EDITOR’S NOTE

HILARIOUS WHODUNIT RETURNS FOR SEASON 2

Making its debut on BET back in 2024, Diarra From Detroit proved to be a sly surprise. The hilarious comedy whodunit focused on Diarra Brickland (Diarra Kilpatrick, also the series’ creator), who’d recently split from her husband and tried to mend her broken heart by going on a Tinder date — only to be drawn into a cold-case mystery that transformed the schoolteacher into an amateur sleuth.

The long-awaited second season debuts this week, unveiling a more confident Diara and a whole new mystery. Per the synopsis, Diarra’s attempts at “having a hot-girl summer without getting wrapped up in yet another deeply unserious and extremely dangerous Detroit mystery” go awry when what begins as a seemingly harmless furniture recovery mission quickly spirals into a triple homicide investigation, a citywide treasure hunt and another trip deep into Detroit’s criminal underbelly.

“As Diarra attempts to sort out her messy relationship status, she instead finds heself going undercover with a secret society, starring in a Tubi movie, chasing urban legends, dodging gang warfare, and uncovering secrets buried beneath the city itself. Because of course she does.”

Diarra From Detroit

WEDNESDAY, PARAMOUNT+

During an appearance at the Television Critics Association press tour, Kilpatrick explained that she’s always had one primary goal in mind for Diarra From Detroit. “I really made this because I want people to feel entertained,” she said. “I think the world is so crazy right now, and as a mom, when I put my kid to sleep, I have about one hour with my husband to watch something before I have to do my meditation and do this and that. And that one hour is so precious to me, you know? When I was younger, I could watch 10 hours of bad television. Now, I just want to watch something that I want to talk to my friends about later, that I want to engage with and see if anybody on social is talking about it. So I really hope that this show can be that for people.”

Earlier this year, Disney+ announced plans for a new series called Locker Diaries, described as a “short-form anthology series” that was set to feature characters from some of the more popular Disney Channel franchises, including the horror-comedy Zombies, animated hit Phineas and Ferb and Descendants, which follows the teenage offspring of iconic Disney villains.

The Locker Diaries episodes for the latter franchise arrive this week. As with the earlier incarnations, each episode is viewed through the open locker of a high school hallway.

“Locker Diaries offers audiences a fresh perspective on their favourite shows and movies — inviting them to peek into the hallways and lives of fan-favourite characters, as they open their school lockers,” explains the Disney+ synopsis. “With each locker door opening, a new bite-sized adventure is revealed — ranging from dramatic to funny to spooky and surprising.”

A PLANET TO CALL HOME?

It’s been a minute since the finale of the second season back in 2024, and the new season of this sci-fi series about a manned space mission picks up immediately after the events of that episode. When we last saw the crew of Ark One, they picked up a distress call from distant planet Ross-128 while still celebrating the discovery of their new human-friendly planet — where they also discovered mysterious evidence of a previous civilization.

In the new season, per the official synopsis, the Ar One crew will be “faced with new challenges and visitors as the Ark’s crew splits up, with some continuing their journey through space and others continuing to build on Homebase 1.”

MARISKA LIGHTS UP THE EMMYS!

After Conan [O’Brien] and Nikki [Glaser] both hosted the Oscars and Globes back-to-back, will Nate Bargatze also be back to do the Emmys?

—A.F., North Vancouver

No, the Television Academy is breaking that particular trend, handing its mic instead to longtime Law & Order: SVU star Mariska Hargitay, who will make her hosting debut when the gala airs Monday, September 14, on NBC. A two-time Emmy winner herself, Hargitay enthused in a statement: “Bringing important stories into the light has been the heartbeat of my career. It’s my great honour to host the 78th Emmy Awards — in the 100th birthday year of my beloved NBC — and celebrate this extraordinary community of storytellers.” Hargitay is the first woman to emcee the gala sinc Jane Lynch in 2011.

Globe-Trotting Chills & Thrills!

I heard they may be doing a remake of The Da Vinci Code for TV? Is Tom Hanks involved?

—E.N., Coquitlam

Not a “remake” exactly, but Netflix has ordered a series based on the latest novel in author Dan Brown’s ongoing adventures of symbologist extraordinaire Robert Langdon — played thrice on the big screen by Hanks in 2006’s The Da Vinci Code, 2009’s Angels & Demons and 2016’s Inferno

The new show will be based on 2025 tome The Secret of Secrets. Per Brown’s officia website, the story kicks off whe Langdon “travels to Prague to attend a groundbreaking lecture by Katherine Solomon — a prominent noetic scientist with whom he has recently begun a relationship. Katherine is on the verge of publishing an explosive book that contains startling discoveries about the nature of human consciousness and threatens to disrupt centuries of established belief. But a brutal murder catapults the trip into chaos, and Katherine suddenly disappears along with her manuscript. Langdon finds himself targeted by a powerful organization and hunted by a chilling assailant sprung from Prague’s most ancient mythology . . .”

Hanks will not be involved in this one. Rather, a report from Variety tips that The Gilded Age’s Morgan Spector is in early talks to play Langdon, while Rebecca Hall (The Town) is being eyed for Solomon.

A
decades, iconic Law & Order: Special Victims Unit star Mariska Hargitay will host the Emmys this September.

Are they ever doing another season of Mare of Easttown?

—W.N., Burnaby

Lauded as an absorbing, character-driven mystery that delivers much more than pulpy thrills, HBO’s Emmysweeping 2021 drama was originally conceived as a limited series. Of course, after its massive success

After a visit to my mother’s home in Denmark, she acquainted me with reruns of a U.S. TV series that starred Tony Curtis and Roger Moore. Although it was dubbed into Danish, it still seemed very charming. Is it available on this side of the world?
–H.Q., West Vancouver

The breezy crime romp you are after was a British export from Sir Lew Grade’s ITC studios. It was popular — and differently titled — across the globe. In Denmark, it was known as The Unlucky Heroes. In Sweden, Working Snobs. It reached North America as The Persuaders!, airing on ABC from 1971 to 1972.

The show centred on the oddcouple pairing of two unlikely sleuths: Danny Wilde (Tony Curtis) and Lord Brett Rupert George Andrew Sinclair (Roger Moore). Wilde had made and lost vast fortunes in the oil business in the States, and then drifted aimlessly around Europe. Sinclair was a polished U.K. nobleman — well-educated and

in the ratings and during award season, whispers of a second instalment began to circulate. As of yet, that hasn’t come together. However, creator Brad Ingelsby did produce what you might call a spiritual sequel in 2025 with Task, which was also set in the American “Rust Belt” and seems primed to make an impact at this year’s Emmys.

As previously reported, that show will get a second season, with Mark Ruffalo returning as FBI agent Tom Brandis to head up a new interagency task force. Now

socially refined, as opposed to Wild’s hardscrabble upbringing. The two became reluctant partners and took on cases the police wouldn’t pursue.

Curtis was in his late 40s when he agreed to the role, and while he knew he was no longer the young stud who made all the girls swoon, he still insisted on doing his own stunt work. His character drove a factory-provided Ferrari on the show, while Moore rolled around in an Aston Martin — a very fitting vehicle given that, in 1973, he landed the career-defining role of James Bond.

All 24 episodes of The Persuaders! are available on DVD via such outlets as Amazon.ca

comes news, per multiple outlets, that Ingelsby plans to give viewers another little taste of Easttown by incorporating a key character from that show into season two of Task. No, it’s not Kate Winslet’s titular detective — but rather her best pal Lori Ross, played in an Emmy-winning performance by Julianne Nicholson

Fans will recall that Lori spent season one of Easttown harbouring a devastating secret that put her loyalty to Mare in direct conflict with her loyalty to

family. It’s unknown exactly how she’ll factor into Task

Currently filming in anticipation of a 2027 release on HBO, that next chapter of Task findsBrandis and his reconstituted force (after most of the original team wound up dead or in jail) being pulled into a case wherein “the deeper the operation runs, the harder it is to tell who’s the target.”

In the process, they’ll reportedly square off with a shady DEA agent played by two-time Oscar winner Mahershala Ali (Moonlight, Green Book).

Victim’s Brutality

Avid TV viewers might not have expected the next great crime thriller to spring from the mind of the woman who created goofy Fox sitcom New Girl . . . but, well, that’s precisely what’s happened.

Yes, writer Elizabeth Meriwether, fresh off an Emy nomination for Dying for Sex, sticks with Hulu/Disney+ to put her own particular spin on the well-worn serial killer genre.

Shameless alum Emmy Rossum plays Alice, a rookie FBI agent on the hunt for a mysterious girl who’s leaving a trail of dead men across the Big Apple. But this perp is far from a thrill killer — motivated instead by an insatiable desire for revenge against those who use, abuse and discard women. At the same time, our sleuth herself is sorting through a life-altering trauma — creating an unexpected intimacy between cop and killer.

Playing that killer is Irish actress Lola Petticrew (late of

political thriller Say Nothing), in an electric, terrifying, hilarious performance reminiscent of Killing Eve’s Jodie Comer. The rest of the cast includes Broadway great Quincy Tyler Bernstine as Alice’s boss Nora — a passionate FBI agent on the verge of burnout after a long career handling atrocities and bureaucracies; and Godless’ Scoot McNairy as Danny, essentially Alice’s “work husband” from her pre-FBI days with the NYPD, who jumps at the chance to partner with his old pal once more and help unravel what will prove to be a thoroughly unpredictable mystery. Furious opens with a threeepisode premiere on Monday, unrolling one-a-week thereafter.

SEASON PREMIERE

A DEAD RECKONING?

Of all the “unlikely alliances” that have been forged in The Walking Dead and its myriad sequels, none were unlikelier than that of Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dea Morgan) — what with the latter bludgeoning the former’s husband to death with a baseball bat and all.

And, to be sure, across the first two seasons of Dead City, their volatile partnership — forced upon them when Maggie’s son was kidnapped and spirited away to New York by an old frenemy of Negan’s — has been defined largely by dysfunctionality at best and outright betrayal at worst.

Yet season three might just mark a turning point for the duo, as they work together to build a new community in Manhattan from the ashes of the despots who turned the Big Apple rotten before our heroes’ arrival.

Speaking with Variety about the evolution of the characters and their dynamic, Morgan said: “Negan was a great villain and now he just got more layers. He will always be this person that walked out of a trailer 11 years ago [and killed Glenn], but he’s more multidimensional. This year, there’s such a shift in their relationship that brings out yet another side of him.”

Added Cohan: “We are these unlikely allies that realize how much they can rely on each other and how much they know each other. The irony of their relationship, with how they met, is interesting.”

FRIDAY, PARAMOUNT+

Euphoria breakout Zendaya continues parlaying her small-screen success into a bustling film caeer. Indeed, from SpiderMan to Dune to The Odyssey, the Emmy winner has been on quite the hot streak.

Another flick on tht list which wasn’t quite so universally acclaimed, but certainly got audiences talking was The Drama — which hit theatres in April and now arrives on Paramount+. The latest from Norwegian auteur Kristoffer Borgli (Dream Scenario), it’s another incisive, darkly comedic act of avant-garde provocation, centring on the doomed romance between an American gal named Emma (Zendaya) and a British chap named Charlie (Robert Pattinson). Gathering with friends and

family on the eve of their wedding, the festivities take a turn when an innocent little party game leads to life-changing revelations . . . culminating in a twist for the ages.

Reviewing the film or Deadline, Pete Hammond teased: “The Drama as a title is an understatement in what [studio] A24 otherwise seems to be indicating in marketing materials is all about a wedding featuring two big movie stars, Zendaya and Robert Pattinson. On the surface that is exactly what The Drama is all about, but rather than the nuptials and feel-good tropes of most movies set around upcoming weddings, this one is crashed by the realities of relationships and questions about just how well we really know the person closest to us in life.”

The Fight of His Life

Following the massive, ongoing success of the Power universe, rapper-turned-TV producer 50 Cent lends his street cred to another gritty drama. This one follows a hard-luck young man named Duke (Howard Charles, The Musketeers) — a U.K. boxing champ whose promising career was K.O.-ed when he was sent away for a crime he didn’t commit. Now, he’s out of prison and out for revenge against the crime boss he believes set him up (For Life’s Nicholas Pinnock).

DSERIES PREMIERE

uring nine seasons and countless adventures across the multiverse, Rick and Morty has racked up plenty of fan-fave characters — Bird Person, Space Beth, Evil Morty et al. Now, for the fist time, one of ’em gets a spinoff !

Over the years, petty, powerhungry president of the United States Andre Curtis (voiced by Keith David) has been, by turns, a reluctant ally and a bitter enemy of mad scientist Rick Sanchez.

Now, we’ll follow the commander-in-chief as he and his hapless Oval Office staffers (including Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s Stephanie Beatriz and Community’s Jim Rash) “tackle the kind of crises that Rick

Sanchez could never be bothered with — from interdimensional diplomacy to paranormal investigations and unexplained phenomena.”

In announcing the series last year, exec producers Dan Harmon and James Siciliano said: “President Curtis has always been one of our favourite characters to write — he’s the only person in the multiverse who can go toe-to-toe with Rick and still hold office. Now we finally

get to go on sci-fi missions fom Curtis’ point of view. And with Keith David leading the charge, it’s going to be a wild ride.”

For his part, David enthused: “President Curtis has always been a blast to play. Getting to explore his world more deeply in this new series is a dream. I can’t wait for fans to see what kind of chaos he stirs up when Rick isn’t around to steal the spotlight.”

Tune in a half-hour before the spinoff ’s premiere to catch Rick and Morty’s season-nine final.

SILLY & CHIC

Fashion, as they say, is cyclical. Every trend will eventually come back around again, given enough time. You could say such is the case for The Devil Wears Prada. Or, you could say it never went out of style to begin with.

The 2006 original grossed well over US$300 million at the box offi, and in the two decades that followed, the audience for this sumptuous, playfully satirical fashion-world comedy only grew — to the point that the 2026 sequel doubled its predecessor’s gross.

Now, this Wednesday, The Devil Wears Prada 2 arrives on streaming, inviting the few who didn’t flock to see it in theatres to catch up with ruthless, Anna Wintour-inspired magazine editor Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep) and her exassistant Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway). These days, Runway magazine is under fire for irresponsible reporting — which leads ownership to hire Andy, now a respected journalist, as the new features editor . . . without Miranda’s knowledge.

Also back in the mix are Emily Blunt as Miranda’s other ex-assistant Emily Charlton, who now works as an executive with Dior, and Stanley Tucci as Miranda’s longtime creative director and Andy’s unlikely mentor Nigel Kipling. Plus, returning to helm it all is original director David Frankel

Indeed, Snoopy himself remains as popular today, with new generations, as he was decades ago. Speaking to People magazine in 2024, popculture historian Roy Schwartz opined: “Snoopy never really went anywhere. He’s still a Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade balloon, still found in every toy store, still [after a break] a mascot for MetLife . . . And Snoopy has always been versatile, with a variety of moods, expressions, outfits and scenarios over the decades, which makes him perfect for memes and GIFs.”

“I also think that, as a cute but irreverent dog, he fits the Kwaii culture that’s mainstreamed among Gen Z-ers,” Schwartz continued. “And if you want to dig deeper, I’d say that he’s an icon of nostalgia, of a comforting yesteryear, which is a big part of current Gen Z and millennial culture.”

Italian food isn’t just a cuisine — it’s a religion — dishes aren’t just cooked, they are a lived experience. I’m looking forward to showing viewers what I’ve created and sharing some accessible recipes that everybody can use to bring a taste of Italy into their homes.”

Behind the Laughter

When he was invited to join the cast of Saturday Night Live in 1990, Chris Farley had fulfilled a lifelong dream. Following in the footsteps of his idol John Belushi, Farley quickly became one of the show’s breakout stars, a path that ultimately led to movies and huge stardom.

Sadly, Farley also shared Belushi’s insatiable appetites — and, like his predecessor, died of a drug overdose at the age of 33. Clearly, there’s a lot to unpack in a documentary examining the comedian’s life, and I Am Chris

This touching short film explores the concepts of aging, memory and identity — and the power of creative connection.

This episode of the Postcards From series takes viewers to Newfoundland’s Gros Morne National Park. Host Christa Couture experiences local Newfoundland traditions such as feasting on cod tongues, enjoying a “shed jam” and getting “Screeched in” as an honorary Newfoundlander.

Her Cheating Heart

This true-crime documentary details the 2020 murder of Jamie Faith in Dallas, Texas, exposing how his seemingly devoted wife, Jennifer Faith, manipulated her high school boyfriend, Darrin Lopez, into killing her husband. At first, police investigated the murder as a random act of violence, until eventually discovering incriminating phone data and surveillance video revealing that Jennifer had orchestrated the plot while carrying on an affai.

COMING SOON

YOUR WEEKLY SCOOP ON NEW TV PROJECTS IN THE WORKS

THE UPCOMING SEASON of Only Murders in the Building will find Chales (Steve Martin), Oliver (Martin Short) and Mabel (Selena Gomez) tackling the murder of fellow podcaster Cinda Canning (Tina Fey) — only they won’t be in New York, but across the pond in merry old London, England, instead.

With the new locale comes an opportunity to tap into the very rich pool of British and Irish talent — and the show has been quick to seize that opportunity, having added a Hobbit, a Spice Girl and two (well, technically three) Doctors to its cast.

A London Whodunit

The following are set to appear as recurring guest stars: Jennifer Saunders (Absolutely Fabulous); Bridgerton’s Simone Ashley and Nicola Coughlan; Oscar winner Jim Broadbent (Iris); Martin Freeman (The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey); former Spice Girls member Geri Halliwell-Horner, Adrian Lukis (The Crown); Richard Ayoade (The IT Crowd); Jamie Demetriou (Fleabag); Anjana Vasan (Black Mirror); Jane Horrocks (Bloods); Derek Jacobi (Vicious); Lesley Nicol (Downton Abbey); Sean Teale (Skins); Amar Chadha-Patel

(Willow); Rhea Norwood (Heartstopper); Matthew Beard (Vienna Blood); Sharon Horgan (Bad Sisters); and Kathryn Hunter (Poor Things).

And let’s not forget two former leads of Doctor Who: Jodie Whittaker, who played the 13th Doctor, and David Tennant, who played both the 10th and 14th Doctor.

That’s a long, long list of famous guest stars, but that’s become the norm for Only Murders in the Building, which has seen a slew of A-listers drifting in and out of said building, the Arconia on Manhattan’s Upper West Side.

Character details are a closely guarded secret for now — also the norm for this show. But Tennant’s participation is interesting, given his connection to Fey. She specifically hd him in mind for the role of Anne’s (Kerri Kenney-Silver) Italian love interest in the second-season finale of etflixs The Four Seasons, as co-creator Tracey Wigfiel explained in an interview with Decider: “The fist [thing Tina] said was, ‘Well, someone like David Tennant, like a David Tennant kind of guy, as her [Anne’s] neighbour.’”

The upcoming sixth season of Only Murders in the Building will follow the gang to London, where a new murder mystery awaits.

SCOOBY SHAPING UP

Netflix is preparing to unveil its upcomin live-action Scooby-Doo series, which will introduce the franchise’s first-ever real (not animated or CGI) Scooby-Doo.

A floppy-eared, chocolate-coloured Great Dane puppy is donning the iconic teal collar in Scooby-Doo: Origins, which is being filmed in Atlanta and slated for release in 2027.

The story finds the gang pre Mystery Inc., a summer camp friends Shaggy (Tanner Hagen, The Pitt) and Daphne (Mckenna Grace, Young Sheldon) get embroiled in the mystery surrounding a lost puppy that may have witnessed a supernatural murder, with townie Velma (Abby Ryder Fortson, Transparent) and new kid Fred (Maxwell Jenkins, Lost in Space) also lending a hand. Together, “they set out to solve the case that is pulling each of them into a creepy nightmare that threatens to expose all of their secrets,” according to the upcoming series’ logline.

Paul Walter Hauser (Black Bird) is also listed

as a series regular, but no character details have been shared, so his involvement has been the subject of much speculation.

Similarly, a long list of guest stars have been announced, all in similarly undisclosed roles. They include Sara Gilbert (The Conners), Bruce McGill (Reacher), Sherilyn Fenn (Twin Peaks), Rusty Schwimmer (The Righteous Gemstones), Peter Macon (The Orville) and many others.

Scooby-Doo: Origins will be executive produced by Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg, along with Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Leigh London Redman, André Nemec, Jeff Pinkne , Adrienne Erickson and Toby Haynes (with the latter directing the pilot episode).

“One of my firstand favourite jobs in Hollywood was sitting with Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera while they signed animation cels,” says Berlanti. “Josh and Scott and everyone at Midnight Radio have crafted a story that captures their amazing spirits and their genius creation.”

Netflix has already transformed a kids game into a TV game show with Floor is Lava, and now the streaming service is planning on doing the same thing with another classic game with upcoming TV show Simon Says

The playground classic, which usually involves children following the instructions issued after “Simon” tells them what to do (but only if the command starts with “Simon says . . .”), is about to get the Netflix treatment. Its rules and gameplay have inspired a new reality competition that will be coming to the streaming service in 2027.

Netflix promises that its version will add some big twists to the classic gameplay. “This isn’t the Simon you remember from recess,” the streamer

declared in a tongue-in-cheek press release. “In a mischievous and highstakes twist, contestants will face a gauntlet of cunning challenges, strategic mind games, and unexpected pivots as they compete for a life-changing prize”

Showrunner Emer Harkin (MTV’s The Challenge) and executive producers Julie Pizzi, Rupert Dobson and Gayani Wanigaratne will bring Simon’s sinister sense of humour to life.

Simon Says, which is being produced by Bunim/Murray Productions (part of Banijay Americas), joins Netflixs growing slate of competition series, including The Golden Ticket, Squid Game: The Challenge, Million Dollar Secret, Is It Cake?, Win the Mall and several others.

CROSSWORD

Place a number in the empty boxes in such a way that each row across, each column down and each small 9-box square contains all of the numbers from one to nine.

The idea of Go Figure is to arrive at the fi gures given at the bottom and right-hand columns of the diagram by following the arithmetic signs in the order the are given (that is, from left to right and top to bottom). Use only the numbers below the diagram to complete its blank squares and use each of the nine numbers only once.

WEDNESDAY,

HERE IS A PARTICULAR KIND of heroine that Reese Witherspoon is attracted to as a producer: A strong woman who is going to be hit with insurmountable obstacles, and, against all odds, she will overcome them. was a perfect Hello Sunshine heroine is her unbelievable strength.”

For Witherspoon and Neustadter, there was only one woman they believed would perfectly portray the resourceful grifter. “It had to be Anya Taylor-Joy. I mean, she’s everything,” raves Neustadter. “You think about all her different performances — The Queen’s Gambit, Furiosa — they show that she can truly do anything. Physically, she had the strength to bring this character to life because there is a lot that Lucky’s going through and she is really, truly on the run from beginning to end. But also, emotionally, we needed an actress who could peel back all the layers of this character. This is someone who is heartbroken and hurt in a lot of different ways and she’s processing that over the course of seven episodes.”

of that woman. “Reese read the book, called me and said, ‘You have to drop everything and read this book. You’re going to love it,’” says Lauren Neustadter, president of television and film t Witherspoon’s production company Hello Sunshine. “I dropped everything. I read it. And I fell head over heels for Lucky.”

Lucky Armstrong is introduced to viewers as a woman in dire straits. She wakes up after a wild night in Vegas — her husband is gone, taking the obscene amount of money the two had just stolen with him. Now, more than one person wants her head. “It’s really a full-throttle kind of story,” says Neustadter. “Lucky’s sprinting through a casino. Lucky’s in car chases. There’s a lot of stuff ou’ve never seen in Hello Sunshine shows that we are dipping our toe into here. But what made us know that Lucky

To guide them through the character’s journey, Taylor-Joy (who also serves as executive producer) and Hello Sunshine looked to Jonathan Tropper, the creator of shows like Banshee, Warrior and Your Friends & Neighbors. Those shows, in their own way, embody the genres that make up Lucky. “Jonathan was a really trusted partner for us because he knows how to elegantly architect character, but also really do an amazing job of plotting out twists, turns and highoctane action,” says Neustadter. “He was an incredible collaborator, and I think he really loved Lucky.”

Tropper was, in fact, immediately drawn to the woman on the run from the source material. But what the screenwriter was most excited about exploring was never the book’s high-speed

, Discovery is devoting seven days of primetime programming to Shark Week. As always, the offerings are eclectic and fascinating. Here’s what’s coming up during the 2026 edition of Shark Week.

After a recent series of shark encounters off the orean Peninsula, actor and comedian Ken Jeong joins forces with singer and shark aficiondo REI AMI on a mission to reshape the perception of sharks across East Asia and around the globe — all fuelled by the power of K-Pop music.

SUNDAY AT 5 P.M. & 8 P.M.

Air Jaws: Red, White and Breach

Across the California coastline, a new phenomenon is emerging as great white sharks are captured on fil breaching like never before. Filmmaker Jeff urr, marine biologist Alison Towner and cinematographer Andy Casagrande set out to capture this unprecedented behaviour.

SUNDAY AT 6 P.M. & 9 P.M.

Invasion of the Mega Sharks

Shark researcher Dr. Neil Hammerschlag, joined by Shark Week expert Paul de Gelder, leads a team on a high-risk mission to track down “Big Rose,” a record-breaking great white believed to be one of largest predators in the North Atlantic. Using innovative tagging technology and daring fiel operations, they venture to a newly discovered shark hotspot off ova Scotia aiming to transform our understanding of these ocean giants. SUNDAY AT 7 P.M. & 10 P.M.

Bull Shark Dinner Bell

Shark attack survivor and advocate Paul de Gelder teams up with apex predator specialist Rosie Moore in Jupiter, Florida, to investigate what triggers giant bull sharks to confront humans, testing human behaviour in the ocean, extreme weather events and prey preferences to determine what factors ring the loudest dinner bell.

MONDAY AT 5 P.M. & 8 P.M.

House of Sharks

Off the oast of New Zealand lies a hidden shark battleground, where three distinct groups of great whites organize into competing “houses” and may be competing with one another to gain control of a major seal feeding ground. Marine biologist Dr. Tristan Guttridge and underwater cinematographer Kina Scollay venture into the middle of the action on an

epic expedition, using brand new builds and massive blood bombs to document this new competitive behaviour. As they investigate, they uncover the possibility that these clans of great whites recognize kin and return season after season to their ancestral territories, raising the theory that these predators aren’t solitary hunters, but rival dynasties at war. MONDAY AT 6 P.M. & 9 P.M.

this alarming shift in behaviour, Dr. Tristan Guttridge places himself directly in the path of an orca encounter, using their attacks on boats to reveal how these predators hunt and ultimately, how they may be taking down great white sharks. TUESDAY AT 6 P.M. & 9 P.M.

Expedition X: Atomic Sharks

Biggest Mako on Earth

For decades, rumours have swirled about massive, 15 to 20-foot mako sharks patrolling the deep waters off outhern California. Long dismissed as fisherme’s tales, new footage — along with a recently published photo capturing a mako that appears to push 15 feet — is now forcing scientists to rethink everything they know about these oceanic apex predators. Marine biologist Dr. Tristan Guttridge, alongside conservationist Kendyl Berna and shark tagger Keith Poe, leads an investigation to determine whether the world’s biggest mako is real — and hunting in the coastal waters of Santa Catalina. MONDAY AT 7 P.M. & 10 P.M.

Jurassic Sharks

In a Shark Week fist, revolutionary CGI resurrects the ocean’s most bizarre Jurassic sharks, bringing them to life like never before. Guided by the rare living sharks that once shared their seas, real-world expeditions seamlessly merge with cutting-edge visual effects to uncover stories from the deep and prehistoric seas in ways never before possible.

TUESDAY AT 5 P.M. & 8 P.M.

Jaws vs Orca

For millennia, the great white shark has reigned as the ocean’s ultimate apex predator. But now, a new challenger is emerging: the killer whale. Around the world, sharks are washing ashore with their livers removed with chilling precision while in the Strait of Gibraltar, orcas are targeting sailboats — ramming hulls, crippling rudders and sinking vessels. To investigate

Phil Torres and Heather Amaro travel 5,000 miles west of the U.S. to the remote Marshall Islands, home to the world’s largest shark sanctuary, where apex predators are exhibiting highly aggressive behaviours and erratic swimming patterns. Between 1946 and 1958, the United States military detonated 67 nuclear bombs around the island, raising questions about their lasting impact on marine life. Now, the team dives into these dangerous waters to investigate reports of “mutant” sharks and uncover whether atomic blasts could be to blame.

WEDNESDAY AT 5 P.M. & 8 P.M.

Expedition Unknown: Shark Secrets

Global explorer Josh Gates travels back in time and dives into the history behind some of the world’s most infamous shark encounters, from the earliest known shark attack to the mystery surrounding the shark feeding frenzy faced by sailors following the sinking of the USS Indianapolis in remote waters. He also investigates the legendary “Stronsay Beast,” a mysterious creature that washed ashore in Scotland in 1808, long thought to be a sea monster. But could it in fact be the remains of a massive shark?

WEDNESDAY AT 6 P.M. & 9 P.M.

Alien Sharks: Untamed America

In celebration of America’s 250th anniversary, wildlife biologist Forrest Galante embarks on a quest to find the nation’s most bizarre and dangerous alien sharks — from glowing swell sharks to elusive sawfish. A hihlight finds Galante diving into 300-foot-deep waters off the oast of New England, bolstered by the use of drone and spotter plane surveillance, as he swims alongside the elusive and massive basking shark. WEDNESDAY AT 7 P.M. & 10 P.M.

Shark Week
DISCOVERY CHANNEL
A great white goes for the bait in Invasion Of The Mega Sharks

From features to interviews to our weekly top 10 recommendations, TV Week’s website delivers online highlights and more

The television landscape is constantly evolving and never stops moving. From new recommendations to familiar favourites, TV Week expands our mission to guide viewers through the numerous viewing choices available through the enhanced website TVWEEKONLINE.CA

What Shark Attacked?

Shark attacks are extremely rare, but when they happen, the fist question is always the same: what kind of shark was it? Leading shark scientists Tom “Blowfis” Hird and Rosie Moore, alongside conservationist Kinga Philipps, investigate mysterious attacks from around the world using cutting-edge forensic analysis — including bite pattern comparison, geographic profilin, video evidence, and eyewitness testimony — to identify the species responsible and uncover why these life-threatening encounters occur. Hird is quick to point out that while shark attacks are rare, when they do occur they can be devastating. “Let’s be very crystal clear here: if a bull shark, or a tiger, or a great white did want to prey on a human, there would be no body.”

THURSDAY AT 5 P.M. & 8 P.M.

How to Train a Great White

Marine biologist Dr. Tristan Guttridge ventures into the shark-infested waters of New Zealand to answer a provocative question: can sharks be trained? Using techniques pioneered by the U.S. Navy to train dolphins in complex cognitive tasks, the team applies similar methods to great white sharks, testing whether these apex predators can learn, solve problems and respond to cues. If successful, the experiment can potentially redefin shark intelligence and transform our understanding of one of the ocean’s most misunderstood predators. Interviewed about the new special, Guttridge emphasizes the importance of using state-of-the-art diving gear. “Working with sharks in dynamic environments it is critical to have gear you can rely on that keeps you safe,” he says.

THURSDAY AT 6 P.M. & 9 P.M.

Ultimate Shark Dive

World-class high diver Molly Carlson leaps from a helicopter hovering above the open ocean in a bid to complete the highest free-fall dive in Shark Week history, targeting a narrow plexiglass cage surrounded by circling reef sharks, or risking a direct plunge into a chum-filled eeding frenzy where seconds mean survival. From concept to execution, this fearless athlete will push herself to the limit with a record-setting stunt that no high diver has ever attempted.

THURSDAY AT 7 P.M. & 10 P.M.

Sharkzilla Takes New York

After a wave of mauled marine life washes ashore in New York, conservation biologist Dr. Craig O’Connell launches an investigation to find the culprit. When it leds to an old

nuclear dumping ground teeming with great whites and makos, he is left with the chilling theory that the predator may be radioactive. A deeper dive reveals an unexpected hotspot for massive makos off the oast of the Hamptons, suggesting that these waters may be hiding something even bigger beneath the surface. FRIDAY AT 6 P.M. & 9 P.M.

My Strange Shark Addiction

How far will people go to fuel their fascination with sharks? For four devoted shark “fin-tics,” their obsession shapes every aspect of their lives, and their love for sharks goes way deeper than claiming a favorite animal. The special introduces a dentist who spends every spare moment searching for life-size shark replicas — and yes, that dentist’s home is overwhelmed by a model shark collection. Additionally, viewers will meet a woman who insists she has a special connection with her shark “boyfriend.” Beyond that, there’s also a world-record holder covered in shark tattoos. All told, this special explores how their daily routines, relationships and finanes revolve entirely these apex predators. FRIDAY AT 7 P.M. & 10 P.M.

Great White Highway

Great white sharks are pushing farther up the East coast than ever before and in far greater numbers leading to close encounters, forcing beach closures, and leaving locals wondering where the next attack could happen. Now, a daring team of shark scientists race to install high-tech receivers and tag as many great whites as possible before another harrowing incident rocks the country.

SATURDAY. AUGUST 1 AT 5 P.M. & 8 P.M.

Thresher Shark: Stun to Kill

The physics behind the thresher shark’s devastating tail strike has long remained a mystery —until now. For the fist time ever, the discovery of a shallow-water feeding ground has made observing this behaviour possible. Now, shark scientist Dr. Craig O’Connell and marine biologist Aliah Banchik dive into the direct line of fie as they attempt to reveal exactly how these predators use their tails to stun and kill.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 1 AT 6 P.M. & 9 P.M.

DIGGING DEEP

THE MYSTERY DEEPENS IN THE SCI-FI THRILLER SILO

TO EXPECT EASY ANSWERS

from Silo is to not know the post-apocalyptic drama. In its third and second-to-last season, the mystery of why tens of thousands of people live in bunkers extending 144 levels below ground remains unsolved. But as we get closer to the end, series creator Graham Yost promises light at the end of the tunnel, quite literally. “We all wanted to go out a little,” he says. “We want the audience to be able to see some sky.”

Rebecca Ferguson is Juliet, an engineer who unexpectedly finds herself becoming sheriff, and then mayor of the subterranean community.

THIRD SEASON OF

The sky appears in a pre-silo world, where humanity still lives above ground. At the end of the second season, viewers were briefly intoduced to United States congressman Daniel Keene (Ashley Zukerman) and investigative journalist Helen Drew (Jessica Henwick) in the before times. That storyline, which will provide answers for how we ended up in the silos, picks back up in season three, where in a not-so-distant future to our present, a retaliatory U.S. mission in Iran has piqued Helen’s interest. “Helen knows that there is something afoot here and the powers that be are lying,” says Henwick.

She believes that Daniel, whose fihter pilot sister Charlotte (Jessica Brown Findlay) is part of said mission, can help crack the case for

the good of the public. “Daniel does believe in service, and I think he starts the series knowing that he lives in a compromised world but believing that the system will be able to self-correct itself,” says Zuckerman. “Over the course of the series that erodes.” Much of that has to do with the consequences of the mission, which leads to his sister losing her memory. “Not only does he have to live with the tragedy of essentially losing his sister, he has to actually figue out what he wants from life,” says Zuckerman. “We all know that we live in a compromised world and how different characters deal with that is the question of the show.”

Charlotte’s memory loss is mirrored in Silo 18, where Juliette (Rebecca Ferguson) is now mayor, but without any recollection of what

happened after her return from Silo 17 — nor the fi e that allegedly took the life of Bernard Holland (Tim Robbins), head of the IT Department. “There’s a forced mayorship that she has to live through and there’s information about who she was. But [her] truth doesn’t feel right compared to the information being given to her,” says Ferguson.

Lack of tenacity has never been the former mechanic’s problem, though. “You can take her memory away, but you can’t take the questioning away. I think that’s why we love her. Juliette is a woman of action. She asks a question. If she doesn’t get an answer, she will come at it from another angle. She will activate the help she needs,” says Ferguson.

‘‘ WE ALL WANTED TO GO OUT A LITTLE. WE WANT THE AUDIENCE TO BE ABLE TO SEE SOME SKY.”

Additionally, her body is telling her something, whereas the answers she is given don’t reflect tht. “The burns, there’s a story behind them, and she wants to go to the root of all that,” says Ferguson. “There’s a repetition of information that doesn’t make sense. Juliette’s cause is that constant, ‘Why, why, why? Your answer is not correct. Why?’ There’s an unsettled feeling in Juliette. There’s something off and she doesn’t know what it is. She doesn’t really know entirely who she is. But something happens at the end of the fist episode where Juliette gets a message and if she wasn’t Juliette, she’d just go, “Eh, that doesn’t apply to me.” But that’s one of the core principles [of identity] — if you lose your memory, you’re either a kind person or not a kind person. Juliette is always an inquisitive person.”

The information being fed to her is predominantly coming from Camille Sims (Alexandria Riley) who has taken over as head of IT. “Juliette’s the problem for Camille, or she feels she is,” says Riley. “There’s a lot of

manipulation going on there, a lot of puppetry, because this is the person standing between their survival and God knows what else.” Camille’s unwavering commitment to the Legacy — a computer demanding she suppress Juliette’s memories with drugs — is also coming between Camille and her husband Robert (Common), the head of security for Judicial in the silo. “Robert was always bouncing his thoughts and fears off of Camille, but once Camille is given the position that Robert wanted, and can’t share anything with him, the dynamic has shifted,” says Common. “Her idea of saving the silo is now going in the opposite direction of what Robert believes to be the right way. Robert is seeing that the powers that be are not what he thought they were. So, Robert’s dealing with his beliefs being shattered and he doesn’t have a wife that’s present for him. It’s a lot to deal with.”

Silo continues to build its central mystery, but getting to a point where real answers are being dispensed has been a real thrill for those making the series. “It’s fantastic,” enthuses Ferguson. “From our perspective as actors, it puts our character in another equilibrium. There was another baseline we could work off o. That

was really fun.” Yet with 10 episodes filmed out of oder, even great answers sometimes need to be questioned. “We had to constantly go back to Graham and go, ‘Whoa, wait, should we give this away?’” says Ferguson.

Although Hugh Howey’s books are leading the way, Yost is grateful for all the input he gets from Team Silo as the show nears its end. “Harriet Walters noticed something in a scene that she wasn’t in. She said, ‘Actually, this doesn’t make sense because these two characters already know this.’

And I realized, ‘Oh, I wrote that scene and I screwed up.’ And then we got a note from the Japanese translation team and they said, ‘There’s this visual effect you have. It doesn’t really match what’s in the script.’ And we’re like, “Oh s***, you’re right,” says Yost. “Everyone is trying to defend the integrity of the story. I’m sure at the end of the series, people could write a long paper on all the things we didn’t answer or screwed up or didn’t match up, but we did our best.”

‘‘ WE ALL KNOW THAT WE LIVE IN A COMPROMISED WORLD AND HOW DIFFERENT CHARACTERS DEAL WITH THAT IS THE QUESTION OF THE SHOW.”
Camile (Alexandria Riley) has taken over as head of IT after the apparent death of Bernard (Tim Robbins).

HER PRIVATE HELL

STARRING Sophie Thatcher, Charles Melton, Havana Rose Liu, Kristine Froseth, Dougray Scott, Diego Calva, Shioli Kutsuna

Directed by Nicolas Winding Refn, his first film in nearly decade is a sci-fi thriller set in a futuristic metropolis engulfe in a deadly mist. Her Own Private Hell follows a troubled young woman named Elle (Sophie Thatcher) as she searches for her father. During her quest, Elle’s path collides with an American G.I. (Charles Melton) who’s on a mission of his own, to rescue his daughter. According to Refn, casting Thatcher in the role proved the movie’s linchpin. “Once Sophie was cast as the lead, it was then building around her,” Refn recalled in an interview with Deadline. “Sophie has that thing when the camera turns on, she becomes the centre of everything. She looks like a classic movie star from the 1930s and ’40s when there was a spunkiness to the female-driven characters. At the same time, there’s a gentleness and punk attitude.”

Motor City

STARRING Alan Ritchson, Shailene Woodley, Ben Foster, Pablo Schreiber

Sia: Nostalgic for the Present

STARRING Sia, Maddie Ziegler, Kristen Wiig, Paul Dano, Gaby Hoffmann, Tig Notar

Described as “a bold, genre-defying experience,” this documentary chronicles singer-songwriter Sia’s electrifying 2016 headlining performance at Coachella. Bursting with inventive choreography and creative stagecraft, Sia presented a precise replica of this show in every city she visited when embarking on her world tour that same year.

Pumped-up Reacher star Alan Ritchson stars in this audacious action flick from director Potsy Poncirelli (Greedy People). Set in 1970s Detroit, Ritchson plays a working-class romantic framed by a ruthless gangster after falling for his girlfriend. After years in prison, he returns with only one mission: revenge. The big twist: the film features almost no dialogue whatsoever, with the entire story told entirely through its numerous action sequences.

A LAST WORD THE

Q In being an action comedy that’s centred around two women in their 50s — challenging preconceptions about the genre itself — would you say this is an empowering show?

A HANNAH: Oh my gosh, it’s so empowering. And I hope every little girl from . . . what’s our age limit on this? Fifteen and upwards, walks away from their screen and just screams to the rafters that, “I can do it. I can do it all.”

Q In a lot of action comedies, the character aspect — the exploration of the characters, how they grow and evolve — is short-changed, treated as secondary to the action set pieces and the goofy hijinks. But this show is very much rooted in character, in exploring female friendship and the female experience for women of this age. Do you think it’s a bit of a tonal magic trick that the series is able to be a kinetic, exciting action comedy and a really satisfying character study at the same time?

Hannah Waddingham & Octavia Spencer

A OCTAVIA: Absolutely. Well, it starts with the script. If it’s not on the page, then it will not translate. We were very lucky that the person who got us to say yes on the very fist date [creator Tessa Coates] was able to execute it when she turned the outline into pages. And because she understands that there’s a dearth of work for women, and certainly women who are over 40, she needed to ensure that we both had compelling storylines and things beyond the action — because you might come for the action, but you’ll stay for the friendship. At least, that’s what we hope.

HANNAH: Yeah, it wouldn’t have mattered how much we roll a car. It wouldn’t have mattered how many guns are shot or people are slain. It wouldn’t matter if we didn’t have this heart — the beating heart, and then the broken heart.

It wouldn’t have mattered how much we roll a car. It wouldn’t have mattered how many guns are shot or people are slain. It wouldn’t matter if we didn’t have this heart — the beating heart, and then the broken heart.”

Q What was it like for you as performers balancing the action, the comedy and the poignant emotional beats — all these different genres, different sensibilitie?

A

HANNAH: Tessa Coates has written such an immaculate script that we just had to honour it every day, and dig deep and make sure that we were keeping that balance ourselves that she’d already put there. We were very spoiled, really . . .

OCTAVIA: Yeah, we basically focused on the script and what was written. I think we knew that it had to strike a certain tone, but the thing about Hannah and I — and whether it was a scene with Hannah, whether it was a scene with Ed [Skrein, co-star] — the most important thing was always finding the truth. And out of tht, sometimes it would be funny, sometimes it would be heartbreaking. We played what was real . . . HANNAH: Yeah, it’s trying to not “comment” on the comedy or the drama, and just play truth.

Q Debbie finds out in the first episo that Judith, her dearest friend, has been lying to her for all these years about being an international assassin. Octavia, what intrigued you about that, as a mindset to dig into?

A OCTAVIA: I think to learn a person that you have loved half as long as you’ve lived is not at all who you thought they were is destabilizing . . . you know, there are three relationships that are key to Debbie’s life: her

relationship with Judith, her relationship with her husband and her relationship with her kids. Two of those relationships are failing, and I think Debbie starts to internalize that and wonder, how could she have been so wrong? So, there’s a lot of inner work that has to happen. But it’s much more fun getting to play it all out and actually have real conversations with Judith [after the revelation of her secret].

HANNAH: I would say the level of deceit for Debbie is so great because, if she was honest with herself, she probably already realizes that there’s trouble ahead. You know, you can tell yourself that a relationship is working . . . I mean, the wheels come off so deeply or Debbie.

Q In what ways did this show spark your creativity? How does it stand out from all the many projects you’ve both done in the past?

A OCTAVIA: Well, as a producer, I love looking for things that probably wouldn’t have been offered. And to find oles like these . . . they’re not written. They’re just not written. To have someone write such compelling characters, build this world of subterfuge, and build it around two women — and two women who are over the age of 40 — was exciting for me.

HANNAH: And also, how clever it is for them to make absolutely two equal characters — going through such very different things in their lives, but total partners in crime, as it were. Not one feeding the other. That’s a tall

CURRENT GIG

A heartfelt exploration of friendship that plays out against the backdrop of a globe-trotting action comedy, eight-part series Ride or Die follows Debbie (Octavia Spencer), the savvy wife of a rising U.K. politician (whose rise is due entirely to her own, unsung efforts). Her best pal is Judith (Hannah Waddingham), who claims to be an accountant, but is really an assassin. And alas, when Judith’s secret life is suddenly, bloodily exposed, both women are forced on the run as they untangle an insidious conspiracy.

order as well, to write two such completely loaded characters.

Q

A

The show is an absolute blast to watch. Was it that much fun to fil?

HANNAH: It was all just a massive privilege. It’s fun to make because we knew that we had something juicy in our hands.

OCTAVIA: Let me tell you something: when we heard the pitch, what the show was going to be . . . the fist thing you don’t do is say yes in the room. You give yourself time to think it over. And then you’ll tell your team to say yes on your behalf. We both said yes right after we heard the pitch. We bought the idea of the show in the room — and so did everyone else that we took the project to. So, then we realized we had something special on our hands and we had to give it 1,000 per cent, whether it’s the comedy or the action. I mean, we’re both very committed to the project, but also very committed to each of our processes to ensure success for not only what we were trying to achieve with the show, but what it means for us — because these characters are complete departures for us.

HANNAH: And there was no space to go in half-mast.

MEMORABLE ROLES

A ubiquitous and indelible performer, Octavia Spencer’s breakthrough came in 2011, playing 1960s Mississippi maid Minny Jackson in The Help — a role that earned her an Oscar. The Alabama native has also appeared memorably in films lie Hidden Figures, The Shape of Water and Ma. On TV, she led short-lived Fox medical dramedy Red Band Society and Apple TV mystery Truth Be Told. Hannah Waddingham, meanwhile, got her break in 2020, starring as football club owner Rebecca Welton on Apple’s zeitgeist-throttling hit Ted Lasso, landing herself an Emmy in the process. Since then, you’ve seen her in such buzzy flicks as Hocus Pocus 2, Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning and The Fall Guy; you’ve also heard her as the voice of Greek goddess Deliria on Fox’s Krapopolis.

When we heard the pitch, what the show was going to be . . . the first thing you do’t do is say yes in the room. You give yourself time to think it over. We bought the idea of the show in the room — and so did everyone else that we took the project to. So, then we realized we had something special on our hands . . .”

Both of us had to be at full-tilt all the time.

Q The show’s action scenes are stunning — and Hannah, obviously you do the bulk of the fighting. How much of the stunt work did you handle on your own?

A

HANNAH: All of it! I’m gonna shout it from the rooftops, because women can do amazing things when they feel the urge . . .

Q Well, the producers of the Bond films are looking for a new 007. Do you want to throw your hat in the ring?

A

HANNAH: No, I’m not the new James Bond. Don’t lean into that. No! Judith Burton. Let Judith be Judith.

OCTAVIA: We want Judith to be what everyone else aspires to.

HANNAH: Yeah, let’s get every female wanting to be Judith Burton.

The powerhouse of energy and life-long vibrancy

What are mitochondria, and how do we spark them?

They are like very tiny powerplants that produce energy in every living cell of our bodies. On average, every cell has 1,500 mitochondria. Can you imagine that for their extremely small size, it’s been said that they produce, gram for gram, 10,000–50,000 times more energy than the sun?

To say that mitochondria are important to human health is grossly understating their role in our

survival. We literally would not be alive without them. They convert our food into energy, so that every other function of our body can occur as it needs to. As we age, our ability to create healthy mitochondria to support our energy demands diminishes. And because about 90% of our cellular energy is produced by mitochondria, this decline can cause significant health issues
