EDITOR’S NOTE
SCI-FI SITCOM SPINS OFF THE BIG BANG THEORY
One of the most successful sitcoms in TV history, The Big Bang Theory ran for 12 hit seasons before spawning the spinoff Young Sheldon — which in turn launched its own stillongoing spinoff, George & Mandy’s First Marriage. The Big Bang universe is expanding even further with this week’s launch of yet another spinoff, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe. This time, series creator Chuck Lorre shifts the spotlight from genius nerds Leonard (Johnny Galecki) and Sheldon (Jim Parsons) to their pal Stuart Bloom (Kevin Sussman), owner of the comic book shop that the Big Bang gang frequented.
This, however, is hardly your garden-variety sitcom. Per the synopsis, Stuart is “tasked with restoring reality after he breaks a device built by Sheldon and Leonard, accidentally bringing about a multiverse Armageddon.”
In his quest to make things right, he enlists the help of his girlfriend Denise (Lauren Lapkus), geologist friend Bert (Brian Posehn) and quantum physicist/notorious jerk Barry Kripke (John Ross Bowie). “Along the way,” the logline continues, “they meet alternate-universe versions of characters we’ve come to know and love from The Big Bang Theory. As the title implies, things don’t go well.”
Stuart Fails to Save the Universe
THURSDAY, 8 P.M., CRAVE1
Even though the new series features some familiar Big Bang Theory characters, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe is unlike anything that Lorre has done before, a bona fide scifi omedy on an epic scale featuring big-budget special effects and production values. “There’s a lot of special technical stuff,” Lorre explained during a recent appearance at the Banff orld Media Festival. “For me, in my career, a big production number was two people sitting on a couch drinking coffee. This is different. This is trying to incorporate some of that world of science fiction, antasy, into a comedy. I’m completely out of my element, which is what I wanted, which is what I was hoping to do, something that I had no experience with, and maybe I can learn as we go.”

FINAL ANSWER?
Last year, Black-ish alum Tracee Ellis Ross introduced viewers to this unique travel series celebrating the joys of solo vacationing, following her sojourns to Mexico, Morocco and Spain. This time out, she explores the unique culinary traditions of Northern Thailand, dives into the surf culture in the Australian city of Melbourne and heads to Gstaad, Switzerland, where she reconnects with the country where she spent part of her high school experience.
The genesis of the series came from her own life, having enjoyed taking a solo trip or two each year to various far-flung locales since she was in her 20s. “I did’t think it could get better than season one!” Ross gushed in an interview with People. “I had a blast in Australia, Thailand and Switzerland! There was shopping, skiing, surfing, sheet masks, elephants, first dips, delicious food, wine, cheese, chocolate and 13-year-old Tracee . . . all while enjoying my own company.”

Despite reportedly butting heads with producers and co-stars, leading man Tom Hardy will, it seems, not be leaving MobLand after all.
JUST WHEN YOU THOUGHT HE WAS OUT . . .
You had said that Tom Hardy isn’t coming back to MobLand. Does that mean the show is done-zo?
—F.J., Vancouver Island
It certainly seemed that Mr. Hardy was on his way out of Paramount+’s London-set gangster drama, amidst reported discord with producers and co-stars like Helen Mirren. While filming on season two of the smash-hit series concluded this past spring — with Hardy’s underworld fier Tommy Da Souza still a full-time participant — word was that the temperamental actor had been asked not to return for an anticipated season three. Producers even allegedly reached out to the likes of Idris Elba and Colin Farrell to replace him. However, per Deadline, all issues have now been settled, and Hardy will be back for season three. Expect season two to debut before the end of 2026.
Another Twisty Mystery?
Finished the latest Harlan Coben show. Are there any more comin’ up?
—S.M., Burnaby
One of the most adapted authors of the past decade, American mystery writer Coben has seen no less than 18 of his potboilers translated from page to screen — the majority of them via Netflix. The most recent, I Will Find You, has been a fixture in the streamer’s Top 10 scroller since its June 18 debut . . . much like predecessors Missing You, The Stranger, Safe and so on. It should come as little surprise, then, that there’s another Coben series on the way. Titled Myron Bolitar, this one centres on the eponymous character — a top athlete who reinvents himself as a sports agent after an injury. The protagonist has appeared in 12 of Coben’s novels, unravelling blackmail, murder and other such plots that plague his clients. Here he’ll be played by Colin Woodell, late of John Wick prequel series The Continental He’s joined by Riverdale alum K.J. Apa and Orange Is the New Black’s Diane Guerrero as Bolitar’s partners Win Lockwood and Esperanza Diaz. Win is a rich kid who walked away from a family fortune to build something of his own; Esperanza is an ex-wrestler who is now Bolitar’s right hand.
Beyond the Coben name, the series also has crime drama legend David E. Kelley (Big Little Lies , The Lincoln Lawyer) taking the reins as showrunner alongside Suits alum Kyle Long

You said [in a previous issue] that Dutton Ranch didn’t have the go-ahead for a season two yet. Any update on this? —R.L., South Surrey
Fortunately, since that issue went to press, streamer Paramount+ has renewed the Yellowstone spinoff for a second ride. Look for it sometime in 2027. Despite the delayed announcement, the renewal felt like a
As one who believes that Sean Connery was the only real James Bond, I have made it a habit to seek out all of Connery’s other work. I recently watched a 1974 movie called Zardoz. That is a real wild one. What was he thinking!?
–G.P., White Rock
Set in the year 2293, this trippy sci-fi mind-bender was written and directed by John Boorman (of Deliverance and Excalibur fame). Shot on location in Ireland, the general premise offers us a world governed by Zardoz — a stone idol that speaks to the population of a ravaged world as a god. The residents of this hellish place are called “The Brutals,” and all they really know how to do is kill.
Connery is a red-loincloth-wearing Brutal named Zed. Like all of his kind, he is unaware that their “god” is a fake — puppeted by a member of an advanced race called “The Eternals.” Zardoz preaches eternal life in a place called “The Vortex” — which Zed infiltrates in pursuit of the truth
foregone conclusion, given that Dutton Ranch was Paramount+’s most-watched original series premiere of all time.
For the uninitiated, the gritty, modern-day western follows Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and her ranch-boss husband Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) as they’re driven out of their Montana homestead by wildfires and start over in Texas, where they soon clash with Beulah Jackson (Annette Bening), matriarch of a local ranching dynasty, and her unpredictable offspring.
If this all sounds a tad incomprehensible, you’re not alone. Even the auteur himself, still alive and in his 90s at this writing, admitted that much of his script was penned under the influence of one kind of drug or anothe — and that even years later when watching his own movie, he did not really understand what was going on.
Booking a star like Sean Connery was a stroke of luck, as the actor — trying to leave 007 in the past following 1971’s Diamonds Are Forever (even though he would later, begrudgingly, return in 1983’s Never Say Never Again) — had difficulty getting work given th he was so closely associated with Bond. As a result, Boorman landed him at the discount rate of just $200,000.
The ninth and final episode of season one capped on quite the cliffhange, as Rip and Beth’s adopted son Carter (Finn Little) was kidnapped by the ruthless drug cartel Beulah brought into their lives.
Successful though it was, that first season was no without a few bumps along the trail, as creator Chad Feehan ultimately exited the show amidst reported clashes with producers and stars Reilly and Hauser. It’s since been announced he’ll be replaced in season two by Benjamin Cavell, whose
previous credits include Justifie and SEAL Team — the latter of which he created.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter postfinal, Reilly — who, along with Hauser, is also an exec producer — mused about just what it is that makes the central duo so compelling in this latest incarnation of the Dutton saga.
“I love Beth and Rip having to care about something,” she said.
“Carter is that. They’re at their best when they’re fighting for somebody els, always.”

Turn & Face the Strange
Of all the myriad big- and small-screen incarnations of Star Trek over the years, arguably none have captured the swashbuckling ethos of the original ’60s series quite so well as Strange New Worlds.
Now, Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) and his crew embark on year four of their fie-year mission. A 10part season four premieres this Thursday with back-to-back new episodes before unrolling the rest weekly. That will be followed by a six-episode final season blasting off sometime in 202.
Paramount’s official seas synopsis oh-so-vaguely teases that “the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise . . . embark on a series of thrilling and emotional adventures across the stars. As they journey to strange new worlds, they will battle inner demons and external threats, encounter colourful new characters, reunite with familiar faces and confront terrifying
aliens. Through it all, they strive to embrace a bright, hopeful future.”
We can report that one of those “familiar faces” will be comedian Patton Oswalt, who returns as Doug, the Vulcan who’s charmingly obsessed with human culture.
But perhaps the most anticipated episode of this forthcoming season will feature the crew of the good ship Enterprise being transformed into puppets . . . puppets that were, no less, crafted by The Jim Henson Company.
“I wanna say there was easily more than six months of work on it,” co-showrunner Henry Alonso Myers told Entertainment Weekly
EXPLOSIVE REVELATIONS
An eight-episode thriller out of France stars Tomer Sisley as David, head of a counter-terrorism unit who is just about to step back from the frontlines when an “invisible enemy” with access to weapons of mass destruction puts his country — and his recently enlisted godson — at risk. Alas, tracking down this foe will also force David to face his own, deeply fraught past.
LOVE & CARNAGE
A whodunit wherein the main character is also the prime suspect, this six-episode U.K. thriller opens on the sudden, baffling disappearance of music teacher Saraholley.
As the press release teases: “Minutes have turned into hours; hours into days. And yet her family have heard nothing. Her car keys are still in the dish by the front door, her mobile phone is still charging under the bed. It’s as if she’s simply walked out on her stable family home . . . Concerned, Sarah’s husband Michael Polly goes to the police. He speaks to Detective Julie Mckenzie. He is determined — insistent — that she finds out what has happened to his wife. Mckenzie promises him she will. But something in her gut tells her he is responsible.”

Season two of this gritty, soapy mash-up of Yellowstone and Virgin River opens to find Quinn Minka Kelly) returning to smalltown Texas after six months in New York, reuniting with studly rancher Staten (Josh Duhamel) — who will be forced to consider what matters more: land or love?
THURSDAY, NETFLIX
Playing Michael — who is not only the victim’s husband, but the headmaster of her elite private school — is Walking Dead alum David Morrissey, while Det. Mckenzie is brought to life by Hijack’s Eve Myles. On that note, the series is penned by George Kay, the man behind both Hijack and Netflix hit Lupin
Speaking at the Monte-Carlo Television Festival (via TV Bizz Magazine), Morrissey delved into his inscrutable protagonist: “One of the things about why we wanted to do the show is about people who give ‘bad victim.’ When something terrible has happened to someone, the public sort of want them to react in a certain way for themselves . . . They want to see someone scream and shout when terrible things have gone on . . . Michael doesn’t do that and that gives a curveball to the investigation, and to us as a public.”
The show premieres with three episodes on Thursday, followed by one per week thereafter.

Stars Brenda Blethyn & Jessica Reynolds parse the timeless resonance of A Woman of Substance
Q Barbara Taylor Bradford’s novel is still one of the bestselling books of all time. The previous miniseries adaptation in the ’80s was also a massive hit. Just what is it about the story of Emma Harte that captured the zeitgeist — that strikes readers and viewers so profoundly?
A Woman of Substance

from the depths of poverty to one of the richest people in the world. And, much as she was always ambitious, she’s largely driven by a burning desire to even the score for what this wealthy family did to her. But that’s a double-edged sword. What, ultimately, is the story’s take on revenge?
A BRENDA: I suppose it’s the story of this young working-class girl who achieves the world, against all the odds. It would be inspiring to any young person who thinks their chances of succeeding in life are hopeless. It might give them a little inspiration to kind of get there. It is possible.
It’s quite remarkable, her journey — to achieve that success in a man’s world. It’s still not an even playing field, is i? It’s still quite often difficultor women. It’s harder for women to achieve the same degree as men — I think that’s what it is.
And [the show is] sumptuous. It’s sexy, romantic, dramatic. It’s beautiful scenery, beautiful costumes. Everything about it. It ticks all the boxes. I think that’s why it’s so successful.
Q Obviously, over the course of this narrative — with the two of you playing her at different points in life — Emma goes
AJESSICA: Yeah, what is the cost of success?
Emma is a super-ambitious individual . . . but we need to think about the trauma that she goes through as a young woman. She’s from a background of poverty. Her running away from where she comes from and trying to become this wealthy business mogul isn’t just out of ambition and pride. It’s out of complete survival. She’s running away from so much of where she came from, because it was so difficult and so aumatic.
I think if you’re striving for something, it’s brilliant — if you’re running away from something, then that’s when the issues will rear their head.
Revenge is just something for her to cling onto. It’s a vehicle for her to run away from the pain of what she felt from being let down and betrayed by people. You can hold onto revenge and see how far it takes you — but you might end up still with a lot of pain at the end of the day.

n 2025, after a 15-year hiatus, creators Mike Judge and Greg Daniels brought Texas propane man Hank Hill and his eclectic array of friends and fam back into the zeitgeist — once again offering up a low-key yet incisive satire of life in America.
Moving from broadcaster Fox to streamer Disney+ for the revival, season 14 found Hank and Peggy returning to smalltown Arlen, Texas, after having spent the intervening years working for an oil company in Saudi Arabia.
It was a bumpy readjustment, to say the least — reconnecting with old pals Dale, Bill, Boomhauer and, of course, allgrown-up son Bobby in a United States that was more divided
and volatile than the one they left over a decade ago. It’s a premise that offered Judge, Daniels and their team a perfect lens through which to examine and dissect the social, cultural and political ills of their country and the world.
As U.K. outlet the Guardian summed up in its review of that fist revamped season: “Hank, Peggy and the gang are back in a changed America. It’s nuanced, subtly political, poignant TV — and there’s never been a better
time for its focus on tolerance.”
In season 15, per Disney+’s release: “Hank and Peggy settle into retirement life on Rainey Street while attempting to keep their neighbours from going off the ails.” At the same time, “Bobby navigates old friendships while dealing with the stresses of being an entrepreneur.”
All 10 episodes of this new instalment debut Monday. And there’s plenty more where that came from, as the show has already been renewed for at least two more seasons.

The Dink
Having seen exceptional returns on its investment in sports comedies like Ted Lasso and Stick, Apple TV presents us with another — this one set in the world of tennis. A film ather than a series, The Dink stars New Girl alum Jake Johnson as Dusty Boyd, a has-been tennis pro who, in order to save his father’s flailing club, agrees to demean himself by . . . shudder playing pickleball.
The supporting cast is, undeniably, of the A-list variety — including Ed Harris, Mary Steenburgen, Patton Oswalt, Chris Parnell and Ben Stiller, the latter of whom is also a producer on the movie.
And while the sport itself is never really the point of a sports pic, everyone involved was determined to do the oft-maligned game of pickleball justice onscreen.
As Johnson said in an interview with Pickleball.com: “I read the script, and I’d never played pickleball. I didn’t give it much thought . . . The game just started getting more and more fun, and the appreciation of the game really came into training for the movie and understanding that they were going to ask me to do a lot on-camera, and it wasn’t just going to be goofing aound. The professionals who were our consultants on the movie really cared about the pickleball stuff looking good, and it meant a lot to them. These men and women make their money doing this. These are professionals. They care, and they wanted to represent the sport. Our director, Josh Greenbaum [Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar] wanted to make it a real sports movie, so the pickleball is represented. We shot the hell out of the pickleball stuff, and it looks good.”

Back for a third season, this unique docuseries continues to take pro-wrestling fans deep behind the scenes of the WWE’s creative process. Viewers go inside the writers’ room as they tackle John Cena’s WWE farewell, the surprise return of a fan-favourite star and Wrestlemania 42.
When a newlywed began receiving threatening emails from a mysterious sender who called themselves “Lilithistruth,” all signs pointed to one person. But after that suspect, her husband’s ex, was arrested, it kicked up a scandal in their wellto-do California suburb. However, as this true-crime doc makes clear, the case was far from closed — and, even more disturbing, was that as the investigation progressed, it became increasingly unclear who was the true victim and who was the villain.

YOUR WEEKLY SCOOP ON NEW TV PROJECTS IN THE WORKS
HE’S
BEEN A LATE-NIGHT
second banana for more than two decades, but this summer fans will see a whole new side of Jimmy Kimmel Live! sidekick Guillermo Rodriguez. Rodriguez, who unveiled his own brand of salsa (Guillermo’s Salsa) earlier this year, has been tapped to be one of the celebrity contestants in the upcoming 35th season of Dancing With the Stars when the long-running hit returns to ABC and Disney+ this fall. That’s right, he won’t just be selling salsa, he’ll also be dancing salsa!
Tango in the Night
He’ll be joining a roster of previously announced participants including Maura Higgins of The Traitors and Love Island fame, Summer House’s Ciara Miller and Savannah Bananas second baseman Jackson Olson.
The full roster of celebrities and their pro dance partners will be announced Wednesday, September 2, on ABC’s Good Morning America.
A Jimmy Kimmel Live! fixtue since the late-night talk show launched in 2003, Rodriguez started out as a parking lot security guard before becoming a regular part of the late-night
shenanigans, often showcased in his own segments or conducting red-carpet interviews. That history led host Jimmy Kimmel to quip that “Guillermo will become the fist-ever parking security guard to dance with the stars.”
Already, Rodriguez faces stiff competition from some of his fellow participants as they all compete for the Len Goodman Mirrorball Trophy, last won by Season 34’s Robert Irwin (I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here!) and his partner, pro dancer Witney Carson
Back in May, Miller told E! host Erin Lim Rhodes that she was getting ready by making a to-do list of preparations, and that she’d already “gotten my butt in the gym because I gotta build my stamina.”
At the opposite end of the spectrum is Higgins, who told E! News that she wasn’t prepping because “if I try and go into dancing, maybe I’m gonna pick up stuff tht they have to unteach me, like bad habits.” Her Traitors co-star Mark Ballas seemingly approved of Higgins’ mindset, advising her to “be open-minded, have fun, be a blank slate person.”
Jimmy Kimmel Live! sidekick Guillermo Rodriguez will be tripping the light fantastic on Dancing With the Stars
SUPERNATURAL SHUTTERBUG
While this year marks the 20th anniversary of High School Musical, lead actor Zac Efron is more focused on what lies ahead than on what he’s already accomplished. That’s clear from his upcoming project, in which Efron recently partnered with HBO and A24 on a new series written and executive produced by Black Rabbit creator Zach Baylin. Titled Angel Heart, the one-hour drama is based on William Hjortsberg’s 1978 novel Falling Angel and his sequel, Angel’s Inferno
“A down-and-out NYC paparazzi, who makes his living finding and photographing people who don’t want to be found, is hired by a mysterious man to find a missing woman” reads the logline for the intriguing series. “But the deeper he digs to find he, the more it looks like a group of powerful elites, and maybe something supernatural, are covering up the disappearance.”
Efron is attached as both star and executive producer. Meanwhile, it’s also worth noting that
NEW SERIES FOR STRANGER THINGS STAR
he last collaborated with A24 on 2023’s The Iron Claw, in which he portrayed troubled 1980s wrestler Kevin Von Erich alongside Jeremy Allen White (The Bear), who played his brother Kerry
Jonathan van Tulleken (Shōgun) will reportedly join Efron as one of the project’s executive producers. In addition, van Tulleken is also expected to direct several episodes.
This is the second time that Hjortsberg’s novel has been adapted for the screen — and the first time it’s forming the basis of a TV series.
The first was the 1987 fil Angel Heart, which was directed by Alan Parker (Evita) and starred Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler), Robert De Niro (Taxi Driver) and Lisa Bonet (High Fidelity).
After being embroiled in a ratings controversy, the film received mied reviews upon its release. In the years that have passed, however, Angel Heart has gone on to become a cult classic — and now the story seems poised for rediscovery by modern audiences.
Sadie Sink has been making headlines for her mysterious role in this summer’s new Marvel blockbuster, Spider-Man: Brand New Day
However, the news for TV viewers is that Sink — whose portrayal of Max Mayfield in the Netflix hi Stranger Things made her a fan favourite — recently signed on as star and executive producer of a new TV series coming (at some point) to FX.
A limited series, The Marriage Plot is based on Jeffrey Eugenide ’ 2011 novel, which is being adapted for the screen by Will Arbery (Succession), with Hiro Murai (Atlanta) attached to direct.
The series follows “three recent college graduates caught in an
all-consuming love triangle as they reconcile their youthful romantic aspirations with looming adulthood and make life-altering choices about love and identity,” according to the logline for the forthcoming new TV series.
“The Marriage Plot is a perfect fit for FX: ambitious, character-driven storytelling that offers another great opportunity to partner with exceptional artists,” Gina Balian, president of FX Entertainment, said in a statement. “We look forward to building on our partnerships with Will and Hiro, both of whom are extraordinary talents who we are proud to work with again.”
There’s no word yet on which character Sink will play.
Place a number in the empty boxes in such a way that each row across, each column down and each small 9-box square contains all of the numbers from one to nine.
The idea of Go Figure is to arrive at the fi gures given at the bottom and right-hand columns of the diagram by following the arithmetic signs in the order the are given (that is, from left to right and top to bottom). Use only the numbers below the diagram to complete its blank squares and use each of the nine numbers only once.

ON THE CASE
IColin Farrell returns as a Los Angeles PI with a big secret in the second season of neo-noir thriller Sugar
N THE FIRST SEASON OF SUGAR, the neo-noir mystery drama really threw its viewers for a loop. (If you have not seen the fist season, and intend to catch up without spoilers, then stop reading now).
Towards the end, the show revealed the truth about its protagonist: John Sugar, the private detective roaming Los Angeles in search of his missing sister, was in fact an extraterrestrial. However you felt about this revelation, and the fact that series creator
and showrunner Sam Catlin decided to drop this bombshell very late in the game, the second season does not dwell on Sugar’s origins much more than the fist season did. “The reveal isn’t really the hook,” says executive producer Audrey Chon. “It’s really just looking at this character who has a different perspective.” In fact, think of John Sugar’s origins as more of a flvour than the focus. “We were relieved that the audience finally as in on the secret and we could start telling the story of Sugar as who he really is,” says Catlin. “We assume the audience now knows and we can lean into the story of Sugar solving another mystery in Los Angeles, which we felt was the heart of the show.”
For Catlin and Chon, the reveal was an opportunity to reboot the show — or at least approach season two from a slightly different angle. “It’s a whole new cast of characters, plus, in a way, Sugar’s a new character to the audience because the big mystery has been explained,” he says. “Now the audience has a totally new relationship to the main character, which we
thought was a really fun way to start a second season.” And, true to its structure, this show will drop another huge reveal towards the end of season two, which involves Mireille Enos as guest star. “She’s a very significant character that we won’t see until the end of the season,” says Catlin. “It’s somebody Sugar will have a very complicated reaction to.”
But at the start of the season, as his buddies have departed for the planet they came from, Sugar has decided to remain in Los Angeles where he is investigating the disappearance of a young boxer who has fallen on hard times. “It’s about two brothers that are immigrants from Korea and they’ve come to America to make their way,” explains Catlin. “They’re all they have, which is a mirror of Sugar’s relationship with his sister. When one of the brothers goes missing, the more Sugar looks into this case, the more it starts to unravel deeper corruption and rot. By the end, in Sugar’s point of view, it’s an example of humanity’s darkness.

FRIDAY, APPLE TV
Outlander alum Laura Donnelly plays Charlotte, a mysterious addition to the second season of Sugar.
Sugar sees how tough human beings can be on each other.”
To make a hard situation even stickier, Sugar’s attention is drawn to an enigmatic woman staying at the hotel he has made his home. Outlander’s Laura Donnelly joins the cast as Charlotte, a solitary individual who becomes another mystery for Sugar to solve. “We wanted someone that could match wits and presence with Colin Farrell and that’s exactly what we got,” says Catlin. “For people who don’t know who this actor is — and I think a lot of people do now — but if you don’t, she’s fantastic.” Sugar can’t help but agree that Donnelly’s is a presence that cannot be ignored. “The way she carries herself, the way she holds her pen, the way she articulates her words, her
very essence is something that throws him off fom the get-go,” says Farrell. “Romantic love is something that has never, in all the years that he’s been on Planet Earth, been on his radar. And, just as human beings are from time to time, he’s undeniably magnetized by what he feels when he’s around her.”
As anyone with a knowledge of noir films knws, a femme fatale is not to be trusted. But is Charlotte the stereotypical noir siren? “There is always that element, that tone that they’re bringing in — or at least a big question mark over it,” teases Donnelly. “I love that this show plays with those traditions within that genre. And at the same time, it also is a show that steps very far away from this genre when it chooses to.”
Where Donnelly and Farrell have full trust in each other is behind the scenes. “Oh, it’s just bliss,” says Donnelly. “He knows that character so well, and being exec producer, he’s been part of all of the conversations that happen from the very beginning of the script being written up to the days that you’re shooting, so he inhabits it so well. He may just play

around with the scene a bit and I very much allowed myself to be led by that, because this is his show and he knows this world better than any of us.”
However much the writers have chosen to adapt the genre, true noir is something that is beloved by those in charge of the series. “I grew up watching noir that was an homage to the original noir,” says Catlin. “So, Los Angeles, to me, has always been the home of noir. And L.A. is the perfect location for it just because it has this veneer, this very attractive shell, which is fun to live in and play in, but the more you ask questions, the more you see it’s not quite as pretty. It’s the perfect environment for noir because of the duality of sunshine and darkness.” Catlin has found that there is also a new relevance to the noir genre. “More and more it seems that there is something we’re not being told, something that’s being withheld, backroom deals and conspiracies,” says Catlin. “It’s obviously in the culture right now and that theme is just as relevant if not more relevant than ever.”

The city of Los Angeles is almost a character unto itself in the second season of Sugar.
T WAS MORE THAN 30 YEARS AGO, way back in 1995, that Pixar fist introduced the world to Woody the cowboy, planet-hopping Buzz Lightyear and the rest of the toys belonging to a kid named Andy. Since then fans of the Toy Story franchise have continued to show up for sequels, raking in a combined US$3.5 billion (and counting) at the box office.
With the recent release of Toy Story 5, Woody (voiced as always by Tom Hanks), Buzz (Tim Allen) and cowgirl Jessie (Joan Cusack) face a new threat in Lilypad (The Morning Show’s Greta Lee), a smart tablet that threatens to make the old-school toys obsolete.
Toy Story 5 is co-directed and written by McKenna Harris and Andrew Stanton, with the latter having served as a Toy Story writer since the fist film. ccording to Harris, Stanton’s fist draft for Toy Story 5 “already had Lilypad kind of envisioned as an antagonist. He wanted Jessie to be running the room now that she had had the sheriff bdge passed to her. And then he really wanted to see 50 Buzzes going rogue in the fil and washing ashore in the beginning on a beach, which all of us were like, ‘Tell us again about that. What do you mean by that?’ And he was like, ‘Just go with it. Just go with it.’ But the fi st draft, just those concepts alone felt so exciting and strong, especially for a lot of us. We were like, oh my gosh, Jessie being the protagonist feels like a nobrainer. And the rest is history.”
Harris has had a lifelong connection with Toy Story; a fan since childhood, Toy Story 2 — which introduced Jessie was the fist film Harris sw a film in a thetre. “And so I’ve always loved Jessie, and I’ve always been a drawer. So I would draw her constantly,” Harris recalled. “And so when Andrew fist kind of asked if I wanted to join as co-director, there was like the briefest moment of like, ‘Ooh, that’s intimidating.’ He’s only, like, the guy of my childhood who wrote all these stories. And then I went, ‘Wait, is he asking me to write Jessie fan fiction with hi? Then I’m the perfect choice!’ And so I immediately kind of fell into it with a lot of joy.”
Pixar chief creative officer Pete Docter — who directed the fist
film in the fanchise — explains that the creation of a Toy Story movie is a lengthy and constantly evolving methodology. “We have a process that allows us to get it wrong many, many times,” says Docter. “And so we take our fist pass. In fact, I think Andrew is pretty blatantly like, ‘I’m not worried about the other characters.’ I know I remember him saying this in one of the fist or second screenings, like, ‘These other characters have to be balanced. I’m just focused on the through-line of the main character. We can get to all that.’ So it really — the old adage that writing is rewriting is definitely riht on in our case.”
Toy Story 5
IN THEATRES NOW
In fact, the sheer number of characters in the franchise that needed to be serviced, while introducing new ones and focusing on the main storyline, presented an ongoing obstacle for the filmmaers. “Practically each day, it still just ended up being a challenge,” admits Harris. “And I feel like the ways we
Lilypad (voiced by Greta Lee) presents a new challenge.
Toy Story 5 introduces Smarty Pants, a new toy voiced by Conan O’Brien.
accomplished it really varied. Like, sometimes it was a roll of the dice of like, ‘All right, who hasn’t spoken in fie minutes? Let’s give Dolly a line.’ And so there was kind of truly, at times, a mad scramble. But also just this organic realization of what characters are really thriving and suddenly, you know, Smarty Pants isn’t something that we’re trying to pitch and, like, convince others that they want to see him onscreen. It’s like, no, he’s stealing scenes. We want to see more from him. And so, yes, we do need to sacrifie. We do need to see less of certain characters that we love. But we have a newfound confidene that our audience is really going to enjoy these new characters that we’re making room for. But, yeah, it was never easy. It’s a lot of mouths to feed when it comes to characters in a Toy Story production.”
When it came to casting the aforementioned Smarty Pants — a toy designed to help kids with potty training — producer Lindsey Collins credits Harris with the “ephipany” of enlisting a former late-night host as the new character’s voice. “Kenna, I will absolutely credit for kind of coming up with Conan O’Brien for Smarty Pants,” Collins says. “That was all Kenna being like, ‘Wait a minute. I have the perfect choice.’”
Of course, Collins also admits there’s very little arm-twisting required when seeking out A-list talent to join the franchise. “Being part of Toy Story actually is a thing that people are excited about,” she says.
Digital animation has become significantly moe sophisticated since 1995, and while Toy Story 5 may be more impressive than its predecessors on that front, Docter sees that as an enhancement, not the main attraction.
“The technology is going to wow you for about three seconds. After that, it’s got to bring it in terms of what it’s saying. It ’s got to have some emotional thing and a connection that the audience recognizes as real in the performance.”
“The animators now have so much polish. I mean, they’re so good,” he says. “If you go back and look at the animation in Toy Story 1, it’s sort of like clunky and lacks weight. But the performance is the same. I think that’s the consistent thing that we’re always focused on . . . The technology is going to wow you for about three seconds. After that, it’s got to bring it in terms of what it’s saying. It’s got to have some emotional thing and a connection that the audience recognizes as real in the performance. That’s what I think the animators at Pixar are second to nobody in their ability to just dive into a character and make them feel alive.”
While the technology may have evolved over the course of three decades and fie films, Docter is insistent tht the underlying philosophy that made the fist film so successful remain in place.
“From the beginning, we know our job is to entertain people,” he says. “We’re not just doing this to work out our own inner demons or, you know, have fun for ourselves. We want to make sure that everybody is engaged, involved and looking for those things that we really think will speak widely to everybody.”
Jessie (voiced by Joan Cusack) is the focus of the fift Toy Story feature.
SUMMERTIME SOULMATES
Carley
Fortune’s romantic bestseller comes to TV in Every Year After
IF THE ROMANCE DRAMA Off Campu has left viewers aching for more unrequited love, Every Year After provides all the yearning a romantic could hope for. “I love yearning,” says Amy B. Harris, showrunner of the series adaptation of Carley Fortune’s romance novel, Every Summer After. “This is the year of yearning. That is what people are longing for — to jump into a show and yearn for people and yearn for themselves to want those things. I wanted to tell a story that came with that as its core.”
Percy (Sadie Soverall) and Sam (Matt Cornett) in a scene from Every Year After.
Every Year After PRIME VIDEO
SOULMATES
The series follows two timelines, one in which teenager Persephone “Percy” Fraser (Sadie Soverall) falls for Sam Florek (Matt Cornett) in the Ontario lake town of Barry’s Bay. When we meet Percy in her 20s, returning to town for the funeral of the Florek brothers’ mother Sue (Elisha Cuthbert), we discover that the two didn’t make it as a couple. However, true love has a tendency of bubbling up to the surface, and Sam and Percy can’t escape the feelings they have for each other — and nor can they ignore the mistakes of their past.
It was the notion of depicting a romance in two time periods,
10 years apart, that drew Harris to Fortune’s source material. “The idea that we’re following these two people’s yearning from friends to lovers in two different timelines, I thought was so beautiful,” she says. “When I was reading the book, I knew immediately that in series we can roll those two things together. We can keep that yearning going because we know there’s romance coming in the past.”
Another aspect that attracted Harris to the show’s potential — and what Fortune believes connected readers to the story — was its charming setting. “I think it’s being transported to the lake in Barry’s Bay for the summer, feeling a sense of nostalgia for summers that you may or may not have experienced,” says Fortune. “And I think people became emotionally invested with Percy and Sam’s story, because we all want somebody to notice us and see us, as a teenager. I know that I did. I wanted to give Percy what I didn’t have. We just want that moment of being held by somebody.”
Casting actors to embody characters that are already beloved by readers is no easy feat. For Fortune and Harris, finding overall and Cornett felt a bit like winning the lottery. “Percy and Sam are very smart. They’re a bit messy in terms of how they live in the world, but they’re very thoughtful,” says Harris.
Blue Clarke plays the younger version of Sam, while Juliette Hawk is teenage Percy.
Sadie Soverall stars as Percy Fraser, whose teenage summer in an Ontario resort town plays a pivotal role in her future a decade later.
“When I saw Sadie’s fist read, and we did a half-hour on Zoom together, she’s just an incredibly thoughtful, complex person. I just thought, ‘This is Percy.’ I knew it from minute one. And she weirdly looks like the description in the book, which happened to be like the icing on the cake. And Matt brought this deep kindness and stability and smarts. Their energy together was so similar to the book’s descriptions.”
The romance in the book is only part of the relationship dynamics that play out in Barry’s Bay. Cuthbert plays a character that only exists in the earlier timeline but was pulled in by the impact Sam and Charlie’s mother Sue had on the entire

storyline. “She’s so involved in all of these characters and their journey,” Cuthbert says. “I was fascinated with the idea of being a part of it in a way where all her moments, with each character in flashbck or in memory, are so pivotal and important. Every scene felt really special.”
What is obvious from the beginning is that Sue is an advocate for the romance that is budding between Sam and Percy in their teenage years. “It probably brings her back to what it was like for her to fall in love for the fist time,” says Cuthbert. “I think anyone watching the show, and seeing their relationship evolve, will relate.” But there is also another relationship developing that has little to do with her son. “She meets Percy and they end up developing this motherdaughter relationship that they’re both yearning for,” says Cuthbert. “Sue being the boy mom that she is, really getting that fist experience

with a daughter-type, is exciting for her. And Percy wanting a mom-figue that is light, joyful, and full of love and support is great.”
Other key relationships in the fist season of what Harris hopes will lead to more, are those between siblings and friends. “I love the brotherly bond between Sam and Charlie,” says Michael Bradway, who plays Sam’s brother. “I don’t have a brother, so it was really fun to explore that aspect of the show for me.” Aurora Perrineau and Joseph Chiu play friends of Percy and Sam, respectively, who are not necessarily fans of the two rekindling their romance. “I think Chantal just wants Percy to be happy,” says Perrineau. “He’s a bit far away from [Chantal], but she’s going to support Percy in anything she wants to do. And I think Chantal is inspired by how Percy pursues the things that she loves.” Chiu’s character, however, is far from convinced that them being together is a happily ever after. “Jordie said Percy is the devil,” says Chiu. “He has seen Sam at his lowest, and as his best friend, he’s heard all the bad things. He knows that, for Sam, Percy’s the one and he has to support it, but until they get married and settle down, I don’t think Jordie’s going to believe Sam.”
Both the book and its TV adaptation — which makes a change to a relationship-defining moment that has roused ire in those who feel protective about the source material — is likely to raise strong opinions. As the creator of the occasional rupture between Percy and Sam, Fortune welcomes all the feels. “I know there are readers who threw their books across the room and there’s a lot of crying,” she says. “I think if I can provoke a physical reaction in someone when they’re reading, that means I’ve done my job.”

A LAST WORD THE
Q A little while back, Jon Hamm appeared, over video chat, during a segment of Amy Poehler’s podcast. He was behind the scenes on a film shoot, wearing a white tuxedo and climbing into a hot air balloon. I think most viewers were like, “Just what is he filmin?” It’s nice to finally have an answer . .
A ZOEY: What is interesting about your story is that now I finally knw what he was doing on the phone, while we were in the hot air balloon. Because I didn’t, and I was a little perplexed because we were in close quarters and he was on the phone, and I was like, “I wonder who this could be.” And it turns out it was Amy Poehler — which I get.
Q David, there’s a distinctly absurdist, almost vaudevillian tone that your films tend to inhabit. How would you unpack your comedic sensibility?
A DAVID: It’s hard to do that. I don’t feel like I’m in a very good place to dissect it — and I certainly don’t do it when I’m creating the work; I’m not trying to put labels
Zoey Deutch & David Wain
on it, or guardrails. When I’m writing with Ken Marino, we’re just basically trying to write what we find funy and what makes sense in our brains — and let others put a definition on tht voice. But I recognize that there’s a certain consistency, which I like . . . words like “absurdist,” and there’s antecedents and there’s a genre that it fits int.
But I’ve seen some critics write up things that define it better than I ould.
Q Zoey, is it an interesting experience, having starred in rom-coms that “play it straight,” to now do a project like this which sort of deconstructs the genre and stitches it back together with an absurdist bent?
A ZOEY: Yeah, I love it. I mean, this is the kind of movie that I love to watch — and
We take this very silly idea and then turn it into this epic journey/quest across this whimsical version of L.A. — almost like Wizard of Oz, in a way.”
I’m probably more familiar with than rom-coms. It also explores all different genres’ tropes in a way that I find hilarious.
DAVID: I remember when we were doing our movie They Came Together, which is a very specific tear-down of the rom-com genre, and Paul Rudd was like, “I’ve starred in a lot of these — like, the real version of this. I don’t know if I can ever do it again” . . . It turns out, he’s fin.
Q
Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass IN THEATRES NOW
David, you’ve worked with both Jon Hamm and John Slattery before. How did you pitch Jon and John on this one?
A DAVID: We wrote the script with the hopes that they would do it . . . but didn’t wanna present it until we had a finished script. And so, I actually called Jon Hamm and I said, “This is a little weird, but we have this movie.” And at the time the title was I’ll Take the Hamm. “Essentially, you’re you, as you, as a character in it . . . and really hope you might be interested in doing it!” The same thing with John Slattery. Then, after that sort of scary conversation, it was very simple sending it over and both of them saying, “Yeah, I’m in.” It was pretty cool.
Q Your frequent collaborator Joe Lo Truglio plays a gangster in Gail Daughtry. He’s most famous as Det. Boyle on Brooklyn Nine-Nine. And there’s a scene in this film where a random person on the street recognizes him while you’re shooting and says, “Charles Boyle!” And you didn’t cut it. How
freeing is it to have the kind of flxible film reality where you don’t have to axe that scene?
A Yeah. The only rule is “Does it feel right to us? Does it feel funny?” I mean, one of my favourite moments in anything is in our movie
The Ten, where a character is saying a line, f***s it up, gets frustrated with himself, and then starts over and says it again. And we just left it in. [Laughs]
Q Zoey, not to say that you went full Method on this and just lived that Gail Daughtry life 24/7 . . . but what is it like inhabiting the mindset of a character in this skewed, absurdist world?
A DAVID: She would not let us call her “Zoey” on set . . .|
ZOEY: I still am going by “Gail.” Until the movie comes out, I’m Gail. No, I don’t know . . . she’s very optimistic and lovely, and it was a really fun character to get to play. There’s a lot of absurd things that are happening around me, but I’m, for all intents and purposes, the straight man of the movie — so, I just tried to play it as straight [as possible].
DAVID: I just think one of the hardest things probably for you and for the crew was that Gail the character is a half an inch shorter than you are in real life. So, that involved a lot of camera trickery and costume stuff, and then of course just a different mindset on your part . . .
CURRENT GIG
Cult comedy legend David Wain helms another flick thats absurd, edgy and sweet all at once. It’s the tale of Gail Daughtry (Zoey Deutch), a Kansas hairdresser about to marry her high school sweetheart Tom (Michael Cassidy). Alas, when Jennifer Aniston comes to town for a book signing and Tom cashes in his “celebrity sex pass,” Gail heads for Hollywood to find and bed her own celeb crush Jon Hamm. Aiding her are an array of unlikely companions . . . including Hamm’s old Mad Men co-star, John Slattery.
Q On the topic of height-related camera trickery, that’s what they did on Lord of the Rings, for the hobbits . . . and weirdly, this film also has a sort of quest narrative at its core.
A DAVID: Yeah, we take this very silly idea and then turn it into this epic journey/quest across this whimsical version of L.A. — almost like Wizard of Oz, in a way.
Q This very much has the feel of a run-and-gun production. What was the shooting schedule?
A ZOEY: We shot it in 21 days. Very quick shoot. And we were fortunate enough to get to shoot it here in Los Angeles, which is my hometown. I’m very L.A. proud, and I am desperate, alongside many others, to bring film back to L.A., for a lot of different reasons. Getting to make this little movie here was really very special to me.
DAVID: It’s incredible that, when we fist were putting it together, even though it literally all takes place in iconic L.A. places, the fist question [from financies] is, “OK, so where other than L.A. should we shoot this? Anywhere but L.A.” ZOEY: That’s always what the fist piece of the puzzle is: “Where are we shooting this? Because we can’t shoot it in
MEMORABLE ROLES
The daughter of Back to the Future star Lea Thompson and Pretty in Pink director Howard Deutch, Zoey Deutch has been making her own mark on Hollywood over the past decade, showing impressive range with roles across such films as Netflix hit Set It Up and Voicemails for Isabelle, Clint Eastwood’s courtroom thriller Juror #2, horror comedy Zombieland: Double Tap, and Texas auteur Richard Linklater’s Everybody Wants Some!! and Nouvelle Vague. Director David Wain, meanwhile, got his start with ’90s sketch troupe The State on MTV, alongside pals Joe Lo Truglio (who co-stars in Gail Daughtry) and Ken Marino (who co-wrote and co-stars in Gail Daughtry). Beyond Gail, he’s helmed such pics as Wet Hot American Summer, Role Models, They Came Together and TV’s Childrens Hospital.
L.A. [for financial easons].”
DAVID: That’s a conversation I hope to invert from now on.
Q When you’re doing an absurdist piece, does the key to pulling it off lay in not “winking” not acknowledging the absurdity?
A DAVID: Yeah, that goes back to how they brilliantly did that in Airplane!. The more absurd the situation, the more you just have everyone and everything play it as real as you possibly can . . . which makes it all the funnier.
Q After hearing about the legendary “whip curl” hairstyle throughout the film, Gail finally dons the ’do at her wedding Zoey, when you saw yourself in the mirror, did you think, “Hey, maybe this is my thing now?”
A ZOEY: Absolutely. It’s a stunning hairdo that I can’t wait to see take over the world. It’s bound to happen. [Laughs]
DAVID: One of our producers was convinced on set . . . He’s just like, “People are gonna start really [doing this].”
Q As much as you don’t need to ascribe a “meaning” to a wacky endeavour like this, beneath all the antics, this really feels like a story about friendship, about people being there for each other . . .
A DAVID: I one hundred per cent agree. And by the way, I feel like all movies that are real and personal like ours is, and made by a cohesive group of people that are like-minded, the meaning is there no matter what — because the themes and things we think about bubble up through the jokes and the comedy and the story. And so, yes, friendship and going for what you believe in and being there for each other . . . there’s a lot of themes. And there’s themes about fame and celebrity. There’s a lot that’s said under the surface, but it was not the primary driver of why we made the movie — which I think is good.
The powerhouse of energy and life-long vibrancy
What are mitochondria, and how do we spark them?
They are like very tiny powerplants that produce energy in every living cell of our bodies. On average, every cell has 1,500 mitochondria. Can you imagine that for their extremely small size, it’s been said that they produce, gram for gram, 10,000–50,000 times more energy than the sun?
To say that mitochondria are important to human health is grossly understating their role in our
survival. We literally would not be alive without them. They convert our food into energy, so that every other function of our body can occur as it needs to. As we age, our ability to create healthy mitochondria to support our energy demands diminishes. And because about 90% of our cellular energy is produced by mitochondria, this decline can cause significant health issues
