For Brume Oloko, teaching is more than a career, it is an opportunity to inspire, uplift, and help students become the best versions of themselves every day As Alief ISD’s Elementary Teacher of the Year, Oloko is recognized not only for her excellence in the classroom, but for the meaningful relationships and lasting impact she creates with students
A Nigerian immigrant raised in Houston, Oloko proudly describes herself as “ a product of Nigeria and Houston” “Nigeria gave life to me, and Houston raised me, ” she shared
Oloko attended schools in Fort Bend ISD and graduated from George Bush High School in 2009 During high school, she was actively involved in athletics as a member of the cross-country team and captain of the track team Through sports, she developed the discipline, perseverance, and work ethic that continue to guide him personally and professionally today
After graduation, Oloko attended Xavier University of Louisiana, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology Although she once envisioned a future in medicine, she soon realized her true passion was working directly with children and helping shape their futuresThat realization led her to education
Oloko began exploring teaching through opportunities such as the Summer Engineering Experience for Kids (SEEK) program and later as a substitute teacher in Alief ISD It did not take long for her to discover that the classroom was where she truly belonged “Being able to connect with students, support their growth, and play a role in their daily lives confirmed that teaching was not just something I could do, it was something I was meant to do,” she said
Dedicated to continuous growth as an educator, Oloko is currently pursuing a Master of Education in Learning Design and Technology at the University of Houston.
Inside the classroom at Cummings, Oloko strives to create an environment where every student feels seen, valued, and supported. Beyond academics, she invests deeply in students’ social and emotional growth by serving as an advisor for the National Elementary Honor Society, providing after-school tutoring, and volunteering at events such as the Girls Conference Her teaching philosophy centers on the belief that every child is capable of learning and achieving success, even if each student’s journey looks different
“I understand that every student is not the same, and it is my job to meet my students where they are and provide them with the necessary tools to help them grow, ” she shared “My motto is every student who walks into my classroom will leave as a better version of themselves each day”

For Mireya Lara, education is more than a profession; it is a lifelong calling rooted in service, creativity, and a deep belief in the potential of every child As principal of Rees Elementary Performing and Visual Arts Academy, Lara brings 30 years of educational experience, a passion for student success, and a strong connection to the Alief community she proudly calls home
A graduate of Alief Elsik High School, Lara’s journey in education began humbly as a paraprofessional before growing into a distinguished career spanning classrooms, counseling offices, and campus leadership positions. She earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Houston and later completed graduate studies through Grand Canyon University
Throughout her career, Lara has taught students from Pre-K through fifth grade, giving her a unique understanding of childhood development across every elementary level She also served as a technology specialist, school counselor, and dyslexia teacher, experiences that strengthened her commitment to supporting students academically, socially, and emotionally.
Before becoming principal of Rees Elementary PVAA, Lara served as assistant principal at Liestman Elementary, Youngblood Intermediate, and Smith Elementary in Alief ISD Her leadership style is grounded in collaboration, innovation, and maintaining high expectations while fostering an environment where students and staff feel supported and inspired.
“After 30 years in education, I believe our greatest responsibility is to educate the whole child: academically, creatively, and emotionally,” Lara shared. “When strong instruction is paired with the arts, students find their voice, build confidence, and develop the empathy and resilience they need to succeed in school and in life ”
That philosophy is reflected throughout the halls of Rees Elementary PVAA, where creativity and academics work hand in hand to empower students and unlock their potential Under Lara’s leadership, the campus continues to cultivate an environment where students are encouraged to explore, express themselves, and grow into confident learners and leaders.

For nearly two decades, one educator has dedicated their career to shaping students, supporting campuses, and leading with heart across Alief ISD. With 19 years of service to the district, Alief ISD’s Secondary Principal of the Year exemplifies the passion, leadership, and commitment that define excellence in education.
Currently serving as the coordinating principal at Taylor High School since 2013, this dedicated leader has impacted students and staff across multiple campuses and grade levels throughout the district Prior to Taylor, she served four years as principal at Elsik Ninth Grade Center and two years as associate principal at Elsik High School Her educational leadership journey also includes experience as an elementary principal and secondary assistant principal.
Before stepping into administration, she began her career in the classroom teaching high school English Language Arts; a role that continues to influence her philosophy on education today
“I have always loved reading, and I believe that students who are readers become leaders,” she said. “Reading is not content that is taught. Rather, reading is a life skill that is practiced.”

Students at Alief ISD campuses are gaining hands-on business experience through innovative studentoperated school stores that are making a lasting impact on their campuses and communities Most recently, Alief Taylor High School celebrated the opening of its campus store, joining Alief Hastings High School and Alief Kerr High School in creating opportunities for students to develop leadership, communication, customer service, and entrepreneurship skills
Located inside each campus, the stores are operated by students with the support and guidance of teachers and campus staff The student-led businesses provide real-world learning experiences while also creating a positive school culture and generating funds that support campus programs and student activities
“At Alief Taylor High School, students are taking the lead in managing daily operations, assisting customers, organizing inventory, promoting merchandise, and learning the fundamentals of running a successful business”, says Alief Taylor HS principal Mary Williams. “The store serves as more than just a place to purchase school items and spirit gear it has become a learning laboratory where students can apply classroom lessons to real-life experiences“ The initiative reflects Alief ISD’s commitment to preparing students for success beyond graduation by offering hands-on learning opportunities that connect education with real-world experiences
“Our school stores provide students with authentic business experience that extends far beyond the classroom From managing inventory and analyzing sales to serving customers and promoting products, students are developing the professional and leadership skills that will benefit them in any career path , " shared Erica Santillan, CTE Program Manager, during the grand opening celebration
Alief Hastings High School and Alief Kerr High School have also seen success with their student-run stores Through the support of students, staff, and the school community, the campus stores have generated funds that are reinvested into student programs and activities At Hastings High School, the student-operated store has raised almost $150,000 during 2025-2026 to support campus initiatives and student opportunities Meanwhile, Kerr High School’s campus store has reached $120,000, further demonstrating the positive impact of student entrepreneurship across the district
Teachers play an essential role in mentoring students and helping them manage the stores’ daily operations From marketing and accounting to customer engagement and inventory management, students gain valuable career and technical education experiences that help prepare them for future careers
The stores also strengthen school spirit by offering students and staff a convenient place to purchase campus merchandise, snacks, and school-related items while supporting programs that directly benefit students “At Alief ISD, we are committed to creating meaningful learning experiences that prepare students for success beyond graduation,” said Erica Santillan “Programs like our student-operated stores allow students to apply their knowledge in real-world settings while developing the confidence, leadership, and problem-solving skills needed for future careers”

A NEW WAY TO EXPERIENCE HIGH SCHOOL IN ALIEF
High school is starting to look a little different and a lot more flexible, opening the door to an exciting new choice for families and students alike With the launch of Alief360 Virtual School, powered by Alief Taylor High School, students can experience learning in a way that is more flexible, more personal, and more connected than ever before.
Opening in the 2026–2027 school year with its first class of ninth graders, Alief360 is built on a simple idea: every student’s path is unique, and learning should be designed with that in mind Students from Houston and surrounding areas, as well as the Golden Triangle, will have access to this innovative program.
Students will experience a balance of self-paced learning and live instruction, allowing them to manage their time while staying connected to teachers and classmates Each student is also supported by an advisory coach who helps guide them every step of the way
For Dr Alicia Kerr, director of Alief360 and SOAR, the program is a chance to build something truly meaningful for students.
“I am very excited about the opportunity to open a new program and put things in place that will make this experience meaningful and enjoyable,” she said. “There is so much untapped potential for virtual schools, and I cannot wait to explore that”
Even in a virtual setting, connection remains a top priority Through its partnership with Taylor High School, Alief360 students can participate in activities, organizations, and select in-person experiences. “We want our students to feel like they belong to both their virtual school and a campus community,” Dr. Kerr shared.
That sense of belonging matters deeply to students Shameka Gilbert, counseling coordinator of academics, emphasized that choosing a virtual setting does not mean giving up social interaction “The choice to learn online does not mean that I don’t want to interact with other people,” she said “I really want to be able to participate in clubs and organizations because socializing is very important.”
She also highlighted the program’s personalized approach from a student perspective “They will not just give me a computer and tell me to work we will have small groups so that I can connect with other students,” she explained Smaller learning settings help students feel more comfortable, ask questions, and build relationships Debbie Vincent, coordinator of virtual school support, says that balance is what sets Alief360 apart. “This is not just online learning it is a full school experience delivered in a different way, ” she said. “Students don’t have to choose between learning online and being part of a school they can have both”
With built-in supports, regular check-ins, and strong communication with families, Alief360 is designed to help students succeed and feel confident in their learning It’s a forward-looking approach that expands access while keeping students connected every step of the way.

The inaugural Alief ISD Education Foundation Pickleball Tournament brought together students, staff, alumni, community members, and supporters for a day filled with competition, connection, and community spirit Hosted at Alief Independent School District’s Hastings High School South Gym, the event marked a new chapter for the Alief ISD Education Foundation as it continues creating innovative ways to support students and teachers across the district
“The tournament welcomed participants ages 10 and older and featured doubles and mixed doubles competition, giving players of all skill levels the opportunity to participate in one of the nation’s fastest-growing sports”, shared board member and co-chair of the Fundraiser committee, Michael Bennett Sr “Community members packed the courts and sidelines, creating an energetic atmosphere centered around fun, wellness, and philanthropy” Bennett added
The event also featured several special guests with strong ties to the Alief community, including former NFL players and Super Bowl Champions Cliff Avril, Martellus Bennett, and Michael Bennett, along with globally recognized artist Tobe Nwigwe Their participation added excitement to the tournament while highlighting the importance of alumni and community leaders giving back to the district that helped shape them
Proceeds from the tournament will support programs and opportunities that benefit Alief ISD students and teachers The foundation continues to play a vital role in providing scholarships, classroom grants, and additional resources that enhance educational experiences throughout the district
“More than just a fundraiser, the inaugural tournament showcased the inclusive spirit that defines the Alief community”, says President of the foundation, Raquel Olivier “Families, educators, students, volunteers, and business partners came together with a shared purpose supporting education while building stronger community connections through friendly competition”, Olivier added
Following the success of the first tournament, organizers expressed excitement about making the pickleball event an annual tradition for the Alief community The overwhelming support from participants and sponsors demonstrated the community’s ongoing commitment to investing in the success of Alief ISD students

The Superintendent’s MVP Award Recognition Program was created by Dr Anthony Mays upon his hiring in 2023 as part of his desire to improve the district’s climate and culture.
Each month, the Alief ISD community nominates one secondary student, two professionals and two support staff members, who exemplify high standards, have a customer service mindset, and are working to improve the climate and culture in their respective areas

ALIEF ISD CELEBRATES COMMUNITY AND CAMPUS EXCELLENCE AT THIRD ANNUAL MVP BRUNCH

Alief ISD celebrated the power of partnership, service, and student success during its third annual MVP Brunch held May 5 at the Marshall Career and Technical Education Center The event, spearheaded by Superintendent Dr Anthony Mays, was created to recognize the district’s monthly MVP honorees while also celebrating a community member whose dedication and support continue to positively impact Alief ISD students and families.
During the event, Dr Mays delivered a comprehensive district overview highlighting Alief ISD’s continued growth in innovative programming, College, Career and Military Readiness (CCMR), and future-focused educational opportunities designed to prepare students for success
“Our students are excelling because of the support of our staff and community members, like you in this room, ” Mays said “Our district has innovative programs, pathways, and many other educational opportunities designed for every student, and we want you to help us spread the word to your clients”
Board President Dr Darlene Breaux also addressed attendees and thanked the community for its ongoing support of the district“Your presence here today is a testament to the strength and spirit of the Alief community,” she said.
One of the highlights of the morning was the presentation of the Superintendent’s Community Contributor Award, an honor recognizing individuals who have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to Alief ISD and its students Commissioner and educational advocate Lesley Briones was the inaugural recipient in 2024, followed by former Alief ISD Board Trustee and Houston Councilwoman Tiffany Thomas in 2025
This year’s honoree was Barrell Richardson, a 1995 Hastings High School graduate, longtime Alief ISD business partner, volunteer, and advocate As the founder and executive director of Teen Inc, Richardson has spent more than two decades working with high-risk and system-involved youth, providing mentorship, resources, and opportunities for young people across the community
Although Richardson appeared surprised by the recognition, the standing ovation and applause from guests made it clear his impact was widely known and deeply appreciated “Barrell has been a major supporter of the district since I began three years ago, ” Mays said “There is not a time when we have called you that you have not picked up the phone to help Alief ISD”
Overcome with emotion, Richardson offered a heartfelt response“I’m only doing what God has put on my heart to do,” he said. “I love Alief and I love this district, and I will always support you. ” The annual MVP Brunch continues to serve as a celebration of the educators, staff members, and community leaders whose dedication helps make Alief ISD a thriving and innovative district for all students

Through the Teacher Incentive Allotment (TIA), Alief ISD proudly celebrates the powerful connection between exceptional teaching and student success This initiative allows us to recognize and reward outstanding educators who are driving meaningful academic growth and preparing students to thrive beyond the classroom
Teachers can earn one of three TIA designations: Recognized, Exemplary, and Master Designations are awarded by the Texas Education Agency based on a combination of rigorous teacher evaluations and demonstrated student growth In Alief ISD, these distinctions are more than honors; they represent the measurable impact our teachers make every day Designated teachers generate state funding that is returned to them as performance-based compensation, with awards ranging from $3,000 to $32,000 depending on their designation level and campus Each designation remains active for 5 years, allowing educators to receive annual compensation while continuing to serve in the classroom as teachers
Alief’s TIA journey began in the 2022–2023 school year, marking our first official data capture year Momentum quickly followed After submitting our initial data for state approval, we received exciting confirmation in February 2024 that our system met TEA standards This milestone resulted in our first cohort of 73 designated educators across all grade levels and campuses: 51 Recognized, 20 Exemplary, and 2 Master teachers
These educators generated $135 million in allotments, representing 8% of all TIA-eligible teachers in Alief ISD At the same time, the district engaged in intentional refinement of its system incorporating stakeholder feedback and strengthening calibration practices to better capture the true scope of student growth happening in our classrooms
Those efforts led to a transformative leap in 2025–2026 Alief ISD proudly celebrated 489 newly designated teachers in a single year, bringing our total to 665 TIA recipients an impressive 34% of our district’s certified teaching staff This includes 255 Recognized, 313 Exemplary, and 97 Master teachers
Together, these educators generated $83 million in allotments, with an average payout of $11,254 per designated teacher
In total, Alief ISD has generated more than $10 million in TIA allotments since the program’s launch More importantly, these milestones reflect a deeper story: a district-wide commitment to instructional excellence, continuous improvement, and student achievement As we continue to refine our system and invest in our teachers, we look forward to expanding opportunities for recognition and celebrating even greater levels of student success in the years ahead

There are moments in a school district that remind us that education is more than lessons taught in a classroom; it is about people, purpose, and the lasting impact of service This year’s Alief ISD Service & Retirement Banquet was one of those unforgettable moments
With a dazzling Las Vegas-inspired theme, Alief ISD rolled out the red carpet to honor the extraordinary educators, administrators, and staff members who have devoted years, and in some cases decades, to serving students, families, and the community The evening was filled with laughter, heartfelt reflections, applause, and gratitude as colleagues and loved ones gathered to celebrate those who have helped shape the heart of Alief ISD.
From the moment guests entered the beautifully decorated venue, the atmosphere radiated appreciation and celebration The theme reminded everyone that Alief ISD truly “hit the jackpot” with employees whose dedication, compassion, and commitment have transformed lives across the district.
Throughout the evening, honorees were recognized for milestone years of service, representing countless early mornings, late nights, and devotion to students Their contributions extend far beyond job titles They are mentors, role models, encouragers, innovators, and champions for children
“For retirees, the banquet marked the closing of a meaningful chapter and the celebration of an enduring legacy,” shared Dr Tangela Hughes-Beston, Associate Superintendent of HR & Professional Learning Many spent decades walking the halls of Alief schools, building relationships, inspiring generations of students, and creating memories that will forever remain part of the district’s story “While retirement signals the beginning of a new journey, their influence will continue to live on in every student they encouraged, every colleague they supported, and every life they touched,” added Dr Hughes-Beston
The evening also served as a reminder of what makes Alief ISD so special: its people. Parade and Taste of Alief Brings Community Together in Celebration of Culture and Unity

The streets of Alief came alive on April 25 as community members gathered for the annual Parade and Taste of Alief, a vibrant celebration showcasing the diversity, culture, and spirit that make the Alief community unique
Families, students, staff, local organizations, businesses, and community leaders lined the parade route to enjoy colorful floats, marching groups, performances, music, and cultural displays representing the many backgrounds that call Alief home The event highlighted the community's strong sense of pride and unity while creating lasting memories for attendees of all ages
Following the parade, the celebration continued with the Taste of Alief, where attendees could sample a variety of international cuisines and cultural traditions from around the world Vendors and community partners offered delicious food, entertainment, and interactive activities that reflected the rich multiculturalism of the Alief area
The Taste of Alief Festival is an opportunity to celebrate what makes us Alief, our blend of nationalities, our unity, our commitment to our community It is a day where families, students, staff, and our community partners all collide together”, says Shanceler Terry, Director of Family and Community Engagement Department

The event also provided an opportunity for local organizations, schools, and businesses to connect with residents while celebrating the importance of community engagement and collaboration Volunteers and organizers worked throughout the day to ensure the event’s success, creating a welcoming, family-friendly atmosphere for everyone in attendance
Students from across the district proudly participated in the festivities, representing their campuses through performances, clubs, organizations, and spirit groups Their involvement demonstrated the energy, talent, and diversity that continue to define Alief Independent School District and the surrounding community
Superintendent Dr Anthony Mays shared his appreciation for the community’s support and participation in the event “Alief International Parade and Taste of Alief is a reflection of the pride, diversity, and unity that make our community so special,” said Dr Mays

Alief Education Foundation Awards More Than $25,000 in Teacher Grants to Support Innovation Across Alief ISD

The Alief ISD Education Foundation continues to make a meaningful impact in classrooms across the Alief Independent School District by investing in creativity, innovation, and student success. This year, the foundation awarded more than $25,000 in Innovative Teacher Grants and Mini Grants to educators across the district, supporting creative ideas and enriching students' learning experiences
Over the past several weeks, the Alief ISD Education Foundation Board members including Board President Raquel Olivier, Vice President Kodi Bailey, Secretary and Grants Committee Chair Clarence Anderson, and Liaison Li Wen Su joined district leadership in visiting campuses across Alief ISD to surprise grant recipients and celebrate their innovative work
The grants support a variety of educational initiatives, including hands-on learning experiences, classroom technology enhancements, creative instructional approaches, and student-centered programs designed to increase engagement and achievement
“These grants are about empowering teachers to bring their ideas to life and create unforgettable learning experiences for students,” said board secretary and chair of the grants committee, Clarence Anderson “Our educators work tirelessly every day, and the foundation is proud to support innovative programs that inspire creativity, collaboration, and academic growth in the classroom”, added Anderson
The campus visits became special moments of celebration as teachers were recognized by their colleagues and students for their dedication and commitment to excellence in education The surprise presentations highlighted the strong partnership between the foundation and the district in supporting innovative teaching practices
Board vice president Kodi Bailey emphasized the importance of investing in educators and fostering innovation throughout the district
“When we invest in our teachers, we invest directly in our students and the future of our community,” Bailey said
“Seeing the excitement and passion from teachers during these surprise visits reminds us why the work of the foundation is so important These grants help turn great ideas into impactful opportunities for students across Alief ISD”

CHOICE PROGRAMS OPPORTUNITIES
A campus-based Choice Program in Alief ISD offers students engaging, interest-driven learning experiences at select campuses. Enrollment is application-based, and students must meet program eligibility requirements. Transportation may be available for select programs.
