WHAT’S ON THIS WEEK!
Few movies are as universally beloved as Legally Blonde, and the new prequel series Elle introduces viewers to a teenaged Elle Woods as she enters unfamiliar terrain after moving from sunny L.A. to rainy Seattle in the grungeheavy, flannel-filled 1990s.tar Lexi Minetree speaks with TV Week about this highly anticipated new comedy, and what it’s been like to step into the shoes of original star (and this show’s producer) Reese Witherspoon.
Prisoner
In this U.K. action-thriller, a prison guard is handcuffed to a lethal hitman as she transports him to a safe house so he can testify against a mob boss — who’s enlisted a small army to ensure they don’t make it to court alive.
Sharkfest
It’s that time of year again, when National Geographic unveils its summertime slate of shark-related programming. This year’s event kicks off with a special called Hammerhead Sharks Up Close With Bertie Gregory
EDITOR’S NOTE
OUTLANDISH, ACTIONPACKED THRILL RIDE
Every once in awhile you come across a TV show that’s so audacious in its implausibility while simultaneously so fastpaced and well-crafted that you can only sneer at its silliness while being in awe of its execution. That’s the case with Prisoner, a new British action-thriller in which prison guard Amber (Izuka Hoyle) is on the run while handcuffed to hitman Tibor Stone (Tahar Rahim) while many, many people try to kill them. Cue the overturning cars, ricocheting gunfie and multiple explosions. Masterpiece Theatre it’s not, yet what Prisoner may lack in intellect and believability it more than makes up for with a kinetic pace and a non-stop series of brilliantly executed action sequences.
Amber is just coming off a si-month maternity leave. Tibor has cut a deal to testify against his former employer, Harrison Dempsey (Brian F. O’Byrne), head of a crime syndicate called Pegasus. In the midst of transporting Tibor to a safe house, they’re ambushed in a tunnel by Dempsey’s goons, determined that he doesn’t make it to London’s Old Bailey courthouse alive. Shackled together, guard and prisoner must rely on their combined wits (and, not for nothing, Tibor’s considerable skills as a lethal assassin with 47 confirmed kills) as thy’re forced to become reluctant allies if they want to stay alive. Meanwhile, there’s the added wrinkle that Tibor is a type 1 diabetic who requires regular insulin shots.

THURSDAY, 6 P.M. & 10 P.M., SHOWCASE
“The engine of the show [is] a relatable, decent person handcuffed to someone that was an absolute enigma and was capable of anything,” creator Matt Charman (an Oscar-nominated screenwriter for Bridge of Spies) explained after a screening of the series premiere in London. While Amber is the show’s grounding centre, Tibor is the loose cannon who keeps viewers on their toes, constantly guessing what he’ll do next. “We had to find a ay to create a sort of mystery around my character, to create a sort of fascination and some sort of fear at the same time,” says Rahim, “and we finally ound him pretty easily — he’s a sociopath.”

PRISON RULES
I heard they’re doing yet another Prison Break remake. Are Linc and Michael really at it again!?
—F.N., Coquitlam
U.S. streamer Hulu did, indeed, just greenlight a revamp of the hit Fox thriller that ran from 2005 to 2009, centring on fugitive brothers Michael Scofield Wentworth Miller) and Lincoln Burrows (Dominic Purcell). However, unlike the 2017 Fox revival, this one will tell a whole new story, about an ex-soldier (American Gods’ Emily Browning) who takes a job as a guard at a particularly nasty penitentiary to protect someone she loves. Also in the cast is You alum Lukas Gage, who told The Hollywood Reporter: “We’re paying respect to the amazing TV show that I grew up loving . . . but it’s also on Hulu now, it’s not on Fox, so we can get really gritty and get really dark. It’s gonna be crazy, it’s gonna be a wild ride.” That said, Gage did also tease a cameo or two from some “OG” Prison Break-ers.
Bye, Bye, Boroughs?
Really enjoyed that new show The Boroughs. Can you tell me if it’ll be back for a season two?
—D.M., Port Moody
Despite stellar reviews and a sterling cast headlined by Alfred Molina and Geena Davis, unfortunately Netflixs Cocoon-esque dramedy about the spooky conspiracy at a New Mexico retirement community has, itself, been retired.
The move came as a surprise to anyone who’s been paying attention to the streaming service’s Top 10 scroller, where The Boroughs has consistently staked a claim since its May 21 debut. However, The Hollywood Reporter cites sources who note that, while the show was well-watched, it was not a breakout hit. Couple that with a reported price of at least US$10 million per episode, and a renewal simply was not in the cards.
Another possible factor noted by THR’s sources: the fact that the show was produced by the Duffer Brothers, who — though they’ve been Netflixs golden boys for over a decade courtesy of creating Stranger Things — recently signed a fouryear deal with rival Paramount. Of course, that would not prevent the continuation of The Boroughs or any of the Duffer’ other existing Netflix series, but some pundits have speculated that the streamer had less incentive to keep their shows afloat after the departur.
Lukas Gage (seen here in Netflixs You) tells Prison Break fans to expect a darker, grittier sort of reboot.

Loved The Real McCoys. My favourite character was Walter Brennan, who played Grandpa Amos. Would like to hear that high, reedy, rough-sounding voice again, but the show never seems to repeat!
–J.S., Coquitlam
Lighthearted comedy The Real McCoys originally aired from 1957 to 1963 and told the story of Amos McCoy, who moved his family from the hill country of West Virginia to a farm he inherited in California. His interactions with loved ones and neighbours alike were often define by clashes between his Appalachian values and those of the “modern” folk around him.
Many thought that this show was the inspiration for The Beverly Hillbillies (1962-1971), but that series’ creator, Paul Henning, always maintained that he brought the idea for Hillbillies to CBS in 1957, before Real McCoys aired its first episod.
As for Walter Brennan, he was a
recruited to become spies. Their greatest asset? The fact that the ever-vigilant enemies in the U.S.S.R. have designated them PONIES — Persons of No Interest.
The show earned raves upon its debut this past winter — on streamer Peacock in the States and on cable network Showcase in Canada. Alas, viewership numbers for the former were not commensurate with the show’s high budget, and it’s been cancelled after a single season.
That news is all the more disappointing given that the
most versatile performer. Although most baby boomers only know him as Amos McCoy, Brennan was a threetime Oscar winner before he ever appeared on a television series — and it was his look, not his distinctive voice which first attracted producers and directors, who were casting him in silent movies as far back as 1925’s The Calgary Stampede. He was even diverse enough to have a gold record in 1962 — a million seller called “Old Rivers,” which he also co-wrote.
Speaking of that unforgettable voice, it was actually the result of a gas attack in the First World War. And you can hear it again anytime you like on complete DVD sets of the show, readily available at major retailers.
finale capped off with Be learning that her husband, whose mysterious death drove her into the spy game to begin with, was actually not so dead after all!
In a chat with TV Insider before news of cancellation had come down, co-creator David Iserson mused on what implications that bombshell would have had if the story kept going.
“I think where we are setting her up for season two . . . knowing that Chris is alive, and knowing that that information is going to come back towards her,
one way or the other, and how she is going to grapple with it . . . She is a much different person than sh was when the show began — where the hope that Chris is alive and the information that Chris is alive would be something that would be the wish that she tells herself comes true,” Iserson explained. “And I think the person that she is at the end, when that information comes, she has kind of lived a lot more life — and that is information that she is going to receive in a much more complicated way.”

Livin’ on a Prairie
Laura Ingalls Wilder’s collection of wholesome novels inspired by her childhood on the frontier were fist printed in the 1930s, and have been passed down from parent to child ever since.
Popular as the books were, it was NBC’s 1974-1983 adaptation, starring a young Melissa Gilbert as Laura and Michael Landon as her stalwart dad Charles, that solidified Little House on the Prairie as a pop-cultural staple.
Now, the story gets a fresh spin courtesy of Netflix. er the streamer’s synopsis: “Season one follows the Ingalls family as they establish their ‘new forever’ outside the small but quickly developing town of Independence. The family, along with their dog Jack, faces the often harsh conditions of 1800s prairie life. It brings fever, wolves and fie — obstacles that longtime fans will recognize from the original novels.”

As showrunner Rebecca Sonnenshine mused in a chat with Tudum: “I always like to say that this show is a love story about a family. They’re a family you want to be with, you want to know, you want to spend time with. That’s really at the core of what Little House on the Prairie is about: a family that is there for each other, tells stories to each other, tells stories about themselves . . .”

In a chat with Nerds That Geek, Clarke laid out the appeal of this particular sleuth: “She has this thing where she says to Harper about funk music, ‘It’s not about the notes. It’s about the space in between the notes.’ And for Ellis, it’s not about that physical evidence. It’s about the people and the spaces in between those people, and what connects to those people that tells her more about what’s happened in the case. The physical evidence can’t say anything about the human condition and she’s about the human condition.”

“Whether you’re a guy or you’re a girl, your first allegianc at that age is to your best friend, and [the film is] sort of li e an exploration of those proto-relationships that build into real relationships,” director Adam Rehmeier told Inherent Bummer. “I remember being at that age and having to pick between the girl or my best friends. They’re like, ‘Let’s go get sloppy and walk up and down Main Street’. But I had already spoken to the girl about going to the movies or something. So you have to make those choices and maybe you say you don’t feel like it . . . and then you get caught coming out of the theatre. I just thought that was enduring and tender. Per Netflix, Thunder 3 centres on “the unbreakable bond between three childhood friends as they embark on a desperate search for a missing girl. The series follows Pyontaro, an ordinary middle schooler, and his two best friends, Tsubame and Hiroshi — a trio known as the Small 3. Their lives are upended when Pyontaro’s cheerful younger sister, Futaba, suddenly vanishes. And the laws of physics are different there, so they discover that they have the superpowers required to help that world defend itself.”
Which is to say, even the sky isn’t the limit for the animators of this adaptation.
Joseph continued: “The contrast — stemming from the art style and also from what’s happening in these two worlds — is so stark that you really, immediately, get that feeling of different worlds. And the art does such a good job of setting the two universes apart, even though the same people live in them, the same places exist in them. It still feels like two different universes, which I think is a really interesting way to do it.”

Q How has the reality TV experience lived up to, or defied, your xpectations?
Next Gen NYC WEDNESDAY, HAYU
A I grew up watching Survivor That was the only reality TV thing I have ever watched. But I had a glimpse of the Kardashians or other reality shows here and there. In my mind, I was like, “Well, this is obviously not real.” And once you’re filming it, and you’re sitting there with these people that you’re becoming really good friends with and have these genuine conflicts sometimes — and eally good moments — you realize, “Oh wow, they’re just capturing our real life right now.”
Q That said, New York City is a bit of a Survivor-esque jungle . . .
A Oh, 100 per cent. People getting voted out every day . . .
Q How do you find the presence of the camera affects this grou’s behaviour?
A There’s literally nowhere to hide, right? The camera will capture the truth. We’re putting a lot of faith into each other that we’re going to be straight-up with each other, and I think the camera adds another level of pressure on that. The cast is 12 people. The camera’s like our 13th friend. It’s the mediator, the listener. And it definitely forces us to be super-honest and open. But also, we also forget it’s there sometimes . . . It definitely
doesn’t stop people from lying, I can tell you that. People still be lying all the time.]
Q You grew up across multiple different cities and continents. Do you have any sense how that’s shaped your outlook?
A It’s so funny. At this point in my life, it’s something that I’m really looking back on and trying to navigate. What are the lasting effects of that? I think I got very used to a wide variety of different cultures. I got a weird, jumbled mix. There’s nothing that really 100 per cent stuck, but rather just a mixture of all these different values and cultures and belief systems. I think that made me a little [averse] to sticking to one type of status quo. I tend to shake things up.
Q As someone who has lived all over the world, what stands out about New York?
A I think it’s the greatest city on Earth. Anything can happen in this city, right? You can end up being anyone you wanna be, and you can do whatever you wanna do. Walking around, you feel the energy and the opportunity. Every day, you could have literally the worst day of your life — and the next day is the best day of your life. You just keep up with that optimism and head held high and “Just keep going.” That’s kinda the motto of being here, and I think that’s a beautiful way to live.

[to try and] stop the murder of Miguel Ángel Blanco, a slow-motion tragedy that left a profound mark on the country.” Released on the 29th anniversary of his tragedy — the exact age he was when he was murdered — Miguel Ángel Blanco: The 48 Hours That Changed Spain looks back at that pivotal moment of solidarity and compassion, and its lasting impact on the country.

YOUR WEEKLY SCOOP ON NEW TV PROJECTS IN THE WORKS
THE LAST TIME THAT
Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson were together onscreen was in the fist season of True Detective in 2014. In HBO’s stylized drama, the two portrayed deeply flwed cops pursuing a serial killer; now they’re reuniting for a very different project.
This time, they’ll star in Apple’s eight-episode comedy Brothers, in which they play fictionalized ersions of themselves, with the actors’ friendship put to the test when they uncover a secret that’s been packed away for decades: they might actually be brothers.
True Detective
Duo Reunite
“After Woody’s daughter’s wedding falls apart, he loads up the family and heads to Austin for an extended stay at Matthew’s ranch,” reads the series’ logline. “But what begins as a healing getaway quickly spirals when Matthew’s mother, Ma Mac (played by Holland Taylor), accidentally lets slip a long-buried secret that the two friends might actually be brothers. As Woody turns the ranch upside down in pursuit of the truth, Matthew finds himself juggling an entirely different identity crisis: a potential run
for governor of Texas. The result is a heartfelt, chaotic and wildly funny story about friendship, family, fame and the messy line between myth and reality.”
The show was created by Lee Eisenberg, a former producer with The Offi . In addition to Harrelson, McConaughey and Taylor, the ensemble cast also includes Natalie Martinez, Brittany Ishibashi, Nolan Almeida, Ella Grace Helton, Noah Carganilla and Oona Yaffe
As far-fetched as the premise may seem, the show is actually based on some real-life aspects of the pair’s long friendship — including actual rumours that the two may be related.
In fact, in a 2023 interview with Esquire, Harrelson confirmed tht his father — a mob hitman who was convicted of the 1979 assassination of a judge — had a brief relationship with McConaughey’s mother. “We haven’t done a test, but there are too many times that I think to myself, My God, the similarities!” Harrelson said. “The things he does, the things he says — just the way he is. I’ve felt that for years.”
Brothers will make its debut Wednesday, September 23, on Apple TV.
Former True Detective partners Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey will share the spotlight again for a clever new comedy.
BREAKING THE CHAIN
For Jodie Comer, her breakthrough role came as Villanelle in Killing Eve — a sociopathic assassin sporting the ability to kill without remorse. That psychological profil, however, is the polar opposite of the character she’ll be playing in an upcoming limited series for HBO, who’s forced into an impossible moral dilemma.
In The Chain, Comer portrays a suburban mother who is targeted by a dangerous group of criminals, forced to commit a crime in order to save her kidnapped daughter — or risk losing her forever.
Per the logline, this thriller “follows Rachel Klein, who drops her daughter at the bus stop and heads into her day. But a cell phone call from an unknown number changes everything: it’s a woman on the line, informing her that she has Kylie bound and gagged in her back seat, and the only way Rachel will see her again is to follow her instructions exactly: pay a ransom, and find another child to abduct. This is no
SURVIVING & THRIVING
ordinary kidnapping: the caller is a mother herself, whose son has been taken, and if Rachel doesn’t do as she’s told, the boy will die. Rachel is now part of the Chain.”
It’s based on the 2019 novel by Adrian McKinty, with Lost’s Damon Lindelof serving as showrunner. “From the moment I heard the wild and original premise of Adrian’s book, I was shocked, surprised and angry I hadn’t thought of it myself,” said Lindelof when the series order was first announced. “I’ve always wanted to try to adapt a great thriller, and this one has all the dark, weird, exhilarating touches that fire up my imagination.”
Meanwhile, the story behind the book is also fascinating. McKinty quit writing in 2017 and became a bartender and Uber driver to support his family. Prolific crime author Don Winslow (Savages) found out and passed some of McKinty’s work to his agent, who then encouraged the Irish scribe to write The Chain.
The cast of HBO Max drama pilot How to Survive Without Me keeps growing. From Greg Berlanti (Fly Me to the Moon) and Bash Doran (Beef), this one-hour drama focuses on a family set adrift by the death of their matriarch, unsure of how to manage their complicated, evolving lives without her guidance. While working through their grief, the clan must find the time and make the effort to remain connected, and to be there for each other through all of the challenges yet to come.
Ray Romano ( Everybody Loves Raymond ), Joshua Jackson ( Doctor Odyssey ) and Kaley Cuoco ( The Flight Attendant ) are headlining the series, which recently added Rita
Wilson ( 1883 ) to its cast.
Wilson will play a key role in the story: she’s the matriarch, Beverly, described as “elegant and loving, with an authority earned through wisdom and experience” and “a prolific writer director who considers her family to be her greatest accomplishment.”
“I was partially inspired to create How to Survive Without Me after losing my mother to cancer — wanting to explore grief, love and what it means for a family to move forward after losing the matriarch at its centre,” Berlanti said in a statement.
Romano’s real-life son Joe is also set to make his TV acting debut on the show, appearing in flashback as a younger version of his dad’s character.

Place a number in the empty boxes in such a way that each row across, each column down and each small 9-box square contains all of the numbers from one to nine.
The idea of Go Figure is to arrive at the fi gures given at the bottom and right-hand columns of the diagram by following the arithmetic signs in the order the are given (that is, from left to right and top to bottom). Use only the numbers below the diagram to complete its blank squares and use each of the nine numbers only once.

Star Lexi Minetree on stepping into Reese Witherspoon’s most iconic role In LEGALLY BLONDE prequel ELLE
I
MAGINE BEING HIRED to play a young Reese Witherspoon as Elle Woods from Legally Blonde. “It’s one of those things that, if you would have told me even three years ago, I would have said, ‘You’re joking. There’s no way,’ ” says Lexi Minetree, the 25-year-old American actress cast to play the role in the prequel series Elle. “I feel so lucky because, as an actor, the goal is just to be able to do your work. So, to be given not only a wonderful, wonderful character, but such a wonderful group of women to work with, it’s literally a dream,” she tells TV Week.
BLONDE AM
Elle PRIME VIDEO
The women Minetree are referring to are, of course, Witherspoon herself, who serves as the series’ executive producer, and showrunners Laura Kittrell (Insecure) and Caroline Dries (The Vampire Diaries), who supported the relative newcomer through the strenuous Burnaby-based production. “It was definitely a big undertakin,” says Minetree. “When I fist looked at it, I was like, ‘Oh wow, how am I going to do this?’ Because I’m No. 1 on the call sheet of a show with 450 pages of script. It was fie months of filmin, and out of that I had two days off, and you’re working 12-15-hour days . . . But you know what? I think, the bigger the challenge, the more reward you feel when you come out the other end.”
TV Week caught up with Minetree, who opened up about the pressures of stepping into the heels of the ultimate L.A. blonde as she journeys to mid-’90s Seattle and the heart of the grunge movement.
What did the franchise mean to you coming in?
I have always been a big Legally Blonde fan. I don’t remember the fist time I watched it, but I thought, “This girl is so fun and cool.” The more that I watched the movie when I was preparing for the audition, the more
Because Elle is in this new world that she’s not used to, her tricks of the trade don’t work. That’s such a good lesson for us to take away — that failure means you’re going in the right direction, because it means you’re trying something new and you’re putting yourself out there. Watching Elle fail is one of the best things ever because she is hilarious doing it.”
I was like, “Whoa, this girl is so smart.” Even when she’s at UCLA, she has a wicked vocabulary, but she’s also so kind and put-together. And the whole movie, you get to see her navigate new waters and prove to everyone what she’s capable of. I think this show is more of that and getting to see Elle Woods in this whole new world.
BITION
Tell us about Elle as a 16-year-old. Who is she? What is she like? She’s the best. I love her. If you’ve seen the movie, she’s that same bubbly, optimistic girl. The only difference is that she’s in high school, which are dark days for so many of us — but she looks good doing it. She’s navigating who she is and you get to see her in these scenarios where she gets put to the test for what she stands for as a person. I think high school are the years that you get to discover who you are, who you want to be and find our tribe. And because Elle is in this new world that she’s not used to, her tricks of the trade don’t work. That’s such a good lesson for us to take away — that failure means you’re going in the right direction, because it means you’re
trying something new and you’re putting yourself out there. Watching Elle fail is one of the best things ever because she is hilarious doing it.
The films are so specific in to. What do you think Laura has done so well in terms of continuing that legacy?
I think Laura has put Elle in the funniest situation possible, which is pink Elle Woods with her pink umbrella in grungy dark Seattle. I got rained on so many times on set, you don’t even know. When you’re on take fie of getting drenched, you’re like, “Get me out.” But what I think makes this such a special show is that not only is it taking that heart and humour of the original, but I also think it becomes its own thing and plays to the actors’ strengths. Every time I act with a different person, I feel like it brings out a different version of Elle, which is so cool.
How do you go about embodying Elle Woods?
Well, lots and lots of caffeine. Every morning, I do a vocal and body warm-

up because sometimes I get picked up at 4 a.m. in the morning and I’m looking haggard and sounding horrible, but she’s so chipper and her voice is so high and melodic that I want, no matter if it’s 4 a.m. or midnight, to be able to bring that energy. I also never judge her. I love her so much as a character and I think that if you go in thinking she’s shallow, you’ve already lost. Even when she’s saying something slightly ridiculous, she’s so earnest and she cares so much. And that’s what I really wanted to bring to this character, as well as my own humour.
Did you aim to sound like Reese?
Yeah. When I watched the movie an ungodly amount of times, I probably drove my roommates crazy, just mimicking her and trying to get the voice down. Even in the mornings or whenever I want to get into the voice, I’ll say little phrases from the movie. I’ll be like, “What? Like it’s hard?” I go into those voices to get me into her world. And of course the words I’m saying for the show are different than the movie, but it’s the same life force. And what’s really cool though is all the different situations she’s in. Sometimes they’re really grounded
she took Harvard Law by storm, a teenaged Elle Woods (Lexi Minetree) found herself in another fish-out-of-water situation, moving from sunny L.A. to grungy Seattle.
and beautiful. I’ve learned lessons from this character about my own life in very deep, moving ways.
What has she taught you?
I feel like she’s really made me believe in myself even when you have a voice in your head that has doubts or with people in general who plant those seeds. I think every one of us has encountered moments of, “Oh my God, what am I doing? Am I being ridiculous? Are my dreams too big? Am I capable of this thing?” And I think the most important part isn’t not feeling those things, but it’s what you do after that really shows your character and your integrity.
The show is set in 1995 Seattle. What do you love about that era now that you’ve gotten to immerse yourself in it?
First of all, I love the music. I love ’90s music so much. I mean, Sheryl Crow , Alanis Morissette — you had some really cool women during that time period making some really cool music. And they’re so angry and I love it. But what I really love about it is that you really see that everyone is, whether they want to or not, forced to be present and engage with other people because there’s nothing that they can distract themselves with. A lot of times I’ve been in situations where I feel awkward or uncomfortable and you go on your phone. It’s like a crutch. When you go back to the ’90s, they didn’t have that in the same way.
Elle moves to this new place and it’s not as easy just to talk to your friends who are back home, so you have to engage in this new world. That’s really inspiring to me. So, I feel like I’ve been also trying to put myself out there more and engage in new worlds as well.
This show is also James Van Der Beek’s final performance before his passing. What was it like to interact with him?
He was so incredible to work with. I remember when we fist met, we were in the hair-and-makeup trailer and my fist impression was how gracious he was to everyone. And watching him act, he has such a natural charisma and he brings so much heart and humour to this character. I felt very honoured that we got to work with him and I was heartbroken to hear about his [passing]. But again, I think the wonderful thing about art is that in films and V your legacy gets to live on and I’m really excited for people to get to see him in this way.
Lastly, how are you meeting the outside expectations of what people want to see from Elle Woods? I really try to live by the philosophy of what’s in my control and what’s not. All I can do is be me and bring my version of Elle to the table and I hope people like it. I like it. I think it’s fun, but I think I’ve learned that you can’t force everyone to like you. I think Elle learned that, too. She wants so bad for everyone to love her and like her and you’re not going to be everyone’s cup of tea. But I hope I’m a flvour everyone likes. I do my best and I hope it resonates. That’s all I can ask for.

NAT GEO TAKES A BITE OUT OF SUMMER WITH SHARKFEST
When Discovery Channel aired its inaugural Shark Week back in 1988, the door was opened for an annual summertime TV event that has remained popular ever since. More than two decades after Discovery fist tested the waters, National Geographic decided to dive in with its own version, launching its fist Sharkfest in 2012 — which, not coincidentally, arrives three weeks before this year’s annual Shark Week. However, if there’s one thing that’s been demonstrated it’s that fans of shark-related TV programming tend to love ’em both, and Nat Geo’s press release for this year’s Sharkfest
Summertime
declares that its “fincredible 14th year” will combine “jaw-dropping encounters with groundbreaking science and expert-led storytelling that reveal new insights into the behaviour, power and conservation of one of the ocean’s most fascinating predators.”
It all kicks off on Sundy via a special called Hammerhead Sharks Up Close With Bertie Gregory, airing on Nat Geo while also streaming on Disney+. The program follows Emmy- and BAFTA-winning cinematographer and National
Hammerhead Sharks Up Close With Bertie Gregory
SUNDAY, 6 P.M. & 9 P.M., NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC; MONDAY, DISNEY+
Geographic explorer Bertie Gregory as he dives into Mexico’s Pacifi waters to discover how protected seas can deliver a spectacle of one of the ocean’s most visually iconic sharks, the unmistakable hammerhead.
“In Mexico’s Pacific aters, Bertie Gregory goes in search of one of the ocean’s most iconic predators: the hammerhead shark,” declares the logline. “Once abundant in these seas, hammerhead populations have plummeted, making sightings increasingly rare. Joining forces with leading shark scientists and local experts, Bertie investigates what’s driving the hammerhead decline, and how protected waters offer hope for the future. His journey culminates in a rare and unforgettable encounter that shines a light on the future of one of the world’s most famous sharks.”
According to Gregory, his goal with this special — as with his previous Sharkfest offerings — is to encourage viewers to open their minds when thinking about sharks and their place within the underwater ecosystem. “I hope that it makes people rethink sharks and rethink how humans can live alongside sharks . . .” he explained in an interview with Voice Mag. Additional Sharkfest programming will be rolled out throughout the month,
Scalloped hammerheads are designated as a critically endangered species, having seen their global population dip by upwards of 80 per cent due to factors such as the illicit shark fin trad.

World’s Biggest Mako
A team of scientists and a cinematographer search the waters north of New Zealand to find giant mao. With the help of a local fisherma who has worked this particular stretch of ocean for decades, they encounter a series of increasingly large mako sharks. While endangered elsewhere on the planet, this team discovers a population of mako that might be making a comeback.
Attack of the Samurai Sharks
A 3,000-year-old cold case could be the earliest known victim of a shark attack.

Alyssa White, Gavin Naylor, Kirin Sekito and Masato Nakatsukasa investigate this ancient mystery.

Real-life couple Rafe Spall and Esther Smith discuss portraying their fictional counterparts in the fifth season o TRYING
MAKING A FAMILY
Whenever it’s time for Esther Smith and Rafe Spall to jump back into Trying, the two can’t wait to embody their longtime characters Nikki and Jason. “It’s like putting on your favourite coat,” says Spall. “I love doing this show. I can honestly say it’s my favourite thing to do. I get to hang out with my favourite person all day — Esther — and I get to do a thing that I really care about.” For Smith, Spall’s partner in real life as well as onscreen, the show never ceases to feel like home. “I love playing Nikki and I love the world,” she says. “I loved it particularly this season because the house just feels mature. It’s lovely to have these conversations with all the characters that have become family now.”
On the heartwarming comedy series, which in season one started as a couple’s journey to adopt after struggling to have a child of their own, Nikki and Jason have now spent seven years together with their adopted children Princess (Scarlett Rayner) and Tyler (Cooper Turner). They are feeling solid as a family unit, until the children’s biological mother, Kat (Charlotte Riley), turns up. It is Nikki, in particular, who senses trouble ahead. “What’s on her mind is, ‘How do we navigate this chapter?’ ” says Smith, whose character is forced to face her insecurities about being sidelined. “With Princess, there’s always that slight tension of, ‘Am I enough for you? Am I doing it right?’ It even makes me quite emotional talking about it. It’s like Nikki never feels like she’s quite got it with her, which is heartbreaking because she really tries.”
Trying
WEDNESDAY, APPLE TV
In good old Trying fashion, the way Nikki fist tackles her personal issues is humorously, by digging deep on the internet. “She’s desperate to find something [on Kt]. She feels like, ‘I know there’s something wrong. I’m having to pretend, but oh my gosh, I will find something on you,’ ” says Smith. Of course, it is a misunderstanding that forces her to course-correct. “She comes to understand, ‘This is so out of my control. I’ve just got to let this happen,’ ” says Smith. As chaos enters their household, Jason is the one called upon to be the port in the storm. “If Nikki’s the ocean, then Jason is a rock in the middle of it. That’s not to say that he sometimes doesn’t get overwhelmed by the ocean, because he does,” says Spall, whose character is also stretched from pursuing a career as a social worker. “It’s a really sweet full-circle for them, and for him,
Jason’s (Rafe Spall) training as a social worker brings him into the overstuffed abode of Harriet (Celia Imrie), an “upper-class hoarder.”
It’s like putting on your favourite coat. I love doing this show. I can honestly say it’s my favourite thing to do.”
because Jason’s a great guy, but he’s never really found his purpose outside of the family,” says Spall. “It’s more difficult than he igined, so you get all of the shenanigans that come with someone thinking that something’s going to be easy and it isn’t.”
As if their anxieties regarding kids and work weren’t enough, the bond between Nikki and Jason will be tested this season — much to Smith’s initial dismay. “When I read the scripts for this season, I was like, ‘Oh God, is there a threat here?’ ” she reveals. “They’re so strong, but I think it’s that inevitable thing within a couple that have been together for a long period of time that you don’t want it to just get stagnant. This season, Nikki just wants to be seen as Nikki and not just as a piece of furniture.” But the sometimes-uncomfortable growth of Nikki and Jason’s relationship is something to be expected, as the show continues to evolve and present new challenges. “You’ve now got these relatively young parents of teenage kids,” says Spall. “And even though it’s funny, there’s these moments of connection where I actually cry watching the show because I just think it’s so good.”
In its fifth season, the shw’s enduring quality is its ability to warm the hearts of viewers despite navigating often heavy subject matter. “I think it has to do with the individual characters themselves,” Smith muses. “Every single character, they’re not bad people and they’re funny. Marrying them all together is what I find omforting. I find it had to watch
The Crown alum Colin Morgan joins the cast as Kerry, a charming new co-worker of Nikki’s (Esther Smith).
the things that I’m in, but I don’t find it hard to watch this. It sounds cliché, but it’s just a warm hug to be in.” Spall believes that it’s the bond between Nikki and Jason that plays the biggest role in the show’s draw. “The writers have crafted a central couple who really are aspirational,” he says. “They’ve been together for a really long time. Their relationship is often compromised. Trusts are sometimes broken. They argue, but they figue it out. I think that’s something we can all aspire to. Long-term relationships are complicated and life is complicated and they’ve got a deep love and affection for each other, but, also, they like each other.”
If the couple at the centre feels like the real deal, the fact that the two also spend the majority of their time together, offscreen, is likely to play a part. “It’s weirdly all we’ve ever known,” says Smith. “It’s just hilarious coming back home to the person that you’ve been opposite all day, but that person was called Jason and this person’s called Rafe. Sometimes you stop yourself because you’re like, ‘I slightly feel like we’re in an episode of Trying right now.’ ” For Spall, there is no one else he would rather spend all day with. “I love watching her skill as an artist, close-up, because she’s really good and I love being around good acting,” he says. “It’s one of the great joys of my life, to be as close to her as someone who I think is one of the very best at what she does. And then I get to go home and drink a very dry martini with her after shooting. It’s pretty great.”
If Nikki’s the ocean, then Jason is a rock in the middle of it. That’s not to say that he sometimes doesn’t get overwhelmed by the ocean, because he does.”
From struggling with infertility to raising two teenaged adoptees, Jason and Nikki have weathered every storm with love, resilience and humour.

Q
A LAST WORD THE
Q This isn’t the first time viewers have taen a trip to your farm. Just last year you had a show on Prime Video called Tom Green Country . . .
A Yeah, we had a good warm-up, that’s for sure. I directed the show and I’m the director of photography on this show now, too. So, it’s a lot more than just the story side, it’s also technically shaping it and filming it and making it look beautiful. Shw off anada for what it is. That’s all been an exciting experience for me, because I’ve always loved cameras and the technical side of things. There’s new technology all the time and we’re trying to push the envelope.
Plus, this new show has, obviously, a talk show element to it. The fist show on Prime didn’t. It was more of just a lifestyle show. This is actually a talk show where I have celebrity guests and things like that. I’m really happy how it turned out.
You know, I made the decision to move the show to Crave, essentially. I’d had a great year or so working with Prime . . . but I had the opportunity to move, so I decided,
“Hey, let’s go do it with a Canadian company, eh? Elbows up!”
Q Honing in on that new chat show element, does the setting of this idyllic Ottawa Valley farm inherently bring a more laid-back vibe than a normal talk show studio?
Tom Green
A It’s all very intentional. I mean, I’ve done interview shows from my home before — and with podcasting in this day and age, people are used to going to people’s houses to do an interview. But this is a little different in the sense that we’re in this outdoor, beautiful, peaceful setting. And I’ve sort of created a style of shooting that allows us to do the interviews throughout the property, but still keep them a multi-camera, beautifully shot interview.
I don’t think you ever want to be too comfortable, because if you’re so comfortable that you are just sort of going through the motions, then there’s nothing at stake.”
People come out to the farm and everyone’s relaxed and happy to be outside in the nature and enjoying the countryside. And I think people do sort of exhale and have maybe more of a unique conversation than we would have had in a traditional TV setting.
Q On that note, what’s your mission statement for this particular series?
A We’re trying to create a show that is warm and inviting and funny — that feels like I’m not trying to shock the audience. It’s more about just having a great, hilarious, fun, interesting conversation and also taking people to a place that maybe they’ve never seen before — rural Ontario. And certainly, around the world, people haven’t seen rural Ontario photographed this way . . . the way we’re capturing the drone shots and the various cameras and lenses that I’m choosing to use, it really makes the scenery look as beautiful as it is in-person.
Q Looking at your career in general, when did you became comfortable in your own skin as a performer?
A Well, I don’t think you ever want to be too comfortable, because if you’re so comfortable that you are just sort of going through the motions, then there’s nothing at stake, right? I started doing standup comedy when I was 16 years old and obviously the fist time you get up on stage, you’re not comfortable. You’ve got a lot
of anxiety and nerves, and that’s what makes it exciting, right?
And here it’s 38 years since I started doing standup . . . I play music now at my shows, I’m bringing my guitar on stage, I’m playing piano on stage — which is relatively new for me to combine music and comedy together in the way that I’m doing it now. I’ve been touring this way all year in Canada, so I’m getting more and more comfortable with playing my music on stage — and turning into a musical comedy live performance. But I always keep changing what I do, because you don’t want to just do the same thing over and over again.
Now, everybody, as we get older, we do become a little more comfortable in our own skin, whether you’re performing or just as a human being. So, certainly, I feel very comfortable in this role, doing this new show. For sure.
QYou lived in Los Angeles for a long time. Now you’re back in Canada. Not to say that your Canadian identity ever went away, but was there a point when your Canadianness took on an added significanc?
ADefinitel. Because I’ve moved back full-time, and everything that’s going on in the world politically, it does give a renewed sense of Canadian pride. I feel much more proud to be . . . I shouldn’t say “more,” because I’ve always been very vocal about my Canadianness. When I’ve gone on talk shows or performed around the
CURRENT GIG
Back in 2021, comedy iconoclast Tom Green left L.A. for a new life in his old digs in the Ottawa Valley — buying himself a plot of land and starting himself a farm. That said, he hasn’t left showbiz behind. After a docuseries dubbed Tom Green Country hit Prime Video in 2025, now comes Crave’s The Tom Green Farm, wherein the funnyman’s horses, mules and chickens are joined by celeb guests like Tony Hawk, Michael Cera and Dan Aykroyd. All 10 episodes of season one are now available to binge.
The Tom Green Farm CRAVE (STREAM)
United States, I always say I’m from Canada. I’m not somebody who’s pretending to be from the United States. My parents are here, a lot of my friends are here, my brother’s here. I’ve always come back home to Canada multiple times a year just for personal reasons — and then with the standup comedy, I’ve performed in every city in Canada pretty much every year for the last 20 years. But to answer your question, I mean, I’ve moved to a farm. I no longer have a house in Los Angeles. I am absolutely building this show to show off hat makes me proud to be Canadian. I grew up in Ottawa, but we had a cottage outside the city, on a lake where I go canoeing and fishing and alking in the woods with my dad and my friends . . . the kind of nature that I love, and missed when I was in Los Angeles. So, it’s fun to be able to show some of the specifics of this to the orld.
Q Is there a most memorable guest that stands out from season one?
AThe fun thing is they’re all very different from one another, because it’s a pretty wide variety of people that come to the show. Some of them are people that I’ve known or am friends of, and some of them I’ve never met.
MEMORABLE ROLES
Making a truly indelible mark on the entertainment landscape, The Tom Green Show’s zeitgeist-grabbing shock-comedy antics began, most humbly, on Canadian cable-access in 1994 — before making their way to international infamy on MTV. That series ran till 2000, after which he appeared in such films a Freddy Got Fingered, Road Trip and Charlie’s Angels, the latter of which saw him share the screen with first wife Drew Barrymore. In 2025, Green enjoyed a resurgence via streamer Prime Video, which released a trio of projects, including This Is the Tom Green Documentary, standup special Tom Green: I Got a Mule! and aforementioned docuseries Tom Green Country, about his rustic rebirth back on home soil.
So, they all have a very unique sort of moment to them.
In the premiere, one of our big set pieces of the series was building the skateboard ramp for Tony Hawk. As a kid, I was such a skateboarder and he was one of my heroes. And even though we’ve become friends over the last 25 years and done shows together and stuff in the past, to have him fly up hee with Kevin [Staab, fellow skateboarding legend] and to come to this ramp that we built, it was all a thrill.
Then there’s Les Stroud, who I’m a huge fan of — who I’ve met before, but never went for a hike in the woods with. And Kurt Vile, got to play some music with him, and Jason Blaine and deadmau5 and Jessie Reyez — who I’ve never met before, but is a hip-hop artist from Canada; and I grew up making rap music in Toronto when I was a kid . . .
QBeing in the comedy business yourself, sitting down with Dan Aykroyd must have been a boon . . .
AThat was definitely xciting and fun. And from Ontario, right? So, he understands the lifestyle that I’m living here and it was kind of a unique way to be able to get to hang out with Dan . . . I’m glad he brought some of his Crystal Head vodka, because we got to have a few drinks. He made some drinks for my mom and my wife and I.
And I’d say that’s another big part of the show. There’s lots of real people, family moments . . . lots of things around the farm that kind of break up the long-form interviews. If you watch The Tom Green Farmcast [the show’s companion podcast] on the internet, that’s just the interviews basically pieced together. It sort of removes all the other farm shenanigans. There’s all sorts of fun stuff with the hoses and my mule, and going fishing and canoeing and dierent adventures we get into — plus, family things with my wife and my mother, who’s a producer on the show. It is a talk show, but because it takes place here on my farm with my family, there’s a lot of other elements to it.
The powerhouse of energy and life-long vibrancy
What are mitochondria, and how do we spark them?
They are like very tiny powerplants that produce energy in every living cell of our bodies. On average, every cell has 1,500 mitochondria. Can you imagine that for their extremely small size, it’s been said that they produce, gram for gram, 10,000–50,000 times more energy than the sun?
To say that mitochondria are important to human health is grossly understating their role in our
survival. We literally would not be alive without them. They convert our food into energy, so that every other function of our body can occur as it needs to. As we age, our ability to create healthy mitochondria to support our energy demands diminishes. And because about 90% of our cellular energy is produced by mitochondria, this decline can cause significant health issues
