GENERATIONAL DIVIDE AT THE HEART OF BEEF
Debuting in 2023, Beef told the darkly comic tale of how a road-rage incident between two strangers (Steven Yeun and Ali Wong) spiralled into an ever-escalating, scorchedearth feud. The popularity of the critically acclaimed Netflix series guaanteed a second season, which arrives this week — although it may not be quite what viewers are expecting.
Neither Yeun nor Wong are involved, with the season introducing a whole new cast and a completely different storyline in what is now identified as an antholoy series. As creator and showrunner Lee Sung Jin explained to Tudum, that was always his plan. “The intention with Beef was always to have it in anthology,” he said. “We wanted the feeling of this season’s beef to be a bit more passive-aggressive. It’s more about the internal repression of rage that you see in the workplace.”
In the new season, a Gen Z couple witnesses a startling fiht between their millennial boss and his wife. Recently engaged Ashley (Cailee Spaeny) and Austin (Charles Melton), both lower-level staff t an exclusive country club, find themselves becoming entangled in the unraveling marriage of their general manager, Josh (Oscar Isaac), and his wife, Lindsay (Carey Mulligan), triggering chess moves and manipulations that ripple far beyond the country club. “Through favours and coercion, both couples vie for the approval of the elitist club’s billionaire owner, Chairwoman Park (Youn Yuh Jung), who struggles to manage her own scandal involving her second husband, Doctor Kim (Song Kang Ho),” adds the synopsis.

According to Jin, Beef’s new season will pit Austin and Ashley, whose relationship has never been tested, against Josh and Lindsay, a longtime couple who have been together for many years. “Austin and Ashley think all they need is each other and the beach,” he pointed out. “So when we meet them, they are thrust into intersecting with our millennial couple. It’ll be interesting to see with these two how they react to life’s fist real struggles.”

The season kicks off wi a visit from Grammy-winning musician Jon Batiste, known to viewers of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert for his several seasons as the show’s bandleader, with the New Orleans native showing Garten how to make his mother’s famous Louisiana-style red beans and rice. Later in the season, Garten will welcome Emmy-winning actress Allison Janney, Today alum Hoda Kotb and journalist Michael Barbaro of podcast The Daily. “Watching Be My Guest is like spending the day with Ina and her friends cooking, laughing and sharing personal stories,” says Warner Bros. Discovery’s Betsy Ayala. “Our audience looks forward to the intimate conversations and fantastic food every season.”

Following last year’s Searching for Spain, Eva Longoria embarks on another food-centred travelogue, this time focusing on France. As she visits various regions — including Provence, Bordeaux, Brittany and Alsace — Longoria will sample regional delicacies while exploring the rich history of French cuisine.
It was way back in 1989 that American Gladiators burst onto the television landscape, presenting amateur athletes competing against the show’s team of “gladiators” in a series of competitions testing strength and agility. After going off the air in 1996, the series was briefly revived i 2008, and is now returning with a new iteration hosted by WWE star The Miz (a.k.a. Mike Mizanin) and Rocsi Diaz. Contenders face off against 16 new gladiators, competing in classic events like Joust, Powerball, Hang Tough and the Wall, in addition to high-impact new events such as Collision and the Ring. “Only one man and one woman will conquer the Arena, claim US$100,000, and earn the title of American Gladiator Champion,” declares the logline.

Indeed, season 22 of The Bachelorette was cancelled just days before its premiere. The reason? A disturbing video from 2023 resurfaced online of new leading lady Taylor Frankie Paul seemingly attacking then-boyfriend Dakota Mortensen — tossing a chair that inadvertently struck her daughter. There have been allegations of domestic abuse made by both parties, and People reports that a police investigation remains open. Paul, of course, is also among the stars of Hulu/Disney+’s
The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives. Reports indicate filmin on season five of that reality hit has paused, and some hav speculated the show could move forward, sans Ms. Paul.
Luther Back on the Case?
Idris Elba as Luther is one of the best cop performances I’ve seen. Always happy when he comes around again. Are they doing another season anytime soon?

First airing way back in 2010 on the BBC, the saga of troubled criminal profiler DCI John Luther ran for five seasons — oft interrupted by leading man Idris Elba’s rising status as an in-demand movie star.
Yet Elba and series creator Neil Cross have remained devoted to the character. The latest incarnation came via a 2023 Netflix original film calle Luther: The Fallen Sun
And we’re happy to report that production is underway on another, currently untitled film, also for Netflix — liely eyeing a 2027 release.
Per the synopsis: “When a wave of brutal, seemingly random murders hits London, Luther is secretly called back into service. But how can he save London when everyone on all sides seems to want him dead?”
Returning right alongside the eternally troubled sleuth will be his sometimes-nemesis, sometimes-soulmate Alice Morgan — played by Ruth Wilson. The uncanny sociopath was last seen in season fiv, plummeting — Moriarty-style — to what was apparently not her death.
Also back in the mix is Dermot Crowley as Luther’s wily boss, DSU Martin Schenk.

Now that season four of Netflixs smash-hit Regencyera romance has ended — with Benedict (Luke Thompson) and Sophie (Yerin Ha) getting their hardwon happily ever after — it’s time for another Bridgerton sibling to wade into the dating pool. In season fiv, it’ll be Francesca (Hannah

Soul starred as Detective Ken “Hutch” Hutchinson in 92 episodes of the iconic action series that ran from 19751979. He played opposite Detective Dave Starsky (Paul Michael Glaser) on ABC for four seasons — and along the way even had a hit single, “Don’t Give Up on Us,” which reached No. 1 on the Billboard charts.
While Soul did not actually make a “movie” based on Stephen King’s vampire thriller Salem’s Lot, he starred in a four-hour miniseries in 1979. It was the first of the authors macabre tales to get a major TV treatment.
His character was named Ben Mears — an author who returns to his old hometown of Salem’s Lot, Maine, and quickly finds that an unimaginable evi

The actress furthermore mused: “Michaela . . . really struggles to show vulnerability to people that she doesn’t know, especially because she’s had to hide so many parts of herself. She’s used to having all these walls up. I’m excited to tear down those walls
and have her let Francesca in. I’m excited for people to see her wanted so deeply and so badly . . . I’m excited for people to see Michaela yearn for Francesca.”
Added her co-star Dodd: “At the moment, [Francesca] is in such a devastating position. So I am really looking forward to her feeling like she deserves love. She’s always trying to get things right, and so much has gone wrong for her. I’m really excited for her to experience feeling loved [again] . . . and feeling enough within herself, as well.”

Moving Forward, Chained to the Past
It’s among the most provocative series in recent memory . . . and an undeniable case of absence making the heart grow fonder, as Euphoria last dropped our jaws and pounded our pulses way back in 2022.
Now, HBO’s coming-of-age thriller returns, completely resetting the narrative with a time jump that’s even longer than the show’s hiatus. Picking up fie years later, season three finds our tortured protagonists long out of high school, toiling through the uncertainty of their early 20s.
The network’s official lline for the new season cryptically teases: “A group of childhood friends wrestle with the virtue of faith, the possibility of redemption and the problem of evil.”
But speaking at an HBO event in London in late 2025, creator Sam Levinson got a little more specifi. “Cassie [Sydney Sweeney] is living in the suburbs with Nate [Jacob Elordi]. They’re engaged and she’s very addicted

to social media and envious of what appears to be the big lives that all of her high school classmates are living at this point in time,” Levinson said (via CNN).
Speaking of those “big lives,” aspiring writer Lexi (Maude Apatow) is the assistant to an acclaimed TV showrunner played by new cast member Sharon Stone, and Jules (Hunter Schafer) is in art school. Despite his battle with ALS, the late Eric Dane was able to reprise his role as Jules’ erstwhile illicit lover, Cal. Finally, recovering addict Rue (Zendaya) is once again immersed in the drug world, findingherself in Mexico, indebted to ruthless dealer Laurie (Martha Kelly) and finding “innvative” ways to pay off hat she owes.

A FLIP OF THE COIN
Debuting in summer 2024, this quirky German romp returns for a second heist, picking back up with mismatched partners-incrime Charly (Frederick Lau) and Joseph (Christoph Krutzler) as they embark on a mad dash through Vienna and Bangkok to track down their now-missing coin — and keep themselves and their families alive.

Dr. Robby (Noah Wyle) is just itchin’ to climb on that motorcycle and ride off into his sabbatical sunset . . . but a few of his colleagues have begun to worry it’ll be a one-way trip for their burnt-out leader.

This new six-parter is set in the fictional elsh town of Morfa Halen, where a haunted sleuth must face the ghosts of her past. Per British network Sky’s breakdown: “As a oncein-a-generation storm begins to gather far out at sea, former detective turned teacher Jackie Ellis [Reilly] discovers the body of her nine-year-old pupil, Cefin, seemingly drowned. The discovery sends shockwaves through the community, reviving the ghost of an unsolved cold case that rocked the town three years prior — the disappearance of Jackie’s niece, Nessa, which cost her career.”
The crime also brings Jackie’s estranged partner, Det. Eric Bull (Trying’s Rafe Spall), back to town. It’s a prickly reunion, to say the least. But when it becomes clear these two cases are linked, the duo must quickly put aside their differences — give that the looming storm threatens to wash away their evidence.
Speaking with the Royal Television Society, creator Claire Oakley detailed crafting a taut murder mystery that is also “Trojan-horsing” a message about the environment. “What happens if we can’t protect our children? This idea of protection was a big theme for me,” she mused. “The salt marshes protect us from coastal erosion and rising sea levels, so I was looking at what happens if we don’t protect the things that protect us.”

A big part of the show has been the idea that Amy, with her memory loss, gets the chance to change her ways. But in season two, Jake makes an interesting point of, “Well, I actually fell in love with the person everyone’s telling you was so mean and horrible . . .”

AI love that part of the show . . . It’s this discovery of identity. “Who do I wanna be?”
And yes, she gets a chance to do things differently — but if you don’t remember what you did in the fist place, it’s really hard to do them differently.
And I think what we get to see in season two is a little bit of how all of these aspects that we’ve met of this woman are part of who she is. You know, there’s not “Bad Amy” and “Good Amy.” They’re all a part of one complicated human being.
The real struggle for Amy this season is that she feels particularly split between the woman she remembers herself to be eight years previous to the accident — who was still married to the love of her life, had two children, and was different than the woman she became after the death of her son — and yet she wants to live in the present. She knows she can’t go back to that time. Everyone else has moved on — but she’s not there yet. She hasn’t been able to move on because she doesn’t have her memories. Getting her memories back
becomes paramount to Amy’s idea of how she is going to recover.
QHas delving into a character whose psyche is so very fractured forced you, as Molly, to reflect on what forged your identit?
ABecause I’m an actor, I probably have more of that self-awareness. I do think about those things. I think about identity and how we are formed. The thing that’s always excited me most as an actor is the curiosity around why people do the things they do, and what’s behind the curtain. There’s the behaviour and then there’s wherever that’s coming from. That’s the work I do as an actor. Those are the things I wonder about when I am thinking about other people. And certainly, I have done that exploration on myself. By the time you’re 50, I think most of us have a pretty good idea of how we came to be ourselves.
One of the joys of that is to get to that place where, if you’re in that kind of awareness, you can choose whether or not you follow your fist gut reaction. I think that’s more something Amy’s learning how to do. It’s not so much that she’s trying to be a different person, but she is trying to become more self-aware — in the context of a black hole of her memory [laughs].

A Little Help From My Fans

rom Big Little Lies to The Undoing to Presumed Innocent , creator David E. Kelley has proven himself a savant at adapting bestselling books into explosively popular TV series. And well, he’s at it again.
This time, however, the Emmy winner is going far afield of his usual crime drama bailiwick.
Based on Rufi Thorp ’s 2024 novel, Margo’s Got Money Troubles follows the titular aspiring writer (Elle Fanning), whose grand plans of literary greatness are interrupted after an affair with her married college professor (Michael Angarano) results in unplanned pregnancy. When dad wants nothing to do with this little bundle of mouth-to-feed, Margo is
forced to improvise. So, she starts an OnlyFans page — posting explicit photos and videos to earn “tips” from subscribers.
Beyond just a payday, it turns into a surprisingly fulfilling creative outlet for this frustrated artist. Alas, while it does solve Margo’s money troubles, the stigma around this line of work leads to troubles of a different sort.
At heart, the show is a tender, charming comedy about a relatably messy family — a family that

He scored a pair of Oscars for prestige drama Green Book in 2019, but Peter Farrelly is still best known for raunchy, over-the-top comedies like Dumb and Dumber and There’s Something About Mary (co-written and co-directed with his brother Bobby). And indeed, even with the massive success of Green Book, Farrelly hasn’t abandoned his kooky roots.
This latest romp casts Mark Wahlberg and Paul Walter Hauser as two marketing execs who head to Brazil during the World Cup to pitch a soccer sponsorship campaign. While there, they end up sparking a global scandal — forcing them to “outrun furious fans, criminals and power-hungry official to salvage their careers and make it home alive.” As Prime Video teases: “The R-rated film delivers unapologetically absurd humour with outrageous storylines.” The script hails from Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, while the supporting cast includes Benjamin Bratt, Sacha Baron Cohen, Eric André and SNL icon Molly Shannon.

AS HE CONTINUES TO appear in both film and television, Benjamin Bratt’s schedule will be jam-packed in the near future. The Andor actor — seen in the Prime Video action-comedy Balls Up, which debuts this week — recently signed on to another movie, Ally Clark, in which he’ll star alongside Viola Davis (How to Get Away with Murder) and Jason Clarke (Brotherhood).
Meanwhile, Bratt has also been cast in prominent recurring roles in not one but two different series: Hulu’s The Land and the upcoming second season of Prime Video’s Bosch spinoff, Ballard
Busy Year for Bratt
The Land is the latest from This Is Us creator Dan Fogelman, set within the competitive world of the NFL. Christopher Meloni (Law & Order: Organized Crime) leads the cast as Danny, head coach of an NFL team. While little is known about Bratt’s character, reports indicate that he will likely appear as coach for a rival team, who once worked for Danny. Bratt joins a cast that also includes William H. Macy (Shameless), Mandy Moore (This Is Us), Chace Crawford
(The Boys) and Bridget Moynahan (Blue Bloods).
“It’s about a football team, nominally the Cleveland Browns. It’s called The Land because that’s what people from Cleveland call it,” Macy told Deadline. “They’re brilliant scripts. They’re Shakespearean. It’s about football, but, oh, my lord, the plots are so profound, and I’m having the time of my life.”
As for Ballard, Bratt will play former DEA Agent Ryan Ainsley, who opted for a simpler life by settling down on his Idaho ranch before being pulled out of retirement by LAPD Detective Renée Ballard (Maggie Q), who runs the department’s coldcase division.
Previously, Bratt was seen in Disney+ Star Wars saga Andor as Bail Organa, a role he took over from Jimmy Smits when prior commitments prevented his return as the political leader he played in Obi-Wan Kenobi and a few Star Wars films.
Prior to that, Bratt appeared in the 2024 films Millers in Marriage and Mother of the Bride, and guest-starred as a fictionalized ersion of himself in Maya Rudolph’s Apple TV comedy Loot

DANIELS JOINS THE MORNING SHOW
Jeff Daniel has been a frequent guest star on the latest season of Apple TV hit Shrinking, and his association with the streaming service will continue with his next project. Deadline reports that the Dumb and Dumber star has signed on for the upcoming fifth season of The Morning Show, produced by and starring Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon.
Daniels is taking on what’s described as “a major recurring role” to play Lukas, “a selfmade billionaire and founder of a well-known investment firm”
Daniels won’t be the only new face in the series’ fifth season. Also entering the fray is Grey’s Anatomy alum Jesse Williams, who’s been cast as UBN’s newest head of news (described as “a brash pot-stirrer with a talent for grabbing and keeping an audience”). Also joining the cast is singer/actress Reneé Rapp (The Sex Lives of College Girls), who makes her return to acting after successfully launching herself as a pop star.

Rapp will play Samantha, “a young rising star in the UBN news division determined to make it in media on her own terms.”
Current cast members Billy Crudup, Mark Duplass, Karen Pittman, Nestor Carbonell, Nicole Beharie and Jon Hamm are confirmed to return, although it remains to be seen whether newcomers Aaron Pierre, William Jackson Harper, Boyd Holbrook, Marion Cotillard and Jeremy Irons will also be back.
Early last year, Daniels’ name was also attached to another series that was reportedly in development at Apple TV, though there haven’t been any updates since. Inspired by Dana Brown’s memoir and written by Daniel Goldfarb (Julia), Dilettante has been described as a coming-of-age story set in the cutthroat world of magazines in 1990s New York. If the project ever moves forward, Daniels would star as a powerful magazine editor, said to be inspired by former Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter.
With production underway in Venice Beach, it appears as if all the pieces are finally coming together for Fx’s highly anticipated reboot of Baywatch
Former Arrow star Stephen Amell was the first actor hired as a series regular role, cast as Hobie Buchannon, son of Mitch (played by David Hasselhoff in the original series), who has followed in his old man’s footsteps and is now a Baywatch captain himself.
Also joining the series is Jessica Belkin (Elle) as Charlie, the daughter Hobie never knew he had until she showed up on his doorstep, eager to carry on the family’s lifeguard legacy.
Model Brooks Nader (Love Thy Nader) is also on board, taking on what is only her second scripted role, playing
lifeguard captain Selene, whose different approach to saving lives is a constant source of friction.
In addition, Shay Mitchell (Pretty Little Liars ) will play Trina, a former lawyer who quit her job at a top-tier law firm to become a lifeguard. The roster of series regulars also includes: Hassie Harrison (Yellowstone) as Nat; TikTok star Noah Beck as rookie Luke; Thaddeus LaGrone (The Land) as Brad, a former Marine; and David Chokachi, reprising the role of Cody Madison, whose bar and grill serves as a second home for the lifeguards. Meanwhile, Former gymnast Livvy Dunne will also appear in the recurring role of an enthusiastic junior lifeguard.

IIF RECENT HISTORY has taught us to fear personal information in the hands of tech billionaires, The Audacity is here to show us what happens when people with no ethical boundaries really get their juices flwing. Created by Succession writer Jonathan Glatzer, the satirical take on Silicon Valley’s finest stars Billy Magnussen as Duncan Park, the morally questionable CEO of tech company Hypergnosis. Duncan is data mining on a level that past political administrations would find illeal, but the current one appears to encourage (See: DOGE). He feels compelled to use that information to blackmail those that won’t satisfy his every need.

Among the people he feels a need to control is his own therapist JoAnne Felder (Barry’s Sarah Goldberg), who in turn engages in patient-cleaned insider trading to make up for her disdain for her man child of a client. Terrifying? Yes. Funny? Astonishingly so. “I was surprised when I watched the episodes, how funny the show is. And I’ve read all of them and I was in them,” says comedian Rob Corddry. “But my character is not in a comedy.”
No. In fact, Corddry’s character — Tom Ruffage, Deputy Undersecretary of Veterans Affairs — is in begrudging need of these tech billionaires, and initially feels like the straight man to these wealthy clowns. “Tom has been given a mission and he has thrown
himself headfist into solving this problem that is the backlog at the VA, because if he doesn’t, people will literally die. He’s also a closeted gay man from the ‘Don’t Ask Don’t Tell’ era of the military, and he has PTSD, and he self-medicates with alcohol,” says Corddry. “And while he does not like Silicon Valley, he doesn’t understand just how poisonous it is. And he is definitely orruptible.”
Whether you’re laughing or crying, odds are that the characters on this show won’t leave you unaffected. Corddry recalls the fist time he read Glatzer’s scripts for the show, and the effect they had on him. “Every time I read something that I like and might want to do, I think, ‘This is the best thing I’ve ever read.’ But this was the best thing — literally the best thing,” says Corddry. Part of it was that everyone can see themselves a victim of these people and their products. “Do you accept cookies?” asks Corddry. “Do you know how much of your persona you are signing away? You’re signing a contract when you do that. And it’s insane how intricate the system they have designed is to end up knowing us better than we know ourselves.”

And then there is troubled tech billionaire Carl Bardolph (Zach Galifianaki ), who is as bored with the industry as he is dying to be part of it. “Some of them have redeemable traits . . . I think,” says Corddry. “Anushka is probably the trickiest because she’s the ethicist at Cupertino, which is our Apple stand-in, and I think she probably, in her heart and soul, knows that she wants to do good, but will

probably end up going to hell. Duncan, I don’t think he’s redeemable. The way Billy plays him, too — he’s so brilliant playing that character that I don’t want to see a redeemed Duncan.”
The idea that money corrupts is nothing new, but the power of the tech billionaire is an evil we’ve only recently started to fully contend with.
“I understand that [tech billionaires] probably, for the most part, most of them think they mean well. And no one’s going to argue that they aren’t some of the smartest guys in the room,” says Corddry. “But I think ultimately, when you start making billions of dollars, it becomes something else and they all turn into Dr. Evil.” Now, in fiction, despicable characters are hardly a turn off, as television shows from Seinfeld to Breaking Bad have shown us time and time again. “Isn’t that funny?” marvels

Corddry. “I think the majority of people tend to enjoy these — I don’t want to say antiheroes because that doesn’t apply to The Audacity — but these kinds of immoral people, maybe because we feel like we can compare ourselves to them favourably.”
For the funnyman, best known for his work on Ballers, Childrens Hospital and his long-running gig on The Daily Show, middle age has opened up a broader range of career opportunities. “The audience, I’m sure, has some expectations of me, but also on the other hand, an audience is pretty savvy and they understand that to do comedy, you must also be sort of at least as serviceable in drama,” he says. “It seems to me that, as you get older, comedic actors tend maybe to gravitate more toward dramatic roles, whether that be because they’ve acquired some wisdom from all their experience and they have gravitas or they are just grey and ragged looking.” But in terms of job descriptions, Corddry is looking for one particular quality in a script. “It’s usually just as simple as, ‘Does it fit in my mouth? Do I know how to do this?’ If I read something and say, ‘I can do this,’ or I know how to get to a place where I can do this, then I’m in. As long as there’s good people and a good thing, that’s what I need to be happy in life.”
Luckily for Corddry, the deck was stacked with good people to work with in The Audacity. “We had a really, really great time,” says Corddry. “I’ve worked with Zach before and it was great to be able to hang out with him on set again. Simon’s another comedy guy that I was able to reconnect with. And I made a lifelong friend in Billy.
There’s not a person in that cast that I, myself, wouldn’t cast in something.” When asked if that is a professional draw, Corddry says, “It’s the whole goal. Especially in Hollywood, where I guess there are some bad apples out there. Really, the secret to happiness in this business is just doing good stuff with people tht aren’t d**ks. And that usually comes from the creator on down. Jonathan, I want him to be my dad. So, I knew he was going to cast a group of very, very good people like himself.”

pocalyptic dramas are common across the TV landscape. That said, Paradise did not, at fist glance, seem to fit the enre. Opening on a luxury planned community for the rich and powerful, it wasn’t till the end of episode one back in 2025 that viewers were clued in to the fact that “Paradise” was actually an underground bunker, built by billionaires and politicians to weather the storm of an environmental apocalypse.
A few lucky average folks were brought along with them, including Secret Service agent Xavier Collins (Sterling K. Brown) — who spent last season digging into the murder of President Cal Bradford (James Marsden) — a man he hated for not offering a warning that would’ve allowed Xavier to save his wife Teri (Enuka Okuma). But, savvy script-flipper tht he is, creator Dan Fogelman (who previously worked with Brown to Emmy-winning success on This Is Us) ended season

reflect on the thrills — and th humanity — of this apocalyptic drama’s second season
one with the reveal that Teri and countless others were still alive up on the surface, setting Xavier on a mission to track down his lost love and bring her back to the bunker, where their two kids await . . . even as Paradise itself descends into chaos, corruption and insurrection.
It opened up a whole new world for the show, and a whole new take on the postapocalypse — one that was less defined y Mad Max-imalist carnage than bittersweet humanity.
Chatting with TV Week about this second season, star and exec producer Brown explains: “There’s gonna be things that are evocative of [other] post-apocalyptic things, whether it’s The Road or The Last of Us. You wanna make sure that you’re telling your version of that. Will there be overlap inevitably? Of course. There should also be key differences. You just wanna make sure you’re not doing what somebody else has done — that you have your own very strong stamp and perspective on how it gets done.”
A part of that stamp was, undeniably, the addition of a true movie star to the cast in the form of Shailene Woodley (late of Big Little Lies). In fact, the fist episode of this new season boldly ditched the rest of the ensemble, centring on Woodley’s character — grizzled (and very pregnant) survivor Annie — as the audience sees just what life has been like on the surface. Woodley tells TV Week: “What stood out to me
about this show is it’s obviously a post-apocalyptic world that has a lot of massive trials and challenges — but the story really revolved around human connection, and human relationships and dynamics. I felt like it was incredibly relatable texturally, even if the context was far out of reach.”
Annie is one of the fist people Xavier meets in his odyssey to the uncertain world above — the two of them forming a crucial bond that, like much of Fogelman and Brown’s work together, evokes more than a few tears. “I think Xavier pushes Annie to consider the idea of trusting, and Annie pushes Xavier to soften and to round his edges a little bit,” Woodley muses. “In a way, they’re both actually softening one another’s edges . . . even if their edges look different.”

on a mission to storm the gates of Paradise. Speaking on the appeal of exploring characters in a wasteland largely devoid of technology and other creature comforts, the Scottish actor reflects: “ou’re completely stripped of all these pacifies of social media, phones . . . The way that society kinda is now, we’re constantly escaping through different means. When all that’s taken away, you’re just left with yourself, and I get weirdly excited about even that prospect — to just be so alone with who you are.”
As fans well know by now, a crucial episode at the midway point of season two leads to a passing of the baton in terms of Xavier’s partner in this post-apocalypse — as he’s forced to leave Annie behind and forges ahead to reunite with his wife. For Brown, it was these partnerships that informed and unlocked key parts of a character accustomed to keeping his own counsel.
“I think we see in episode two, with the kids [he meets after the crash], that Xavier will do whatever is necessary to survive, and to make sure that the people he considers to be in his care will survive . . . There’s a certain hardening that can happen to Xavier. ‘If anybody stands in the way of me and my wife getting back to my children, they have to go.’

“And it was interesting to see Teri step in and be like, ‘Listen, I know you have your way of doing things, but please trust me. I can de-escalate the situation.’ Seeing him trust his wife and seeing the two of them work together was a really interesting colour — because he’d been a lone wolf. He had a partnership with Annie, then a lone wolf, and then now a partnership with Teri. I like seeing how he listens and responds to the people that he’s with, because he doesn’t just override them.”
As to the secrets that still lurk in Paradise, for anyone yet to watch the recently debuted season final, Doherty teases shocks for even the savviest viewer . . . not to mention revolution leader Link himself: “You think you know, but I swear to God you don’t — he doesn’t even know.”

Mary (Elisabeth Moss), wealthy philanthropist Eleanor (Kerry Washington) and trophy wife with philanthropic interests Nancy (Kate Mara). The three are a constant presence in each other’s lives, and know all each other’s secrets. Or do they? When Nancy winds up murdered, presumably by the man she was having an affair with, her two friends come to find tht they actually don’t know everything there is to know about each other.
That’s the premise of Imperfect Women, based on Araminta Hall’s novel of the same name. When Moss read the psychological thriller, she was

immediately drawn in by its themes.
“The main thing that I loved was the exploration of friendship and the fact that it felt really honest,” she says.
“The book has a very specific structue where it goes Eleanor, Nancy, Mary. You’ve got Eleanor’s story and you’re so absorbed in this character that you think that’s the whole story. And then [the perspective] changes and it’s totally different than what you thought it was. That structure, which I fell in love with when I read the book, was the most important thing to try to preserve.”
To achieve that, Moss enlisted Emmy-winning director Lesli Linka Glatter. Having put her stamp on Homeland, Pretty Little Liars and, more recently, Zero Day, she was keen to explore the secrets of the three main characters. “I love the idea of things not being what they appear to be, and you have to dig deeper to see what’s going on underneath the surface,” she

It was also the complex nature of the women at the heart of the show that drew series creator Annie Weisman to the project. “I’m always drawn to interesting female characters and it’s exciting when a story has not one, but three individual women at its centre,” says Weisman, whom Moss had passed on the book to. “Often the key relationship in a story would be a romantic relationship or a workplace relationship. But in this show, female friendship is really given its due. It’s central in a way like it is in my life. I thought that that was a really interesting avenue, especially for a thriller.”
For Weisman, having three female protagonists gave her an opportunity to explore the differences of each character. “What’s interesting to me is to show the range of roles that women play, that we all play, in our lives,” she says. “One of the reasons I like writing female characters is just they have so much going on. It can be frightening to be a woman in the world. It can be dangerous. We all

feel vulnerable a lot. So, we build up these layers and these performances to keep ourselves safe. I happen to find tht a really fascinating thing to write about, and I think it’s a really fascinating challenge to give to an actress to express and inhabit.”
While it feels like shows with women at the helm are becoming more common, Moss, Mara and Washington — all of whom have headlined their own series — say finding material that focuses on a female protagonist, let alone three, is still rare. “The centring of women and women’s stories and not being the accessory to a male story is important,” says Washington, when asked what exactly a “complex” character is. “I do love playing supporting characters as well, but when I’m looking for complexity, an understanding that this person is at the centre of the story is part of it. And I love that, on this show, you have three women who sit at the centre of the story at different times. That’s so, so cool.”

While the structure of having the story told from three vantage points was the obvious challenge to adapting the source material, it also allowed for the writers and actors to find dimensions to characters that would normally not be part of a linear story arc. “Each character gets to play themselves in a supporting role in each of the other women’s stories, so she gets to play a version of herself that is seen on the outside, and then they get to play their inner life,” explains Weissman. “This structure gave us such a gift because we knew that each of [the actresses] would get their moment. And they’re gracious in the way that they will each happily serve the other stories.”
Of course there are no imperfect women without their imperfect men. The all-star cast is rounded out with Joel Kinnaman as Nancy’s husband Robert, Corey Stoll as Mary’s husband Howard and Leslie Odom, Jr. as Eleanor’s brother Donovan. “The men are as essential in this story,” says Linka Glatter. “The complicated inter-dynamics of the husbands, the brothers, the family relationships, it’s all interwoven.” For Washington, her relationship with Odom’s character proved to be one of her biggest surprises as an actress. “In real life, I’m an only child and I haven’t really been able to play sibling dynamics that much,” she says “Often when I’m onscreen with a man, I’m either his love interest or he’s mine. Although the focus of the 10-episode drama is finding a kille, Washington feels like Imperfect Women tonally had room for more than just suspense. “We’ve all worked really hard on making the characters have the right balance of humanity. And I think the tone of the show is something that we’re all very proud of — that it is sexy, juicy, thrilling and dangerous, but also that there is humour and romance,” she says. The writing is also full of all kinds of questionable, not quite best friend appropriate behaviour. “Well, that’s the really most fun challenge — to justify the unjustifiabl, right?” says Weisman. “I think we’re all drawn to that as human beings, where you lean in to hear a story about someone doing something unforgivable. And then there’s the challenge of really humanizing that, because we all do terrible things. We all make mistakes.”

Q The original NCIS is currently on its 23rd season, with no signs of slowing down. It’s launched a whole bunch of successful spinoffs, including Sydney. What do you think it is exactly about this franchise that’s proven so enduringly popular?
A Well, one of the things that we say is, “You come for the crime and stay for the characters, and stay for the chemistry.” I think that is what it is. We have, across the franchise, all of these compelling cases, but you have a team that is so dynamic and so diverse and have all these amazing relationships — that’s what makes people, I think, keep tuning in. We want to see how their relationships grow and form and change, all while solving a murder. It’s a simple formula, but a very effective one.
Q And how does the Australian setting tweak that NCIS formula?
A Visually, just the diversity of Australia is huge. We have the beautiful glittering harbour, but then we
go to the Blue Mountains this season, so there’s a whole different terrain of woodland trees. We go to the Outback, so it’s just dry, red, dirt desert . . .
There’s something about it which I think adds danger to certain cases. It throws our characters into different terrains and we see how they act accordingly to their surroundings. That’s something you can’t fake. Being there in real-time as actors, as crew, and reacting to the different elements in the heat and the creatures, it just adds a level of authenticity that you can’t fake on a set or a studio, you know?

Q As an English woman who’s been working Down Under for three seasons, are there any Australianisms you’ve picked up and incorporated into your real, daily life?
It’s really intriguing to start uncovering all of these things from the past that now implement the team we know and love — and how that may fracture them, how it may force them to be stronger.”
A I say, “Oh, righto” a lot. [Laughs] I say that probably every single day.

Q And, in the same vein, how has Supervisory Special Agent Michelle Mackey been changed by her new environment? How is she different than when we first met her
A She’s definitely mving towards [being] a slightly more open, warmer woman than we’ve known before. We’ve seen her very steadfast, quite direct, sometimes a little cold, but also very fier, very headstrong . . . We’ve seen a lot of that. But this season, we do delve into cracks in her armour. We delve into her vulnerability a lot more, and we see her warming up and allowing herself to be warmer with the team.
But we also see her being tested in ways that we’ve never seen before, which forces out emotions that we’ve never seen before. So, that’s been really fun to play with for me — to discover what Mackey’s like in those spaces.
Q The team was a very volatile group to start with, given that they were actually made up of two different teams. That clash was embodied largely by Mackey and Aussie team leader JD [Todd Lasance], and their relationship has continued to be at the heart of the show. How has that dynamic evolved over the years?
A We’ve seen them get closer. We’ve seen their trust build. We’ve seen them share
things with each other, which helped to show that level of trust and partnership — which I love so much.
We see the furthering of that this season, but we do start season three with a little bit of friction just in the sense that Mackey is dealing with the fallout of Darwin [the mission at the end of season two]. She trusted the wrong person and she maybe can’t necessarily trust her gut at the moment. She’s wrestling with that.
We also see JD’s opinion of her choice in Darwin. There’s an element of . . . they’re not necessarily on the same page at the top of the season. But we do get the sense that no matter what they’re going through, they will always have each other’s back. They will always hold each other accountable, but will always be there for one another through the thick and thin of it all. I think that’s what’s so wonderful about the two of them, and it shows the strength of their relationship.
QAll told, what is Agent Mackey’s greatest strength and what’s her Achilles heel?
AI think her greatest strength is her ability to run headfist into danger, and to not usually second-guess herself. The Achilles heel, potentially, is the reverse of that — the thought that she’s got something wrong and now has to question herself. When that starts happening, that’s when we are rocking the boat of who Mackey is — because her bedrock is, “I can trust

Q The fact that this squad is made up of Americans and Australians makes it so different than if the team were entirely American or entirely Australian. How exactly does that enhance the drama?
A I think it adds just this wonderful culture clash, which will always be fun to delve into. Like you said, the “Australianisms” — we can really play up on those. Having characters that aren’t Australian, they get to learn things as well.
And if we take Mac and JD for example, we have the Aussie larrikin — laid-back, easygoing JD — vs. the American — confident and hedstrong Mackey. Even just in that sense, those cultural differences they bring always are fun to pull out in different episodes and different storylines.
I don’t think that will ever grow old, because there’s always stuff tht can be found in those dynamics.

You’re a Brit playing an American here. When you have to put on an accent that’s not your

A native of England, Olivia Swann had very few screen credits prior to climbing aboard the NCIS juggernaut — but her career was, nonetheless, already Legend-ary.
Yes, prior to sailing the seas, she sailed through time and space as a member of another motley crew on DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. Joining the comic book series in 2018 for its fourth season and sticking around through its seventh and final on, Swann played Astra Logue — the queen of hell who started off hell-bent on taking reveng against occult private eye John Constantine and his fellow time travellers, before ultimately joining their crew.
Further showcasing a penchant for aquatic intrigue, in 2023 Swann starred in acclaimed white-water rapids thriller River Wild, opposite Leighton Meester and Adam Brody.
own, does that help you disappear into a character? Or is it maybe annoying, in that you have to constantly wonder if you’re staying consistent moment to moment?
A Honestly, it goes day by day. Some days, I don’t worry about it, I don’t think about it. Other days, I’m like, “My mouth hurts!” and it’s at the forefront of your brain. But Sean [Sagar] — who plays DeShawn — he’s British, and what we both do is we stay in accent all day.
As soon as I get into the car in the morning, I’m American until I wrap 12 hours later. It helps make it feel way more natural than if I was dipping in and out. We have a dialect coach, who is there to help tweak anything. But it has kind of become second nature doing NCIS
On Legends of Tomorrow, I would literally drop out as soon as they say “Cut!” But on this one, I think it has just helped the naturalism, it’s helped the feel of Mackey for me to maintain that — to eliminate as much of having to worry about it as possible.
QYou mentioned the show’s charactercentric appeal. On that front, beyond cases of the week, what new thematic territory do we delve into with season three?
AThis season is very much about the past catching up with you, and that is very true for a lot of our characters. So, we delve into backstory. We delve into decisions made in the past. We delve into things that have happened in the past for our characters and how they are now affecting them in present day — including Mackey. We discover there’s a conspiracy theory that’s an overarching storyline, which links to her in some way.
It’s really intriguing to start uncovering all of these things from the past that now implement the team we know and love — and how that may fracture them, how it may force them to be stronger. It’s gonna be a really electrifying season, with that theme running through the whole season.

What are mitochondria, and how do we spark them?
They are like very tiny powerplants that produce energy in every living cell of our bodies. On average, every cell has 1,500 mitochondria. Can you imagine that for their extremely small size, it’s been said that they produce, gram for gram, 10,000–50,000 times more energy than the sun?
To say that mitochondria are important to human health is grossly understating their role in our
survival. We literally would not be alive without them. They convert our food into energy, so that every other function of our body can occur as it needs to.
