ach year as our team puts together the MidCape Guide, I feel so lucky to discover (and rediscover) such fascinating and enjoyable things about the town of Yarmouth. And it is my pleasure to help share these events, attractions, activities, and organizations with all of you.

In this issue, we offer some great suggestions for ways to have fun on Yarmouth’s waterways, indulge in chic thrifting at hip vintage shops, explore the arts and culture scene on the MidCape, and get into the swing of things at one of our town’s golf courses.

We also dig deeper into the engrossing hands-on process that produces the charming carvings on the Sand Sculpture Trail each year, showcase our celebrity moment when Yarmouth was featured as a Boston 25 News Zip Trip, and take a walk on the chilly side with the annual South Yarmouth Library Holiday Cookie Stroll.

Also in these pages, talented professional photographer and Yarmouth resident Betty Wiley gives us a glorious look at scenic dawns and dusks across town, and local restaurateur Alan Delaney of The Skipper shares his personal recipe for delicious Fried Clams (plus, we let you in on how to dig for some quahogs yourself!).

So, no matter what time of year you are visiting us or if you are a year-round or part-time resident, I hope you, too, will unearth something delightful to do, see and enjoy in Yarmouth!

YARMOUTH CLOSE UP!

Boston 25 comes to Yarmouth

LAST SUMMER, the Zip Trip team from the Boston 25 news station spent a festive morning filming at Smugglers Beach to showcase some of the most entertaining things Yarmouth has to offer. They were joined by an enthusiastic crowd of beachgoers, visitors, and residents on what proved to be an idyllic July day.

Highlights from the live newscast included tasty samples of gelato from Caffé Gelato Bertini and lobster rolls from The Skipper Chowder House, interviews with the folks from the Cape Cod Inflatable Park and the Cultural Center of Cape Cod, and a firsthand look at how Fitzysnowman Studios creates the clever and impressive sand sculptures that line our streets all summer as part of the Yarmouth Sand Sculpture Trail.

One of the most enduring messages that the TV crew was able to share with its viewers was what a warm and wonderful community Yarmouth is—both year-round and during our busiest tourist seasons.

We hope you get a chance while you are in town to experience some of what Boston 25 featured last summer—and everything else that Yarmouth has in store this year too!

Three Villages — Three Fun Facts!

Like many towns on the Cape, Yarmouth is made up of separate “villages.” Together, the three villages of Yarmouth—South Yarmouth, West Yarmouth, and Yarmouth Port—feel like a seamless whole while each has its own distinctive atmosphere.

West Yarmouth

Originally built in 1710, Baxter Grist Mill, located on Route 28 at Mill Pond, is the only surviving 18thcentury water-powered mill on Cape Cod. There is parking and a picnic area, and in the spring, visitors can watch alewives and herring make their way through the renovated fish ladder alongside the mill. (Keep an eye out for the pond’s swans as well!)

South Yarmouth

Two miles south of Bass River Beach lies the Yarmouth artificial reef, the first of its kind permitted in Massachusetts. First constructed in 1978, the 127-acre reef—consisting of thousands of separate units of tires filled with concrete— provides an ideal habitat for fish and lobsters.

Yarmouth Port

A favorite spot for watching the sunset, Bass Hole (Gray’s Beach) was the site for Yarmouth’s first town dock. It clearly was an important harbor: At the start of the American Revolution, a British map (circa 1776) identified only two harbors on all of Cape Cod: Provincetown and Yarmouth Port’s Bass Hole.

Step By Step in Sand

Here is how Sean and Tracey Fitzpatrick of Fitzysnowman goes from sketch to sculpture each spring and summer as he brings the grainy and glorious creations of the Yarmouth Sand Sculpture Trail to life.

Fitzpatrick strives to get the cleanest, most weed-free sand from his quarry suppliers.

Sean Fitzpatrick of Fitzysnowman works with each business or organization to come up with a design based on its preferred theme. “The sculptures are all custom designed with their input, so they know what they will look like before they are carved,” says Fitzpatrick.

Fitzpatrick and his wife Tracey design and carve all the sculptures. Once the 3-dimensional sand structure is perfected, Fitzpatrick sprays the sculpture with a mixture of Elmer’s glue and water to set the sand.

Sand is deposited at the site and then shoveled and compacted into standard, predesigned 2-foot-high forms. “They are much like a springform pan with no top or bottom,” he says, “and resemble forms used when building a foundation.”

Often, interested onlookers gather around Fitzpatrick and his wife, watching with fascination as the sculptures come to life.

Smiling ice cream cones, dancing mermaids, cheerful clams, smirking fish, grand pirate ships, and magical castles all appear on Yarmouth’s streets each June, ready for thousands of visitors to enjoy.

On the Water Activities

From Cape Cod Bay to Nantucket Sound and on numerous rivers and ponds, Yarmouth visitors can enjoy water-focused recreation in every direction.

Whether you want an off-shore adventure or a leisurely paddle, a day of fishing, or a season of sailing, Yarmouth is well positioned to provide everything you need for on-the-water fun.

Boating

If you have your own boat and want to take advantage of Yarmouth’s several shores, there are eight marine-based boat ramps throughout town. Boats are free to launch, and parking is available at no charge (except for Bass River Beach, which has a seasonal parking fee payable to a gate attendant). The Town also has two improved freshwater boat ramps, on Long Pond and Dennis Pond. (Reminder: No gas-powered engines are allowed on any of the freshwater ponds in Yarmouth.)

If you plan to enjoy your vessel for a longer period of time and want to find a mooring, the Town maintains four municipal marinas, Bass Hole in Yarmouth Port, Packet Landing in South Yarmouth, and two West Yarmouth locations: Englewood Beach and Colonial Acres. Townowned marina facility slips are rented through the Division of Natural Resources; slip availability, prices, and vessel length limits vary at each location.

There is additional pedestrian-only access to the town’s waterways. These sites are perfect for watercraft such as kayaks, canoes, stand-up paddle boards, and other lightweight boats that can be easily carried.

Maintaining or purchasing a new vessel is convenient in Yarmouth. Ship Shops, a full-service marina, which has been serving local boating needs since 1928, is located right on Bass River off Pleasant Street. Founded as the boathouse of Charles Henry Davis, a renowned businessman, yachtsman, and civil engineer, Ships Shops has become one of the most longstanding boatyards on the Cape. It offers engine and systems repairs,

hauling and launching, and fiberglass and painting services. Ship Shops is an authorized dealer for several brands of boats, and its parts department is fully stocked. The marina also offers rentals of 16- to 24-foot boats, ready for your exploration of Bass River and Nantucket Sound.

McShane Yacht Sales, at 1253 Route 28, is the Cape location of the respected boat dealership founded over a decade ago in Marshfield by David and Rosa McShane, two avid boaters. McShane carries some of the finest brands of new powerboats and serves as a broker for all makes of previously owned vessels. With its staff’s knowledge and friendly service, extended warranties, and years of experience, McShane Yacht Sales is ready to provide the perfect boat for your yachting dreams.

ON THE WATER

Fishing

If fishing is your thing, you need to look no further than Riverview Bait & Tackle, 1273 Rte. 28, South Yarmouth. Serving both commercial and recreational fishermen since 1972, Riverview stocks everything you need to fish the Cape. Owner Lee Boisvert says that fishing is more popular than ever. “It was something people were still able to do during the pandemic,” he says. “We saw an influx of men and women fishing in all seasons.” Boisvert explains that by late April, the area starts to see striped bass return, and then in May, bluefish is a popular species to target. “By summer, we have abundant black sea bass and scup, fluke, and bluefin tuna.”

He points out that late summer and early fall are excellent times to try angling locally. “When the waters are warmer, there is more activity, and other fisheries come into play.” In the winter months, Boisvert is big on clams and oysters. “I’m a fan of harvesting shellfish in colder water, and winter shellfishing is extremely popular.” Riverview also offers advice and suggestions for freshwater fishing, as many local ponds and lakes are stocked with pickerel, trout, and bass from spring through fall. “You can find someplace to fish on the Cape every day of the year,” says Boisvert. “I like to say we have 365 fishable days!”

Saltwater fish you can catch in the waters around Cape Cod include Striped Bass, Black Sea Bass, Bluefish, Flounder, Mackerel, Scup, Tautog, Bonito, and Bluefin and Yellowfin Tunas. Yarmouth’s 28 freshwater ponds provided anglers with ample opportunity to reel in Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass, Trout, Pickerel, Yellow Perch, and Bluegills.

ON THE WATER

Charters and Tours

Let a professional take you out to sea on an amazing adventure through one of the many local charter fishing and marine life observation companies. Shark Shark Tuna Fishing Charters, a father-and-son outfit, offers half and full-day fishing and Great White Shark adventures, sunset cruises, and sightseeing trips from their home dock at Skippy’s Pier 1 Marina on Neptune Lane.

Bass River Fishing Charters is a family-run charter company, perfect for every level of fishing skill. Headquartered on Pleasant Street, Bass River Charters fishes for striped bass, blues, sea bass, porgies, fluke, tuna, shark, or cod. Several other charter fishing boats, such as EmmaJack Charters, leave from the nearby Packet Landing marina and municipal park, adjacent to the Bass River bridge. Operating a Cape-made fiberglass boat, Pythias Sportfishing offers half-day and full-day charters specializing in both inshore and offshore fishing and sunset, pelagic bird, and whale watching tours. Launching from several different locations, including Bass River (Smugglers) Beach, the knowledgeable crews take you where the fish are. Sure Shot Charters has two trailered, open-deck vessels ready to host you on light tackle and big-game fishing excursions, including haddock charters starting in early spring.

Nantucket Sound is perfect for active water sports, Bass River is an ideal kayaking spot, and the calmer ponds in town offer a great chance for canoeing and stand-up paddling.

Shellfishing

Recreational shellfish licenses for quahogs, soft-shell clams (steamers), and sea clams, along with oysters and bay scallops, can be purchased yearly and are valid from April to March. The hard-shell clams known as quahogs can be found throughout the town’s saltwater bays and estuaries. In addition to obtaining a permit, you will also need to follow all the local shellfishing rules and regulations, which you can get from Yarmouth’s Natural Resources Department website.

Shallow or deep, bayside or sound, fresh or salty, the waterways of Yarmouth have limitless opportunities for outdoor recreation and natural adventure. So, come on in, the water’s fine!

Yacht Club

Residents and longer-term visitors might consider membership in the Bass River Yacht Club. Founded to promote sailing on Bass River and Nantucket Sound, the historic club offers an accredited youth sailing program, adult sailing, racing, and social and recreational activities for boaters of every ability. Finally, if you’d rather just wade in the water and unearth a delicious seafood meal, contact the Town Hall for a shellfish license.

Skipper Chowder House Steamers

“When people think of Cape Cod summers, we hope steamers and fried clams at the Skipper Chowder House are one of the first things that come to mind,” says owner Alan Delaney. Steamers are soft-shell clams that are small in size and tender and juicy. Their subtle sweetness pairs perfectly with butter and lemon.

Ingredients:

• Fresh local soft shell clams (1.5 pounds)

• One stick of butter (8 tablespoons)

• Pinch of salt

• 1–2 lemons

• Water (or beer or stout, if you prefer)

Prep Your Steamers:

Soak clams in a saltwater mixture to purge out any sand. For every quart of water you add to the clams, add one tablespoon of sea salt and let your steamers soak overnight.

How to Cook Your Steamers:

1. In a large pot or steamer, bring about an inch of water (or beer) to a boil. Add a pinch of salt to the water.

2. Add the clams and cover them with a lid. Steam for about 5–10 minutes or until clams open.

3. Melt butter in a small saucepan over low heat.

4. Remove the clams from the pot and discard any that did not open. Save the water (broth) for additional cleaning of your steamers.

5. Transfer steamed clams to a large serving bowl.

6. Squeeze fresh lemon over the clams.

How to Eat Your Steamers:

1. Remove the clam from its shell, and remove the outer casing of the neck. Discard the membrane, also known as the siphon.

2. Grip the neck with your fingers, and clean off any remaining sand by swirling the clam around in the hot broth.

3. Dip in warm butter.

4. Eat, enjoy, repeat!

Visual and Performing Arts

The CULTURAL CENTER OF CAPE COD is the MidCape region’s premier year-round art and entertainment venue.  The beautifully renovated bank building has been presenting outstanding art exhibitions, concerts, receptions, lectures, classes, and special events since it opened in 2007. The main building houses several galleries with rotating exhibitions and a gift shop featuring work by local artists. The education wing has spaces for painting pottery, culinary arts, dance, and yoga classes, as well as a full recording studio and Artists in Residence studios. Spend Art-FULL days in downtown Hyannis by browsing among the colorful seaside shanties in two locations near the harbor. Follow the Walkway-to-the-Sea from Main Street to the HYANNIS HYARTS ARTIST SHANTIES near Hyannis Harbor and meet local Cape Cod artists who work and sell their wares right from their “seaside studios.” Both locations are beautiful and breezy spots to visit and shop while taking in the sights and sounds of the working waterfront. The shanties are always open weekdays from 11:00 am, May through September, on weekends in October, and for fun and festive special events in November and December. Each October, the crowd-pleasing YARMOUTH SEASIDE FESTIVAL hosts a craft fair with more than 125 crafters from all over the country at the Joshua Sears Memorial Field, 1175 Route 28, South Yarmouth, with other events taking place across town. This threeday fest presents an entertaining roster of children’s activities, races, live music, nature shows, and a beach bonfire, culminating in a spectacular fireworks display at Seagull Beach. Historic Homes

The charming Yarmouth Port Common on Strawberry Lane and Route 6A is sandwiched between two intriguing homes from different eras.

On the west side of the green is the CAPTAIN BANGS HALLET HOUSE MUSEUM, the Cape’s only fully furnished sea captain’s house. Inside the circa 1840 home, porcelain and silk treasures from the captain’s many trips to China are displayed. The flavor of his and his wife’s daily life is all around you, from the dining table set for dinner to the children’s room filled with toys.

Across the common is the fascinating EDWARD GOREY HOUSE, home to the famous author and illustrator of gothic humor from 1979 until his death in 2000. Each room is filled with evidence of his talents and eccentricities. From April through December 2023, you can delight in “Dressed to Kill,” an exhibit showcasing Gorey’s decided influence on fashion through his personal taste and the costumes of his characters.

Vintage means character, charm, history, utility, artistry, and quality, all wrapped up in one neat, affordable package. It means a chance to reuse, repurpose, and revitalize items that are both well made and well loved. And it means supporting small businesses and nonprofits that strengthen the community and help me strive for “zero waste.”

So, where do I go to find the perfect items for my wardrobe, workshop, or home? Yarmouth.

Nearly all of the town’s vintage shops are known for carefully curated collectibles, housewares, furnishings, clothing, accessories, and other treasures, some of them truly antique, all of them worth another chance to be useful. A few shops also carry new items—such as candles, soaps, jewelry, and other work by local artists and artisans—but I look primarily for the old and unusual. The unique. The “find.” That’s how I’ve found nearly all the furniture in my house, but it’s also how I’ve feathered my nest. Take, for instance, the jumble of old wooden letters that just happened to spell “QUIET,” which I turned into a sign for the door to my writing room (not that it did any good). Or a beat-up, improbably pink wooden tool caddie which, turned on its side, made an excellent spice rack. My nest is full of such things.

I also shop vintage for the opportunity to be creative, incorporating architectural remnants and “survivors” from bygone eras into the assemblages I make in my workshop. I’ve made birdhouses out of flour sifters, clock cases, bottle crates, letter boxes, coffee tins, and teapots. I’ve fashioned a flight of ersatz angels out of banged-up buoys, verdigris-coated boat fittings, egg cups, sap buckets, tin molds, and textile spools. And I’ve concocted a wealth of wreaths, including one made of piano keys and another from old paint brushes steeped in color.

It’s extraordinary how satisfying it is to make something unusual and interesting from the cornucopia of odds and ends available in the town’s second-chance shops.

The appeal of most of those shops lies in the variety, the everchanging inventory, and the artistry with which items are displayed. “Our consigners are constantly bringing in fresh items,” says Maureen Beriau, who has run Couches to Candlesticks for nineteen years. “Just what you’d want for a comfortable cottage.” Likewise, Picket Fences and Simply Vintage of Cape Cod are packed with a wide array of beautiful finds arranged in little islands of nostalgia and color, all of them inviting and inspiring. “I love to put vignettes together, stage all the beautiful things people bring in,” says Kathleen Kovar, who has run Picket Fences for ten years. Cathy Brosnihan of Simply Vintage is equally enthusiastic about the delightful surprises that have come through her door for a dozen years, “perfect for all kinds of customers.”

With a greater emphasis on clothing and accessories, Wilma’s Eclectic Consignment, run by Wilma (of course), is peopled with mannequins that help to put the “fun” in funky, all of them dressed to the nines and bedecked with baubles. Exploring Wilma’s is a lot like visiting a kaleidoscope: There’s something to catch the eye at every step, in every direction.

Wicked Thrift, which has a pronounced specialty—retro clothing—still boasts such a diverse inventory that it has an equally broad appeal. “After twelve years, we’re still going strong,” says

Missy Jones, the young woman who welcomes me into the shop. “We have a bit of everything. The cool thing about Wicked Thrift is that three generations of people can come in, and they’re all going to find something.”

What else do these shops have in common? They are all run by warm and welcoming women who take great pride in what they’ve achieved, as well they should.

But let’s not forget the town’s thrift shops, which are attractive and inviting, run by churches and other nonprofits, and filled with both bargains and opportunities to support the community.

The ReStore, for instance, is an incredible source of furniture and fixtures, all of them donated to support Habitat for Humanity’s mission to partner with families in need of affordable homes. Likewise, the sale of donated furniture, clothing, and other goods at Cape Abilities Thrift helps fund the mission to support people with disabilities across Cape Cod. Each nonprofit thrift shop in Yarmouth offers merchandise whose quality is as high as its purpose.

If you or someone you know is a flower fanatic or avid gardener, then the Flower Angels Thrift Store on Route 28 is an ideal stop on your thrifting adventure! Specializing in flower-themed collectibles, kitchenware, art, small furniture, and costume jewelry, as well as gently used garden items, the Flower Angels Thrift Store supports the mission of the nonprofit Flower Angels, a self-funded program of Community Connections.

All year long, Flower Angels volunteers repurpose donated fresh flowers into charming floral arrangements for delivery to residents of Cape Cod nursing homes. The cheerful bouquets and personal delivery brighten the days of valuable members of our local community.

It’s an adventure, really, to explore the town with vintage in mind, especially when the crowds have abated and the pace has slowed, though there are treasures waiting all year round. Simply check for hours on social media, plot your course, and set sail, open to possibility. Chances are you’ll go home with something you didn’t know you were looking for until you found it.

Do you love the idea of watching boats go by from a quiet beach with not much foot traffic? Bay View Beach may be the place for you! This charming stretch of sand offers relatively calm waters and the opportunity to watch the boats on their way in and out of Hyannis Marina. A popular spot for families with young children, Colonial Acres Beach is medium in size and has calm waters. Cross the wooden bridge onto the beach full of small rocky treasures. Enjoy a view of the bay, featuring a rocky jetty and boats coming and going from Hyannis Harbor. There are no lifeguards on duty, but you’ll find limited parking and a seasonal portable toilet.

Tucked into a small cove just north of Great Island, Englewood Beach is a peaceful spot that is often enjoyed by shell collectors. This small beach is accessible to the handicapped and offers a boat ramp for those looking to spend the day offshore. Small parking area.

The Flax Pond Recreation Area is a facility that lies on 100-plus acres of conservation land, with a beautiful pond and an extensive cedar swamp. Open to the public from September to June, it serves as a summer camp in July and August. This recreation area sports room for volleyball and basketball, is popular for picnics, and offers restrooms. Walk the short trails through the pines along the pond’s edge. Locked from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m.

HOLE (Cape Cod Bay)

Off Center Street, Yarmouth Port

An 800-foot boardwalk takes you over the creek, a salt marsh, and tidal inlets to the beach. Bass Hole (aka Gray’s Beach) is a great spot to explore wildlife and has a picnic area and restrooms. Low tide draws out much of the water, leaving behind calm tide pools for the youngest of beachgoers to splash around in. Between sunbathing and watching the osprey nest, you can explore the beautiful walking trails behind the playground.

LONG POND

Indian Memorial Drive, South Yarmouth

A swimming and kayaking haven tucked away in the heart of South Yarmouth. Long Pond offers a small beach, small playground, wooded area, basketball court, and seasonal portable toilet. Long Pond is locked from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m.

PARKERS RIVER BEACH

(Nantucket Sound)

Off South Shore Drive, South Yarmouth

Parkers River Beach (aka Beachwood) is a long, narrow beach situated in South Yarmouth. People come for the great views, rock jetties and ample parking. The beach does get a bit crowded, but there are a playground and gazebo nearby, as well as a bathhouse, shower, and concession stand. Parkers River Beach is gated and locked from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m.

This recreation area with many amenities is off Buck Island Road opposite the Yarmouth Dog Park. There’s something for everyone: a softball field, soccer/utility field, tennis courts, basketball court, playground, life course, and picnic area. Sea Gull Road, West Yarmouth

Looking for a popular spot right on Nantucket Sound? Seagull Beach is Yarmouth’s largest. It may have no more seagulls than any other beach but offers a large stretch of sand that hosts many activities such as windsurfing, swimming, and beach games. The beach offers clean sand, calm water, a large parking lot and plenty of room despite its popularity. There’s a bathhouse, shower, and concession stand. The beach is locked from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m.

VIEW (Nantucket Sound)

Opposite South Shore Drive, South Yarmouth

Overlooking Nantucket Sound, Sea View Beach offers pictureworthy views and very clean sand. This mid-sized beach does not tend to get overly crowded and offers parking right next to the beach. There are no lifeguards, but you’ll find a picnic area, a concrete walk on the seawall, and a seasonal portable toilet. The beach is locked from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m.

WILBUR PARK

Highbank Road, South Yarmouth

Located on Highbank Road at the turn in Bass River, the Wilbur Park Beach is mostly known as a boat launch. There is a picnic area, but the very small section of sand is accessible only during low tide. No lifeguards on duty, no facilities. Wilbur Park is locked from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m.

WINDMILL BEACH (Nantucket Sound)

River Street, South Yarmouth

Windmill Beach gets its name from the historic windmill nearby. If you want to learn how a windmill works, the Judah Baker Windmill offers tours. This is a smaller beach that is close to nonexistent during high tide. The sand is muddy but rich in seashells. Windmill Beach is locked from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m.

Beach Stickers

During the summer season (May–September), Yarmouth beaches are staffed by lifeguards and gate attendants from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Visitors can purchase daily or weekly parking passes for each town beach at the entrance gate, with the exception of one resident-only beach, South Middle Beach on South Shore Drive, which requires a resident Beach Sticker.

Bringing your Dog on Vacation?

The MidCape is a dog-friendly place, but towns do regulate their presence, with dogs banned from beaches mid-May to mid-September. Yarmouth offers dog parks where your pet can socialize. In general, keep your dog leashed at all times (unless visiting the dog parks) and check the town website for specific rules and regulations.

Dogs are prohibited at parks with playing fields (Peter Homer Park, Sandy Pond Recreation Area, Flax Pond Recreation Area, Little League Complex and John Simpkins fields) and on Seagull Beach and Gray’s Beach from April 1; and on all other beaches and ways beginning May 15 through Labor Day. THE THREE LIBRARIES IN YARMOUTH are open year-round and offer both residents and visitors a world of knowledge and fun. Each was established in the 1800s as a small reading association. The trio—South Yarmouth, West Yarmouth, and Yarmouth Port—became municipally run entities in the 1990s, overseen by the Town Library Board. Since 2008, the Yarmouth Port library has reverted to Association ownership, but it is still a public library, open to all.

In addition to providing readers with a plethora of new fiction and nonfiction, classic literature, and hundreds of reference titles to peruse, the libraries also offer informational resources, lectures, classes, children’s activities, books for sale, and much more.

Whether it is movement and music for toddlers, story time for young children, teen crafts, book discussions, knitting lessons, author lectures, or a chance to sit down with Town leadership for Q & A, the libraries have a full calendar of interesting and educational events every month.

To help support its work and services, each library has long-standing and dedicated volunteer groups that raise money and create community assistance for the library’s mission.

LIBRARIES

For the South Yarmouth branch, which is located on Old Main Street near Bass River, the South Yarmouth Library Association has been hosting a merry fundraiser each December for more than 17 years. The proceeds of the popular Holiday Cookie Stroll fund services at South Library that the town can’t pick up, says Lesley Callahan, corresponding secretary, archivist, and Cookie Stroll chair. “We shoulder the burden and help pay for children’s programs, author talks, museum passes, and some materials and equipment the library needs.”

Each year the energetic cookie stroll volunteers begin their planning months in advance, securing hosts—people and organizations in the Bass River area who will open their decorated homes to strollers—as well as cookie “captains,” bakers, and cookie bag sewers. “We take a big breath after the stroll and then begin again in January.”

With up to ten stops, the route winds its way through historic lanes and charming neighborhoods, with a different cookie available at each stop. “The Cookie Captain determines the cookies,” says Callahan, “sometimes tapping into recipes that are family favorites or traditions of the hosts and hostesses.” The captains find enough bakers to make a total of 725 cookies for each home, and although the stroll sells out each year with 700 tickets (at $25 each), whenever there are leftover cookies, they are donated to a local food pantry.

The recipes are collected in a booklet that, along with a festive holiday fabric bag, is given to strollers as they make their way from house to house. Trolley service is also offered throughout the day.

Callahan says that in addition to the Cookie Stroll, the SYLA runs the busy bookstore at the branch. “The carefully curated selection of gently used and affordable books is a wonderful outreach to our community,” says Callahan. “Our little library is amazing and so much a part of this neighborhood.”

RECIPE FROM THE HOLIDAY COOKIE STROLL

Peanut Butter M&M’s Cookies

Ingredients:

• ¾ cup creamy peanut butter

• ½ cup shortening

• 1¼ cups brown sugar, packed

• 3 tbsp milk

• 1 tbsp vanilla

Directions:

• 1¾ cups flour

• ¾ tsp salt

• ¾ tsp baking soda

• 1 egg

• 1½ cups mini M&M’s

Preheat oven to 375º. Combine peanut butter, shortening, brown sugar, milk, and vanilla in a bowl. Beat at medium speed until blended. Add egg. Combine flour, salt, and baking soda. Add to peanut butter mixture and beat on low speed. Mix until blended. Stir in 1 cup of the mini M&M’s. Drop by teaspoonfuls 2 inches apart on an ungreased or parchment-lined cookie sheet. Decorate tops with additional M&M’s. Bake 6–7 minutes. Makes three dozen cookies.

What could be better than a day on a Cape Cod golf course?

Making golf a highlight of your visit to Yarmouth is a terrific way to enjoy the town’s coastal and forested scenery while being healthy, active, and social.

The four picturesque courses located in Yarmouth give everyone an opportunity to practice their game and have some fun, whether you are a novice just learning your swing or an experienced golfer seeking a links-based challenge.

Golfing is possible throughout all our spectacular seasons here: spring, summer, fall, and even on mild winter days, and each of Yarmouth’s courses offers public play.

The oldest course, originally built as a private nine-hole course in 1900, South Yarmouth’s Bass River Golf Course was redesigned and expanded in 1914 by legendary Scottish-born golf course designer Donald Ross. This beautifully landscaped 18-hole public course features more than 6,000 yards of open green. The back nine has spectacular views of Bass River, with the 18th hole taking you over a marsh running alongside the water.

Also in South Yarmouth is Blue Rock Golf Course, a 3,000-yard course with holes ranging from 103 to 255 yards. The course is adjacent to Blue Rock Resort, making it a great option to “stay and play.” Open to the public as well as members, and with two putting and chipping greens, Blue Rock is ideal for all ages and abilities. Hole # 9, the course’s signature hole, is a 169-yard par 3, which plays across marshland to an elevated green, and has been named one of Cape Cod’s 18 Best. “We have a very family-friendly environment here at Blue Rock,” says Tim Sullivan, the Pro Shop manager, who says that the course is kept in magnificent shape and is considered one the best-manicured courses on the Cape. Sullivan notes that the course offers a wide selection of clinics as part of the Blue Rock Golf Academy, suitable for all levels of players. “We love to attract new golfers, junior golfers, and returning golfers—as the saying goes, you are never too old or too young to start golfing!”

West Yarmouth is home to Bayberry Hills Golf Course, a premier championship public course with a main 18-hole layout—The Winds and The Sands— that includes wide fairways and big greens amidst copses of trees, along with formidable bunkers, manicured sand traps, and undulations that provide a unique challenge. The Links course is a traditional nine-hole course of rolling hills with open, expansive views and a “wow” finishing hole over a pond. Bayberry Hills also offers one of the best public course practice areas in Massachusetts, with a large driving range, generous putting green, and separate chipping green.

The fourth course in Yarmouth, Kings Way Golf Club, is part of the Kings Way Condominium community on Route 6A in Yarmouthport. Designed by world-famous golf architect Brian Silva, the course covers 4,000 yards of terrain and plays to a par of 60, featuring spectacular elevation changes, Scottish bunkers, and rolling greens. Although the Club is semi-private, it currently offers limited public play and is friendly to all skill levels.

Each of Yarmouth’s golf courses offers a pro shop, restaurant, and opportunities for lessons from PGA-certified golf instructors. You can also gear up at Fit to a Tee Golf, located on Route 28 in South Yarmouth, before you head to the greens and even opt for a family-friendly adventure at one of Yarmouth’s several miniature golf centers. Plus, Fit to a Tee and West Yarmouth’s Scally’s Irish Ale House each have an interactive golf simulator experience for both indoor practice and social fun. No matter what you choose, golf in Yarmouth is a winner!

Located in South Yarmouth, in the area that was once known as Quaker Village, the Yarmouth Friends Meetinghouse, a beautifully simple white structure, was erected in 1809 and is still used as a house of worship for Cape Cod Quakers.
