EDITOR’S NOTE

ZACH GALIFIANAKIS GETS GARDENING

When HGTV fist launched in 1994, it was an acronym for Home & Garden Television. And while the cable channel eventually abandoned most of its garden-focused programming, Netfli is picking up the slack with a new B.C.-filme series that promises to place gardening in a whole new light.

“This Is a Gardening Show is a refreshing and whimsical take on gardening, hosted by Zach Galifianaki ,” reads the streamer’s logline for this new docuseries. “Rather than positioning himself as an expert, Galifianakis appoaches the subject with curiosity and self- effacing humour, admitting that his goal is to learn alongside the audience. The series blends lighthearted comedy with a sincere appreciation for humans and nature. Ultimately, This Is a Gardening Show is about the joy of connecting with the earth and people.”

The same quirky humour that permeated his FX comedy, Baskets, and his bonkers talk show Between Two Ferns can be seen in his new project. “If I were to offer a remedy to the human condition, it would be a garden — or acid,” Galifianakis joes.

WEDNESDAY, NETFLIX

Yet amid all the hilarity, there’s a serious undercurrent running beneath the shenanigans as the comedian celebrates the joy of growing one’s own vegetables in a backyard garden. “The way we get food is so perverse, right now, I think it’s worth talking about it,” he tells viewers. “And what we’re leaving this next generation, they may have to know this stuff.”

Much of the series was filmed on ancouver Island, in the Comox Valley (not surprising, given that Galifianakis wns a home on Denman Island), and viewers will be treated to the beauty of British Columbia throughout the series.

“People have the potential in them to find beauy and happiness in all this, ’cause I certainly have,” Galifianakis dds.

THE SHELBY SHUFFLE?

Oscar winner Cillian Murphy spent six seasons and a movie starring as gang leader Tommy Shelby in Peaky Blinders Don’t expect him to appear in the new series — but he is onboard as an exec producer.

We just caught that new Peaky Blinders movie on Netflix. Do you think they’ll do another

—R.P., Kelowna

In fact, creator Steven Knight plans to revive the hit U.K. series itself, which streamed its sixth and final season n 2022. Jumping ahead to the 1950s, the new Peaky Blinders will fin the city of Birmingham rebuilding after the Second World War blitz, danger and opportunity lurking in every alleyway. At the centre of it all is Tommy Shelby’s son Duke — played in recent film Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man by Barry Keoghan, but now recast with Jamie Bell. Per Tudum, Duke is “older, wiser, more ambitious and most certainly more dangerous.” Netflix has ordered two six-episode seasons. Stranger Things’ Charlie Heaton and No Time to Die’s Lashana Lynch will also star.

Dexter’s Next Nemesis?

What’s going on with the Dexter reboot? Is there going to be another season? Or have they cancelled it now like they did the other one [prequel Dexter: Original Sin]?

—O.F., North Vancouver

Fear not! Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) — serial killer of serial killers — will return in a second season of Dexter: Resurrection. That said, it might take a little while, since filming only just got underway in April.

A sequel to 2021’s Dexter: New Blood, 2025’s Resurrection found Dex miraculously surviving that shot to the chest from his chip-off-the-old-block son Harrison (Jack Alcott), then following the kid to New York City, where they got mixed up with a sort of serial killer social club. Members included famous faces like Peter Dinklage, Uma Thurman, Neil Patrick Harris, Eric Stonestreet and Krysten Ritter, all of whom were dispatched by season’s end.

Now, streamer Paramount+ has announced some details on the threat that Dex and Harrison will brave in season two — and the iconic actor set to portray him.

Indeed, Succession’s Brian Cox has just joined Resurrection as the new “Big Bad.” He’ll play the New York Ripper, who’s described as “a serial killer who terrorized the city years ago. Though no longer active as a killer, he’s found a new way to live into his infamy by continuing to taunt the survivors of his long-ago murder spree.”

I remember a western movie from the 1960s that really got my attention because of the villain who shot a young boy, but I cannot recall who played that part. I want to say that it’s Clint Eastwood, but nothing shows up when I Google him. Any ideas?
–V.F., Salmon Arm

I believe you are thinking of the 1968 “spaghetti western” Once Upon a Time in the West, which is easily mistakable for an Eastwood project — especially since the actor had just worked with director Sergio Leone on A Fistful of Dollars (1964), For a Few Dollars More (1965) and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966). And while Leone did reach out to Eastwood for Once Upon a Time, Clint declined.

The star instead was Henry Fonda He too rejected Leone’s offer at first forcing the Italian auteur to travel to America for a face-to-face meeting in which he made his pitch. He asked Fonda to picture this scene: a gunman is glimpsed from the waist down, as he

Once Upon a Time in the West was incredibly slow, with glacially paced scenes that said nothing and went on forever. The running time in Italy was 171 minutes and it was, indeed, a big hit there. Yet in the U.S. (where the movie was cut down to 145 minutes), it was a financial and critical fl. That said, time was kind to this particular motion picture, and in 2009 the U.S. Library of Congress and its National Film Registry honoured it as one of the greatest westerns ever — deemed “culturally, aesthetically and historically significant”

Asked by The Times of London how they plan to move forward without the show’s “anchor,” co-creator (and O’Hara’s fellow Canadian) Evan Goldberg said: “It has been an unbelievable challenge. Obviously emotionally, dealing with the loss, but also when it comes to the show itself. We wrote it for her to be there. We had it all set and the shockwaves permeate throughout the entire new season. It’s been difficult You worded it better than we could — she was the anchor and now the anchor is gone.”

Goldberg’s creative partner Seth Rogen got a tad more specific on ho the death will manifest in the narrative, telling the Times: “If anything, we’re acknowledging the idea that we are a little anchorless. But, honestly, that is a part of life and what we all experience. And so while we try to not dwell too much on heavy themes in this show, they will be there in this second season. We are not ignoring it.”

The Studio will return to Apple TV in late 2026 or early 2027.

Brother in Harms

After picking up two Emmys and a Peabody for 2024 satirical thriller Baby Reindeer, creator/star Richard Gadd returns for another ambitious, nuanced dissection of toxic relationships.

Half Man finds the cottish actor again pulling doubleduty in front of and behind the camera. He plays Ruben, a rough-and-tumble lad who grew up in Glasgow alongside his best friend Niall (Rocketman alum Jamie Bell) — who is a considerably meeker sort of fellow. Despite their differences, all their life the two have been intimately bonded . . . though the power dynamic has been, quite definitiely, alpha and beta. Alas, when they reunite at Niall’s wedding, things take a turn. Per the synopsis, Ruben seems “shifty” and “on edge” — anything but the “fiece and loyal” pal Niall remembers. “And soon, an explosion of violence takes place which catapults us

back through their lives, from the ’80s to the present day . . . Capturing 30 years in the lives of these broken men, Half Man explores brotherhood, violence and the intense fragility of male relationships. After all, when things fall apart . . . it is sometimes the closest relationships which break the hardest.”

Teasing the six-part series to GQ, Gadd himself explained: “I felt it was interesting to explore dysfunctional manhood, where it comes from and how it kind of evolves over time. Why male camaraderie is so intoxicating for people, and why male bonds are so strong, but also why the repercussions of negative male behaviour from that can be also extreme.”

THE ENEMY AT MY SIDE

In January of 2024, Apple debuted a U.K. crime drama that centred on a taut, intricate game of cat-and-mouse. Except this wasn’t cop vs. criminal. It was cop vs. cop.

When DS June Lenker (Cush Jumbo) answered a call from a woman fearing for her life, it set her on the trail of another crime from years earlier, in which a young man was sent to prison for a crime that June came to believe he did not commit. The detective who booked him? DCI Daniel Hegarty (Peter Capaldi), a shady superior officer who plays by his own very questionable rules. In the end, while June was successful at freeing an innocent man, she was unable to expose the corruption of Hegarty and his squad.

Perhaps she’ll get a second chance in this second season. But off the ho, June has a much more pressing concern. Leading a crowd-control operation at a political rally on the streets of London, our heroine is on the scene when a man is stabbed — the lad ultimately dying in her arms. Deeply rattled and determined to get justice, she soon crosses paths with her old nemesis Hegarty, who is now a key figure in polic intelligence, and believes this murder could be linked to a farright domestic terror plot.

So begins an uneasy alliance that could bring Hegarty’s misdeeds to light . . . or drag June to the dark side.

The film hails fom Everest and Beast director Baltasar Kormákur, who said that the script “felt almost existential. Through action, through horror, through hardship, you reveal the characters.”

Ripping down the fences, they entrusted the land’s recovery to a mix of animals, both tame and wild, in the hopes that their beloved family estate would return to its former glory. YOUR WEEKLY SCOOP ON NEW TV PROJECTS IN THE WORKS

RECENTLY SEEN IN THE final season of Stranger Things and the sci-fi om-com Wishful Thinking (which premiered last month at SXSW), the year is shaping up to be a busy one for Maya Hawke. Not only does she have some other film scheduled to be released this year — including The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping (set to premiere in November) and One Night Only, the actress and singer also has a new album coming out in a few weeks, along with a “secret” summer project she recently discussed in an interview with People.

Into the Woods

As if that’s not enough to pack any schedule, the recent newlywed — she married singer-songwriter Christian Lee Hutson on Valentine’s Day — will soon be seen headlining a new TV project.

According to Variety (which fist broke the news), Hawke has signed on to star in upcoming Netflix series The God of the Woods, based on the 2024 novel by Long Bright River author Liz Moore

The series is described as a “multi-generational drama series set in the Adirondacks, exploring the Van Laar family’s

dark secrets, class tensions, and the mysteries surrounding the disappearance of 13-yearold Barbara Van Laar from her family’s summer camp — in the wake of an earlier family tragedy that may be related. As the past and present collide, the Van Laars’ wealth and influene unravel, revealing the damaging consequences of privilege and the abuse of power.”

Hawke will play Judy Luptack, a “smart and quietly determined” cop, “the fist female investigator in the male-dominated Bureau of Criminal Investigation,” who is “assigned to unravel the disappearance of a young girl from a summer camp in upstate New York.”

The series was initially greenlit in December, when it was announced that Liz Hannah (The Girl From Plainville) would be working with Moore as co-showrunners, writers and executive producers.

“We love making TV and can’t wait to bring The God of the Woods to life with our partners at Sony and Netflix” the pair said in a statement. “We hope everyone falls in love (and hate) with these characters as much as we have.”

Stranger Things alum Maya Hawke will be returning to Netflix in upcoming series
The God of the Woods.

JUSTICE PERVERTED

Despite the ardent hopes of Donald Trump and numerous billionaires, the Jeffrey Epstei scandal is not going away, and continues to expand. As salacious new revelations emerge on a daily basis, Sony Pictures Television is shopping around a new TV project about the investigation into the convicted pedophile and alleged blackmailer, with Laura Dern attached to star.

The limited series is based on Perversion of Justice: The Jeffrey Epstein tory, the 2021 book by Julie K. Brown, the Miami Herald journalist whose investigative reporting about Epstein renewed interest in the case. Dern has signed on to portray Brown, and will also serve as one of the series’ executive producers.

According to the official logli, the series will provide “an explosive account of an investigative reporter exposing the secret plea deal between Epstein and federal prosecutors. Drawing from Brown’s experience as a groundbreaking reporter for the Miami Herald, the book and the

A FEUD BETWEEN FRIENDS

limited series follow her relentless years-long investigation that identified 80 victims, persuaded key survivors to go on the record, and led to Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell’s arrests.”

Sharon Hoffma (whose credits include House of Cards and the FX limited series Mrs. America) is adapting the book for the screen. and will serve as executive producer and co-showrunner alongside Eileen Myers (American Hostage, Masters of Sex).

Dern, a nine-time Emmy nominee, has experienced much success in television over the past decade, most recently as star and exec producer of Apple TV’s Palm Royale. She’s also earned acclaim from several projects for HBO. These include her starring role in dramedy Enlightened, from The White Lotus creator Mike White; starring alongside Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley and Reese Witherspoon in two seasons of Big Little Lies; and her riveting performance as a survivor of childhood sexual abuse in the harrowing 2018 film The Tale.

A longtime friendship goes completely and hilariously off the rails in Alice and Steve, an upcoming Hulu series that’s been described as an “anti-romantic comedy.” Created and written by Sophie Goodhart (Sex Education), the six-part dark comedy focuses on Alice (Nicola Walker, who recently starred in British series The Split), who becomes devastated when she discovers that her best friend Steve (Flight of the Conchords’ Jemaine Clement) is dating her 26-year-old daughter Izzy (Yali Topol Margalith). Fearful of losing both her daughter and her best friend in one fell swoop, Alice tries everything she can think of as she desperately attempts to kibosh the relationship. Unfortunately for her,

Steve’s more than ready for the attack, and what begins as a perfect friendship soon devolves into an all-out feud.

“A hilarious, messy and complicated exploration of friendship, love, and revenge, Alice and Steve asks the question, how far would you go for love — or revenge?” describes the series’ official logli. “Will Alice forgive Steve? Will Steve and Izzy make a relationship work? Amongst all the questions hanging in the balance, one thing is certain; their lives will never be the same again.”

A premiere date has yet to be set, but Hulu has confirmed that Alice and Steve will make its debut at some point during the summer of 2026.

PUZZLES

Place a number in the empty boxes in such a way that each row across, each column down and each small 9-box square contains all of the numbers from one to nine.

The idea of Go Figure is to arrive at the fi gures given at the bottom and right-hand columns of the diagram by following the arithmetic signs in the order the are given (that is, from left to right and top to bottom). Use only the numbers below the diagram to complete its blank squares and use each of the nine numbers only once.

Keanu Reeves stars as a movie star on a mission in Jonah Hill’s star-studded comedy flick also featuring Cameron Diaz and Matt Bomer

FORMER CHILD STARturned-global megastar Reef Hawk (Keanu Reeves) has spent the last fie years rebuilding his life, after substance abuse derailed it. Long gone are the wild days of his youth, with Reef now spending most of his time with trusted best friends Kyle (Cameron Diaz) and Xander (Matt Bomer). But this

newfound inner peace is about to be shattered by a phone call from his lawyer Ira Slitz (Jonah Hill), who breaks the news that someone out there has a video that could ruin Reef’s now hard-earned good guy reputation. What’s a disgraced actor to do but go on an apology tour? Reef embarks on a journey of making amends with a long (and we mean long) list of potential enemies.

Directed by Hill and written by Hill and Ezra Woods, Outcome is what Diaz calls a “cautionary comedy.” “It’s not necessarily a personal experience for us,” she says. “But I think that it’s showing

SORRY

what can happen when you have that many eyes on you. We live in a culture where people are desperate for people to watch them all the time, and we think that something to aspire to is fame. This is a story about someone who never had that choice. He was rushed into this position from childhood, and he’s really suffering from the extremes of being somebody who’s spent their whole life in the public eye and what that takes from you, how little room there is to be human in that.”

Although the tone of the film boders on absurdist, what drew Reeves to the project was its sincerity. “Something that was really cool about the script was how

Outcome

comedic, or out there, it was, but also so truthful, honest or authentic in terms of the ambition and emotion,” he says.

For Diaz, Hill’s script was evidence that comedy and drama always go hand in hand. “You can’t really tell a story with just one emotion,” she says. “You have to have the rollercoaster of being human, our existential experience of ups and downs, laughing, crying. In this one, we’re striking a really good balance of how what something feels like on the inside and what it looks like from the outside are always two different things — which is very much what I think the culture around celebrity is. It’s viewing

people as objects, but really the person who is being viewed is experiencing something very real as a human being.”

It is the long-term friendships between the characters played by Reeves, Diaz and Bomer that the three feel is the grounding force of the film. “f you’re lucky like Reef, you have friends like Kyle and Xander who can hold you accountable, but also forgive you and hold you to the fie a little bit and show you some grace,” says Bomer. “I think real relationships are important in terms of moral compass and your life and choices.” Adds Diaz: “There’s nobody who can reflect ou back to yourself more than the people closest to you,” she says. “A bunch of strangers don’t know the whole story. You have to rely on the people who love you to take those cues from, I think.”

For the three actors, getting to explore these themes with each other was one of the biggest appeals. “There’s a lot of reasons why we, as actors, choose to do a film. I’s like stars align,” says Diaz. “Sometimes you sign on because you think that there’s a great opportunity to explore with other actors, with a director, with a writer that you really admire. And I think in this circumstance with these actors and with Jonah, it’s easy for me to go, ‘Yeah, I want to explore

whatever this conversation’s going to be. It would be fun to do it with them.’”

It was also the fist time since the 1996 crime comedy Feeling Minnesota that Reeves and Diaz reunited onscreen. “When we worked together 30 years ago, it was my fourth film. I as very green,” says Diaz. “Poor guy had to act with this young novice actor who was just starting out. So, I was happy to get the opportunity to work with him again now, 30 years later, after a little more experience. But we’ve seen each other over the years, always happy to see one another. He’s always been who he is now, just the loveliest human. I really enjoyed getting to do this with him and Matt and Jonah. It was pure joy.”

Another pop-culture icon Reeves looked forward to exploring the perils of fame with was Martin Scorsese, who joins Drew Barrymore, David Spade, Susan Lucci and Kaia Gerber as one of the people on Reef’s lengthy atonement list. “For me, that was a very special day,” says Reeves. “I’d had the chance to meet him over the years a couple of times, but in my wildest hopes, imagination and dreams, to act with Martin Scorsese is like, ‘What is happening?’ And he’s so good. There’s kind of a father-son thing going on there a little bit, and he’s playing a character that really supported me in my youth. Just to sit in those moments with him was very special.”

Much like the chuckles Outcome is meant to evoke onscreen, the cast and crew relished being able to laugh together during their shoot. “I have never laughed harder on a set in my life,” says Bomer. “The process Jonah uses as a director is very unique and liberating. I didn’t really know what was going to happen on any given day.” What was virtually guaranteed, whatever the day brought with it, was a grand old time among friends.

‘‘
The dynamic that we had was really cool and fun — the way that we could all play off ech other. Now, Reef Hawk is kind of a weirdo, so some days were more enjoyable to play him than others. All in all, it was such a special experience.”

“I mean, with Cameron and Matt, the days in the car, some of the stuff in the house, just playing, was just so great because there was the script and then there was improvisation,” says Reeves. “The dynamic that we had was really cool and fun — the way that we could all play off ech other. Now, Reef Hawk is kind of a weirdo, so some days were more enjoyable to play him than others. All in all, it was such a special experience.”

Jonah Hill, who co-wrote and directed Outcome, plays Reef’s longtime lawyer, Ira Slitz.

A NEW animated series returns to the Stranger Things universe

THE FIVE-SEASON saga of Stranger Things may have concluded, but a new animated series offers fans the opportunity to return to Hawkins, Indiana, and reunite with characters they’ve come to know and love.

Following a brief theatrical run, Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 makes its Netflix debut this week. Set between the series’ second and third seasons, the series tells a standalone story

L to R: Dustin (Braxton Quinney), Will (Benjamin Plessala), Nikki (Odessa A’zion), Eleven (Brooklyn Davey Norstedt) and Mike (Luca Diaz).

that fits netly within the confines of the original.

“In the winter of 1985, snow blankets the town and the horrors of the Upside Down are finally ading,” states the series logline. “Our heroes Eleven, Mike, Will, Dustin, Lucas, and Max have settled back into a normal life of D&D, snowball fihts and quiet days. But beneath the ice, something terrifying has awakened. Could it be from the Upside Down? From the depths of Hawkins Lab? Or from somewhere else entirely? Our heroes must race to solve this mystery and save Hawkins in this new story set in the Stranger Things universe.”

The idea for Tales From ’85 originated from the series’ creators, the Duffer Brothers, while they brainstormed various concepts set within the world of Stranger Things.

“When we started talking about was there anything else we wanted to do with Stranger Things, this was one of our fist ideas,” Ross Duffer tells Tudum of the series, written and produced by showrunner Eric Robles.

“It’s got the thrill of being young, being a kid, and going on these thrilling adventures. But then there’s this essence of real danger, real stakes,” Robles explains. “We soon learn that nothing is quite as they thought it was.”

One thing that isn’t as it was is the cast, with new actors portraying the animated versions of the show’s characters: Eleven (voiced

by Brooklyn Davey Norstedt), Max (Jolie Hoang-Rappaport), Mike (Luca Diaz), Lucas (Elisha “EJ” Williams), Dustin (Braxton Quinney), Will (Benjamin Plessala), Hopper (Brett Gipson) and Steve (Jeremy Jordan). They’ll be joined by Nikki Baxter, a pink-haired new character voiced by Marty Supreme standout Odessa A’zion.

In addition, Janeane Garofalo is voicing Anna Baxter, Nikki’s mother and new teacher at the Hawkins school, Lou Diamond Phillips voices Daniel Fischer, and Nightmare on Elm Street legend Robert Englund (who played nefarious Victor Creel in the fourth season) supplies the voice for a new character, Cosmo.

When he was fist approached by the Duffers, Robles searched for inspiration by taking a deep dive into the past. “Let me do some research on this,” he recalls. “Let me really dissect the show, dig into my old

memory vault of a lot of ’80s movies I used to watch, and see what I can piece together here.” Once he began that research, the concept for the spinoff “just hit m,” he noted.

“This is one of the rarest opportunities that we’re ever going to get to be with the main characters. We get to go back in time and really just hang out with these kids,” Robles adds.

“It’s like Hawkins Lab science meets Upside Down matter,” he continues. “When you put them together, those are the kinds of creatures we have in our world.”

That includes a shark-like monster hiding beneath the snow, which Robles reveals was inspired by his memories of Steven Spielberg’s Jaws. “I grew up watching [that movie], and we play with the same trope in the sense [that] underneath all that snow, there’s something lurking, and you just never know where that thing’s going to come out and grab you,” he explains.

Jaws wasn’t the only vintage movie that inspired Robles. “I grew up watching a lot of horror movies and ’80s films lie E.T., or The Goonies, or The Lost Boys. These classics just had this sense of kids figuring thins out, and that the dangers were real. I love Stranger Things for so many reasons, including the nostalgia, and it just checks all the boxes of things I wanted to do. [With Tales From ’85], we follow a mystery that’s not reset after every episode. The audience can feel like they’re part of the journey with these kids.”

According to Robles, Tales from ’85 mixes together all the elements that he loved from those films. “I’s not just an action show, and it’s not a comedy, but it’s got elements of both,” he explains. “These kids love each other, and they [feel the] need to protect each other. They are all a family in a sense. We not only have these big adventures, but we’re also able to infuse a lot of heart and real moments into the show.”

STEALING

IF YOU THOUGHT THINGS were knotty for Andrew “Coop” Cooper (Jon Hamm) in the fist season of Your Friends & Neighbors, get ready for some real complications in the addictive series’ second season. The comedic crime drama started with former hedge-fund manager Coop laying in a pool of blood, leaving everyone wondering if in the middle of robbing his neighbours he had somehow also committed murder. But while Coop was cleared before season’s end, things were far from charmed in the upscale town of Westmont Village when we left off.

JON

HAMM’s Coop is confronted with a dangerous new threat in the second season of Your Friends and Neighbors

The relationship remains fraught between Coop and his former lover Samantha “Sam” Levitt (Olivia Munn), who after setting up Coop for the “murder” of her husband and suffering the legal consequences of trying to frame her husband’s suicide as something more sinister (in order to claim his life insurance) has become the social pariah of society. This includes alienating Coop’s ex-wife and Sam’s best friend Mel (Amanda Peet). “She has lost everything,” says Munn. “There’s no more money, there’s no more social status. Everyone hates her. But she’s determined to get back into the good graces of everyone. You really see

someone who is dealing with immense shame and immense confidene at the same time — shame in what she’s done and confidene that she can totally get back to where she was.”

Coop, meanwhile, managed to exit the whole scenario relatively unscathed, yet decided that instead of jumping on the opportunity to rejoin the world of finane, he will continue to rob his wealthy friends of luxury items they’ll never realize are missing. “While he starts robbing houses out of desperation, what it becomes is a liberation for him,” says series creator Jonathan Tropper. “It’s a combination of lashing out at the system that didn’t

work for him and, if he can manage to not get killed or go to jail, I think the end of this show has him freed from all the expectations he put on himself and from that script he’d been following. The choice at the end of season one was, ‘If I go back there, I’m just going to go back to sleepwalking through my life again.’ While robbing houses may not be a tenable career for the future, right now it’s keeping him from going back to that.”

That situation reaches a whole new level of invigorating when billionaire Owen Ashe, played by James Marsden, moves into town. “In season one, Coop himself was the disruptor, but in season two, we wanted to bring in a disruptor to Coop’s life,” says Tropper. “Owen Ashe is not just a disruptor for Coop, he’s a disruptor for the whole neighbourhood. Men want to be him, women want to be with him. He’s like this magnet that draws everybody in and then gradually the people who really get drawn in start getting burned.” Indeed, Ashe is someone who boisterously enjoys his wealth, but this no-holds-barred lifestyle comes with a dangerous edge. “He doesn’t see any contradiction between blackmailing someone and also wanting to be their friend,” says Tropper. “He thinks both things can exist at the same time because he’s missing a certain moral centre.”

For Marsden, playing the maniacally energetic character shaking up Westmont Village was a liberating experience. “I love it. I wish I was that guy that could just like, boom, make a decision and not care if it’s the right one or the wrong one,” he says. “I feel like I could use a little bit more of that in my life.” While the rest of the men in his age range are discussing various health concerns that are slowing them down, Ashe moves at the speed of light. “I feel like he’s a guy who doesn’t idle well,” says Marsden. “He’s one of those guys who just talk a mile a minute and are always interested to know someone’s story and what’s behind it. So, he moves into Westmont Village, buys this palatial estate, throws these big parties and wants to ingratiate himself to all the wealthy, cliquey, handbag-carrying, sports car-driving locals. He consumes energy and spits it back out in these elaborate ways.”

But for some, as in the fist season, the series continues to contend with the realities of middle age. “We wanted to go a little darker with the things Coop’s confronting, whether it’s his own mortality, the physical or the psychic aches and pains of middle age,” says Tropper. “Everyone is feeling their age in a way.” This includes Mel, with whom Coop continues to have a relationship that audiences are rooting for to succeed. “After all the events of season one, they’re in a good place as far as co-parents and friends and the people who know each other best in this town,” says Tropper. “But you can see that there is an underlying strain between them because they clearly have a lot of unresolved issues.”

If Mel, in the past, was able to handle some of these frustrations with grace, perimenopause has shortened her fuse significantl. “She’s discovering how much rage she has,” says Peet. “Some of that is the fact that her cohorts have taken back in Sam, even though Sam framed Coop.

Coop (Jon Hamm) reluctantly navigates a delicate situation on behalf of Owen (James Marsden), while Sam (Olivia Munn) and Owen become an item.
‘‘ While he starts robbing houses out of desperation, what it becomes is a liberation for him. It’s a combination of lashing out at the system that didn’t work for him and, if he can manage to not get killed or go to jail, I think the end of this show has him freed from all the expectations he put on himself and from that script he’d been following.”

She kind of loses her s***.” For the actress, who recently opened up in a New Yorker essay about the loss of her parents while going through breast cancer, being able to play a heightened version of the female middle-age experience was welcomed.

“It’s really cathartic,” she says. “It’s all the conversations I’m having with my girlfriends and then I go to work and I get to explore a psychotic version of everything we feel.” For that she praises the series creator, who made a point of adding a bit of “The Mel Show” to the season. “To have a

middle-aged male boss who wants to dig into this stuff just mde me love him even more,” she says. “I don’t think he’s doing anyone a favour. He’s genuinely like, ‘What’s this like? How can I get in there and understand it?’ And he has a fun way of skewering things.”

All of this is caged in the kind of wealth most of us will never understand or experience. But that doesn’t mean that the experience of aging does not remain universal. “The wealth is a symptom,” says Tropper. “We’re exploring the choices you made years ago to go after this. This was the pot at the end of the rainbow, and then you get there and you realize ‘I’ve spent the better part of my life trying to achieve this, so how come I feel so empty?’ I think everyone in middle age feels this way, but when you surround it with the wealth, there’s a much clearer sense of causality. I think that tension and that contradiction is the same thing that makes the show popular, because people were supposed to be skewering the rich and at the same time are like, ‘Ooh, I wouldn’t mind driving that car.’ It’s that tension within all of us that makes this really interesting.”

Mel (Amanda Peet) finds herself in ho water when a feud with a neighbour escalates precariously.

Now, Odenkirk has teamed up with John Wick creator Derek Kolstad and Nobody producer Marc Provissiero for what’s described as a “kinetic neo-Western” in which he stars as an unassuming substitute sheriff with a troubled past wh, after moving to a small, sleepy town, responds to a bank robbery and unknowingly uncovers something far more explosive. “For Sheriff Ulysses (Odenkirk), his provisional posting to the quaint Midwestern American town of Normal was meant to be a welcome respite from both his marital woes and recent moral injuries in the line of duty,” reads the synopsis. “But when a botched bank robbery interrupts the municipality’s tranquil pace, a dark secret is inadvertently exposed, and Ulysses soon discovers that the town is anything but its namesake.”

A LAST WORD THE

QEven as someone who’s behind the scenes and knows how the proverbial sausage is made, do you ever find yourself shoced by some of these grisly injuries when you’re filming a scen?

A Yeah, and most of these things hang out in the hall. There will literally just be, like, a bunch of heads on a table, or vaginas — I mean, you name it, it’s all out there. And the little room where they keep a lot of this stuff i right at the bottom of the stairs where I come down from my dressing room if I’m gonna go to craft services! [Laughs] There’s just all kinds of cut-up body parts on a dolly.

One time, when I was shadowing John Wells [executive producer and director] . . . I think it was for the fist episode of season two, they opened up that guy’s chest cavity, they were gonna twist his lungs around or whatever. I can’t remember what organ it was they were twisting. But sometimes when I shadow John and I go with him to a technical meeting, I just stand back and observe from a distance. He saw me doing that and he

Katherine LaNasa

said, “Oh, Katherine, you can come up here and take a look at this.” And inside I was dying. I was just screaming inside, “No!” Because it’s so unbelievably graphic, even without the rest of the person’s body attached to it, even without all the fake blood in it.

Q And it’s not shocking in a Halloween, throat-gets-slashed sort of way. It’s because of the insane level of detail they put into each organ and limb . . .

A Oh, it’s layers of fat and tissue. I had an experience last year where there was a fellow who had a gunshot wound. He was sitting on a gurney, it was in between takes and he was right in front of me. I was looking at him and I couldn’t see the “work,” you know what I mean?

I like that it’s kind of messy. I like that Scott Gemmill [creator] colours outside the lines — that Dana can be incredibly warm and loving . . . at the same time being incredibly on edge, and be heroic and be not very well knit together.”

I couldn’t see where it attached. I actually didn’t even know how they did it. It was only then that I realized that the whole front of his body was fake and they literally had pulled through little tiny hairs [all across the prosthetic]. The work is so meticulous. People don’t know.

There was a woman that was playing a pregnant woman this year and I was like, “Wow, they just hired someone with cankles to play a pregnant woman.” And it turned out that they had somehow put some kind of fat ankle on her, but you could see all the way up the rest of her leg. You can’t even see where these guys attach the part. It’s incredible.

QHow does the real-time aspect of the show impact your experience and your process as an actor — embodying a character moment to moment, hour to hour, instead of over a period of days, weeks or years?

AI think there was a little bit of a balance that had to be struck with that in season one, for me. I was aware of it — like, I’m only getting to know these people on this one day, but at the same time, I think for the story to be satisfying, you have to take a journey with each other that probably, in reality, might take a little more than a day. Like the relationship I had with Mel [Taylor Dearden], say . . . Dana might’ve been like that on day one, but I think we certainly felt like these people went on a journey, right? A lot of the characters I’ve known a long time, but with some of the newer

ones, I had to keep that in the back of my mind. But I like the parameters of it, because I think that good acting is always grounded in physical truth. And so, you always have that to focus on, like, “Does my back hurt? How long have I been standing up?” There’s something very pressing about the fact that it is hour to hour, right? There’s always some truth that you can really pinpoint. If you were doing a show where you’re coming home from work the following day and [the viewers] weren’t with you at work, it might be nebulous how much your back hurt or whatever. But these shows, they’re going through every minute with us. We have to hold all those things, those agitations physically, emotionally . . . I like the task of it, because I think it sort of grounds us all in the same reality.

Q The mentoring aspect of the show feels like something that makes it stand out from other hospital dramas — teaching younger doctors and nurses under life-and-death conditions. Do you feel like Dana is, in her head, constantly weighing, “When do I step in, and when do I let the rookies figure it out themselve?”

A I mean, I have children that are 35 and 11. I’ve been mothering my whole life. So, it doesn’t feel like that aspect of the character is much of a reach for me. I think it comes to me very instinctively. It’s a very big part of mothering — when do you micromanage and when do you let them find their ay? When have

The Pitt CRAVE (STREAM)

you given them enough examples for them to find thei way? And certain things, people have to figue out on their own, right? So, yeah, it’s a lot of mothering in that charge nurse job.

QDoes the explosive, instant success that The Pitt achieved compel you to look back on other shows you’ve been on over the years that were great, but didn’t quite connect with audiences and wonder, “What was the magic formula with this one?”

AWell, I think if you’ve been in the business a long time, you’ve seen it happen to shows that you’re on and to shows that you like that just, for whatever reason, don’t make it. And I have been, because of being in the business — I think it’s over 35 years now — just brutally aware of that. It’s funny, you know, over the years it’s always these pilots and everybody gets all verklempt about it. Everyone’s all worked up. “Oh, this is the pilot. This is the one you gotta get.” And it’s never the one. They take themselves really seriously and they see 9,000 people for every role, and it’s gonna be the biggest deal in the world. They go through casting directors and they fie actors . . . and inevitably, you never see that project [laughs].

MEMORABLE ROLES

While the Louisiana native didn’t find her signature role till the indelible Nurse Dana, anyone who’s been watching television over the past four decades has seen plenty of Katherine LaNasa, all across the dial. Some highlights include a two-season run leading NBC’s extended-family sitcom Three Sisters; a stint as Charlie Sheen’s mommyissue-inducing paramour Lydia on Two and a Half Men; personal shopper Gloria Grandbilt on Riverdale spinoff Katy Keene; slippery con artist Sally on Imposters; and savvy podcaster Noa Havilland on crime drama Truth Be Told, opposite Oscar winner Octavia Spencer. That’s in addition to prominent guest appearances on Seinfeld, Longmire, Justifie , Big Love, Judging Amy and, just recently, season one of Daredevil: Born Again.

It’s always something like The Pitt, that seems like it could just be ordinary, where everything works out. I think it’s magic when it happens. I think it’s ephemeral. I don’t know why it worked, I really don’t. I do think that the writing was really well architected and the actors worked really well together, and I think John and [creator R. Scott Gemmill] and Noah [Wyle, star/producer] gave us a really clear thesis of what they were going for, and we just all aimed at that and worked together really well. So, that was lovely. I’ll be rooting for those kids for the rest of my life. It was a really special experience.

QFinally, Dana was assaulted by an angry patient at the end of last season. How has she wrapped her mind around that, and how has that trauma redefined the Dana w pick back up with months later, in season two?

AI think it’s coming into play in the fact that she’s so hypervigilant, and so protective of [new nurse] Emma [Laëtitia Hollard]. And so ticked off t the hospital just trying to glaze over all that by sending donuts — pun intended — [but] none of the real issues facing nurses have been addressed, as we’ve seen with the striking nurses in America.

I think her rage about all that is partially due to the fact that she didn’t press charges [against the patient who accosted her]. And it’s really interesting that she’s now got this sexual assault victim that she really hopes presses charges, you know what I mean? While she doesn’t want to push the patient, in a way that’s a projection of herself; I think there’s grief about the whole thing.

I like that it’s kind of messy. I like that Scott Gemmill colours outside the lines — that Dana can be incredibly warm and loving to Emma and to [homeless patient] Digby [ Charles Baker ], at the same time being incredibly on edge, and be heroic and be not very well knit together. I just like that they’ve been unafraid to let a kind of heroic character like Dana be on tilt.

The powerhouse of energy and life-long vibrancy

What are mitochondria, and how do we spark them?

They are like very tiny powerplants that produce energy in every living cell of our bodies. On average, every cell has 1,500 mitochondria. Can you imagine that for their extremely small size, it’s been said that they produce, gram for gram, 10,000–50,000 times more energy than the sun?

To say that mitochondria are important to human health is grossly understating their role in our

survival. We literally would not be alive without them. They convert our food into energy, so that every other function of our body can occur as it needs to. As we age, our ability to create healthy mitochondria to support our energy demands diminishes.
