Food, at its core, is beautifully simple. Good quality, whole ingredients can be transformed into something wild and magical when flavours collide. It awakens the senses, transports us through space and time, and turns the ordinary into the extraordinary. It taps into our deepest emotions and reminds us of who we are and how we love.
Choosing whole foods doesn’t mean going without. It means leaning in and getting curious. It means trading the processed and predictable for naturally delicious and playful. A chance to explore colour, texture, and flavour at their peak, alive with the taste of season and story.
A cut of meat you’ve never tried, a fruit rind you thought was trash, or a homemade sauce so good, it becomes your new signature. Cooking this way invites play and discovery, and it keeps your mind wildly aware and your connection to the natural world beautifully intact.

Throughout his career, director Spike Lee has effortlessly jumped from one genre to another, and his latest is an ambitious neo-noir crime thriller inspired by famed Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 classic High and Low
For Highest 2 Lowest, Lee once again teams with Denzel Washington, marking their fifth cinematic collaboration since they first worked together in 1990’s Mo’ Better Blues. Washington stars as David King, a legendary music mogul renowned for having “the best ears in the business.” As King attempts to regain control of his record label, his plan goes off the rails when kidnappers attempt to abduct his son Trey (Aubrey Joseph) in order to extract a hefty ransom. That kidnapping, however, goes sideways when they mistakenly grab Kyle (Elijah Wright), the son of his longtime friend and chauffeur Paul Christopher (Jeffrey Wright). David and wife Pam (Ilfenesh Hadera) risk everything to save Kyle’s life.
Winning rave reviews when it premiered at Cannes, Highest 2 Lowest finds Lee at the top of his game, while Washington sinks his teeth into portraying a man who’s reached the absolute peak of his profession, only to
realize that the lavish lifestyle it’s afforded him has caused him to lose touch with what made him successful in the first place.
As Lee told The Hollywood Reporter, his film is a “reinterpretation” of Kurosawa’s classic, not a remake, but he’s keen to give credit where it’s due. “I’ve got to give love to Mr. Kurosawa,” Lee told the outlet. “That’s what I love about the premise of this film. It’s a moral dilemma. You’re jammed up. And there are consequences of your actions.”
According to Lee, the real revelation was the impressive acting of rapper A$AP Rocky “In this film, Denzel and A$AP go toe-to-toe,” Lee said when appearing on The Tonight Show. “Yeah, don’t sleep on A$AP.”

When Eminem recorded his 2000 single “Stan,” about an obsessive and unstable fan, he could never have imagined that the word would enter the lexicon (and the Oxford English Dictionary) to describe a hardcore fan. The song and its storyline serve as a guiding light for this unconventional documentary that follows a cast of real-life stans whose deep personal connections to Eminem mirror some of the many themes found throughout his lyrics.
The final film in the trilogy finds Monica (Raven Goodwin) finally exonerated after being falsely accused of murder. She faces a new crisis, however, when pal Simone (Amber Riley) mysteriously vanishes.

R.O., Kamloops AMC’s Nautilus — which traces the saga of 19th-century submarine inventor Captain Nemo (Shazad Latif ) and his ragtag crew — debuted in June to solid reviews and excellent ratings. Alas, despite
all that, there’s considerable doubt as to whether another voyage is in the cards for Nemo et al. You see, the show was actually originally commissioned by Disney+ back in 2021, but when filming concluded in early 2023, the streamer decided not to release it — casting Nautilus adrift to find a new TV home. Prime Video swiftly acquired the U.K. rights and released it there in late 2024. AMC did the same for North America this summer. Unfortunately, the show has been left in somewhat murky waters. season would require a much larger financial investment on the part of either Prime or AMC, who previously only paid for the rights to air an already-completed show — much less costly than footing the production bill. What’s more, it’s been so long, the cast members’ contracts have expired, and getting them back together could be complicated, as they’ve all moved on to other projects. That said, no final decisions have yet been made.
We were gutted to see Stephen Colbert, our absolute favourite host, got cancelled. Any word on where he’ll end up next?
R.M., North Vancouver CBS’s announcement that it will end The Late Show in May of 2026 was met with a chorus of criticism. In part, that’s because host Stephen Colbert is so beloved, and in part it’s
because the announcement came right when CBS parent company Paramount was trying to get the Trump administration to approve its merger with Skydance, and many speculated that canning Colbert — who’s never been shy about lampooning the president — was a bribe of sorts. For their part, reps from CBS claim it was strictly a dollars-and-cents move, as late night numbers have been on the decline (and, indeed, the network is not replacing Colbert, they’re ending the show entirely).
Regardless, Colbert himself will land on his feet. As fellow late night icon Conan O’Brien mused at a recent Television Academy Hall of Fame ceremony: “People like Stephen Colbert are too talented and too essential to go away. Stephen is going to evolve and shine brighter than ever in a new format that he controls completely.”
A tad ironically, Colbert has been cast in an episode of CBS mystery Elsbeth’s next season — playing a talk show host.

A respected film teacher of mine said that the scene in To Hell and Back near the end was “fake” because no one could hold onto a machine gun as portrayed in the movie. Is that true?
D.M., Delta
Audie Murphy, the most decorated soldier in the Second World War, played himself in To Hell and Back, a 1955 action film based on his own autobiography. His slight build and boyish good looks made Murphy the antithesis of a military hero, but that’s exactly what he was in real life. He was also a successful rancher and horse breeder who, alas, suffered from what was then called “battle fatigue” an affliction that we know today as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
Despite To Hell and Back being his breakout picture, Murphy took on the role of himself quite reluctantly — mostly because he felt that a bigger star would be more appropriate for his life story.
Having written the book, he was understandably a stickler for accuracy on set — including the climactic scene that sees Murphy holding onto a .50 calibre machine gun, vanquishing hundreds of German soldiers. Many observers, and likely your teacher too, claimed that this could never happen because the barrel of the gun would become so hot as to make it impossible . . . impossible for all but Audie Murphy, it seems, as the man duplicated the scene exactly as it happened on the battlefield.
Murphy died in 1971, at the tender age of 45, when his private plane crashed while en route to a business meeting.

In April 2020, in the early days of COVID, one of the first new series that arrived to keep us company during lockdown was Outer Banks — Netflix’s steamy drama about treasure-huntin’ teens in North Carolina. Come season three, the show needed to cast some local musicians. Out of 5,000-plus applicants, they chose The Runarounds, a young outfit made up of William Lipton, Axel Ellis, Zendé Murdock, Jesse Golliher and Jeremy Yun, who formed a band specifically for this audition. Despite their lack of acting background, creator Jonas Pate was inspired to do a spinoff (of sorts) about some crazy kids from
Wilmington who, fresh out of high school, charge down the path less taken and chase their rock ’n’ roll dreams. Yet rather than Netflix, this eight-parter is headed for Prime Video.
“If you do anything artistic, it is kind of like jumping off a cliff — your only reasonable expectation . . . is poverty and crushing defeat,” Pate told local paper Port City Daily. “You have to be a little insane. And young people make that choice without really understanding the life consequences of that until they’re older. That’s the spirit of [the show] — that willingness to do it with a bunch of your best friends.”
Starting in 1988 and still publishin’ strong to this day, American author Elizabeth George has kept mystery lovers rapt with the exploits of British DI Thomas Lynley, 8th Earl of Asherton, and his scrappy, working-class partner, DS Barbara Havers. Previously adapted in the early 2000s with a sixseason BBC series starring Nathaniel Parker and Sharon Small, the aristocratic sleuth now returns in a modern revival led by Sanditon’s Leo
Suter and Ted Lasso’s Sofia Barclay. Playing out across four 90-minute episodes, season one opens as Lynley, an outcast at Scotland Yard for his silver-spoon upbringing, is reluctantly partnered with his polar opposite: maverick sergeant Barb Havers. And yet, somehow, the two of them “become a formidable team, bonded by their desire to see justice done. His brain and her spirit — his knowledge and her instincts . . .”

Dexter Morgan’s Big Apple adventure wraps, as our antiheroic vigilante’s two-front war with serial killer “collector” Leon Prater and his old socio Det. Angel Batista reaches the point of no return. The show itself, however, is rumoured to return for not just one, but two more seasons (at the very least).

This throwback crime romp is set in 1970s and ’80s Mumbai, where the fiendishly cunning “Swimsuit Killer” busts out of prison. The only man who can stop him: Madhukar Zende (Manoj Bajpayee), a quirky yet relentlessly determined cop. The film is described by Netflix as a deft blend of “crime, comedy and nostalgia.”
Having thwarted the nuclear threat to Los Angeles a couple episodes ago, the task force’s hunt for the lone gunman now threatening the life of California’s governor ratchets up in this week’s finale, after new evidence emerges to support the theory that the perp is actually a member of law enforcement. Alas, their prey is a wily one — and he’s still a step ahead. While all eyes are on the governor, a member of the team winds up in the killer’s crosshairs.
Along the way, personal lives interfere with professional duties, as tech whiz Shepherd deals with her sister’s highly questionable taste in men, while Meachum and Oliveras face romantic conundrums with their respective lovers . . . even as they dance around their oh-so-obvious feelings for one another.
Indeed, it’s exacly that blend of tense plotting and genuinely characterdriven drama with which creator Derek Haas sought to distinguish Countdown. As Haas’ leading man Jensen Ackles told TV Week of what he thought would ensnare viewers:
“They’re going to get the action, they’re going to get the fast pace, they’re going to get the high stakes — but they’re going to get a heart that I think they didn’t expect. There’s a resilience in these characters — not only in themselves but that they find within each other — that makes them want to continue, that makes them want to fight. And I feel like that’s a unique thing in this genre. You don’t normally get to peel back layers of characters in a procedural; it’s case, case, case, case, case. And with this, it sets up who these people are behind the badge. That’s a really important aspect of why we’re asking audiences to follow us on this journey.”
Countdown had yet to be renewed for another instalment at time of press — a fact which should have fans sweating bullets given that, without spoiling anything, we can divulge that the final moments of season one absolutely demand a season two.
Over the past decade or so, Disney has invested a whole lotta cash in live-action remakes of its classic cartoons — from Beauty and the Beast to Winniethe-Pooh to The Little Mermaid. It’s been a hit-and-miss endeavour, both creatively and financially. This past year alone has seen two such remakes. The first, Snow White, hit theatres in March, garnering tepid reviews and underwhelming ticket sales. The second, Lilo & Stitch, arrived just two months later, over the May long weekend, and broke records on its way to earning over $1 billion at multiplexes around the globe.
Funnily enough, the Mouse House first planned to release the film directly to Disney+ — a path that executives are thanking their lucky stars they didn’t take. But now that it’s done ravaging the box office, Lilo & Stitch is, at last, available to stream.

alike, makes friends with a Tasmanian Devil-esque alien who himself has been cast off his own planet, and is on the run from nefarious forces.
Musing about what makes Lilo & Stitch so very resonant, co-star Sydney Elizebeth Agudong (who plays Lilo’s older sister/guardian Nani) told Deadline: “It’s a family film. That’s why there’s longevity and timelessness to it, because its themes are timeless. The way that the movie is based in Hawai‘i is perfect because I feel there’s no better place to represent family in the way that it doesn’t matter if you’re related by blood or if you come from a different country or what you look like; you’re always going to find somewhere that you belong. With this reimagination, that’s a huge thing that I want the world to be able to consider and enjoy and remember. Everybody has a place to belong. Family means what you want it to mean.”
Hallmark vets Emilie Ullerup and Michael Rady team up for this silly ’n’ sweet TV movie about a New York City chef who, on the verge of a major career breakthrough, is dragged back to her hometown of Montauk — where her family’s seafood restaurant is all but underwater. Here, she mulls new possibilities with an old crush.
With Will needing a ride to the Johnny 66 corporate retreat, he, Sylvia and Kate head off on an eventful road trip, during which all three come to some fateful realizations about their personal and professional conundrums. The delightfully morose Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega) continues her sophomore year at Nevermore Academy, as the final four episodes of season two debut this week.
(Gwendoline Christie) met with a most unfortunate end after she was poisoned by secret villain Marilyn Thornhill (Christina Ricci). But now, she returns to lend our heroine the benefit of her afterlife experience.
The voice cast includes Stranger Things’ David Harbour as a ferociously grumpy mountain lion; Kim’s Convenience alum Paul SunHyung Lee as an arrogant monkey; and erstwhile “Kid in the Hall” Scott Thompson as a sarcastic ostrich.
As co-director Ricardo Curtis teased to Variety of the movie’s family-friendly frights: “We’ve screened this with kids in the audience, and we love it when a tense moment is coming, and the kids can feel it. They reach over to their parents and are glued to their arms, and then boom! A jumpscare, and a few seconds later, they’re laughing together.”
The first four (which dropped in August) ended on a mega-cliffhanger as Wednesday’s latest investigation into the twisted history of her alma mater ended with the teen in a psychic coma — while, back in the land of the living, her werewolf bestie Enid’s life hung in the balance.
And so, the indefatigable Ms. Addams must fight her way out of purgatory . . . with the help of a very familiar spirit guide. One of Wednesday’s unlikeliest allies back in season one, Principal Larissa Weems
“When we got into the writers’ room, we were determined to bring Gwen back,” co-creator Miles Millar told Tudum. “The audience has fallen in love with the Wednesday-Weems relationship . . . so we’re bringing her back in the second half of the season in a very special way that is as confrontational as it is delicious.”

The advent of the internet has fundamentally changed the human experience, both for the better and the worse. It’s impacted every facet of our lives — how we work, how we play and, of course, how we find true love.
In many ways, websites and apps like eHarmony and Bumble have streamlined romance, allowing us to vet our partners and even meet potential soulmates who would’ve otherwise never entered our orbit. But they’ve also opened up a new avenue for predators. Netflix subscribers got a look at this phenomenon with 2022 documentary The Tinder Swindler, which chronicled the insidious exploits of Shimon Hayut. The Israel-born con man used the titular app to connect with multiple women across the world, posing as a successful businessman, then slowly wining and dining his way into both their hearts and their bank accounts. Per Netflix, in America alone, it’s estimated that scams such as these cost unsuspecting victims upwards of $1 billion every year.
Friday, Netflix
This new series follows one of the Swindler’s many marks, Norwegian activist Cecilie Fjellhøy, as she embarks on an inspiring transition from victim to crusader — joining forces with American private eye Brianne Joseph to help other women (and a few men) who’ve been similarly conned, yet can’t get the justice they desire via the justice system. All told, this duo is “on a mission to unmask scammers and help victims take back control.”
As Cecilie put it in an interview with Netflix: “I never imagined my personal story would resonate the way it has. Since The Tinder Swindler, I’ve heard from people all over the world who’ve been targeted by criminals hiding behind love. Love Con Revenge is a way for me to use what I’ve learned to help others heal [and] reclaim their voices, their power and their lives.”

Saturday, 8 p.m., CBC
CBC’s resident culture queen Amanda Parris returns to host season 18 of this competition wherein homegrown directors put their short films on display in primetime for a chance at both recognition and, just maybe, a big cash prize.
As series producer Bill Niven opined in a press release: “Every year, the films we receive are more creative and skillfully done. It is a mark of how many young people in Canada are passionate about filmmaking and telling their own stories.”
Nine movies will duke it out this season. The first three, airing tonight, are:
- Wet Noodle by Julia Lalonde (from York, ON):
“13-year-old Evelyn longs for the attention of her class crush. When she notices his fascination with their female teacher’s bouncing chest, she determines that boobs are the key to his heart.”
- The Difference Between Us by Dabi Anele (from Winnipeg, MB): “A young woman’s unexpected pregnancy unveils the silent fractures in her relationship, compelling her to face the differences that have shadowed her relationship.”
- The Rug by Sean Cisterna (from Richmond Hill, ON): “Edna, a senior-aged woman, discovers that a discarded throw rug she found will digest anything left under it. The more it digests, the more it wants!”
It’s been 20 years since Michael Jackson stood trial on charges of child molestation, and this two-part documentary (part two airs Tuesday at 6 p.m, repeating at 10:03 p.m.) examines how fame, wealth and power intersected with the pursuit of justice after the King of Pop — who died in 2009 of a drug overdose at the age of 50 — was cleared of all 14 counts after a high-profile trial that captivated the world while becoming a media circus. The documentary features more than 30 interviews with jurors, attorneys, reporters, observers and celebrity witnesses, in addition to court transcripts and never-beforeseen home video footage. The intent is “to untangle the public perception of the case from the facts presented in court, raising questions about how the trial was covered, consumed and remembered.”
Yet despite the “not guilty” verdict — which came after 30 hours of deliberation — uncertainty about Jackson’s innocence has lingered. The controversy then reignited after the release of the 2019 HBO documentary Leaving Neverland, in which Wade Robson and James Safechuck both came forward with their accusations that Jackson had molested them when they were children. Ultimately, The People vs. Michael Jackson “raises uncomfortable questions about celebrity, accountability and the limits of the justice system.”

Paper was at the core of The Office, the beloved workplace mockumentary centring on the exploits at the Scranton branch of mid-level paper supplier Dunder Mifflin. Paper is similarly crucial to The Paper, a sort-of spinoff of The Office that utilizes the same well-worn format to focus on a new workplace with a different theme. Co-created by Greg Daniels (whose credits include the U.S. version of The Office, in addition to Parks and Recreation, King of the Hill and Upload ) and Michael Koman (Nathan for You), The Paper features the same unseen documentary crew that chronicled Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton office, now in search of a new subject for another project. They find it with the Toledo Truth
Teller, a historic Ohio newspaper struggling through tough times for print journalism.
In hopes of reversing the Truth Teller’s failing fortunes a new editor-in-chief is brought in, Ned, played by Domhnall Gleeson, tasked with bailing out this sinking ship and setting it back on course.
Naturally, he’s got his job cut out for him, which becomes clear when he meets his team of reporters — few of whom have ever written copy for a newspaper. The most glamorous member of the team is Esmeralda (Sabrina Impacciatore, best known for her Emmy-nominated role in the second season of The White Lotus), a former reality show contestant with no journalism experience, who is particularly proud of her article titled “You Won’t Believe How Much Ben Affleck Tipped His Limo Driver.”
In addition to the documentary crew, another through line from The Office to The Paper is former Dunder Mifflin accountant Oscar Martinez (Oscar Nuñez), who left one

strategy of using profanity whenever the camera’s trained on him in the hopes that the footage will be unusable.
Daniels honed in on the subject of a local newspaper in a mid-sized Midwestern city as a natural successor to the story told in The Office. “When you think about it, the original show, they were selling stationery in a world where people had iPads,” Daniels observed. “So, the sort of timeliness is not the point. The point is, in this show, it’s sort of like people who have been a little bit beaten down in an uninspiring particular situation, becoming inspired by somebody new — and I think journalism, as a pursuit, is so important. And the newspapers have been hollowed out by these economic forces.”
dying company for another, and is now the Truth Teller’s accountant. Wary of his experience with the doc crew from his time at Dunder Mifflin, Oscar is reluctant to appear on camera, and devises a
Other than Nuñez reprising his character, The Paper tells an entirely new story — which is precisely what Daniels wanted, given his refusal to regurgitate what he’s already done — despite the clamour for an Office reboot. “Because I feel like we ended that story beautifully. The characters had closure,” he told TheWrap. “I would never want to redo that same show with a different cast, because I think we got the luckiest cast, the best cast ever, in TV, to do that show. So the notion of a reboot is not of interest.”
Those forces have been the tech companies that now dominate in the internet age, which Daniels noted have “stripped all of the source of money out of newspapers. And it just seemed like the mission is so great, and it’s such a thing for the characters to be inspired by somebody who comes in and says, ‘Let’s really do this and do it like it used to be done.’”
While reviving a struggling newspaper at a time when print journalism seems to be going the way of buttonhooks and buggy whips might seem to be an exercise in futility, Daniels insists that’s the point. The Paper, he explained, is the ultimate underdog story. “And I guess it’s also like when you’re kind of rooting for the Bad News Bears team,” he said. “The more difficult the thing is that they’re trying to pull off, the more you want them to win.” ■
THE HORRIFYING SCI-FI FRANCHISE COMES TO TELEVISION WITH ACCLAIMED NEW SERIES ALIEN: EARTH
Tuesday, 5 p.m., 6:20 p.m. & 8 p.m, FX Canada; Disney+
Since Alien’s journey to television was first announced in 2019, anticipation has been high for the latest addition to the franchise. The discovery that Noah Hawley, the man who reimagined Fargo for the small screen, would helm the new adventures of the xenomorph, made expectations soar even higher. Having already once subverted film fans’ expectations, Hawley seemed well-equipped to meet the thrills and challenges facing whoever was stepping into the shoes of Ridley Scott, James Cameron, David Fincher and Jean-Pierre Jeunet.
“An Alien movie is a two-hour survival story but, on a television show, you have to invest in a lot of characters who don’t
die, and explore these characters and themes,” says Hawley. “The challenge was, ‘Let’s take the monsters out of it for a minute and think about the show. Where’s the drama that we’re investing in week to week?’ I’m not worried about the monsters. When we put the monsters in, that’s the money-back guarantee.”
Much like these legendary directors made each film their own, Hawley also wanted to explore new horizons with his version of Alien by bringing the action down to Earth. “The Alien movies are always claustrophobic, and they’re always trapped in a prison. I’m navigating some elements that the film never really had to wrestle with, leaving [behind] the WeylandYutani universe,” says Hawley. “There’s also an accessibility that needed to be built into the show and a challenge of balancing tone between horror and action, and a feeling of discovery that is less dread-driven.”
While extraterrestrial beasts are guaranteed, Alien: Earth continues to
explore the human protagonists as the true monsters of the universe — starting with the trillionaires who own the corporations that now run the world. “What’s exciting is being able to explore themes as big as the ones that are facing us in our modern world,” says Hawley. “A technology race between different forms of immortality is a really interesting place to put the story.”
Tapping into our already rampant distrust of AI, Hawley presents the viewers with a future where machines look like humans, but for the first time human consciousness is about to be uploaded into a synthetic body. It is Boy Kavalier (Samuel Blenkin), a young trillionaire with an exceptionally short attention span, who is experimenting with merging terminally ill children with adult synthetic bodies, while entertaining the idea of weaponizing an unknown species. “We’ve got these great Peter Pan themes in the show that feel relevant to all of the Lost Boys, but also relevant to Boy Kavalier,” explains Blenkin. “Like, if you decide that you’re somebody who doesn’t need to grow up, it means that you don’t need to have any morals. Therefore, I’m justified in being a rule breaker.”
Boy Kavalier’s company, Prodigy, is the one that turns 12-year-old convalescent Marcy into superhuman adult Wendy (Sydney Chandler). How best to implement this new tech was something Hawley had given a lot of thought to. “What if adult minds can’t be placed into synthetic bodies yet because we’re too rigid in our thinking, but children can make the trip?” he muses. “Who’s more human than a child? If we’re talking about whether humanity will survive and what it means to be human, that’s the best way in.”
Surprisingly — or not, if you know both children and sentient computers — Wendy does not feel very beholden to her creators. For Chandler, playing the juxtaposition of a child’s mind in an adult body was both a challenge and a draw.
“The Alien movies are always claustrophobic, and they’re always trapped in a prison. I’m navigating some elements that the film never really had to wrestle with . . . of balancing tone between horror and action and a feeling of discovery that is less dread-driven.”
“I feel like Noah was able to create a very layered, grounded character,” she says. “[With Wendy,] I would have this image of two magnets pressing up against each other, and you just can’t get them to touch as far as the mind, which is known, and this body, which is unknown territory. What’s in the middle — what’s that void? — is what she’s seeking.”
Then, of course, there are the monsters themselves. Chandler and her onscreen sibling Alex Lawther recall the first time they stared down the franchise’s most iconic character. “There is something childlike, being face-to-face with a man in a xeno suit,” says Lawther. “It’s kind of your wildest dream as a kid, to be playing with monsters.” The xenomorph in the series is played by Cameron Roger Brown, who added an extra element to an already scary creature. “Head-totoe in that suit he’s, like, eight feet tall and he can run fast, which I still don’t understand the mechanics of how. That was terrifying,” says Chandler. “It’s such an art to bring a suit like that to life. You’d think just put it on and there’s the monster, but his movements in it were incredible. It felt very real, and I hope that comes across on the show.”
“We all deserve shows like this, where you can blends heart and drama.”
Much like Las Colinas, the bold pink resort on Apple TV+ comedy Acapulco, the Mexican-American comedy itself was often in need of saving. The show that premiered in 2021 was birthed in COVID, and every season renewal thereafter felt like a gift to its cast and crew. “We never knew when the end was going to come,” says Camila Perez, who plays hotel employee Julia, girlfriend of series lead Máximo (Enrique Arrizon) in 1984. “We thought it was going to be after season one, and then it wasn’t. Every season we were like, ‘Oh my God, we get to do this again!’”
With its fourth and final season, the staff of Las Colinas have the opportunity to bid its fans a proper farewell. In the earliest of the show’s two timelines, during the 1980s, this means hopefully
returning the hotel to former owner Diane (Jessica Collins), rather than forever surrendering it to new proprietor Alejandro Vera (Jaime Camil). “He’s a cutthroat businessman,” says Camil. “Whatever decision he makes he doesn’t take it personally. That makes him kind of a jerk.” But much like the actor turned egotistical soap star Rogelio de la Vega into a lovable character on Jane the Virgin, Camil has made the villain of Acapulco hard to detest. “I like to play villains and make them endearing,” he says. “All of a sudden you feel for him, but you don’t know why. That’s the beauty of having a character with many layers.”
At the end of last season, Alejandro put Maximo in a tough spot where, rather than stand up to his new boss, he accepted the role of Head of Operations. “As the new head of operations, he is between Mr. Vera and the staff,” explains Arrizon. “He thinks he has everything under control, but present-day Máximo is the one that is struggling with all the consequences.” In present day, millionaire Máximo (Eugenio Derbez) has finally acquired Las Colinas and asked his former love Julia (Carolina Gómez) to help him restore it to its former hot pink glory. “For the audience to finally get to see them together and see if they’re going to work out or not, it’s really beautiful,” says Perez. “I think it’s such a real and raw part of the show.”
While we know that Las Colinas eventually lands in Máximo’s possession, the biggest question of the final season is what will happen between Máximo and Julia, in both timelines. “Of course, we all knew that at a certain point they had to separate, but we didn’t know when,” says Arrizon. “That leaves a lot of tension for the audience.” The resolution is one that will surely not disappoint. “I just got to see the whole season and I was sobbing like a little girl,” says Perez. “The way it was edited, the music — it was just so beautiful. But even at the table read, when we read the finale, we were all like, ‘Wow.’ Because for us to wrap up the story, what a blessing.”
in my Mexico, with this very authentic character that has a lot of layers, and the opportunity to shoot in this amazing atmosphere, this doesn’t come very often,” says Arrizon. “Of course, we all took advantage of that and gave our everything.” This includes a musical episode in the final stretch. “The story has a lot of twists and the musical episode gave us the chance to explore all that in a very fun and light way,” says
The experience has been a unique one for its actors since the beginning. “Set
Arrizon. “We had so much fun recording our voices, singing and doing the choreography with amazing dancers. It’s a completely different episode.”
Camil praises his co-star for doing what could come hard to many: finding and portraying the essence of one of Mexico’s most famous comedians. “What Enrique does is incredible because he needs to take Eugenio’s humor and personality and bring it to a young Máximo,” he says. “When you see Enrique acting, you truly see Eugenio. It’s incredible. I mean, what he did as an actor is just beyond belief.” Arrizon describes the process as an honour. “It was always a joyful challenge,” he says. “I grew up watching Eugenio. He is a big, big, big star, so I thought I knew him. I also watched the movie, How to Be a Latin Lover, again and again, to capture his mannerisms, gestures, tone and how he plays with his body, trying to blend it with my essence. Since we have the same amazing scripts, we had the chance to unconsciously connect with each other.”
Although their road now comes to an end, this doesn’t mean new viewers can’t discover the joyful resort. “I hope they watch the series many, many times,” says Arrizon. “We all deserve shows like this, where you can unite the whole family to watch a comedy that blends heart and drama. And since Latin culture has become more prominent, not just in the States, but in the entire world, people want to know us more. Comedy is a very easy way to show how we love, how we think. These amazing writers really wrote how we are. That’s the biggest opportunity that we had.” ■
NCIS fan favourites are at the centre of an
Thursday, Paramount+
NCIS has spawned its fair share of spinoffs over the years, yet none of these have been as highly anticipated as NCIS: Tony & Ziva, which debuts this week on Paramount+.
NCIS agents Tony Di Nozzo (Michael Weatherly) and Ziva David (Cote de Pablo) were fan favourites when the actors exited the show, de Pablo in 2013 and Weatherly in 2016.
To recap: Ziva was killed in the line of duty, with Tony later discovering that she’d had their baby and hadn’t told him. He left NCIS to raise their child — a daughter named Tali — until Ziva returned, having faked her own death to prevent Tony and Tali from the wrath of a vengeful operative. The reunited couple then retreated to Paris to raise their daughter in what seemed like a happy ending.
Or so viewers thought. In the new series, Tony and Ziva are both living in the City of Lights, but are no longer a couple, with Tony running a successful security company. When his company is attacked by mysterious forces, the two are forced back together and go on the run, Tali in tow, while they “try to figure out who is after them and maybe even learn to trust each other again so that they can finally have their unconventional happily ever after.”
When the stars appeared at the Monte-Carlo Television Festival,
de Pablo joked that the show’s title should have been NCIS: Trust No One. “I think the idea of trust, and the idea of how this relationship moves forward is something that
was intriguing to us as actors,” she said, as reported by Variety. “We’re trying to address the idea of trust and we’re trying to address how they move forward parenting together with this
child and trying to make things work and having a lot of challenges thrown at them.”
Meanwhile, Weatherly says that theme applies not just to Tony and
Ziva, but even more so for their daughter, played by newcomer Isla Gie. “When you think about Tali, who is really the third character in Tony & Ziva, the idea for her to think that her mother was dead, and then her mother is alive, but was running around the world and didn’t come home to protect her,” Weatherly explained. “Trust doesn’t mean truth, doesn’t mean honesty. Just because I’m telling you the truth doesn’t mean you can trust me. And
Unlike all the other NCIS shows, Tony & Ziva is set and shot in Europe, something that de Pablo — who, like Weatherly, is one of the show’s exec producers — felt was a necessity.
“At the beginning, I was very adamant about that, like, ‘No, I’m not interested if that’s where they want to go,’” de Pablo said of suggestions the show be set in the U.S. “I really think the show should be taken out of the United States. It would separate us from the agency, and it would give us a chance to sort of reinvent it in a completely different way, from a different standpoint.”
“We’re trying to address the idea of trust and we’re trying to address how they move forward parenting together with this child and trying to make things work and having a lot of challenges thrown at them.”
I think that a lot of the relationships inside . . . You have a daughter who’s going to question the story. ‘No dad — you told me she was dead, and she just walked through the door.’ ‘Yeah, but your mom had reasons . . .’ ‘No, no, no. The facts are the facts.’ And then what are your relationships like? Where do you stand with the truth? And who do you trust? I mean, these are like the core principles of the show.”
Meanwhile, fans of the original show and its other spinoffs will quickly notice that Tony & Ziva does not follow the same template. “It’s not an evergreen procedural,” noted Weatherly. “It’s not structured the same way. Will the audience show up for that? Are we shooting out of our weight class here with a different kind of story? Is it not going to feel like the other show?”
Ultimately, though, Weatherly firmly believes that it’s fans love for the characters that will attract them into this new story, and then draw them into a new adventure. “I think that we’re going to be bringing people into a world that might feel small, because it’s just Tony, Tali and Ziva. But it’s Europe. It’s love. It’s the universe. And we have to save those things.” ■

STARRING: Olivia Colman, Benedict Cumberbatch, Kate McKinnon, Andy Samberg
In this new “reimagining” of 1989 classic The War of the Roses, Ivy (Olivia Colman) and Theo (Benedict Cumberbatch) appear to be the perfect couple, enjoying successful careers, a loving marriage and great kids. But beneath that idyllic façade, a storm has been brewing. When Theo’s career takes a nosedive just as Ivy’s own ambitions take off, the disparity reignites a tinderbox of fierce competition and hidden resentment. As the two face off in divorce court (with Andy Samberg as his lawyer, and Allison Janney as hers), their conscious uncoupling turns wickedly nasty when both refuse to leave the house that was once their love nest — and has now transformed into a vicious, violent battlefield.
When aimless young bartender Hank (Austin Butler) agrees to help out his punk-rock neighbour Russ (Matt Smith) by watching the man’s cat for a few days, he finds himself caught in the middle of a motley crew of threatening gangsters, who all want a piece of him — although he has no idea why. As Hank tries to evade their ever-tightening grip, he’s got to use all his hustle to stay alive long enough to find out.
In this remake of the 1984 cult classic, a horrible chemical accident transforms downtrodden janitor Winston Gooze (Peter Dinklage) into the Toxic Avenger. Boasting superhuman strength and armed with a glowing mop, he must race against time to save his son (Jacob Tremblay) and stop a ruthless corporate tyrant (Kevin Bacon) bent on harnessing toxic superpowers to bolster his polluted empire. QWhat exactly is it that makes this anthology’s time travel conceit such an effective tool for a character study?
AI love drama; I’m super into the Scandi dramas [Scandinavian noir]. What I love about Plan B is that it is one of these dark dramas but Jean-François [Asselin], the showrunner, threw in this sci-fi element of travelling back in time. And I don’t think there’s anyone on the planet who hasn’t thought, “If only I could go back in time a day, a week or a month to fix that one thing, then everything would be different.”
So, it really taps into a natural part of being human. We all hope that changing one thing would solve all of our problems. But Plan B shows very clearly that our lives are a combination of a lot of small decisions, and changing one big one isn’t going to make a difference.
Q Of all the show’s protagonists so far, it feels like Abigail is dealing with the highest, most harrowing stakes . . .
A Definitely . . . We have a word for a child who has lost a parent — they’re an orphan. We have a word for a man who’s lost his wife — he’s a widower. But we don’t have an English word for a parent who has lost a child. It’s almost such an unthinkable thing that we’ve just skipped finding a word for it. Any parent who has suffered such a tragedy, there’s nothing in the world they wouldn’t do to go back and fix whatever it is they thought they could fix. That is the fascination of this third season.
QAbigail is a very capable person — a famous activist who’s accustomed to
overcoming huge obstacles. But does this mission to save Lucy force her to, on some level, overcome herself?
AI kept thinking Abigail’s like a freight train. She’s powerful, she moves quickly, she moves forward. But the problem is that she destroys things along the way without even taking a second to look back and see what she’s done. And that’s part of her journey — looking back and saying, “Were those bold decisions in my interest? Were they in the interests of my family? What actually matters to me?”
Abigail is a fierce feminist — and I do think she maybe misinterpreted what feminism was. She wanted to show her daughter that she can be anything she wants to be. And what Lucy’s character absorbed is that she has to be everything She has to be as good as her mother. She has to be as smart, as charismatic, as loved by the public. That pressure, on a 15-yearold, it just makes her fall apart emotionally. The journey that Abigail goes through is finding a comfort in showing vulnerability. Because when she shows Lucy who she
A dual Polish-Canadian citizen, Carolina Bartczak played supervillain Magneto’s ill-fated wife Magda in X-Men: Apocalypse, before starring in hit Netflix miniseries Painkiller as Lily Kryger, a woman who watches her once-stalwart husband spiral into addiction.
CURRENT GIG: Bartczak leads season three of this homegrown sci-fi anthology, playing a guiltstricken mother who goes back in time to stop her daughter’s suicide — only to learn that sins of the past aren’t so easily absolved. Streaming now on CBC Gem, the season will air weekly on CBC TV starting Thursday, September 25.
really is — her failings — that’s when Lucy can say, “Oh, it’s OK if I’m not perfect either.”
QYou were also recently in Netflix’s Painkiller. What was it like telling such a raw, timely story?
AThat was an extremely meaningful project. And everyone who worked on that show — from the sound person to the director — understood the gravity of the show that we were making. Being on set, you heard so many people say, “Someone in my family died from an opioid overdose.” Everyone wanted to make sure the show was very truthful and very nuanced.
Q
Finally, what was it like joining the annals of superhero cinema with X-Men: Apocalypse back in 2016?
A So, I played Michael Fassbender’s wife. Michael Fassbender was my favourite actor at the time . . . still might be. It was the most fun I’ve ever had, and he is just an absolute delight to play with. I even snuck in a kiss. Why not? It wasn’t in the script, but let’s go for it! [Laughs]
They are like very tiny powerplants that produce energy in every living cell of our bodies. On average, every cell has 1,500 mitochondria. Can you imagine that for their extremely small size, it’s been said that they produce, gram for gram, 10,000–50,000 times more energy than the sun?
To say that mitochondria are important to human health is grossly understating their role in our
survival. We literally would not be alive without them. They convert our food into energy, so that every other function of our body can occur as it needs to. As we age, our ability to create healthy mitochondria to support our energy demands diminishes. And because about 90% of our cellular energy is produced by mitochondria, this decline can cause significant health issues.
