ALIPH Program for the Safeguarding of Syrian Heritage Information Document 1. Background In July 2025, ALIPH adopted a Program for the Safeguarding of Syrian Heritage. With a target budget of USD 5 million over two years—including an initial USD 2 million commitment for the first year—this Program seeks to address urgent preservation needs and will be implemented in close coordination with the Directorate-General of Antiquities and Museums of Syria (DGAM). 2. Eligible Activities a. Rehabilitation of museums and their collections - Rehabilitation of the National Museum in Damascus, regional museums, and site museums; - Safeguarding and restoration of the collections of Syrian museums. b. Rehabilitation of sites, monuments, and historic and religious buildings - Rehabilitation of monuments, in their cultural, religious, and historical diversity, with the goal of restoring their original function or repurposing them for social and economic uses; - Rehabilitation of urban fabric, including religious buildings, historical houses, souks, and public spaces; - Protection and valorization of archaeological sites, with a focus on preventing illicit trafficking of cultural property. c. -
Training of professionals in heritage, craftsmanship, and intangible heritage Built heritage professionals (architects, engineers, etc.); Museums professionals, conservators and archaeological sites professionals; Skilled workers in the restoration and conservation of built heritage (cabinetmakers, carpenters, blacksmiths, etc.); Artisans of traditional Syrian crafts.
Priority will be given to field-based training projects that foster workforce integration and strengthen local, regional, and international economic networks.
