade. Our hope is even with

this season, while there’s connective tissue between the two shows, it very much stands on its own two feet.”

For the two creators, there is still plenty to mine from 1970s-era USSR. “In the alternate history of For All Mankind, once they landed on the moon fist, the Soviet program boomed. In reality, it did not. It fell apart the moment Sergei Korolev died. So, the ability to tell the story of them doing these explorations into space that never actually happened, made this the perfect period to set this in. It also brings us back selfishly to a period that we’re very nostalgic for ourselves, as writers. To have an opportunity to bring to life these ships and designs that the Soviets and Sergei Korolov were dreaming of is really exciting and has reinvigorated us, not only for Star City, but also for the end of For All Mankind.”

Rhys Ifans is Chief Designer, head of the Soviet space program.

BLAST FROM THE PAST

MILLIONS OF years after their extinction, we remain fascinated by dinosaurs. These prehistoric beasts have permeated pop culture, in projects ranging from umpteen Jurassic Park movies to The Flintstones, while new paleontological discoveries continue to shape our ever-evolving understanding of what they may have looked like and how they lived.

Surviving Earth, a new eight-part series spearheaded by Tim Haines — who brought us the groundbreaking series Walking With Dinosaurs back in 1999 — promises to increase that knowledge even further, by transporting viewers millions of years into the past to witness the extraordinary resilience of life on Earth. “Embracing cutting-edge visual effects with breathtaking stories of triumph, the natural history series recreates the ancient landscapes and strange creatures that once ruled the planet — and shows how they fought to survive during times of extreme upheaval,” declares the synopsis.

“Surviving Earth is a landmark series showcasing how life not only survived but thrived through Earth’s most catastrophic environmental crises,” the synopsis continues.

“Using cutting-edge CGI, viewers are transported back to a world of never-before-seen creatures and their remarkable survival stories. From the giant sea scorpions of 450 million years ago to the mighty mammoths and sabertooths of 450,000 years ago, Earth’s epic story is vividly brought to life. Traverse landscapes shaped by meteoric strikes, volcanic eruptions, plunging sea levels and scorching heat storms.”

According to Haines — creative director at U.K.-based production company Loud Minds — looking back at how some species managed to survive the various mass-extinction events that have occurred on Planet Earth is more timely than ever. “In an age when there is so much concern about our changing climate, if we want to know our future we have to understand our past,” he says.

Surviving Earth

THURSDAY, 8 P.M., CITY & NBC

Utilizing cutting-edge digital technology, each episode of Surviving Earth introduces viewers to the bizarre and amazing creatures who populated a vibrant lost world. Viewers will experience how life found a way and survived on a planet where meteors fall, super-volcanoes erupt, seas boil and the land literally moves, told through the stories of the survivors, fihters and lucky ones that shaped the world we live in today.

“This epic event series promises to be unlike anything we’ve seen before, with state-of-the-art technology recreating an immersive view of prehistoric Earth,” says Rod Aissa, executive vice president of unscripted content with NBCUniversal Television and Streaming. “With a project of this magnitude, we’re in excellent hands with Universal Television Alternative Studio and Loud Minds onboard bringing it to life.”

The South American sabertooth tiger has been extinct for over 10,000 years.

CGI technology has developed significantly in the 20-plus ears since Walking With Dinosaurs, which allowed Haines and his crew to film in various locations throughout the world, blending that footage with CGI. Those locations, intended to replicate conditions at various points in the planet’s history, included Iceland, Malta, California, Ecuador, Brazil and Northern Canada, with the latter filling in or the Ice Age.

Surviving Earth marks NBC’s second major nature docuseries, following the massive success of last year’s The Americas, which reportedly averaged 5.5 million viewers and has been watched by more than 50 million worldwide.

Shelby Saftel, NBCUniversal Entertainment’s senior VP of alternative programming and development, is hopeful that Surviving Earth will do even better. “You know that you have something special when you start getting texts from all kinds of different people in your lives,” Shaftel tells The Hollywood Reporter, recalling the response he received from The Americas. “I’m in a phase where a lot of my friends have little kids. … They’re watching with their whole families, and that’s really special. That’s what we do this for, and to know people are watching and connecting with it, it’s the best.”

Describing NBC’s foray into bigbudget, years-in-the-making nature docuseries as “a giant experiment,” Shaftel points out that Surviving Earth is light years away from The Americas. “It’s a very different proposition — all CGI,” she explains. “It’s on the history of the planet, on cataclysms that have wiped out species, and about how those very few species have survived and thrived and become who we are today. It’s very much a look into the past . . . and it’s another big, exciting swing for us.”

WHEN JIM RASH WROTE HIS LATEST

film Miss You, Love You, about a personal assistant who is sent to help plan the funeral of his employer’s stepfather, the Academy Award-winning screenwriter did not have to go far for inspiration. “The very simple premise of the assistant coming was the funeral for my [own] father,” says Rash. “My sister had a work thing going on, so she brought her assistant, who no one knew — he didn’t know anyone in the room —and I thought that was such an interesting lens, to see [us] when we’re at our most vulnerable, and the roller coaster as we dealt with our emotions. That’s where I started.”

Allison Janney portrays Diane, a grieving widow who’s just lost her husband to Parkinson’s.

RIEF

In the film, Allison Janney plays Diane, a woman who has lost her husband to Parkinson’s disease, while Andrew Rannells is Jamie, the assistant of Diane’s estranged son Tyler, who arrives in his stead. The project initially started as an experiment to write a play. “Then the pandemic hit and I was like, ‘Well, while we’re in our homes, I’ll turn it into a screenplay,’” says Rash. Then, when Rannells and Janney signed on, the actors decided to take a theatre-like approach to the project. “We were very fortunate that [Jim] gave us the time and the space to really rehearse it like a play,” says Rannells.

“Allison and I spoke before we got started and we both had the same idea, that the only way to do this was to memorize the entire script like a play.”

For Janney, an entertainment industry veteran known for her award-winning roles in The West Wing and Mom, the project was a series of fists. “This is the fist time I’ve done something like this where we took all of January of 2024 to memorize the entire script, and when we showed up in Albuquerque, we hit the ground running, ready to play,” she says. The scope of the role was also something that excited Janney. “I’ve never been offered a role of this size and the scope of Diane’s journey is quite extraordinary,” she says. “I was a little intimidated but also really excited about the challenge of doing a role like this and getting to do it with Andrew. Everything about it was so appealing, because Jim’s writing is so perfect and there’s not any fat in there, anywhere.”

In her son’s assistant, Diane finds the opportune vehicle for expressing

all her resentment and anger. “It was the perfect dynamic for her to just take out everything on him. And, as a result, they learned a lot about each other,” says Janney. Jamie, says Rash, is a character that he based on himself. “It’s fin. Writing is therapy,” deadpans Rash. “But you know, you pull from what you know, and then of course they elevate it and make it their own from there.” Rannells did not find it hard to relate to the character Rash had written for him. “I think that was a big part of why I was so attracted to it, because I recognized myself in Jamie and in Diane. They’re both people that feel like they can just do it alone. And of course that’s not the case,” he says.

“I certainly have gone through periods of my life where it feels easier to not share with people and you don’t want to be a burden, and then you find yourself opening up to a total stranger — someone next to you on a plane or a barber — and you’re crying in front of someone you’ve never met before.”

While Rannells could imagine being friends with his character, Janney believes Diane and Allison are not a match made in friendship heaven. “I feel like Diane wouldn’t like me,” she says. “Because I talk about feelings all the time — I think she wouldn’t want

She’s prickly, very prickly, which makes her fun to play for me, because I get to be prickly, which it’s fun to be.” Indeed, the exercise felt cathartic for the actress. “What was fun in playing Diane, is getting to let some of my inner anger out at family members

that I had in my mind who were very many different people at many different parts in the film.

The decision for Tyler (depicted by Rash’s friend Tyler Barnes in photographs) not to attend Diane’s husband’s funeral makes him come across as an unsympathetic character, but as the film ivestigates the reason for his absence, and the relationship between mother and son, perceptions may change. “Diane’s feeling agitated by the situation by which her son has chosen to put her in, on top of grief, on top of three years in an environment that she didn’t totally choose,” says Rash. “But when we learn the context of someone

Rash, perhaps best known for his role on Community and his screenplay for The Descendants which won him and co-writer Nat Faxon the Academy Award in 2012 — recognizes that even the most tragic moments are accompanied by humour. “Your most vulnerable place is grief, but at the same time, there’s always this hovering desire to laugh, it could be something we feel has to be so serious, but all of a sudden something humorous happens,” he says. “The person who has left most likely would prefer that we’re laughing, enjoying and celebrating and all the things that we try to get back. And grief is not just the death of someone — it’s the loss of love, it’s the loss of a mother/ son connection. It’s just a past we can’t get back to.”

Q

A LAST WORD THE

Q Do you think there’s something about the Canadian sense of humour and the British sense of humour that just kind of syncs up?

A Yeah, growing up I remember being exposed to Monty Python in early high school. Some people in the States were aware of them, but I think it was much more popular in Canada. You know, we are a Commonwealth [nation]. So, yes . . . I think Canadians will like this show.

Q Does the fact that the series is set in Miami and features an international cast bouncing off one another, culturally and comedically, create a flavour you wouldn’t get if it were just set in the U.K.?

A That’s what makes this season different from prior seasons of this show. It’s been awhile since the last season; this is pretty much a standalone season in the sense that you don’t have to have seen any of the other ones to appreciate it. But the element that it adds is an international cast speaking the words of [creator] John

Paulo Costanzo

Morton — which are very specifi. It’s a very specific syle of writing. You have this soccer tournament that shall not be named — if you’ve seen the show, it’s bleeped out every time we mention it . . .

Q It starts with an “F.” That’s all I was able to make out . . .

A Maybe. It may end with an “A” . . . But yeah, I think there is a broad appeal. I don’t know if there’s any other show out there that’s specifically set in the orld of the . . . soccer tournament that’s about to happen. So, you have that. You have the fact that it’s an international cast. You have the fact that it’s John Morton, which means that it’s come out of

It’s more of a heightened naturalism . . . You’re like, ‘Oh my God, I know that guy’ or ‘I know that woman.’ And then you put them all together, they’re bouncing around like pinballs, and hilarity ensues.”

the brain of a genius. And you have Hugh Bonneville [as the leading man], who is a national treasure over there — and I think kind of over here, too. He has a very lovable brand — just who he is. So, it has a lot going for it.

Q

Beneath all the absurdity, what’s the aspect of the human experience being explored and satirized in Twenty Twenty Six?

A

On a broader scale, I don’t know. That’s a large question. On a smaller scale, the characters each feel like a real person has been boiled down to their essence — the thing that makes them kind of ridiculous — and that thing becomes who they are, all the time. It’s almost like clowning.

My character is an a**hole New York lawyer guy. And whatever those words mean — “a**hole New York lawyer” — that’s the pedal I get to hit every time I get to talk. There’s different variations, but they all feel heightened in the sense that it’s not naturalistic, this style. It’s more of a heightened naturalism. But it really does just make fun of people — and nobody is immune to it. From top to bottom, it feels like a writer is making fun of that “type” of person, and it feels accurate. You’re like, “Oh my God, I know that guy” or “I know that woman.” And then you put them all together, they’re bouncing around like pinballs, and hilarity ensues.

Q Do you think you could play an a**hole Connecticut lawyer, or is a**hole New York lawyer more your speed? Twenty Twenty Six

A Well, I live in New York, so there’s something specifi. That’s the thing that makes it so good. [John Morton] gets very specifi. Even when I read the breakdown . . . the character description was so long and so well-written that I was like, “I know exactly who this guy is.” And it made it really easy and really fun to play, because I didn’t have to make much up as far as who this guy was.

Q

One of the key elements of the show is David Tennant narrating all of Ian and the team’s antics — as if he’s a proper BBC documentarian narrating a lion stalking the Serengeti . . .

A I thought it was a little like [British children’s show] Peppa Pig. It’s absolutely what you just said — but I feel like it’s mixed with Peppa Pig in the sense that it’s narrating a lot of things that don’t need to be narrated. Like, “He’s walking into a conference room” . . . as he’s walking in.

David Tennant is so funny, and the narration is arguably the funniest and most well-written part of the show. It’s definitely hat makes it what it is, and different from other shows . . . He’s making fun of everything — and everybody. And again, all of it just goes back to John. The whole thing is, John

CURRENT GIG

Master satirist John Morton pens another mockumentary about the small human foibles and squabbles behind large-scale operations. After skewering the London Olympics in Twenty Twelve and the boardrooms of the BBC in W1A, Twenty Twenty Six picks back up with hapless bureaucrat Ian Fletcher (Downton Abbey’s Hugh Bonneville) as he skips across the pond to Miami, joining the oversight team tasked to organize the 2026 FIFA World Cup. A key member of that eclectic, dysfunctional group is hot-headed VP of business and legal affairs Nick Castellano, played by Canadian Paulo Costanzo.

Less than a week out from kick-off at the real-world World Cup, a marathon of all six episodes will run this Saturday morning on BBC First.

making fun of everything. What I realized when I started watching W1A — because they sent it with the audition — at fist I was like, “What is this?” And then I was like, “Oh my gosh, this is genius.” If you can get on the wavelength of John Morton, you realize that basically every single line is funny. And it’s not mean . . . it’s almost mean, maybe. It’s accurate.

Like, when he’s making fun of Americans, I think it’s hilarious. Some Americans might be offended by it, but there is something kind of, I don’t know, lighthearted . . .

QAs petty and dysfunctional as this oversight team is, are they able to stumble across a process that actually sort of functions? Is the show making a commentary on that at all?

A I like the arguments — everybody seems to think they know what’s right, and it seems like no one knows what’s right . . .

I’ve never worked in a conference room type environment. But I feel like it was the same with W1A Out of conflict omes better solutions sometimes. So, even

MEMORABLE ROLES

The pride of Brampton, Ontario, Paulo Costanzo has been a fixture of the North American film and TV landscape fo over two decades.

On the big screen, he had breakout supporting turns in early 2000s comedies Road Trip, Josie and the Pussycats and 40 Days and 40 Nights

On the small one, in 2004 he landed a series regular role in NBC’s short-lived Friends spinoff Joey, playing Matt LeBlanc’s hopelessly geeky nephew. In 2009, he joined medical dramedy Royal Pains — spending eight seasons as Evan, enterprising brother/business partner to the Hamptons’ resident “concierge doctor” Hank Lawson (Mark Feuerstein).

though it’s conflict, i’s productive. And by the end of the season, I think the main cast starts to gel more, and you can tell that they’ve hit a stride . . .

QLooking at your career in general, do you feel like you carry your Canadianness with you? We are so similar to the U.S., we can walk among them undetected . . . are people ever surprised when they find out you’re from north of the border?

A I think the cat’s out of the bag at this point. I’m proud to be Canadian . . . It’s funny, I was just thinking back to when I fist started acting, how I had to kind of modify my Canadian accent and drop certain things. You know how we say, “Grade Five, Grade Six, Grade Seven?” When I was in high school, I got a part in a Disney movie [My Date With the President’s Daughter] and I said, “Yeah, you know what it’s like to be in Grade 10?” They were like, “Cut!” And the script supervisor came over and they’re like, “It’s 10th Grade.” I’m like, “No, no, it’s Grade 10.” I didn’t even understand what she was talking about.

But I realized at that point that to work in the American film industr, I had to be aware that it is kind of like learning a new accent. Even though it’s perhaps less obvious than a British accent, it still is an accent — and I had to learn how to hide it. It’s kind of gone now, I think. I have trouble even imitating a Canadian accent . . . other than the word “about.”

The powerhouse of energy and life-long vibrancy

What are mitochondria, and how do we spark them?

They are like very tiny powerplants that produce energy in every living cell of our bodies. On average, every cell has 1,500 mitochondria. Can you imagine that for their extremely small size, it’s been said that they produce, gram for gram, 10,000–50,000 times more energy than the sun?

To say that mitochondria are important to human health is grossly understating their role in our

survival. We literally would not be alive without them. They convert our food into energy, so that every other function of our body can occur as it needs to. As we age, our ability to create healthy mitochondria to support our energy demands diminishes. And because about 90% of our cellular energy is produced by mitochondria, this decline can cause significant health issues
