rleans has something for everyone, and artists from this region, as well as states and even countries away, can be found working in every corner. The spots that countless visitors and residents savor spur artists to create onsite, as well as to create more detailed pieces back in their studios. According to Sharon McGauley, whose work sells internationally, “Orleans is an incredibly inspiring place to paint. From the ponds with indefatigable swimmers and goggle-eyed kids attached to floats, to Skaket Beach and its gorgeous colors and shapes ever-changing with the tides, to oceanside dunes and dramatic sunsets, to distinctive architecture, I find this place endlessly captivating.”
Sunlit Haven, Jonathan McPhillips, Addison Art Gallery
Much praise stems from the Cape’s unique light. “Orleans’ geography and atmosphere enhance the beautiful light of Cape Cod. Perhaps it is the power of the ocean so near the tranquility of the bay and ponds. The air is often charged with a magic mist that draws one to paint. Truly, I have had some of the most enthralling visual experiences in Orleans,” says master artist Jonathan McPhillips. Artists are also inspired by Orleans’ residents and visitors, along with their four-legged friends. Andrea Petitto finds subjects at the Orleans Farmers Market where the activity makes people-watching particularly picturesque, and at Kent’s Point with its woodland trails, beaches and community of dog walkers strolling and frolicking at all times of day. As you explore Orleans’ many galleries, you are likely to see favorite places along with locations that are new to you, perhaps inspiring you to paint, to write, to discover some aspects of Orleans to just enjoy.

MEET ME IN ORLEANS a great destination for groups
BY L I S A S I M U N D SO N

rleans is a great place to live and visit. But it’s also an ideal spot for group gatherings, whether conferences, association meetings or private events. “Orleans is more of a hidden gem and has great offerings for recreation, off-site activities and group dining,” notes Jennifer Allard, owner of Mainsail Events, a local destination management company. “We don’t have your conventional meeting rooms, like banquet halls or hotel ballrooms, but that appeals to a lot of groups as well. If you select the Cape or Orleans as your destination, you’re most likely looking for that hidden gem and not a ballroom,” she adds.
Major meeting planners agree. “The Cape, including Orleans, provides a unique backdrop for every meeting with all the nearby beaches and the wide variety of off-site theme opportunities to surprise and delight your attendees,” says Cezanne Macary, manager of global accounts for Danversbased HelmsBriscoe. “The Cape to me is a home away from home, allowing me to relax and fully engage in its beauty.” In any event, Orleans makes gathering on the Cape extra special. Following are just some of the “hidden gems” that will help you nail a memorable occasion in the Elbow of the Cape, Orleans.

DESTINATION, MANAGED
J
ennifer Allard, owner of the destination management company Mainsail Events, answers our questions about the Cape and Orleans as premier spots for meetings, associations and group events of all kinds. mainsailevents.com Are you seeing interest in Orleans and the Cape as a good choice for group travel? The Cape as a whole is a great location for meetings and associations. We’re a short drive from Boston and Rhode Island and there’s a huge tech sector in Metro North and West of Boston, making the Cape an easily accessible location with that special destination feel.
Northwest Schoolhouse Informally known as Odd Fellows Hall, this former 1830s schoolhouse is literally one-of-a-kind in Orleans. “We’re the only schoolhouse from that time that’s still standing,” says Bill Wordell, president of the nonprofit Northwest Schoolhouse, Inc. “We rent mostly to local groups but would certainly welcome groups from off-Cape.” Event space includes a
What types of groups are you booking? I’m booking clubs, associations and smaller meetings for executives. Meetings are definitely coming back, but it’s been a slow start. Some come over the bridge and some fly into Hyannis. Cape Air out of Logan is a great option for those wanting to cut down or avoid the drive from Boston. How would you rate the meeting space and group dining in Orleans? There’s some really creative meeting space in the area, and group dining is wonderful in Orleans. Whether you’re looking for a classic, casual seafood night or fine dining, we have that and everything in between.
1,000-square-foot main hall along with expansive lawn space. “We used to be the big meeting place for the town, and we’d like to see more events come here,” Wordell says. northwestschoolhouse.org

The Cape’s Economy Sails On BY L I S A S I M U N D S O N

o matter how many industries come down the pike, and no matter how many visitors come over the bridge, Cape Cod’s economy will always be blue. Defined as the sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth and jobs while maintaining the ocean’s health, the “Blue Economy” encompasses everything from fisheries and maritime transport to waste management and yes, tourism. Cape Cod ticks every box, and one glance at a map will tell you why: This slim peninsula juts between two major bodies of water – the Atlantic Ocean and Cape Cod Bay – for just 65 miles at its longest and between one and 20 miles at its widest. As long

the cultivation of aquatic animals – including fish, crustaceans and mollusks – is a strong enterprise on the Cape, with aquatic “nurseries” located in numerous places along the coast, including Pleasant Bay Community Boating. pbcb.cc In addition, the Fishermen’s Alliance is an investor in the Aquacultural Research Corporation’s hatchery in Dennis. archatchery.com
as people, or wildlife, for that matter, have lived here they have relied on the surrounding waters and inland waterways for life and livelihood. “We’ve had a Blue Economy before the term even existed,” says lifelong Cape resident Bill Amaru,
a commercial fisherman and chairman of the Orleans Shellfish and Waterways Committee. “Cape Codders have always prized our coastal health.” Maintaining that coastal health has been a priority since President John www.orleanscapecod.org
F. Kennedy established Cape Cod National Seashore in 1961, preserving land that otherwise might have made way for more homes and hotels. With preservation the defining thread, the commercial and residential areas of Cape Cod are woven around conservation lands, state parks, lakes and ponds while keeping a careful distance from the fragile coastline. As Amaru puts it, “if you want to have a Blue Economy, you have to have a green environment.”
Fish Stories
Though no longer the dominant industry it was back in the days of whaling, the Cape’s primary maritime industry – commercial fishing – remains robust. According to a recent port study provided by the Cape Cod

Did You Know? Dayboats may embark on trips anywhere from half a day to 36 hours, depending on the fishery and time of year. Dayboat scallops are the highest quality and are referred to as “dry” as they are not soaked in any solution. Skates have 100 percent utilization – filets come from the wings while the middle, or the “rack” is used for lobster bait. Some species, including conch, surf clams and other shellfish, require culling to keep only those of legal size. PROVIDED BY CAPE COD COMMERCIAL FISHERMEN’S ALLIANCE

works of art reflect the Cape’s fishing culture. “Fishing is the fabric of our history as Cape ‘Cod’ and it is woven into our future,” notes Stephanie Sykes, program and outreach coordinator for the Alliance. “We may have shifted from the primary species of cod to lesser known fish like skate, but fishing remains a primary economic contributor to the local and regional economy. Fishermen are strong and adaptable… they will pivot with the weather, the season and the shifting stocks.” capecodfishermen.org Meanwhile, near-shore shellfish resources support recreational fisheries, directly generating more than $43 million annually from commercial wild harvest and aquaculture production. Indeed, the Cape enjoys a recreational and commercial operations combo platter, as scores of professional boat captains offer fishing and boating charters that ply the sparkling waters surrounding the peninsula and by extension, increaswww.orleanscapecod.org
