City Council Corner HELLO RESIDENTS,

How are you holding up? I know it’s been an intense year with challenges and hurdles being thrown at us every day. I want to assure each and every one of you that all of us at City Hall are fighting harder than ever to not only keep the city moving, but thriving! Projects have continued throughout the city and we have been busy supporting construction and new development these past several months. There is a lot of money on the sidelines right now. We have plenty of projects that were previously funded and approved and we are doing everything we can to back them. Just recently, we celebrated the completion of the Clark County 215 Beltway build-out. It now commences an approximately 51-mile loop around the greater Las Vegas area and the last five miles happened in North Las Vegas. This innovative and recognized transportation project has provided much needed flexibility to one of the fastest-growing metropolitan areas in the United States. The next big project is the Northern Beltway Interchange connecting the I-15 to the newly completed CC-215 Beltway. This project consists of designing new ramps, flyovers and street connections to complete a system-to-system interchange where the northern I-15 meets the CC-215 Las Vegas Beltway. It will also reconfigure and improve traffic flow to local streets around the interchange and provide the much needed access to Tropical Parkway. This is one of NDOT’s featured projects that will provide not only access, but striking new freeway aesthetics, roadside sculptures and decorative rock. This project has started construction and will take approximately three years to complete. The Crown Jewel of the VA Hospital is in North Las Vegas and has been surrounded by an oasis of desert for many years and it’s now finding new neighbors popping up next to this royal champion. There are several new residential communities being built by revered home builders such as; Pulte, Taylor Morrison (formerly William Lyons) and Touchstone, with Villages of Tule Springs bringing new products from Pardee homes, Lennar, KB and DR HORTON. More rooftops means more options and

opportunities for all the residents in the area to see this mirage of dessert turn into new development. One of the most exciting projects the city has been working on since the Tule Springs Lands Bill passed by Congress in November 2014 is the Job Creation Zone that will be part of this new royal parade of offerings along the CC-215. This mini city or medical campus envisioned in this area will bring innovative research, medical services, specialty care, micro or full hospital services, office, retail, walking trails, and hotel services to the area. This uncovered jewel known as the Job Creation Zone is still being polished, and within the next couple of years, there will be another stone in the crown for North Las Vegas and its residents. Among other exciting medical care and services coming to the city are Centennial Hills Hospital ER Facility, Grand Desert Behavioral, Culinary Health (Medical Office Building) and SDMI on Craig Road. As you can see, despite the minor setback this pandemic is causing, great things are still happening in North Las Vegas! In the meantime, as life continues to return to normal, I hope you can all continue doing your part to stay safe and keep healthy. That means continue wearing face coverings while out in public and practice social distancing. With flu season around the corner, it’s more important than ever to continue taking preventative measures to prevent getting sick. Getting flu vaccinations, eating healthful foods, exercising and reducing your stress are great ways to prioritize your well-being. Also, please continue to check-in with one another. As stressful as this year has been, it’s the people in our lives – our friends, family and neighbors – who have kept our spirits going. You may have been following all the discussions on whether the 2020 General Election would have been conducted with an all-mail ballot process or in-person. I am happy to say, that we will be offering both. All registered voters will receive a mail ballot, you will have the opportunity in Clark County to vote by submitting your completed and signed ballot by mail, or in person if that is how you prefer to exercise your right. When early voting starts in October, please go to www.clarkcountynv.com to find numerous locations throughout the valley. You can also call the Clark County Election Department at 702-455-VOTE. • Aliante residents need to continue to be aware of scams and fraudulent schemes relating to COVID-19. Criminals will stop at nothing to fleece unsuspecting residents, especially senior citizens. Before giving money to any charity, please check to make sure it is legitimate. Do some online research, ask for recommendations and by all means, do not ever wire money or pay in cash or gift card. Once you know a charity or service is legitimate, it is the best practice to use a credit card so you can dispute the charge if necessary. So many good charities and non-profits are out there and need your support, but always be aware of those trying to use this pandemic for their own gain. • I know the great toilet paper shortage that started the COVID pandemic caused other materials to be used and flushed into our sewer system. However, flushing anything other than toilet paper puts a tremendous strain on our sewer and water reclamation services. Please, do not use “flushable” wipes, baby wipes or any other materials, as they do not break down when flushed. They can cause you hundreds and thousands of dollars in repair costs as well as place a heavy burden on this essential service to the entire valley. Don’t be a Pain in the Drain and remember to think twice before you flush.
