Walking Mountains Annual Report 2022

Page 1

OUR MISSION

To awaken a sense of wonder and inspire environmental stewardship and sustainability through natural science education.

WELCOME

Dear Friends,

We are pleased to bring you the Annual Report for our fiscal year 2022, beginning July 1, 2021 and concluding June 30, 2022. This was a special year at Walking Mountains as we celebrated the 10th anniversary of our Tang Campus in Avon. This campus provides offices for our 45+ full time staff, indoor and outdoor classroom space, educator housing, trails for visitors and our community, and conserved natural spaces for local wildlife.

This past year, during our 10th anniversary, we also were fortunate to reach more people than ever before. For the first time in our history our annual reach surpassed 300,000. No small feat, considering in our first year we reached 900 people. We also welcomed more visitors, from pre-k through gray, to the Avon Tang Campus and more Eagle County schoolchildren for free on-campus Field Science programs than ever before.

Of course, the Tang Campus is only one of several locations where residents and visitors

OUR ANNUAL IMPACT

reached through youth and community programs reached through sustainability programs total lives reached over the course of FY 2022

can engage with our mission. We operate the Vail Nature Center on Gore Creek, the Nature Discover Center atop Vail Mountain, in schools across Eagle County and throughout the backcountry of the White River National Forest.

As our visitors and local students grow into the stewards we hope them to be, their

education and experience with Walking Mountains grows with them. Our mission has never been more important than it is today and our impact is felt within the confines of our Valley and beyond.

This past year we were thrilled to have broken ground on the George Family Education Center at the Precourt Family Sweetwater Campus in western Eagle County. These 224 acres near the Colorado River and Sweetwater Lake offer different geological and ecological learning opportunities and perhaps most importantly, enhanced access to natural science education for our down-valley community.

Our sustainability programs have also continued to thrive. We conducted a record number of Zero Waste events throughout the Valley and continue to lead local efforts to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions through the Climate Action Collaborative.

The incredible impacts of our important work are made possible by the generosity of our donors. Contributions from individuals, businesses, foundations, and governments comprise over 70% of our operating revenue. As we continue to expand and enhance our programs your consistent and generous support is inspiring and we are deeply grateful for you, and all you do to help us fulfil our important mission.

As you read this, we are preparing for our 25th anniversary in 2023. We hope you plan to join us for one of our many nature programs, engage in our sustainability initiatives, and reflect with us on our shared responsibility to nurture our environment and our own health and well being.
