KERMIT & GANG REVIVE THE MUPPET SHOW
Jim Henson revolutionized the TV variety show with the 1976 debut of The Muppet Show, with beloved felt favourite Kermit the Frog joined by an array of new characters, welcoming a different celebrity guest each week. Running until 1981, the show proved to be a massive success, with an eclectic who’s who of stars that included the likes of Johnny Cash, Julie Andrews, Elton John, Steve Martin, Dizzy Gillespie, Joan Baez, Alice Cooper, Florence Henderson, Bob Hope, Liberace and numerous others. The show’s success led the Muppets to become entrenched in pop culture, with the series spinning off into a stillongoing movie franchise.
However, ABC’s various attempts to revive the Muppets on TV have not worked well; the 1998 series Muppets Tonight was axed after just two seasons, while 2015’s The Muppets — which explored the Muppets personal lives behind the scenes — fell flt.
In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the original series, ABC is giving it another go with its new revival of The Muppet Show, returning to the original format that worked so well fie decades ago. Billed as a one-off special event,” original characters such as Miss Piggy, Scooter and Fozzie Bear return to the familiar old Muppet Theatre, with Sabrina Carpenter and Seth Rogen joining the fun as guest stars.

“It’s the return of The Muppet Show back on the very stage where it all started, and then ended, and is maybe starting again, depending on how tonight goes,” Kermit says in the special, which will reportedly function as a backdoor pilot that, if successful, will spawn a full-fleded revival series.
The sole performer from the original series to return is Dave Goelz, who originated Gonzo, Dr. Bunsen Honeydew and slow-witted backstage janitor Beauregard. Meanwhile, fans can expect the same irreverent wackiness that made The Muppet Show such a hoot half-a-century ago. “It’s always been a dream of mine to be here,” Rogen tells Fozzie, which leads the bear to reply, “Got any other dreams?”

MENNONITE MAFIA
For decades, a quiet Mennonite farming community in rural Ontario hid a secret that nobody could have seen coming: a family-run drug empire that stretched to Chihuahua, Mexico, transforming a small town into the epicentre of a major North American drug empire. True crime docs don’t get stranger than this three-part series that uncovers the astonishing rise of the Harms family, the original architects of the so-called “Mennonite Mafia” and the violent new generation that followed. “Through insight from insiders, traffiers, and pursuing law enforcement, the series reveals how a peaceful religious community became an unexpected pipeline for cartel power,” notes the synopsis.
“Narco Mennonites opens a hidden underworld that has never been documented on this scale,” says Sherry Fynbo, the series’ writer, director and executive producer. “Gaining that level of access allowed us to tell an original story audiences haven’t seen before.”

As reported way back in early 2023, Prime Video has tapped Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge to pen its adaptation of the iconic video game franchise about pistol-totin’ English archaeologist Lara Croft. The development process has been a tad slow and a premiere date is still TBA, but Prime did just release the first image of Game of Thrones’ Sophie Turner in costume as the swashbuckling heroine (see above) — following in the footsteps of big-screen Lara Crofts Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander. It’s also been announced that Turner will be joined in the cast by The White Lotus’ Jason Isaacs as the orphaned Lara’s scheming uncle, Atlas DeMornay, along with the great Sigourney Weaver as Evelyn Wallis, “a mysterious, high-flying woman who is een to exploit Lara’s talents.”
Clarkson All Talked Out?
They’re saying Kelly Clarkson isn’t doing her show anymore? Hope it’s not true. She’s the absolute best since Sally Jessy Raphael!
— C.T., Port Coquitlam
Daytime chat aficionados need not panic just yet. But rumours have indeed begun to swirl that The Kelly Clarkson Show could drop the mic this summer. Debuting in September of 2019, the syndicated series was an immediate hit in a daytime genre where it’s notoriously difficult for even big-name celebs to gain a ratings foothold. That said, multiple outlets, including the New York Post’s gossip hub Page Six, have cited anonymous sources who say that Clarkson is ready to leave the show after her contract expires in 2026. Those sources’ prognostications on her exit range from “definit” to “likely that it will not go on” to “people are jumping the gun.”
As for why the American Idol icon might want to call it quits? Speculation points to the stress and sizable time commitment of putting on a daily talk show — which no doubt reached an all-time high last year, when her ex-husband and father of her two children Brandon Blackstock passed away from cancer. (Clarkson took a hiatus to care for him in his final days.
If this is the end for The Kelly Clarkson Show, rumours indicate that distributor NBCUniversal may look to build a new daytime talker around former Today anchor Hoda Kotb

You win this round . . . sort of. It wasn’t actually her series, but that may be splitting hairs. During the 1970s, the heyday of variety shows, performers would take summers off — the network replacing them with another personality in the same timeslot. The Andy Williams Show had Ray Stevens as its summer fill-in The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour was covered by Hee Haw; Sonny & Cher passed the baton to Tony Orlando & Dawn, etc.
Sometimes the replacement shows barely got a blip in the ratings, but other times they did well enough to get their own fall and winter shows. Helen Reddy, on the heels of her feminist anthem “I Am Woman,” was offered a seven-wee run in the summer of 1973, filling in fo

That said, The Hollywood Reporter recently divulged that the network is now exploring a series that would incorporate both Jon and his sister/cousin Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) — who ended Game of Thrones on a much more hopeful, adventurous note, sailing off to explore what lies “west of the known world.”

Attorney on Trial
Netflixs dark ’n’ sleek courtroom thriller based on the novels of Michael Connelly returns to find L.A. lwyer Mickey Haller (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo) forced to defend himself after he’s brought up on murder charges.
Season three ended with Mickey getting pulled over by the cops, who opened the trunk of his classic Lincoln Continental to find a body inside — the body of his former client, con man Sam Scales. Clearly, it’s a set-up. But the authorities aren’t exactly willing to give our hero the benefit of the reasonable doubt.
As co-showrunner Ted Humphrey told Tudum: “Well, the biggest cliffhaner of all is ‘What is going to happen to Mickey?’ and that one certainly plays out across the whole season in the form of his trial. But in the fist episode, you’ll understand at least the broad strokes of what specifically has happened and what charges — and adversaries — Mickey is facing. This is going to be

After a decade-long run as one of the standouts in Shameless’ unruly ensemble, Jeremy Allen White jumped straight into a starring role on The Bear. All that success on the small screen has recently led to opportunities on the big one, such as acclaimed 2023 wrestling drama The Iron Claw. But White’s greatest chance to prove his movie-star bona-fides came in 2025, playing the Boss himself: Bruce Springsteen. Directed by Crazy Heart’s Scott Cooper, Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere eschews the usual music biopic approach of birth to stardom to scandal to redemption. Rather, it focuses on a crucial moment in the young rock star’s rise. Coming off a sold-out tour with hi E Street Band, Springsteen is creatively and emotionally exhausted — grappling with the ever-growing spotlight and unaddressed traumas that have begun to fester. Laying low at a safe house in New Jersey, Bruce is suddenly inspired to craft a solo effort dubbed Nebraska.
A raw, stripped-down departure from his usual arena-filling anthems — humbly captured on a four-track recorder in his bedroom — it’s filled with tunes that stare into the darkness that’s been plaguing him, exorcizing those personal demons and ultimately setting the stage for his career-defining Born in the U.S.A. album.
Co-starring are Succession Emmy winner Jeremy Strong as Bruce’s manager Jon Landau and Adolescence’s Stephen Graham as troubled father Dutch — the culprit behind his emotional scars.

Sins of the Daughter
Salvador
FRIDAY, NETFLIX
An eight-part drama set on the streets of Madrid relays the tense, poignant saga of a father and daughter whose fraught bond offers the writers a chance to explore a broader social ill that is, troublingly, on the rise worldwide.
Veteran Spanish actor Luis Tosar (Cell 211) plays the title character, Salvador Aguirre, an ambulance driver called to the scene of a football riot — where an ultra-nationalist neo-Nazi group has staged a riot. Among the injured — to Salvador’s utter horror — is his daughter Milena (Claudia Salas, longtime student on Netflixs soapy private-school thriller Elite), who is not an innocent victim, but rather an enthusiastic member of the hate group. How could the little girl he raised have embraced a life of
bigotry and violence . . . and is it too late to save her? Finding out will require putting his life in jeopardy to confront the Nazis that Milena now calls family. The show hails from creator Aitor Gabilondo, best known for historical drama Patria and crime thriller El Príncipe. As he teased via a release: “We present Salvador in a socio-cultural context where many extremist debates that seemed to have been overcome are being revived. Luis Tosar embodies the bewilderment of the reasons that lead many young people to feel attracted to an ultra group in the face of his own daughter’s drift, and he wonders what has happened and what he can do. This project tackles issues such as immigration, extremism, crime and lack of future.”

Ready for MO?
One of the hottest standups on the planet, Mo Gilligan returns with a third Netflix special. Following 2019’s Momentum and 2022’s There’s Mo to Life comes In the Moment. (Whenever he’s ready for No. 4, might we suggest The Mo the Merrier?)
This latest hour finds Gillian riffing on ame, family and being British in America.”
That said, much as the United States. may be top of mind lately given his astronomic rise, In the Moment was filmed in th lad’s hometown of London. As a sign of just how big a draw Mo’s become over the eight years since his fist tour, the special was shot during a sold-out performance at the city’s iconic, gargantuan O2 Arena.
A 2022 profile in th Guardian unpacked Gilligan’s particular comedic bent, crediting his “slick, smart observational humour,” and calling him a “brilliant mimic.”
For Gilligan’s part, he told the paper: “I wouldn’t say I’m a comedian who’s incredibly witty. Every comic has their thing, and when I fist started doing comedy, I would try everything: ‘I’m gonna try do some political jokes . . . yeah, this ain’t really running.’ Or, ‘Let
me sit down on a stool and tell some jokes.’ And I was like, ‘Nah, man, I can’t sit on the stool.’”
Yet, all in good time, he found an approach and a stage presence that led the Times to anoint him the Funniest Man in Britain. “I am massively influened by acting and movement, which we did a lot at school,” Gilligan continued in that chat with the Guardian “But I think my observations and my storytelling are what grabs people’s attention; that’s probably where I’m able to excel, really.”

LABOURS OF LOVE
This new flick taes a faith-based approach to balancing work, life and love. Inspired by the bestselling self-help book from Pastor Mike Todd, Relationship Goals casts former Destiny’s Child pop star Kelly Rowland as Leah, a brilliant, ambitious TV producer on the verge of becoming the first woman ever to run New York’s top morning show. That’s when her former colleague and former lover, Jarrett (Method Man), arrives on the scene — vying for the same job.
Leah and Jarrett didn’t part on the best of terms, but Jarrett claims he’s turned over a new leaf — specifically by turning th pages of Pastor Todd’s aforementioned book, which teaches people how to pursue professional success and personal satisfaction without one undermining the other. Always told that she must choose between work and love, Leah is skeptical, but soon enough the book is making the rounds with her friend group, changing their bonds for the better.
As Pastor Todd, also an executive producer here, said in a chat with Essence: “This film is an xtension of my wife and I’s heart to help people ‘win’ in relationships. I first shared this message at our church, where it reached millions, then it became a book that transformed relationships of all kinds. My prayer is that this movie inspires the world.”

TREK:
STRANGE NEW
WORLDS has already introduced pre-Star Trek versions of Kirk, Spock, Uhura and Scotty, and now two more members of the OG Enterprise crew will join the fray: Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy and Lt. Hikaru Sulu, who were played by DeForest Kelley and George Takei in the original series.
Bones will be played by Thomas Jane, whose credits include The Punisher and HBO’s Hung, while stage actor Kairi Murakami has been cast as Sulu. They will reportedly appear in the last episode of the fifth and final season, hich recently completed production in Toronto.
New Bones
In the upcoming fourth season, the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise — led by Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) — “embarks on a series of thrilling and emotional adventures across the stars. As they journey to strange new worlds, they will battle inner demons and external threats, encounter colourful new characters, reunite with familiar faces and confront terrifying aliens. Through it all, they strive to embrace a bright, hopeful future.”
While it’s expected that the series will conclude with
James T. Kirk (played by Paul Wesley) assuming control of the Enterprise, the series’ executive producers and show runners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers hinted that the new iterations of the original Trek characters may return, courtesy of a potential Star Trek: Year One series that would chronicle the fist year of the crew’s original fie-year mission to “explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before.”
“Nothing would make us happier than to be able to continue telling the stories of how Pike’s crew transitions to Kirk’s crew and how Kirk’s crew sets off,” Myers told Entertainment Weekly in a recent interview. “Obviously, when we [the viewers] come into ‘TOS’ [‘The Original Series’], it’s not the fist day of the job . . . Fundamentally, there are relationships that already exist. How did they happen? And, obviously, we have the opportunity for Sulu, and we have the opportunity for McCoy in a longer life, and the opportunity for Chekov. So it would be awesome to be able to continue.”
Thomas Jane has been cast as Bones in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, and may or may not declare, “Dammit Jim, I’m a doctor not a bricklayer!”
DIGGING INTO THE PITT
The second season of The Pitt has only just started, but fans of the critically acclaimed HBO medical drama can already look forward to a third season. The renewal was announced during a premiere event held at the DGA Theater in Los Angeles in January.
Created by ER’s R. Scott Gemmill, the sophomore series — already the winner of five Emmys and, more recently, a Golden Globe — is up for two DGA Awards and two Actor (formerly SAG) Awards. The series focuses on health-care workers inside a Pittsburgh emergency room, with the events of each season unfolding over the course of a single shift — with each episode spanning one hour of that shift.
Set during a particularly busy Fourth of July long weekend, the second season finds Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch — portrayed by recent Golden Globe winner Noah Wyle — clocking in for his final shift before a threemonth sabbatical, while Dr. Frank Langdon
ROCKFORD
(Patrick Ball) returns after seemingly conquering his issues with addiction.
While there’s still a way to go before this season concludes, one can’t help but wonder: what will the new season bring? Wyle, who wears multiple hats (actor, writer, director and executive producer) for the series, recently indicated the team had already mapped out ideas for a third season, but also indicated that no big storyline has been confirmed yet — though he does’t believe the season will be similarly set during a major holiday.
Asked whether there would be another time jump between seasons, Wyle indicated to Variety that if there were, it wouldn’t be as dramatic as the nearly a year that separated the first and second seasons. “We might not push it so far into the future this time — 10 months [between seasons one and two] was a long jump. I don’t think we need to make that long of a jump next time,” he said.
Airing from 1974 until 1980, The Rockford Files was one of the more quirky and enjoyable crime dramas of its era, following the exploits of everyman private eye Jim Rockford (James Garner), who lives in a trailer sitting on an oceanfront parking lot in Malibu. Assisting Rockford on his cases was his retired dad (Noah Beery, Jr.) and pal Dennis Becker (Joe Santos), an LAPD detective.
Co-created by prolific producer Stephen J. Cannell, the Rockford Files writers’ room included the likes of future Sopranos creator David Chase.
Over the years, there have been various attempts at rebooting the show, including a failed 2009 pilot starring Dermot Mulroney as Rockford, and a feature film starring Vince Vaughn that
never got off the ground
NBC is taking another crack at it, with Variety reporting that a pilot has been ordered, which will offer a contemporary take on the character.
“Newly paroled after doing time for a crime he didn’t commit, James Rockford returns to his life as a private investigator using his charm and wit to solve cases around Los Angeles,” reads the synopsis. “It doesn’t take long for his quest for legitimacy to land him squarely in the crosshairs of both local police and organized crime.”
The project comes from writer Mike Daniels (The Village), and producers Sarah Timberman and Carl Beverly (Elementary). Casting is underway to find the new Jim Rockford.

Place a number in the empty boxes in such a way that each row across, each column down and each small 9-box square contains all of the numbers from one to nine.
The idea of Go Figure is to arrive at the fi gures given at the bottom and right-hand columns of the diagram by following the arithmetic signs in the order the are given (that is, from left to right and top to bottom). Use only the numbers below the diagram to complete its blank squares and use each of the nine numbers only once.

Viewer Tip Regarding Promotional Ads on TV
TV Stations regularly promote their shows on their channel, and will refer to show times in their specific time zone. For example, a station that is located in the east may only promote their program in eastern time. Also, sometimes U.S. Stations will promote programs on their affiliate stations that are not available in Canada. These types of promo ads may conflict with the listings in TV Week because we list programs in our Pacific Time Zone on stations available only in our market area. Therefore, please follow the listings in TV Week for correct listings information.

THE LATEST ENTRY IN THE STAR TREK FRANCHISE BRINGS FANS
REACH FOR THE STARS
WHEN CREATING A NEW SERIES for the iconic science fiction fanchise Star Trek, showrunner Alex Kurtzman had to ask himself big questions about past and present. “If we were going to make a show designed to bring in a new audience of young people who have no experience of Star Trek, and also appeal to all the people who love Star Trek and are steeped in 60 years of it, how do you do that?” he says. “And how do you speak to this moment?”
STARFLEET ACADEMY
In a politically fraught world, Kurtzman didn’t have to stretch his imagination to find a guiding principle for Starfleet cademy. “You’ve got a generation that’s inherited a very divided world, and it’s their job to figue out a way to find optimism” says Kurtzman, the father of a teenage son. “I see my son hold both of those things: I see him hold this sense of an uncertain future and also this absolute youthful exuberance that anything is possible, and it’s beautiful. That’s what Star Trek is really about.”
For Kurtzman, a long-time producer of Trek films and V shows, nailing Starfleet cademy wasn’t just about making the young cadets resonate with an audience. “In many ways it was just as important for the teachers to be as interesting as the students,” he says. “What I kept saying to the writers’ room is that we cannot make a show where when the adults show up onscreen, the kids want to fast forward. They have to be just as interested in the adults.”
With Oscar winner Holly Hunter in the role of Chancellor Nahla Ake, curiosity is all but guaranteed. “She’s a 400-year-old Lanthanite, and I’ve never seen a captain like her before,” says Kurtzman’s co-showrunner Noga Landau. “I also think that her spirit and her sense of adventure, it percolates through the mood of the school. Then you bring the cadets into it, and there’s an energy to Starfleet cademy that has the fun of Hogwarts, and it has the discipline of Xavier’s School for Gifted Children, but it’s also totally its own thing.”
The students at Starfleet cademy represent the many species that have become well known to Star Trek fans. To embody those races, the actors dug deep into past series. “I watched

a ton of episodes that Klingons were in, just to get an understanding of this culture,” says Karim Diane, who plays Klingon medical student Jay-Den Kraag. “But at the same time, this is a very different version of a Klingon, so that also gave me space to explore a little bit. Jay-Den is not a traditional warrior. He doesn’t want to go into battle, he wants to be a doctor. So [it was about] creating a new character in context of what’s come before.”
Joining a franchise like Star Trek may be a dream come true for a young actor, but for Sandro Rosta, who plays series lead Caleb Mir, the process of landing his fist big role felt somewhat unreal. “As an actor, especially a new actor, you get really good auditions but you’re not going to book them. So, you send [the tape] off in ood faith that you’re going to do the best work you can, then you forget about it,” he says. “I have, to this day, yet to feel the truth of what this is, in my bones. I’m just extremely blessed to be able to play in a sand box as beautiful, sacred and important as this one.”
If we were going to make a show designed to bring in a new audience of young people who have no experience of Star Trek, and also appeal to all the people who love Star Trek and are steeped in 60 years of it, how do you do that?
And how do you speak to this moment?”
Having now immersed himself in the franchise, Rosta found the strongest connection between past and present in Star Trek: The Next Generation. “The Next Generation represents the golden era. Our show is set in a time where that needs to be rebuilt from the ground up. The fact that we are starting from ground zero means that we need to rediscover how to get back to that place of having a society that follows rules in a way that is not restrictive but inclusive, in the sense that everyone has a place [in it],” he says. “I think that is something that I found to be the most impactful about Star Trek, that it does carry this [idea of] home for anyone who wants to be a part of it. And it encourages us to be the best versions of ourselves.”
While the new generation of actors come to Star Trek fresh, most of the elder statesmen have a personal history with the Gene Roddenberry series that started it all. “My dad had watched it when it was originally on in the ’60s, and when it was syndicated, he thought, ‘You’re a weird child, you might like this,’ ” recalls Paul Giamatti, who joins

the cast as part-Klingon, all-adversary Nus Braka. “And I really did. I loved it.” Hunter also associates Star Trek with family time. “My dad, two brothers and I sat and watched Star Trek,” says Hunter, who was mesmerized by the aesthetic of the original show. “It was the beautiful mustard colour of the suits that they were wearing and the way they moved . . . The guys were like pieces of granite. They stood and talked, not moving until they moved to the chair. It was just very iconic and had some of the same feeling that Westerns had for me.”
As Landau pointed out previously, comparisons can be drawn between Starfleet cademy and other schools throughout pop culture, for extraordinary children. Landau and her colleagues, however, believe there is room for everyone. “We’re all genre fans,” says Landau. “Those schools and the way they were brought to life onscreen is extraordinary. And Starfleet cademy existed before all of them. It existed in the original series. In deciding how we were going to represent Starfleet cademy, we really leaned into the idea that people have been waiting for 60 years to go to Starfleet cademy, so we better deliver on the wish fulfillment”

King Charles’ philosophy of maintaining harmony with nature is explored in a landmark new documentary
A ROYAL M
IIT’S FAIR TO SAY that no group of people have experienced the kind of scrutiny over the past century or so than Britain’s royal family. Tabloids have lapped up their various scandals, while big-screen films, mde-for-TV movies and series such as The Crown have dramatized their myriad foibles. Meanwhile, countless documentaries have delved into virtually all aspects of their lives, both private and public.
In terms of the latter, a new doc arrives this week that is official sanctioned by the crown: Finding Harmony: A King’s Vision, focusing on King Charles’ lifelong commitment to environmentalism.
“Nature is our sustainer — we are a part of nature. Therefore, what we do to her, we do to ourselves. For much of my life I have sought to
promote and encourage ways we can work with, rather than against nature. In other words, to restore balance to our planet which is under such stress,” said Charles in a statement about this new project.
“This film will, I hop, demonstrate just some of the remarkable work being done around the world to put harmony into practice, from the forests of Guyana to sustainable communities in India — and, closer to home, through the work of my King’s Foundation at Dumfries House and Highgrove.”
As the fil’s official synops declares, the basis of the film is th king’s philosophy of harmony, which posits that “by understanding the balance, order and relationships between ourselves and the natural world, we can create a more

sustainable future.” The principles of this philosophy were explored in a 2010 book, Harmony: A New Way of Looking At Our World, which explained his holistic approach to nature while also detailing his views on climate change.
“The King’s philosophy of harmony encourages us to see ourselves as part of nature, not apart from nature,” notes the synopsis. “His Majesty believes looking at the world in this way and understanding that nature is at the core of human well being and prosperity will highlight the urgent need to take practical action to protect and restore the climate and planet, and ultimately build a sustainable future.”
The documentary — which is being simultaneously released in 240 countries and territories worldwide

via Prime Video — explores the origins, evolution and scientific foundations of this philosophy, examining how this vision has sparked a global movement through examples such food production, urbanism, community regeneration, sustainable textiles and traditional skills. In addition, Charles shares his own reflections on his decdes-long quest to promote sustainability throughout the world.
“Never has it been more important for the world to make a concerted effort to protect and prioritise our planet, and to restore our relationship with it,” the monarch added. “It is therefore my fondest hope that this film my encourage a new audience to learn about the philosophy of Harmony — and perhaps inspire

the same sense of determination it has given me to help build a more sustainable future.”
According to the fil’s director, Nicolas Brown, even he was surprised to discover the extent of Charles’ work in this area. “Remarkably few people around the world know the full depth of the king’s lifelong battle to bring nature and humanity into harmony,” he said. “Even today, His Majesty’s work with The King’s Foundation is transforming the world in so many inspiring ways.”
Added Brown: “This is a story of hope and resilience. People who watch this film will leve feeling uplifted and motivated. The king’s philosophy offers something for everyone. Mostly, he shows us the power of resilience — and how following your intuition can transform the world.”
Courtenay Valenti, head of fil for Amazon MGM Studios, said: “We are deeply honoured to bring His Majesty’s pioneering environmental philosophy to Prime Video audiences worldwide through this landmark documentary. Finding Harmony
represents the culmination of The king’s lifelong dedication to sustainability and environmental stewardship. We believe this collaboration, championed by Amazon MGM Studios head of documentary features Brianna Oh, will not only showcase the king’s remarkable vision but also inspire viewers across the globe to consider their own relationship with the natural world.”
“

King Charles shares the ecological philosophy that has guided him throughout his life.
Women OF A
A group of menopausal women regain their voices by forming a punk band in Riot Women
FEMALE RAGE takes centre stage in Sally Wainwright’s new series about a group of menopausal women who find their oices when they form a punk rock band, but as we fist meet these Riot Women, they are giving offmore of a whimper than a roar. Ungrateful children, selfish partners, joyless careers — it’s all part of life at this stage — and Beth (Joanna Scanlan), Jess (Lorraine Ashbourne), Holly (Tamsin Greig), and Yvonne (Amelia Bullmore) are too tired to put up much of a fiht.
Meet the Riot Women (L-R): Jess Burchill (Lorraine Ashbourne), Kitty Eckersley (Rosalie Craig), Beth Thornton (Joanna Scanlan), Yvonne Vaux (Amelia Bullmore) and Holly Gaskell (Tamsin Greig).
The Riot Women in action
CERTAIN RAGE
In fact, 60-something smalltown English teacher Beth has literally reached the end of a blue rope. “She’s given up,” says Scanlan. “She feels redundant. She feels unloved. She’s turned it against herself. I think she feels like all the effort, work, love and care that she’s put into her whole life means nothing to anyone. She just says, ‘That’s it. I’m out.’ ” Except that, when it comes to ending her life, dutiful Beth can’t quite get to it. “Even a grand suicide is interrupted by a habitual sense of responsibility. ‘The phone’s ringing, I better answer it,’ ” says Scanlan with a chuckle.
The absurdity of even the gravest situation is just one of the things Scanlan appreciates about the Happy Valley creator’s writing. “Sally’s got this great comedic undercut,” she says. What Wainwright also does, quite expertly, is highlight how that female rebellion that once was so prevalent in pop culture has been extinguished and is due for a resurgence. “I was a teenager in the late ’70s and a student in the ’80s, and, at that point, this definition of the ageful female

experience was everywhere. It was huge,” says Scanlan. “It’s almost like it got squashed.”
When Jess comes to her best friend with the idea of entering a local talent competition, the idea of forming a rock band awakens something forgotten in Beth. “For a tiny, fleeting moment they’re back to being 18-year-olds, with life before them,” says Scanlan. “It hearkens back to the sense of potential.” Their search for a lead singer leads the women to Kitty (Rosalie Craig), a troubled woman, two decades their junior, whose wits’ end looks drastically different from Beth’s. “Kitty is selfsabotaging in a way where I’m not sure she knows if she wants to be in the world anymore. She’s trying to numb some kind of crazy pain,” says Craig, whose fist scene has her character downing vodka and painkillers in the aisle of a supermarket. “While Beth’s planned her exit, Kitty just reacts. She throws the table up and is like, ‘Right, I’m just going to do this next.’ ”
Beth should be deterred by Kitty’s chaos, yet her sense of competitiveness overrides most logical concerns. “Beth
just hears a voice. She knows it’s going to work, and she’s prepared to put up with the s**t that goes with that. That’s a cliché of all bands, isn’t it?” laughs Scanlan. “But there is also that recognition of someone that at the best is an equal and at the worst is a superior being. Either way, she gets what she wants out of it.” For Kitty, having these women enter her life allows her to finally aim or something better. “They see her like she’s never seen herself before,” says Craig. “Women are very powerful, in terms of what we bring out of one another. And oftentimes we see in dramas that we’re pitted against each other, and I think Sally’s trying to say, ‘Women, actually, are a force for good.’ ”
To that end, an unlikely friendship grows between Beth and Kitty. “Kitty provides Beth with a newness and a tabula rasa,” says Scanlan. “She’s never going to have a wild, irresponsible, badly behaved, drugtaking lunatic as an equal in her life, under any other circumstance than in a band together. So, it brings about a confrontation with difference — and a joy in difference — and finding thi rope of creative wonderment. They

can’t believe the high that they get out of doing this thing together.”
Craig likens the relationship between these two women to a love story. “It’s like an instinctive thing,” she says. “A friendship sometimes is like falling in love, isn’t it? When you just meet someone and you get them and you have a shared interest, or suddenly you’re inspired to do things like write music or take up a new hobby. They change each other in a way where they restart their lives.” Being punk rock musicians also provides an outlet for emotions that have long percolated inside each of the band members. “It’s like a Victorian thing — suddenly you hit 40-plus and you’re dead?” says Craig. “We don’t want to shut up and told that we’re irrelevant and invisible. We’ve got a lot to say. I’ve hit this age, and I know myself better than I’ve ever known myself, so why would I want to be quiet?”
When it comes to Wainwright, Craig and Scanlan are both effusie. “Unlike a lot of scripts where you’ll have the dialogue and minimal stage directions, Sally’s stage directions can often take over a lot of the page,” says Scanlan. “But they’re not physical actions. They are about the internal state of the character, about the way they are seeing themselves or the world. I think that gives you a head start, as an actor, into the mindset behind the words. There’s something almost novelistic in those scripts.” Craig concurs that the experience of working for Wainwright is unique. “She writes the human condition brilliantly, and she writes women brilliantly,” she says. As someone who has read her fair share of supportive women roles, the characters in Riot Women feel like part of a movement that is more important than ever. “It is work being made by women, and it’s not just for women, but it’s us saying, ‘If we want change, we have to create it,’ ” says Craig. “That’s exactly what Riot Women is saying.”
It’s like a Victorian thing — suddenly you hit 40-plus and you’re dead? We don’t want to shut up and told that we’re irrelevant and invisible. We’ve got a lot to say. I’ve hit this age, and I know myself better than I’ve ever known myself, so why would I want to be quiet?”

Director Sam Raimi (Spider-Man, The Evil Dead) combines laughs and horror for this comedic thriller that’s been described as a cross between Castaway and Misery. Rachel McAdams and Dylan O’Brien portray work colleagues who wind up stranded together on a deserted island after they’re the only two survivors of a plane crash. As they get their bearings on the island, the two must overcome their past grievances and figure out how to work together if they’re going to survive. Ultimately, however, their ordeal becomes an unsettling and darkly humourous battle of wills and wits to make it out alive. “Its theme is that of power dynamics being turned on their head,” Raimi told Empire, admitting that when he was first pitched the stor, “I laughed and couldn’t believe they were doing this. It was really outrageous, even for me, who makes outrageous horror films . . . What they’r coming to terms with is who they really are. And as the layers start shedding, we see certain conflicts emerg.”

A LAST WORD THE
Q The language of Spartacus has such a particular texture and rhythm. As an actor, what was it like assimilating those words?
A So, I actually graduated as an English major from the University of Toronto. I was a nerd that was like, “I love Shakespeare and iambic pentameter!” Little did I know that nerdiness I had would lend itself well to this character. It’s in Roman syntax, but I think I understood the cadence of it because it lends itself to Shakespearean language very well. And then it’s just practice. I was like, “What feels good in my mouth? What is the intention behind some of these words? What am I really saying without saying it?”
It was an interesting exploration for me to delve into a new character and accent and world that I hadn’t explored. I feel like there was a level of politeness and not politeness in that language. We do have a lot of expletives and very intense language, but at the same time it has the propriety of that Roman society. It made me research, it made me think, it made me really delve into the character to
understand why they were saying what they were saying and the intention behind it.
Q Spartacus is a franchise with graphic violence and graphic sex. Those aspects led to the original show being dismissed by a lot of people who couldn’t see the incredibly nuanced, satisfying storytelling beneath all the blood and guts . . .

A See, this is the thing. Steven DeKnight [series creator] is such a brilliant writer that it’s no doubt he will always bring an amazing story with very deep, complex characters, layered characters. House of Ashur, it’s bold — it’s a bloody, sexy, drama-filled orld, and that in itself is salacious. Anybody who loves a good cinematic version of a television show will fall in love with it.
SEASON FINALE
Each one of these characters is discovering what the cost is to them to survive this world that is bloody, that is audacious, that is gritty and unapologetic.
And it may have fallen under the radar at the time, but I always ask the question, “By who?” Because I remember looking at the show for the fist time and falling in love with it not because of blood, sex and violence, but because there was a character that was, really, trying to get back to his wife. And I feel like that in itself is something people can identify with — regardless of language, regardless of the blood and the sex and the violence. They may turn away at those points, and it’s definitel not for the faint of heart, but when they get to the core and the human condition and the humanity of a lot of the characters and their journeys, that’s what we really understand. That’s what this world is all about.

through the past to find our empwerment in the future and redefine ouselves. So, we never want to say your past life is completely dead. In fact, in Spartacus’ journey, the past was still alive; he had to redefine himself in this nw world using the fuel of the past to find tht power to overcome the obstacles that were in front of him.
And in that same respect, Achillia has her own version of a past that she’s trying to overcome to redefine heself in this new world, to get what she wants.
Q On that note, can you talk a little bit about Achillia’s relationship with Ashur? Because he is a very different sort of dominus than Batiatus (John Hannah) was in the original series. As a former slave himself, Ashur is almost on a more equal footing with his own slaves, his own gladiators. He can relate to their struggles.
And Achillia is no different, you know? She’s breaking through boundaries and barriers to be able to find epresentation in a world that doesn’t want her.
Q You call her “Achillia,” but in typical Spartacus fashion, that’s not her real name. It’s the name given to her by her owner. Is that emblematic of the show’s exploration of power and subjugation — the fact that she embarks on this journey of self-determination with a name that’s forced upon her?
A There’s a powerful moment between Ashur (Nick E. Tarabay) and Achillia where basically they get into this fiht. And he’s asking her why does she fail, and he beats her down into the ground to the point where she has to come out with the vulnerability of her journey in the past. I do believe this character is about how we break
A I think that’s the discovery of both of their characters — understanding how much alike they are. And I don’t even think Ashur knows the real reason why he chose Achillia. I mean, level one is a spectacle in the games — something brand-new we’ve never seen before. But as they go on this journey together, they start realizing that both of them are underdogs and outsiders. They’re trying to find a ay in a society that doesn’t really want them. They’re going to have to find a ay to define themseles and survive. And it’s very interesting that Ashur has chosen a version of someone who has that
CURRENT GIG
A sequel to cultishly adored sword-and-sandals epic Spartacus, House of Ashur posits an alternate timeline in which the duplicitous Ashur (Nick E. Tarabay) did not lose his head at the end of season three, but rather continued helping the Roman Empire crush the slave rebellion and was rewarded with ownership of the ludus where he once toiled. His top gladiator? Achillia (Tenika Davis) a Nubian slave with a tortured past, whom our antihero molds into the first-ever woman to stand as champion in the arena
same journey he’s on. But I do believe, finall, they come to an understanding that both of them have obstacles and have found a way to navigate that, in strength and in power.
Q In this alternate timeline, Ashur is livin’ the dream. This is exactly what he was working towards in the original show before he died. But is it a case of, “Be careful what you wish for?” Even with all his newfound power, he’s now at the bottom rung of a different social ladde, again being spat on by people who think they’re better than him . . .
A I think each one of these characters is discovering what the cost is to them to survive this world that is bloody, that is audacious, that is gritty and unapologetic. Ashur and Achillia are exploring exactly what that looks like for them. It almost costs Achillia her life. I believe it also costs her things that are unexpected — breaks her down to the point where she has no choice but to be vulnerable and confront a past that she doesn’t want to.
Q You’ve delved into the internal character-building aspect of it all. But from a physical standpoint, what did it take to become a legit gladiator?
MEMORABLE ROLES
Hitting the scene as a contender on the very first season of Canada’s Next Top Model in 2006, Newmarket, Ontario’s Tenika Davis didn’t emerge victorious from that catwalk clash — yet did manage to parlay her reality TV spotlight into a bustling acting career that’s just hit a new peak.
In the lead-up to Spartacus: House of Ashur, her notable projects included stints on Degrassi: The Next Generation, sci-fi mind-bender Beacon 23, dark superhero series Jupiter’s Legacy and horror anthology Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities
On the personal front, Davis has trained in the martial art of Taekwondo — and, per her official b, loves “watching movies, cars, reading, astrology, paddle-surfing and music” Another passion? Her two cats: Maximillian and Symeon.
A I feel like life did prepare me for this journey that I was undertaking as Achillia, without knowing it. I had a mantra I would say to myself every day that I was a “gladiator.” [Laughs] This is years before even getting cast in the show. I hated winter and running, so I decided to do things — and it sounded crazy at the time — like running through the snow in negative-40, screaming out, “I am a gladiator!” Because I needed to find a ay to work through winter. I was like, I’m gonna do something that’s really, really physically difficult, andy the time the snow melts, it’ll seem really easy, and I will have proved to myself that I can find esilience in tough circumstances. Now, I didn’t know there was going to be a character called Achillia that would have her own tough circumstances she would have to push through.
I do believe having that life, and having a martial arts background and having to fiht in arenas, in tournaments with black belts that were way more skilled than I was — hitting the ground and having to get back up — prepared me for this character. All of those elements came together into a beautiful cacophony that lent itself to being able to bring truth to her.
Q No matter what the role, being an actor is a test of perseverance. Were there coping techniques you developed to weather that storm of constant rejection?
A If I feel discomfort and I don’t like something, I always ask myself, “What can I learn from this and how can I use it?” And the great thing is, in Achillia, that same discomfort of having to deal with rejections is actually what I was able to use.
I’m grateful for every “No.” I’m grateful for every single moment where someone has shut a door and told me I couldn’t do something — because those were the things that I was channelling to play this character.
The powerhouse of energy and life-long vibrancy
What are mitochondria, and how do we spark them?
They are like very tiny powerplants that produce energy in every living cell of our bodies. On average, every cell has 1,500 mitochondria. Can you imagine that for their extremely small size, it’s been said that they produce, gram for gram, 10,000–50,000 times more energy than the sun?
To say that mitochondria are important to human health is grossly understating their role in our
survival. We literally would not be alive without them. They convert our food into energy, so that every other function of our body can occur as it needs to. As we age, our ability to create healthy mitochondria to support our energy demands diminishes. And because about 90% of our cellular energy is produced by mitochondria, this decline can cause significant health issues
