WHAT’S ON THIS WEEK!
LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE
More than 50 years ago, viewers embraced Michael Landon’s wholesome and heartwarming television adaptation of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s beloved semiautobiographical Little House on the Prairie books. Now, Netflix is returning to the original source material with a fresh spin. TV Week speaks with showrunner Rebecca Sonnenshine and stars Luke Bracey, Crosby Fitzgerald, Alice Halsey and Skywalker Hughes.
HOUSE OF THE DRAGON
The fire-breathing behemoths take to the air as the Targaryen family feud erupts into all-out civil war in the highly anticipated third season of the Game of Thrones prequel series.
NATION’S DUMBEST
British comedian Jack Whitehall hosts an outrageous new game show that challenges a gaggle of celebrities to demonstrate their knowledge, with the smartest of them eliminated until only the stupidest remain.
EDITOR’S NOTE
WHO’S THE DUMBEST OF THEM ALL?
For six decades and counting, Jeopardy! has been the gold standard of TV trivia competitions, testing brainy contestants’ smarts about a sprawling array of general knowledge. This week, however, sees the launch of a new game show that essentially takes the format and flips it upside dwn by focusing not on the smartest people, but the stupidest.
Hosted by British comedian Jack Whitehall, Nation’s Dumbest is a celebrity-driven competition that essentially sends these personalities to summer school, where they’ll face a mix of brain-teasing tasks, fast-paced physical challenges and long-buried classroom knowledge.
Per the network, Whitehall “presides over the chaos as contestants relive the highs and humiliations of school life — from pop quizzes and report cards to recess and parent-teacher conferences — all while trying to stay out of last place.”
Each week, the “smartest” celebs graduate while the “dumbest” remain, with a high-stakes final xam determining who will be left standing at the end of the season to receive the dubious distinction of the nation’s dumbest celebrity.
Enrollees in the debut season are: reality TV star Hilaria Baldwin; former Baywatch star Carmen Electra; actor Anthony Michael Hall; Napoleon Dynamite’s Jon Heder; musician/actor Chase Hudson; rapper/ SVU star Ice-T; singer-songwriter Elle King; ex-NFL quarterback Matt Leinart; former Celebrity Rehab host (and actual physician) Dr. Drew Pinsky; Jackass regular-turned-standup comic Steve-O; pop singer JoJo Siwa; and one-time presidential candidate Andrew Yang.
Nation’s Dumbest
WEDNESDAY, 9 P.M., FOX
Produced by BBC Studios, the show is based on a hit series from Norway. “I can confidently sy we have the absolute dumbest television format in the world — and for once, that’s by design,” said BBC Studios’ Ryan O’Dowd. “Nation’s Dumbest celebrates humour, humility and the universal experience of not always getting it right. With Jack Whitehall leading the chaos and a cast fully in on the joke, it’s a bold, irreverent series packed with big laughs and real surprises.”

MADDEN BACK IN ACTION?
Watching Richard Madden in that Prime spy show [Citadel] got me wondering if there might be more Bodyguard in his future?
—S.N., Vancouver
The 2018 limited series that landed Madden a Golden Globe for his turn as conflicted .K. police sergeant David Budd was such a smash that there were indeed whispers of a follow-up. Alas, it never came to fruition — but Madden will soon reteam with Bodyguard writer Jed Mercurio for another thriller, coming to Netflix in late 2026/early 202. Trinity will follow a naval officer The Morning Show’s Gugu Mbatha-Raw) who gets into a fraught romance with the secretary of defence (Madden), only to realize he may be at the heart of a conspiracy. Oscar winner Marcia Gay Harden co-stars as the nefarious CEO of the piece.
Stranger Things Reunion?
I’d heard there was a falling out between the actors who play Hopper [David Harbour] and Eleven [Millie Bobby Brown] on Stranger Things. Any details?
—W.N., Abbotsford
Ahead of the Netflix hits fifth and final season, a report emerged from the Daily Mail that Millie Bobby Brown had filed an HR complaint against her onscreen surrogate dad David Harbour for alleged “bullying.” Luckily, since then, both parties have claimed they were ultimately able to talk through their issues.
For proof of that, look no further than the fact that they’ve just signed on to headline a new project together back at Netflix. In the yet-untitled spy series, “disgraced FBI agent turned security expert Matt Wolfe (Harbour) is drawn back into the world he left behind when his estranged daughter, Rebecca (Brown) — now an FBI agent determined to follow in his footsteps — vanishes on a mission, forcing him to return to a field that has evolved beyond him.” The show will be penned by Adolescence co-creator Jack Thorne
Said Jinny Howe, Netflixs head of scripted series: “Jack Thorne’s ability to find the deeply human story inside a thriller is unmatched, and watching Millie Bobby Brown and David Harbour reunite — this time as estranged father and daughter on opposite sides of a crisis — is something audiences are going to love.”

As previously reported, S.W.A.T. Exiles has had an unusual trajectory to the screen, with studio Sony Pictures Television choosing to complete filming on the series before a channel was lined up. This led to
Is it true that one of my great film heroes, George Lucas, worked for free on the Star Wars movies? I seem to recall that “fact” in the showbiz news in the late 1970s . . .
–N.V., Surrey
The driving creative force behind a galaxy far, far away, George Lucas directed four Star Wars films, an was also responsible for helming American Graffi , and writing/ producing two Indiana Jones movies — working there with his friend/frequent collaborator Steven Spielberg , who slid into the director’s chair for the Indy flicks
Lucas’ net worth is estimated to be in the neighbourhood of US$5 billion or so. But the big difference betwee Lucas and his riches, and that of such other high-profile directors as James Cameron and the aforementioned Spielberg, is that they made most of their money actually directing the movies while Lucas found another,
a bidding war between multiple platforms for the continuing heroics of LAPD Special Weapons and Tactics commander Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson (Shemar Moore). In recent weeks, word broke that cable channel Starz had emerged victorious with the U.S. rights, while in Canada CTV has purchased the show for midseason 2027.
A remake of the iconic but short-lived 1970s series, S.W.A.T. ran for eight seasons on CBS (2017-2025) — twice cancelled and twice clawing its way back onto the schedule after a fan outcry.
more lucrative revenue stream to pad his bank account.
For the original Star Wars , 1977’s A New Hope , Lucas was offere US$500,000. He declined the money, opting for a lower salary of US$150,000 if studio Fox would give him complete ownership of the merchandising and sequel rights. That decision resulted in more than US$40 billion in merchandising sales alone prior to Lucas selling most of his rights and properties to Disney in 2012 for more than US$4 billion. All of which is to say, although he was technically “underpaid” on the firs Star Wars pic, the man more than made up for it with his savvy behind-the-scenes wheeling and dealing.
Moore is the only holdover from the original ensemble to star in Exiles The synopsis reads: “After a high-profile mission goes sideways, Daniel ‘Hondo’ Harrelson is pulled out of forced retirement to lead a last-chance, experimental S.W.A.T. unit made up of untested, unpredictable young recruits. Hondo must bridge a generational divide, navigate clashing personalities, and turn a squad of outsiders into a team capable of protecting the city and saving the program that made him who
he is.” Those new recruits include 9-1-1: Lone Star alum Ronen Rubinstein and Charmed’s Lucy Barrett
Gushing over the news, leading man/exec producer Moore said: “S.W.A.T. Exiles is coming in hot! I couldn’t be more excited that Starz is bringing this next chapter to audiences in the U.S. . . . What makes this moment even more special is that we’re reaching audiences in all major territories worldwide. Fans everywhere will get to experience this epic new ride together.”

One of the few pre-existing series to survive the culling after The CW changed ownership a few years back and shifted its focus to fringe sporting events, dirt-cheap docuseries, K-pop conventions and shows that had already aired in other countries, All American returns for its eighth and fina season.
Using high school and college football as a backdrop, the series has explored themes of class, race and self-actualization, as its characters have strived for greatness on the gridiron, while fumbling mightily in their personal lives.
Picking up in the wake of that Hail Mary pass thrown in the dying seconds by QB K.J., this eighth season “will span just one week in our favourite Beverly and Crenshaw crew’s life. A week that will have them wondering if everything they’ve been through over the course of their lives has prepared them for this moment. A week that will ultimately reunite old with the new, friend with enemy, and alter the course of each of their futures forever.”

Back in 2019, audiences got a save-thedate from Grace MacCaullay (Samara Weaving) for what was, conservatively speaking, the worst wedding night in the history of matrimony. After tying the proverbial knot with the scion of a millionaire game-making family, she was forced into a deadly round of hide-and-seek with her new in-laws to keep up the Faustian pact they’d struck generations ago — blood sacrifie in exchange for eternal prosperity.
Defying the odds, Grace was the last woman standing at the end of that particular game night. Alas, in this sequel — which hit theatres in March and streaming in early July — Grace once again finds heself a chess piece for the One Per Cent.
Because, indeed, even though she thoroughly dispatched the Le Domas clan, they were but one in a cadre of wealthy families who commune with demonic forces to sustain their filty lucre. And, with her in-laws now out of the way, the door is open for one of the fie other power fams to seize the throne. To do so, they plan to expand the playing field and orce Grace into yet another night of fihting for her life. What’s more, they’ve kidnapped her estranged sister (Big Little Lies’ Kathryn Newton) — handcuffing theals together as they’re hunted to the death.

aving parlayed his legendary 1995-2002 run on Saturday Night Live into a career as one of the world’s biggest movie stars, Will Ferrell returns to TV with this new series about a washed-up pro golfer looking to recapture faded glory.
Also serving as the show’s creator, Ferrell plays Lonnie “The Hawk” Hawkins, who was on top of the golf world back in 2004. But an epic blunder ultimately sent his career slicing out of bounds. Now, his playing days almost at an end, the man is determined to redeem himself with a last-gasp resurgence that will cement his status as a legend. Alas, much as we all love to root for an underdog, Hawk himself is the only one who thinks he can still soar.
As Netflixs synopsis elaborates: “His body says retire, but his heart says he’s not done yet. His ex-wife and his son Lance, golf’s new golden boy, know he’s through. But with one more major to win to complete golf’s Grand Slam, Lonnie refuses to believe he’s anything other than one stroke away from the greatest comeback in golf history.”

FRIENDS ’ROUND THE BEND!
It’s the comedy odd couple you never knew you needed in your life, as Oscar winner Octavia Spencer (The Help) and Ted Lasso breakout Hannah Waddingham team up for a riproaring, rib-tickling adventure.
Spencer plays Debbie, an American expat living in London, married to the politician who’s on the verge of becoming the next prime minister — and a man who can barely tie his own shoes without help from his exceptionally savvy wife. Debbie’s longtime best pal is Judith (Waddingham), a vivacious, “life of the party” type who works as a forensic accountant — or at least that’s what she’s been telling Debbie. In reality, she’s a highly skilled contract killer. And alas, when her latest assignment goes wrong, Judith must grab a gobsmacked Debbie and head on the run across Europe.
What ensues is not only a kinetic action comedy, but a genuinely touching portrait of friendship and the struggles faced by women of a certain age in a world where men are inclined to discard you . . . whether you’re a longsuffering wife or a globe trotting assassin.

Oseman furthermore tipped that, while fans may be disappointed not to get another full season of the dramedy they so cultishly adore, shifting this story into film has its dvantages. “We are feeling very ambitious about what is possible in a movie format,” she said. “With no need for end-of-episode cliffhaners or a new twist every episode, every part of Heartstopper can be elevated to a higher quality to create something memorable, sophisticated and atmospheric.”

Chief stew Aesha Scott talks wrangling a crew of newbies, while also planning her wedding
Q You’re overseeing a very young crew this year. Does that take you back to your rookie days as a stew, when you were just getting your sea legs?
Below Deck Mediterranean
MONDAY, HAYU
A Yeah, when I fist came on . . . I mean, no regrets, but I was so young and crazy and loose. I remember I used to look at the HoDs [heads of department] and be like, “Oh my gosh, look at them! They’re so old. That must be so boring. What a shame to be in that position.” And now I am in this position looking at these really young people, realizing that I am in the next generation. But you know what? I have got no desire to be back there. I kind of feel like I watch them as a mum with this warmth in my heart, and I’m just like, “Good on ya, girls. You have your fun.”
Q When you first made that transition to chief stew, was it tough to navigate not being “one of the gang” anymore?
A Doing the actual job [of a steward] was the easiest part. Learning how to manage people was the hardest part, and it’s definitely a skill tht I’ve had to develop. But yeah, becoming a chief stew, it’s like, “Yay, I’ve got this position. I’ve got the challenge. I’m gonna grow.” But the only way that you grow is by going through something really hard. And it was the hardest thing I’ve ever done. There definitely ere a lot of days where I was like, “Why did I do this? Why didn’t I just stay as second?” In my yachting career prior to Below
Deck, I stayed second stew a lot longer than I needed to, simply because I loved not having all the responsibility on me.
Q
In the midst of this year’s charter, you were also planning a wedding to your fiancé, Scott. How extra-stressful was that?
AIt did add another layer. The job is relentless and hard enough as it is. But Scott was a great second stew. He was good with the to-do list. But it’s still in the back of your mind . . . because even though Scott says he’s done something, like most women who have a man, we never fully trust that they’ve actually done it properly. So then you need to go double-check all their work!
QHow satisfying has it been for you to have a job that sends you to all corners of the world, to soak up new experiences?
A The No. 1 thing that’s been so great is how much it enriches the person that you are, because it is so cutthroat and the work is so difficu that it trains you to have such an incredible work ethic. And you’re working so closely alongside people from all different nationalities, so it gives you a really good understanding of different people from around the world. Scott and I always say if yachting’s still a thing when we have kids, we’re absolutely gonna encourage them to do it — because it just sets you up for life so well.

PRIVATE LIFE
8 P.M., CRAVE1
From Disney flicks as a kid to The Silence of the Lambs at the peak of her movie stardom, Jodie Foster has an eclectic CV. And in 2025, she once again showed us something we hadn’t quite seen before. Having topped the class in her childhood French immersion program, Foster shows off her linguistic chops with a lead role requiring her to speak almost entirely in the language of the City of Light. Described as a Hitchcockian mystery, director Rebecca Zlotowski’s elegant potboiler casts the two-time Oscar winner as Dr. Lilian Steiner, an Americanborn psychiatrist working in Paris. When one of her patients commits suicide with a prescription allegedly supplied by Lilian, the shrink must become a sleuth.
The Witches
4:40 P.M., STARZ 2
The works of Roald Dahl (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The BFG, etc.) have been oft-adapted over the years. Yet few films encapsulate the author’s twisted whimsy like this 1990 effort starring Anjelica Huston as a “Grand Witch” who schemes to turn the world’s children into mice using enchanted candy. ★★★
Sweetness
9:45 P.M., CRAVE1
A JUNO-winning music video director, B.C.’s own Emma Higgins made the jump to movies in 2025. Her acclaimed thriller centres on an outcast teen (Kate Hallett) who ends up in the car of her favourite musician (Herman Tømmeraas). But after seeing that this rock god has a major drug problem, she takes him hostage for a forced detox.
MONDAY
The Boss Baby
6:40 A.M., STARZ 2
Alec Baldwin more or less resurrected 30 Rock’s Jack Donaghy for this 2017 cartoon about a kid (Miles Bakshi) who realizes his infant brother (Baldwin) is, when mom and dad aren’t looking, a cutthroat exec with Baby Corp. — on a mission to ensure babies trump puppies in the war for adult affection. ★
Montana Mavericks
8 P.M., CTV2
This Harlequin romance casts Arrow’s Katherine McNamara as a New York City author who tries to clear up her writer’s block with a trip to the Montana ranch she just inherited, only to find amour with the cowboy next door.
TUESDAY
SUNDAY WEDNESDAY THURSDAY FRIDAY
The Prestige
2:20 P.M., STARZ 2
In the midst of his Dark Knight trilogy, Christopher Nolan conjured this dazzling period piece about rival London magicians (Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale) determined to craft the ultimate illusion — even if it kills them. ★★★
Night of the Living Dead
10 P.M., TCM
Director George A. Romero single-handedly created a new subgenre of horror via this 1968 blood-curdler about a group of strangers who take shelter in a farmhouse when the dead rise with a hunger for living flesh. ★★
Small Things Like These
4:30 P.M., CRAVE1
Still riding high off Oppenheimer, in 2024 Cillian Murphy led another dark historical drama — this one about an Irish coal merchant who uncovers generations of abuse at a Church-run asylum for “fallen women.” ★★★
Starting Over
5 P.M., TCM
Burt Reynolds plays a New York author whose life gets a page-one rewrite when his wife (Candice Bergen) takes off. Moving to Boston, he falls for a free-spirited teacher (Jill Clayburgh). Then, the missuss comes a-knockin’ again. ★★★
A Knight’s Tale
3:40 P.M., STARZ 2
The 2001 pic that cemented Heath Ledger as a heartthrob is a gleefully anachronistic, pop-song-fuelled twist on your typical medieval saga — following a commoner who masquerades as a noble knight to compete in a tourney that could change his fortunes. ★★
A Star Is Born
6:45 P.M., TCM
This 1976 take on the timeless, tragic romance (the third of four big-screen versions) casts Kris Kristofferso as a burnt-out rock star and Barbra Streisand as the wildly talented singer he discovers, loves and loses. ★★
Soul on Fire
1:30 P.M., CRAVE1
Soul Surfer director Sean McNamara helms another fact-based tale of resiliency. This one’s about John O’Leary (Joel Courtney), who as a child suffered burns to 100 per cent of his body, yet survived and thrived. ★★★
Akeelah and the Bee
4:15 P.M., STARZ 2
Long before she was hosting Password, Keke Palmer played an 11-yearold girl who finds purpose and joy amidst the trauma and chaos of her home life by setting her sights on the Scripps National Spelling Bee. ★★★
Slash/Back
5:30 P.M., APTN
A group of Inuit teen girls (led by Tasiana Shirley) put their affection fo sci-fi/horror flicks to goo use when they discover their sleepy Nunavut village has become the target of a secret, Body Snatchers-esque invasion.
Meadowlarks
9 P.M., APTN

ANOTHER YOUTUBE SERIES
is heading to Netflix with the streamer’s acquisition of Hot Ones: Extra Heat, a series of specials that expands the popular online talk show featuring Sean Evans interviewing celebrities while they eat increasingly spicy chicken wings.
The four Extra Heat specials will stream from the locations of various Netflix lie events, with the fist episode dropping this week, on Monday, July 13.
with the format, while keeping the core of what fans love about Hot Ones firmly intct.”
The original Hot Ones series has produced more than 400 episodes since premiering in 2015, and will remain on its longtime home of YouTube. The series is produced by First We Feast, which has a long track record of success with Hot Ones and its other food-related online series.
Extra Spicy
Guests in the inaugural Hot Ones: Extra Heat special will be Will Ferrell, Fortune Feimster and Jimmy Tatro — all of whom star in Netflixs forthcoming comedy series The Hawk, which debuts on Thursday, July 16 (covered on page 13). The trio will endure 10 rounds of hot wings, with Netflix assuring viwers that “no hawks will be harmed” for the occasion.
“As a student of the late-night genre, I’m obsessed with the art of the interview and believe that these conversations warrant a level of scale and spectacle that sometimes can’t be contained by a studio,” Evans said in a statement announcing the new specials. “It’s exciting to partner with Netfli to continue to break new ground
Over the course of Hot Ones’ still-ongoing run, Evans has spoken with stars including Matt Damon, Kristen Bell, Kevin Hart, Shaquille O’Neal and Dave Grohl, each of whom has attempted to answer 10 rounds of Evans’ questions while consuming wings that become so spicy they can barely speak.
“First We Feast has a decade-plus track record of delivering fresh interview formats and break-through moments with celebrities,” said Hot Ones co-creator and First We Feast CEO Chris Schonberger. “It’s a thrill to continue to push the envelope with Netflix and bring the pwer of Hot Ones to some of the biggest, most culturally impactful moments on the service.”
Sean Evans is bringing his popular (and spicy!) YouTube talk show Hot Ones to Netflix for a series of new specials.
GUNNING FOR A CONVICTION
Upcoming Hulu legal drama Conviction is rounding out its cast, and the latest actor to sign on is Grey’s Anatomy alum Kevin McKidd. Multiple Emmy winner Elisabeth Moss — whose numerous credits include Mad Men, The Handmaid’s Tale and the recent Imperfect Women — stars as Neve Harper, a confident attorney who finally has her shot at a career-making case: a high-profile murder in which the husband is accused of killing his wife by setting their home on fir. “But when a mysterious stranger begins blackmailing Neve,” per the logline, “she is forced to compromise every legal, moral and ethical obligation to gain an acquittal — or else risk her dark secrets being exposed.”
McKidd’s role is reportedly being kept under wraps, but he’s joining a cast that also includes Linda Emond, Jimmi Simpson, Adam Godley, Sebastian De Souza, Zainab Jah, Ashley Zukerman and José Zúñiga
UP FOR THE TASK
Conviction is based on the novel of the same name by Jack Jordan, and received the green light from Hulu back in February.
There’s also some big names behind the camera, starting with showrunner David Shore, whose previous series included the hit medical dramas House and The Good Doctor. Shore will also serve as executive producer, alongside Moss and Lindsey McManus (under Moss’ Love & Squalor Pictures production company), as well as Jordan, Warren Littlefiel , Ann Johnson, Lisa Harrison, Bert Salke and Erin Gunn. McKidd is best known for his 18-year run as Dr. Owen Hunt on Grey’s Anatomy, while previous projects included HBO’s epic historical drama Rome, NBC’s Journeyman and Danny Boyle’s Trainspotting. In addition, McKidd is also the founder of his own production company Ferryman Films, which champions original storytelling tied to his Scottish heritage.
When HBO crime drama Task returns for its second season, there will be a significant increqse to the level of estrogen — behind the camera, at least.
Created by Mare of Easttown’s Brad Ingelsby, the series — which is currently in pre-production on season two — will feature returning star Mark Ruffalo as FBI agent Tom Brandis, along with Mahershala Ali, Edgar Ramírez, Harry Melling, Adam Nagaitis and Aminah Nieves Georgi Banks-Davies (I Hate Suzie), Clare Kilner (House of the Dragon) and Kitty Green (The Assistant) will be joining returning director and executive producer Salli RichardsonWhitfiel (The Gilded Age) behind the camera for the upcoming season of the critically acclaimed thriller.
In the first season, Ruffa’s Brandis formed a task force to track down
a crew of masked robbers, led by a working-class family man, that were carrying out a series of violent crimes in the Philadelphia area. The second season will find Brandis spearheading new task force. According to the logline, “the deeper the operation runs, the harder it is to tell who’s the target.”
Interviewed by TV Week last year, Ingelsby explained why Task is so different from most series in tha particular genre. “When I talked to Mark about his character, I said, ‘There’s nothing particularly special about you as an FBI agent. You’re not good with a gun, you’re not going to walk into a room and pick up clues that other people miss . . . What makes you interesting is that you’re approaching the job from a unique spot. He is a guy that is constantly searching for good in people.”
PUZZLES
Place a number in the empty boxes in such a way that each row across, each column down and each small 9-box square contains all of the numbers from one to nine.
The idea of Go Figure is to arrive at the fi gures given at the bottom and right-hand columns of the diagram by following the arithmetic signs in the order the are given (that is, from left to right and top to bottom). Use only the numbers below the diagram to complete its blank squares and use each of the nine numbers only once.

Viewer Tip Regarding Promotional Ads on TV
TV Stations regularly promote their shows on their channel, and will refer to show times in their specific time zone. For example, a station that is located in the east may only promote their program in eastern time. Also, sometimes U.S. Stations will promote programs on their affiliate stations that are not available in Canada. These types of promo ads may conflict with the listings in TV Week because we list programs in our Pacific Time Zone on stations available only in our market area. Therefore, please follow the listings in TV Week for correct listings information.

ET THERE FINALLY BE DRAGONS! It has been nearly two years since viewers were left wondering about the brewing Targaryen civil war, but when we pick up House of the Dragon season three, our protagonists are exactly where we left them. Team Black, headed up by Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy), is about to face off with eam Green and King Aegon II (Tom Glynn-Carney), Rhaenyra’s younger half-brother. Team Green is down to one dragon, whereas Rhaenyra has amassed several dragons and an army of Targaryen bastards to ride them. Knowing that a war will only end poorly for all of them, King Aegon’s mother, Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke), approached Rhaenyra in the dead of night, proposing peace. She asked that her children be spared but appeared to agree with Rhaenyra that Aegon must be sacrified for the cause.
Rogue royal Prince Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) has become an “agent of chaos” in the series’ third season.
What awaits now is the long-anticipated Battle of the Gullet — which, according to George R.R. Martin’s source material, is the greatest naval battle ever waged. “The fun of this one was, ‘Let’s hit everybody.’ The bell rings in the boxing ring and they come out,” says showrunner Ryan Condal. “I think it’s going to put people back on their heels in a good way, because it comes out so heavy and unexpectedly. It also sets the tone for where we’re going with the season. It changes the storytelling rhythm of House of the Dragon.”
Having faced criticism from viewers about the pacing of the series, Condal says he and the writers try not to pay too

much attention to public opinion. “We had a plan from the outset,” says Condal. “This is a four-season show, and you have to wait two years in between each chapter, but ultimately this is one story we’re telling. To get upset about something midway is to react in the middle of a play where you don’t like the turn that the story took. Well, wait, because there are another two acts coming.”
As Condal previously mentioned, the outcome of the battle is about to change the course of the show. “The mood changes in season three as things get darker and bleaker,” he says. “I think there are fits and starts though season one and season two where you think, well maybe there’s a chance that they will lay down arms and find a dierent way to sort things out.” But as more loss is experienced on both sides, an amicable solution seems entirely out of reach. “There is this tit-for-tat brinksmanship that comes into play where people forget what the fist slight was,” says Condal. “So, there is a darker mood that you’ll continue to see unfold over not just this season but going into the final season as ell.”
The dragons roar as the third season continues the saga of ancient Westeros.
Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) continues to sit upon the Iron Throne, but for how long?
Yet, as the season begins, the dealings of that midnight rendezvous between Alicent and Rhaenyra still linger, offering hope. “Alicent is trying to enact the bargain that she made with Rhaenyra at the end of season two. She is diligently trying to make sure that comes to pass, but of course it’s House of the Dragon Nothing can run smoothly,” says Cooke. “Yet Alicent is thinking about survival, getting herself and Helaena (Phia Saban) out, and running for her life.” Meanwhile, Rhaenyra is finally starting to eel like the leader she always wished she could be. “A character who we’ve seen in a
As Aegon II (Tom GlynnCarney) continues to battle for the Iron Throne, Westeros becomes consumed with a fiery civil war.
reactionary position for the majority of two seasons is finally positioned to ct,” says D’Arcy. “Some of the restraints have been lifted and I think there is a great clarity to her thinking. She’s leaning increasingly on her faith and believes hers is a holy war. She believes she has divine mandate to rule, and with that, comes a reduction in doubt.”
For D’Arcy, the character increased confidene is a welcome one. “There’s something nice [about] watching a character who was once doubt-plagued — I think she has been deeply self-questioning and self-critical — for some of that to fall away, for better or for worse,” says D’Arcy. “There’s probably a positive lesson in there about being able to trust oneself and stand by one’s instincts.” Equally confident about hat is to come is Rhaenyra’s uncle-husband Daemon (Matt Smith). “Daemon has been trying to raise an army for some time and finally that addiction is about to be sated,” says Smith. “He’s about to enter the element of his life where he feels most alive, which is war, violence and chaos, really. Generally, he’s an agent of chaos.”
As war seems inevitable, the cast reflects on those big bttle scenes that House of Dragon is known for. “It’s a real blast,” says Fabien Frankel, who plays Ser Criston Cole. “The hard scenes to do are the ones where you’re sat in the council and you’re spinning a ball for three days. But the war scenes are amazing. Especially when you get all the background artists in and you’ve got hundreds of people screaming at the top of their lungs. You feel the real scale of it in a way that you can’t at [the soundstage in] Leavesden.” But even the dragon flihts inside the studio seem fairly impressive. “It’s lots of screens that surround you, when you’re on the buck,” says Glynn-Carney. “There is this hydraulic crane with wind machines attached to it and when you are riding a dragon, you get perspective on where you’re going and what you’re seeing.
As long as you don’t completely lose it, which we all do from time to time, you just get shouted at, take instruction and do your job.”
For whoever makes it out alive, there appears to be plenty more virtual bull riding in the future of the show. “We’re actively writing,” says Condal of the fourth and final season, set to pemiere in 2028. “We’re as far ahead as we’ve ever been, at this point, in crafting a new season, while we’re still [doing postproduction on] the old one. That just goes to show that the machine is up and running. But it’s also the fourth season –the end, the final ct — of a story we’ve been waiting to tell for many years, and we’re all really excited about doing it.”
As for a happy ending? “I don’t know, define hapy?” says Condal. “Do we really expect happy endings in Westeros? I think this show goes to extremely dark places, places we’ve been, and places we’re yet to go. One of the big challenges of adapting Fire & Blood is not making this a relentless, bleak death march, just because of the nature of the history. Though, I will say, that with very dark stories, even the slimmest glimmers of light seem that much brighter.”
Scheming Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke) continues to pull the strings behind Westeros’ civil war.
Ser Criston Cole (Fabien Frankel) continues to be a major player in House of the Dragon.
POWER MAY HAVE long since ended its run, yet the series’ legacy lives on in the multiple spinoffs that populate the ever-expanding Power-verse. Among these is Power Book III: Raising Kanan, which tells the origin story of Kanan Stark (portrayed by Power producer Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson in the original series) as he launches himself into a life of crime in the early 1990s.
Mob boss Stefano Marchetti (Tony Danza) and Raquel “Raq” Thomas (Patina Miller).
Patina Miller will close the book on Raq after five roller-coaster seasons.
Now in the midst of its fifthseason, this will also mark the final one as Kana (Mekai Curtis) secures his status in Brooklyn’s criminal underworld. For series creator and showrunner Sascha Penn, bringing the series to a conclusion that will satisfy fans is of paramount importance. “You know, what I hope is that the questions that we’ve sort of asked over the prior four seasons are fully answered in that fifth season” she says. “It’s always a high-wire act, a final season. ou want to make sure that you get it right, and you want to make sure that you’ve sort of earned the energy and attention of your viewers, of your fans. And I think we have . . . We’ve given the audience a complete story, start to finish”
As fans have certainly recognized, one figue that looms large in the swan-song season is mob boss Stefano
Marchetti, portrayed by TV icon Tony Danza. For Danza, Marchetti has been a dream role. “Kanan was a gift,” Danza explains. “This was a lot of fun to play. There’s that old saying that the bad guys are more fun to play than the good guy. But having said that, this particular character, he had so many different facets. There were a lot of things to explore.”
During the course of the series’ run, viewers have watched Kanan evolve from ambitious, eager teenager to ruthless boss of his own crew. Meanwhile, Curtis has also evolved, with viewers literally watching him grow up onscreen. “I think as an artist, as an actor, you’re always looking for something that’s going to continue to push you,” he says. “And season fie is no exception. I genuinely think every day there was a new challenge in front of us, but I think we all jumped at it, like super excited and ready to, to do that. So that’s all you can ask for as an actor.”
Patina Miller, who plays his mother, Raquel “Raq” Thomas, feels similarly about her experience over the course of fie roller-coaster seasons. “I think we’ve all been very fortunate and incredibly lucky to be on a show

where from season one through season fie, our characters have been on these crazy journeys where we’ve been able to do everything, right?” Miller says. “That’s credit to Sascha and our writers, but Sascha, with the vision of how he wanted these characters to be and how he wanted them to live, I fully got to live in my character and I got to be powerful, but also show extreme vulnerability.”
Another key figue in Kanan’s rise has been Ishmael “Snaps” Henry, played by Wendell Pierce. A living legend in the streets, this old-school drug dealer and ex-bank robber and his wife, Stephanie “Pop” Henry (played by Erika Woods), have been trusted mentors and financies for Kanan. Pierce — who’d juggled the role with his other gig as Captain C.W. Wagner on Elsbeth — playing Snaps has been a departure from the kind of roles he usually gets. “The fist line of my obituary will be The Wire, I know that,” Pierce says. “And, you know, I actually didn’t realize how long I was on Suits. But, you know, you want to build a body of work. And that’s why I wanted to be on Raising Kanan, because, you know, it, it is populated by great writing and great actors . . . I don’t say it lightly when I put it in that rarefied air of the Godfather series . . . The intrigue of the writing and the thrill ride that Sascha and the writers’ room have put together.”
While fans of the show will certainly be sorry to see it go, Penn insists that wrapping Book III in fie seasons had been the plan from the start. “That was always the way I envisioned it. That’s what I pitched,” Penn says. “We ask questions and it took us fie seasons to answer them, but I think we do. And I think it’s the right place to end this piece of the story.”
Pop (Erika Woods) and Snaps (Wendell Pierce) have been instrumental in Kanan’s rise in the criminal underworld.
HEN A DRAMA SERIES has a predecessor as iconic as Michael Landon’s classic series Little House on the Prairie, not to mention source material read by millions of people around the world, there is no question that an adaptation of said material will open you up to comparisons. Showrunner Rebecca Sonnenshine calls the task of bringing Little House on the Prairie to screen the honour of her life, but with honour comes responsibility. “These are some of the greatest pieces of American literature that have ever been written. They certainly were influential on m. They set me on my path in life,” says Sonnenshine. Using Laura Ingalls-Wilder’s books as her guide, Sonnenshine says she wanted to give a different perspective to the lives of American settlers in the late 1800s.
The Ingalls family (L-R): Caroline (Crosby Fitzgerald), Charles (Luke Bracey), Mary (Skywalker Hughes) and Laura (Alice Halsey).
“It’s a really wonderful opportunity to explore this time in American history from the present,” she says. “How it shaped us, and who we are today.”
The new Little House on the Prairie stars Luke Bracey as Charles “Pa” Ingalls, Crosby Fitzgerald as Caroline
“Ma” Ingalls, Skywalker Hughes as Mary and Alice Halsey as Laura — who would go on to write the eight Little House books and numerous other works that the series are based on.
“Laura is an icon and beloved over generations,” says Halsey. “She was a writer, a storyteller, an amazing woman. I’m really inspired by her. She’s a really complex character to play. She has a lot of different traits. But one of them, that I especially admire, is that she stands up for what she thinks is right, no matter the circumstances, even when she doesn’t feel like it’s the time to.”
The sometimes fraught relationship between sisters Laura and Mary is at the centre of Sonnenshine’s adaptation, with conflictsmore faithful to the books

than Landon’s 1970s adaptation. “The relationship between Mary and Laura is ever-evolving,” says Sonnenshine. “They’re each other’s best friends and also each other’s worst enemies. That’s just what it means to have a sibling that you’re close to. In the books it’s a very central relationship. I would say that Laura’s most important relationship in her life was with Mary. And it’s really coming to life in this season.”
What perhaps feels more contemporary than in the 1970s version is the relationship between Charles and Caroline, which is demonstrated by onscreen kisses and other displays of affection. “We had a lot of time to talk about what we wanted to do with
Charles and Caroline,” says Fitzgerald. “One of the things we connected on early on was that this is the couple that you strive to be, where they have hardships, they disagree, they fiht, but the love is always the thing they come back to.” For Bracey, it was not only the physical affection between Ma and Pa that he was eager to portray. “We really wanted their partnership to be one of mutual respect,” he says. “Every day for the Ingalls family is a challenge. Crosby and I always wanted them to be teammates, and a couple that takes on life together.”
From a historical significane, what was even more important than modernizing the interpersonal relationships for a 21st-century audience was rethinking the depiction of onscreen racial relations, which have been viewed as controversial in both the source material and the 1970s series. “We’re embracing a very humanistic approach to this show,” says Sonnenshine about the portrayal of First Nations people, in this case the Osage. “We really lean into creating fully realized characters — people that you want to know. People that you want to root for. These are characters that are a parallel to the Ingalls family, who are trying to make the best of the future. I think that’s incredibly relatable to everybody, even in this time period.”
The fist season takes place in Indian Country of Kansas, where the Ingalls family attempted to settle before moving on to Minnesota. But they did not remain in one place for long, and neither will the series. “The intention is absolutely to follow the books,” says Sonnenshine. “The Ingalls were always on the move, so that is a very exciting element of our show.” Production-wise, this meant moving on from elaborate sets constructed
The Ingalls family’s search for a home in the untamed American frontier is at the start of Netflixs Little House on the Prairie
for the purpose of just one season. “The exciting thing about being able to do this with CBS and Netflix is that they are onboard with our idea of moving around a lot, which is a huge production challenge,” says Sonnenshine. “In terms of how you tell the story, [we’re] really focusing on taking a book and telling a story that has a beginning, middle, and end within a season while also allowing for what is yet to come.”
What the new adaptation is never short of is heart. As two of Landon’s wholesome TV series, Highway to Heaven and Little House on the Prairie, are currently being reimagined for a new audience, Sonnenshine believes there is a hunger for shows that bring viewers peace of mind and faith in humanity. “I wouldn’t limit these values as middle-of-the-country,” she says. “This is about people looking to do good works, and people who have faith in their family and community. That is universal — not just for us, for the world. Little House on the Prairie is all about love — it’s a love story about a family — and that’s really what’s appealing. When there’s so much chaos in the world, coming back to what really matters, which is the people you love, the people you hold close, the family that you treasure, being able to tell stories in that framework is a real honour for all of us.”

As Disney continues its quest to remake every single one of its animated hits as live-action movies, the latest is Moana, based on the 2016 feature about a young Hawaiian girl who embarks on an ocean-bound adventure. Prompted by a summons from the ocean, Moana (Catherine Laga’aia) departs her home island of Motunui for the first time and travels past its barrier ree. She’s accompanied on this quest by the egotistical, shape-shifting demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson, reprising the role he voiced in the animated version) on a voyage aimed at recovering the wellbeing of her community. John Tui and Frankie Adams portray Moana’s parents, the Chief and Chieftess of Motunui, while Rena Owen is Gramma Tala, who’s shared her deep respect for the ocean with her grandaughter. Jemaine Clement provides the voice of Maui’s nemesis (also reprising his role from the 2016 animated version): Tamatoa, a giantic treasure-hoarding coconut crab from Lalotai, the Realm of Monsters.

A LAST WORD THE
Q Even after all the huge movies he did, Robin Williams would have people yelling “Mork” at him in the streets. And his explanation, someone once said, was basically: “It’s TV. TV makes you family.” Can you relate to that — especially given that soaps are on not just once a week, but five time?
A Absolutely, that’s my experience. It was then and it remains that. And I am so thrilled that the audience has always been there. Even after we went off the air and even after I’ve done other things — and people will remark on that — it’s Erica that I hear most about.
And it was a multigenerational audience, so people have great memories themselves of watching with their moms or their grandmothers, their aunts or their friends or their babysitters. So, I am quite used to, for my whole life, walking down the street and people yelling out, “Erica! Erica!” But also, because of Regis Philbin, I’m really, really used to . . . like, truck drivers will go by and say, “La Lucci!” [Laughs]
Listen, you can’t be an actress just in your room with the door shut. You have to be out there. And they could be
throwing tomatoes . . . so, I’m really happy that they’re not.
Q Are there any specific, memorable fan encounters that stand out?
Susan Lucci
A I was in Italy last fall, and there was a woman standing in an adjoining room of this restaurant. I saw in the corner of my eye that she was just standing there and she was really staring at me . . . I didn’t expect this outside of America or Canada. The waiter asked if that woman could come over and meet me. And I said, “Of course!” She just was really taken with the Erica Kane character — and now seeing me in-person, she was crying. That was very dramatic, to be so far from home . . . Gosh, that also happened on top of a ski resort in Austria.
I loved Scarlett O’Hara when I read Gone With the Wind. My friends all seemed to like Melanie very much, but I liked Scarlett. I guess I had an attraction to playing such a character.”
Also, for the fist book I did 15 years ago called All My Life — which I know is not all my life, and that’s why I wrote this new book, La Lucci — but at that time, I remember one evening a gentleman came through the line at my book signing and he said, “You know, Susan, they tell us that cotton is the fabric of our lives — but really, it’s Erica Kane and All My Children.” [Laughs]
Qplaying Erica? How did you ground this human being amidst all the larger-than-life situations the writers put you in?
A Well, Agnes Nixon’s writing was there from the beginning, even from the audition scene. It was right there on the page. You probably heard the expression, “If it ain’t on the page, it ain’t on the stage.” That’s what Agnes brought to it, and that was my North Star.
All My Children
Have you gotten used to people just calling you Erica as opposed to Susan? Do you react without skipping a beat?
A I do respond right away, because I know how people were so invested and I know that they’re really happy to have a chance to say a few words. And I admire their poise to come up to someone. I could never do that. I grew up admiring Sophia Loren so much. But I saw her in a boutique in Paris — the fist time I was ever in Chanel was in Paris and there she was . . . and I could not speak to her. I just admired her from afar. I so admire the poise of people who come up.
But yeah, I’m equally used to [fans saying Susan or Erica]. Some people say to me, “You know, you look a lot like Susan Lucci,” and sometimes I will say, “Well, there’s a good reason for that!” And they say, “No, you are? You really are?” So, I also understand it would be a surprise for them to encounter someone they didn’t expect to encounter. But it’s all so good. I’m so lucky.
Q Looking back to when you first landed the role, what was your North Star for
And I have to say that the other thing that really made me able to see all this good stuff in the character of Erica Kane . . . because she was the bad girl in town, she was not the protagonist ingénue . . . and I loved Scarlett O’Hara when I read Gone With the Wind. My friends all seemed to like Melanie very much, but I liked Scarlett. I guess I had an attraction to playing such a character.
Q What was it like learning how to function in a fast-paced soap opera production? I’ve heard other actors describe it as an acting boot camp. You have to learn a ton of lines, and you mostly only get one take . . .
A “Boot camp” is a good expression, because it really is relentless. You know, there was a Dolly Parton song, “9 to 5,” and we used to laugh and say no, it’s “5 to 9.” But, yeah, it’s a very good way to get your professional self in gear, when you go to this boot camp. But on the other hand, sometimes I feel a little bad when people say, “Oh, it’s a stepping stone [to other opportunities].” You better be prepared. If you
CURRENT GIG
Described as an antiheroine, a feminist icon and the most famous soap opera character of all time, Erica Kane spent over four decades as Pine Valley’s resident “bad girl” on ABC’s All My Children. Playing her every step and misstep of the way was the indelible Susan Lucci. While it may seem odd to call this a “current gig” given that AMC was cancelled in 2011, streamer Pluto TV recently launched a dedicated, 24/7 All My Children channel, airing classic episodes from throughout its 41-year run.
don’t know what you’re doing, you’re probably not gonna last very long.
Q When you sit down to write a memoir, which you’ve done twice now, as much as it’s all based on your own memories, does the process of analyzing and organizing those memories into a narrative inherently give you a new perspective on your life?
A You may have noticed on the cover of La Lucci and also, of course, on the cover of my fist memoir Laura Morton’s name is on there [as co-author]. It’s Laura who helped me very much to write all these words. I knew that I loved Laura’s process for the fist book, and I definitely anted to have her be involved in the second one. And I’m so glad I did, because I’m not somebody who just jumps up and opens up and says, “This happened and that happened and blah blah blah.” She has a way of asking me questions in such a way that I opened up and I told these things. She is very much responsible for the organization, and she would see the threads that followed through. For example, light. I talk about, in the book, my dreams when I was 17 years old and just standing on stage in a theatre in the ghost light; my name, Lucci, is Italian
MEMORABLE ROLES
While spending over half your life on a soap tends to keep an actor pretty tied-up, Lucci has managed to venture beyond Pine Valley here and there, making guest appearances on such classics as The Love Boat, Fantasy Island, The Fall Guy, Dallas and playing herself in five episodes of Hot in Cleveland. She also hosted SNL in 1990 and competed on Dancing With the Stars in 2008. A few years after AMC was cancelled, she joined the cast of Devious Maids as a series regular. Most recently, she shared the screen with Keanu Reeves in Apple TV original film Outcome.
The native of Scarsdale, New York, furthermore released a memoir in 2011, titled All My Life. Just recently, she published a second called La Lucci — a reference to the affectionate nickname bestowed upon her by Regis Philbin.
— and a derivative comes from the word “light.” And when each of my children left for college, I just couldn’t bear to walk past their bedrooms that were dark now because they weren’t here. So I would go in and turn the lights on, even though they weren’t here, because seeing their rooms lit up just fed me, just made me feel better and just seemed more alive. That kind of thing. She could look at it from 35,000 feet and have an overview. She was so wonderful to work with.
QLooking back on the infamous streak of 18 Daytime Emmy noms before finally winning in 1999, did the public and the media make more of that than you did? Was it water off a ducks back, or did it really affect yo?
A I felt so honoured to be nominated, because I could look around and see what good work was being done by everybody involved on not only our show but the other shows — and I know how gruelling the work was. The fact that they thought my work was worthy of notice was just fantastic. The not winning part . . . I can tell you winning is much better! Winning is a much happier experience. But we didn’t think about it much from year to year . . .
Then, I remember I was so touched that the press and the public were so engaged in my losing and wanted me to win — I would be hearing this on the streets, in restaurants, from the press corps — and I felt like I got whipped into a frenzy every year being hopeful, because they were so hopeful and they were so nice and they were saying such positive things to me. And I didn’t wanna go there [allow myself to think about winning], especially after some nine years in a row of getting your hopes up. Even the last year when I won, it was the night before the Emmys, I was laying in bed and thinking, “Wow, everybody is telling me what a great year this was. I better start thinking about what I might say if . . .” But I didn’t wanna go there. So, just the night before, I started thinking about what I would want to say if — by a wild, crazy chance — I won. And then I did, which was amazing.
The powerhouse of energy and life-long vibrancy
What are mitochondria, and how do we spark them?
They are like very tiny powerplants that produce energy in every living cell of our bodies. On average, every cell has 1,500 mitochondria. Can you imagine that for their extremely small size, it’s been said that they produce, gram for gram, 10,000–50,000 times more energy than the sun?
To say that mitochondria are important to human health is grossly understating their role in our
survival. We literally would not be alive without them. They convert our food into energy, so that every other function of our body can occur as it needs to. As we age, our ability to create healthy mitochondria to support our energy demands diminishes. And because about 90% of our cellular energy is produced by mitochondria, this decline can cause significant health issues
