Steel mills
Alfa Acciai
Steel production starts in the scrap yard, where baskets are packed to feed the melting furnaces, according to specific recipes in terms of scrap mix and weight. A shredder, with a production capacity of 250,000 t/y, is in place for the production of proler.
The production process involves scrap melting in the two electric arc furnaces (EAFs) with a yearly overall production capacity of about 2,000,000 tonnes, followed by the tapping of liquid steel. The molten steel is then refined in a bath and the metallurgical parameters are fine-tuned in the relevant ladle furnaces. The billet casting process is handled by two 5-strand continuous casting machines.
The steel mill turns out two main end products:
→ billets with a square section of 130x130 mm (or 160x160 mm) in the length range of 6-12 m, intended for in-house rolling process and trading;
→ Alfa Sinstone® and Gripstone®artificial aggregates, two by-products obtained from the recovery of black steel mill slag, produced at a plant with a capacity of nearly 200,000 tonnes a year, for use in civil engineering works and road construction.
Acciaierie di Sicilia
Somewhat similarly to what has been said for the Brescia production site, steelmaking starts from the scrap yard, where a shredder of a yearly capacity of about 150,000 tonnes for the production of proler is also installed. The production process includes the melting of scrap in the EAF, with a yearly capacity of 500,000 tonnes, the tapping of liquid steel with the related secondary ladle metallurgical processing, followed by final casting in the 4-line continuous casting machine.
Production includes:
→ billets with a square section of 130x130 mm in the length range of 6-12 m, intended for in-house rolling process and trading;
→ Sicilystone artificial aggregate, featuring the same characteristics of the Alfa Acciai’s granulates obtained from a plant with a yearly production capacity of nearly 60,000 tonnes, is the ideal solution for bituminous and cement conglomerates, as well as for use in civil engineering works and road construction.

Hot rolling
Alfa Acciai
The facility is equipped with three independent hot rolling mills, with an overall production capacity up to 2 mt/y

Acciaierie di Sicilia
This site is equipped with a rolling plant with a production capacity of around 500,000 t/y fed by a hot charge system that significantly reduces CO2 emissions.
This system turns out:

→ Renforcing steel in coil (spooled coils).

Downstream processing
Alfa Derivati
Alfa Derivati runs two different production facilities in Brescia, where Alfa Acciai hot-rolled ribbed coils are processed to obtain:
→ Welded wire mesh for reinforced concrete, which is produced at the San Polo site in Brescia, using cold-stretching/rolling lines to give the mesh wire the required mechanical characteristics as well as welding machines, with a production capacity of about 300,000 t/y;
→ Recoiled wire: i.e. hot-rolled and cold stretched rebar packaged in coils. It is produced using drawing machines, with a total production capacity of about 150,000 t/y
Out of the two production sites, the one in Montirone (Brescia) focuses on exports and boasts a railway link to make logistics increasingly sustainable.

Alfa Acciai and Acciaierie di Sicilia produce reinforcing steel in bar, in coil and welded wire mesh in accordance with the following country-specific standards, compliance therewith is certified by the following bodies:

Environmental responsibility and Zero Waste philosophy
Our commitment to the environment is ongoing and unbending. It reflects who we are and where we’re ahead. It is spanned over seventy years of history and has become an integral part of the industrial DNA of the Alfa Acciai Group, which is traditionally based on the model of circular economy.
For some time, the Group has been committed to making steel production increasingly sustainable, through an integrated approach that involves all environmental aspects, full compliance with current legislation and the ongoing search for the best technical, management and organisational solutions to make consumption more efficient.
ZERO WASTE philosophy is a cornerstone for the Group, which, by creating real forms of industrial symbiosis, makes it possible to systematically apply the principle of circular economy, with the aim of reusing, recovering and enhancing every material resulting from the various processing stages, thereby safeguarding precious natural resources.
Circularity of steel
Steel is the most recyclable and recycled material in the world as it retains its characteristics over time, without any loss of quality or degradation of its mechanical properties, which is why it is hence crucial for the development of a circular economy.
In its Brescia- and Catania-based steel mills, the Alfa Acciai Group annually recovers over 2 million tonnes of scrap iron. The finished product is certified as containing more than 99% recycled material, providing the market with truly green products that can benefit from LEED and BREEAM credits.
Such a high sustainability index is the result of innovation and ongoing investment, supported by business ethics and a culture that aims at the harmonious coexistence of business, environment and community.
Artificial aggregates
ALFA SINSTONE®, GRIPSTONE® and SICILYSTONE are the result of the Zero Waste strategy, in that these three by-products are obtained from the recovery of black steel mill slag at Alfa Acciai and Acciaierie di Sicilia, consisting mainly of iron, calcium and silicon oxides, which is generated during the melting process of scrap iron in the electric furnace.
These high-performance artificial aggregates are the result of ongoing research into new materials and new technologies for improving end products and safeguarding natural resources. They can be used in building construction (concretes and mortars), road surfacing (bitumen) and in civil engineering works as a replacement for materials of natural origin (quarry aggregates).
Energy transition
Steel mills that produce steel by melting scrap in an electric arc furnace (EAF) are particularly energy-intensive. The main aim is to implement energy transition processes towards more efficient, low-impact models. The companies in the Alfa Acciai Group have set themselves ambitious targets in this regard and have developed a number of measures for efficiency, ongoing improvement and reduction of the use of carbon materials from fossil sources.
More specifically, Alfa Acciai has set up together with A2A, Italy’s largest multi-utility company, Alfa Heat Recovery, an innovative and efficient system to recover thermal energy from the steel mill, which is transferred to the Brescia district heating network. System certifications
Environmental and Energetic Management System
As a proof of the ongoing environmental performance improvement policy, Alfa Acciai and Acciaierie di Sicilia have implemented the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System since 2005, which was also implemented and certified by Tecnofil in 2018, a means of ensuring to all stakeholders that the utmost respect for the environment is pursued and achieved. Certification makes it possible to identify the sustainability issues of the production process, assess its impacts and monitor the effects on environmental matrices, and seek the best techniques for taking action and intervention.
Since 2023 Alfa Acciai and Acciaierie di Sicilia have been certified ISO 50001, the Energy Management System which aims to facilitate the process of identifying, recording and evaluating energy results and is the best tool for managing and implementing corporate Energy Policy.
Alfa Acciai’s strategic priority is the ongoing improvement of performance, including energy through the implementation of energy efficiency measures in production processes and related ancillary services so as to reduce the impact on the environment.
Corporate Carbon Footprint (CCF)
In 2023, the Alfa Acciai Group obtained the CCF certification for all its production facilities and is now among one of the first Italian companies obtaining it.
This is a method for measuring and reporting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions caused directly and indirectly by an organisation. It is expressed in tonnes of CO2 equivalent.
This certification represents the Group’s renewed endeavour and constant striving for improvement and focus on achieving ever higher levels of sustainability and decarbonisation on the one hand and, the starting point to define an intervention plan with the objective of mitigating its GHG emissions through specific measures and investments on the other.
SUSTSTEEL
Alfa Acciai and Acciaierie di Sicilia are among the first companies to be awarded the SustSteel (sustainable steel) certification, which was established at European level by Eurofer with a view to promoting its members’ legitimate interests in the construction steel industry as part of corporate sustainability and social responsibility.
Product certifications
Recycled material content
The minimum content of recycled material at Alfa Acciai and Acciaierie di Sicilia products is 99%. This figure is among the highest in Europe and far exceeds the Minimum Environmental Criteria for instrumental applications set by the CAM-EDILIZIA and the CAM-INFRASTRUTTURE STRADALI, which are Italy’s most important environmental Standards in the construction industry.
EPD
All products (bars, coil, mesh, wire rod, Alfa Sinstone® and Gripstone®) as to Alfa Acciai, and bars and spooled coils as to Acciaierie di Sicilia bear the Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) required to meet LEED and BREEAM standards. In this way, the Group communicates, in a clear and transparent manner, to the market the environmental impacts of the company’s products, from the origin of raw materials to their End of Life, thereby contributing to increase the rating value of the end product.
ICMQ ECO GOLD
Alfa Acciai and Acciaierie di Sicilia bars and coils are also certified to ICMQ ECO Gold, a sustainability label that measures product performance based on three thematic areas: environmental protection, resource conservation and energy saving.
Environmental communication
Sustainability Report
The Sustainability Report, that the Alfa Acciai Group first published in 2021, is the main reporting tool used by companies to communicate, with transparency and according to internationally recognised methods, the objectives, performance and strategies adopted in relation to ESG issues.
In addition to governance and social issues, this report details the Group’s environmental performance, including materials consumption, waste management, energy efficiency, and emissions management and monitoring.
Siderurgica Investimenti Holding has released its first Sustainability Report 2024, thus extending the reporting scope to all Group companies: a milestone towards alignment with the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) guidelines.

Acciaierie Laminatoi Fonderie Affini
S.r.l. is founded in Brescia, from which the name “ALFA” originates. The company focuses on steel production and rolling, through ongoing technological upgrading.
1986
The Downstream Production Unit comes into being for the production of welded wire mesh and drawn wire.
1984
Mitigation of the environmental impact of the plant, through both the installation of state-of-the-art EAF off-gas dedusting systems and soundproofing of the main production processes.
1998
Alfa Acciai takes over Acciaierie di Sicilia (Catania), the only steel mill in the heart of the Mediterranean, specialized in the production of rebar and spooled coils.
1991
Alfa Acciai takes over Ferroberica (Vicenza), strengthening its cold processes, including pre-shaping and assembly of reinforcing steel. The company becomes a European leader in the sector.
2004
Inauguration in Brescia of the third rolling mill to add spooled coils into the Alfa Acciai product range.
2000
In agreement with the Brescia Town Council, Alfa Acciai develops the “Alfa 2000” plan to further mitigate the environmental impact of the plant.
2008
Alfa Acciai begins production of Alfa Sinstone®, an aggregate obtained from the recovery of steel mill slag for use in civil engineering works and road construction.
2016
Alfa Acciai takes over the industrial site of Montirone (Brescia) and Tecnofil, one of the major drawing mills with galvanizing plant in Europe.
2020
As a result of a research and development project, an innovative system is defined for the recovery of waste heat from the steel mill. Between 2023 and 2024, Alfa Heat Recovery is implemented, supplying heat to the Brescia district heating network run by A2A.
2018
The Montirone site is about to host a new Alfa Derivati department for the production of recoiled wire and a new Ferroberica plant for pre-shaping and assembling, alongside the ones in Vicenza, Catania and Sedegliano (UD).
