This updated building regulations approved document expands upon existing changing room requirements by challenging the standardisation of user needs. it acknowledges gaps within existing building regulations, when user groups are not accurately represented during the design process and are therefore not designed appropriately. It recognises the damage to individuals when the built environment does not cater to specific needs and aims to eradicate such processes of 'othering' by clearly defining non-standard objectives that should be met.
This feminist approved document implements feminist design principles to ensure that spaces are inclusive to all. It readdresses the design process to consider the perspectives of users in line with the Equality Act 2010 and challenges recent policy changes around unisex toilet provision.
