EDITOR’S NOTE
RICKY GERVAIS COMEDY IS THE CAT’S MEOW
When Ricky Gervais burst on the scene with The Offi all those years ago, viewers were introduced to a singularly unique comic voice that grew even sharper in subsequent series Extras, Derek and After Life — to say nothing of his hilariously scorched-earth stints hosting the Golden Globes.
For his latest, Gervais returns to Netflix with Alley Cats, marking his fist foray into animation (unless you count the 2010-2012 HBO series The Ricky Gervais Show, which added animation to conversations and anecdotes taken from his podcast of the same name).
Created and written by Gervais, the “slacker sitcom” follows the R-rated exploits of a group of feral cats in a decrepit alley, where they engage in discussions on all manner of topics — and it goes without saying this cartoon is decidedly not for kids, bursting with profanity and adult subject matter.
Alley Cats
FRIDAY, NETFLIX
If the six-episode series is as successful as he hopes, Gervais anticipates he’ll keep it going for as long as possible because voicing an animated character has proven to be a lot less hassle than acting in front of the camera. “I don’t have to do hair and makeup, I don’t have to get up early,” Gervais explained in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “The cats never get old. So as I get older and fatter, I can still sit in a chair and continue to make this forever.”
In addition to Gervais, the voice cast also includes Tom Basden, Andrew Brooke, David Earl, Kerry Godliman, Jo Hartley and Diane Morgan, best known as clueless journalist Philomena Cunk in several Netflix omedy series.
“I told them, ‘Don’t do cartoon voices. Talk as you normally do,’” said Gervais of the direction he gave his fellow voice actors. “I wanted everything to be realistic. Except for the fact that the cats talk.”

As the popularity of Hallmark Channel’s movies continue to soar, the endless stream of rom-coms and holiday movies produced have started to embrace more exotic locales (although fans can still expect to see plenty of Christmas flicks set in generic small towns that are actually situated somewhere right here in beautiful B.C.).
That’s certainly the case with Hallmark’s new series, Paris Is Always a Good Idea, with Hallmark staple Lacey Chabert starring in a series set and shot in the City of Light (for more details, turn to page 15).
Toast to Italy focuses on Jenny, portrayed by Torrey DeVitto, who travels to Italy to obtain a very special bottle of wine for her sister’s wedding. While undertaking her mission, she winds up meeting Arrigo (Will Kemp), who just happens to also be searching for the famous “Love Wine.” Together, their search leads them to find an unexpected romance — but you probably saw that coming.

A BURR UNDER ED’S SADDLE?
I heard Ed Harris, my fave part of Dutton Ranch, might be gone from the show now!?
—C.N., Langley
Four-time Oscar nominee Harris, who plays crusty-but-kind veterinarian Everett McKinney on Paramount+’s hit Yellowstone spinoff, isn’t leaving the series just yet . . . but his experience shooting season one left much to be desired. Speaking with Variety, the actor divulged: “Prior to signing on for it, I was talked to quite a bit about what the season was, and what my character was going to do — and that I was one of the four main characters. And that wasn’t really the case.” In fact, it got to the point that, partway through filming,he was telling his reps, “get me the f*** out of here.” However, he continued: “I’m being told my character will have a little bit more to do [in season two] . . .”
Archie vs. Zombies?
With the last season of All American just out now, it got me wondering about some other “CW classics.” Are they all done with the Riverdale universe shows? They got a little crazy toward the end, but I liked the vibe they had goin’ . . .
—W.O., North Vancouver
Last we heard tell of The CW’s indelibly kooky, soapy take on Archie Comics was 2023, when Riverdale unleashed its series final. But now, per Deadline, creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa has struck a deal to produce a new show based on his own 2013 graphic novel Afterlife With Archie — not for The CW, but for streamer Disney+.
The synopsis, via publisher Penguin Random House, reads as follows: “When a tragic death befalls Jughead Jones’ closest companion, his grief drives him to the doorstep of Sabrina the Teenage Witch . . . and into the thrall of a dark magic that will soon turn the whole of Riverdale into a ravenous pack of undead zombies fuelled by a desire for human flesh. Hunted by the reanimated corpses of their friends and loved ones, can Archie, Betty, Veronica and the rest of America’s most beloved teenagers battle back a legion of the dead . . . and live long enough to stop the entire world from being consumed by the same unholy hunger?”
Expect to see it sometime in 2027 — but don’t expect to see many, if any, original cast from Riverdale or Netflix spino Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
Ed Harris brought his usual gravelly gravitas to season one of neo-western Dutton Ranch, but reportedly felt “underused” by the writers.

The 1961 classic that starred Paul Newman as pool shark “Fast Eddie” Felson and Gleason as the legendary Minnesota Fats was nominated for nine Oscars and won two. Alas, director Robert Rossen , who also penned the screenplay, could not cast the “real” Minnesota Fats . . . because there wasn’t one. Two of pop culture’s consummate provocateurs join forces, as super-producer Ryan Murphy (American Horror Story, 9-1-1) adapts the latest pot-stirrin’ potboiler from American Psycho author Bret Easton Ellis.
Beyond just collecting a cheque, Ellis serves as co-creator, shepherding a story to the screen that uses his own experience growing up in L.A. in the 1980s as inspiration, albeit with plenty of creative licence — for instance, the addition of a serial killer.
Midnight Mass alum Igby Rigney stars as young Bret, described as “an aspiring writer and keenly observant teenager whose reality begins to unravel with the arrival of a mysterious and magnetic new student, Robert Mallory (Homer Gere). Transferring in just before his senior year, Robert’s appearance coincides with the growing terror of The Trawler, a serial killer targeting teenagers across the city.” But far from a simple slasher,

I just wanted to write about some of my classmates and my somewhat sentimental feelings of nostalgia about a period in my life that was also extremely painful; to finall, at 58, look back at that boy in 1981, a year that changed everything for me, and to write about it, and people I love, without embarrassment . . .”

Sport shows in general have struggled to gain traction with audiences over the years, but the tale of an American football coach who lands a gig in England, coaching proper European football — even though he’s utterly unfamiliar with the “beautiful game” — somehow managed to capture the zeitgeist. As Variety’s Caroline Framke summed up in her review of the sleeper hit: “This show takes enough care with its characters that watching them

On the subject of series coming back from the dead, you’d be hard-pressed to find a show in TV history thats been cancelled and resurrected more than Futurama. Simpsons creator Matt Groening’s cultishly adored sci-fi cartoon about the motley, quirky crew of an intergalactic delivery service first hit screens in 1999 on Fox. Axed after four seasons in 2003, the show was enough of a hit on home video and in syndication that Comedy Central produced a slew of TV movies and additional seasons between 2008 and 2013. Then, upon Disney’s acquisition of Fox, the Mouse House revived lovable nimcompoop Philip J. Fry and co. again in 2023, and they’ve been going strong on Hulu/Disney+ ever since.

Also along for the sojourn? Our heroine’s annoying co-worker Jason (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’s Scott Michael Foster), who just might be the real man of her dreams.

CONNIE: We had a lot of fun . . . despite it being one of the hardest things we’ve ever done [laughs].
Q Do you think folks out there might have misconceptions about what exactly is required for this sort of live-fire challenge vs. other sorts of cooking?
A JOHN: I mean, it’s not just popping it in the oven and setting a timer. The biggest and most important element of live-fie and barbecue is you’re managing the fie. You’re managing the coals. You’re managing the temperature. And it’s a constant. You take your eyes off it or 15 minutes, it could be catastrophic . . .
CONNIE: Absolutely, and you’re also working with the elements. We were out in the desert. During the day, it was plus-30 degrees and in the evenings it was so cold you could see our breath. And so, we were constantly having to manage our fie together.
JOHN: Even wind direction plays a part, right? That could cool your smoker down if you have a constant wind blowing. You’ve got to be able to shift things, change things, adapt . . .
Q You two are the only Canadian team in this first season. Will we see som distinctly Canadian culinary chops on display?
A JOHN: There’s definitely a northern fla. I mean, we use a lot of different techniques. Because we’re butchers and chefs, you see a lot of butchery technique and you see a lot of refinemen when it comes to presentation with our barbecue and live-fie style. Connie and my experience — where we’ve cooked and how we’ve cooked — kind of creates our own identity. There are some unique Canadian influenes, but I think it’s also very individualized.
Q Much as you’d obviously prefer calmer conditions, does this kind of stress test push you to new places creatively?

YOUR WEEKLY SCOOP ON NEW TV PROJECTS IN THE WORKS
VIEWERS HAVE SEEN crossovers aplenty on network television over the years. However, characters and storylines from one show carrying over into another distinct series isn’t something typically associated with HBO, where programming tends to favour standalone shows and spinoffs over interconnected shared universes.
Yet, that makes the addition of Julianne Nicholson in the upcoming second season of Task all the more notable.
A Task Crossover
Nicholson won her fist Emmy for playing Lori Ross, best friend of Mare (Kate Winslet) and a mother (spoiler alert) whose son (Cameron Mann) becomes embroiled in a murder investigation in Mare of Easttown Now comes word that the two-time Emmy winner — she won her second Emmy in 2025 for a guest spot in Hacks — is reprising her character in Task, setting up a surprise crossover between the two dramas.
Until now, the two series didn’t appear to share any connection, aside from locale (both stories are set in the suburbs of Philadelphia) and a creator, Brad Ingelsby
Then again, Ingelsby himself talked about a possible shared universe last September, while speaking with The Hollywood Reporter ahead of Task’s premiere. He indicated both series “exist in the same world, so it wouldn’t surprise me one bit if Mare walked into a [convenience store] that Tom [Mark Ruffalo’s character in Task] was in.” At the time, Ingelsby indicated he didn’t have “a story in mind that’s a crossover, but I love the idea of their worlds intersecting.” Fastforward a few months, and now it seems he’s figued out a way to make it happen.
The details, however, are a closely guarded secret, and the Task season two logline doesn’t offer any clues, either: “Tom Brandis takes the helm of a new task force, but the deeper the operation runs, the harder it is to tell who’s the target.”
Nicholson isn’t the only addition to the Task cast for the upcoming season. Harry Melling, Aminah Nieves, Adam Nagaitis and Edgar Ramirez have all been tapped to play roles. Plus, Mahershala Ali joins as seasoned DEA agent Eddie Barnes, whose team comes into conflict with om’s unit.
Julianne Nicholson (pictured with co-star Kate Winslet) will be bringing her Mare of Easttown character to HBO’s Task
BACK IN ACTION
Fans of the NCIS franchise can expect to see a few familiar faces returning to the fold.
Michael Weatherly, who played Tony DiNozzo through the first 13 seasons of flagship serie NCIS (soon to enter its 24th season) and one season of the Paramount+ NCIS: Tony and Ziva spinoff, is set to rejoin the team in Washington, D.C. Reportedly, he is reprising his character for a season-long story arc on NCIS
Not much has been divulged about why or how Tony will return, but Weatherly opened up about it during an appearance at a fan convention in Birmingham, England, where he was reunited with his co-star Coté de Pablo.
“It’s going to be very interesting to see what is revealed and unfurled,” said Weatherly. “But I can tell you this: there is a definit connection between [Tony & Ziva] and the canon that that created within — there’s not going to be retconning of like, ‘Oh, Tony & Ziva never happened.’ ”
FINDING HER ROCK
He added: “I have really enjoyed watching what the show has done over the last 10 years since I left, but it’s a different show no. So, I’m very much about respecting the show I’m coming into and being aware that they’ve built an extraordinarily successful tenure run but, that doesn’t mean that what we did isn’t going to be able to live alongside and inside that show.”
Elsewhere in the NCIS-verse, longtime franchise lead Mark Harmon made the surprise announcement that he is returning to acting full time. Reprising his NCIS role as Leroy Jethro Gibbs, Harmon is expected to appear in every episode of prequel series NCIS: Origins next season.
Harmon, who narrates and executive produces NCIS: Origins, appeared in the series premiere and guest-starred last season in a crossover event that spanned the past. Expect a similar approach in season three of Origins, which finds Harmo’s Gibbs pulled into a present-day mystery that connects to his younger self (Austin Stowell).
Thanks to her role in acclaimed classroom comedy Abbott Elementary as eccentric school principal Ava Coleman, Janelle James (History of the World: Part II) is branching out into some exciting new areas.
For her next project, James will be teaming up with Happy Endings creator David Caspe on a new Hulu comedy series, which will be written and executive produced by the pair.
That series is titled Rock City, the story of a woman who returns to her hometown in the U.S. Virgin Islands after inheriting a local tourist trap from her estranged father. However, she “quickly realizes that she’s been left much more than a simple beachfront bar and grill” (per the logline).
At the time of writing, there was no word on whether James would also star. Still, it’s the latest comedic project for the award-nominated actress and standup comedian, who previously served as both writer and performed in Showtime’s Black Monday — which Caspe cocreated — and Apple TV’s animated Central Park series.
James’ Abbott Elementary performance earned her a 2026 Critics Choice Award for best supporting actress in a comedy series, as well as five Emmy nominations and nods a the Golden Globes, Independent Spirit Awards and Gotham Awards. She is also a standup comic who has toured with Chris Rock, Amy Schumer and David Cross
Place a number in the empty boxes in such a way that each row across, each column down and each small 9-box square contains all of the numbers from one to nine.
The idea of Go Figure is to arrive at the fi gures given at the bottom and right-hand columns of the diagram by following the arithmetic signs in the order the are given (that is, from left to right and top to bottom). Use only the numbers below the diagram to complete its blank squares and use each of the nine numbers only once.

Viewer Tip Regarding Promotional Ads on TV
TV Stations regularly promote their shows on their channel, and will refer to show times in their specific time zone. For example, a station that is located in the east may only promote their program in eastern time. Also, sometimes U.S. Stations will promote programs on their affiliate stations that are not available in Canada. These types of promo ads may conflict with the listings in TV Week because we list programs in our Pacific Time Zone on stations available only in our market area. Therefore, please follow the listings in TV Week for correct listings information.

Jon Montgomery delivers details on the action-paced 12th season of The Amazing Race Canada
O CANADA!
F
FOR ONE MONTH A YEAR, Jon Montgomery enters the sprint that is The Amazing Race Canada. This year marks the 12th time he hosts the beloved competition series, and, as always, he was champing at the bit to get going. “You’re invigorated by everybody’s energy, the energy to perform, the energy to strive for this amazing prize that they’re working towards,” he says. “I’m energized by what the racers give of themselves and the fact that everybody is feeding into the machine for one common goal. What a great place to findyourself in. This is my new team and what I’ve always aspired to be a part of, whether it was bobsleigh-skeleton or my hockey teams in the past — this is a family.”
CANADA!
Considering he is more than a decade into his gig, Montgomery never feels like he needs to artificially conjure up enthusiasm for the show. “The places and spaces, they’re all fresh and new,” he says. “The teams are all fresh and new and getting to know each of them individually and as teams is all fresh and new.” As far as the game itself, the addition of an Express Pass to be wielded during your challenge of choice is going to change how the race is run. “Knowing that every challenge that you come to, everybody has the capacity to play that Express Pass and skate past you, how you feel about where you are in the race is now more precarious than ever,” says Montgomery. “It could be gone in the blink of an eye, and you could be

fihting for last place and survival.”
Starting the season on top of Whistler Mountain, The Amazing Race Canada makes sure that it continues to show off the beauy of the nation as it pertains to its places and people. “This country is both broad — 10 million square kilometres is our collective backyard — and diverse,” says Montgomery. “All of these communities and the people that call it home, our brothers and sisters across this land, are certainly as diverse as the day is long. Those differences are worth celebrating and The Amazing Race is a platform by which to do so: Showcase the people, showcase the community, showcase our resources. And it’s endless. There is an infinite amount that we can showcase and that

we can leverage to create the drama and the backdrops to play out Canada’s favourite summertime series.”
For the host, it is the Canadians who race that are the true discovery of what the country has to offer. “As individuals, you can read the quick fact sheet. You see where they’re from and maybe some of the reasons for why they’re on the show. That list of accomplishments is sometimes a part of that story. But the part that you will never be treated to [without the show] is how these people interact with each other, the relationship that they share. That’s always profound,” he says. “And it’s always the part that is revealed to me on the mat. To see how they interact and the words that they choose to share with and about each other paints the picture of them and their relationship. That’s always a treat.”
Montgomery understands that his own interactions with the contestants are heightened by the circumstances, but to him they are educational all the same. “I only ever interact with them after the craziest day of their entire lives and it’s definitely aw in that moment,” he says. “I quite honestly love it, these relationships and how they get the most out of each other in terms of what’s possible. I love to be treated to it myself because I learn an awful lot about effective means of communication and inspiring others and those around you. You get to see people beta test with it every single day on The Amazing Race Canada — what works well and what could use some polishing.”
This season the host was particularly drawn to mother-and-son contestants Ameen and Surria from Windsor, Ontario. “I’m a mama’s boy, so instantaneously I was drawn to a mother-and-son combination. But they’re also business partners, which I couldn’t imagine,” he laughs. “I mean, I love my mom, but working with her, good God, that would be a new part of a relationship that I can’t fathom.”
The 12th season hit the ground running by kicking things off atop Whistler Mountain.
Montgomery was curious about how the partnership would work in a competition environment. “You can see how this dynamic duo would work well together in business as well as they do on the race,” he says. “And Surria, she’s not a spring chicken. I’m not outing her here — she says it, ‘61 years young.’ But I love that age is just a number, and how well Surria can deal with the rigor of the race. And, of course, with her brilliance and experience in life, she has all the resources and capacity to deal with the stress.”
What Montgomery and his team have learned in the previous 11 seasons are the kind of mistakes that would make for a great blooper real. “What we will never do again is have dogs at the mat. We’ve learned that dogs, they don’t care that you’re shooting a show and that we need silence,” says Montgomery. “Animals are a popular prop for challenges, but not as greeters. They suck. Oh, and don’t get your hair cut by a barber that you randomly met, right before you go for fittins for press. I’ve done it twice now. Season one, I showed up basically bald and the producers were like, ‘Oh dear, what’d you do?’ And inevitably I get crispified on dy one and they have to mute Ginger Jon’s lava forehead.” Montgomery’s relatability likely plays a part in the show’s continued popularity — a quality he believes remains part of the show’s secret sauce. “We can’t all see ourselves on every television program out there,” he says. “I wouldn’t be able to carry a tune in a bucket, so Canadian Idol is out for me. Two left feet, so no So You Think You Can Dance Canada for Jon. But I have a desire to travel Canada. Easy. Who doesn’t? I like challenges. I like doing inherently safe things but see where I stack up against this cast of characters. And the third prerequisite to be on The Amazing Race Canada is you need a relatively clean criminal record. And, by golly, two out of three ain’t bad.”
The places and spaces, they’re all fresh and new. The teams are all fresh and new and getting to know each of them individually and as teams is all fresh and new.”
The Amazing Race Canada appeals to Jon Montgomery’s sense of adventure and thirst for travel.
A BIGGER BANG

Stuart

Stuart Fails to Save the Universe
THURSDAY, 8 P.M., CRAVE1
IN THE WORLD OF TELEVISION, it’s no secret that success begets spinoffs. Back in the day, Happy Days spawned Laverne & Shirley, Mork & Mindy and a few others nobody remembers. More recently, Taylor Sheridan continues to expand the world of Yellowstone with Marshals and Dutton Ranch.
The Big Bang Theory, which ran for 12 seasons between 2007 and 2019, has likewise spun off, with now-gone Young Sheldon providing a platform for the still-ongoing Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage.
This summer brought another entry into the Big Bang universe, and it’s a weird one: Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, focusing on comic book store owner Stuart Bloom, with Kevin Sussman reprising his role from the original series. Per the official lline, Stuart “is tasked with restoring reality after he breaks a device built by Sheldon and Leonard, accidentally bringing about a multiverse Armageddon. Stuart is aided in this quest by his girlfriend Denise (Lauren Lapkus), geologist friend Bert (Brian Posehn) and quantum physicist/allaround pain in the ass Barry Kripke (John Ross Bowie). Along the way, they meet alternate-universe versions of characters we’ve come to know and love from The Big Bang Theory. As the title implies, things don’t go well.”
As for those “alternate-universe” iterations of the original show’s cast, producers are trying to keep a lid on info leaking out (although TV Week can confirm tht fans will not be disappointed).
The idea for the unconventional spinoff cam, as did the original series,
‘‘
I’ve always wanted to work in a bigger genre than what we were doing in front of an audience.”
from the fertile mind of sitcom guru Chuck Lorre
“I had this idea that Stuart, in the comic book store, there was a portal in the back room to other universes,” Lorre explained. “And I’ve always wanted to work in a bigger genre than what we were doing in front of a studio audience. I loved what we did in front of an audience, but the idea of working with visual effects and computer graphics and all the things that you can do. Now, if you can imagine it now, you can do it in film. And Ive been a longtime fan of Mr. Sussman and I just thought he’d be the perfect lead for this kind of a comedy. As far as the melding of it with comedy is concerned, something’s funny or it’s not. And all the special effects and computer graphics cannot make something that’s not funny, funny. So, we just had to remain honest with ourselves as we wrote these things that we were telling the truth. We think this is truly funny . . . And so that’s how the two genres come together.”
Interestingly, Lorre had been kicking that idea around for some time, fist introducing the idea to
The CalTech nemesis of Leonard and Sheldon, Barry Kripke is reprised by actor John Ross Bowie.

Sussman way back in 2020. However, he didn’t want to rush it, and wanted to put some space between this new concept and The Big Bang Theory “I never gave up on the idea, but I didn’t know how to pursue it until it became, you know, somebody stepped up and said, this isn’t horrible, proceed,” Lorre quips.
For the series’ star, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe has been unlike any project he’d worked on before. “Nothing could help prepare for this role,” says Sussman, admitting he was still shocked that Lorre thought of him for the lead in a big-budget TV series. “He had seen me for various other roles, but that was just a weird coincidence. It was just my day job when I was an actor because I couldn’t get a waiter job because no one would believe, no one could convincingly think I could carry dishes around.”
Enlisting Lapkus to join the show made perfect sense, considering that her character and Sussman’s had finally hooed up by the end of The Big Bang Theory.
“Stuart has this new relationship, this good relationship, and it was really exciting,” Sussman explains. “And then, of course, the show stopped, and it’s like, ‘That’s so Stuart.’ Finally in a relationship.”
For her part, Lapkus loved the challenge of reprising Denise as not just one character, but different versions. This, she adds, “was also very cool . . . like, in the fist episode you find me in the post-apocalyptic world. But then in the second episode I’ve been living in the sort of fake happy [place]. And then I’m breaking out of that. So the levels to each character are really fun to explore.”
Reviving the reviled Barry Kripke has been a gift for Bowie, who explains that the show combines
“the mundane and the miraculous” in the characters’ multiverse exploits.
“There’s a contrast that runs through a lot of the episodes where crazy things are going on, but we still have our weird little petty grievances,” he says. “And when Kevin comes out in the fist episodes onto the apocalyptic wasteland and asks how it is out there, and Brian’s fist answer is, ‘It’s chilly. Wear layers.’ That was the moment, and this says something, because I hadn’t even shown up in the script yet and I laughed out loud . . . Giving these life-and-death stakes to these comedic characters is really fun to play.”
Of course, the obvious question that arises is: what would Big Bang Theory protagonists Leonard (Johnny Galecki) and Sheldon (Jim Parsons) think of Stuart Fails to Save the Universe?
“They would argue about it,” says series co-creator Bill Prady. “We talked about this. This is the kind of show that they would watch and argue about. I think they would like the science fiction puzzle aspect of it. They would probably focus on the mythology of it. Leonard and Sheldon . . . they would pick it apart.”
At the centre of all the action is the malfunctioning device created by Big Bang Theory main characters Leonard and Sheldon.

HOWIE MANDEL NEVER TIRES of being on the move. Between America’s Got Talent, The Price Is Right Canada, his podcast Howie Mandel Does Stuff and standup shows, the Canadian comedian rarely sits still. But believe it or not, life is actually calmer for Mandel than it used to be. “I’m moving around less,” he tells TV Week, while in Toronto for mere hours. “For 30-some years I was doing 300 live dates a year. I still do maybe 60 live dates a year. Standup is my favourite thing to do, but I only have time for about 60 cities because of AGT, Price Is Right and whatever else I do.” With the hours he has to spare, Mandel has added Netflixs Best Guess Live to his agenda, a real-time online gaming competition played via Netflixs game section. TV Week caught up with Mandel about his busy life and why he never says “no” to anything.
When you were a young Canadian, was this how you envisioned your career? What did you think life was going to look like?
I don’t know what tomorrow looks like. I’ve never had visions of anything. I just kind of go with the flw. Whatever happens, happens. I got up at Yuk Yuk’s on a dare without the aspiration to be in show business or be a comedian. Then I was a comedian and got some television exposure in the States, then got more jobs and an HBO special and ended up on a dramatic show in the ’80s called St. Elsewhere, where Denzel Washington started out. I didn’t think of being a game show host before my wife told me to do Deal or No Deal and that turned into something. I didn’t know what judging a variety show was like and then I got AGT. I don’t want to envision anything. If you envision something, then you’re aware that you’re not there. I just enjoy every moment now and always have. No regrets about the past and no aspirations about the future.
I look at your career and think of it as intentionally diversifying, but you’re telling me that you don’t. I don’t say “No,” is the method to my madness. I think people overthink life. Opportunities are there for absolutely

everyone. And you can think about why you shouldn’t make this left or right turn because so many negatives could happen or you’re on a path and you don’t want to mess up this path that you’re on. But I don’t even think about that. If there’s a moment in the day and they say, “Can you come over here and do this?” I go, “OK. If I’m not doing anything at this moment, there’s no reason not to.” And I’ll be honest, I have many more failures than successes and continue to have many more failures than successes. I’m always trying and doing things.
How did Best Guess Live come your way?
Best Guess Live came my way because I’m a big fan of gaming. I used to play HQ. It no longer exists, but every day at a certain time for 15 minutes on your phone, you could play and win money and get everybody in the office together and say, “Oh, let’s guess what this is.” And then Netflix came up with Best Guess Live and they ended up running it out of my studio space. I saw that they were doing it and I said, “Can I come over?” I love this game, so when I’m in town, I just walk over and

host it and it’s so much fun. They don’t tell me the answer, so, I’m playing along. I’m also seeing the answers on the board, as they come in. Sometimes they’re ridiculous. It’s just this live 15 minutes of group play that is a little escape from the drudgery of a normal day.
Why did The Price Is Right Canada feel like a good fit for yo? I got asked and it’s Toronto. They just called me and said they want to do a primetime version. It’s kind of a little shinier and wilder than the traditional format, and it’s in my home. So what an opportunity to come here to see my family and have fun playing a game.
What makes it flashier and more fun than the daytime show? Well, they let me break some rules and give away things to audience members, play a little bit crazier,
and make decisions on the spot. And the prizes are huge — hundreds of thousands of dollars. Sometimes the door opens and where you normally see a car, you’ll see two cars just because it’s fun to shake it up. They just let me go and do what I want and it’s fun. I’m having the time of my life.
Standup is something that you hone over and over and over again. How much do you love just reacting on the spot? Where you don’t know what’s coming. That’s why I like it. When you’re on a game show like this, I have no idea what somebody’s going to do, how they’re going to react, what they’re going to say, what’s going to happen. And it’s shockingly emotional and fun where somebody wins two cars or they’re just starting their life, or they got a free trip or $100,000, and

life has changed forever. It’s just so exciting. That’s what I like about AGT too. You watch somebody show up on that stage and I’m standing 10 feet from somebody whose life, hopes and dreams could come true and their life changes forever.
What’s the impact of your standup?
There’s nothing more raw and inhibiting than your own sensibility and sense of humour. And when you can click with a bunch of strangers and connect . . . there’s nothing harder to elicit. It’s really easy to elicit silence and somebody listening to you while you’re playing a song. And then at the end of the song, when it’s obviously over, they applaud because that’s what you’re supposed to do. But to get a bunch of strangers to connect every 30 seconds with laughter is so fulfilling and so connective. It’s amazing. In a positive way, it’s like a thrill ride. That’s why I like roller coasters. Roller coasters are terrifying, and it scares you and you’re screaming, and it’s just thrilling. Even doing my podcast, Howie Mandel Does Stuff, it’s me and my daughter sitting there. We don’t plan, we don’t produce. People show up and they talk to us. I like surrounding myself without a plan.
No parameters?
The fist part of my life was really tough because I have a problem with structure. This is perfect for me. I don’t like structure. I fiht it and my life doesn’t really have structure, though it seems very structured. I mean, the fist thing you asked me about was a schedule. I don’t even know my schedule and I don’t want to know my schedule. I have people around me who say, “You’ve got to be somewhere at nine.” And I go, “OK.” Then I get in the car and they tell me what I’m going to do that day.
This year, Howie Mandel added The Price Is Right Canada to his already jampacked schedule.

According to Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige, this marks a shift in how Spidey has been depicted within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. “It is the first Spider-Man film that ’ve made in the MCU that is focused on the classic elements of Spider-Man,” Feige explained in a recent interview with Empire. “He’s doing the Spidey thing of living in a rather sad, small apartment, listening to the police scanner and going out and using his great power responsibly.”

Q One of the intriguing elements of this story is that Hollis is very much a Type A personality. She likes plans and schedules and control. But grieving this kind of loss is, in many ways, about surrendering control. Was that internal push-and-pull part of what attracted you to the character?
A That’s a great observation. And I would agree with you. Hollis is trying to distract herself. She’s trying to put grief on a shelf and not look at it, and distract herself by making things pretty — by the perfect gift basket, by curating this gorgeous weekend for friends. And they point out to her, as your old friends will, “Hollis, this doesn’t make any sense.” But really, there is no “sense.” There is no “right way” to grieve. She’s allowed to do that, if that’s what she needs to do. And ultimately, it’s gonna come out — and it does.
Q On that note, the show is also a study of friendship — of the people in your life who can call you on your B.S. in a way that no one else can, and

the complicated relationships we have with “old friends.” There’s a lot of compelling territory to be explored there . . .
A Oh, yes. Absolutely. I’ve tried to develop shows about female friendship before, and they’re just really hard to get right. In this case, Bekah Brunstetter, our showrunner, nailed what Elin Hilderbrand in the original novel started off so beautifully by writing fie characters who are so different, who are so richly drawn. Everybody has a triumphant moment. Everyone has a secret. Everyone has lows and highs, and everything in between. They all have history with each other, with Hollis . . . And all of those complexities — they make room for all of them somehow in these eight episodes. Because of that, we got this kind
I think it’s the messiness of life juxtaposed against someone whose cookies are completely uniform and whose dress somehow never wrinkles. That’s what’s interesting about it, is that Hollis is trying to look away from the messiness and to cover it up . . . but you can’t. You can’t escape it. It’s there.”
of crazy cast that was such a joy to be part of . . .
Q
The Five-Star Weekend
That cast is absolutely fantastic. For you — being not only a member of the ensemble, but an executive producer — what was the process like of finding the exac right combination of actors to bounce off of on another over the course of this “five-sta weekend?”

I can’t even tell you. It was kind of like a dream. They would tell me they were going for Gemma Chan. She was the second person hired. And I felt like, “No way is Gemma gonna do this! That’s never gonna happen. How embarrassing. We’re gonna get passed on 500 times if they’re going for, like, Gemma Chan.” But then, again and again, it was like, “Really? She’s gonna do it!?”
And my estimation of what this [show] could possibly become grew with every casting. Chloë and I have circled each other for 30 years, and we had never met. None of us had ever met each other. So, to suddenly be working with Chloë Sevigny after all this time . . . I was nervous, you know? And I just absolutely love our scenes — and love her.
Q One person you had crossed paths with professionally is Timothy Olyphant. The two of you starred in Catch and Release 20 years ago. As an exec producer, it was really nice of you to pull a few strings and get him a job . . .
A [Laughs] Poor guy . . .
Q I mean, the years have not been kind to him. He’s lost his good looks, his career is just in shambles . . .
A I know! Where did those good looks go!? . . . Timothy is just such a magnetic personality. He comes onto set, all the crew lights up when Tim shows up. He remembers them from different jobs. He starts just teasing everyone . . . teasing me . He has no problem putting me in my place. In the most gentle way, he knows how to bring a set to life.
Q It’s also interesting that Catch and Release was a film that also saw you two exploring a potential romance in the wake of your character grieving a lifechanging personal loss . . .
A I know! You’re the fist person to mention that in this whole junket. And I keep thinking, “Ummm, hello? Is anyone going to point out the very obvious parallel?” But I’m kind of surprised. I had no idea that Catch and Release had
CURRENT GIG
Based on the 2023 novel by Elin Hilderbrand (the author behind Netflix murder mystery The Perfect Couple), eight-part dramedy The Five-Star Weekend casts Jennifer Garner as Hollis Shaw, a celebrity foodie grieving the death of her estranged husband. Amidst the ennui, she decides to organize a getaway to Nantucket with four friends from different phases of her life: childhood pal Tatum (Boys Don’t Cry Oscar nominee Chloë Sevigny), college pal Dru-Ann (Scary Movie’s Regina Hall), mom-era pal Brooke (The Good Place’s D’Arcy Carden) and mysterious fan-turned-friend Gigi (Crazy Rich Asians’ Gemma Chan). Also unexpectedly along for the ride: her college-age daughter Caroline (newcomer Harlow Jane) and her high school sweetheart Jack (Justifie ’s Timothy Olyphant). Bonding, fighting, rekindling and a shocking reveal or two ensue.
the audience that it has. Because I’m hearing from them now. They are really happy to see us together, and I’m thrilled.
Q Beyond unpacking grief, Hollis and every other person invited (and not-so-invited) on this getaway are grappling with some sort of personal trauma or catastrophe. Is it fair to say that both Elin’s novel and this adaptation are delving into the general messiness of life?
A I would absolutely say that’s true. I think it’s the messiness of life juxtaposed against someone whose cookies are completely uniform and whose dress somehow never wrinkles. That’s what’s interesting about it, is that Hollis is trying to look away from the messiness and to cover it up . . . but you can’t. You can’t escape it. It’s there.
QI’ve also read that you, Jennifer, are something of a foodie and a cooking fan yourself. How does your relationship with the kitchen compare to Hollis’?
MEMORABLE ROLES
From 2001-2006, Ms. Garner was best known to audiences as college student turned secret agent Sydney Bristow on ABC thriller Alias — a breakout part that required a rare combination of vulnerability, sexuality and action-heroism. Across five seasons, the exas native nabbed four Emmy noms and one Golden Globe win.
She swiftly parlayed that success into movie stardom, lighting up the screen in beloved fantasy rom-com 13 Going on 30. She also played super-antihero Elektra in 2003’s Daredevil (co-starring alongside future husband Ben Affle ), before taking the spotlight solo with 2005 spinoff Elektra — eventually reprising the part in 2024 smashhit Deadpool & Wolverine. Other buzzy flicks includ Juno, Dallas Buyers Club and Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. Meanwhile, in recent years, the actress has gotten in on the movie-stars-comin’to-TV trend with series like HBO family-vacay dramedy Camping and Apple thriller The Last Thing He Told Me.
Nothing makes me happier, truly, than my kids requesting something on a weekend. Nothing makes me happier, truly, than my kids requesting something on a weekend. Sometimes I’ll spend the whole weekend in the kitchen — and I love it because I know that they feel like there’s something they want that’s gonna be comforting to them that I can make them. Q OK, that’s my time. Thank you very much for yours, and best of luck with the show. I quite enjoyed it.
A I’m so happy that you did. And guess what? I’m going to Saskatchewan soon. And I went to Yellowknife this year. So, I’m discovering new parts of Canada this year . . . just so you know.
Q Well, we’re happy to have you . . . anytime.
A [Laughs] Thank you!
The powerhouse of energy and life-long vibrancy
What are mitochondria, and how do we spark them?
They are like very tiny powerplants that produce energy in every living cell of our bodies. On average, every cell has 1,500 mitochondria. Can you imagine that for their extremely small size, it’s been said that they produce, gram for gram, 10,000–50,000 times more energy than the sun?
To say that mitochondria are important to human health is grossly understating their role in our
survival. We literally would not be alive without them. They convert our food into energy, so that every other function of our body can occur as it needs to. As we age, our ability to create healthy mitochondria to support our energy demands diminishes. And because about 90% of our cellular energy is produced by mitochondria, this decline can cause significant health issues
