Family Celebrations The weekend before Easter we had a family lunch to celebrate Ali’s 50th birthday. We held our annual Easter egg hunt on the same day, since family members were going in different directions for Easter this year. The kids made up an Easter Bunny ‘nest’ before lunch - a bunch of leaves and flowers to cover the bottom of a laundry basket. Then they drew chalk directions to the basket on the verandah concrete, for Easter bunny to follow. After lunch they headed out for a walk in the mallee bush around our house, looking for signs that Easter bunny was nearby. And by the time they came home ... guess what? Easter Bunny had been, dropping his eggs through the garden as he went. Delightful squeals followed as the kids raced ahead of each other to collect as many eggs as possible in their little Easter baskets, and later pooled to make sure they each got an equal quantity.
If you’ve never done this yourself before, we highly recommend that you put it on your holiday list. The river is just so beautiful and so serene. It is unbelievably relaxing. A great way to wind down.

Brenton’s 30th Birthday If you’ve phoned Grant Sheds in the past 10 years, it’s likely that you may have spoken with Brenton Halupka from time to time. He may have helped you work to out the best shed size and layout for your specific needs. Brenton is also our son and turned 30 on Anzac Day. Happy Birthday Brenton.
We had 3 of our friends children with us who were aged around 10-14. They delighted in the chance to try water skiing and ‘tubing’, but it was knee boarding that won them all, mainly because each of them mastered it. So Danny and their parents were in our ski boat for hours, entertaining them. And such things are so easy to do when you can see the immense joy in the kids. Here’s the houseboat company we used. We’re happy to give them a ‘plug’ because they made our Easter houseboat weekend fabulous!

LOCAL AUSSIE LEGENDS Grant’s Knee Operation
Some Men Don’t Know How Lucky They Are ...
Ali’s dad, Grant Telfer, had a knee replacement operation in March.
We visited Gordon Todd at Tintinara in April. He was keen to extend the Grant Sheds Machinery Shed that he’d bought back in 2002.
For new people reading our magazine, Grant is Ali’s dad, and started Grant Sheds way back in 1952. He was also the maker of the famous old Monash Playground which many people around the state, and in fact around the whole country, still remember. It attracted around 300,000 annually to visit it. At age 81, Grant is still a very fit bloke and rides his bush-bike from Monash to Barmera most days (before the op that is) to deliver the Grant Sheds outgoing mail. This is a round trip of about 16kms, and while he does now have a small power-assist motor on his bike, he only uses it as much as he needs to (eg. Up hills and in head winds). But about 25 years ago, he was riding his bike in Perth when he was knocked off his bike by a hit-run driver. He woke up in hospital and had a smashed up knee that had to be screwed and plated back together. So this poor knee has done him well and it’s probably surprising that it didn’t need replacing sooner.
Gordon enjoys reading our FARM GATE NEWS magazine and wanted to know how Danny had scored a ride on his Harley motorbike in the Driver’s Parade at the Clipsal V8 Supercars race each March. Gordon Todd of Tintinara with his Harley motorcycle that he keeps in his lounge!
The answer is that it’s by invitation only. A friend of Danny has been doing it for years and he scored a ride for Danny, who has now done it for 4 years. Gordon then explained that he owned a Harley motorbike and laughed when he said that he keeps it INSIDE THE HOUSE! Boy, we need to sell this bloke a special garage for it, hey? And ‘No’ he’s not a single bloke ... He has a wife he should treasure!

To give him credit though, I don’t think it’s their main lounge, it has a tiled floor and of course ... Harley’s don’t leak oil, do they? Danny is going to see if he can score a place in next year’s Drivers Parade for Gordon. And yes, he has ordered his shed extension ... does that add pressure to Danny to get the ride for him?

Barefoot Farmer From Wudinna Kingsley Scholz, the ‘Barefoot Farmer’ called in to our Monash factory this month to collect his new 12m x 30m x 5.1m Grant Sheds “Aussie Tough” Machinery Shed. Kingsley is from Wudinna on he Eyre Peninsula. He’ll be building it himself and will find it pretty easy. Grant Sheds are designed to be easy to build. He’ll be back after seeding to collect 3 more sheds for his brother Stuart.

Mid North Farmer Changing To
IMPROVE PRODUCTIVITY TAFE runs learner and improver shearing schools all around the state to try and bring kids into the industry and teach them the right shearing techniques right from the start. This means they can shear better and quicker. Tim shears his sheep in February and when he moved to this time (from the traditional AugustSeptember), not too many others were doing February shearing. Now almost everyone is shearing in February. Why the change? Tim says, “I changed my time of lambing and that’s why I changed my time of shearing.”
Tim Prior of Hamilton, SA tells his farm story about his cropping and sheep enterprise. He explains how he has changed his farming practices for greater efficiency and productivity. Tim and Dearne Prior run their 1200 acre farm at Hamilton, SA, which is between Marrabel and Kapunda, in the mid North of South Australia. On the farm they grow wheat, averaging about 800 tonnes, and around 300 tonnes of canola each year plus they run sheep.
Grain Farming
Tim takes all his grain straight into the Viterra grain handling system, where it is usually warehoused and he then sells it after harvest. “I wait until we’ve finished each variety and see how much we’ve got for sale, and then see how the prices are going, and decide whether to sell it then or hang onto it,” Tim says. “It depends a bit on our cash flow and whether we need the money.” One of the Prior’s harvest difficulties is delivering to the silos. “It’s a bit awkward,” Tim comments. “We have to go around to different silos these days to deliver our grain. Once upon a time you could just go to the Kapunda silo and deliver everything ... but those days have changed with all the different segregations these days; there’s so many.” “Also, being a late harvest district, the local silos
farmers outside our district, before we start,” he laments. Tim says that he harvests on his own. His header holds about 5-6 tonnes of grain and when that’s full he drives over to field bins and dumps the grain in those. “I don’t actually use a chaser bin myself, because then you need someone sitting in a tractor waiting to come and unload the header. With me not being a real big farmer, I don’t think it warrants me doing that.” Once the field bins are filled, Tim uses contract carriers to come in and he unloads the grain from the field bins into the contractor’s semis. Tim says, “The main difference with having a chaser bin is that you can still keep harvesting while you’re unloading into those chaser bins.” Tim commented that massive productivity gains have been made in cropping methods due to the amazing engineering these days. “You can go back 40 years and you were probably getting $180 a tonne for wheat and at the start of 2012 we were still looking at $200 a tonne for it. But we’ve survived because of the productivity. One person can do so much more now.”
The Killer That Holds The Wool Industry Back
“The productivity gains in wool have been so much less because they haven’t been able to master shearing mechanically,” continues Tim. “That’s been the killer that has held the wool industry back.” Danny Halupka, Grant Sheds owner, in Tim Prior’s crop ... And ‘No ‘ ... He’s not are oftencanola filled up with grain delivered from kneeling down. The canola crop really is this tall.
The Prior’s have about 50:50 Merinos and firstcross lambs. They mate about 700 ewes. Tim does his own crutching but gets shearers in to do his shearing.

“I now have lambs on the ground in AugustSeptember when we’ve got the best pasturefeed and they can grow well, where as before, we were lambing in April with less feed about and then we were feeding them supplementary hay and oats but it wasn’t enough energy for the ewes to produce milk as well.”
Dramatic Increase In Lambing Percentage
Tim explains that while they do get some losses from the cold when lambing in AugustSeptember, their lambing percentage has actually increased dramatically, from 80% to 105%. This is because they have healthy ewes with enough nutrition from undisturbed paddock grazing. When they were lambing in April, there was often a lack of feed in the paddocks and the mother couldn’t always feed her lambs. Therefore supplementary feeding was needed and the ewes just bolt for the feed being distributed by the farmer. This means lambs often got left behind or lost from their mothers. When the ewe finishes feeding, she is content if she has one lamb by her side, but if the twin or triplet got lost, she wouldn’t even notice that. Fly management is also easier now. In the past it was always an issue to get the sheep shorn just before September-October when the flies arrive. These days you can put preventative treatment on them to protect them from fly-strike. “February is just a good month for shearing, where we aren’t doing much else and you don’t have to worry about wet sheep. In August there was always a big issue to keep the sheep dry until the shearers came,” Tim says. Tim uses dogs to help with rounding up sheep. He says, “Sheep react differently if you’ve got a dog or not. Even if you’ve got a useless dog,” he laughs, “ If it’s with you the sheep know it and they tend to mob up naturally, where as if you’re by yourself, they tend to ignore you and just fan out.”

Life in a small country town
The Prior family plays tennis in summer and footy in winter which is common in many grain and sheep farming communities. Tim & Dearne have 3 boys, aged 14, 12 and 9. Tim and Dianne play tennis for Hamilton while the boys play tennis for Marrabel. This is only because they don’t have enough juniors at Hamilton to field any junior teams. Tim agrees that it’s getting harder for small communities to maintain their facilities. “We’re struggling with our tennis courts but we don’t have the money to fix them up,” he says. “Back in the early 80’s we had 3 senior teams and a junior team and had 4 courts. We did a lot of hay carting and stuff that neighbours did to fundraise. That’s how we did it back then. But now we’re down to four families and it’s just hard to raise enough money to keep it all going.”

Alison Halupka, co-owner of Grant Sheds has her say on the sad state of service these days and how Grant Sheds is determined to be different! How often do you experience not just poor service but abominable service when you try to deal with businesses in your local area or beyond? I’d say that poor service is now more common than good service. And great service is practically unheard of.
Have we all become so powerless to be appreciated as a paying client? Just yesterday I phoned a person we’d been doing regular business with for the past 15 years and politely explained that they hadn’t provided our regular fortnightly service for over a month, yet we’d still been paying for it. I copped a mouth full of abuse for my trouble. Unbelievable! Another example...We’ve been trying to source some new products and we’ve contacted relevant businesses by phone, email and face to face meetings, but practically none of them have We receive a lot of comments from our customers about the help Brenton (& others on our team) gives them. Big Depreciation Deductions Make Now A
GREAT TIME TO INVEST In A New Farm Shed*
Huge Increases In Depreciation Deductions For Small Business Entities Mean The Government Could Be Helping You Pay For Your New Shed! New legislation has increased A. The small business instant asset
write-off threshold,
B. Combined the small business general
and long-life pools, and
C. Created a new deduction on the
purchase of motor vehicles.
Instant Asset Write-Off Threshold Increased Previously assets costing $1,000 or less (excluding GST) could be claimed in full the year they were purchased. Assets costing more than $1,000 were required to be depreciated over the estimated life of the asset. From 1 July 2012 assets that cost $6,500 or less (excluding GST) can be claimed in full in the year of purchase. For example if your small business entity purchased a sheep feeder for $3,000 excluding GST on 5th September 2012 your tax deduction will be $3,000 in the 2012/13 year. Assets that cost more than $6,500 (GST exclusive), for example a tractor, will be added to a general asset pool for tax purposes. In the year the asset is purchased the depreciation claim will be 15% regardless of the date of purchase. Small business general & long-life pools combined
Small Business Entity (SBE)
Previously assets that were expected to be held long term were separated into a long-life small business pool with a much lower depreciation rate of 2.5% in the first year and 5% for subsequent years. From 1 July 2012 the general and long-life pools will be combined into one general pool. Therefore all assets that cost more than $6,500 (excluding GST) will be in the same pool.
A small business entity is an entity that is carrying on a business activity with an annual aggregated turnover of less than $2 million.
This will effectively increase the depreciation claim on assets that have a long effective life (for example Machinery sheds, Grain Sheds, Hay sheds and Fertiliser Sheds) to 15% in the first year and 30% from the second year of ownership onwards.
New deduction for SBEs purchasing motor vehicles If a small business entity purchases a motor vehicle for business use on or after 1 July 2012 the first $5,000 will be deductible in full and the balance will be added to the small business asset pool and depreciated at 15% for the first year and 30% for the following and future years. The amount of the deduction will be reduced where the vehicle is not used 100% for business use. Motor vehicles that qualify for this new deduction include new and second hand cars, trucks, vans, utilities and motorbikes. However,

Turnover includes your livestock sales, wheat and barley and other grain sales and other income earned by the business before any expenses. Where your turnover is less than $2 million you should be able to use the concessions that are available for small business entities. You may also need to include the turnover of any other businesses that you may be connected to or affiliated with.
