EDITOR’S NOTE
NEW ROM-COM REVIVES A CLASSIC PREMISE
Jill (Zoey Deutch) is an aspiring pastry chef who’s grieving the devastating loss of her younger sister, Isabelle (Ciara Bravo). The two were closer than close; ever since they shared a bedroom as kids, Jill and Isabelle were best friends, sharing everything from fist kiss mishaps to dessert recipes and, above all else, an obsession with Top Chef. In order to cope with her grief, Jill regularly calls her late sister’s number, leaving voicemails detailing every aspect of her life as if Isabelle were still alive and able to listen.
Eventually, Isabelle’s phone number gets reassigned to Wes, a real estate agent played by Nick Robinson. As Wes beings to hear this mysterious stranger complain about her persnickety boss, Chef Bastien (Nick Offerman), recount her latest dating horror story and lament her seemingly impossible search for a breakfast taco in San Francisco, he can’t help but fall for her, sight unseen.
That’s when things become complicated in Voicemails for Isabelle, a charming new rom-com from writer-director Leah McKendrick (Scrambled). As McKendrick tells Tudum, watching a relationship develop between two people in different cities, via old-school voicemails, is an homage to such rom-com classics as Sleepless in Seattle and You’ve Got Mail.
VOICEMAILS FOR ISABELLE
FRIDAY, NETFLIX
“Voicemails cannot be edited or rewritten,” says McKendrick. “They’re usually messy, awkward, inarticulate — sometimes confessional. Like a stream of consciousness, they always go a little off the ails.”
Of course, this isn’t the fist time that Netflix viwers will witness two people falling in love without actually meeting face to face, given that’s also the premise of the streamer’s hit reality dating show Love Is Blind However, as McKendrick points out, there’s something universal about the concept that appeals to viewers. “I think we all want to believe that what makes us most special — most us — is that which cannot be seen,” she explains. “We all contain our own invisible, magic cocktail of heart and humour and whimsy and favorite movie quotes.”

In 2025, when leading man Reardon was forced to step back while undergoing cancer treatment, Luke Roberts was brought in as Det. Mark Hudson, new partner to four-legged crimesolver Rex. Reardon subsequently revealed his treatment had been successful and doctors had cleared him, but claimed producers decided to go “in a different directio” by sticking with Roberts. On the contrary. The hit reality show following Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac’s exploits with their Welsh soccer team — currently in its fifth season — has been renewed for three more, meaning Welcome to Wrexham will continue through to at least 2029.
Meanwhile, Reynolds has another, similar show in the works — one that will reunite the B.C.-born actor with his Deadpool & Wolverine co-star Hugh Jackman. The as-yet-untitled series focuses on the SailGP team that Jackman and Reynolds coown: the BONDS Flying Roos. Per the synopsis, this show “will see Australia’s fastest sailors travel the globe to face elite rivals while onboarding their world-famous owners, led on the water by driver and CEO Tom Slingsby, one of the most decorated sailors in history. The global racing season is defined by speed — a stadium-style championship where identical 50-foot catamarans race in close-to-shore courses at speeds of up to 100 km/h.”
“This is our first collaboratio since Deadpool & Wolverine and we once again anticipate action, comedy, heart but with a lot more water,” said Jackman and Reynolds in a joint statement. “And (fingers crossed) pirates. We hope there’s pirates in SailGP.”

As a longtime fan of doctor shows, I have been trying to recall a 1960s drama that seemed to be all about nurses, although I may be wrong about that. Any thoughts?
– E.N., South Surrey
The medical genre has been with us on television for generations, going back to the days when Dr. Kildare made the leap from radio in 1961 alongside new entry Ben Casey. In both those series, nurses took a backseat, deferring to the strong, handsome men with the white coats and stethoscopes. In 1962 came the series you’re likely thinking of: The Nurses, starring Zina Bethune as young nurse Gail Lucas, mentored by veteran nurse Liz Thorpe (Shirl Conway) in a bustling New York hospital.
The storylines, though not as graphic and true-to-life as today’s shows, were still hard-hitting, and gave a voice to the women who, as most would admit, were really the ones who made the wheels turn in
Comics Unleashed, ratings have been dismal. During its first week in the 11:3 p.m. timeslot, Unleashed was watched by a measly 878,000 viewers. That represents a staggering 87 per cent drop from the 6.7 million who tuned in for Stephen Colbert’s finalshow, and a 57 per cent plunge from The Late Show’s season average of 2.15 million.
The Late Show’s cancellation remains mired in controversy over claims it was politically motivated, although CBS execs stand by their assertion it was “a

Actors Joseph Campanella and Michael Tolan were brought in to play doctors, while the title was changed to The Doctors and the Nurses . This iteration ran for just one season, in 1965.
The network then did a major shuffle, reverting to the original title of The Nurses and casting new actresses in the lead roles. Meanwhile, the series was trimmed to a 30-minute format and shifted from primetime to daytime, competing with all the other soap operas of that era. Two years later, the show flatlined for good.

However, Colbert’s latenight rival Jimmy Kimmel insists this math is bogus, pointing to a 2023 New York Times report that CBS had then offered Colber a five-year contract, bu instead opted for three. “Am I to believe that over the course of those two years,
they suddenly started losing $40 million a year?” Kimmel mused to Vulture. “These are just made-up numbers.”
Kimmel also said he was told by ABC “quite specifically” that his show was still profitabl. “There are far more people watching late-night TV than there ever were, if you look at the number of views me and my colleagues get online every day and add in our linear-television ratings,” said Kimmel, before summing up: “We’re not just dying of natural causes. Like the play, the narrative is set in and around three pivotal events: the 2018 World Cup in Russia, the 2020 European Championship in England and the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Though 2018 in particular was considered an uplifting, miracle run, none of these tourneys ended with a trophy for the manager and his squad — but along the way Southgate was able to, some might say, change the game. services of psychologist Pippa Grange (Jodie Whittaker, of Doctor Who fame). Together, they worked with players on how to process the immense pressure that comes with representing your football-obsessed country on the world stage — and growing from defeat rather than being consumed by it.
As Carol Midgley of The Times summed up in her review (via RottenTomatoes): “Graham has guided his play from stage to screen with verve and conviction, with a script that is thoughtful and nimble on its feet, a story that is narratively about football but really about universal human psychology.”

Based on Coben’s 2023 bestseller of the same name, I Will Find You casts Avatar’s Sam Worthington as David, a man wrongly convicted for the murder of his own son. Rotting away in prison, David’s life and life sentence change in an instant when he gets a visit from his sister-in-law, Rachel (Severance breakout Britt Lower). An investigative reporter by trade, Rachel never truly believed David was guilty of this horrendous crime — and now, she has evidence to back up that gut instinct: a photograph that seems to show his late son is still alive.
Alas, that won’t be enough to have David’s case reopened, so he’ll need to seek his own justice. It’s time to bust out of those shackles and unravel whatever conspiracy destroyed his family. Working with Rachel and Rachel’s ex-partner Hayden (This Is Us alum Milo Ventimiglia ), our tortured hero will soon uncover an unbelievable truth.

The Aquatic & the Myopic
Author Shelby Van Pelt tells us about unpacking humanity through the eyes of an octopus in her hit novel turned hit fil
Q As a writer, what’s the value of having a character like Marcellus, who has an outsider’s POV on us humans?
Remarkably Bright Creatures
A I think my favourite thing about Marcellus is he’s curmudgeonly, yes, and he kind of looks down upon the humans, and he brings that perspective of just bafflement — le, “What are these humans doing? This makes no sense.” But there’s also a curiosity there . . . this childlike curiosity of trying to understand why humans are the way they are.
Stepping back from the perspective of humanity allows you to almost have higher standards for humans than we sometimes have for ourselves, and I think that’s one really great thing that Marcellus brings to the story. He’s not willing to accept that this is just how we are. He wants us to be better — and I don’t think we would get that if you didn’t start from the premise of him believing that octopuses are superior as a species.
Q And when Alfred Molina is voicing the octopus in question, that theory just inherently has credibility . . .
A Yes, well, it’s the second time that he has played an octopus [after Doc Ock in the Spider-Man movies], so he’s typecast now. He’s in the octopus cult. We’re not going to let him go!
Q The human star of this film is Sally Field. Was it a tad surreal when you found out,
not only is my book becoming a movie, it’s a Sally Field movie?!
A I could not imagine a better Tova. She was attached very early in the process. She read an early copy of the book and wanted to play the role. You know, as authors sometimes all we really want is for people to read our work and connect with it. And that’s almost my favourite part of it. Like, “Hey, Sally Field read my book . . . and she loved it!” All this other stuff is kind of icing on the cake — the fact that she’s able to inhabit the role so beautifully . . . And talk about Lewis Pullman as Cameron. His chemistry with Sally is so amazing. They were so much fun to watch together on set, and really bring a lot of humour to the movie. I mean, it’s a very funny movie. In addition to being one that will make you cry, it really will make you laugh, too.
Q Is it a difficult balance to stre when you’re telling a grounded story that also has this loopy little fantasy element of the octopus’ inner monologue — commenting on Cameron and Tova’s foibles?
A My favourite feedback that I get from readers is when they tell me that they forgot Marcellus was an octopus. And I think viewers of the film will xperience something very similar. It just has this one slightly fantasy element that we’re asking people to suspend disbelief on — and everything else is, as you said, so grounded.

YOUR WEEKLY SCOOP ON NEW TV PROJECTS IN THE WORKS
FAMED FOR HIS Momofuko
restaurant empire, chef David Chang has already captivated television viewers with his PBS series The Mind of a Chef and his Netflix oering Ugly Delicious. Now, Chang has announced an upcoming show for CNN that will combine food and travel.
According to the CNN release, Chang’s new series will reimagine what viewers expect from a food show, “ditching rankings, viral lists and online hype in favour of discovery, connection and the thrill of finding something eal.”
Chang’s Road Trip
Each episode will feature Chang driving throughout the U.S. to embrace the unpredictability of the road, shunning modern technology in order to discover some true spontaneity. “With no reliance on pre-planned itineraries or internet recommendations, he and a rotating crew of friends follow local leads, word-of-mouth tips and spontaneous detours to uncover the stories, people and meals that don’t make it into guidebooks.”
Chang will be working on the project with acclaimed documentary filmmaer Morgan Neville, who’ll serve
as co-producer. Neville’s vast roster of credits includes 20 Feet From Stardom, Won’t You Be My Neighbor? and Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain
“What I’ve always admired about CNN’s storytelling is its willingness to explore culture through real human experiences,” says Chang. “That’s the kind of work Morgan and I both care deeply about, stories that feel personal, complicated, and honest. I’m thrilled to partner with him on this new project!”
Chang’s new series continues the network’s tradition of travel/ food shows sparked by the late Anthony Bourdain and his acclaimed CNN series Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown.
“At a moment when so much discovery is filteed through algorithms and online recommendations, David celebrates the value of getting a little lost and rediscovering the joy of wandering,” says CNN’s Amy Entelis. “He has an unmatched ability to move between humour, insight and honesty, and this series captures the richness of American life through the lens of food, travel and human connection.”
Chef David Chang has just signed on with CNN for a new food-based travel series that will take him off the grid
FRENCH CONNECTION
Prior to the debut of CBC’s Saint-Pierre last year, most Canadians likely had no idea there was a tiny French island off the Newfoundland coast. They know it now, thanks to the series becoming a big hit for Canada’s public broadcaster, which recently announced a third season has been greenlit. Production is scheduled to begin in July.
Starring Joséphine Jobert (Death in Paradise) and Republic of Doyle alum Allan Hawco as, respectively, Paris cop Geneviève “Arch” Archambault and exiled St. John’s police detective Donald “Fitz” Fitzpatrick, the series is produced by Hawco Productions, with Fifth Season handling global distribution (the series is available in New Zealand, Australia, Israel, the Netherlands, Poland, the U.K., Eastern Europe and Belgium, and will launch in France later this year).
“We’re incredibly grateful for the continued support from CBC, our incredible partners at Fifth Season, and the worldwide fans who have embraced the show from the very beginning,” say
ELFMAN’S NEW ROLE
series creators Allan Hawco and Robina LordStaffor . “Returning to Newfoundland and SaintPierre et Miquelon for season three is especially exciting, as these locations are such an important part of the show’s identity. We’re looking forward to building on the momentum of the first two seasons and bringing audiences even more of the mystery, unexpected twists, and character dynamics that make this world so special.”
Adds Fifth Season’s Ava Knight: “Audiences around the world have embraced Saint-Pierre for its breathtaking setting, gripping mysteries and the irresistible dynamic between Arch and Fitz. Following the global success of the first two seasons, season three raises the stakes in every sense with bold new investigations, evolving relationships and unexpected twists that expand the world of the series in compelling new ways. We’re thrilled to partner on a new season of SaintPierre that delivers even more intrigue, escapism and propulsive storytelling.”
Recently seen in sitcom Shifting Gears, crime drama Dark Winds and, before that, slaughtering zombies on Fear the Walking Dead, Jenna Elfman has just lined up her next role.
She’s signed on as a series regular for The Interrogator, an upcoming Fox procedural drama that was picked up with a straight-to-series order. British comedian Stephen Fry will star as Conrad Henry, a former MI6 agent who works for the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), which focuses on foreign military intelligence. “When conventional methods have failed, Henry’s quirky charm, superior intellect and mind-bending behavioural manoeuvres make him the only man able to lockpick the minds of the
world’s most dangerous criminals,” reads the logline.
Elfman will play Woodrow, once a rising star in the CIA until a mission gone awry sent her tumbling down the ladder. “Now she finds herself at the DIA as a handler for Henry and his team. She sees it as a demotion — the first step on her climb back up to where she fell from,” the logline continues. “She supervises Henry’s cases, pushes him and often quarrels with him — Conrad is always seven steps ahead and Woodrow is rarely more than five steps ahead. But the pair have a grudging mutual respect that makes for a fun, strange-bedfellows partnership.”
In addition to starring, Fry is also the series’ creator, and wrote the pilot script.

Place a number in the empty boxes in such a way that each row across, each column down and each small 9-box square contains all of the numbers from one to nine.
The idea of Go Figure is to arrive at the fi gures given at the bottom and right-hand columns of the diagram by following the arithmetic signs in the order the are given (that is, from left to right and top to bottom). Use only the numbers below the diagram to complete its blank squares and use each of the nine numbers only once.

John Travolta makes his directorial debut with Propeller One-Way Night Coach
THE CANNES FILM FESTIVAL has a special place in John Travolta’s heart. After all, it is where he and wife Kelly Preston, who passed away in 2020, fist saw Pulp Fiction together. The film would go on to win the Palme d’Or in 1994, and earn Travolta an Academy Award nomination.
“My memory of that was the biggest screen I’d ever seen,” Travolta recalls. “I’d never seen the movie, and my wife is next to me. She grabbed my hand and she said, ‘Oh honey. This movie! Did you have any idea?’ That’s my memory of Cannes.”
It would stand to reason that premiering his directorial debut in Cannes would be equally emotional for the 72-year-old cinema legend. “What a fantastic visit,” Travolta muses, two days after Propeller One-Way Night Coach screened at the prestigious film festival. “[Head of the festival, Thierry Frémaux] loves this movie and he really wanted the world to see it,” says Travolta. “He set this up so the world would pay attention and see it through my eyes, through his eyes, through Apple’s eyes. And it’s been a gorgeous celebration for the last few days.”
What has made the experience even more special — aside from receiving a surprise honorary Palme d’Or at the premiere — was sharing the experience with his 26-year-old daughter Ella Bleu. She stars in his film as Doris the flht attendant, but to her father, the collaboration goes much deeper. “We are partners, Ella and I, and we see everything very similarly,” says Travolta. “We’re very sympatico in how we view things. The quality of what we’re looking at, we agree on. So, when we entered into this, we were partners.”
The younger Travolta describes their unique working relationship. “It wasn’t very hard to create a good rapport together, because he’s my best friend. But I think it was more of a collaborative experience because we were always together. We would constantly be running ideas by each other,” she says. “We even flw out to the TWA terminal before filming and ran through every scene that we were

going to shoot. I stood in for all the characters. And I also grew up with all these stories my whole life, so it was so incredible to be a part of them coming to life.”
Propeller One-Way Night Coach is a film based on Tavolta’s own children’s book from 1997, where the actor recalls a cross-country fliht he took with his mother, from New York to Hollywood, that ultimately transforms this young boy’s life. Much like the book it's based upon, the film maintains a tone of childlike hopefulness and curiosity. “We’ve forgotten what that’s like,” says Travolta. “I was the ultimate ‘looking at the glass half full and not half empty’ [kid]. I always thought life couldn’t get better. When good things happen, I just looked for the next good thing that could happen. And even if I heard interesting bad news . . . you’re looking at darkness and you feel bad for it, but you’re resilient. You

recover quickly. [The film] ould be an example of what we could regain, if you regain that childlike [wonder].”
His positive outlook is something Travolta has maintained to this day.
“It’s certainly been tested, but I can’t help it. That’s my nature,” he says.
“The worst thing can happen, and I will try my best to crawl out of it and look at what could be better, what could solve it. I will look at darkness, but I don’t choose to die with it. I can’t.”
To create the stylized environment of the film, Tavolta and his producing team wanted to showcase the best in their respective industry, from architect Eero Saarinen’s TWA terminal in New York to the musical hits of the era. “I said, ‘I’ve got to have that terminal in New York. It’s Saarinen’s masterpiece,’” says

Travolta. “Everything in this movie reflects a maste. Every piece of music was a masterpiece of the era, that architecture — masterpiece.
‘I don’t think we’re going to be able to get it,’ said my producer. I gave the assignment to him, he calls me, he says, ‘Guess what? We’ve got the run of the terminal. Any part of it.’ We turned one building into seven sets.”
Travolta took great care in introducing his daughter’s character to the viewers. “I designed this movie as though one would design the introduction of Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor or Grace Kelly,” says Travolta. “I said, ‘I’ve got to do something special.’ I said, ‘Slow motion, “Girl from Ipanema.” ’ I was watching, crying like, ‘Oh my God, this is perfect.’” The scene was aided by the fact that Travolta recognizes his daughter’s special skill since childhood. “When she was eight years

old and we did a movie with Robin Williams called Old Dogs. Even as a little girl she let the camera do all the work. She never acted,” says Travolta. “Even Thierry said, ‘Your daughter is very special.’ He said, ‘I’d never seen an actress listen so well onscreen.’ It’s like she’s really having this conversation with this little boy, not acting. So clearly my plan worked.”
Should Travolta ever decide to leave his career in the film industr behind, the avid pilot can always keep busy behind the controls of a plane — including the propeller-driven Constellation airliner used in the film. “It gies me objectivity,” he says about flyin. “I can be not in my head. I can be looking outward.” Ironically, it is the lack of self-refection that thrills him about directing, as well. “I don’t have to worry about playing a character and figuring out behviour and all that stuff,” he says. “I’m watching someone else do it and I can correct it. It’s outward attention, not inward attention.” While Travolta says he will only return to directing if the subject matter compels him to the same degree as Propeller One-Way Night Coach, he will soon return to the screen in Roland Joff ’s upcoming conspiracy thriller November 1963, and reunite with his daughter in Renny Harlin’s action flick Black Tides. How he keeps his energy up is evident by how old Travolta feels on the inside. “Five to seven . . . or eight, in my mind,” he says, with a laugh. “Max nine.”
I designed this movie as though one would design the introduction of Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor or Grace Kelly. I said, ‘I’ve got to do something special.’”

MAKING its PBS debut back in 2015, Grantchester has proven to be a shining beacon within the “cozy murder” genre, presenting viewers with an endless stream of puzzling mysteries solved by a police detective and an Anglican clergyman. Robson Green has played Detective Inspector Geordie Keating since the series’ inception, fist working with vicar Sidney Chambers (James Norton), and then vicar William Davenport (Tom Brittney), and now vicar Alphy Kotteram (Rishi Nair).
STARS RISHI NAIR AND ROBSON GREEN SAY GOODBYE TO GRANTCHESTER WITH THE 11TH AND FINAL SEASON
As Granchester begins its 11th and final season, viewers are promised a series of episodes that continues the crime solving while also providing a fitting farewell. “We return to Grantchester in the summer of 1963 — each character standing at a crossroads that will shape their future,” details the new season’s logline. “Alphy’s growing connection with the bishop’s daughter Meg (Christie Russell-Brown) coincides with more discoveries about his past and the life he might have lived. Will he findthe answers he’s been searching for? Geordie enjoys a period of relative calm with Cathy (Kacey
Ainsworth) and their family, but a tempting offer from his commanding officer threatens to upend everything. Will he risk losing the life he loves? Leonard (Al Weaver), too, faces quiet yet profound change as caring for a neighbour’s son awakens a paternal side he never knew existed, challenging him to reevaluate his purpose. With themes of family, forgiveness, faith, and introspection, Grantchester’s last chapter promises self-discovery, hope, and transformation.”
For Nair, who joined the series in its ninth season, the role of Alphy has been a gift — albeit with one caveat. “The fist challenge of being a vicar, for sure, is the dog collar,” he explains. “That is super uncomfortable, and especially because we film in the summer months it’s very warm, and my suit is made from wool. I don’t think you can actually see on the screen, but I have a shirt, and then I have this black vest on top, then I have the waistcoat, then I have the blazer. So it gets very hot underneath all that. It’s quite funny being in a vicar’s outfit or the whole day. When you’re filmin, there’s a lot of time where they’re setting up cameras and stuff. So I went for a walk and people [in town] were kind of looking at me, and being really smiley and nice. I was thinking, ‘Oh God, people here are really lovely.’ And then I realized, when people don’t know that I’m an actor, and think I’m a vicar walking the streets, they’re very smiley and kind. people to tell me what their sins were, but I restrained myself.”
That said, Nair also admits that the character that viewers see onscreen isn’t that different from the actor they might encounter in real life. “I guess I’m quite similar to Alphy, in terms of, Alphy’s described as glass half-full, quite positive, looks at things in positive ways,” he says. “And I think that’s how I like to live my life, to see the best in people, and try and be as positive and half glass-full as I can. Alphy has that, but he is also a vicar, and he has to be very understanding of people, and has to see both sides of every kind of argument, or any murder, or whatever it’s going to be.”
That extends to the trait that Nair views as Alphy’s superpower, the vicar’s ability to disarm people with his sunny personality. “I think what I really love and admire about him is the way he deals with situations that most people would react quite angrily to, or be very hurt by,” says Nair. “He kills people with kindness, whether that be people just being rude to him, or whether that being people judging him because of the colour of his skin. The way that Alphy deals with it is with a smile, and he . . . doesn’t really take it to heart, which I think to the perpetrators catches them off guad. I love Alphy . . . I like him and I like his flws as well. I think they make him who he is.”
For Green, saying goodbye to the character he’s played for more than a decade — and the group of actors who’ve become like family to him — is a bittersweet experience. “From the very beginning, I have had the incredible
fortune to be part of this extraordinary team of talented, passionate and dedicated individuals who have become more than colleagues,” he says. “They have become family. I have made friendships forged through shared laughter, challenges, and triumphs. The bonds we’ve formed extend far beyond the camera lens, and I know that they will endure long after the final sene within the Grantchester world has been filmed” Green continues: “Thank you to everyone who has been part of this incredible journey. [Series creators] Emma Kingsman Lloyd and Daisy Coulam . . . from that very fist day you gave me the extraordinary opportunity to be part of this experience. It has been an honour to share in the magic of Grantchester, and I am forever grateful for the memories, the friendships, and the love that this journey has given me. I hope I made you proud.”

HOSPITAL OF HORROR
A supernatural entity and all-too-real social ills stalk the halls of a decrepit psychiatric facility in the new season of The Terror
IT HAS BEEN SEVEN YEARS since The Terror last held viewers captive, but with Devil in Silver something unexplained and evil returns to the screen. Based on Victor LaValle’s 2012 novel, the next instalment of the horror anthology takes us to New Hyde Hospital, a psychiatric facility where the inner demons of its patients have started to become a lesser concern than whatever else might haunt these hallways.
The series stars Dan Stevens as Peter “Pepper” Coffin, aorking-class New Yorker whose impulsive actions defending his girlfriend from an abusive ex land him on a 72-hour psychiatric hold at New Hyde. What starts as a paperwork dodge by the police officers who arrest Pepper soon evolves into an exploration of his interior life and surroundings. “One of the fun threads of the show, one of the quests that our protagonist has to go on, is his own inner demons,” Stevens tells TV Week. “He shows up not entirely as an innocent and he hasn’t faced up to a lot of stuff. He feels that the world is against him and that he must fiht to get what he wants, physically. He has to learn to own his s*** and step up to the plate and care for people that he might not have otherwise cared about.”
Meanwhile, a monster haunts the halls of New Hyde, which is what allowed the creators to do a thorough examination of the American healthcare system through the lens of horror. “As a lifelong horror fan, I think one of the truisms is the idea that, if you want to talk about something serious, sometimes the best way to do it is with a monster,” says LaValle. “That monster can drop people’s defences, but it never has to

stop and say, ‘Alright, let’s eat broccoli.’ Instead, it hides the broccoli. And in the case of our show, we were trying to talk about some really serious subjects, but if you say, ‘Well, there’s this hospital, there’s something in it, people are dying,’ then you get to lean into the fun and the scares of that, and then sneak in all that good, thoughtful broccoli.”
Series director and executive producer Karyn Kusama agrees that the thrill of the genre is what often allows for deep conversation about societal ills. “It somehow is dismissed or considered disreputable . . . but, to me, horror is what remains culturally relevant — and I can’t necessarily say that of a lot of other genres.”
“What we’re depicting is institutional and bureaucratic violence,” she continues. “We are living it day-to-day right now [in real life]. There are examples of playbooks of cruelty, and malicious intent, that has a corollary to the kind of institution that New Hyde is — where, as much as everyone can convince themselves that they are genuinely trying to help people in desperate circumstances, they are, in fact, creating more problems.”
Although it may have seemed like The Terror had met its end as a franchise, Kusama believes Devil in Silver works well under this particular brand umbrella. “Part of The Terror has come to be about psychological imprisonment, being confined t unforgiving spaces,” she says. “In some respects, yes, this could have been a standalone limited series, but what I think is so great about it as part of the Terror title is that it actually is a modern updating of this form [deployed in the other two seasons in a historical context], which I think really depends on claustrophobic spaces being challenged by some question around a

supernatural power or entity. In today’s times, what better place to start than an American psychiatric hospital?”
For LaValle, who is no stranger at looking into the failures of American institutions and systems, Devil in Silver is not just an investigation of systemic failure, but also a piece about individual responsibility. Although Pepper is placed inside this facility for the wrong reasons, he is very much a man in need of introspection. “Right at the outset of the fist episode, as he sees it, he’s standing up for his girlfriend and her daughter. But that kind of bluster . . . he’s desperate for that to be how you see him,” the creator muses. “On some level, consciously or subconsciously, he knows that underneath that, in his past, he failed that test when it mattered most. So, what does it matter if you pass later tests?”
To Kusama, the character material was heightened by Stevens, a veteran of the horror world, taking on this role. “He doesn’t judge the horror genre,” she says. “I think he really believes in its power to tell a more prescient or more powerful story because of its genre.” Stevens is also just an eccentric character in real life, despite the initial, classy impression fans may have gleaned from his career-launching stint on Downton Abbey. “He is such a delightful weirdo,” laughs Kusama. “Yes, he’s a proper gentleman in that he showed up to work prepared, kind, patient, thoughtful — but then, in every other respect, he is just a wild and woolly artist, you know? It was a joy to work with him.”
Stevens himself, still best known for Downton despite turns in darker, quirkier projects like The Guest, Legion and Cuckoo, admits he is a true fan of the supernatural. “I really enjoy the genre because it invites so much playfulness and a certain kind of

filmmaer that I really enjoy working with, who is determined to create something that is immediately engaging, visually stunning and often inviting something that we’ve never seen before.”
That being said, the actor admits that between Legion, Cuckoo and now The Terror, he’s spent a lot of time locked up in fictional pschiatric hospitals. “Institutions are horrific y their very nature, and I think they are great playgrounds for storytelling. So, it’s almost certainly not the last time that I will do a story in an institution,” he says. “I don’t want every project I do to look like the other one, but inevitably over time there’s going to be parallels emerging and institutions — like New Hyde in this show — are great settings for horrific tales”
What begins as a 72-hour hold turns into an unending Kafka esque bureaucratic nightmare for our hapless hero.

STARRING Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, Colin Firth, Eve Hewson, Colman Domingo, Wyatt Russell, Henry Lloyd-Hughes
Director Steven Spielberg returns to familiar territory in this sci-fi thriller that can be seen as a sequel of sorts to Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Beyond the intriguing tagline — “If you found out we weren’t alone, if someone showed you, proved it to you, would that frighten you?” — the plot is being kept under wraps. What we do know is that Emily Blunt plays Kansas City meteorologist Margaret Fairchild, who inexplicably begins speaking in a strange, alien-sounding dialect in the middle of a live TV broadcast. Josh O’Connor plays Daniel Kellner, a cybersecurity expert and whistleblower who’s assisted by his girlfriend Jane Blankenship (Eve Hewson) in releasing proof he’s stumbled upon that presumably shows incontrovertible evidence of an alien race. Standing in his way is Noah Scanlon (Colin Firth), the powerful head of the Wardex corporation, who will stop at nothing to prevent that from happening due to his belief that “the truth will upend all established order across the entire world.”

Q
A LAST WORD THE
Q Of all the things you’ve done across your career, have you ever directed such an eclectic cast?
A Look, I’ve done a lot of stuff — fom the dancing and choreographing and my TV work and the movies . . . I’ve run the gamut. And this was just a great deal of fun. It felt low-stakes and low-pressure, because we had no time, we had so little money and we were just sprinting the whole time. We shot this thing in 19 days. All those cameo people? Most of them worked for, at most, half a day. The hardest part of making it was kind of scheduling — how to get people in and out. And that train was just one wooden car that we kept redressing at night, after work. It was nuts.
Q One of those cameos is an actress you’ve got a long history with, Sarah Michelle Gellar . . .
A Well, as you said, she is an old friend. And when I asked her, she was just so quick to say yes. I said, “Well, you’re gonna be playing yourself — but nobody knows who you are and everybody’s gonna be giving you s*** about
Adam Shankman
just seeming like some irritating lady on the train.” And she thought that was funny. So, it was great.
Q
“Campy” can be a tricky tonal bullseye to hit. How did you go about that?
A I told every actor on the movie, “You just have to play it like you’re in a drama.” We can pick it up a little bit to, like, soap opera level — but all of this has to feel very real for you. The peril has to feel real, the world has to feel real. There’s no “drag” in the universe that we’re shooting in, so don’t think about the drag part. And if we just keep playing it as a drama, we’re gonna be in good shape.
Q Is it fair to say this film has some Airplane! vibes going on?
I like the kind of DIY vibe of it . . . There’s something that is really, really fun and very freeing. You don’t really have time to be scared. You don’t have time to overthink anything.”
A We definitely ae the grandchild of Airplane! — one of the most formative, greatest comedies of all time, I think . . . That kind of satire was so much fun to be able to do.
Q Airplane! was very much skewering classic disaster movies. Did you find yourself rewatching any of those old disaster flics that played it straight, just to give yourself a reference point for all the satire?
A I loved all of the Airports [the film series Airplane! was parodying] . . . and all the [movies produced by] Irwin Allen — the Towering Infernos and Earthquakes and The Poseidon Adventure. Those are my favourite . . . I watch a lot of those movies all the time anyway, so I didn’t have to [revisit them].
Q Underneath all the absurd, over-thetop, tongue-in-cheek antics — what’s the aspect of the human experience being explored in Stop! That! Train!?
A Oh, it’s a friendship love story. The Tess and DeeDee story [the two train attendants, played by Ginger Minj and Jujubee] is the heart of it — and then everything else just sort of circles around that.
Q As a setting, as a physical space to work in, what does a train offer you that other settings wouldn’t? I imagine there are limitations, but also unique opportunities.
A Well, for this it actually made it more funny. The original draft of the script that I read was set on an airplane, and I was like, “No. I can’t do that — because we’re making Airplane! then with a few different jokes and some drag queens.” I said, “But what if we put it on a train?” We can still keep a lot of those airplane jokes . . . you can keep all of the weathersystem peril that would really f*** up an airplane, and then you get the joke about the president having been in the “Rail Force.”
You know, [the setting] actually just pumps up the comedy. It doesn’t diminish it.
Q Speaking of the president, we have to talk about RuPaul Charles and what he brings to that role, and also to this film as a producer . . .
A Well, apparently it was RuPaul’s idea to ask me to do it — although Ru and I haven’t ever talked about that part of it. We’ve been friends for a very long time, and it was after I had guest-judged on Drag Race that he asked me to do it. Randy Barbato, one of the other heads of [Drag Race production company] World of Wonder, approached me and said, “Ru would really love you to read this script.” I sort of said, “OK, I guess I’ll read it. Sure.” And it was just so bloody funny and the jokes were so good that I thought, “Oh God, I don’t want somebody else to do this!” So, I took it on.
And my relationship with Ru is just so trusting and pretty divine. It’s really lovely.
CURRENT GIG
Taking a page from Airplane!’s flight manual, Stop! That! Train! campily sends up the disaster films of yor, centring on two attendants (played by drag queens Ginger Minj and Jujubee) working aboard a luxury locomotive that suddenly goes off the rails. ounding out the cast are Sarah Michelle Gellar, Joel McHale, Jerry O’Connell and RuPaul Charles the latter of whom both plays the U.S. president and exec-produces the film. Engineering all this barely controlled chaos? Hairspray director Adam Shankman.
Q We’ve touched on all the big stars who cameo in the movie. Can you talk about your two main characters, Tess and DeeDee — and the magic of Ginger and Juju sharing scenes together?
A Ginger was actually in one of my best friends’ movies, called Dumplin’ . And I was one of the producers of Hocus Pocus 2 , and Ginger had done that . . . What I didn’t realize in casting Jujubee against Ginger was that they have this really long-standing friendship. In fact, it was Jujubee’s idea to get Ginger on Drag Race initially. And they were also touring in a live production at the time . . . I didn’t know any of this. So, the kismet of then casting these people who were such close friends to be playing these friends was real lucky.
Q Going back to the Airplane! parallel, did you have any ambitions of finding your version of a Leslie Nielsen or Lloyd Bridges — a dramatic actor who turns out to be a secret comedy powerhouse?
A OK, you have to understand . . . we shot this thing in 19 days. I only had two weeks of prep, basically, on the
MEMORABLE ROLES
Starting out as a dancer for pop stars like Paula Abdul and Janet Jackson, Adam Shankman eventually made the jump to an in-demand choreographer of music videos, movies and TV. One of his more notable credits on the latter front was “Once More, With Feeling,” the iconic musical episode of Buffy the ampire Slayer, wherein he worked with his pal and future Stop! That! Train! star Sarah Michelle Gellar. (Fun fact: Shankman and Gellar are such good friends, he even officiated her wedding Freddie Prinze, Jr.) Starting in the early 2000s, he broke into film directing, helming such hits as The Wedding Planner, A Walk to Remember, Disenchanted and the aforementioned Hairspray. On the other side of the camera, you may well remember his stint as a judge on Fox’s So You Think You Can Dance.
ground. We were doing some casting, making lists before then, but it was not a lot of “thinking.” We had to move very, very, very quickly . . . And I’m just thrilled with who ended up in the movie and who said yes.
Q Are you saying that this production was like a runaway train?
A I am saying that. It was definitely not slow-moving!
Q As much as you or any other filmmaer would prefer all the time in the world to shoot, is there some advantage when you’re forced to work that quickly?
A Yeah, I like the kind of DIY vibe of it. “OK, we’re gonna make this play and we’re gonna put it on in the barn” . . . There’s something that is really, really fun and very freeing. You don’t really have time to be scared. You don’t have time to overthink anything.
Q Do you feel that your background as a choreographer informs how you conceive of and direct a film — even if tha film does’t involve dance?
A Yes, it does. When I read a script and I envision a space, figuring out hw to puzzle-piece it together is informed by my dance and choreography. And it makes it much easier, frankly. I don’t walk in and go, “Oh, I don’t know what I would do in here.” I walk in and it all feels very definitie — understanding what the needs of the scene are and understanding where I’m going to move with it and how the flw is going to work.
Q Finally, what mode of transportation will the sequel take place on?
A [Laughs] If this thing does well, who knows . . . Stop! That! Submarine!? Stop! That! Spaceship!?
The powerhouse of energy and life-long vibrancy
What are mitochondria, and how do we spark them?
They are like very tiny powerplants that produce energy in every living cell of our bodies. On average, every cell has 1,500 mitochondria. Can you imagine that for their extremely small size, it’s been said that they produce, gram for gram, 10,000–50,000 times more energy than the sun?
To say that mitochondria are important to human health is grossly understating their role in our
survival. We literally would not be alive without them. They convert our food into energy, so that every other function of our body can occur as it needs to. As we age, our ability to create healthy mitochondria to support our energy demands diminishes. And because about 90% of our cellular energy is produced by mitochondria, this decline can cause significant health issues
