MALCOLM & FAMILY RETURN FOR A REVIVAL
Making its debut in 2000, Malcolm in the Middle ran for seven successful seasons before ending in 2006. Twenty years later, the dysfunctional sitcom family is reuniting for a four-episode revival. Reboots have been all the rage lately (Scrubs, another sitcom from that same era, recently returned), yet they also present the risk of tarnishing the legacy of shows that have remained fondly remembered by fans.
Life’s Still Unfair, however, avoids that trap by focusing on grownup Malcolm and his daughter Leah (Keeley Karsten), whose ordered lives are thrown into chaos when they’re enlisted to help his parents, Hal and Lois (Bryan Cranston and Jane Kaczmarek), throw a shindig celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary.
The past two decades have brought some big changes for the series’ cast, all of whom are returning except Erik Per Sullivan, who played youngest brother Dewey (Sullivan retired from acting, and the role has been recast with Caleb Ellsworth-Clark). Cranston, of course, was best known as doofus dad Hal before becoming one of Hollywood’s most respected dramatic actors, thanks to his harrowing performance on Breaking Bad. Then, of course, there’s star Frankie Muniz, who walked away from Hollywood to become a professional NASCAR driver. Understandably, Muniz felt some trepidation about returning. “When I was doing Malcolm 20 years ago, I was a kid,” he told People. “I was, like, 13 to 20 when I was on the show and I just kind of showed up and was excited to be there and said the words that were on the paper, and it worked. As an adult, you tend to overthink things . . . and you put more pressure on yourself, as well. So, I didn’t know what it was gonna be like — if it was going to be easy to be Malcolm, if it was gonna be awkward back with the cast. And not to sound cliché, but it was as if not a single day went by. All of us — every single person — instantly fell back into their characters [from] the fist table read.”

Alex isn’t handling the situation well, but discovers both acceptance and catharsis in standup comedy when he spontaneously takes to the stage of NYC’s famed Comedy Cellar as an open-mic performance. With the support of his best friend Balls (played by Cooper), an actor perpetually on the cusp of his big break, Alex discovers his new voice in the world of comedy.

Featured in 1999’s The Phantom Menace and 2018’s Solo: A Star Wars Story, villainous Darth Maul has become one of the more popular yet enigmatic villains from the Star Wars franchise. The Sith Lord’s story is expanded in this new animated series, set in the period following the events of another animated series, The Clone Wars. "Maul plots to rebuild his criminal syndicate on a planet untouched by the Empire,” notes the Disney+ logline for the series. “There, he crosses paths with a disillusioned young Jedi Padawan, who could be the apprentice he is seeking, that will aid him in his relentless pursuit for revenge.” Featuring Sam Witwer as the voice of Maul, the voice cast also includes Wagner Moura, Chris Diamantopoulos and Dennis Haysbert.

ACCESS DENIED?
I heard they cancelled Access Hollywood, but I’m still seeing new episodes. What’s the deal?

Alas, rumours of Access Hollywood’s demise have not been exaggerated (or, at least, have been only slightly exaggerated). Citing changes to its first-run syndication business mode and the evolving programming needs of local stations, NBCUniversal has opted to cancel the nightly entertainment news program, which has been on the air since 1996. That said, the series will continue through the summer before turning out the lights. Per The Hollywood Reporter, it was one of numerous cancellations along with Access Daily (which will also continue into the summer), Karamo and The Steve Wilkos Show. Eulogizing the programs in an official statement, NB executive Frances Berwick said: “These shows have provided audiences with great talk and entertainment content for many years and we’re very proud of the teams behind them.”
The Next Task at Hand?
Are they doing another season of the show Task? It seemed to wrap up pretty nice and neatly (and bloody!) by the end. But then, so did Big Little Lies , and they still did more of that one.

As previously reported, the Mark Ruffal -led crime drama was conceived as a one-anddone limited series — but after the massive acclaim and viewership upon its debut in September, HBO became intrigued by the possibility of another chapter.
Per Deadline, Ruffalo an creator Brad Ingelsby had actually begun talks about continuing the saga of FBI task force leader Tom Brandis while filming season on, believing “there was still more to explore with his character.”
Of course, the first season killed off most of the shows cast, leaving Ruffalo short on scene partners. But HBO has remedied that problem, tapping two-time Oscar winner Mahershala Ali to step in for Tom Pelphrey’s robberwith-a-heart-of-gold Robbie Prendergrast as Agent Brandis’ next antagonist. But rather than a crook, he’ll play a fellow lawman — a respected DEA agent who clashes with Brandis and his new team. As Deadline furthermore teases of Brandis’ new case: “the deeper the operation runs, the harder it is to tell who’s the target.”
Look for it to premiere in late 2026 or early 2027.
Hunky Access Hollywood host Mario Lopez will be on the lookout for a new gig, as the venerable entertainment news/celebrity chat program is slated to end this summer.

I was a big fan of Police Woman back in the day, and I have a vague recollection of the great Betty White having starred in that series, too. Do I have that right?

From 1974 to 1978, audiences thrilled to the heroics of Angie Dickinson (in those days married to legendary composer Burt Bacharach) as undercover L.A. cop Pepper Anderson, pride of the Criminal Conspiracy Unit.
Betty White was never on that show, but during the run of Police Woman, which aired on NBC, a one-season wonder called The Betty White Show appeared on rival network CBS, in 1977. It was a sort of meta, show-withina-show affair where Whit’s character, Joyce Whitman, was the principal on a dreadful cop show called Undercover Woman (a not-so-subtle dig at their NBC counterpart). Worse yet, the director was her character’s exhusband John Elliot (played by John
well as Krapopolis, which was renewed through the 2028-2029 season, and old stalwarts like The Simpsons, Bob’s Burgers, American Dad! and Family Guy — all also safe through 2029.
On the subject of Family Guy, creator Seth MacFarlane will soon add another entry to his Fox repertory, having inked a deal for a two-season spinoff centred on FG’s nefarious baby genius, Stewie Griffi Expected to debut in 2027-2028, the summary reads as follows (per Variety): “After getting the boot from
Hillerman, who would soon move on to the role of Higgins in Magnum, P.I.). Meanwhile, Joyce’s roommate was Mitzi Maloney (Georgia Engel), who had been Georgette on The Mary Tyler Moore Show. That show’s key creative brain and longtime producer was Ed. Weinberger, who plucked both White and Engel for the cast of the new series when The Mary Tyler Moore Show wrapped in 1977.
Unfortunately, despite all the talent at the table, The Betty White Show just didn’t work and it was cancelled for low ratings after a single, 14-episode season. Seven years later, Betty White was back on top as one of The Golden Girls, leaving her crime-fighting day forever in the past.
his old preschool, Stewie is forced to enrol in a new one that’s not exactly top-of-theline. It’s attended by a handful of kids he doesn’t know, and a 75-year-old class turtle with a half-cocked theory on just about every subject. Stewie’s miserable, the other kids are miserable and even the turtle is miserable . . . until Stewie begins rolling out his trusty array of devices to take them anywhere in space and time, turning every boring day at school into an insane and surreal adventure.” (But don’t worry, the li’l hellion is expected to continue pulling
double-duty on Family Guy.)
As you’d imagine, MacFarlane remains the voice of Stewie. He also co-created the show with frequent collaborator Kirker Butler, who enthused in a statement: “I am honoured and humbled that Seth, 20th Television Animation and Fox have trusted me with one of the most iconic animated characters in the history of television. I have known Seth for more than two decades, worked with him on half a dozen projects, and I am hopeful this is the one where he finally learns my nam.”

All Suped Up!
Billy Butcher’s vengeful campaign to take down the corrupt superheroes of the world reaches its end game with this fifth and fina season. The twist, of course, is that Billy himself is now also a “supe.”
And his “scorched earth” campaign now involves not only exposing the sins of The Seven, but releasing a virus that will wipe out any and all superpowered beings. Meanwhile, Annie/Starlight continues her less extreme plan of gathering fellow rebels and mounting an insurgency against Homelander. While their methods fall on opposite ends of the sanity spectrum, by the time all’s said, done and dusted, Butcher, Annie and the rest of the Boys may need to join forces if they have any hope of stopping the more-megalomaniacal-thanever Homelander, who’s installed himself as the dictator-in-chief of the United States — and is not only snuffing out all dissents,

but is on a quest for immortality. As part of that quest, he wakes up his “father,” original supe Soldier Boy, played by Jensen Ackles — returning as a series regular after spending season four on ice.
That’s no doubt a major boon for fans. Even better? Ackles and creator Eric Kripke are staging a reunion with their former Supernatural co-workers Jared Padalecki and Misha Collins, who will drop by in episode fie to play a pair of characters Kripke teased to Entertainment Weekly as “douchebags.”
This farewell season is not the end for the Boys universe . . . nor for Ackles, who will soon team up with former co-star Aya Cash (a.k.a. Stormfront) for a 1950s-set prequel called Vought Rising
THE COP VS. THE KILLER
Leaphorn, Chee and Manuelito’s foray into the Los Angeles underworld wraps with a life-and-death standoff between eaphorn and Vaggan — the ruthless assassin who’s become obsessed with our stalwart cop. At stake? The fates of both Leaphorn and teen runaway Billie. The show has already been renewed for season fiv, which is slated to air in 2027.

Airing on Easter Sunday, this final, two hour chapter of the three-week biblical event series follows sisters Leah (Millie Brady) and Rachel (Blu Hunt), who both fall for the same man, Jacob (Tom Payne). What results is a harrowing act of betrayal, but also a steadfast commitment to seeing God’s will be done.

A year after The Handmaid’s Tale wrapped its six-season run, showrunner Bruce Miller takes audiences right back to Gilead with a follow-up that’s set years after June (Elisabeth Moss) took those first bold steps toward toppling her oppressors Alas, while the patriarchy may have been dealt a blow, it is far from toppled. The Testaments is set at an elite school for the daughters of prominent Commanders — training these so-called “Plums” in how to become the future wives of other Commanders. One Battle After Another standout Chase Infiniti stars as Agnes, a promising young ingénue who begins to realize the horrors of the institution she’s been born into. Lucy Halliday plays Daisy, a Canadian teen with a secret family connection to Gilead. And returning from the original series is the great Ann Dowd as Aunt Lydia, headmistress of the academy, who continues her journey from regime hardliner to reformer . . . and, maybe one day, full-on rebel. The new series is based on Margaret Atwood’s 2019 Booker Prize-winning novel of the same name. Speaking with Oprah Daily upon the novel’s release, Atwood explained: “I wanted to explore the beginning of the end of Gilead. As Churchill said: ‘It is not the end, and it is not even the beginning of the end, but it is the end of the beginning’ . . . so, I wanted to explore the end of the beginning and the beginning of the end. How did these things fall apart? That idea fascinated me.”

he creative force behind Schitt’s Creek , every project Dan Levy has taken on since that little Canadian show-that-could has been met with great anticipation. This eight-part comedic thriller is no exception.
Big Mistakes finds evy once again serving as both star and showrunner — and once again he’s probing the absurdis depths of a family that’s anything but functional.
Most of the details are still under wraps, but we do know that Levy plays a preacher who reluctantly teams up with his sister (Kim Possible’s Taylor Ortega) after they’re blackmailed into pulling off a diamond heist by nefarious
forces from the world of organized crime.
On Schitt’s Creek, Levy, of course, had one of the all-timegreat TV moms in the form of the late Catherine O’Hara. Those are no easy heels to fill, but e’d say he’s managed to find the perfect fit, as ompleting this quirky little clan is three-time Emmy winner Laurie Metcalf. Teasing the show in an interview with Tudum, Levy beamed: “I’m so excited to

Having proven his comedy chops in early projects like the Bill & Ted flics and last year’s Good Fortune, Canadian treasure Keanu Reeves takes another break from kicking butt as John Wick to deliver us a few chuckles.
In a new film from director Jonah Hill, Reeves plays Reef Hawk, a Hollywood star who suddenly finds himself xtorted by an unknown enemy who presents him with an illicitly shot video Reef definitely does’t want to be starring in. Knowing his career will be over if it ever gets out, the actor racks his brain and comes up with an enemies list, setting out to make amends with as many people he may have wronged as possible. Joining our hero on this redemptive quest is a star-studded ensemble including Cameron Diaz and Matt Bomer as his lifelong best pals, and Hill himself as his “crisis lawyer.”
As Apple’s synopsis teases: “Co-writer and director Hill brings a unique lens to Reef’s wild but spiritually cleansing, nostalgic and eye-opening trip down memory lane, where confronting his past might be the only way to rescue his future.”

When last e saw comic Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) and her young writer Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder), they were languishing in showbiz purgatory after Deb gave up the late-night show she’d worked so very long and hard for when she was ordered to fie Ava. Having signed a non-compete, she was reduced to performing standup in Singapore, and both women seemed resigned to their fates . . . until an erroneous news report about her death lit a fie under our jaded protagonist, and sent both women charging back to Las Vegas. Now, as the new season’s logline puts it, they’re “more determined than ever to secure Deborah’s legacy as a comedian.”
How exactly they might pull that off, given the

catastrophic events that capped off last season remains to be seen.
All told, it’s been a volatile yet inspiring ride for these two women, as their undeniable love for one another was frequently undermined by their own ego, ambition and neuroses. Regardless of where their dreams of stardom end up, we can only hope their friendship remains intact.
No doubt, there are many fans who would love to see their misadventures continue, yet as Einbinder told Variety last year: “I think the original plan was that [co-creators Jen Statsky, Lucia Aniello and Paul W. Downs] saw a fie-season arc in their initial pitch for the show . . . Knowing it’s the last season is really bittersweet. But I think it’s right, you know? It’s nice to do something as many times as it should be done. Not overstay your welcome. Rip it and do it and laugh and cry.”
Colourful Observations
Sheng Wang returns to the stage with a special that riffs on such peculiaritie rattling around inside his brain as “edible bras, braving the ghosts in your house and guarding expensive berries from your friends’ kids.” This new hour was filmed at the arner Theatre in Washington, D.C. — and the person guiding the cameras as director was none other than Wang’s fellow standup comic Ali Wong, best known for a host of hit Netflix specials of her own and as the Emmy-winnin star of Beef

A I think this year we get to see a lot more personal story things that are going on in my real life. I’m really excited about that, because last year I didn’t get to connect with the audience as much. This season is completely different. People get to see much more of a peek into my life. But obviously, things are crazy. I don’t work at Republic anymore. I’m focusing fully on my company — event planning. But I’m still definitel attached to everyone in the group.
Q As much as losing your job is a crisis moment for anyone, does it feel now like an opportunity to pursue what you really want to be doing?
A A hundred per cent. I’ve always thought of it as a good thing — just the reasoning behind it was more personal. It was never actually about being fired. It was the personal circumstances around the firing, because at the end of the day I was working a full 40-hour week at my full-time job, plus events . . . that’s probably about 60 a week. I was going a little crazy, I’m not gonna lie. Having that work structure, I was not able to really be the best that I could be at either job. So, it was a blessing in disguise to be able to focus on something I want for my career and my future.
Q How has the reality TV experience lived up to the expectations you had going in? Any big surprises you encountered?
A I don’t think anything in life is ever what I think it’s gonna be! But I’ve been a longtime fan of reality TV and television in general. I was a theatre kid growing up, so it’s just been really interesting to see that part of a TV world.
And it’s definitely lived up to my expectations. I’ve had such a great time. I love that our show is about as real as it can be. That’s been fun, because I have heard other things about other shows — but our show, it’s just been such a great experience and really true to each character, I think.
Q How does your setting — the city of Charleston, South Carolina, itself — feed the appeal of the series?
A The viewers of other shows in Charleston see a completely different approach to the city. On other shows that are based here, I think it glamorizes Charleston . . . and our show gives you the nitty-gritty, real part of Charleston.
Not that it’s not “real” for the other ones, it just kind of gives you a different point of view — which I like, because it showcases what it’s like to be in your mid-20s here instead of being performative a little bit. It just really stays true to Charleston.

IT WAS JUST OVER A YEAR ago that Netflix announed plans to revive one of the cartoon world’s most enduring franchises, a new live-action Scooby-Doo series that would delve into the gang’s origin story.
Now, more news is emerging about this as-yet-untitled series — which will uncover how the mystery-solving crew and their beloved dog fist teamed up to crack the haunting case that started it all — as casting begins to firm u.
Tanner Hagen as Shaggy, Abby Ryder Fortson as Velma and Maxwell Jenkins as Fred.
With Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg tapped as showrunners (via their Midnight Radio production compay), the series’ executive producers are Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Leigh London Redman, André Nemec, Jeff Pinkner, Adrienne Erickson and Toby Haynes.
Scooby Gang Cast
Described as “a modern reimagining of the iconic mystery-solving group of teens and their very special dog,” the series is set at a summer camp, where old friends Shaggy and Daphne become embroiled in a haunting mystery surrounding a lonely lost Great Dane puppy that may have been a witness to a supernatural murder. “Together with the pragmatic and scientific townie, Velma, and the strange, but ever so handsome new kid, Freddy, they set out to solve the case that is pulling each of them into a creepy nightmare that threatens to expose all of their secrets,” the synopsis adds.
The cast will include: Mckenna Grace as Daphne,
“One of my fist and favourite jobs in Hollywood was sitting with Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera while they signed animation cels,” Berlanti recalled in an interview with Tudum.
“Josh and Scott and everyone at Midnight Radio have crafted a story that captures their amazing spirits and their genius creation. We are grateful to them and everyone at Warner and Netflix for the partnership in helping bring this iteration of ScoobyDoo to life!”
First introduced as a Saturday-morning cartoon in 1969 with Scooby-Doo: Where Are You? the franchise has to date encapsulated three theatrical films, moe than a dozen animated series and nearly 40 animated home-video releases.

A REAL ENIGMA
Way back in January 2025, Netflix announced plans for The Enigma Variations, a limited series based on the acclaimed novel of the same name by Call Me By Your Name author André Aciman, with The Bear’s Jeremy Allen White onboard as star and executive producer.
Those plans hit a major snag in late 2025, when White exited the project. However, the streamer has announced that The Enigma Variations is back on track, with Aaron TaylorJohnson (28 Years Later, Kraven the Hunter) now cast in the leading role vacated by White.
Taylor-Johnson will play Paul, “a man remade by the lovers who ignite and undo him over the course of 10 transformative years,” the show’s logline reads. “It’s an intimate yet sweeping portrait of masculinity, sexuality and modern love — and in a world of endless choices, it asks the question: Will we know when we’ve found the one?”
The limited series will be executive produced and written by A.K. Shuman (The Wheel of Time,

Carrie Soto Is Back) and directed by Oliver Hermanus (The History of Sound, Living).
The storyline takes place in locales including Italy, New York and New England, while Aciman’s book was hailed a “magnificent, living thing” by The New York Times Book Review’s Paul Lisicky. “Aciman writes arousal so beautifully you miss it when it’s gone,” wrote Lisicky in his review. Added The Boston Globe’s Michael Upchurch, “Is there any writer out there who can conjure the seismic swings and loop-the-loop giddiness of sexual infatuation the way that André Aciman can?”
The Enigma Variations marks the first TV role for Taylor-Johnson in nearly two decades, having focused exclusively on film ever since his breakout role as a young John Lennon in 2009 feature Nowhere Boy. However, he started his career in television in his native Britain while still a teenager, appearing in such series as The Bill, Family Business, Feather Boy, Nearly Famous, Coming Up and others.
With NBC leading the way in reviving the presumed-dead practice of pilot season, the network has finally cast all of the eight pilots under consideration for the upcoming 2026-’27 TV season.
The final pilot to be cast is What the Dead Know, a procedural crime drama from exec producer Dick Wolf, whose vast roster of TV credits include the Law & Order, Chicago One and FBI franchises. The potential new series is based on the memoir of the same name by former New York City medical examiner Barbara Butscher, and is being written and executive produced by Beth Rinehart (FBI: Most Wanted).
Taylor Schilling (Orange Is the New Black) has been cast in the leading role of investigator Ava Ledger, who “feels
more at ease searching for cause-ofdeath than socializing with the living,” according to the character description. That intense focus on forensics is echoed in NBC’s official logline for th project, which reads: “Death investigator Ava Ledger (Schilling) is really good with dead bodies. It’s the living that give her trouble. What the Dead Know follows Ava as she teams with the NYPD to solve their toughest cases.”
Schilling is best known for her Emmy-nominated performance as Piper Chapman in Netflixs Orange Is the New Black, on which she starred for seven seasons. She recently appeared in a guest role in the second season of Poker Face, in addition to appearing in Fox’s Accused and Apple TV’s Dear Edward

Patrick J. Adams breaks down Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan’s latest — a tender yet rugged exploration of redefiing yourself in the wake of profound trauma
WHEN THE CLYBURN family experiences a life-altering loss, the New Yorkers travel to southwest Montana prepared to tie up loose ends, both literally and emotionally. But, as is the case in most of Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan’s oeuvre, the majestic landscapes of Madison River have a surprising effect on these city dwellers. In Sheridan’s latest work exploring the relationship between man and the environment, Michelle Pfeiffer plays Stacy Clyburn, the matriarch mourning the tragic demise of her husband Preston (Kurt Russell) when she gathers daughters Abby (Beau Garrett) and Paige (Elle Chapman) — along with Abby’s two daughters and Paige’s husband Russell (Patrick J. Adams) — and brings them to Preston’s old stomping grounds in rural Montana.

If, at fist, it is the family’s desire to support Stacy’s desire to stay that keeps them in the Northwest, things eventually start to shift for the other Clyburns as well. “Each character starts having their own lived experience of this place. I think it grows on them,” says Adams. “As I think many of us experience, when we go to places like this, at fist we’re still on our phone and connected to our other life. We’re like, ‘Oh, this is beautiful. Oh, those stars are nice, but I’ve got things to do and emails to return.’ And then, if you stay long enough, even if it’s a forced stay, you start to slow down and take deep breaths and you’re like, ‘Wait a minute, why do I feel so much better?’”
Sheridan’s series is a contemplation on grief and identity, but it’s fair to say that part of the overall enjoyment is watching certain characters not quite being cut out for provincial living. “It’s fun to have people who are completely out of place in the world that [Sheridan] puts most of his shows,” says Adams. “We still get all the magic of shooting in these environments, but for us, it’s an opportunity to be a bit silly and uncomfortable, and highlight all the ways in which city people can be very much out of their element in these places.” It is also the kind of
environment that initially brings out a lot of frustration within the group. “They’re struggling so much with this loss and they have so much anger. They don’t know where to put it so they take it out on each other,” Chapman explains.
It is surprising to no one that the younger generation of Clyburns are a somewhat pampered breed. “When you fist meet [Paige], she might seem a bit image focused,” says Chapman. “I think that she is also a bit stunted emotionally. She was the younger child and watched her sister make all these mistakes, so she tried to be perfect — but still wasn’t getting really the attention she wanted.” Paige’s hunger for attention and impatience is something that extends to her relationship with Russell. “Paige could be a little bit kinder to him at times, but I also think it’s like a fun game that they both are participants of,” says Chapman. “Over the course of the show, I think we see how they start to reconcile that. Maybe Paige realizes things that are more important than bullying your husband.”
Russell may not share a lot of qualities with the rugged Preston, but there is one important quality they have in common. “He does share wanting to show

up,” says Adams. “Even though he is not a person who is comfortable in the outdoors in any way, he is willing to make himself uncomfortable in the process of showing up for his wife and her family.” It was that nobility that attracted the Suits star to the role. “I was drawn to somebody who’s got a calling beyond just themselves,” says the Toronto actor. “On paper, he’d seem like the guy who’d probably stay home and be like, ‘I’m good. I’ll see you when you get back with your family. Good luck. Give me a call.’ It’s a different kind of character that shows up. Russell’s a quiet character, so I wasn’t sure exactly what to make of him, but I was intrigued enough that I wanted to get to know him better.”
Sheridan may not be an open book when it comes to character evolution, but for those embarking on a project of his, the legacy of his work is what speaks volumes. “Taylor has clearly demonstrated that he’s a writer in full charge of his process, that he has a game plan and that these stories evolve in really interesting ways,” says Adams. “I had no doubt that this is a character that wouldn’t just sit in this gear forever, that this is really just a starting place.” For Chapman, growth is inevitable — especially when it comes to Paige and Russell. “The gift in both of our characters is that we start the most uncomfortable out of the whole ensemble, in this new environment,” she says. “It gives us the farthest way to go.”

ensembles,” he says. “He’s really good at understanding how to put people together who are all going to be on the same page, and really good at discovering talent. He’s casting Michelle Pfeiffer, Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford on one end, but he also sees, for example, in Elle Chapman, ‘You’re ready for this part,’ and getting it so right. That’s not an easy thing to do.”
When it comes to what is on the page, Adams praises Sheridan’s conviction to not create by committee. “He’s a world-class writer and it’s straight from his heart, onto the page, into our hands,” he says. “There’s no middle ground. There’s no people in there trying to change it or make it more appropriate to an algorithm. It is him writing what he’s going through, what he’s thinking about. And I think that’s his real gift.” If in previous Sheridan shows there has been a certain nostalgia for the past, The Madison is a look at truly staying in the present. “Take a look at how you’re living right now,” says Adams. “Grief is going to come for all of us. We’re all going to lose something very suddenly. That process is a real test of how you live your life and who the people in it are. A lot of people can be destroyed by that event, because they don’t have the right people or they’re too isolated, which can really happen to us in a city environment. And this family, in this very beautiful place, is given the opportunity to try something different and see if they can reconnect in a way that didn’t seem possible.”

T’S NO SECRET that soap operas are no longer the cultural force they once were. That was evident back in 2011, when ABC made the still-controversial decision to shutter All My Children and One Life to Live. Now, less than a handful of daytime soaps remain: General Hospital on ABC, while CBS airs The Young and the Restless, The Bold and the Beautiful, and, as of last year, a new entry: Beyond the Gates.

Debuting a new fie-days-a-week soap at a time when the genre seems on the path to extinction was a bold move for CBS. That said, having recently celebrated its fist anniversary, Beyond the Gates has gained a loyal following, breaking new ground as the fist soap in TV history with a predominantly Black cast while earning a spot in Entertainment Weekly’s top 10 TV series of 2025.
According to series creator Michele Val Jean (a seven-time Emmy winner who’d previously written for The Bold and the Beautiful), she envisioned a multigenerational family drama based on a singular premise: What if the matriarch of that family had been Diana Ross?
Ross, of course, went on from her role in The Supremes to a successful career as a solo artist and Oscarnominated actress, and inspired Val Jean to create Anita Dupree (played by Tamara Tunie), a fictional dia with a showbiz career mirroring that of Ross. Also in the mix is her husband, Vernon Dupree (Clifton Davis), and their extended family, who all live in a Maryland suburb just outside of Washington, D.C. — one of the most affluent AfricaAmerican enclaves in the entire U.S.
“Here you’ll find a posh ated community with winding tree-lined streets and luxurious mansions to call home,” reads the series logline. “At the centre of this community are the Duprees, a powerful and prestigious
multi-generational family that is the very definition of Blck royalty. But behind these pristine walls and lush, manicured gardens are juicy secrets and scandals waiting to be uncovered. And those who live outside these gates are watching closely. These are the places where our characters live, love, work and play. Those who have ‘made it’ and those who haven’t are all trying to navigate life . . . and some with more grace than others.”

Jean. “For me, what makes it different is that there’s never been a soap that has been so centred around rich Black people,” she says. “And so, that gives it its own unique flvour. And then we’re trying to bring something different, something new, something modern, somebody maybe you’ve never seen before to the canvas. I think that makes it unique.”
As executive producer Sheila Ducksworth adds, it’s the authenticity that Val Jean brings to her writing that really makes the show stand out. “It’s a lot of stuff tht really is rooted in reality. And so, as Michele had mentioned, the whole idea of this was really because in the DMV area of Washington, D.C., Maryland, Virginia, there are a plethora of these predominantly Black gated communities that exist in real life. That was something that I was aware of and something that I really felt needed to see the light of day and be exposed in a series.”
Val Jean also has some big news to share that will be of keen interest to all soap lovers. “So really thrilled and excited to announce something a little different that we’re going to be doing,” she says. “We’re going to have a major crossover with The Young and the Restless. We’re going to be welcoming Eric Braeden, Peter Bergman, Michael Mealor, Susan Walters, Bryton James and Melissa Ordway into our world and we’re going to do something exciting.”
This crossover event connecting Beyond the Gates to Y&R will air in June, and Val Jean is excited for fans of both shows to see what they’ve cooked up. “It was fun. You know, it was different,” she reflects. “It as something that none of us had ever done before . . . logistically it was challenging but I think we really came up with an exciting piece of television that everybody’s really going to love.”

thought he hadn’t landed the role as Jules, a member of the inscrutable Cunningham family in new horror series Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen — produced by Stranger Things makers the Duffer Brothers — he was devastated. “It had been years since I really felt such a connection to a role,” says the German-Israeli actor, best known for his parts in Unorthodox and The Calling. “Reading the character, I loved that there’s so many sides to Jules. He’s an iceberg. There’s so much underneath the surface.”

“What lurks underneath the surface” could be the description of creator Haley Z. Boston’s entire new series, which centres on engaged couple Rachel Harkin (Camila Morrone) and Nicky Cunningham (Canadian Adam DiMarco), who plan to get hitched in a week’s time. To avoid what Nicky calls “wedding bulls***,” they make their way to his family cabin in the woods, where Rachel gets to know the in-laws she’s about to marry into. What she encounters is enough to give anyone cold feet. But for Wilbusch, it wasn’t the creepy vibes given off y the Cunninghams that attracted him to the role of Nicky’s older brother. “Obviously, Haley didn’t know me, but it’s like she wrote it for me without

knowing me,” he muses. “It’s a magical feeling to read it and just know immediately, ‘I want to play the guy.’ You see the scenes and you just want to film it aleady.”
In this seemingly hostile character, Wilbusch saw far more than an obstacle to Rachel and Nicky’s wedded bliss. “When we meet him, it feels like he’s frozen in time. He’s built a cocoon of defence mechanisms around him. When Rachel comes into the picture, things are starting to stir up and he challenges these demons. We learn about him more and more, as he learns about himself. That’s what I like about him. He’s not friendly — but he’s not friendly to himself either, if that makes sense.” Jules is not the only family

member compelling Rachel to question the commitment she’s about to make. Guided by Nicky’s parents Victoria (Jennifer Jason Leigh) and Boris (Ted Levine), everything and everyone has their place. “There is even a seating order,” says Wilbusch, with a laugh. “They’re a messed-up, close-knit family — which is relatable.”
The series, which Boston has described as looking at the very notion of lifelong commitment through a horror lens, is a surprising take on the genre that is meant to appeal even to those that are not normally fans of scary movies. “To be honest, it’s not really my genre either,” says Wilbusch. “What I love about this show is that it’s not just a jump-scare. It’s deep psychology. It’s about a family, about relationships, about love and soulmates, and about generational trauma. It’s an amplified lve story, basically.” It is also visually unique. “It’s aesthetically very appealing; the stage, the sounds and the costumes. I also feel like there’s a rhythm to it.”

but chuckle when talking about their fearless leader. “I think the personal is universal, and I think we all have questions about love, especially when our heart is broken,” he reflects. “e understand that every song is about love and every movie is about love and every book is about love. It’s so universal. Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen is a horror story, but at the end, it’s about love and family, honesty, and choosing the right partner.”
He furthermore praises the creator for her unwavering commitment to the project. “I heard people tell her, ‘You got to take a break,’ but she was always hands-on. Every tablecloth had a meaning. Every time I had a question, there was so much thought [behind the answer]. And I feel like there are no small characters. Every character comes from somewhere, goes somewhere. When you have such good writing, it’s not hard to do a good job. You just need to be in the moment, say the words and mean it.”
Based on its horror themes, it is no wonder the show appealed to the creators of Netflix smash-hit Stranger
Things. “[The Duffer Brothers] were very trusting of Haley. They were there and interested and we always heard that they love the show and what they see. It was a nice balance of really caring and being hands-on, but also just letting Haley and everyone do their thing,” says Wilbusch. This is the fist project to come out of the Duffers’ overall deal with Netflix, and the fist time Hunters writer Boston is at the helm of her very own show. “For everyone, this was a baby — a real fistborn — and they were very, very excited,” says Wilbusch. While the subject matter is undeniably dark, there was joy behind the scenes of the Toronto-based shoot. The fact that the cast and crew managed to find lvity between takes was key to the vibes onscreen. “It’s an important question, though. How do you bring an infectious energy to set with the crew and the people and your castmates and still kind of be in the zone? It’s a fine balane,” Wilbusch explains. “We had such a great crew and great cast. We went out. I cooked
one time at my studio apartment, in the dead of winter, and everybody came. Everybody was a good egg.” Yes, even his onscreen sparring partner DiMarco. “I love him so much. He’s really became one of my favourite people,” says Wilbusch, who believes the relationships behind the screen contributed to the tension we now get to witness. “I feel when you enjoy working with somebody so much, it’s easier to play their nemesis because you trust each other. I’d much rather have a dark story with good people than the other way around.”

His followup to Dream Scenario, director Kristoffer Borgl ’s dark comedy focuses on a happily engaged couple (Zendaya and Robert Pattinson). Per the official synopsis, as the date of thei impending nuptials approaches, the couple’s relationship “is put to the test when an unexpected turn sends their wedding week off the rails” According to Pattinson, the fictitious wedding wasn’t the only thing that went off the rails, revealing to French magazine Première that he was having so much difficult understanding the subtext of a scene that he called up his costar. “I was desperately looking for its meaning, to the point of writing pages and pages of textual analysis,” Pattinson recalled. “I ended up calling Zendaya the night before shooting the scene in question. I shared my doubts with her, I spoke for two hours, and blah blah blah, and after a while, very calmly, she finally made me understand that the line just said what it meant to say, that there was no hidden meaning.”

Q Giacomo, Ellis finally got some closure on his brother’s murder at the end of season two. How has that affected him in this third seaso?
A GIACOMO: Yeah, whenever someone loses someone that’s special in their life, there’s some soulsearching that happens, because a large part of our identity sometimes has been tied to that person — whether it was your brother or your father or your mother. When it’s someone you love, it’s like they were a part of you. It’s kind of figuring out, Alright, well, who am I without that person and how can I still be a contributing member of society, a good person in the world?” And [for Ellis] I think he’s very much about doing what’s right and being a righteous human as a police officer.
So, in coming back [after his sabbatical from the police force], he’s refreshed and rejuvenated. He’s had some time off to think, h’s found someone who he’s very fond of that he brings back with him. And he’s just trying to enjoy life — to be happy for the fist time in a long time. I think Ellis is focused on letting himself be happy.

Q On the subject of that newfound happiness, how does the arrival of Jessica [Kaylah Zander] impact Ellis and Max’s partnership, as well as their personal bond?
A GIACOMO: He has this girlfriend. He’s very happy. He’s in love. Max is having to kind of reconcile that and “deal with it,” for lack of a better word . . . but still trying to be there for Ellis as a friend, and work together. It’s awkward, though. And that’s what we’re playing with this season — the awkwardness of working with someone you have feelings for and having to compartmentalize the work stuff with the feelings, and keep them separate. Can we do that? Do we want to do that? Those are the themes that we’re playing with.

Q And Vanessa, Max’s long-lost mom, Vivienne, resurfaces this year. It’s obviously a complicated reunion. What does your new co-star Tamara Taylor bring to the mix?
A VANESSA: She is, fist of all, a very talented actress. And just the whole storyline is massive. You know, my mom is back from the dead. “Why were you gone for 15 years? Why didn’t you contact me?” That’s gonna be a huge piece of it for Max. She’s torn because she loves that her mom is back, but also is so betrayed that she made her daughter live with this pain for 15 years, and feeling like she lost the most important person . . . She does a great job portraying my mother and I’m excited for everybody to see that — especially with the fact that she brought a major mafia hed to our door, and we owe $150 million!
Q Given that this is a family of con artists, is there part of Max that doesn’t quite trust Vivienne? Is she worried about getting stabbed in the back?
A VANESSA: She’s a bit more accepting than Ricky [Fletcher Donovan] and her dad [Jason Priestley]. I think she’s questioning if she’s gonna be played maybe. But she loves her mom, so I feel like she’s convincing everybody else, like, “OK, we need to do this [pull off a on to help Vivienne pay her debt to the mob boss].” She believes her more than the others, for sure. But I think in the back of her mind, there’s a question . . .
Q How does this motley family of con artists gel after all these years, now that they’re taking on this massive job?
A VANESSA: It’s very interesting. I mean, we’re all working together again in this con dynamic and it’s obviously very stressful for everybody. Because tensions are high, there’s gonna be a little bit more fihting between the group as we try and agree on certain things — because, again, we’re handing over $150 million. We just went from being rich to losing the money again. And not everybody is a fan of that.
QHow do you think growing up in a family that lies for a living shaped Max as a person? Beyond just picking up the tools of mom and dad’s con artist trade, has that volatile dynamic made her feel like she can’t rely on anyone?
A VANESSA: For sure. And I feel like that’s manifested into maybe her being not the most reliable — and being able to bend on her word more easily, since that’s happened to her. A lot of white lies or sugarcoating things . . . stuff like that. But if she is a product of the environment that she was raised in and conditioned to be in, she has a good heart deep down. She doesn’t wanna screw over anybody who she doesn’t feel deserves it, you know what I mean? Sometimes she’s forced to hurt people that she loves, but that’s not her goal.

Both shot and set right here in B.C., this breezy CBC crime romp traces the unlikely partnership between police detective Cole Ellis (Giacomo Gianniotti) and con artist Max Mitchell (Vanessa Morgan), as they take advantage of the latter’s skills of deception and persuasion for a host of kooky undercover operations. All the while, they dance around their undeniable attraction to one another, and flir with the impending disaster represented by Max’s fellow con artist parents (Jason Priestley and Tamara Taylor).
Q And Giacomo, on that note, where has Ellis landed with Max and her con artist ways? Has he more or less reckoned with the fact that he may never be able to completely trust her? Has he come to a place of loving the good and living with the bad?
A GIACOMO: A little bit of that. I think in the beginning, he was desperately fihting her personality and desperately fihting who she was and trying to make her fit in this bx that she didn’t fit in. ow Ellis has realized, “OK, I’m gonna stop wasting all this energy trying to make you fit in this bx and just kind of learn to take you at your word, and love you for who you are and not for who you’re not.” Even though it frustrates him — her style and how she goes rogue all the time — ultimately there’s something inside all of that, that Ellis loves.
Q It also seems Max has been accepted by the rest of the cops this season. Even when Ellis was off on his sabbatical early on, Max was walking onto crime scenes and taking control . . .
A VANESSA: For sure. As you’ve seen, she has her bedazzled badge; it’s all she really needed to feel fully
MEMORABLE ROLES
With a résumé stretching back to childhood on such series as Disney’s My Babysitter’s a Vampire and Family Channel sitcom The Latest Buzz, Ottawa native Vanessa Morgan landed her buzziest part to date in 2017, on The CW’s zeitgeist-throttling hit Riverdale. Joining the ensemble in season two, she played Toni Topaz, a key ringleader of local biker gang the Southside Serpents.
Born in Rome, but mostly raised in Ontario, Giacomo Gianniotti is best known for his turn as Dr. Andrew DeLuca from season 11 through season 17 of Grey’s Anatomy. He also recurred on Murdoch Mysteries as Leslie Garland, villainous brother-in-law of Dr. Ogden, and got up to some pre-Wild Cards con-artist antics as wannabe lord Remy on CW history drama Reign.
accepted [laughs]. But yeah, now you can see that Chief Li [Terry Chen] trusts her and is like, “Max, you’re on it. Get on the case!” . . . Ellis, he even is like, “OK, I guess we’re doin’ this!” Before, he was way more hesitant in disguise [on their undercover cases]. He’s rolling with it. That’s really fun for Max. She feels like a real member of the squad.
Q Has Ellis picked up some con artist flare from Max at this point
A GIACOMO: Definitel. I think he’s finally seen the value of her approach, and understands that it’s not crazy. He’s very much like, “Alright, I guess we’re dressing up! What do you want to do? This works, clearly. We’ve done it a million times. So, let’s find a ay in.”
Q What’s been your favourite undercover mission thus far?
A GIACOMO: I thought the Yellowstone episode last season was fun. Kind of a cowboy, western feel . . .
VANESSA: And I slapped him.
GIACOMO: You slapped the hell out of me.
VANESSA: I actually slapped you! I was like, “Oh, I’m just gonna fake it.” And he’s like, “No, hit me. Let’s make it real.”
Q How would you pitch this third season to a potential viewer?
A GIACOMO: It’s very exciting. There’s a lot of really great action. Gideon Varga, this bad guy that is the looming shadow of darkness throughout season three — Max and her family are desperately trying to pull off this on that they’re essentially forced to for this big bad guy to clear their debt . . . And Max is discovering stuff about her mom and trying to make up for all this lost time. Ellis is happy and in love and trying to enjoy that — and balancing his feelings with Max. So, we’ve got a nice swing of dramatic stuff an comedic stuff, as well.
